"Mrs. Kitchen had invited Enid and Alwyn to dinner. They had all feasted on the goose and stuffed themselves on the dark, rich plum pudding that Mrs. Kitchen had been preparing for weeks. Now the tables and chairs had been pushed to the wall to make a bit of room, and they were all gathered together close to the Christmas tree. Mrs. Kitchen had fixed tiny candles on the branches, which were also hung with gingerbread men and sugar candy sticks. At the of the tree was a satisfying pile of boxes and parcels that Alwyn was assessing with great concentration."
--From Let Loose The Dogs, by Maureen Jennings (2003).
I read this book last December, and if it finds Acting Detective William Murdoch in the midst of a very trying month, losing his sister Susanna to cancer, and reuniting with his estranged father only to find he has been convicted of murder; it ends on a cheerful note as Harry awaits a new trial once his (still distant; there's a lot of complicated history between them) son unmasked the true culprit.
And it's with relief he can celebrate Christmas with Arthur and Beatrice Kitchen, and his sweetheart Enid Jones and her son Alwyn, and Havoc, his dad's dog! It is a very good book and I warmly recommend it!
And I also wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

My Favorite Villains Part 2 - James Gillies
Murdoch Mysteries, a Canadian murder mystery drama, is an episodic TV show set in Victorian Toronto. But like most shows that take on this nature, the series occasionally has overarching themes and recurring characters. James Gillies is one of them.
Gillies, portrayed by Michael Seater, first appeared in the season 2 episode Big Murder on Campus. Gillies is a polite, intelligent, and helpful young student who, along with his friend Robert Perry, assists detective William Murdoch in finding the killer of their physics professor Dr. Bennett.
As you might have guessed, this personality hides something sinister. A psychotic killer devoid of empathy, who uses his intelligence to kill. Not to gain anything or exact revenge. Just simply to kill.
But I don't think his politeness is deliberately placed as a mask, because he never drops it. Not after Murdoch finds he was behind Dr. Bennett's murder, not when he's being interrogated years after the fact, not when he's killing. All throughout the series, he remains the same. Never losing his cool, always well spoken. It's as much a part of his personality as is the urge to kill.
His intelligence is put on display throughout his numerous appearances. His ability to escape imprisonment and think of every detail to cover his tracks is impressive. Right from his first scheme, the murder of Dr. Bennett, this is evident. The perfect crime that no one could point to him. That is, except for someone of equal, or possibly even higher, intelligence.
This person is William Murdoch. Even if only one single crumb is left, Murdoch will not miss it, and he'll find the trail. He put the pieces together and saw past the facade of his helper. Had it been any other detective, Gillies likely would have gotten away with the crime. But either it was just luck, or he met a true opponent.
Gillies became obsessed with Murdoch. Every escape he made from jail, and every following crime, was done to get to Murdoch. He wanted to test him, to cause him pain. Over the years his schemes always put the power of life and death in Murdoch's hands. Whether it be to solve a mystery Gillies had orchestrated in order save another from being killed, or to murder one to save someone the detective loved.
Murdoch always outsmarted Gillies, though the battles were never easy. The two truly are very closely matched in their wits, from strategy to inventing.
Gillies is a very interesting character, one of my favorites from the series and one of my favorite villains overall. His dialogue and nature are entertaining to watch, and in some ways he acts as a foil to Murdoch in terms of intelligence. And though he finally met his end in season 10, I feel he went on his own terms as his pain from prior injuries brought him to his final stand.
Still, his ghost lingers in Toronto.

Home Again Soon by TheLastSaskDragonRider Summary: Watts is kidnapped. (takes place between season 13/14, no season 14 spoilers)
It's Not Time by GoodMorningMoon Summary: Spoilers from 16x11, "D.O.A." (the black and white film noir episode). Missing scenes as Murdoch recovers from a nasty poison.
we're going down (six underground) by fluffier432 Summary: It had been a number of days already (George had lost count just how many), and he was no closer to escaping the clutch of his kidnapper. Maybe slightly, if his healing foot counted, but that wouldn’t be much use if he couldn’t unlock the front door to run away. Even if he could pick the lock, there would be no time before Amelia caught up to him, and that would only be if he could get past her in the first place. She had him seated at the desk, not tied down as she believed his foot still could not bear his weight (and it nearly couldn’t), as she lay on the bed between him and the bedroom door. Nobody had come to rescue him yet, which felt out of character for the quick-acting Murdoch. He supposed perhaps they hadn’t even discovered he was missing at all; he was on a book tour, after all, it’s not like his absence at work would be considered unusual. Whumptober 2022 Day 5: Blood Loss/Running Out Of Air/Hypothermia
S-O-S by Horatio13 Summary: He was pinned in a pretty tight pocket, but not tight enough that it was impossible to breathe. Uncomfortably difficult, yes, but definitely possible. His ears were ringing. Something sharp was stabbing in his thigh. He couldn’t feel his fingers on his right hand, but he couldn’t see enough of them to figure out what the problem was. He could feel something wet and sticky starting to pool underneath his legs and stomach. Well, thought George numbly. This is fun.
Whumping the Bugalugs Series by Horatio13 Summary: Slaps the top of George's helmet This bad boy can fit SO much pain!
The Lady and the Arrow by GoodMorningMoon Summary: A crossbow bolt to the gut is quite a blow no matter how fit you are. Murdoch recovers from the events of 1x11, "Bad Medicine."
Steady On by GoodMorningMoon Summary: After the ambush at the church, only a select few know George Crabtree is still alive. Cross-posted to ff.net.
Out of the Woods by GoodMorningMoon Summary: Filling a gap in S8E11, "All That Glitters." How did George get a wounded Murdoch home from Haileybury?
The Lady and the Arrow by GoodMorningMoon Summary: A crossbow bolt to the gut is quite a blow no matter how fit you are. Murdoch recovers from the events of 1x11, "Bad Medicine."
Mr. Crabtree's Insistence by GoodMorningMoon Summary: Missing scene from (and spoilers for) 15x22, "Sweet Amelia." Effie seeks help for George after a deeply traumatic experience.

