Unsure if I should watch Judgement at Nuremberg. It does seem like a well crafted, significant movie with a solid cast. But because it's fictionalized with characters and not the real people, I don't know if I'd be better off reading the real history than a three hour trial drama

Kojak - 1970s police drama game changer
Kojak was one of the great true crime police series of the 1970s with Telly Savalas as the lollipop sucking detective
When the police drama Kojak aired on the CBS TV channel in 1973, critics and audiences knew this was a game changer. There had been plenty of cops and robbers TV shows up until the early 70s but Kojak brought a new gritty realism and quality that had too often been missing. When it started broadcasting on the BBC in the UK, British reviewers presented Kojak as a new start for the police genre.…

25 of 250: Favorite Films - Judgment at Nuremberg
Not long ago, work colleagues and I got into a discussion about what our favorite films were. Given my categorical nature I could not resist writing down a list and, as a writing challenge, have decided to write 250 word reviews of my favorite 25 films of all-time. Note: these are my favorite films, not what I think are the best films of all time.
Tumblr media
Directed by: Stanley Kramer
Written by: Abby Mann
Starring: Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster, Richard Widmark, Marlene Dietrich, Maximilian Schell, Judy Garland, Montgomery Clift, William Shatner
Year/Country:  1961/United States
Trivia question: who is the lowest billed actor to win Best Actor at the Oscars? The answer is Swiss actor Maximilian Schell for Judgment at Nuremberg. Stanley Kramer’s tense Holocaust trial film is at once grandstanding and surprisingly nuanced. The credit for that belongs mostly to screenwriter Abby Mann and a lightning in a bottle performance by Schell.
The film is a fictionalized account of the Judges Trial (part of the post-WWII Nuremberg Trials). The trials for all the major Nazis are done and now it’s the regime’s lesser officials turn. Judge Haywood (Tracy) is the chief justice deciding the case. In the dock are four high profile German judges, including former Minister of Justice Janning (Lancaster). We witness various examinations and cross examinations and follow Judge Haywood as he genuinely attempts to understand what happened in Germany.
The miracle of this film is that the outcome of the trial is seriously in doubt. Mann’s screenplay understands the motives of many Germans weren’t cut and dry. It even questions the legitimacy of the trials at all; in the words of defense attorney Rolfe (Schell), “I could show you a picture of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Thousands and thousands of burned bodies. Women and children. Is that their superior morality?” It’s clear from Rolfe’s first cross-examination of a witness that this movie will be special. Schell is relentlessly logical. He picks apart each witness so thoroughly you believe the defense can win, and it’s easy to see why Schell won his Oscar.

StrangeSpot, Round Fifteen: Mann
All play and no work makes Junior a happy boy.
(Not sure what’s going on with Kaylynn’s maid hair missing chunks! It’s fine when it’s not the maid version, as seen in the hot tub. I’ll look into it eventually)

