Neil playing striker meaning his job on the court is to prevent the ball from getting towards Andrew in the first place.

Neil who tried to prevent Prost from happening to Andrew by going to the Nest, trying to keep anything bad far away from Andrew. But instead at the Nest he’s forced to play backliner, representing that hes attempt to keep Prost from happening to Andrew failed, the ball metaphorically landing in the net.

Nicky and Aaron who play backliners, the last line of defense to try and keep the ball from getting at Andrew. Coming in later than Neil’s position as a striker, relying on Neil first to keep the ball far away, but stepping into their roles as protectors when it strikes too close.

Backliners being the players to get most aggressive, fighting with other players to protect the goalie.

Aaron being the one who brings the racket down on Drake.

Neil is there first, at the metaphorical ball, but it slipped past him, and Aaron is the one whose there to scoop it up and ricochet it back towards the other end of the court.

Hotch is one of my favorite characters because whenever there’s an episode with misogynists, homophobes, racists, or any other bigots he looks like he is exercising ALL of his willpower to not pummel them into the ground. He is five seconds away from committing police brutality and I love it. If he wasn’t so well trained in bureaucracy I guarantee you Hotch would’ve killed more people than most of the UnSubs combined

Neil gets in a fight on the court and it’s one of those where gloves are dropped and helmets are thrown and the punches are quick and hard. Neil gets far more good hits in than the other guy but he doesn’t escape unharmed. His nose is gushing and his mouth is full of blood when one of the foxes finally pulls him off. There’s blood in his teeth, lips tight in a grin far from his father’s but his own brand of deadly, and his eyes stay locked on his mark. Neil says something back, spits blood across the court and he’s not fighting against the hold Matt and Kevin have on him, but he’s leaning into it like he might break free any second. Cocky.

You would think Andrew would already be there, ready to help keep Neil back or throw his own punches but no. No, Andrew is silently losing his mind over how fucking hot Neil Josten is. Everyone’s so confused about why he hasn’t at least come closer but he literally can’t move. He’s so fucking gone for Neil Josten. It takes him a full twenty minutes to get it together, Neil’s not even on the court anymore, he was banished to the locker room by coach for being a disappointment or something, and Andrew still can’t focus. He lets two goals in before Kevin successfully ruins his high and he gets back into the game, but the image of Neil's stupid bloody grin is seared into his brain to the point he can’t even look at Neil until they are safely back in their dorm room. Neil finds it hilarious, Andrew can’t even lie about how hot it was.

Katelyns (idk if the spelling is correct) family adores Aaron and thinks of him as their own

Riko and Jean hooked up, not bc they liked each other but as a power move from Riko

Jean refuses to speak Japanese after joining the trojans

Allison, Renee and Dan get manicures together every month (Neil tags along often)

Bee made a cringe motivational poster to make Andrew quit smoking, he hated it (started smoking way less)

Andrew and Renee have a knitting/crocheting club together

Jeremy uses a cherry flavoured chapstick

Don't get me wrong, there's never a point in aftg where Aaron and Neil are close personal friends, but I think that the slow escalation of their hostility towards each other actually offers an important insight into who they are as characters. I think it makes so much sense that Aaron and Neil dislike each other more as they learn more about each other, because the two of them are mirrors in a lot of ways.

There is, of course, the Andrew of it all, which is sort of at the center of everything and what gets the most focus: it's how Aaron looks at Neil and hates him for holding Andrew's attention in a way Aaron feels like he's never been able to, and it's how Neil sees Andrew's unyielding commitment to Aaron and how him being Andrew's brother gives him the sort of belonging Neil desperately wants.

But I think their similarities only fuel the negative feelings that arise because of those things—they both had complicated relationships with their mothers, and continue to be affected by the memory of them. They both have a goal for their lives and work toward it with an intense focus. Neither of them feels the need to hold back from shit-talking people (Aaron just doesn't care enough to do it as often). Neither of them is willing to talk to Betsy about their trauma (a fact which probably makes Aaron even angrier about Neil's plan being to get the twins in therapy together, because this fact paired with Andrew's relationship with & comfort around Betsy makes these sessions an uneven playing field).

And so, while tensions are already building for other mafia- and Andrew-related reasons, these things, little similarities between the two of them that are mostly tied to bad memories, are adding fuel to that fire, giving them more reasons to dislike each other.