“Sometimes I get so tired; I don’t even know myself.”
Day No: 26
Prompt: Working to exhaustion
Fandom: Murdoch Mysteries
Medium: fic
Trigger Warnings: none
SFW
Watts hadn’t had a day off in a month. His days had been twelve to sixteen hours long, covering for his ‘fellow’ constables and the detectives that he ran the errands off. He was one of the earliest people in and one of the last ones to leave. If he was allowed. There were times where he was ‘volunteered’ for the night shift alongside some of the ones that hated him the most.
After his kidnapping by James Gillies, and rescue after they got William out, his Inspector was not pleased by the weeks where he wasn’t there. He didn’t fire him, no, Inspector Brackenreid informed him when he came to rip him a hole. Apparently, he played it as Gillies getting information out of him whenever he came across something that needed a police officer’s knowledge. He was being punished for leaving them short handed.
He had to be there earlier than everyone else to get things ready. The desk sergeant had to approve of his work. The detectives used him for the most part to get witness statements, paperwork from the coroners and the city, running around with no access to cabs or a bike. He didn’t really get to have a lunch, barely managing to get something off of carts. Trying to get tea was a trial, if they didn’t catch him trying to make it and then take all of it. Water was better, if they had their keg filled. With the silent approval from their Inspector, they had been running him to the grave. He mentally debated on quitting and finding James again so he could have a life of sorts. Even if working with the man was about as dangerous as it always was.
Now, he was heading for the city coroner to get paperwork for a murder victim. It had been several hours since starting the day and he had yet to have something more than the single porridge bowl served at his boardinghouse. There had been two sneaked cups of teas, but he could feel that not being enough either.
Going through the doors, he had to stop at two different doors to stop the slight swirling of his eyesight. Closing them for a minute, he waited until there was enough strength to get through the morgue and not react to what was likely to be a victim on the slab before getting what he needed to get and run off.
His mind registered that Doctor Grace was with someone. Two someones. One deeper than the other two. A man, at least. While the swirling had stopped, there had been a fog floating through his ears and filling the back of his eyes. His mind told him that the other two were familiar, safe, but it wouldn’t actually give him the names of the people. That fog was doing its best to destroy his reasoning and sense.
Walking in, the white blurred at the edges and he almost paused before forcing himself forward. “Constable Watts,” a delighted voice called out.
*Oh, Julia.* His head jerked up too quickly at hearing his name called out that his sight spun around when he tried to focus. Stumbling, he grabbed a railing to keep himself from falling while he closed his eyes. “Llewellyn,” the deeper voice said, concerned at his state. He heard steps before someone gently got a hold of him.
“Wllum,” he mumbled, recognizing the other voice. The way he sounded and acted, unconsciously seeking his warmth, concerning the others although he couldn’t see it. Julia was quickly going through what she could see with the other woman. It took a deal to get himself to stop drifting. Three breaths in and out before he had more energy to talk clearly. “I’ll be fine. Just need a minute.
“Looks as if you need more like an hour,” Julia commented, “William, there’s the chairs in the office. Let’s get him seated.” Between three people that weren’t willing to let him go without acknowledging what they saw, he was sat in the little visitor’s chair. Forcing his eyes to open, he was treated to the older woman getting a doctor’s bag out that must have been tucked in a corner, considering the dust.
Gently moving his head, Doctor Grace and William were out in the main room, quietly discussing something. “Uh, oh,” he mouthed. Doctor Grace wasn’t in the ‘know’ about his former ward status. If he was right, it was just been explained to her. It may go well, it may not.
“All right, Constable Watts,” she said, getting his attention again. The fog was still sloshing in his head, but the swirling and blurring was tempered now that he was out of the bright area. “Three very important questions. One, did you sleep last night?”
He nodded, closing his eyes when it didn’t go well. “Managed four hours.”
“Only four? You need more than that,” she pointed out.
“I, wasn’t let off until about one, and I woke up just before six,” he said, carefully filtering through his memories to ensure they were correct. “Had to get up for the porridge.”
She noted that for the third question. Although, she had a good idea on what the answer was. William walked in with Emily standing just behind him. “Two, how much sleep are you getting each night?”
“Four to five hours for the past month. That’s with luck. I’ve had a couple of nights where I only managed two, one, none,” he slipped, the fog blocking his filter that was warning him to stop talking, “The other constable they set on me sometimes catches me, sometimes doesn’t.”
The past month. There was something she was connecting, but she wasn’t sure on exactly why. Station House One hadn’t been involved with her husband’s death, and her almost hanging thanks to Gillies’s manipulation and setup. Llewellyn shouldn’t have been involved with the trial and almost hanging. In fact, she found out later he wasn’t involved at all on either side. He hadn’t been helping William, but he hadn’t been in the crowd that wanted her death.
William noted it as well. “Last question, Llewellyn, is that porridge the only food you had today?” she asked.
She noticed that he started to wobble after nodding his head at the last question. “I am not permitted breaks on most days,” he admitted, “My disappearance before William’s rescue is unacceptable for Station House One and they are punishing me for it.”
“It’s almost six,” Emily whispered, slightly horrified.
William frowned. Twelve hours without food. He heard from the other constables that Llewellyn was being run ragged over at One. His disappearance during the trial and reappearance after being rescued pointed to something that should be obvious.
The way he was getting treated over there, it almost made him want to break one of the promises they had agreed on before Llewellyn became a constable. Only interfere when necessary. When his life was in danger and it would be hard to keep from anyone.
“Doctor’s orders,” Julia said, “You’re going to get something decent to eat before sleeping for at least nine hours.”
“I,” Llewellyn attempted to say. His head was swirling with the fog and now a low thump of pain that usually happened when he hadn’t enough to drink had joined in.
“I can take the report that you were coming for,” Doctor Grace jumped in, looking over to him. “I am done for the day here.”
“Excellent, and we can get him a decent meal before getting him home for sleep,” Julia led.
His second attempt at trying to argue came out as a low groan. Someone pushed a tin mug into his hand and he immediately brought it up to take water filled to the brim. Simple sips turned into draining the mug. “Nothing to drink as well,” William noted.
He held up a finger to protest. “Two cups of tea.”
“When?” There was a pause as he tried to remember when he had those teas. That settled the older man’s case. “Another cup before we go.”

Just establishing my own timeline here
Murdoch had an alcoholic & (not physically) abusive father. (Who was still alive as of season 1.) (They had lost touch until partway thru season 1.)
Born in Nova Scotia. Grew up there & liked spruce beer.
Father was a fisherman.
Mom passed away when he was a little kid (I'd say 5-7 years old?)
Murdoch was taken away by nuns. Dad wanted to write but didn't know where.
Murdoch kids lived with their aunt.
fr keegan. William burned down his shed at 12 & rebuilt it in the month all by himself. Youth was a daydreamer.
Um when he was an altar server there was a shipwreck & then started taking notes for fr keegan. Also a birth in the room next door. tf dude. He know how to pray in some latin. Witnessed a woman dying & telling her confession?? Also there was a bunch of money in the hem of the coat. Taught him deduction.
Yo shik he’s solving his first murder investigation at 12 years old!
Keegan left nova scotia right after murdoch
He left home at 17 to go to a logging camp.
18yo murdoch’s friend (didn’t) kill someone on a night he was drunk. Later, he held someone down while his leg was being amputated (from getting it caught in a log jammer). Still has nightmares 30y later
(between 62 & 65 this guy was killed. It was 35 years ago. Present day is 1897-1900 as of season 4)
He also had a job as a ranch hand at some point.
He has a sister who joined a convent at 14 & joined cloistered nuns in Montreal.
He is roman catholic in a city of protestants.
He went to college at some point where he met Eddy Cullen & were they both planning on joining the seminary? -- “So u’r a detective now?” ‘beats logging. I tried to write you at the seminary after jesuit school.’ “nah I got married.” -- so they went to jesuit school together, will went logging, eddy went to the seminary, then they lost touch. right? -- “still do any boxing?” ‘no I see enough of that in my career (on the streets).’ “I thought fr obrien beat it out of you.” ‘did a week ever go by that we didn’t see the inside of his office?’ “no” -- so he was a boxer & he got in trouble often. -- “fancy a pint?” ‘i’m on duty, maybe another time /lie’ “body is still the lord’s temple eh will?” -- ‘I haven’t spoken to him in 20 years’
Or he learned from the Jesuits
He was a boxer at some point.
Lumber camp "up north" from Montreal, stayed two winters, & then a logger mentioned being a constable so Murdoch applied.
Joined police force 10 years before S1.
5 years as Constable, "acting detective" at station 4 for a bit (2y), full detective 3 years before show began.
Bachelor in s1, engaged to Liza but she passed 1y before show began. Gave her a silver horse. She gave him his watch on his bday.
S1: 2 years ago come March 12th Julia & William started working together
S1 "I only attend once or twice a week," & "confession as often as possible" but later:
"every Sunday?" 'yes!' *lie detector* '...kidney stones'
Hadn't seen his dad in long enough that dad barely recognized him.
s5e8 turn of the century soon (also faked anna fulford’s death)
S5 is 1899
murdoch weighs about 160lbs bmi abt 23
s7e12 1901 8 years ago 1893 they did a murder; year julia & william met; year she became the coroner; one of the first murders they worked together

Murdoch Mysteries headcanons except I am leaning on a shiny car and saying hi to Henry and George Kinnies:
-Llewellyn loves cats because when he lived with Ms Young he befriended a stray cat that lived outside the building
-Off duty George calls Llewellyn Lew
-William and Llewellyn go to the Brackenrieds once a month for dinner, sometimes George goes but he forgets a lot :(
-Freddie Pink and Louise are friends, I miss Freddie
-Violet has taken in Nomi as a little sister to protect her
-Henry is accidently learning Russian, I will not elaborate, unless you ask
-Henry is always cold, George is always warm
-Not even a headcanon because dn jokes didn't exist in 1907, but bobby makes deez nuts jokes and John falls for them
-William will only drink wine like once a year if Llewellyn buys the wine
-Bobby’s gay, he never got the “I’ll accept you no matter what” speech Brackenried gave to John, he thinks his dad will hate him :(((((
-Every detective in this show is touch starved, and Brackenried
-Henry (my beloved) acts lazy and stupid when George is around because he knows everyone likes him more
-Rupert knows Aldous, how? Idk man, I just think it’d be funny, he’s also probably on a watchlist
-William and Julia bought a gold band ring for James, (no reason at all /s)
-George hates lettuce, he does like salad though, he just uses spinach
-When Henry gets water he sometimes gets an extra cup and pretends it’s for Jackson :(((

