B-29 Beter 'N' Nutin
flickr
B-29 Beter 'N' Nutin by TK622 Via Flickr: B-29 S/N 42-24538 of the 676th Bomb Squad, 444th Bomb Group, 58th Bomb Wing, 20th Air Force. The plane arrived in India in September 1944 and was initially named Monsoon Goon but the name was eventually changed to Beter 'N' Nutin while still in India. The 58th Bomb Wing was moved from the China Burma India Theater to the Pacific in early 1945. The photo was likely taken while still in India. Beter 'N' Nutin flew missions from Tinian until August 1945 when it returned to the US. It was eventually scrapped. The camels represent a trip across the Himalayas, nicknamed "The Hump" by aircrews. The mission markers with a heart below it represent missions in which the aircraft was damaged by enemy action. A variant of it with red hearts indicated bloodshed by the crew. I have the feeling that the nose art might be based on the Li'l Abner Comic character Mammy Yokum or a similar comic character of the time.

Billie Hayes (August 5, 1924 – April 29, 2021)  Television, film, and stage actress, best known for her comic portrayals of Witchiepoo and Lil' Abner's Mammy Yokum.
Hayes was best known for her comic portrayal of Witchiepoo on NBC's Sid and Marty Krofft television series H.R. Pufnstuf. Her characteristic cackle and animated physicality were notable during the show's 17-episode run in 1969–70. She reprised this role in The Paul Lynde Halloween Special and the second and final season of The Banana Splits Adventure Hour (September 6-December 13, 1969) on NBC. Hayes portrayed a similar character in other roles, including a 1971 episode of Bewitched ("Hansel and Gretel in Samantha-Land"), Weenie the Genie in the Sid and Marty Krofft program Lidsville, and Maw Weskitt in Episode 39 of the second season of The Monkees ("Hillbilly Honeymoon").  She also appeared on the soap opera General Hospital as Robert Scorpio's mentor O'Reilly in 1981 and 1985. Newspaper Comics in the1960's; Lil' Abner and Me
Newspaper Comics in the1960’s; Lil’ Abner and Me
I was once an avid reader of the Sunday Funnies.  I loved the madcap world of Dogpatch, Lil’ Abner, Mammy Yokum, and all.  I also loved Pogo and his creator, Walt Kelly, but I’m sure you probably realized that already.  I believe I basically grew up in Dogpatch.  Rowan, Iowa is a small rural farm town.  Romance is basically a matter of running away from the girls and eventually tiring out enough…

RIP PETER PALMER
1931-2021
Tumblr media
Peter Palmer was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is best remembered for his role as Abner Yokum in the 1956 Broadway production and 1959 film adaptation of the musical comedy LI’L ABNER.  He won a 1956 Theatre World Award for the role. On stage, he starred opposite Edie Adams (later Mrs. Ernie Kovacs) as Daisy Mae.  The stage musical was also the debut of Valerie Harper, who later appeared on Broadway with Lucille Ball in WILDCAT.  Throughout the 1950′s, the comic strip Li’l Abner by Al Capp was one of the most-read strips in history, and references became a part of pop-culture, mentioned on several episodes of “My Favorite Husband” even on “I Love Lucy.”

In 1981, Lucille Ball cast Palmer (above right) in her one and only (official) directing credit - a pilot for NBC titled “Bungle Abbey” starring Gale Gordon. This failed sitcom about a group of monks, was one of Lucille Ball’s few projects for the Peacock network, who had wooed Lucy away from CBS with much fanfare in 1980. For the pilot, he was re-united with his LI’L ABNER film co-star William Lanteau. Lanteau first appeared with Lucille Ball in The Facts of Life (1960). In addition to an episode of “The Lucy Show,” Lanteau did four episodes of “Here’s Lucy,” and the 1964 special “Mr. and Mrs.”

Palmer died in Florida at the age of 90. He was married twice and had six children.
