Of Mice & Men - Echo Metalcore is a genre that’s been divisive ever since it appeared more than 20 years ago, and it didn’t reach its peak until the late 00s and early 2010s when a lot of the “crabcore,” “Risecore,” and scene bands came to prominence. Bands like Attack Attack, Memphis May Fire, Pierce The Veil, Blessthefall, and Of Mice & Men dominated the scene, and people had differing feelings about these bands, but it’s been a decade or so since these bands were huge, and I’ve noticed that they tend to age in two ways -- like fine wine or spoiled milk. It just depends on what band it is, and where their career went after their initial popularity. Attack Attack, for a good example, lost some key members, and those members formed other bands, the most popular of those being Beartooth, formed by guitarist and vocalist Caleb Shomo, and they’ve had a great career over the last decade. Another scene staple, Memphis May Fire, haven’t; they’ve been just been pumping out the same metalcore records with some hard-rock ideas and sounds thrown in to appeal to the general rock fandom, but they aren’t the big names that they once were. One of the most interesting bands of the time, and the subject of today’s review, was Of Mice & Men, who were formed out of vocalist Austin Carlile being kicked out of Attack Attack after their debut album, 2008′s Someday Came Suddenly. Carlile had a good career with the band, but due to creative differences and health issues, he left before the writing and recording of 2018′s Defy. Former Jamie’s Elsewhere vocalist and guitarist Aaron Pauley came into the band a couple of years before, and Defy was his first album as the sole vocalist of the band. Their sound has gone through a few interesting choices, especially getting ahead of the nu-metalcore train that started in the early 2010s, where bands were becoming more and more influenced by Korn and Linkin Park. They’ve abandoned that sound for a more traditional metalcore sound that was found on the first two albums, especially on 2019′s Earth&Sky, and their newest album, 2021′s Echo. I totally forgot about the latter album, but I enjoyed the former album a lot when it came out a few years ago. They ditched that nu-metal and hard-rock sound for a more melodic metalcore sound and it was great. The band signed to SharpTone prior to the release of this one, but they dropped this album as three EPs throughout the last year and a half, which is really weird, but I waited until the whole album came out to listen to it. I’ve been in the mood to listen to older bands’ new albums, since the new albums from Miss May I and The Devil Wears Prada came out, so when I saw that Of Mice & Men had their new album, I totally forgot about it. I never listened to it when it came out, so I’ve been spending the last few days with it, and I don’t know how to feel about it for better or worse. This is a very strange album, but it’s not because it’s comprised of three EPs. I think it’s because this album seems like a lazy retread of things they’ve done before, but there are some really good things here at the same time, so it’s a bit of a confusing listen for me. I like certain tracks on it, and I’m invested in the album, but I’m taken out of the experience on other songs. This is a pretty simple metalcore album, but your mileage on it will depend on how you feel about the genre, as well as how you feel about this band, whether it’s their early material or later work. I have to give credit to a few things here, mainly Aaron Pauley. He’s not the greatest vocalist out there, especially in the metalcore scene, but he’s got some pipes, at least when it comes to his clean vocals. His screams aren’t anything to write home about, but they’re done well enough that I can enjoy them. The hooks are where they shine, but this album oddly feels devoid of memorable ones. It has some, and the ones that stick out are really good, such as “Fighting Gravity,” “Levee,” and “Bloom,” but some other songs just aren’t memorable enough. Pauley’s vocals are good throughout this record, especially his cleans, but the hooks aren’t extremely strong on a lot of songs. The same goes for the instrumentation, too; a lot of this album just feels flat and lifeless, especially for a metalcore album. It just feels like a lifeless retread, like I said earlier, and I don’t know how to feel about it. Everything on this album is good, don’t get me wrong, but it’s nothing special, either. It’s got some fleeting moments here and there, especially in terms of breakdowns and vocals, but nothing really great, either. The lyrics aren’t half bad, either, but pretty standard for a metalcore album, nonetheless. I just didn’t get as much out of it as I was hoping for, but it’s not all bad. I didn’t dislike this album at all, but it’s not quite as good as their last album, unfortunately. Aaron Pauley is a solid vocalist, and the instrumentation is well-done, but it was nothing extremely noteworthy, either. I’d still recommend this if you want to see what this band is up to, especially if you haven’t listened to them in awhile, because they’ve ditched the butt-rock sound that they had on some of their middle albums, and they’re back to being a straight up metalcore band, but it’s with mixed results.