If i desperately need to watch a show with a gay jewish detective but cant commit to 200+ eps do you have a list of recs for episodes of murdoch mysteries im weak for gays in period dramas
Just know getting into it that they don’t really focus on either of these things in the show (currently only one episode where he discovers he’s jewish and a brief mention in another ep + he’s confirmed gay three seasons after he’s introduced) BUT even minus being a gay and jewish icon Watts is still the best character and he’s been acting gay since he was introduced lol
It’s week by week mysteries though so honestly you can tune in whenever and you won’t be lost. Watts is introduced in season 10 and I’ve included and italicized all the episodes he’s in below. The show is great not just for Watts though so if you want to get more into it without watching all the episodes here are some from each season that hit more major plot points or are just super good in our opinion:
Season 1
1x01 Power
1x05 Till Death Do us Part (also gay)
1x08 Still Waters
1x13 The Annoying Red Planet
Season 2
2x05 The Green Muse
2x06 Shades of Grey
2x07 Big Murder on Campus
2x13 Anything You Can Do?
Season 3
3x01 The Murdoch Identity
3x03 Victor, Victorian
3x05 Me, Myself and Murdoch
3x06 This One Goes to Eleven (James Pendrick x Murdoch is my favourite non-canon ship on this show tbh)
3x07 Blood and Circuses
3x08 Future Imperfect
3x12 In the Altogether
3x13 The Tesla Effect
Season 4
4x03 Buffalo Shuffle
4x06 Dead End Street
4x13 Murdoch in Wonderland
Season 5
5x01 Murdoch of the Klondike
5x03 Who Killed the Electric Carriage?
5x07 Stroll on the Wild Side pt. 1
5x08 Stroll on the Wild Side pt. 2
5x09 Invention Convention
5x11 Murdoch in Toyland
5x13 Twentieth Century Murdoch
Season 6
6x01 Murdoch Air
6x04 A Study in Sherlock
6x13 Crime & Punishment
6x13 The Murdoch Trap
Season 7
7x03 The Filmed Adventures of William Murdoch (only watch this if you end up caring about pendrick as much as we do or like sillier episodes lol)
7x04 The Return of Sherlock
7x08 Republic of Murdoch
7x09 Midnight Train to Kingston (only if you like Gillies)
7x16 Kung Fu Crabtree
7x18 The Death of Dr. Ogden
Season 8
8x04 Holy Matrimony Murdoch
8x07 What Lies Buried
8x12 The Devil Wears Whalebone (Emily Grace x Lillian Moss, a canon wlw couple starts here -Lillian is in 8x08 and 8x10 but she doesn’t play a huge role. I’m not including all their eps cause their interactions are brief and skippable in most)
8x14 Toronto’s Girl Problem
Season 9
9x03 Double Life
9x05 24 Hours to Doomsday (again only if you like Pendrick)
9x07 Summer of ‘75
9x10 The Big Chill
Season 10
10x04 Concocting a Killer (Watts introduction episode!!!)
10x05 Jagged Little Pill
10x10 The Devil inside (it’s not good but you have to watch if you like Gillies)
10x11 A Murdog Mystery
10x012 The Missing
10x15 Hades Hath No Fury
10x18 Hell to Pay
Season 11

11x03 8 Footsteps
11x06 21 Murdoch Street
11x07 The Accident
11x09 The Talking Dead
11x10 F.L.A.S.H (Pendrick is back and he has a gay assistant. a win!)

It would be great if you wrote something were the reader (in this case a women) had connections to James when he was still at the school. As he starts his killings. And maybe the have a little flirt going or something ^_^
A/N: You're welcome!! :) I'm so glad you requested! I tried my best to make it as short as possible, I'm sorry!! I could only cover his first killing but I could do a part 2 if you want to! And for the flirt part... well I imagined what 'flirt' meant to James and I guess it looks like that haha.
Like every morning, the physics students of the University of Toronto entered the class and found their seat. And like every morning, James Gillies, a brilliant student (if not the most, actually) sat next to another brilliant student called Robert Perry.
Unexpectedly, the professor did not take place at his usual desk. Instead, you entered the room in your beautiful white and blue Victorian dress and took place at his desk after the professor introduced you:
'Gentlemen, we have a new student. Please welcome her kindly as she will attend every class and exam just like every one of you.'
It may seem as an odd introduction but you were, in fact, the very first woman taking a physics course in the University of Toronto. And these 'gentlemen' didn't seem to take you seriously as you could tell from their small grin. Nevertheless, you stepped up and spoke with your mildly low but charming voice. You were confident, as always, and that sure erased the grins of these men - except for James and Robert. Though James' grin seemed more of a curiosity look.
'Good morning, gentlemen' you said. 'My name is y/l/n and I am very honored to be the first woman in this class. I am looking forward to discovering more on our Universe as well as on our Earth for we merely have theories that have yet to be experienced' you smiled a bit. 'I'm looking forward to working with you all as well'. As you said this, your glance caught James' who seemed to have been whispering to Robert's ear.
When the class was over, you heard Robert speaking with James on their way out.
'She must have had incredible results to have gotten here' said James.
'Or an incredible charm' said Robert mockingly.
You immediately stopped them even though it seemed inappropriate considering you've been eavesdropping.
'I'm afraid I have to tell you something Mr...?' you asked as you looked right into Robert's eyes.
'Perry' he said, surprised and confused as you could tell from his frowning face.
'Mr Perry, you should never underestimate a woman's capability. Be it physically or mentally. Or you might have surprises... and I mean... bad ones.' you smiled arrogantly, which made James chuckle in amazement as Perry took him away after one last angry look at you.
You'd been in the class for two weeks now and merely ever talked again with the duo. You later found out they were both the Physics' professor assistant (James) and Chemistry professor assistant (Robert). You would have gladly taken Robert's place to show him what you were capable of but you loved Physics much more. And that showed in your work. Which is why you were offered, after your first week, James Gillies' place as the professor's assistant. You had never spoken to James after that which is why you were even more surprised when you saw him sitting in front of you tonight, in the library.
The library was quiet and empty.
'Congratulations' said smoothly James.
You looked up from your work to him.
'Thank you' you said coldly.
'I'm genuine' said James as he looked at you with a small smile. 'I was considering quitting anyway but I'm glad a woman took my place.'
'It's a pleasure to meet a man who knows women and men are equal' you said as you handed your hand for him to shake. Which he did, immediately.
'So tell me... what made you want to become a physicist?' asked James.
'I've always been interested in physics. And I like to believe everyone should study physics to understand the world around us and the one that is out of our sight. How about you?'
'Same reasons...' he said, surprised at your answer. 'Though I also like to apply theories through experiments' he said with a spark in his eye.
You continued to talk with him for a long time before you two were thrown out of the library for it had to close. He invited you to the pub, but you refused kindly as you didn't want to miss your lectures the next morning.
The thing is, James was incredibly confused about you. You were very smart, you had proven it, but you were also a bit mysterious. It was like you had had a tumultuous life before you entered the school, which was certainly the case as James would later discover.
A few months later, you woke up to a terrible news. A professor had been killed by an invisible person. You were wondering why someone would do that when you saw James and Robert talk with Station Four Detective William Murdoch. You overheard them asking to follow the investigation to see how physics could apply to real life and that is the moment when you realised something was off about these two. They had been talking very discretely in the library everytime you saw them there. You even once saw Robert get mad and storm off the library as James sighed. Maybe they knew something would happen to the professor...
A few days later, you found them, yet again, talking with Murdoch to know more about the case. Why would they be so interested if they didn't have anything to do with it? Maybe it was a bit far-fetched to assume that already but you had always had a very good intuition. On that night, you decided to talk with James. You followed him as he headed to an empty class to take back his books which he had forgotten. You silently closed the door behind you and you stood in the dark in front of him as he struggled to see who closed the door.
'You said you like applying theories didn't you?' you asked suspiciously.
'Yes I did' he said with a smile. And you knew this smile by heart by now. It was an illusion meant to make him look like he had everything under control.
'You know...' you started walking slowly around the class as your face was lit every now and then by the streets' lights. 'Science can be used for so many things. And I find it highly satisfying when something you wrote on paper comes to reality.'
You stood in front of him.
'I like your mind' you said smoothly. 'You are a chaotic yet so logic person. You'd do anything to achieve your goals and see your plan come to reality.'
His smile had disappeared by now and he was slightly frowning.
'First time?' you asked.
'I beg your pardon?' he asked.
You stood in the light, closer to him. He tried to analyse your face, that grin of yours he knew by heart. You startled him as you took out a paper. There was an illustration. A mechanical object holding a gun which was supposed to shoot once the sand was out of the bag.
'First time killing someone, ay?' you said with a smile.
'Excuse me...!' he started to act shocked.
'There's no point in denying it, James.' You called him by his name for the first time.
'I won't go to the police. After all... my life would get boring if I didn't see your brilliant criminal mind work.'
The room was silent for a moment.
'What do you want, y/n?' he asked, saying your name for the first time as well.
You laughed. It amused you. You liked these little games. You two had been playing the perfect student all along. But now that you knew his flaws, you could show a bit of yours as well.
'I may... or may not have a criminal past.' you said as you started walking around the room again.
'How come you're not arrested?' he asked, as his smile grew wider.
'The art of disguise, Mr Gillies! I love acting. And I have to say, I'm quite convincing. Otherwise, how could I have been a constable for a few months and erased all evidence incriminating me?'
James didn't know if he could trust you or not. But you sure were serious... and convincing.
'What did you do?' he asked, now all interested.
'Ah! That's a story for another day. Now, Mr Gillies, if you'd like some advice from... a friend, I'd recommend you get rid of this Mr Perry.'
You leaned closer to him.
'He will speak. He will betray you. I can tell from his eyes and from the fight you had last time.'
James' smile faded away.
You kept the paper incriminating him with you.
'Have a good night. And if anything happens to you, I'll kill Mr Perry myself.'
For some reason, that made James' heart beat even faster. But not out of fright. It was out of excitement and.. curiosity.
He couldn't help but stand in that empty dark class and wonder...
'Who is she?'

