This is the OC fairy đŒđ§ââïž When you get this in your ask box, please tell us three facts or trivia about one of your OCs, then pass it on to someone else đ©· Let's learn about each other's OCs! đđ
gimme sixty nine Salem facts stat
KJDHSFGLKJS you think I won't? :FIGHT: Watch.
---
1: His middle name is Layne. Call him this (ONLY allowed for those he's close with) and watch him bluescreen because it always catches him off guard.
2: Spaghetti is his favorite pasta, and probably one of his favorite meals.
3: His natural eye color is green. (originally blue when I first created him)
4: His coven is his family, they're a multi-generational coven. He and his cousins are the current "decision makers" in important coven matters and upholding coven traditions. He didn't care for the responsibility at first and often avoided it, but comes around eventually when he's a bit older with his own family.
5: Out of all his cousins, he's closer to Darcy since they spent the most time together when they were young. They're around the same age and might even live within traveling distance of one another.
6: Around his family, such as his coven and his dads, Salem goes by his first name Isiah. It's uncommon for him to be called by his stage name, unless they're just busting his balls (i.e his cousin Silas, Avis and Noah--all three siblings of one another and coincidentally also the three troublemakers)
7: He has his raven calls recorded into his throat cyberware, which allows him to do his raven croaks when he's not shifted.
8: Salem doesnât like Judah very much due to completely different lifestyles and clashing personalitiesâbut also because heâs a Leo.
9: Heâs not much of a green thumb, nothing really grows when he plants it. Bastien teases him that he inherited his black thumb.
10: Heâs very used to hot weather due to having lived in both the Republic of Texas and now, Night City/California, but doesnât mean he likes it. He prefers colder weatherâŠbut canât tolerate it much. He gets cold very easily!
11: One of his guilty pleasures is trashy reality TV like the Jersey Shore, as well as smutty supernatural romance novels.
12: Firm believer in ghosts, never has seen one before. But he really wants to and has ghost hunted before and would again.
13: Urban exploring is a hobby heâs had since he was a teen. He after spent his summers exploring abandoned locations with friends. Now as an adult, he enjoys exploring with his best friend, boyfriend, and their mutual friends.
14: He normally doesnât wear much clothes around the house. If you drop in, he will answer in his underwear. And heâs not shy at all.
15: Salem is a fan of animation, and has spent plenty of nights just binge watching animated moviesâincluding anime.
16: His magic is a blend of shadow, chaos and hedge magic. Heâs very interested in astral work and often lets himself explore the other side of the veil.
17: His astral form is also a raven, though instead of flesh and blood like his usual shifted form, this one is spectral. At times, it can appear as a white wisp. Other times, his raven manifests as a deep purple form of cosmic matter.
18: Whenever he performs in Las Vegas, he stays a few more days after to partake in typical Vegas hedonism. He usually doesnât remember much of it when he emerges back to civilization.
19: Sometimes he streams his music making process to his fanbase, other times he'll stream the "behind the scenes" moments of his music videos and other performances.
20: So far, he has the following implants: AudioVox w/ Voice Synthesizer, Cyberaudio Implants, custom Kiroshi Optics, full cyberarm (left) with retractable Scratchers, and Biotechnica Neo Lungs
21: Because of his animal association being a raven and their friendship with wolves out in nature, he tends to get along pretty well with werewolves. He can even understand them when they're shifted and can communicate with them non-verbally.
22: He prefers iced coffee over hot coffee, and iced tea over hot tea. Icy drinks > hot drinks.
23: His big weakness is ice cream. Boy loves his ice cream cones.
24: He has his fathers' names tattooed on either side of his neck.
25: Salem has known Amirah and Alec aka Tyrant since his Houston days. He's still good friends with Amirah, but is estranged from Alec.
26: He's half-demon on Bastien's side, though his witch genes are much more dominant than his demonic ones.
27: Salemâs a big stoner, from his teens up to his current adult years. He almost always carries a joint or two with him in case he wants to invite someone to smoke with him.
28: He was 18 the first time he killed someone. It was almost like a cruel rite of passage into adulthood. Amirah and Alec might have been present.
29: Heâs no stranger to rap beef. Salem has released a few tracks dissing his rivals and there are a few about him out there too. One of his current storylines is an ongoing feud between himself and another rapper.
30: Salem doesnât know much about Bastienâs side of the story. Neither of his fathers like to talk about it much. So he learned to stop asking, but he still canât help but be a bit curious.
31: Heâs comfortable with heights and likes to climb up to high perches to just chill. He also takes flight when shifted and heads up to rooftops when he wants some quiet time.
32: Salem is a deep sleeper. Once heâs knocked out cold, itâs pretty hard to wake him up.
33: His favorite movie is Beetlejuice. It never gets old to him.
34: Heâs an âan eye for an eyeâ type of guyâas the Hales often practice. If you slight him, heâll return the favor. The severity depends on how bad you pissed him off.
35: As a romantic partner, heâs very intense. Heâs possessive and obsessive, and he wants his partner to match his freak. His soulmate is someone thatâs as obsessive about him as he is over them.
36: His associated stone is smoky quartz. But heâs also very fond of amethyst and labradorite.