Aaron Pauley (OM&M)
Tumblr media
'Hey guys, where's Alan?' you ask, entering the studio where the band were messing around.
Aaron looks up from his phone as you sit yourself down on his lap and he smiles, 'hey beautiful, replacing me with the ginger princess?'
'Oh Aaron no one will ever replace you silly,' you laugh and slap his chest.
Aaron shakes his head and goes back to his phone, while you lean your head on his shoulder. The two of you had been super close since alan introduced you to the band six years ago.
'He told me he's working on a song y/n,' Tino pipes up from across the room.
You furrow your eyebrows, 'I thought the album was finished.'
'It is, but Alan wanted to get something off his chest,' Phil says, from the chair next to the sofa you and Aaron occupied.
You start to play with Aaron's hair, 'do you think it's about a girl he likes? he has been spending a lot of time at that coffee shop.'
Aaron pats your knee, 'this could be good for him to get his feelings out in the open.'
Did it annoy you slightly that alan might get a girlfriend before you got a boyfriend, yes it did but it wasn't like you hadn't tried over the years. Aaron had become your person and you his, you had no boundaries and everything was on the table. After every bad date, you called one another and moaned about how the date couldn't be like either of you. No wonder Alan always joked that the two of you were perfect for one another, maybe he was jealous and needed you to give him more attention.
'Hey guys, I have something to say,' Alan calls out, entering the studio holding an acoustic guitar.
'No judgement from any of us, speak your mind,' Aaron says, putting his phone down and carefully readjusting you on his lap.
Alan rolls his eyes and sits down, 'I wrote a song about a boy and a girl who are perfect for one another, everyone wants them to be together but they are blind to their feelings towards one another--'
'If this girl can't see how perfect you are Alan I'm sure you'll find someone else, right Aaron,' you say, cutting off Alan.
Alan stares at you stunned, 'this song isn't about me and the girl from the coffee shop y/n, it's about you and Aaron.'
'What about me and y/n?' Aaron asks.
Tino sighs loudly, 'y/n, describe your perfect guy.'
You point at Aaron and smile, 'Aaron.'
'And Aaron now you describe your perfect girl,' Phil speaks up.
Was this a bit between the three of them or something?
Aaron pats your leg, 'easy, it's y/n.'
'So why aren't you two together? Everyone already thinks you are with how touchy-feely you are around one another,' Alan says calmly.
You and Aaron lock eyes, and after a few seconds it hits both of you and your eyes widen in sync, 'do you like me like me?' you both question in unison.
'Creepy,' Alan and Tino say together.
'Kind of cute,' Phil joins in.
Everything clicked into place, you couldn't be happy with anyone else because you always ended up comparing them to Aaron, the two of you really were clueless.
You blush, 'do you think we should give us a shot Aaron?'
He nods, 'I think we should y/n, we know everything about one another, this could be perfect.'
Before you can stop yourself, you find yourself kissing Aaron on the lips and it felt right, while around you Alan, Tino and Phil gagged.
'My eyes...my precious eyes...' Alan says overdramatically.
You pull back from the kiss and Aaron smirks, 'my turn,' and he goes in for round two.
'Our eyes...our precious eyes...' Phil and Tino moan.
And that's how you and Aaron started dating. the rest of the guys made up a no kissing in front of them rule, but you and Aaron liked watching them squirm and reminding them that they made this happen.

LOVE how Attack Attack! has a song about pledging devotion to an idealized image of someone out of obsessive infatuation and it falling through because of they were too caught up in their fantasy version to see the real person and said person realizing this and asking, "This is who I truly am and I will stay genuine to myself, are you loyal to that person or just the fantasy you made of them?"
AND WHAT DO THEY FUCKING NAME IT? Sexual Man Chocolate. THANKS AA!
this post was inspired by seeing this and losing it because this applies to both the vocals and the guitar [those bends man. love bends but they're also a great example of, "The guitar is an incredible instrument capable of making some real goofy noises."]

Of Mice & Men - Tether
Metalcore band Of Mice & Men has gone through a lot of things over their 13 years as a band. I swear they’ve been around longer, but their debut came out in 2010. They’ve been in their current incarnation since 2018, when original vocalist Austin Carlile left the band, and the band’s bassist, Aaron Pauley, stepped up to be the lead vocalist as well. It kind of worked out, because at that time, they were going through a sound shift; from 2014 to 2018, they were one of the first bands to incorporate more nu-metal into their sound and they were open about being influenced by bands like Korn, Papa Roach, Deftones, and Linkin Park. 2018’s Defy, which was Pauley’s first album as lead vocalist, culminated in being one of their worst albums (2016’s Cold World was bad, too), but they’ve been on the upswing since then. 2019’s Earthandsky was a lot better, as it was a metalcore album that went back to their roots but added a progressive element to it. It was very unexpected, but also very good.
Before their new album, Tether, we got Echo in 2021, but what’s interesting about that is that album was released in four EPs. I ended up listening to the album as a whole last year, and I thought it was fine. It took some time to grow on me, as it was more akin to a generic metalcore album, and I ended up enjoying it with more listens. A few songs came out from Tether, but I waited until the whole album came out, too, and I forgot it came out this week. The 13th is when a lot of stuff comes out, so I thought it came out next week, so it was a nice surprise to see it in the new release section this week. Despite not knowing what to expect, I felt as though that if it was like Echo, it would be pretty good, and sure enough, Tether is a solid album. Just like with Echo, it did take a few listens for me to get into it.
If you’re going into this expecting a brutal metalcore album, you’ll be disappointed. This record leans more into their melodic side, but not without having some heavier moments thrown into the mix. I do appreciate that every song isn’t a clone of each other, because it makes the heavier moments that pop up feel earned and worth it. Some songs are a bit slower, and lean more into hard-rock, whereas some are more energetic metalcore bangers, and that’s all across a 38-minute album. Of Mice & Men has never been great at melody, per se, especially when they helped to create the “generic clean chorus guy” trope in metalcore, but they’re not bad, either. Aaron Pauley is a good singer, and he can make a hook work, but I will admit that a lot of the books on this record are just passable at best.
A few of them are pretty good, but this album isn’t quite as good as their last couple of albums. I appreciate the diversity, as each song isn’t just a metalcore banger with a main riff, clean chorus, a breakdown in the bridge, and that’s that. That is something to appreciate, but the hooks aren’t extremely strong, and I actually get psyched when the metalcore songs show up, because there is a pulse to them, versus a rather mid-tempo hard-rock song. They’re not had at all, and they’re actually solid for what they are, but if you prefer their metalcore stuff, you won’t care for this as much. I’m sort of torn, because as much as I like the diversity and the more melodic angle, the hooks aren’t very strong, despite the performances being good. This is a mixed bag, but it works more than it really doesn’t, and if you like that kind of metalcore with a more hard-rock lean to it, such as Wage War or Beartooth, you’ll like this record. It’s got just enough heaviness to stand out a bit, but it’s got a lot of accessibility as well.