"Tonight, he had wanted the comfort of a fire, but it had died down and he wasn't about to build it up this close to bedtime. He knocked the ashes out of his pipe on the grate, gave the embers a quick rake with the poker, and picking up his candlestick, went over to the window. The street below was moonlit, quiet and peaceful as a painting in a Christmas card. Yesterday, there had been a light snowfall. Not heavy or with staying power but a warning of what was ahead, and some snow remained on the rooftops and in the clefts of the tree branches. This was going to be his second Christmas without Liza, and he felt such a pang of loneliness, he had to move to keep the pain at bay. Forget about sleep right now, he knew he'd just be tossing around for the next two or three hours. He walked over to the brass box by the fire. It was supposed to be used for firewood, but he kept his dancing shoes in it. They were fancy, two-toned black and white with an elasticized side piece and soft, flexible soles. He took them out, kicked off his slippers, and pushed his bare feet into the shoes. Whenever he put them on, he felt different. He fancied his back straightened, his steps got smoother, and his shyness disappeared."
--And I've picked up Let Loose The Dogs again! It is December, and now the weather fits the words, although there has only been a light dusting rather than a snowfall a couple of weeks ago. But Christmas nears, and I too have a pair of black and white shoes I might slip on today to dance (to 1920s rather than 1890s music; but still!) And since Maureen Jennings' paper Murdoch likes a pint and a pipe, I can feel a little kinship with him.

Older Sister- William Murdoch, George Crabtree
Request: Can you do a William Murdoch x reader who's George crabtree's older sister and he ask her out but George decides to be overly protective ?!
A/N: I had trouble with this one. I don’t like contrived plot lines and this request is based around that. Hence I changed some things to make it not so dreadful. This frankly took so long because I didn’t want to do it, distant over laziness I can assure you.
__________________________________________
The Constable forfeited his expected formalities when he saw the familiar yet foreign figure standing in the Detectives office. Without a knock on the wooden door frame or even a glance to his superior he went straight to addressing you.
“What are you doing here.”
“Hello to you too George.” You sat down facing the desk with your younger brother to your back to your younger sibling. That same person unaware of what exactly he walked into, likely surprised and in turn blinded by your presence. His reply. “You’ve had enough time for such pleasantries in the past two years.”
Murdoch cleared his throat loudly to silence the bickering. ‘Heel heel’, comparable to a pair of dogs barking at a presumed threat. Although the Detective would not admit to drawing similarities between a mutt, a woman and a his best man.
You looked back to William, able to read his expression and the writing on the wall. “I did come to see you George. A private matter regarding Aunt Azalea.”
“Is she-“
“She’s fine George, I’ll tell you in private.”
He proposed a secluded area outside the station, but before he walked out taking the lead you spoke out again. “Meet me there George, I don’t want to interrupt your business with William.”
He took notice of your use of the Detectives first name but remained powerless to interfere with your next action. Your business card sliding across his desk and securely into his hand; all the wile George’s pupils started to burn imaginary holes into the Detectives head. A predator trait he inherited in their youth after one of their aunts patrons mistook her for another one of the ‘Flower Girls of Flower Hill’ in a drunken stupider. George had grown wiser since then, what a young man could get away with over two decades ago could not be repeated in the present on ones own boss without repercussions.
A difference aside from age and date had been the invitation. Instead of a gin soaked sailor getting too curious with wandering hands on a girl barely twenty; it was rather that same girl asserting her contact details on a tea flavoured Detective after a pleasant conversation lasting nearly an hour. A action hardly calling for the muttering of threats or throwing of furniture at offending parties.
Only a cheeky wink wink was offered to William before turning to the door. His eyes lingering on your swaying hips as you walked out of sight, almost taunting or daring him to follow wherever you would lead him. The steaming Constable would quickly occupy his attention as a unequal replacement. Regardless of the undeniable awkwardness Murdoch decided to act as if he was not caught red handed with someone’s sister. He cleared his throat once again.
“George, what have you-”
Crabtree walked out before the punctuation could be finished. A brown file being the only item left behind as he perused his elder sibling with a heated step. A silences only interrupted by the ticking clock and bustling of the station outside the still open door. Slowly, almost as if he was expecting to get caught again, William reached for the card left by yourself. Flipping it to read revealed your name, profession and contact; an allowed privilege he would be sure not to abuse, or antagonize George in the process.

