Gansey telling Adam not to break Ronan’s heart because Adam has broken Gansey’s heart so many times without even realising it, I’m going feral. 

Adam breaking Gansey’s heart because he is so self involved and preoccupied about himself and his station and his troubles that he’s always thought that Gansey is this king, Gansey only being able to be fully acknowledged at first by Blue, who had to peel back layers and layers and fall in love with just Gansey, but Ronan and Adam always see him as the king. 

So many rambling thoughts about the ending of this series I am losing my mind

omg thank you!!! i wrote that AU YEARS ago, like it feels like a different lifetime, but luckily @pudgyscales and i talked a lot about it so although I don't have any plans to continue it, I do have some random headcanons and stuff i can give you!

(under the cut bc this ended up longer than i expected)

Adam is studying environmental engineering, Gansey is studying history and archiving (probably a double major bc of course), Blue is studying marine bio, Ronan is studying agriculture, Henry is in marketing, and Noah is a part-time student who lives off-campus and studies music therapy

Noah WAS Gansey's roommate the year before but then he dropped to part-time and moved off campus and Ronan (in limbo due to an irrelevant but perhaps unsurprising roommate conflict) got thrown in with Gansey. they are still best friends and more than slightly homoerotic even though Ronan doesn't appear much in the fic and they are both actively dating other people lmao

this Blue is not interested in dating cis men (she and Henry are both genderqueer) but she and Gansey have a running joke that if they were both straight they would probably end up getting married. as it is Gansey takes her to Gansey Parent Functions that he's strongly encouraged to bring a Heterosexual Date to and Blue weirds out every republican in Virginia

Blue and Ronan and Noah are quietly graffiting the underside of every overpass in town with SQUASH ONE SQUASH TWO

Gansey is more nervous about telling Ronan about Adam than he is telling his parents about Adam bc he expects his parents to be weird about it (they are) but he NEEDS Ronan to like the guy he's seeing. he tries to slowly introduce the concept of Adam but he ends up just working Adam into every conversation by accident because he's never NOT thinking about him. Ronan humors him but also deeply makes fun of him.

Ronan and Adam Do Not get along at first. Adam thinks Ronan is too abrasive and Ronan thinks Adam is too standoffish. but one day Adam comes across Ronan building skateboarding ramps in the parking lot of Noah's building one day and when Ronan's like "what the fuck are you looking at?" Adam tells him that he'll actually gather more speed if he builds them at a different angle. Gansey is beside himself. he wanted them to become friends but NOT LIKE THIS

Gansey is an emotional eater and tries to eat his insomnia away with varying degrees of success. Adam has very weird feelings about his insomnia for the first few months they're dating because Gansey always spins it as the like, he's taking extra classes and doing an internship and like, playing it off as the academic romanticization of pulling all-nighters to finish readings or assignments because that's easier to say than that he's too anxious to sleep. it's fine! it's good! he's getting so much done! he just can't sleep until he gets this last bit down, he has so many idea for what he wants to do! and Adam is almost relieved when Gansey's facade finally cracks and he admits to Adam that it's not that he doesn't want to sleep, it's that he can't. Adam has some complicated feelings about Gansey's habit of trying to eat his feelings or eat himself to sleep but he's good at getting Gansey to slooooowly open up and actually talk about those feelings.

they're both very busy but they run on different schedules. Adam is up before the crack of dawn and in bed early and Gansey is busy all day and then up all night because he can't sleep. Gansey refers to his activities and stuff as happening at "civilized times" once without thinking and Adam doesn't speak to him for the rest of the afternoon.

and we'll end on a fun one: Adam with an unexpected night off the same evening that Gansey has some schmoozy networking event with an open bar and lots of fancy little appetizers. it's about archiving or books or something so he's happy and he comes by Adam's room afterward all pleasantly drunk and floppy, drunk food in hand, pizza or chicken wings or something he picked up on the way home. this is like dinner 2.5 for him and he flops into Adam's bed and tells him all about the event while he works through his pizza and/or chicken and Adam pets his hair and finishes some reading for class. ordinarily Adam would be opposed to food in bed but Gansey is so cute like this that he'll allow it.

Ronan being senselessly turned on by Adam on a motorcycle in Call Down The Hawk, eliminated for not technically being a car but still impressive

Jordan stealing Declan’s car and in doing so feeling closer to Hennessy while also closer to Declan.

Adam teaching Gansey about fixing cars.