Like an old married couple - Chapter 18
You missed him. You missed being in his company. You missed cooking with him. You missed his friendship and your conversations. You missed helping him with his boat and building your model ship while he was working on his boat. All in all you missed him and all that was him greatly.
He missed you. Your presence in his house made it a home again. Cooking with you and for you was not simply because he had to eat, but to spoil and woo you as good as he could. He missed your laughter and your happiness and building both ships, his and yours.
Without knowing it, you both were longing greatly for each other. But it shouldn't be.
In the office the tension was high. You two tried to avoid each other at all costs, but in all honesty you were both pining away for each other.
Your colleagues suspected that something had happened between you, but they didn't dare to ask.
Sometimes you met in the hallway. Then you greeted shortly and were going your way. It was a total contrast as before.
Something was clearly very wrong. Not good, not at all.
Abby tried to talk to you about it “Y/N, what's the matter? What happened between Gibbs and you. I'm seeing that something's wrong. Before your illness you seemed so close and now you avoid and barely speak to each other. I'm worried about you two.”
You sighed “nothing really happened. We lived together for a short while, he cared wonderfully for me and we kissed. Then I left to go back into my own apartment.”
“You kissed??!!” Abby screamed and jumped happily up and down. “But wait a moment…why are you not happy and don't speak to each other?”
“I don't know” you said sadly shrugging your shoulders.
“You should talk to him. I just wanna see you both happy” Abby said earnestly.
Before you could say anything Gibbs was walking into the lab “who you wanna see happy, Abs?”
“The family of the victim when you find the murderer” you answered and left the room.
Abby reported to him what she had found. Then she was silent. Gibbs turned to her “what's the matter?”
“What happened between you and Y/N?” she asked him.
“Nothing. Any more questions?” he snapped.
Wow, usually he didn’t snapped at her, so there had definitely happened something on both sides. But since she didn't want to provoke him further she shook her head “no” and he left returning to the bullpen.
The rest of the day was thankfully pure standard. You immersed yourself in the new concept of user rights you had to build, which distracted you of your sad thoughts. You worked late and as you looked up everyone, even Gibbs, had left.
Wait, Gibbs had finished work for the day? It's way too early for him. That's very unusual for him and you hoped that he is not sick. So you decided to finish work for today too and drive over to him. Maybe you can help him in any way. If he was not sick, maybe you can help him working on the boat and talk to him about your “relationship”. You missed dearly working together in his basement.
So you drove to his house where his car was standing. He was home, good. You entered the house and were about to announce your presence with a loud “hello”, but then you heard voices coming from the basement. Curiously you neared the steps and then you saw them. A beautiful red haired woman was standing very close to him and was flirting with him. So that was the reason that he rejected you, now you knew. You felt the tears well up and your heart broke. As silently and fast as you could you were leaving his house with the firm intention to never return again.
This night you cried yourself to sleep once again. You felt as if your heart was shattered beyond repair. Your dream was over, he had another woman in his life.
The next day was the usual concerning work. But there she was, the lady from Gibbs’ house. Obviously military and named Col. Mann. Yes, she was beautiful and silently you wished them luck as you felt some tears moisten your cheeks. So you tried to concentrate on work and not to think about them, which you managed barely.
Thankfully you had a lunch date with Ducky this day and you two had a wonderful time. He was just so sweet and could tell story after story, you could listen to him for hours.
Suddenly he fell silent and asked worried “What happened between you and Gibbs?” “Nothing” was your short answer.
“Y/N…I know you both and I am worried about you. Something's not right. You're not laughing anymore and always looking sad and he…he speaks even less than usual, if that's even possible. So tell me, what happened?”
So you sighed and told him what you told Abby plus your discovery yesterday evening.
Ducky listened and then tried to calm you down “I can't believe that something's going on between him and Col. Mann. He is so into you. I thought he told you, but obviously he did not.
Y/N, he was the one that carried you out of the helicopter. He did CPR the whole time until the ambulance arrived and he refused to leave your side. He stayed by your side and held your hand until you woke up and I never saw him so desperate before.”
You smiled sadly at him “thanks Ducky, but I think this time you are wrong.” You looked at your watch” time's up, we have to go.” With that you both were heading back to the NCIS building.
Later that day Ducky called for Gibbs to come down to him. He immediately came to the autopsy and as he entered Ducky asked him to close the door of his office.
“What's the matter, Duck?” Gibbs asked him. “That's what I'm asking you” Ducky responded. Gibbs looked puzzled at him “I don't understand.”
“I want to know what happened between you and Y/N.”
“Nothing. Can I go?”
“Did you noticed that she's not laughing anymore? That she's always sad? And you…you are more silent than usual. So I'm asking you again, what happened?”
“Not what I wanted to happen. We kissed, but she has a boyfriend, so nothing more happened” Gibbs explained getting slowly annoyed.
“Are you sure that she has a boyfriend? Why should she be kissing you then? And why should she be living with you during her recovery and not with him? Think about this and talk to her, Jethro. That's the only thing I'm asking of you” Ducky tried reasoning him.
The two old friends looked at each other in a silent conversation. Then Gibbs turned on his heels and went back to the office.
Ducky's words were running through his head the rest of the day. Should he try to speak with you? Maybe Ducky was right. He saw you once in the afternoon and you really didn't look happy. You looked as he felt - miserable. Okay, after work he will pull himself together and speak with you about what's going on.
The rest of the day he was so immersed in his work, that he didn't noticed when you left the building. So he grabbed the keys and drove over to your apartment with the full intention to clear this once and for all.
But as he parked his car, got out and wanted to go to you he stopped dead in his tracks. He didn't expected what he saw there and that let the blood in his veins freeze. You and Simon were standing in front of the window. You were standing close to each other and then you were hugging tightly.
He felt the building of the lump in his throat and how his stomach was twisting in knots. It felt like a massive punch to his stomach and someone stabbing his heart.
He was right. He was right and he hated it. Once again his heart shattered into a million pieces. Without making his presence known he got back into his car and drove him to a night full of bourbon.
As he entered the bullpen in the next morning the first thing he saw was you coming down the steps from Jenny's office. Why were you there? He didn't know, but suddenly he was furious. So he stormed towards you.
You had spoken to Jenny and were going down to the office with your head hung. You didn't see him coming and were suddenly pulled into an empty room and were pushed against the nearest wall.
You saw yourself confronted with a very angry Gibbs who was pressing himself to you to hold you in place. “How could you do that? How could you do that to me? Playing with me while your boyfriend was waiting for you? Wanted to know how it is like to kiss a superior? You know what? I will give you another sample” he hissed at you furiously and then he kissed you wild, angry and open mouthed. As if he wanted to punish you and stake his claim at the same time.
That was so not him. You didn't know what he was going on about and you felt like you didn't know him anymore. So you pushed. You pushed him away from you as hard as you could and you slapped him. Who did he think he was?
You were standing a few feet away from each other panting hard, eyes locked. Then you turned and fled out of the room and away from him. “Y/N. Y/N!” you heard him shout behind you, but you didn't stop. You ran. You ran out of the building and drove to your apartment all of the way crying hard all the time.
(To be continued...)