37: Salem values handmade gifts over expensive gifts.
38: 2am burger runs are his favorite nighttime activity. Bonus if heâs hanging out with someone and they go with him.
39: Like the rest of his family and coven, he enjoys collecting oddities and morbid little curios.
40: He gives his friends free merch whenever he drops a new product.
41: He also produces phonk music under the moniker MVGE. This is mostly a side project he does for fun.
42: Salem tends to allow himself to be a bit more chatty and friendly towards those that give off good vibes. Heâs standoffish with those that have a âpresenceâ.
43: Heâs slowly learning to see and read otherâs auras, which helps him get a decent grasp of someone before he approaches them. He still new to this skill and is being guided by his aunt Colene, who specializes in energy reading and is one of the coven elders.
44: Salem is a night owl and often wakes up around afternoon and becomes most active around dusk.
45: Salem looks a lot like Casey but acts very similar to Bastien.
46: Heâs a man spreader when he sits, often slouched in his seat with his knees apart. Otherwise, he sits with his legs stretched out, ankle over ankle.
47: A ball sport that he enjoys playing is basketball. He often plays with Paolo when they hang out. Both playfully trash talk the other the entire time.
48: He made the mistake of laughing at one of the twinâs antics and theyâve been following him around ever since.
49: He enjoys spending time in his shifted raven form and often hangs out as a bird. This also includes giving into his corvid ways and enjoys being a pest to his friends and other passerbyâs.
50: A lot of his spell casting have a black, wispy fog visual effect to it.
51: Because of his mage blood, Salem has a longer lifespan than humans. He will live well into his 100s or older.
52: Salem is very outspoken about his beliefs over politics and social issues. He isnât afraid to say what others might be hesistant to say and he uses his platform to bring awareness to issues he cares deeply about. Heâs not afraid of backlash and always challenges it.
53: Heâs understands enough Spanish to know whatâs being said to him, but canât speak it much.
54: Salem is very prideful and finds it difficult to ask for help. He has an arrogance to him, as he takes deep pride in being a self-made artist. Everything heâs built for himself in his career has been down on his own without the shadow of another label looming over him.
55: Salem likes individualism and admires those that go against the gain and do their own thingâno matter how weird.
56: Bratty behavior is a major turn off for him. It irritates and annoys him when someone is being whiny and childish around him.
57: Sudden loud noises startle him, such as a balloon popping. Popping opening a can of biscuits drives his anxiety up the wall for a few seconds which is one of his sillier phobias. For comedic effect, when he gets startledâhe involuntarily shifts into his raven form and flies up to the nearest perch, leaving a scatter of feathers behind.
58: Itâs a running gag that Salem always has his joint in his hand or between his lips when heâs getting up to shenanigans. No matter how rowdy and chaotic it gets, that smoke isnât going anywhere (aka Julian with his coke and rum from Trailer Park Boys)
59: Despite having lived in California/Night City for a few years, he still uses a lot of Houston slang.
60: Salem doesnât really play well with others, especially when his personality clashes with them. His list of artists heâs willing to work with is very exclusive. Plus he also has a reputation of being difficult.
61: His favorite pastime is sitting out on his balcony in the evenings, with a good drink and a good smoke, and some music playing.
62: When heâs in a deeply committed relationship, he loves showing off his partner. He often likes to post risquĂ© and suggested photos of himself and his boyfriend on his social media.
63: Salem is a man of very little patience. Donât beat around the bush with him or waste his time because he will grow irritated and he will last out. If he wants a direct answer, give him one.
64: He takes every âmediumâ or âpsychicâ with a grain of salt. If he wants to be a dick, heâll test them to see if theyâre legit or not. The only ones he believes so far are the ones in his coven.
65: His turn-onâs include but arenât limited to: masks/ski-masks, being stalked (consensually) by his intimidating boyfriend, and adrenaline fueled hookups in alleyways.
66: Salem keeps the bullets when heâs been shot at and has been hit, as little morbid tokens.
67: Heâs attracted to men that share the same aesthetic and style as he does. When he used to date women, he was attracted to girls with styles/aesthetics opposite of his.
68: Salem is a slow-burn in every sense of the word. It takes time to truly get to know him and gain his trust. But when you do, heâs a ride or die friend for life.
69: He seemingly has a strange and long feud with a seagull named Terry. There is little to no explaining on who or what this seagull isâif itâs another shapeshifter or if itâs just some random bird dedicated to ruining Salemâs day. But itâs on sight and itâs almost as if he purposely shows up to antagonize Salem specifically. If you see a raven and a seagull scrapping it out in a parking lotâjust keep walking, it doesnât concern you.

Dealing with Demons Chapter 7: Having Fun Despite Extenuating Circumstances Part 1: Riley
Masterlist with CW
Taglist: @demyxdancer @softvampirewhump @d-cs
Riley was running late for work. They had treated themself to breakfast from a nearby coffee shop to celebrate solving an "alien abduction" case. It was never really aliens, usually it was vampires messing with their victims while they were still suggestable, or the fae collecting materials for the magical equivalent of mad science. This time it was the later, so a joint fae/Bureau team had hunted down those responsible. They were apprehended, and the case was closed. As far as Riley had heard the offenders were going to be spending the next century doing something in between community service and indentured servitude.
