$10 Million For Canadian Vaccine Research Hubs

The Government of Canada today confirmed its' main priority continues to be protecting the health and safety of Canadians. Throughout the recent pandemic, decisive actions taken empowered Canada to scale up domestic biomanufacturing capacity, which had been in decline for over 40 years.

On March 14, 2023, Adam van Koeverden, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and to the Minister of Sport, highlighted in a press release an investment of $2 million to create the Canadian Hub for Health Intelligence & Innovation in Infectious Diseases (HI3).

This support is part of a $10 million investment announced on March 2, 2023, for creating five research hubs as part of Stage 1 of the integrated Canada Biomedical Research Fund and Biosciences Research Infrastructure Fund competition.

The University of Toronto (UofT) leads the Canadian Hub for Health Intelligence & Innovation in Infectious Diseases.

Decorated Olympic kayaker Adam van Koeverden says he hopes to run as a Liberal candidate in the next federal election.

The four-time Olympic medallist said he'll be seeking the party's nomination to run in Ontario.

"After representing Canada for 20 years on the international stage as an athlete, today I'm announcing my intention to seek the federal Liberal nomination in Milton, Ontario," van Koeverden said on social media Monday.

The seat is currently held by Conservative deputy leader and former cabinet minister Lisa Raitt.

After winning the riding in 2011 by a 30 per cent margin, Raitt faced a tougher challenge in 2015, narrowly beating Liberal candidate Azim Rizvee by five per cent.

Meet Adam van Koeverden! Adam is an ambassador for Right to Play and the David Suzuki Foundation; as a sprint kayaker he won four medals for Canada at the Olympic Games! Adam is sharing Frederick by Leo Lionni, a book that brings him back to the mid ‘80s where his mom would be reading it to him.

So what’s the book about? “It’s about a special mouse that isn’t like his other mouse friends. It’s a Rudolph the rednosed reindeer type story about diversity.”

What does he hope the next reader gets from this book? “A desire to read and write, and a feeling that diversity isn’t only okay… it’s important!”

Why is reading important?

“For me, it’s brain exercise. Our brains are wonderful organs, that are capable of so much… but like all organs, they only work properly if you take good care of them.”
