NORTHANGER ABBEY — send a muse + your favourite trope and i’ll write a drabble/blurb.
fernando alonso and falling asleep on their partner but it's nando who falls asleep
i love u sm <3 have a great day angel
for the nando podium today 🫶
SLEEPY. ❨ fernando alonso x reader ❩
never in your whole relationship with fernando had there been such an exciting race weekend. the first race back after the summer break and you couldn’t have been happier to accompany fernando to the dutch grand prix. exploring amsterdam, watching every free practice, taking an abundance of photos despite fernando’s protests.
what could you say? you were proud. two weeks spent lounging on a boat in spain, skin sun kissed and days long, you could sense fernando’s itch to get back on the track. you were the most important thing on earth to him, but racing was his element — and he looked so attractive doing it.
“good luck,” you whispered to him just before he got in the car, grasping at the front of his race suit. fernando pressed a doting kiss to your lips, admiring how you looked in the green aston martin jersey.
“see you on the other side,” he whispered back, pecking your nose sweetly before he slipped his helmet on and disappeared onto the track. like always, your blood pressure soared as he rounded each corner on the track; even more so when the rain started to pour on the dutch track.
but he crossed the finish line in P2, his seventh podium that season, and all of the love you had inside for him spilled across the aston martin garage. every engineer and worker in sight hugged you tighter than ever. arm linked in kelly’s, you watched as both boyfriends celebrated their wins. sprayed with champagne, fernando’s eyes found yours down below, and in one look you heard a million words. more clearly, just three.
he must have kissed you fifty times since getting off the podium, not caring what cameras were watching. he was ecstatic, leg bouncing in the car back to the hotel. max had invited everyone out for dinner, as it was his home race, but fernando could barely let you get ready for kissing you.
“nando, we’re going to be late if you don’t let me do my hair,” you giggle against his lips, the weight of his body on top of yours warm and comforting. he groans, slipping his chin into the crook of your neck.
“can we stay here?” he mumbles. “i’m tired. and i can think of better things to do than go out…”
his tone turns suggestive, fingers slipping under the hem of your shirt. you slap at his teasing, shoving your boyfriend off of you with a roll of your eyes. in the reflection of the hotel mirror, his eyes never leave you. god, he was sickeningly in love with you.
“you look beautiful, mi amor,” he murmurs, muffled from the kiss he presses to your temple. dapper in his shirt and trousers, you happily snap a picture for your pleasure and drag him down to the hotel restaurant.
the dinner goes on for hours, full of food and drink and laughter. it’s around half past midnight when some drivers begin to fizzle out and go home, max and charles still ordering shots from the bar. you’re half listening to one of carlos’ stories when you feel a strange weight on your shoulder. tucked into your right hand side, fernando’s head has dropped to sleep on you, his hand still rested on your thigh.
you glance down, trying not to wake your tired boyfriend, and smile fondly. he was wrecked, after a day full of media commitments and congratulations after congratulations. the sight of him was adorable, lips turned downward and eyes gently creased at their sides. you were glad no one else had noticed, for fernando’s sake if nothing else, and gently roused him with a rub of his arm.
“baby? come on, let’s go to bed,” you whisper, and you swear your heart melts inside of you when his droopy eyes raise to yours. he was just adorable, furrowed brows and fingers squeezing at your skin. he nods silently, pulling himself up from the chair. you make your excuses for you both, kissing all of the boys goodbye, before you follow the sleepy fernando to the elevator.
you take his hand, guiding him the right way, and he finally rests against you when you’re inside of the lift. he smells vaguely of his cologne, faded from the long night, your face pressed to his chest as he sways you both gently in your climb to the twentieth floor.
“bed time?” he mumbles, drowsy, stepping out and heading towards your room. you nod in agreement, suppressing a giggle at his tired state. he lets you undress him when you’re safe behind locked doors, slowly and softly undoing every button on his shirt, leaving behind a trail of kisses on the skin underneath.
by the time your own dress is hung up and your makeup removed, he’s out like a light. taking a moment, you stand at the edge of the bed and admire him. his back muscles rippling every time he shifts on the mattress, hair already tousled. somewhere in your stating he wakes, at least you think, grunting and reaching out for you to join.
gladly, you appease him. under the covers, fernando bundles you up in his strong hold and doesn’t let go until morning. and even then, he’s not letting you go too far.