Sil hated working with the fae though, which was why Riley was getting her coffee and a chocolate croissant, to help celebrate no longer having to work with them until the next fae-related case came up. But the line was longer and slower than expected, and Riley ended up ten minutes behind schedule. Not a good look for just a week after getting back from being suspended. Still, the world wasn't going to fall apart without them while they got breakfast.
When Riley opened the soundproof waiting room door chaos leaked out. Everyone was running somewhere and yelling, every face was full of panic. The elevator opened to show a small crowd of researchers, each with an armful of files, who rushed out towards the hastily made cluster of desks that seemed to be where everyone was running to or from. There was an agent at the center of the chaos who seemed to be barking orders at everyone he saw. Riley couldn't remember the man's name, but recognized him as the leader of the team assigned to investigate the missing person cases.
Riley rushed to Director Coleman's office.
"What's going on?!"
Coleman looked up from where she had her head in her hands. "Andrew Bell disappeared from prison."
"Like, escaped orâ"
"Disappeared. We sent people to Clara Bolton's house to protect her, but..."
Riley's heart sank. "No."
"She's gone too. Just vanished. No two disappearances have been this close together before. This is an absolute clusterfuck. We have the agents working on the other disappearances briefed on the situation, but I'm having Agent Silverman's team take point. Including you. And listen, Agent Bishop, I need you to contact Avi."
"What? Why?"
"Because they'll know if Bolton is still alive."
Riley fished out their phone and hit the call button under Avi's contact information.
"Riley? Whatâ"
"Meet me at the Bureau. It's important."
"Why?"
"I'll tell you when you get here."
"I'd rather know what I'm walking into."
"Just get here! It's an emergency!"
There was a pause. Then, "I'll be outside the building in five minutes."
Riley hung up and walked towards the exit. Coleman followed. Soon they were outside, and, after a moment of waiting, the already cool morning air chilled and Avi appeared. The demon was dressed professionally. Their expression was serious and guarded. They crossed their arms over their chest.
"What do you need?"
"Is Clara Bolton alive?" Riley asked, trying to keep the desperation out of their voice.
"Yes. Why?"
"Give me your word she's alive!" Riley demanded.
"I give you my word she's alive. What's going on?" The panic that had infected the base was starting to leak into Avi's tone.
"She's been taken," Director Coleman said. "By supernatural means."
Avi's eyes went wide for a moment. Then they composed themself. But their ever present smile was still missing. "I assume you know who I am. Avi, they/them if you don't. Who are you?"
"Director Sarah Coleman, she/her. I'm in charge of this base."
Avi's expression darkened. "I can assure you I had nothing to do with her disappearance. If I were to end her life, even indirectly, our deal would be broken."
"I guess that rules out the demon of envy," Riley said.
"Maximilian? Why?"
"Andrew Bell was taken too."
Avi took a step back, their mouth fell open, their arms dropped to their sides. "If someone is collecting people who've sold their souls, whatever they're doing can't be good. For those that have been taken or for the demons connected to them. Is this related to the other missing persons cases that have been in the news?"
"We don't know yet, but at this point we have to assume they are. I trust we can count on your cooperation with our investigation?" Coleman asked.
"Director Coleman, no offense, but if I'm going to be working closely with people who know how to banish me back to the psychic plane I'm going to need some assurances."
"Name your terms."
"Let's make a deal. I will assist your agents in this investigation in any way I can short of endangering myself, do whatever I can to not hinder the investigation in any way short of endangering myself, and not harm you or anyone under your employment for the duration of the case. In exchange, you and everyone under your employment will not banish me, imprison me, harm me or attempt to harm me, or interfere with my making and carrying out deals for the duration of the case."
"I won't make anyone promise to not interfere with deals that involve people getting hurt," Coleman said, staring Avi down.
"Fair. And I won't be stepping foot inside that building." Avi pointed at the base, apparently unintimidated. "Do you accept these terms?" Avi held out their hand.
"I accept." Coleman shook it. "Now, the two of you wait here while I get Agents Silverman and Green. You're going to investigate the crime scenes."
"While we do that someone should be making a list of relevant missing persons reports. I can go to their homes and determine if they've summoned a demon recently and what kind."
"That would be invaluable," Coleman said. "Thank you, Avi."
Their smile finally showed up. "No problem, new boss."
Riley turned to Avi as Coleman left. "For a minute there I thought you were going to ask for her soul."
"Deals can be for things other than souls, and I figure I can give you this one case for free since I'm already involved in it."
"What about the Bell case?"
"That one was a favor to you. Now I'm officially part of the team. Like a consultant or a liason." Judging by the demon's tone, this seemed to greatly amuse Avi.
"So if we need your help with another case then you'll want her soul?"
Avi shrugged then leaned forward. "I probably won't ask for hers," They said conspiratorially.
"Oh." Riley's blood ran cold. Avi wanted their soul.
Avi put a hand on Riley's shoulder. "But that's for future us to worry about."
Then Mike and Sil arrived. Sil walked up to where Riley and Avi were standing.
"Avi."
"Agent Silverman." Avi did a mock salute. Mike stifled a chuckle. Sil's frown deepened.