David’s Resolution - Day 9
Day 9 (January 9, 2019)
Dark City (1998)
“Hey, you happen to know the way to Shell Beach?”
A man wakes up in a bathtub in a dingy apartment. He has no memory of who he is, where is he, or how he got there. Soon after he wakes up, the phone rings and he picks up, receiving a message telling him to flee before a group of people start coming after him. The man, as he leaves, learns that he is apparently “John Murdoch”, and he may or may not be a serial killer targeting prostitutes. And in his search for answers, he’ll come across a variety of interesting characters - a woman who says she’s his wife, a detective who think he’s the killer, a doctor who may or may not be trustworthy - while also questioning the reality he lives in and what the truth is.
Yep. Another movie I don’t want to go into details on regarding the plot because of spoilers. And trust me, you don’t want to spoil this movie for yourself. Go in as blind as you can. ...With that said, time to gush about this movie because this is a big favorite movie. Easily a top 10 favorite.
You know what, let’s get this out of the way. Yes, Dark City has quite a few similarities to The Matrix, even though The Matrix came out a year later. Similar themes of identity, distorting reality and such are in both films, plus lots of people in leather. although how they present themselves are very different. While the Wachowskis explored philosophical and religious themes in their cyberpunk action movie, writer/director Alex Proyas was more into telling an interesting and compelling mystery within a unique world influenced by film noir and German expressionism. Don’t get me wrong, both films are great, but if you feel The Matrix is too pretentious for you, then you may like Dark City more.
You know what both films do have that can’t be disputed? Rad-as-fuck visual design. The titular city is very dark and almost a character in itself, creating a sense of isolation, paranoia and confusion that good expressionism always invokes. It feels familiar and at the same time alien, even more when you The design feels reminiscent of Batman: The Animated Series in that it goes for a “timeless” setting that mixes modern and old settings and ideas. Actually, in a way, it does kind of feel like a comic book, as the city owes not only to classic film like Fritz Lang’s M, but also to the depiction of Gotham City in Tim Burton’s Batman, and the way the story unfolds and how scenes are framed and shot looks like comic book panels come to life. The world of this movie and the ideas present in it are absolutely fascinating, such as the concept of how memories work in this city and how tuning works and the nature of the overseers of this world.
The cast of the movie is great. On the human side, Rufus Sewell is excellent as John Murdoch, the man desperate to understand who he really is and what the hell is going on. Kiefer Sutherland’s Dr. Schreber is a hobbling, Peter Lorre-esque character whose motives are cloudy and whose allegiance is questionable... is he on the level, or is there something more sinister about him? You’ll have to watch to find out. Jennifer Connelly’s performance as John’s wife and a singer is intriguing, though it’s irritating that the theatrical cut overdubbed her singing voice. (The director’s cut rectifies this by giving us her original voice, which is pretty good.) And William Hurt’s Frank Bumstead, the police inspector investigating the murders and by extension John, comes off like a world-weary veteran similar to Morgan Freeman in Seven, who himself slowly realizes that the ramblings that both John and a former detective are saying may have some merit...
Then you get to the “Strangers”, the mysterious trenchcoated people in white who seemingly run the city, literally reshaping it however they seem fit. They act like a race based around Riff Raff from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which is fitting since not only did Alex Proyas base the Strangers on Riff Raff, but Riff Raff himself - Richard O’Brien - plays the lead Stranger character, Mr. Hand, a sinister figure tasked with hunting down John however he can. Also, all of the Strangers going by “Mr. (whatever)”, combined with the way they speak, reminded me of the henchmen from Diamonds Are Forever (or, alternately, think those two lifeguards from Codename: Kids Next Door.)
Also, Bruce Spence is in it, who to me is in the category of “hey, it’s that guy!” actors. He’s been in plenty of films: he’s the Gyro Captain in Mad Max 2 (a.k.a. The Road Warrior to us Americans), a similar character in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, the Trainman in The Matrix Revolutions, one of the sharks in Finding Nemo, an alien in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith who helped Obi-Wan on Utapau, and the Mouth of Sauron in the extended edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. He’s a cool guy and I like seeing him in things, and I just wanted to point it out. He’s Mr. Wall in this film, by the way, the tall Stranger who ended up- wait, what was I on about again?
Oh yeah, Strangers. The Strangers are sinister motherfuckers who run the city, using a psychic power called “tuning” to play The Sims: The Real Game, literally reshaping the city and giving people different identities and memories as they see fit. Why? They have their reasons. And their leader, known as Mr. Book (Ian Richardson), organizes a mass tuning every 12 hours where they put all the humans to sleep so they can screw with the city however they will before waking everyone up. The full extent of how this goes is disturbing and creepy, and you will see for yourself how creepy it is. But in a way, it reminds me of one of my favorite anime, The Big O, in that both stories took place in cities seemingly isolated from the world, use heavy noir elements, feature a mixture of old and new in their designs, and which explore memories and loss of memory as central themes.
Actually, a thought I had on the movie was that one could read it as some metaphor or symbolism or whatever about making movies and having people play different roles in stories and etc., but #1, that could be me reading too deep into something and #2, I can’t go into further detail without spoilers.
I’ll mention that this movie had an interesting release. It barely broke even in the box office, and some critics liked it while others had more lukewarm reactions. But there was one person in particular who absolutely loved the movie, and it was none other than Roger Ebert. “Love” is a strong word, and it applies to his glowing review of the film, but it goes further than that: he called it the best film of 1998, he put it on his list of “Great Movies” in 2005, he would use the film in his teaching about movies, and he contributed audio commentary for both versions of the film on its DVD release. This doesn’t really have anything to do with the review, but I find it interesting to mention. And it’s why I mentioned Roger Ebert in the “Next time” message for this review that makes sense only to the guy who writes this. (Boy, two bits of rambling...)
This movie does have a director’s cut, and while the theatrical cut is still a great film, the director’s cut is even better. What’s most interesting is that it not only changes scenes from the theatrical cut and adds some more scenes to make the film feel even more fleshed out, it also makes minor changes that apply to the entire film. The theatrical cut has largely blue and grey coloring that gives the film a colder and more detached feeling, while the director’s cut uses more yellows and greens, which I feel gives it a more disorienting and sickening feeling, like there’s something just underneath that doesn’t sit well and could represent how John sees the world. The effects used for John’s tuning are also tweaked: the theatrical cut’s effects looked a lot like when Mr. Freeze fired his freeze gun in Batman & Robin, while the director’s cut uses more subtle effects. Point goes to the director’s cut there. But really, you should watch both versions. I watched the theatrical cut first, even with that opening monologue (which I feel isn’t really a big spoiler since you learn what it mentions pretty early in the movie, plus, does it really spoil anything that major?) and it’s still good.
You know how people say they instantly love a movie the first time they see it? That’s this movie for me. I highly recommend it. If you like The Big O, film noir, expressionism, mystery thrillers, or just want something like The Matrix without perceived intellectual posturing, then here you go. Everyone go see this movie, it’s great.
Next time: Four people, one camera, and a lot of neuroses.