modern west wing social media hcs
i feel like charlie would have the most normal social media acct and following, like maybe an instagram where he posts pictures of himself (mostly for family), and like a twitter where he occasionally retweets his friends or bartlet. he likes making fun of other people (especially senior staff) for being too stuck to their devices, and a large online presence would take away that ability
CJ’s twitter is less incendiary than she’d like, since she’s the face of the bartlet administration, and so a lot of it is discussing policy or clarifying briefings. she does retweet a lot of good edu sites or interesting articles she finds. she herself trends a lot, she’s pretty famous online as a political icon ala AOC or bernie sanders, and she gets a lot of edits made online from press conferences (which she enjoys bragging abt to the other staff, while making fun of them for being out-of-touch). CJ also has a private instagram that hogan had her make, but she only posts extremely blurry pictures of coffee and her goldfish with captions like “hogan said to post to remind people that im alive”. toby always replies with “sending the pictures to MOMA. breathtaking” and danny replies with “breaking news. press secretary reveals she is still alive. more at 7”.
leo does not have social media because he still has a flip phone and a brick laptop. he says he prefers hearing bad news out loud or reading it on physical paper, but really, he just can’t figure out how to work it. im talking types “google” into google, then types “hello find me a map of the united states of america” in the search bar. margaret tried to help but seeing him type google into google physically pained her
josh is banned from twitter (after he pissed off three midwestern states, basket weavers, and most hollywood producers in the first week in office). cj regularly checks to make sure he hasn’t made a new account. he has a public instagram, but cj looks over captions before he posts (he once tried to ask the president for permission to get a new account but the president sided with cj). most of his posts are about encouraging people to vote or be more politically active. he is also not allowed to reply to comments on the instagram, so he reads them out loud in a mocking voice to donna. unbeknownst to him, there is a white house deputy chief of staff twitter page run by donna (with cj’s permission) that discusses white house initiatives and shares fun anecdotes abt day to day work. anytime someone tells josh they love his twitter account he assumes they mean instagram, and nobody tells him until bartlet is two years out of office
donna, like charlie, has an instagram mostly for her family back home, but also has a twitter where she talks about tv shows she likes and her hobbies, that has a decent following. she might have a tumblr but again it would be abt tv shows and hobbies she has
toby is on goodreads and instagram (but only to leave sarcastic comments on his friends’ posts). he hates twitter’s word count limit and how it’s owned by elon musk, and rants abt it often. he leaves lengthy reviews on any political commentary article in the comments section. this has been brought up in the briefing room, to the point where cj has a recording of herself saying “toby ziegler’s online rants are not indicative of president bartlet’s views. if you have any questions please direct them to ziegler himself”
president bartlet has facebook </3. there’s a white house twitter page run by an intern, but he’s not involved with that. he posts fun facts about national parks or ancient latin novels, but each fact starts with something like “joshua lyman, 🧍‍♂️deputy chief of staff, 🇺🇸doesn’t understand the true beauty of yellowstone national park 🙄🏞🏜🤦‍♂️”. most people think it’s a parody account and cj doesn’t want to correct them
abbey does not have facebook, despite her husbands insistence that it’s better than twitter. on the rare occasions she uses her account it’s mostly to discuss important medical breakthroughs and her daughter’s work
sam has a really popular instagram, where he posts selfies and pretty pictures of the white house and captions like “having a great day at work today!” or “white house at sunset.. gorgeous”. he posts on his story a lot, and comes off as very relatable to the public. he’s cj’s dream social media user
will bailey runs campaign social medias pretty well but his own twitter account is mostly for promoting the campaigns. occasionally he retweets stuff his friends post, or tweets out funny jokes he hears.
margaret is tumblr famous, but never posts abt her job. her posts regularly wind up on other sites. she hasn’t told anybody and doesn’t plan to

hiii me agaian! so yk how in the social media au they have phones?? i have a very funny idea there is someone who keeps on filming ever fight that happens, like it dosnt matter where ITS FILMIED and posted on some place like world star (me n my home girl were talking about this and we said its june)
This would happen DEFINITELY, every fight recorded and uploaded, you'd have even those nuns at the perfume abbey pulling out their phones and capturing everything. This is how people find out about the Avatar and fan groups start forming over who is whose favourite fighter, then they start having fandom wars like irl.

Cowbell and Special specific headcanons, because they're living in my head rent free right now. Let's go.
-Special is largely in charge of the church's social media accounts, some of the event planning and merch, and occasionally makes trips with the band ghouls to act as a techie, but he's primarily a work from home kinda guy.
-Cowbell is retired, and spends most of his time gardening or taking concerningly long "naps"... with his eyes open... and not breathing... but every time the medical staff checks him out, he's... he's weird but he's okay.
No, really, that's in his health records, "Weird, but okay."
-They both seem to have separation anxiety, in that if one of them goes out without the other, the one left behind gets lonely and the one who left feels guilty and then does not enjoy their outing.
It's hard to tell when Cowbell is lonely, truth be told, being very difficult to read to begin with, but he does this thing where he gets all limp and sighs constantly and it's almost comical in a way, but Special just outright chews on the furniture when Cowbell is gone.
It's a mess.
-Cowbell sometimes manifests inside of the greenhouse when Mountain is in there just to scare him, because, "I like bullying him. He is fun to bully. I want to bully him more."
No one is sure why he decided this was going to be his goal in life, but Mountain has gotten so used to it that when it's NOT him making the noise, that scares him more.
-Special, despite being sociable and generally quite friendly, has a hard time making friends, especially with the other ghouls, because he acts "too human" at times, and while the band ghouls think he's chill, the other ghouls hanging around the abbey think he's strange.
Cowbell bites them.
This doesn't fix anything, he just wakes up and chooses violence sometimes.
And lastly;
-Cowbell sometimes wanders around at night and gets lost, and keeps winding up in Swiss' room, but is too polite to wake him up, and too awkward to actually say he's lost, so he just stands there and stares at him.
Swiss is convinced Cowbell is a sleep paralysis demon.