NCIS S21E02- The Stories We Leave Behind
Tumblr media
Is that too harsh? Maybe it's too harsh.
Let me preface this by saying, I can only imagine how hard it must've been to write and film this episode. It's one reason why I don't write DeathFics, and those are only fictional people. Writing the passing of a real person, a friend and a colleague? Must be one of the hardest things to do as a writer.
So maybe that's why this felt so incredibly flat. Maybe trying to find that balance between dealing with the death and moving on dulled the emotional punch of it all? Because beyond the opening and closing, this was barely more than a clip episode shows throw in the middle of a season to save money. And of those flashbacks, we could only get ones with 3 characters who are still on the show, because Knight, Parker and even Torres didn't really know him. (I'll mention the Gibbs flashback in a second.) So you had this random assortment of clips that were supposed to engender emotions, but did the opposite in a way- because they weren't immediate reactions (they were memories), it actually lessened the emotional impact. You know what flashback would've been a kick to the gut? How about someone mention Cate, and then show us the clip of Ducky and Cate together? Then you would've gotten the one-two punch of 2 beloved characters now gone. Because if you're going to show a scene between Gibbs and Ducky that no one was present to see (using Ducky's journals as your 'out'), you could've shown Cate or Jenny or Ziva.
By not showing the funeral, fans missed out on a proper send off and a true tie-in with the past. I know Brian Dietzen said they didn't want it to be crammed full of guest stars, but the only guest star we got was a 3 minute cameo by Michael Weatherly?? If they'd had a funeral, they could've filled the church with faces we remembered and given characters/actors a chance to pay their respects. Imagine the nostalgia in seeing Hollis Mann, Jordan Hampton, Gerald Jackson, Ziva David (would've made sense since they brought Tony back), Abby Sciuto (I know, there are off-screen problems w/PP), Rachel Cranston, etc. I know Jessica Walter has also passed away, but what about the rest of Ducky's detective group? What about Jack Sloane? Yes, I know these may have added more storytelling time (particularly Abby and Jack) but did we need McGee's poison ivy flashback?
Other issues:
What happens to Nicholas Mallard? You know, Ducky's half-brother.
What happens to Gibbs' house?
What was the actual proof that the senator was dirty? I mean, real forensic proof? I didn't seem to hear anything other than Parker reading off the autopsy report and the Marine. Or I guess we're just meant to think that ruined his career? Because they didn't charge him with murder or anything.
The entire story hinged on McGee remembering one of the pictures hid a safe? Like Ducky's only clue to an important case was a cryptic line in his journal? smh
This was... this was just not good. One of, if not THE most beloved character on this show and we got a clip episode.
Which brings me back to the Gibbs flashback: As soon as they showed the picture of Gibbs and Ducky on the bookshelf, I knew we weren't going to see Mark. And that disappoints me more than it should, really. After tonight, we should never, ever see Gibbs on this show again, because there will be no bigger reason for him to return than Ducky's death, and he didn't show. Any reason after tonight will be bullshit and a slap in the face to the fans who supported and fell in love with the Gibbs/Ducky friendship. I'm so bitterly disappointed.