"For this mission I am your superior. You will listen to what I tell you to do, and you will not act without consulting me."
Avi's face got serious. "Understood."
"Good. We might just get through this without disaster. Now come on, we're taking car five."
Mike called shotgun as soon as they were in sight of the parking garage and sprinted towards the car. Sil sighed and quickened her own pace. This left Riley and Avi somewhat alone together.
"So... Riley... are you working on any new playlists?"
"Can we not talk unless it's about the investigation?"
"Oh." Avi frowned. Okay."
Riley put in their earbuds and played their de-stress playlist. Today was definitely not going how they thought it would.
......
Soon they were squeezing themself into the backseat of the car next to Avi, because no matter how much they were reeling from the revelation that the demon wanted their soul, they were still more comfortable around Avi than the rest of the team was.
"How long is the drive going to be?" Avi asked.
"Forty-five minutes," Sil answered.
"Hmm." Then Avi leaned their head back and closed their eyes. Mike looked back at them and then got Riley's attention. They took out one earbud.
"Do demons sleep?" Mike whispered.
"Not that I know of." Riley's tone was similarly quiet. They moved to put the earbud back in but Mike gestured for them to stop.
"Then what are they doing?"
"I don't know."
"Ask them."
"You ask them."
"No way, they like you."
"I'm not going toâ"
"I'm meditating," Avi said. "But I can still hear you just fine."
Sil laughed. A blush rose in Mike's cheeks and he turned back around. Riley put their earbud back in. They wondered why a demon would need to meditate, but not enough to ask.

Away from the horror unfolding in Israel, the past month has provided one long acid test for the Westâs commitment to liberal values. What are we to make of middle-class bien pensants asserting that mass murder requires âcontextâ, of the overt antisemitism, and of a police force that makes excuses for theocrats calling for âjihadâ on the streets of London? For some, this is proof of the failure of multiculturalism. For others, it is the final straw that broke the back of liberalism. Hate speech laws must now be strengthened, certain protests ought to be banned, and we must no longer tolerate the intolerant.
Republican senator Tom Cotton has called for those who express support for Hamas to be deported, and Donald Trump has promised to do so if re-elected. In France, Emmanuel Macron has outlawed pro-Palestine rallies on the grounds of maintaining public order, although his decree has been largely ignored. Closer to home, a pro-Palestinian protest has been scheduled in London for Armistice Day, a tactic surely intended to generate as much outrage and attention as possible.
In that respect, it has already succeeded. Rishi Sunak has stopped short of a ban, but has called on the Met Police to make ârobust useâ of its powers to prevent the Remembrance events being disrupted. In this, he is out of kilter with the majority of the country: only 18% believe it âshould be allowed to go aheadâ.
Liberalism has always been a tricky prospect, cherishing personal autonomy and freedom of speech up to the point where our behaviour encroaches on the rights of others. To ideologues, it is a poison, because it rejects their insistence that we ought to follow a preordained set of rules. Some even claim that liberalism is itself an ideology, though I see it as the precise opposite: it is the repudiation of ideological thinking â because it refuses to accept oversimplified interpretations of reality, or to outsource our decision-making capacities to an already established creed. This is why there are liberals on the Left, the Right, and everywhere in between.
Yet it has been dispiriting to see our commitment to Enlightenment values being assaulted on multiple fronts. There are theocratic extremists who oppose free speech and would happily see blasphemers and apostates executed. There are Western activists intoxicated by the moonshine of intersectional identity politics calling for censorship and other restrictions. And now, we have those who once considered themselves to be âliberalâ pronouncing that there should be limitations to freedom of speech and assembly.
Even those who have previously decried âcancel cultureâ appear to be relishing its impact on their opponents. A lecture at Liverpool Hope University by Professor Avi Shlaim, a critic of Israel, was cancelled out of concern for the âsafety and wellbeingâ of students; Michael Eisen, a geneticist at UC Berkeley, was fired as editor-in-chief of eLife magazine for sharing a satirical article from The Onion which took a pro-Palestine stance. Eisen, some have pointed out, had previously questioned whether cancellation really exists. But while a degree of schadenfreude is understandable, it is hardly helpful.
That there are no rulebooks to consult is liberalismâs major appeal to those of a free-thinking disposition, but it is also the source of its instability. The authoritarian has no need to engage with his detractors; he can simply have them eliminated. By contrast, the liberal must find a way to coexist with those who yearn to see his freedoms quashed, to somehow reconcile himself to the multiplicity of human outlooks and their inherent incommensurability. But how can you run a marketplace of ideas while there are hooligans trying to overturn the tables?
This essential vulnerability is always tested in moments of crisis. Governments enact âemergency powersâ when at war because short-term authoritarianism seems preferable to the alternative. So when protesters at pro-Palestine marches in London are holding signs that openly celebrate the slaughter, rape and kidnapping of civilians, and an official advisor to the Met police is filmed leading a chant of âfrom the river to the seaâ, there will always be pressure from a justifiably incensed public to resort to authoritarian remedies.
Even in peacetime, liberalism is susceptible to changing trends within the nation state. What happens, for instance, when the majority of any given population rejects the liberal values upon which their society is based? What if a government has implemented reckless migration policies that grant citizenship to those who do not recognise the value of individual freedoms? In such circumstances, the principle of democracy could be its own undoing.