Here's what may very well be in my opinion one of the most interesting pieces of "What Could Have Been" or "cancelled media" that I think could've actually been awesome. So here's everything that I was able to gather on it and it was a looooooooooot.
Originally back in 2011/12, Dwayne McDuffie conceived of and was looking to develop a Gwen and Charmcaster spin-off series which he mapped out a fair amount of it and actually planned it out through-and-through. But what ended up happening to throw it out the window was as simple as can be — Dwayne McDuffie died. Therefore it ended up getting replaced with the still polarizing Omniverse.
So let's begin, shall we:
The tentative title for the series or rather idea was "Where The Magic Happens", named after the Ultimate Alien episode of the same name. Ledgerdomain was to be one of the main primary locations in the spinoff.
It was to take place a week after the events of UA's series finale and pick up Charmcaster's storyline from where it left off with the episode "Couples Retreat". Dwayne McDuffie liked both characters so much that he thought the two could hold their own show together.
Ashley Johnson and Kari Wahlgren were obviously gonna reprise their roles but Gwen would've had a different look from time to time. As in sometimes she would be in her AF look and other times she would be in her UA look.
The premise was essentially gonna be this:
Gwen and Charmcaster were gonna become unlikely and hesitant allies who team up to protect Ledgerdomain and fight crime with Gwen deciding to use her powers to help others full on and Charmcaster doing whatever it can to save her home.
Tumblr media
A main plot point would've been Gwen developing a type of PTSD due to several things she's been through throughout the previous three shows, especially this scene from the OG episode "The Return". Being crushed by a tower as a child is giving her reoccurring nightmares that begin affecting her life only for Charmcaster to help her through it seeing as she owes it to her after "Where The Magic Happens" and "Couples Retreat".
On top of that, it would've also explained why the events of the OG Ben 10 happened coincidentally during the summer road trip as a sort of crawling out of the woodwork.
Tumblr media
One thing that was to be featured in this series were easter eggs and references to the events of other media that heavily implied a shared universe. For example, in-passing they were to bring up the T-Rex from Isla Sornia Site-B rampaging through San Diego back in the late 90s. Sound familiar?
Another thing is it's still unclear as to whether or not Ben would've appeared in the show as either a cameo or a full on appearance in an episode. So that's still up in the air.
As far as I can tell, a three part pilot was written by McDuffie along with a series bible as he pictured the show running for five seasons but so far nothing has been released. Understandably.
An interesting thing here is there was gonna be a flashback episode that would've been set after the events of "Secret Of The Omnitrix" where Charmcaster kidnaps Gwen from her home for one final confrontation.
Another juicy tidbit would've been a reoccurring villain that ultimately becomes the main antagonist as the show progressed - in this case, it's a pastor who develops dangerously unstable telekinetic powers after surviving a plane crash. McDuffie wanted Clancy Brown to voice him.
Other actors that McDuffie wanted for the show were Michael Jai White, John Lithgow, John Kassir, Geno Segers, Mae Whitman, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Morena Baccarin, Greg Abbey, Powers Boothe and Will Friedle. Cool.
One thing that was to play a major role was a large book that Charmcaster's written during her time in Ledgerdomain that chronicled the history of magic in the world as well as how the numerous alien races play a part in its creation.
Unfortunately here's the last piece of information that is available or I can find on this cancelled spinoff and it's a good one: Dwayne McDuffie wanted to have comic book-inspired title cards for the episode and he was eyeing Tim Jacobus as the artist to design them.
So yeah this would end up being replaced by the still very polarizing Ben 10: Omniverse and top it off, McDuffie passed away.
But it's still interesting nonetheless. Would any of you have loved to have seen this show.
Let me know what you think of all this.

Another reason not to have sons.
Tumblr media
Left Side: Andre Eugene [L] and his mother Donna Hyman [R]. Right Side: A photo of Gigi the poodle on Hyman's Facebook.
By Reduxx Team January 27, 2024
A trans-identified male is in custody following the horrific stabbing death of both his mother and her beloved dog. Andre Eugene, who reportedly identifies as a “woman,” is facing charges of murder in the second degree and aggravated cruelty to animals.
Eugene’s mother, Donna Marie Hyman, was found dead in her Brooklyn apartment on January 19 after police were called by Hyman’s sister. The woman says she had received a call from Hyman, but when she answered could only hear blood-curdling screams.
Content warning: descriptions of how he killed his mother and her mini poodle
Hyman was found “lying lifeless on the floor” and had been stabbed over 50 times in the head and chest. The corpse of Hyman’s mini poodle, Gigi, was found outside of the building, having apparently been stabbed and thrown from the 11th floor.
According to court records, police officers found Eugene “naked and covered in blood” in the building’s lobby. Despite the obvious indications of foul play, Eugene reportedly attempted to claim that Hyman had died by suicide and that Gigi had fallen from the balcony by accident.
Eugene was later treated for stab wounds that were suspected to be self-inflicted, as well as a dog bite.
Eugene worked as a paraprofessional with kindergarten-aged students at the Henry D. Woodworth School in Brooklyn. At the time of this writing, his name still appears on the staff roster for the school.
Tumblr media
From the staff list at Henry D. Woodworth.
Following Eugene’s arrest, there were some discrepancies in the way in which the crime was reported. While most media outlets correctly referred to Eugene as Hyman’s son, information was later released by police which indicated that Eugene identified as a transgender “woman.”
While it is unclear when Eugene began to transition, multiple early photos of him and his mother posted to her Facebook show him with a masculine appearance. Comments under photos featuring Eugene all suggest he was well-liked by friends and family.
Tumblr media
Eugene with family members. Source: Donna Hyman / FACEBOOK.
Though Eugene’s gender identity is not mentioned anywhere on Hyman’s Facebook where she often shared photos of her family and friends, two photos of Gigi, her poodle, were posted that suggest Hyman was in favor of LGBT causes. In one, Gigi is seen with a Gay Pride Month banner. In another, the dog is centered in an Human Rights Campaign photo frame that says “Fighting For Transgender Justice.”
Eugene is currently being held at the Eric M. Tyler Center on Rikers Island, a facility that houses male adults and adolescents. His intake information lists his sex as “male.”
There have been multiple incidents involving trans-identified males murdering their parent or parents in recent years.
In December of 2022, Nikki Secondino, a trans-identified male Instagram influencer, fatally stabbed his father and severely injured his sister while on a violent rampage over a laptop. Secondino gave a chilling confession to police after being arrested, revealing that he had first bludgeoned his father’s head with a hammer and then stabbed him with a knife. He then stabbed his sister when she attempted to intervene.
Months later, a trans-identified male in Virginia Beach was arrested and charged with the murder of his father. As previously reported by Reduxx, Michael Aaron Horwitz, 34, stabbed Dr. Abbey Horwitz to death at his home for reasons which are still unclear. Horwitz is being held at the Virginia Beach Jail awaiting trial.
here's an article written just over a year ago
"The Femicide Census, co-founded by Clarrie O’Callaghan and Karen Ingala Smith, records the death of every woman killed by a man in England and Wales. The number of women killed by sons has shown a steady and alarming rise since 2016, after decades of remaining stable. The number of grandmothers killed by grandsons has also risen. While younger women are more at risk of being killed by a partner or ex-partner, it is women in their 60s and older who are risk from their older sons and grandsons."

