getting ready to pack my over night bag for tomorrow/thursday as i mentally prepare myself to undergo 3 different medical tests at a hospital 3 hours from home all on the same day. i can feel myself mentally spiraling as the day inches closer. one of the tests will require me to have a tube up my nose, leading down into my stomach, as i have to lay & sit in different positions while sipping water. i had to have this same test done as a kid when i was first diagnosed with achalasia & it has haunted me since. i never thought i would need another manometry, but here i am. thankfully, they’re inserting the tube when i am still under anesthesia for my endoscopy, but it will be in when i awaken from that. i’m just scared shitless. i can’t eat or sleep or relax & all i want is for this to be done with.

Yes!!!
And furthermore, Dysphagia is often just a symptom or sign—the first one, even—of other conditions of the throat/esophagus.
It can also have a very slow progression (like months or years slow) that can seem to feel the same for a while before suddenly getting just a bit worse… again… and again… and again… over and over. So if you’re like me from a few years ago, and feel at this time like you’re “managing it” whenever your food sticks by, say:
Drinking water
Tilting your head back
Stretching
Getting up to walk around
…well, you might be managing it right now, but…
…managing is not the same as treatment, and untreated problems tend to get worse.
Since this problem is happening to a VERY IMPORTANT part of your body, it’s a very important problem to address. So PLEASE talk to your doctor about treating it.
Take it from someone who just got diagnosed with Achalasia this week, after years of dealing with swallowing problems which kept gradually worsening despite every attempted “management strategy”, diet change, and acid reflux treatment—you DON’T want to be like me and keep waiting around to get better treatment for an essential part of your body. It took me until the point of becoming underweight and stuck eating a miserably restrictive puréed-food diet to recognize how much I needed better treatment. It SUCKS to be at this point, so PLEASE take care of yourself so you don’t potentially end up in an equally sucky situation.
TLDR: If you can’t swallow food or drink normally, TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT TREATING THAT. Swallowing is an important function of your body, essential to your health and survival—if you aren’t able to eat/drink properly, your whole body can suffer.
hello world!!!
I want to talk to you about swallowing (not in a sexual light)
swallowing is supposed to be:
efortless
automatic
painless
and should happen without conscious thought
choking is supposed to be infrequent
if that does not sound like your swallowing experience you are probably part of the 5-15% of the population that has dysphagia. if your swallowing is bothering you then you can (and should) bring up your concerns to a doctor
swallowing is not supposed to be difficult!

Achalasia cardia is a rare disease in which there is difficulty in swallowing both liquids and solids and the swallowed food is prevented from passing from the esophagus to the stomach.
Cause of this disease: This occurs due to nerve damage in the esophagus, resulting in the esophagus becoming damaged, dilated, its ability to contract and expand is lost, and at the same time the LOS (gateway at the lower part of the esophagus) is narrowed and the food cannot reach the stomach. In this, food accumulates in the esophagus, sometimes coming up into the mouth and feeling bitter in the mouth. Some people mistake it for GERD.
In achalasia, swallowed food comes up from the esophagus, whereas in GERD it comes from the stomach. There is no complete cure for achalasia. Once the esophagus is damaged, the muscle can no longer function properly. However, the symptoms can usually be controlled with the help of medication, endoscopic intervention, and surgery.
Signs and symptoms of achalasia: The signs and symptoms of this disease appear gradually and over time, permanent disability occurs — 1) Inability to swallow food as if food or drink is stuck in the throat; 2) Regurgitation of food or saliva; 3) Heartburn; 4) Belching; 5) Chest pain that comes and goes; 6) Dry cough at night; 7) Pneumonia (food regurgitates into the lungs and causes infection) 8) Frequent vomiting; 9) Weight loss.
Causes of achalasia: The exact cause has not yet been determined. Researchers believe that the main cause is nerve damage in the esophagus. Some have attributed it to viral infections and autoimmunity. Others have also attributed it to hereditary birth defects or some other unknown viral infection.
Diagnosis of achalasia: This disease is often not detected or misdiagnosed in routine examinations because its signs and symptoms are similar to those of other diseases. The following tests are used to diagnose this disease— 1) Esophageal manometry: This test measures whether the esophageal muscle's ability to contract and expand rhythmically to move food from the throat to the stomach is intact; 2) Barium swallow X-ray: After the patient is given a chalky white drink, the contraction and expansion of the esophagus and the opening or narrowing of the LOS or gateway in the lower part of the esophagus are seen. 3) Endoscopy: This test shows the dilation of the esophagus, the food accumulated in the esophagus, and the tightness of the LOS or gateway in the lower part.
Treatment of achalasia: The main goal of this treatment is to widen the narrowed LOS or gateway in the lower part of the esophagus so that food and drinks can easily pass from the esophagus to the stomach without obstruction.
The appropriate treatment depends on the patient's age, physical health condition and the severity of the disease. 1) Treatment through medication: Calcium channel blockers or Nitroglycerin-like medications; 2) Treatment through endoscopy: Botulinum toxin is applied through endoscopy; The narrowed LOS is widened by inflating a balloon through endoscopy; POEM (Peroral Endoscpic Myotomy) is a small surgery through endoscopy to widen the LOS; 3) Surgical treatment: Laparoscopic surgery is performed by Heller Myotomy or Fundoplication.
Above all, through lifestyle changes — Take time, slowly, and develop the habit of chewing and swallowing food well; Drink plenty of water with meals; Make it a habit to go to bed at least 3 hours after eating; Keep the head of the bed elevated or use two pillows instead of one.
To prevent acid reflux from the stomach after balloon dilation or surgery, the following foods should be avoided — Sour fruits, tomato ketchup, chocolate, alcohol, coffee, etc.; If you can take PPI drugs along with it, you can get the desired results.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition in which stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation and discomfort. While many patients find comfort through lifestyle changes and medications, some cases require surgical intervention to effectively control the symptoms. just got done with my billionth endoscopy over the course of my life so far. currently in bed relaxing now with a swollen & irritated esophagus. everything went well though, and surprisingly this time i somehow don’t even have a blister on my lip from it😂 the anesthesia they use to sedate me always makes me feel so emotional after. thinking about so much right now even in the hazy state i’m in. the photo next to the pic of me is a photo of kurt cobain post endoscopy. one of my greatest heroes. kurt suffered from a stomach condition, and although he didn’t have the same illness as me, i’ve always related to him so much in that aspect. i’m truly thankful that kurt has brought so much healing to my soul over the years through his art. ✨ it’s hard to be someone who is such a mess all the time, my body constantly fighting against me. today before my procedure, my doctor spoke to me about how if i don’t get some relief soon from the esophageal dilation and new stomach acid medication, i could definitely be looking at traveling to a specialist & having another huge operation done..something i have always wondered if i would ever hear again. and then it hit. and it hit hard when i heard the words. because suddenly i was a scared 10 year old girl again..hearing that she needed a big operation to be able to have any quality of life. i have always feared going through the hell of what i went through again. being on a morphine pump for days, in and out of consciousness and writhing in pain when i wasn’t severely fucked up. that operation changed me, and the fear of hearing i may have to go through it again is very real and unsettling. i am so thankful for the health i do have..i try to count my blessings every single day on this planet. all of us are going through something, this is just a part of my story..✨