cpc characters and how i think they would play the hit game team fortress 2 (the most necessary post i've ever made)
abbi: i definitely feel like she would come from overwatch because i can see her really liking the overwatch characters. sadly i dont know a lot about overwatch but YOU SEE WHERE I'M COMING FROM. she plays demoman and is really good at landing pills :) also DEFINITELY goes all out on her loadout. probably spends a lot on hats. speaking of hats
monika: she likes the hats and ABSOLUTELY collects then... the pocket pyro she would totally have... but would reasonably get too scared of playing in public servers, i too would be afraid of the sweats yelling at me. when she does play i'd see her on mann vs machine with the club! otherwise i feel like she'd play sniper because she avoids more people that way lmao
prez: she's a spy main. enough said. she's just... so spy vibes. watch any jontohil spy video and tell me that isnt prez... she loves overthinking spy gameplay and getting into the enemies minds and stuff. uses stock loadout primarily but would definitely experiment in the other weapons because she is a spy sweat. i cannot emphasize this enough but she's literally that one spy in each game that everybody hates. dominates the leaderboard probably. has a really simple loadout, maybe like a single hat or something. she keeps it simple
syrah: plays any class in the most annoying way possible, needs no further elaboration (she's the scout that dies a lot)
saffron: honestly... pyro. saffron on pyro. let him set shit on fire. i feel like he'd play the defense classes tbh!
frederick: ENGIEEEE!! ENGINEER!!!! he starts playing engineer because of the lack of people who play him. engine being the underrated backbone of the team. uncle dane's descriptions of engineer would vibe with frederick i think. playing engineer is like playing those restaurant managing games, and when you go engineer... it's like you're in your own little world during games, managing teleporters and dispensers and stuff. Frederick
whitney: medic once he figures out how the game works. he just likes supporting his team. also really hard to kill for some reason and it probably annoys the other team a lot. let him play battle medic even
jolie: heavy weapons guy...idk why... but what if... she likes the cosmetics heavy has and has the pajamas one (i have the pajamas one :3)
aurelia: plays any class in the most toxic way possible. she loves it. definitely shit talks on vc
renee (with accent): I THINK SHE'D LIKE SCOUT... she loves picking out cosmetics and dressing up her character like a doll. truly this is the spirit of tf2

"Isn't it wonderful? Two strangers on a ship. We will never meet again. And we can talk. We can talk like friends. Or even lovers. We can talk like two people who meet on the other side of the grave."
'Ship of Fools', dir. by Stanley Kramer (1965). (screenplay by Abby Mann)