NIGHTWISH COMPLETE ORCHESTRAL RECORDINGS FOR NEW ALBUM AT ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS
Tumblr media
Nightwish have checked in via social media with an update on their new album, which is currently in the works.
"It’s a wrap! 1065 takes of orchestras, choirs and special guests recorded at Abbey Road Studios. Our sincerest thanks go to everybody involved, musicians, singers and technicians alike. Your passion and dedication never ceases to amaze us. Very special thanks to Mr. James Shearman for wonderfully filling the massive shoes of our long-time orchestral arranger, Mr. Pip Williams. Onwards!"
Abbey Road Studios in London, England is the most famous recording studio in the world, renowned for its creativity and technological excellence. It is a global icon that for the last 90 years has been the musical home to The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Ella Fitzgerald, Kate Bush, Oasis, Radiohead, Ed Sheeran, Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, and Adele, to name a few.
Back in April, Nightwish announced they will not be touring in support of their next studio album. The follow-up to 2020's Human. :II: Nature. is due for release in 2024.
Says Nightwish: "As the Human :ll: Nature - World Tour is drawing to a close, we feel now is the time to tell you of our plans for the next phase in our journey. After the planned shows for June 2023 we will be “hanging up our spurs” for an indeterminate time, as far as live concert performances go, and won’t be touring the next album.
The reasons for this decision are personal, but, we all agree, vital to the wellbeing and future of the band. Be assured that we still love working together, and this decision has nothing to do with Floor's pregnancy or our other individual projects.
However, an album of 12 new songs will see bright daylight in 2024, as will 3 music videos! The band is positively hyped beyond words over this new upcoming musical adventure."

quarter three book favorites! (qts 1 & 2) once again, in the order in which i read them:
I'm gonna cheat and list three witch books I read in a row because they're all kinda linked in my head: The Change, about three women who gain magic powers after they go through menopause, The Witches of Moonshyne Manor about a coven of witches in their eighties who must protect their home, and The Rules of Magic, a prequel to Practical Magic- though I preferred the even farther reaching Magic Lessons.
The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin is a really hard book to describe haha but it is as great as everyone says it is.
Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson is a really fun, voicey mystery. A complicated family reunion at a ski lodge gets more complicated when people start dying.
Painted Devils by Margaret Owen is the sequel to one of my favorite fairy tale retellings, Little Thieves. I'll admit this one isn't nearly as good as the first, but still pretty great.
Sisters of the Lost Nation by Nick Medina is a mystery novel about an Indigenous teenager who dives into the mystery of the missing women on her reservation after her sister disappears. This is marketed as a horror and I think that's a bit of a mistake- the horror is in the epidemic of missing and murdered indigenous women, and this book is not a fast-paced slasher or thriller. It is great though.
Northranger by Rey Terciero is a graphic novel, and it's a queer, modern retelling of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. So fun! Lots of discussion of horror media and how it both helps and hurts queer people.
Vampires of el Norte by Isabel Canas is a gothic historical romance set in Mexico, as vaqueros attempt to stop the invasion of the United States- and the vampires. Mostly a romance, but so delightful.
Better Living Through Birding by Christian Cooper was a fantastic memoir! Written by the Black man who was birding in Central Park when a white woman called the cops on him, this memoir is primarily about how much Cooper loves birds and what it was like for him to grow up gay, Black, and nerdy. Highly recommend the audiobook, which is read by Cooper and his passion comes through his voice so beautifully.
Carmilla by J Sheridan Le Fanu is a gothic classic that I'd never read, and I really enjoyed it! I love classic vampires.
The September House by Carissa Orlando is a delightful haunted house book about a woman who refuses to leave her haunted victorian manor. It has a turret, after all! She is annoyed when her adult daughter comes to investigate, because she knows that her daughter will just overreact to the bleeding walls. Fun and funny, with a lovely amount of depth about why families hide things from each other.