The picture in Adam’s glove rendezvous has a the man (who looks like Greenmantle, which is to say like a combination of Ronan and Gansey, which is to say he looks like Declan but I digress) standing next to a German made car.

I could have sworn in addition to the Gansey comparing Adam to the Pig scene there was a scene where Ronan did as well but I looked up every time the word “Camaro” is mentioned in the Dream Thieves + The Raven King (only books with Ronan pov chapters) and did not find this so I wonder if I made it up, or saw someone else misremember and then adopted it in my memory. Someone enlighten me if not. There are certainly others but I either couldn’t remember them or couldn’t find text evidence to confirm they were real. Of course, you might say that some of these were likely more intentional from a doylist pov than others, however the text is the text and motifs are motifs. I am simply an academic presenting my findings to you all.

Also the Latin line is said twice once when the Camaro breaks down Ronan says it jokingly to Gansey in the scene where he also puts a leg over Adam’s, then Adam remembers it after a breakdown in TDT as applying to how he’s a “trainwreck” right before finding himself in Ronan’s dream. Feel the others are self explanatory enough but thought this one merited explanation if you haven’t reread recently.

I keep searching through fics on AO3 by word count and half the time it’s just Kinktober fics and that is not what I want I want something that’s comparable fiction to novels that are considered literary works of art!1!1!1! In other words, I’m picky. If you are too this may just be the list for you. Enjoy 😛😛

1. Concorde, Anonymous, AO3 (must be a member to read), 176k words

What if Adam was removed from the Parrish household at age 10? And what if he became the ward of a certain dreamer?

This fic had me in a CHOKEHOLD genuinely killed me and revived me. If you enjoy novels that are time jumpy and show rather than tell than this fic is for you. It’s confusing in the fun literary type of way and it is so well crafted and well articulated. I am a huge huge fan.

2. Magnetic by MonsieurBlueSky, AO3 (must be a member to read), 231k words

“an AU in which Ronan never befriended Gansey and after the death of Niall Lynch, Gansey isn't there to pull Ronan back from the edge. Kavinsky is there instead, ready to push him over.”

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING NO NOTES GENUINELY PHENOMENALLY EXECUTED I adore this fic and everything about it. The way the author is able to examine ronans relationships and how magic impacted them is just so so so lovely. I read this in one sitting and I sobbed for hours after finishing. Please read the tags, there is graphic depictions of suicide, self harm, substance abuse, domestic violence, etc. it’s all very canon typical but elaborated on.

3. Violent Delights (Violent Ends) by sunmoontruth, AO3, 200k words

Oh. My. God. Holy. Fucking. Shit. HUNGER GAMES AU. Genuinely such captivating writing, the story pulls bits and pieces from the original Hunger Games, but there is so much that is original and fresh that this fic becomes less of an AU and more of a stand alone work. And with everything going on in the world now, in America where I live, this more graphic adult version of the hunger games truly hits where it hurts. Phenomenal characterization, such an amazing adaptation. I am floored beyond belief.

4. (The Time It Takes) To Believe in Fate by LydiaStJames, AO3, 100k words

“When he was 16, Adam walked into a forest in Henrietta, Virginia and exited in 1800s Ireland. The day he spent with the grumpy but attractive farmer lingered with Adam for years, but the forest didn't seem like it would appear again. That is, until Adam returned to Henrietta for his father's funeral and the forest calls him back once more.

GOD SO GOOD SO WELL WRITTEN. I have re read this one too many times to count. It is beautiful. It’s also such an intriguing concept and such a unique and original AU that it feels so disconnected from the original canon in a way that makes it much more enticing. Like the characterization is spot on and it’s so cool to see how these characters react to such an odd set of circumstances relative to their original canon.

5. Seek Ye The Living by charactershoes, AO3 (must be a member to read), 40k words

6. Divinity by Cazio on AO3, 67k words

Magic can’t heal everything, especially when Ronan lacks the knowledge to dream a fix all. In other words, during his first semester at Harvard Adam gets sick. In true Adam fashion, he completely ignores it. But eventually it becomes too much for him to evade.

This fic is emotionally devastating. But, for some weird reason, it’s a comfort fic for me as someone who is chronically ill. It is a different type of illness and a much different type of circumstance but to see Ronans characterization when faced with something so devastating, and to see Adam get taken care of with such love. It means a lot when that is something I’m so deeply afraid I’ll never find. Please please please be aware of the tags and archive warnings.

For now these are my favorite long fics that are pynch centric but also just beautiful examples of literature that is so well written it feels like a disservice to label it fan fiction. I’ll update more as I read more!!