Sweden is often considered to be a case in point. According to its national police chief, the rapid surge in migration over the past decade has led to an âunprecedentedâ rise in gang warfare between those who do not respect the rule of law. On a recent trip to Stockholm, I found myself discussing the implications with a group of residents. One woman expressed the view that Swedish people tended to take liberalism for granted, and that they had assumed newcomers would be eager to adopt the values of the nation that had welcomed them. Now many fear that this was warm-hearted naivety, and that the government had not done enough to ensure widespread integration.
Liberal countries acknowledge their moral responsibility to offer asylum for those in need, and typically take a compassionate view towards foreigners seeking a more prosperous life. At the same time, there must be a degree of societal consensus for the ethos of these nations to survive at all. For where such a consensus is jeopardised, either through mass immigration or radical domestic political movements, the temptation to dispense with liberal values is inevitable. But to call for the deportation of citizens who actively seek the demolition of our culture is to surrender our principles to the very people who oppose them. It is to resign oneself to authoritarianism in a perverse effort to defeat it.
Inevitably, one thinks of Karl Popperâs famous paradox that âin the name of toleranceâ we should claim âthe right not to tolerate the intolerantâ. This is often invoked by activists to defend censorship of their opponents, typically in the form of a well-known cartoon meme that decontextualises and misreads Popperâs formulation:
âUnlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them.â
Popperâs next sentence is often omitted, in which he emphasises that so long as public opinion and rational argument can âkeep them in checkâ, suppression of intolerant views would be âmost unwiseâ. Protesters who take to the streets to celebrate murder fall into this category because they are self-discrediting. They are impervious to reason, but their sentiments are so essentially rebarbative that there is no risk of public opinion shifting in their favour.
But, some might respond, if liberalism is so delicate and continually under threat, why bother with it at all? In short: because it works. For all the claims by identitarian activists that the Western world is a racist hellhole, few living in the era of Jim Crow could have conceived of the advances we have made since then. The triumph of social liberalism is evident in multiple studies that show how Western societies are the most tolerant and diverse to have ever existed. It is no coincidence that all of the major civil rights movements â for black emancipation, feminism and gay rights â have traditionally been underpinned by a commitment to free speech and liberal ideals.
Of course, it is only natural that our patience is wearing thin. Having already witnessed pro-Palestine protesters in London throwing fireworks at police, and chanting in support of âIntifadaâ on the Tube, there can be no guarantees that such behaviour wonât be repeated on Saturday. The timing seems not only calculated to maximise publicity, but also as a declaration of contempt for British values and history.
But even if unruly and disrespectful, it would be self-defeating to ban the protest, or to insist on deportations for the worst offenders. Taking action against direct incitement to violence is one thing, but compromising on our key values is another. If we renege on our principles at the very moment when they are most imperilled, we risk undermining the very foundations upon which our civilisation is built. The authoritarian instinct may be a human constant but, with vigilance, it can be forestalled.

Chapter Seven: Sweetpea (Jason Todd's POV)
I cleared my throat, sitting in the car across the street from the house. My hands shook, and I jumped as I noticed a little hand waving from the upstairs window. I got out of the car, dreading what was to come. I wouldâve found an excuse to stay away if it wasnât an emergency. Terry had a group project at school, so it was just me. I didnât have work. I had no excuse. Not that I wanted one. I wanted to be there, but my nerves wouldnât let me. I put one foot in front of the other, watching the door get closer, and then I heard my knuckles rapping at the front door. No one answered, so I used my key. âAvery-Marie? Itâs Grandpa!â I shouted. She ran downstairs in a teal leotard and a pair of nylon shirts. The swishing noise made me laugh.
âGanma!â Avery-Marie shouted as she jumped into my arms. Her face and hair were dirty. I kissed her cheek as I ventured forward into the cluttered living room. âGanma, I miss you.â
âAnd I missed you⊠Whereâs your mommy?â I asked. Avery-Marie shook her head, hiding her face in my shoulder. Her thick curls were weighed down by oil, dirt, and something that smelled like baby lotion. âAvery-Marie⊠Where is your mommy?â
âMommy sick,â Paloma whispered.
âStay here. Iâll be back for you, okay?â I whispered. My heart dropped into my stomach as I went upstairs. I was around Avery-Marieâs age when my mom got sick. I checked Avery-Marieâs room first. I knew her mom wouldnât be there. I looked around at the piles of unfolded blankets and dirty laundry. Avery-Marie probably hadnât been bathed in days. I stretched my hand, touching a framed drawing of her father, mother, and me. Beside her drawing was an oil painting Avery did for her nursery.
âAbigail! Abigail, itâs your father-in-law!â I called. I didnât hear an answer. I wanted to be angry with her, but she was my sonâs wife. Abigail was a good kid... Just troubled.