'Wall of Eyes' Film and Zine Gear Updates
Tumblr media
On January 18, The Smile and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Wall of Eyes film collection was premiered at the Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square, London. The first piece in the collection is a silent film showing the band recording Wall of Eyes at Abbey Road. We initially see the band playing and talking in the live room at Studio 2, but as it progresses we also see them giving direction (and reacting amusingly) to the London Contemporary Orchestra (a slight surprise as Jonny usually record strings at Air Studio’s Lyndhurst hall).
As you might expect, most of the instruments and gear used by the band is similar to what they brought on the road. In an interview with Lauren Laverne for the BBC, Thom mentioned that the songs were mostly written very quickly, some on tour and some in studio. “Especially with Tom [Skinner], he’s super quick… so we could have an idea, and suddenly it's off the ground within like half an hour, and we started getting into this habit of like — take three was like ‘that’s it, move on.’” So it makes sense that the band would use much of the same equipment as on tour, if only to speed up the recording process.
However, there were a couple of surprises in the silent film. One shot showed Jonny with an Eventide H9 pedal floating beside his pedalboard. Previously, only Thom had used the H9, and Thom used it as a vocal effect. Another shot showed Thom playing his black 1963 Fender Jazzmaster. Thom’s old big-box Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail could also be seen beside his pedalboard, though it wasn’t plugged in.
The Wall of Eyes Zine
In addition to watching the film by PTA, attendees could also purchase a “zine” full of photos taken by Sam Petts-Davies during the recording of the new album. The zine is printed on newsprint, reminiscent of Radiohead’s Universal Sigh and The King of Limbs newspapers. The zine mostly shows the same gear seen in Sam's previous photos of the session, and some of the photos were previously shared on social media. But there are still plenty of new details to take in!
Tumblr media
Jonny with Thom/Nigel's worn sunburst Fender Telecaster Standard. You might mistake it for Jonny's Tele Plus given the wear on the "horn" of the guitar, but the pickups and the white binding show that it's the Tele Standard that Thom first played for AMOK touring in 2013 (it was still very worn back then).
In one photo, we can see Thom playing a Martin acoustic, perhaps from the recording of the single Wall of Eyes. Another photo shows a be-speckled Jonny on a couch with Thom/Nigel's worn sunburst Fender Telecaster Standard. But before you assume Jonny has abandoned his Les Paul, he can be seen playing his (plugged in) natural finish Les Paul Standard in the studio's control room in another photo. Jonny is also seen with the Les Paul in photos from the live room at his home studio (the grey-blue painted room from which the Smile have previously shared rehearsal footage and photos).
Tumblr media
This photo by Sam shows Jonny with his natural finish Les Paul Standard in the control room at Abbey Road Studio 2. It's very similar, but not identical, to the photo included in the zine. This photo was posted on the band's twitter on Oct 9, 2023, but it was most likely taken in March 2023, and only posted in October to help publicize the band's fall 2023 tour. If you want to look around the control room, a 360º view is available on 360cities.net, but it appears the room has been renovated slightly since that was taken.
Tumblr media
A wide view of the live room at Abbey Road Studio 2, taken partway up the stairway to the control room. Some particularly notable bits of gear include the Prophet 5 REV4 between Thom and Jonny's stations (presumably for shared access) and the Elektron Analog Rytm (partly blocked by Thom's head) on top of the Rhodes electric piano.
One of the largest photos in the zine, spanning two pages, shows a nearly full view of the live room of Studio 2. On the left, we can see an impressive array of synths resting on top of the grand piano, including Thom's Moog Matriarch and one of Jonny's Oberheim SEM Pro synths. Clearly the band prefer the sound of upright pianos for this project. While the grand is used as a synth table, there are two mic'd uprights just behind Thom's area. Jonny Sequential Prophet 5 REV4 is also visible on a stand between Thom and Jonny's stations, suggesting it's getting a lot of shared use. On tour, Jonny used his Studiologic MIDI pedals to play synth lines on the Prophet, and the synth can be heard layered with strings on the new studio recordings. The MIDI pedals aren't visible in studio photos, so presumably Jonny decided to play those parts by hand for the studio recordings.
Thom is seem sitting at the Rhodes piano, playing a guitar or bass. On too of the Rhodes he has a sheet of (presumably) lyrics, and also his Elektron Octatrack (which Thom previously used on the album recordings for ANIMA) Elektron Analog Rytm drum machine (which he used heavily on Tomorrow's Modern Boxes and (at least on tour for) Anima). Behind him, his phone is visible resting on top of his favorite amp for the past seventeen-ish years: a fawn JMI Vox AC30/6 from 1962 (the pre-Top Boost version).
Tom Skinner is seen playing in one of the two isolation booths for drums. Another isolation booth is set up in Jonny's section, but instead of Jonny it's Robert Stillman recording in it (at least, one can only assume Stillman based on the saxophone horn visible through the booth's window). Jonny himself appears to be sitting hunched over near the couch and coffee table — it's unclear if he's playing an instrument, or perhaps manipulating a Max patch on his laptop.
Stillman is visible recording saxophone and clarinet in other photos from Studio 2 as well. He's credited for clarinet on Read the Room, and for clarinet and saxophone on Friend of a Friend, Pete Wareham, who previously played with Skinner's past band Sons Of Kemet, is seen recording flute in another photo from Studio 2. Wareham is credited for flute on Teleharmonic and Read The Room.
Tumblr media
This photo of Tom Skinner in Studio 2, previously posted on the Smile's twitter page, was also included in the zine. It appears to have been taken during setup: the isolation booth isn't fully set up yet, and a ladder can be seen on the right.
Tumblr media
Another photo (above) shows Thom's guitar and bass pedalboard. The first row of pedals (closest to him) are all favorites from the past few Smile tours (check his pedalboards page for more info). On the second row, EarthQuaker Devices Sunn O))) Life pedal has been squeezed between his EQD Afterneath and his Telenordia Kompressor. There's also an array of (unconnected) overdrive and fuzz pedals resting on the riser at the top of his board (we saw many of the same pedals arrayed there in a previous photo from the session).
In that photo, we also see Thom playing his modified 1960s Gibson EB0 bass guitar through an Ampeg B-15 Portaflex combo amplifier. The EB0's original single coil pickup is replaced by a Kent Armstrong Tele Dual Rail pickup (thanks to Makoto for pointing this out) on a custom plate, presumably a mod by a previous owner. Jonny is a big fan of the Ampeg Portaflex, having used a 2000s Portaflex B15R for sessions with Radiohead and Shye Ben Tzur, and also for the Smile’s debut live stream from the 2021 Glastonbury festival. The original 1960s Ampeg Portaflex was favored as a recording amp by American bassists like James Jamerson and Donald “Duck” Dunn — both notable influences on Jonny’s brother Colin.
It's interesting to note that none of Jonny's ondes Martenot are visible in the photos from Abbey Road. On tour, it's understandable that Jonny doesn't play the monophonic Ondes, because he almost always needs to play many notes at a time to fill out the rhythm section on the Smile's songs. But the the bridge/coda of the Wall of Eyes single prominently features Ondes Martenot (though it's often layered with strings). Perhaps Jonny overdubbed those parts at his home studio, or at another studio during mixing.
Tumblr media
This photo of Thom in the control room of an unknown studio was posted on the band's twitter account on August 30, 2023 (photo by @sampettsdavies). It's definitely not from the control room in Abbey Road Studio 2. Perhaps it's the mysterious "StudioFour" in London, which is listed as the mixing location in the album's liner notes.
Tumblr media
This photo of Jonny on stage during a soundcheck with The Smile is also included in the zine. It was posted on the band's twitter account on Sep 5, 2023 (photo by @sampettsdavies). It, like the photo set posted 4 days earlier, is probably from the band's July 2023 tour.

