Council plates is about a lot of things but mostly it's about me being super into the idea of a failed redemption arc. Specifically a failed redemption arc that was a sincere attempt at doing better by others.

"Thousands of trees have been planted by volunteers as part of a new temperate rainforest in south Devon.

More than 2,500 native trees have been planted so far this winter at Devon Wildlife Trust's Bowden Pillars site near Totnes.

The charity said as well as storing carbon, temperate rainforests supported "a super-abundance" of wildlife.

The trust is transforming 30 hectares (75 acres) of sheep-grazed fields into a landscape with 70% tree cover and open glades and wildflower-rich meadows.

The charity said more than a 100 local people planted species including oak, rowan, alder, hazel, birch, willow and holly.

Nick Biggs, an 83-year-old volunteer, said he got involved with the project after being inspired by his apprenticeship with the Forestry Commission in 1958.

"That introduced me to the environment," he said.

"I was really keen to carry on with it and it's good for your fitness just to get out and do something."

The trust said in decades to come the new trees would form a temperate rainforest with high rainfall and humidity.

Helen Aldis from Moor Trees, which supplied some of the saplings, said many had been gathered locally.

She said: "The oak that's going in today is from acorns that we've gathered on Dartmoor that have come back to our tree nursery.

"Our volunteers process those, pop them into the root trainers and then they come out a year or two later to become the woodlands of the future."

'Incredibly rare habitat'

The trust said the damp woodlands used to cover large parts of Britain, but today amount to just 1% of its land area.

Project leader Claire Inglis said: "It's an incredibly rare habitat and we've lost a great deal of it over the years.

"Across the UK there is around 13% woodland cover but in Devon it's actually 11%, so it's lower than the national average."

The trust said the forests supported a variety of birds such as pied flycatchers, woodcock and redstarts, while the damp conditions meant mosses, liverworts, lichens, ferns and fungi thrived on the trees and forest floor.

Ms Inglis added: "The mix of young trees in amongst grass pastures and hedges, along with our commitment not to use pesticides and artificial fertilisers, will be better for local moths, butterflies and bees, along with farmland birds such as yellowhammers and barn owls."

The trust said 7,000 trees would be planted in the first winter with more planned in the future."

Preliminary planning started back in 2011, and in 2020, the reservoir action management plan, a detailed 260-page document was published by the Klamath River Renewal Corporation – the non-profit entity formed to manage the entire dam removal project. ''The document gave us our targets, and has kept us on track," says Joshua Chenoweth, senior ripariani ecologist for the tribe who was hired to manage the revegetation project. Between 2018 and 2021 seed collection crews – many of whom are tribal elders – were hired to harvest native seeds, by hand, in preparation for the dam removal. They collected 98 species and around 2,000lbs (900kg) of seeds. The seeds were then dispatched to specialised nurseries, which propagated them en masse, and sent the seedlings to storage facilities where they were kept until the time came for them to be planted.

When it came to planting the seeds, Chenoweth has used a variety of methods, including seeding by helicopter alongside the old-fashioned way, by hand. Beginning straight after the first draining in late 2023, the team hand-sowed 500 acres of land, including 25,000 acorns. "It really is the most effective restoration tool. And the only reason we used a helicopter was when muddy conditions made it too dangerous for us to walk on the land." The results were "excellent", Chenoweth says. "Despite a hot and dry summer, where we've seeded is green, we're seeing flowering plants teeming with life. I counted eight different butterflies in the areas we hand-seeded. There's moths, hoverflies, bees, birds. It's been a really exciting first year." The team will continue to seed and plant the area for another two years, prioritising the tributaries important for salmon habitat. "The first year has definitely given me a lot of hope," Chenoweth, "but it'll probably get more challenging from here. Now we're completely at the mercy of Mother Nature."

Jomon Period

The Jomon Period is the earliest historical era of Japanese history which began around 14500 BCE, coinciding with the Neolithic Period in Europe and Asia, and ended around 300 BCE when the Yayoi Period began. The name Jomon, meaning 'cord marked' or 'patterned', comes from the style of pottery made during that time. Although the entire period is called Jomon, various phases can be identified based on the style and intended use of the pottery.