I sighed, raking a hand through my hair as I went to Avery and Abigailâs bedroom. I knocked first. âAbby, itâs Dad,â I announced. Nothing. âAbigail⊠Iâm not mad. I justâ. I wanna know why you didnât ask for my help. I wanna know why you wonât answer the doorâŠâ I opened the door, and Abigail sat on the corner of the bed. She slumped over, her arms hanging loosely, fingers near her ankles. I cursed under my breath as I reached into my inner jacket pocket. I sat her up and gave her the nasal spray for her overdose. âBreathe⊠Come on, donât let me be too late.â
Abigail gasped and wrapped her arms around me as she sobbed. âI canâtâ. Why didnât youâ?â
âHush⊠I gotta call 9-1-1. Iâm gonna take Avie until you get betterâ.â
âYou canât even look at her,â Abigail replied. I rubbed her back.
âI looked at her when I came in. Sheâs got a nice âol loosey goosey tooth in the front of her mouth,â I replied, âHow much does the tooth fairy give for those things, accounting for inflation and tooth quality?â
She couldnât laugh. Withdrawal had its claws in her, and I was shocked she could hear half of what I said. I talked to the paramedics, asking that they be discreet for my granddaughterâs sake. I left Abigail and tucked Avery-Marie away in the kitchen with a banana split.
âAbby, itâs gonna be alright⊠You know the number,â I whispered as I kissed her forehead. She held onto my wrist until they took her away.
They left me with the task of explaining things to Avery-Marie. âHey, Sweetpea,â I whispered as I grabbed her from the kitchen. âMommyâs going to the doctor to get better, so youâre gonna keep me company for a little bit.â
Avery-Marie ate her bowl of ice cream. âA long time?â Avery-Marie asked. She looked at me with her fatherâs big brown eyes. Sweet and uncertain. Trusting but afraid..
âA long time for you, yeah⊠But Grandpaâs house is fun. Weâll have yummy meals, you can go to ballet, and Iâll read to you at night. Would you like that?â I questioned as I sat beside her.
Avery-Marie smiled. âGanma, I live in your house?â she questioned.
âYeah⊠Youâll live in my house,â I replied, âFinish your ice cream and meet me upstairs.â
*
It took a half hour to get Avery-Marie cleaned up. She seemed undisturbed by her motherâs absence. The whole experience reminded me of myself with my mother, Catherine. I bounced her on my knee while I kneaded dough at the table. I used to do the same with Andrew when he was small. A special dessert always made the kids smile. The silence didnât bother her either. âWant something to drink, Sweetpea?â I questioned.
âNope,â Avery-Marie answered, âWhatâs Ganma doing?â
âIâm glad you asked! Iâm making strawberry danishes,â I replied, âDo you want me to make them in any shapes?â Avery-Marieâs face lit up.
âHeart!â Avery-Marie exclaimed. I kissed her cheek.
My phone rang before I could reach across the table for the cookie cutters. âHello,â I answered.
âJason, I know youâre taking a personal day, but I canât find Terry,â Warren explained.
âOkay⊠Yeah, umâ. Yeah. Stay on the phone,â I replied as I put the dough in a bowl and covered it. I carried Avery on my hip while I switched over to my earpiece. âWarren? Are you there?â
âI am⊠Iâm so sorry to bother youâ.â
The anxiety in my head and stomach reminded me of the intensity that I felt worse than being on a mission back in my prime. âItâs okay. My personal day was short notice⊠Umâ. Sorry, when was he supposed to be home?â I asked. I had to pull myself together for Avery-Marie and Warrenâs sake. Sweating and panicking wouldnât help anyone. I had to find Terry before he could get into trouble. Not that I thought he was looking for it. I buckled Avery-Marie into her car seat and put her headphones over her ears. They were bright blue and had some slime-themed cartoon characters on them. She clicked her heels together, letting her shoes light up, and I smiled. At least she was okay despite the shitty start to our morning. I forgot how much I missed her. I inhaled and blew out all my anxieties.
Warren explained that he planned on picking Terry up from school after finishing working on the group project with his classmates. After he arrived at the school, one of the kids explained that a gang of kids in pumpkin masks chased Terry south of the library. That was all I needed to find him. South of the library was an abandoned overpass. Crossbones territory. They were a cult-slash-gang devoted to Scarecrow. I knew some of the kids in the gang. A lot of them were on drugs. Huffing fear toxin whenever they could get their hands on it. They were worse than the Jokerz, because those kids could be scared straight enough to be tolerated. Terry belonged to a small gang before he was released, and it wouldnât be easy for him to avoid the attention of the other gangs. Theyâd see him as easy prey now that heâd separated from his old gang. I had every reason to believe his life was in danger, but I wouldnât let Warren know that. Not until I knew for sure.

IDF Ordered Hannibal Directive on October 7 to Prevent Hamas Taking Soldiers Captive
'There was crazy hysteria, and decisions started being made without verified information': Documents and testimonies obtained by Haaretz reveal the Hannibal operational order, which directs the use of force to prevent soldiers being taken into captivity, was employed at three army facilities infiltrated by Hamas, potentially endangering civilians as well
[full text of article copy/pasted]
Gaza Division operations and airstrikes in the first hours of October 7 were based on limited information. The first long moments after the Hamas attack was launched were chaotic. Reports were coming in, with their significance not always clear. When their meaning was understood, it was realized that something horrific had taken place.