Something I don't see a lot in the arguments in favour of piracy is that: for a lot of foreign fans/viewers, piracy is our only option of accessing certain media. You know that awesome feeling when you meet online friends from far corners of the globe who have some how watched the same show as you? Yea, chances are they pirated that.
I remember when Glee was on air, and piracy was the only way I could get to watch the show at little cost (as Americans would, since it was free on TV) and within a reasonable time frame. I could theoretically wait till the DVD is out and my local HMV stocks it, but that would (a) cost lots of money that high school me didn't have, and (b) I would have to wait ages. I could also theoretically wait for my local channel to buy the rights to the show, but that would usually be at least a year late, and that is if the local channel buys the rights at all. (Plus, I was living at home at the time. watching it on local broadcast would mean convincing my parents to not watch what they wanted to watch and let me hoard the TV for an hour).
When I was getting into BBC Sherlock and Downton Abbey, I had friends studying in England and they very kindly helped me get the DVDs for the shows for cheap. It was great! However, DVDs are also regionally locked; after changing the region on my old laptop's built-in DVD player several times, I was locked out and there was a bunch of DVDs I could no longer play (until mum's friend bought me an external disc reader, but if I were to get that myself, that's another expenditure).
Even after I got into Marvel, I could not easily access the films and shows. Disney+ was first launced in the US in 2019; but my city—a fairly prominent city—didn't get the platform until late 2021. Before then, there were few ways for me to legally access anything within the Disney family. For a while, Marvel films and shows were on Netflix, but more often than not I was geolocked out of it. I could access them with a VPN, but VPNs are expensive and it's not always easy to find a reliable one.
In short, piracy is sometimes the only way someone from outside of where a show is created can get access to it. There was a time when shows and films revelled in being able to claim international fame, but anti-piracy movements and geolocking have made that difficult. I think there is definitely some value to media piracy if it allows people from all around the world to get access to media from other cultures.

It took Harry guts and bravery to come to the Coronation
He cut a lonely figure on Saturday, but we must salute the Duke of Sussex for smiling in the face of adversity
BRYONY GORDON
7 May 2023 • 3:52pm
Tumblr media
Britain's Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex

It takes strength to walk through Westminster Abbey balancing a five-pound crown made of solid gold on your head – but it takes a particularly special kind of fortitude to make that journey in just a simple black morning suit, knowing that most of the 2,000-strong congregation are watching your every move and waiting to see you stumble.
All eyes were on the Duke of Sussex as he arrived for his father’s Coronation, but if the 38-year-old was feeling the pressure, he was damned if he was going to show it. As he made his way into the Abbey, only the medals on his collar hinting at his decade of service in the armed forces, Prince Harry made a point of grinning and nodding at various members of the congregation as if he hadn’t a care in the world, or a recently released memoir under his belt. A chance visitor from outer space would have glanced at proceedings and had no idea of the months of fevered speculation about his attendance.
Tumblr media