Settlement & Subsistence

The people that came to what would be known today as Japan first did so near the end of the last glacial period, or Ice Age, most likely while following animal herds over land bridges formed during the glacial period. When the climate warmed and the land bridges disappeared, the soon-to-be Jomon people found themselves on an island. With the animal herds cut off from their homelands dying off, the Jomon people utilized hunting and gathering to fulfil their needs. Their diet has been found to consist of bears, boars, fish, shellfish, yams, wild grapes, walnuts, chestnuts, and acorns. Evidence of their diet was found inside middens, domestic waste disposal piles, and shell mounds that were found near villages.

Starting around 5000 BCE, the Jomon developed a more sedentary lifestyle settling into villages; the largest one at the time covered around 100 acres (c. 0.4 km²) and had about 500 people. Villages near the sea would have relied heavily on fishing while settlements further inland adopted a primarily hunting lifestyle. In many villages, what are assumed to be ceremonial stone platforms and storage pits have been found. The initial simple shelters of the villages would soon develop into pithouses built around a central fireplace, with a structure supported by pillars, accommodating around five people each. The Jomon people would settle in different areas depending on the changing climate; colder periods would require proximity to the sea as evidenced by much larger mounds of shells and fish bones found compared to warmer periods when the settlement pattern shows a shift to further inland sites in order to take advantage of the flourishing flora and fauna.

Along with the change in habitation, the total population underwent significant fluctuation: by 5000 BCE the population would grow from 20,000 to 100,000, only to grow further to 200,000 by 3000 BCE before falling back to 100,000 by the end of the period. Although the Jomon people had a somewhat sedentary life, the agricultural revolution only came with the introduction of rice farming near the end of the Jomon Period. This was around 900 BCE when along with advanced metalworking techniques rice was brought to southwestern Japan from what is today Korea.

Clover and her favorite 9' tall chainsaw robot

Finally got around to typing up Clover's backstory and how they met. Putting it under the cut for those of you who want to read the Clover and Chip lore :)

Clover is a reindeer Toon from Acorn Acres! She initially worked at Deer and Doe Construction Co. on Walnut Way as a project manager. The enormous logging company that moved in down the street piqued her interest (it's a little hard to miss, after all) and especially the large chainsaw-wielding Cog that works inside it. She noticed Toons frequently entering it and what sounded like battles raging on inside, and that same chainsaw Cog later coming out looking exhausted.

Clover, who had always been a little more than fascinated by the Cogs, was determined to get to know him better. Meanwhile, Chip was at a point where his job had exhausted him enough that he (albeit extremely reluctantly) allowed Clover to talk to him. Perhaps it was a mix of his changing thoughts on Toons, his questioning loyalty towards the company he works for, and a combination of frustrated rebellion and morbid curiosity. Very slowly over time, they opened up to one another, realizing they have more in common than they thought regarding their feelings about work and business. To Chip’s surprise, Clover eventually asked if he had any job positions open at the Logging Co. Having worked in both management and with lumber, she made for a surprisingly good fit at the company.

Being one of the highest ranking and most trustworthy (to their knowledge at least) employees at the company, it didn’t take a ton of convincing from Chip in order to get Clover hired. Clover currently works as a co-manager at CTTC Logging Co. and works alongside Chip, helping him with his managerial duties. The way the Cogs see it, she can help provide some intel on the Toons. She usually just helps out with paperwork and helping the logging company run smoothly, though. They even gave Clover her own suit name - Greenhorn. 

With Clover on board helping take some of the stress off him, Chip seems to have mellowed out just a tad. Of course, the override still looms over both of them, but miraculously has not occurred when Clover’s in the room with him… at least not yet. When an override does occur elsewhere, Clover helps him fill in the gaps in his memory.

Chip also appreciates that he can wholeheartedly talk to her about his work, one of his biggest interests. While Chip enjoys talking to Spruce of course, Spruce is much different in terms of personality. Some of his values differ (he “does not fit into an office environment” as mentioned in his interview, lol.) As a result, some of what Chip talks about with Spruce gets a little lost on him. He appreciates that Clover shares his interests, especially since they work in the same office and can relate and fully understand him. It makes him feel his work is more appreciated, too. <3