We Wait
At first, he had no recollection of what happened. Blurs, really, and nothing more than that. Murdoch groaned and shook his head before realizing how much it hurt. It felt as though all the blood had rushed to his head and so full that, if shaken too hard, it would leak from his ears. So the detective stopped shaking his head. “Ah.” Murdoch grimaced and moved an arm to scratch his nose-
Except he couldn’t move it. No, his left arm was hanging downwards by his side, limp. Murdoch inhaled and willed his shoulder muscles to move- and they did, but something was hurting. Hurting! A pain that he had not felt before, but recognized.
A bullet?
I’ve been shot.
When he rotated his shoulder again, he could feel the individual ball bearings embedded in his shoulder and back. Maybe, though, his other one was good. First, he twitched his fingers, exhaling a breath of relief when he realized that he still had that limb, digits and all. Despite it being numb from the lack of circulation, he had it and that was a good first step.
Next were his feet. The room was cold and the chain holding him up, heel-over-head towards the ceiling, was even coulder. He could feel it through the fabric of his trousers. The circulation was cut off there as well, and the chains were old and points were digging in. Murdoch inhaled and looked around. Next, he would have to survey his surroundings and figure out where he was. This did not help much, because the room was absolutely dark.
Murdoch inhaled through his nose. If he was near the ocean, he would smell it-
But instead was greeted with the metallic scent of stale blood. Perhaps he was in an old butchery or meat packing plant of sorts. Or a doctor’s office. How far off the floor was he? He reached his good arm down, fingers on his right hand almost brushing the stone cold ground. Murdoch could feel the coldness against his fingertips, and sighed, relieved he was so close to the floor. His nose- it still itched.
With a groan and a shocking amount of effort, Murdoch moved his hand up to scratch it, but paused as he heard a grating sound. Almost like sandpaper rubbing on stone. It was coming from inside his head. In a moment of panic, Murdoch touched his hand to his head and patted his hair. Something was not right. Something was broken. A jaw, or a tooth? Maybe it was his imagination. The man wrinkled his nose as he always did to think, but then realized the noise was emitting from his nose. The smell wasn’t from someone else, but it was from his own broken nose.
… Well.
This was not a good situation. He didn’t have smell (much). He couldn’t see. But what did he have?
He had one arm. Just an arm. At least it’s my left arm that’s injured, my nondominate one.
His thoughts we interrupted by a sudden shortness of his own breath, and William Murdoch found himself gasping for air. How long had he been hanging upside down? He wouldn’t be able to hang in for much longer-
Ha! Hang in. Murdoch felt his busted lips crack the smallest, the faintest, of grins. If the situation wasn’t so dire, he would have dared to chuckle.
His ears, once buzzing from the silence and popping from blood pressure, tuned in to the softest of groans. Not from himself and not from the chain, but from five feet in front of his face. Murdoch licked his lips and, somewhat warily, pierced the silence with his own dry voice. “Hello? I’m Detective William Murdoch-”
“Murdoch,” The other detective managed to cough out the single word.
“Detective Watts?” Murdoch sputtered much like a dying automobile; if from shock or the pressure of hanging upside down for so long, he didn’t know. “Why- what are you-”
“I fear the question is ‘what are we’. As in, ‘what are we doing here’.”
After a moment of consideration, the older detective nodded, reaching out with his right arm, fingers splayed out. “Detective Watts, can you touch my arm?” A moment after asking this he felt a hand touch his. “Good. How are you faring?”
“Well enough for someone hanging upside down.”
“Do you know what happened?”
“The last thing I rem… remember.” Watts’s voice paused. Maybe he was recalling the cause of their current position, but it also occured to Murdoch that Watts could be experiencing the pressures of hanging upside down.
“Save your breath, Detec-” Murdoch’s breath hitched with effort to push out words. “We need to get-” Hitch. “Down.”
Watts probably nodded, and Murdoch heard the creaking of chains and Watts exhaling softly. “I’m holding on to the chain. How are you doing?”
“I only have one good arm at the moment.” Murdoch explained, eyes squeezing shut. Oh God, it hurts. This all hurts. Why does everything hurt so bad? I have to get down. I have to get down now. Now. Murdoch heard chains creaking, and a soft tap of feet landing on the ground. The smallest of noises echoed in his head and worsened its ache.
Watts spoke, breaking Murdoch’s focus on his pain. “Alright, I’m down.”
“Good,” William coughed, feeling the blood crushing in on every bone, every nerve, every muscle, in his skull. “Can you get me down?” His voice was strained. The pressure was uncontrollable and too painful to let him hide the wavering in his voice.
A tap-stumble-tap emitted from where Murdoch assumed Watts was walking.“Yes, yes.” One of Watts’ hands reached up to steady Murdoch, accidentally grabbing the left arm. When William let out a cry in pain, Watts let go in shock. “Sorry.”
“No, no, just- just get me down. I’m chained by my feet.” Murdoch winced as Watts pushed his back upwards, just for a moment of reprieve. He grabbed onto a link of the chain as Watts stood on his toes to loosen the chains. One leg came free, and the second one was easier to loosen than the first. Watts lowered him, Murdoch’s good hand gripping onto the ceiling chain until his shoes tapped the ground. Murdoch felt his stomach turn from upside down, onto its side, then settle back into the place it belonged. The rest of his organs followed, and dizziness overtook him as he sunk onto the ground, a little closer to feeling normal. Murdoch swayed, as did his world, and leaned forward, coughing up whatever food remained in his stomach.
He heaved for a moment, trying to fill his lungs with air, reaching for his shoulder to hold it in place. “Detective Watts, what happened?” Murdoch’s voice cracked as he sat back on his knees, listening as the other man walked around the room, possibly measuring along the walls. “I have no recollection of… before waking up here.” Murdoch risked pressing in on his own shoulder, a hiccup of pain stating his regret to do so.
Watts’s stumble was heard across the right side of the room, then across behind Murdoch. “This is a big room.” He mumbled just loud enough for Murdoch to understand.”An old warehouse..?” His voice trailed off.
Murdoch made himself stand, only to collapse again. His legs hurt. “Detective Watts, this is important.”
Tap. Stumble-tap. Tap. Stumble-tap. Tap.
Watts turned and walked back towards Murdoch, speaking in his usual thoughtful tone. “We went to the docks to investigate the triple homicide. Do you remember that?”
“A… a little.” Murdoch shook his head, as if that would help clear the blurry images in his head. “Did we get into a fight?”
“Not much of a fight.” Watts’ tone was grim, and he sat on the floor against the wall closest to Murdoch. “We went down like… Like… like a sack of…” When his metaphor found no good end, he sighed. “...something.”
“A sack of something.”
“Yes, things that belong in sacks, what belongs in sacks? Apples? No, those belong in barrels,” Watts mused.
“Detective Watts! I believe this whole kidnapping situation is more important than finding a vehicle for your metaphor.” Murdoch hissed after trying to stumble to his feet.
With a sigh, Watts leaned his neck to the side, the popping of a joint loudly echoing in the expanse of the room. “Just trying to lighten the situation. You don’t think this was the doing of the murderer, do you?”
“I have no doubt of that.” Murdoch managed to push his way back to the closest wall with his wounded legs and decent arm, not quite sure where his companion was. “And we must escape. Physically, how are you?”
“I believe I’m faring better than you.” Murdoch heard Watts’ breathing, deep and heavy, calm down. “My leg is… stiff. Not more than that, just stiff.”
Nodding, William Murdoch managed to pull himself back, again, and finally felt his back press the cool stone of the wall, the chill striking through his waistcoat and shirt. He gave a groan, feeling another bout of sick beginning to rise in his gut. “Detective Watts, we… we have to find a way out of here.” He inhaled heavily through his nose and mouth at the same time, as if the air would shove down the gross contents of whatever he had left in his stomach back where it belonged. The efforts were rewarded, and the older detective collapsed back against the wall again, coughing.
“... I certainly hope you’re not ill.” Watts said quietly.
“No, I hope I’m not, either.” Murdoch shook his head.
“... So,” The youth asked, possibly running a hand on his head. “What do we do now?”
Murdoch, knees pulled against his chest and eyes closed in concentration, did not respond. He was willing his organs to keep in place, praying for the illness to cease in whatever stage it was in, and… thinking. Thinking of plans. Escape? Ways out? Where he was and how he could somehow get him and his companion out of this hideous stage. Were they playing out some horrid act for onlookers, or were they left to hang by their feet and die in this room? An immovable grave, a coffin, for two men of the law. Did the architects know this would be a place of death and doom?
His voice rumbled from the alcoves of his throat, so damp with fear that if you managed to wring his words the disquietude would ooze out and soak into your hands.
“We wait.”