Body language experts and lip-readers were drafted in, en masse, to try to reveal something scandalous from Harry’s briefest of visits to the UK. Perhaps mindful of this, Buckingham Palace had seated him slap bang behind his aunt, the Princess Royal, who was wearing a giant hat complete with exotic red feather, the plumage of which blocked almost all view of his face.
Tumblr media
Buckingham Palace had seated Harry slap bang behind his aunt and her striking hat
There was another impediment to staring at the Duke, given that he had been placed three rows back, next to Jack Brooksbank, the husband of Princess Eugenie, and Princess Alexandra, a cousin of Elizabeth II who hasn’t had a royal engagement in more than a decade. “He isn’t a working member of the royal family,” came the refrain, again and again, from officials at Buckingham Palace, as they explained this punitive seating plan.
A working royal he may not be, but Prince Harry will always be the King’s youngest son, his ‘darling boy’. It seemed petty, then, to welcome the Duke as if he were a distant relative, especially when you consider his crime: standing up for his wife when he felt nobody else would.
Much has been made of the Duchess of Sussex’s decision to stay at home in Montecito, with one tabloid recently running a front-page splash shaming her for doing so. The narrative of the lone Duke has not been helped by images of him walking solo down the nave of the abbey, flanked by his cousins and their husbands. But the truth is that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s marriage is as strong as ever, with Harry determined to do everything in his power to protect the mother of his children from the dreadful pain she felt back in 2019, when she said that endless negative press attention left her feeling suicidal.

Sadly, the media narrative has changed little since then, with recent headlines suggesting that the Duchess’s current quietness is because she is busy behind the scenes trying to launch her own brand. The truth is a little less exciting than that: the only thing that Meghan is trying to do right now is protect her mental health, by keeping a low profile.
Is it any surprise, then, that the Duchess chose not to throw herself into the lion’s den of the Coronation? That, on the day of her son’s fourth birthday, she felt a better use of her time would be to stay in the safe haven of her California home, where she could concentrate fully on Archie and Lilibet, and the lovely life they have created away from prying eyes? And yet despite her physical absence, Prince Harry went into Westminster Abbey with the full support of his wife behind him.
He managed that well, in trying circumstances that few of us would fancy being tested under. Broad smiles and impassive faces were the order of the day – Prince Harry has, after all, had a lifetime of coaching on how to appear as if all is well in public. And yet it must have been bittersweet for the Duke to be apart from his first-born child on his birthday, while watching his nephew, Prince George act as page boy alongside the new Queen’s grandchildren, Gus and Louis Lopes and Freddy Parker Bowles, and her great-nephew, Arthur Elliott. Spare indeed.
As ever, Beatrice and Eugenie were there to support their beloved cousin. There had been talk of Prince Harry perhaps making the family lunch, an invitation extended by the King as an apparent “olive branch”. But that peace offering was surely only ever about optics, with the team at Buckingham Palace knowing full well the Duke’s priority was getting back to the US to see his son so he could wish him a happy birthday in person.
And so by the time that the new King and Queen stepped on to the Buckingham Palace balcony to watch the fly-past, Harry was already on his way to Heathrow, to catch a plane back to California. There, he could carry out his most important duty of the day: that of a dad tucking his son into bed, on the joyous occasion of his fourth birthday.

Some ghoul housing thoughts, because why not? What's their set up like? Below the cut.
-When the ghouls are staying in the dorms, their rooms are arranged to be fairly generic; They have a small table and a chair or two for sitting at, a desk with a chair, a closet and a bed.
All the rooms have their own attached bathroom, but it's nothing fancy, just a pedestal sink, toilet, and a shower wedged into the corner, but it's better than having to go upstairs if one is not feeling well.
Everything is cheap, but not so cheap that it breaks right away, mostly so that it doesn't cost the ministry an arm and a leg to replace it.
Most of the ghouls personalize their spaces in some way to make it feel like home -especially those who live there year round- or leave it pretty bland since they have other accommodations elsewhere.
-Surprisingly, not all of the ghouls stick around post tour; They might for a little while to rest before heading off, but some of them have houses or apartments elsewhere where they live when they're not preparing for tours or attending rehearsals.
Cumulus, for example, has an apartment somewhere where she spends the off season, and Cirrus has a house, so they usually stay a week post tour and then travel home.
-Out of the ghouls that stay at the abbey year round, Dew's room looks the most like it belongs to someone.
He's put up shelving, hung photos and posters... and smashed a huge hole in the wall that connects to Mountain's room that they've covered up with a tasteful beaded curtain, so, really, Dew's room is also Mountain's room now and vice versa.
-Speaking of Mountain's room though, he's still working with the standard set up... give or take a hundred potted plants, which are slowly encroaching on Dew's side.
-Rain has part of his room decorated all nice and neat for taking pictures and such for social media, but the rest is a pigsty.
He has one of those plush hammocks in the corner of his room, and he throws his stuffed sea creature dolls in there while laying on his mattress... which is on the floor.
-Sunny's room is half decorated, mostly because she didn't have a lot of time to put anything on the walls before she transferred to a new position in the ministry, but no one has touched her room or changed it since she could still come home sometime.
Aether's room is similarly stuck in a sort of stasis, but that's because he usually winds up sleeping in the infirmary after he's done his work for the day.
His bed is getting covered in a layer of dust.
-Aeon has his own place to stay outside of the abbey, but he's slowly moving more of his things there and getting himself more comfortable.
Whereas Aurora said "Fuck it." and turned her room into an absolute princess paradise complete with a canopy bed.
It takes up most of the room, but she loves it.
And lastly;
-Swiss has glow in the dark stars on his ceiling, because, while he doesn't sleep there, even when he's staying at the abbey himself, he does like to go there and lay down in the floor and have some alone time.
He deliberately makes it as calm and chill as possible.