Communication networks could not keep up with the flow of information, as was the case for soldiers sending these reports. However, the message conveyed at 11:22 A.M. across the Gaza Division network was understood by everyone. "Not a single vehicle can return to Gaza" was the order.
At this point, the IDF was not aware of the extent of kidnapping along the Gaza border, but it did know that many people were involved. Thus, it was entirely clear what that message meant, and what the fate of some of the kidnapped people would be.
This was not the first order given by the division with the intent of foiling kidnapping even at the expense of the lives of the kidnapped, a procedure known in the army as the "Hannibal procedure."
Documents obtained by Haaretz, as well as testimonies of soldiers, mid-level and senior IDF officers, reveal a host of orders and procedures laid down by the Gaza Division, Southern Command and the IDF General Staff up to the afternoon hours of that day, showing how widespread this procedure was, from the first hours following the attack and at various points along the border.
Haaretz does not know whether or how many civilians and soldiers were hit due to these procedures, but the cumulative data indicates that many of the kidnapped people were at risk, exposed to Israeli gunfire, even if they were not the target.
At 6:43 A.M., at which time rocket barrages were launched at Israel and thousands of Hamas operatives were attacking army strongholds and the division's observation and communications capabilities, the division's commander Brig. Gen. Avi Rosenfeld declared that "the Philistines have invaded."
This is the procedure when an enemy invades Israeli territory, upon which a division commander can assume extraordinary authority, including the employment of heavy fire inside Israeli territory, in order to block an enemy raid.
A very senior IDF source confirmed to Haaretz that the Hannibal procedure was employed on October 7, adding that this was not used by the divisional commander. Who did give the order? This, said the source, will perhaps be established by post-war investigations.
In any case, says a defense official who is familiar with the October 7 operations at the Gaza Division, in the morning hours "no one knew what was going on outside." He says that Rosenfeld was in the war room, not emerging, "while outside a world war was raging."
"Everyone was shocked by the number of terrorists who had penetrated the base. Even in our nightmares, we didn't have plans for such an attack. No one had a clue about the number of people kidnapped or where army forces were. There was crazy hysteria, with decisions made without any verified information," he continued.
One of these decisions was made at 7:18 A.M., when an observation post at the Yiftah outpost reported that someone had been kidnapped at the Erez border crossing, adjacent to the IDF's liaison office. "Hannibal at Erez" came the command from divisional headquarters, "dispatch a Zik." The Zik is an unmanned assault drone, and the meaning of this command was clear.
This wasn't the last time that such an order was heard over the communications network. Over the next half hour, the division realized that Hamas terrorists had managed to kill and abduct soldiers serving at the crossing and at the adjacent base. Then, at 7:41 A.M., it happened again: Hannibal at Erez, an assault on the crossing and the base, just so that no more soldiers be taken. Such commands were given later as well.
The Erez border crossing was not the only place this happened. Information obtained by Haaretz and confirmed by the army shows that throughout that morning, the Hannibal procedure was employed at two other locations penetrated by terrorists: the Re'im army base, where the divisional headquarters were located, and the Nahal Oz outpost in which female spotters were based. This did not prevent the kidnapping of seven of them or the killing of 15 other spotters, as well as 38 other soldiers.
Over the next few hours, division headquarters started putting the pieces of the puzzle together, realizing the extent of the Hamas attack, but missing the invasion of Kibbutz Nir Oz, which the first army forces reached only after the terrorists had left. Regarding the frequency of employing the Hannibal procedure, it seems that nothing changed. Thus, for example, at 10:19 A.M. a report reached divisional headquarters indicating that a Zik had attacked the Re'im base.
Three minutes later, another such report arrived. At that time, Shaldag commando forces were already on the base fighting the terrorists. To this day, it's not clear whether one of them was hurt in the drone attack. What is known is that over the communications network there was a message asking everyone to make sure no soldier was outdoors on the base, since IDF forces were about to enter and drive out or kill remaining terrorists.
The decision to conduct attacks inside outposts, says a senior defense official, will haunt senior commanders all their lives. "Anyone making such a decision knew that our combatants in the area could be hit as well."
But such attacks took place, it turns out, not only inside outposts or bases. At 10:32 A.M., a new order was issued, according to which all battalions in the area were ordered to fire mortars in the direction of the Gaza Strip. Internal discussions in the army noted that this order, attributed to Brig. Gen. Rosenfeld, was heavily criticized, since at that time, the IDF did not have a complete picture of all the forces in the area, including soldiers and civilians. Some of these were in open areas or in woods along the border, trying to hide from the terrorists.
At that point, the army did not know the number of people who had been kidnapped. "We thought they numbered dozens at that stage," a military source told Haaretz. Firing mortars at the Gaza Strip would endanger them as well. Furthermore, another order given at 11:22 A.M., according to which no vehicle would be allowed to return to Gaza, took this a step further.
"Everyone knew by then that such vehicles could be carrying kidnapped civilians or soldiers," a source in Southern Command told Haaretz. "There was no case in which a vehicle carrying kidnapped people was knowingly attacked, but you couldn't really know if there were any such people in a vehicle. I can't say there was a clear instruction, but everyone knew what it meant to not let any vehicles return to Gaza."