An abandoned cabin was a Godsend that Thomas Brackenreid quickly thanked for before hurrying the two slower members inside. George Crabtree backed them up, shutting and barricading the door. He didn't even need to direct the men to a corner that allowed them the best protection from windows and the door. William Murdoch had taken position in front of Llewellyn Watts. The youngest man there burrowed into the borrowed jacket of Brackenreid, eyeing the three of them.
Before he could even get a word in, there were yells outside of the cabin. The windows were thankfully caked over in dirt and grime, both inside and out. "Sousa said they ran this way!" A yelled. "Sousa had his head knocked by the Detective. You sure it wasn't the other way?" B asked. "Are you kiddin'?" C said, annoyed, "Why the fuck would they be goin' to the drops? They would 'ave been hearing 'em before and ran the other way." "All right. Wha' about the cabin?" The two men that were strong enough to fight stood up if necessary. Murdoch also eyed the wall, wondering if he could propel himself into anyone that was stupid enough to barge in given a good hand hold. A dismissed him. "Nah, why would they be that close? They need to get to the Government boys and get those two safe. They wouldn't stop."
A crackle of thunder rang through the air. "Sounds like we should. Wherever they are, they're about to get caught up in a 'pour." "Clegg's not gonna be happy." "Clegg can come and search for them himself," A complained, "The storm will either stop them and we can catch them later, or it's gonna kill them." The three started trailing off, going back the way they came. Brackenreid saw that by scrubbing a bit off the windows and peering out. When they were completely out of sight, he nodded and they each breathed sighs of relief. Before another crack in the sky warned them about the storm coming through. "Right, we're not going anywhere for a while," he muttered, looking around. Watts settled against the wall, curling up into a small ball. He was almost hidden behind Murdoch. The older man appeared to be setting himself up as a physical guard. If he wasn’t also teetering off. "All right, Bugalugs, three hours?" He nodded. Three hours of sleep, three hours on watch. "I'll take first," George said, volunteering himself, "I've had the most sleep out of us right now." Brackenreid nodded, the train ride down and then the search for both of his detectives wearing on his body. He chose a close enough corner to pop up for action before hunkering down. The storm that the men heard came in quickly and loudly. Nothing had been left in the cabin to act as a barrier to the noises outside. It made it harder to listen for enemies. George was completely focused on the door and the rattling windows. Was one going to be a man trying to get in, or the wind about to break it open? Murdoch shook his shoulder to get his attention. "Sir!" he hissed, the situation making him jump. He sat down next to him. "Sorry," he said, sitting down next to him. Brackenreid didn't even move at the sound. Watts looked over at the two of them before settling back down. The two sat there for a few minutes, listening to the storm brew around them. "I'm sorry." George took a glance at him. "About how I've acted." "Sir, as soon as I found out the threat, I completely understood." He shook his head. "Not just the pushing that I did." He looked to Watts, now knowing some of the other events that had been playing out in Station House Four. "I haven't been paying the best attention to those around me. I should have helped search for you after the twins kidnapped you and hurt Effie. I should have known more about what was happening to everyone around me." He sighed, because this was emotions and thought processes that he didn't want to have. Murdoch didn't want to think about how he failed at what he was supposed to be best at. A detective that doesn't think about what was happening to his friend, his best friend. Who, in their right minds, did that? Even if it was unconsciously. "I was too focused on the Black Hand, but I should have at least acknowledged it. Then, Julia and her pregnancy. I..." "Sir. Murdoch," he said, gaining more attention from that, "Instead of apologizing for the past, perhaps you should focus on the future. You know you haven't been doing well, so actively changing that would be a wonderful way of acknowledging it." That, was not what he was expecting. "And I forgive you, at this point. At least you figured your actions were less than helpful for the last few months." Oh. "Effie will not on my behalf, though. She has already told me so. Says you need to be shunned for two years." Murdoch agreed with her. "So, if I need anything, I should send Julia?" "Well," he wavered. The two laughed a bit. George now had some questions. "So, sir, what exactly happened? All I got from the Inspector was that we were going in for you and Watts." A loud clash stopped him before he started. He didn't consider it a good sign, but he regularly ignored them anyway. "Clegg killed what turned out to be a Government official back in Toronto. He threatened Anna and Henry. I went down to New York to check on her and found Clegg's illegal operations," he told, "Then I was approached by Terrence Meyers." Spy shenanigans. "Oh, boy." "Meyers told me Clegg had Watts kidnapped due to information and his translation abilities. I went undercover to find Watts. Clegg was already suspicious about a 'new' member. The fight, actually, helped with throwing off his attention. Then, he saw my face." George turned to him as he relayed that last part flatly. "I woke up taped to a chair before finding out they were going to use me to pressure Watts into giving up the information." "Taped? To a chair?" He nodded. "Yes. Apparently, someone has created a form of the duct tape that I have back home down here in New York. They call it duck tape. Clegg had been using it on his victims." His mind connected the one in Toronto with two more in New York that Meyers told him about. Then, Watts, and himself. It was briefly jarring. "It may also be stronger than the stuff I developed at home. I'm going to find a roll of it to bring back after this is all over." George nodded. This was familiar, normal, and comforting. William Murdoch discussing an invention, then having problems with said invention. Usually it was mechanical. This time, it may have been legal. More so than his automated lawn mower going after the neighbors. The storm was not getting any weaker when Brackenreid took over watch. George and Murdoch both settled along the wall, napping the best they could. He had moved over to the front of the door. If anyone was gonna come harm his men, it would be through his failing body. Which will not be because he had explicit instructions not to die. His wife's orders. The windows barely held, and the door wasn't that good either. Hell, he was reminded of one of the storms that passed through his camp. Loud as the first wave of rifles shooting at the enemy. Many a men woke up thinking they were on the front lines. The cut off whimper he heard made him think that it was just the storm outside. But he looked over to see Watts awake. His arms were over his ears and he flinched at the next thunderous boom that shook the walls. "Watts?" The man approached carefully. He wasn't armed, but the boy had managed a right hook that felt like one of Murdoch's old punching hits. Another loud crack and those arms tried to tighten. "Oh, bloody 'ell," he muttered. The older man tried again. "Watts." He shook his head. "I'm not telling you," he mumbled, "I'm not telling you." What the hell was he talking about? "Watts. Watts, what the hell do you think-" Thomas, you thought it yourself. Your men used to think that thunder was gunfire from the front lines. He wasn't sure why his wife's voice managed to repeat some of his thoughts, but it made a lot of sense. Clegg must have shot a gun near him to threaten him into cooperating. Bloody hell. A tug on his shoulder and he turned to see Murdoch standing by him. "He apparently also shot him trying to escape," he informed, apparently catching that the man had figured one of the reasons for the reaction. The older man carefully moved an arm away from his head. Brackenreid was processing it while Murdoch managed to get an ear free so he could mutter a reassurance that he wasn't in Clegg's hands again. Watts lowered his arms once he realized he was in the cabin, with Brackenreid and Murdoch. The other detective was satisfied that the younger man wouldn't go into a fit when he brought both arms down. He then turned to his inspector. "Also, I'm not the only one that needs to apologize for previous actions." Right. No one was happy when they found out about his threat that came out in a heated moment. The fact that he got innocent people hung always blackened his conscious. He never wanted to think about what would happen if it came to light. What good he had done since then unraveled by overturned convictions, cases reopened. Never mind what would happen to Four. Himself, Murdoch. All of them would be put under a microscope like the ones in the Morgue.
Watts was staring at his shoulder intently, arms wrapped around his legs. He didn’t try to look at the man’s face. It was something that he had trouble with at the beginning, and they were getting somewhere before the problems with Walker and Mr. Strange. Now he was back to ignoring his eyes. There was a small window of merely pounding rain and winds instead of thunder. And he needed to use it wisely. “I wouldn’t have gone through with it,” he admitted.
“Then why did you even threaten me with it?” Watts asked, voice choked, “You know-”
“I know.” He knew as in he lost Glenn Scott his job. As if Percy Giles had more years tacked onto his sentence because he was a homosexual. As Jack Walker had his business destroyed. As Llewellyn Watts would have lost the only family he had anymore. Crabtree, Murdoch, and Doctor Ogden would have still kept up with him, but there was no way he would have kept his job. Or any parts of his life. No one would hire a homosexual like Watts. Scott managed to get a security job. Watts would have been beaten for trying to become a Pinkerton. As if he even would, if the man knew what they did for companies in America. “I know what would have happened. You don’t think I haven’t seen good coppers lose everything?”
“Why?”
He sighed. That wasn’t the why of a detective trying to figure out a motive to a murder done years ago by those that wanted someone to be punished for a crime. The why came from a child man that had an image of a good man ripped away by the truth of something horrible that he had been involved with. “I arrested them. I was sure of my gut and the evidence we had they did it. Then I kept talking to them, listening to why they wouldn’t have done it, why they couldn’t have done it. Why they couldn’t have gotten the murder weapon. And something started to crack in the case. My DCI told me to ignore it and move on. The prosecutor did as well. But my gut got a nasty feeling. And I found one of the pieces of evidence, a gun, was the wrong one. The one they brought to trial had been used with a different crime. When the Defense tried to move on that, they replaced it with the correct one. But it was enough for me to become suspect. It wasn’t enough to stop their hangings. Someone had to pay for the crime, whether or not they actually committed it.”
He couldn’t tell if Watts understood that. His eyes closed when he started talking, taking in the words and playing them out in his mind like a nightmare of his own making. “Guilt by association,” he said, trying to work through this new information. “The knowledge that you knew of a crime and did nothing to stop it.” Brackenreid bowed his head.
“But you did.”
He raised his head back up. The man was surprised at the thought process Watts went through. “You were in the process of trying to clear their names. Just not quick enough before they did. The others are guilty, for knowing the truth. For evidence tampering.” There was a tiny rueful look at that. He remembered his own attempt at keeping the murderer of his brothers behind bars. “The guilt by association is not yours. Not in this case.” The grip of his arms tightened on his legs. The inspector finally realized it was a mock hug he was trying to give himself. “You could have explained it then. I wouldn’t. I wouldn’t have, gone, by what I was thinking. I, we could have-”
“Llewellyn,” he stopped, the very use of his first name quieting the young man and startling him into looking directly into his face. “Someone in Scotland Yard managed to get a false gun used as evidence in a crime then had the real one exchanged in when the Defense motioned for it to be examined. They wouldn’t have allowed their shame to come out.” He steeled himself for the next words. His wife would be proud. “I am sorry, that I used your private life in a hasty decision to stop you from moving forward.” He was surprised, and it was probably the first time in a long time that someone had apologized, sincerely and for a serious reason like this, to him for that.
His further words were stolen away by lightning that was so close as to brighten one of the windows to near daylight. Which meant the clap of thunder after it shook Watts enough for him to try screaming at the noise. Brackenreid reached out and grabbed a hold of him. Tucking him under his chin, the move stopped the instinct and silenced him. “It’s all right, Watts,” he mumbled, feeling him shake when he wrapped his arms around him. If he could quarter Allen Clegg, he would. “If you want to, uh…” He didn’t know how to say it and bloody hell, I need Margaret here. She’s better with this. “Well, I gave Crabtree a hug yesterday.”
He’s not sure if Watts had the same problems with hugging people as Murdoch did, or if society told him he shouldn’t be hugging people not related to him, but his arms were tentative in wrapping around him until he realized that he wouldn’t be pushed off for doing so and got to squeeze and slump into the older man’s hug. I think Crabtree would call it melting.
And if the other two men woke up a bit earlier than their three hours to take over watch, well, they didn’t say anything.
“We should leave now.”
Murdoch sat next to Brackenreid. He had been sleeping on and off during the storms, mostly trying to stay awake for George’s shifts to talk and iron out more issues. But now he was listening to the rain start to lighten, and the majority of thunder left that Watts was sleeping deeply. George had offered his shoulder as a rest while he also got another round of napping. He had been waiting for the storm to have a sudden dark turn again, but nothing had happened for an hour that indicated it was strengthening. It would be the best time to run.
“It’s still dark and raining,” he pointed out.
“The majority of the storm is trailing off. Using both as cover, we might be able to get far enough to a safe point,” he said, looking back to the other two. “This may be the only time we can get out safe.”
The bloody man had a point. He hated the fact that the man made a good point. He got up and checked outside while Murdoch woke the other two. Anyone that was tired immediately jumped awake at the rain that got on their heads once they stepped outside. “Where now?” Watts asked, out of the loop with everything involving Meyers and his help.
“Back to New York?” Crabtree asked.
“Maybe Meyers will find us,” Brackenreid muttered, “Be the right time for an appearance.” Murdoch didn’t say anything as he led them away from the road and to a point he was told about before his own capture.
He said the drops would be easy to find.