How Grace Kelly became an unlikely icon of Irish-American assimilation
The ascension of a Catholic Irish-American to princess paved the way for the Irish to be accepted as American ‘royalty’
1 Apr 2023, The Irish Times
A statue of Grace Kelly, the Hollywood actor who became a princess, was unveiled in Mayo recently near Drimurla, where her grandfather’s cottage still stands. This came a month after Trinity College Dublin added a bust of Abbey Theatre co-founder Lady Gregory to its Old Library. Although public women of Irish connection are finally being included in official memory and memorial, Grace Kelly’s significance to Ireland and Irish America generally remains neglected.
Kelly, awarded an Oscar for The Country Girl (1954), appeared in 11 films between 1951 and 1956. She received the title of Princess Grace of Monaco upon her marriage to Prince Rainier III of Monaco in April 1956. Grace was a cultivated woman whose deep and often publicly shared interest in Ireland and its culture led her widower to endow the Princess Grace Irish Library of Monaco in her honour. In her public life, she ably represented both her heritage and her adopted principality: Grace formally lunched with the Kennedys in May 1961, a month before making an impactful state visit to Ireland during which she called at the ancestral Kelly cottage in Drimurla.

John Henry Kelly, born in Drimurla in the Famine year of 1847, left for Pennsylvania 20 years later. Grace was the granddaughter of John Henry and the daughter of the handsome and athletic John B Kelly, who earned his fortune during America’s 1920s building boom. Grace was raised in a large home in a residential Philadelphia neighbourhood on the Schuylkill river banks. This waterway divided the Irish “new money” from the “society” Anglo-Protestant elite on the western bank along the so-called Main Line. The Kelly home was a fine one, as I saw with my own eyes when I delivered a talk there in December. However, to “old money” Wasp Philadelphia, the fact that it had been newly built in the late 1920s with bricks from the family’s own firm was unpalatable. Altogether, in the highly socially and racially stratified city in which Grace was born, wealth and success were not enough for those of recent immigrant background to be fully accepted into its uppermost echelon.
In order to dilute the usual associations of an Irish Catholic background, movie studios created a slightly icy but elegant persona for Kelly when she was on the rise in the early 1950s. Nevertheless, the assumption that a Philadelphia Irish Catholic girl could not quite make the cut coloured coverage: in 1955, Time magazine suggested that although publicists tagged “Miss Kelly as ‘a Main Line debutante,’” she was “neither Main Line nor a debutante, but she is the next thing to both.”
Such subtly snooty comments melted away when Kelly’s engagement to Rainier was announced in January 1956.
Their wedding in Monaco cathedral three months later was one of the largest international media events of the 1950s. It was broadcast live on television by MGM, watched by 30 million people. It is not remarked upon today, but this unambiguously Catholic spectacular came only three years after the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, also a momentous televisual event. For some of those of Irish nationalist persuasion in Ireland and the US, Kelly’s globally visible transformation to royalty was an Irish Catholic riposte to the crowning of the new British monarch at Westminster Abbey in 1953.

The ascension of a Catholic Irish-American to the status of princess paved the way for the Irish to ascend to “American royalty”, so to speak: the first Catholic Irish president was elected only four years later. The Kennedy era tends to be the beginning point in assessments of the final full assimilation of the Irish in America, but it was Kelly who initiated the transformation.
The princess’s gorgeous white bridal gown also inspired women in her ancestral country. Caitriona Clear has noted that into the early 1950s, the wedding outfit of most Irish women was a formal day dress or suit and that the white dress and veil was worn mostly by brides from elite backgrounds. It seems that the widely disseminated image of the white bridal gown of a woman of modest Irish roots made such attire approachable for ordinary women in Ireland: by 1957 the colour of wedding dresses was so taken for granted that it went unmentioned in Irish newspaper accounts. Kelly’s donation of the gown to the renowned Philadelphia Museum of Art for its permanent collection soon after her wedding suggests the sudden confidence of the Catholic Irish in a city that had long socially excluded them.
In her role as princess, Kelly wielded immense soft power as the internationally known representative of a tiny principality long overshadowed by its powerful neighbour, France. Biographer Donald Spoto suggests that the global spotlight brought by Kelly transformed Monaco: it disarmed French attempts to assert control over the principality, revitalised its economy and, through the princess’s efforts, made it a hub for cultural events. Even Kelly’s final film, after a long hiatus, Rearranged (1982), a comedy short in which she plays herself, was a disguised promotion for her beloved Monaco Flower Show. Poignantly, Rearranged remains unreleased as it was unfinished at the time of the princess’s death in a car accident in 1982.

Kelly had purchased the ancestral Drimurla cottage and the surrounding small-holding in 1976, suggesting a deep reservoir of family feeling. If the princess always remembered Drimurla, then Drimurla returned the favour: residents sent a wreath of wildflowers picked in the fields around the ancestral Kelly home to Monaco for her funeral.