A new development occurred at 2:00 P.M. All the forces were instructed not to exit border communities toward the west, in the direction of the border, with an emphasis on not chasing terrorists. At that point, the border area was under intense fire, directed at anyone in that area, making it a danger zone.
"The instruction," says the source in Southern Command, "was meant to turn the area around the border fence into a killing zone, closing it off toward the west."
At 6:40 P.M., military intelligence believed that many terrorists were intending to flee together back to the Gaza Strip, in an organized manner. This was near Kibbutz Be'eri, Kfar Azza and Kissufim. Following this, the army launched artillery raids at the border fence area, very close to some of these communities. Shortly afterwards, shells were fired at the Erez border crossing. The IDF says it is not aware of any civilians being hurt in these bombardments.
Unrestricted fire
One case in which it is known that civilians were hit, a case that received wide coverage, took place in the house of Pessi Cohen at Kibbutz Be'eri. 14 hostages were held in the house as the IDF attacked it, with 13 of them killed. In the coming weeks, the IDF is expected to publish the results of its investigation of the incident, which will answer the question of whether Brig. Gen. Barak Hiram, the commander of Division 99 who was in charge of operations in Be'eri on October 7, was employing the Hannibal procedure. Did he order the tank to move ahead even at the cost of civilian casualties, as he stated in an interview he gave later to the New York Times?
Over all the months that have passed, the IDF has refused to say whether this procedure was employed against civilians who had been taken hostage. It now seems that even if the answer is positive, the question may have been only a partial one. The actions of Hiram may have simply been congruent with the way the IDF operated that day.
As far as Haaretz knows, even at 9:33 P.M. this was still the situation on the ground. At that time, there was a further order from Southern Command: close off all the border area with tanks. In fact, all forces in the area received permission to open fire at anyone approaching the border area, without any restrictions.
The IDF spokesman responded by saying that "the army has been fighting for six months at high intensity on several fronts, focused on attaining the war's objectives. In tandem, the IDF has begun conducting internal investigations of what transpired on October 7 and the preceding period. The aim of these investigations is to learn and to draw lessons which could be used in continuing the battle. When these investigations are concluded, the results will be presented to the public with transparency."

Why Hertzâs Bet On Tesla Isnât Paying Off In The U.S.
"In October 2021, Hertz publicly announced it intended to buy 100,000 Tesla vehicles. Newly emerged from bankruptcy, Hertz had a bold plan to lead the EV revolution in car rental. Shares of Hertz soared, as did Teslaâs - its market value hit $1 trillion. First mover advantage aside, it would help Hertz distinguish itself in an industry plagued by commoditization. But only a couple of years in, the rental companyâs EV strategy is facing some serious challenges: pricing troubles, skyrocketing repair costs and low resale values. Meanwhile big rental rivals are holding back on EVs. Hertzâs investors are divided over what to do next: either kill, or at least pause the EV initiative, or try to find a way to make it work. Meanwhile, the company is planning to reduce the share of Tesla vehicles in its fleet and buy more from other automakers.

i'll tag @x-writes @avi-why @piyawrites and anyone else who wants to do this! :)
tw for death mention and light body horror
1. the persistence effect (novella)
"I don't love you."
2. nharonere nights (novella)
In Nharonere, the night always glimmered like the edge of a dagger.
3. the fateweaver (novel)
I am broken.
4. a spoonful of hope in the aether (short story)
Itâs been a few weeks since she died, now.
5-7. annals of the anathemata (short story collection)
- the holy & the hellfire
The moonlight pricked at my peeling skin, the air too cold for my furious form.
- the revered & the riversong
Thereâs something oddly peaceful about the river at night â its waters black as the sky above, stars reflected in its depths like pinpricks in a silk tapestry.
- earthen ash & ashen bone (tentative title)
Thereâs a howling and a scratching at the door every night.
8-20. the crimson moon (novel)
Xalia strode down the marble halls, the soft leather of her shoes meeting each tile with a cacophony of echoes.
A blackened hand emerged from the blinding cerulean and milky tendrils of magic, fingernails morphing into outstretched claws.
Xalia woke long before the sun.
Silaesan could feel her rage before he could see her.
When Xalia woke she was exactly where she expected to be: the castle dungeons.
Nightfall found Xalia and Vanna perched on felled oaks with a bonfire between them.
The velour sky drawn around her, stars flashing like cloak-clasps in the twilight â Xalia felt almost at peace.
Mikah stepped off the ship and onto the boardwalk, surveying the grey expanse around him.
"You know, if you wanted to take my breath away you could have just asked me out," Dorian grinned as a cutlass was pressed to his throat.
The rain batted in sheets against the rooftops, enveloping the lower town in its torrential grip.
The sun smiled sweetly in the sky when Vanna woke, wrapping her in a warm embrace.
Verena smiled â softly, subtly â hoping that it would make the red rimming her eyes less noticeable.
Dorian peered over the rim of his tankard at Mikah, matching the amber of the liquid to the amber of his hair.
#i sure do write xalia waking up a lot asldkfjdsalj#this was actually really enlightening tho#bc i definitely need to make some of these more gripping#but it's also nice to see that (most) of the more recently written ones are better (imo) than the older ones#kit writes#tag game