Hulu New Releases: July 2021
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg, we heard you like anthologies so we put an anthology in your anthology so you can anthologize while you anthologize.”
The day after American Horror Stories premieres is the release date for McCartney 3,2,1 – a docuseries about Paul McCartney. Peter Jackson’s epic The Beatles: Get Out docuseries is coming to Disney+ in November so hopefully this will be a nice amuse-bouche.
Here is everything else coming to Hulu this month.

Shadows Are Falling
Hi everyone! I hope you’re ok after the last episode of Murdoch Mysteries. Clearly, I was a bit devasted, but clearly, it is one of the best episode in my opinion. Below, what I though about it.
This is just happened in “Murdoch Mysteries “ - Tissues please.
. Brack and George .
My first thought was “ ooohh my God George and Brackenreid are talking about a toy for the baby Murdoch. They’re like a family. And yes William would be a very good father. “
. Noooo Julia .
Well, in the meantime, Julia is having cramps. And...we all knew at that moment what happened right? Thanks to Brackenreid and George, she can go to the hospital. But...we all knew...
Listen to the music, seing Julia in the hospital bed, watching William running to her, earing her says that she was sorry, the moment the Doctor went to William to say him that they lost the baby. That scene was poignant, and even if we could imagined since the day she said she was pregnant that she will probably do a misscariage, I must say, that was sad.
. Jilliam crying .
That moment is heartbreaking. As Julia wake up, William is here, near her, at her bedside. No words. Only a look. The tears. Their. Mine as well. These two people are actors. ACTORS GUYS ! Can you imagine the talent they need to give us shivers, to make us feel the pain of two characters, CHARACTERS! Without a word. WITHOUT A WORD.
. William taking care or Julia .
After this emotional beginning focused on William and Julia, the story takes another way, without occurs the difficult moment they faced. William is taking care of her, that I found very cute and...Oh he pushed a man that “ hurt” Julia. And I believe William becomes violent only when someone hurt the love of his life. Something that was kept along the show !
. Nate is back .
Yeah, that’s not sound good. I’m not sure that was the right moment for that but, we will see...
. Julia is so strong.
She lost her baby last morning and she comes back to the morgue the day after to prove that Nate Desmond didn’t kill anybody. What kind of woman is that? Dr. Julia Ogden, ladies and Gentlemen... Or that is denying perhaps? I sadly believe that it is :(
. Station 1 .
Just in case you forgot it. They are as***l.
. The station 4 is family .
*** Big hugs to all of them *** They care about the Murdochs and they are ...perfect.
. William is in his mind .
I believe this is the first time in the whole show that William Murdoch thinks more about a personnal matter, than an investigation. And we can totally understand him, especially when interviewing a suspect he sees a child and his mother. And that broke our heart. As well when he left to see Julia in the morgue to talk about it, to tell her that there is still a chance... I believe this is right to the character, but...too soon William, too soon.
.Daddy Bracks .
If the Station 4 is a a family, and bit of our family, Inspector Brackenreid is definetly our dad.
.There is still an investigation .
Murdoch Mysteries, is Murdoch Myteries after all. So as Julia and William are dealing with the lost of their baby, they have to put their feelings aside to try to save Nate Desmond. Poor guy, we almost forget him ! So there is an interview, actually two, from the widow and Nate, perfomed by William and Watts. The interviews are at the same time, and I really liked that. Going from one suspect/Detective to another.
. Violet Hart.
It’s not her fault, but SHUT UP VIOLET ! I don’t hate her, but really...no, you really annoyed me, and Julia, in that episode. And first rule if you know Julia Ogden : Don’t say to her what she has to do, never !
. “My Child “.
Oh my heart....oh my heaaaart. Julia said “ MY child” for the first time in the episode. Who said she didn’t want that baby? Who said she didn’t want to be a mother? That she only wanted it for William? Does that person watched that episode? That scene? Because clearly I think that people that don’t understood how much Julia suffered, don’t understand anything at all.
. Oouuhh William.
At the opposite of Julia, William is taking another way to feel his lost. He is angry. Grief is different to everybody because everybody is different. I like that William acted that way ( in a way because I have something to tell about the end later ...) If Julia is denying, trying to continue to live, it’s because it’s hurting her. William express that why anger, helpeness towards the situation, towards Julia, towards the fact he can’t do anything to change that. He blame himself. He blamed Julia but he is furious to feel that against her too.
. Rebecca .
Rebecca is back. I wished she would be back earlier in the episode. I wished to see her with Julia a little time. Rebecca is the only woman, friend, that can understand her and be here for her. The lads at the Station 4, Bracks and George can support William. Who supported Julia? As a woman I mean. Margaret wasn’t in this episode. So it was good to see Rebecca, even if she came for Nate. I wished she would have more time with Julia...
. The scene of William is heartbroken .
And as we think our heart can’t be more broken there is that scene...when William is interviewing again the widow, when Yannick Bisson gave us the best he never did before. ( like in season 4 perhaps when William lost his sister). And then this two stories became one.
. Julia understands .
As a Doctor, as a woman, Julia understands. She went through abortion. We don’t really know anything about that and I believe that now a season 12 is confirmed, that the subject pop-up again, we could know more about her past and her young years. Even if she lost the baby she cared, Julia can makes a difference between wanting a child or not.
. But William can’t understand .
And that leads to the very last scene of the episode...
. The last scene .
As we have the feeling that Julia is dealing fine, that she is strong enough to move on, we see that William is not. All the anger he restraint during the episode, explosed, actually, it was Julia that explosed. And she asks him to leave, that she probably regretted right after. And she cried. And he left.
That scene was emotional And I’m perhaps the only fan that is “ glad” to see the subjet of the abortion back. My only regret is that William slaped that in Julia’s face. I believe this is a normal reaction, but, William...no...don’t do that. Haven’t you both not suffer enough? Truly I was in shock...but truly, I really believe that can be a “normal” reaction. Don’t you ever say something hurting to someone you love because you were broken deep inside? Because you have the feeling that that person can’t suffer as much as you do? Well I did...Nobody is perfect. Everybody has flaws and feelings. I found that scene right to the characters, even if I was angry towards William.
In conclusion: I would like to say that I really loved that episode. We can feel all the emotions growing and growing until the end. I would like to say that Hélène and Yannick are incredible. I would like to say that these two stories where perfects, they complete each others.( Oh by the way Nate was innocent, of course ...) I was deeply touched by the acting. We have to remember that these people are real people. The writers are real people, with feelings and personals stories. Actors are real people with their own life, past and all. They all put a bit of themselves in the stories and the characters they write and acted. That makes Julia, William, Thomas, Henry, George, Watts, Nina, Margaret, alive, that makes us love or hate them, are what they give to us, feelings that touched us. They may be fictionals, but people that created them are real.
I ended that episode and that review with a little node in my throat. And it’s for that too why I love that show. And for that too, that I say : Thank you.
See you next week for another review !
