Not to pull out some critical psychology language, but I think a lot of people would benefit from learning about natural kinds vs social constructions. The ways we define gender and sexuality are social constructions—that is, experiences categorized and given meaning through long periods of discourse. Even sex is not a natural kind. Genitals, chromosomes, hormone compositions, those are natural kinds, but the ways we categorize and ascribe meaning to them are social constructs. Now, just because something is socially constructed, that doesn't mean it isn't "real" in the ways it affects people's lives and the ways that they connect to it, just that it's important to remember that the concept was created by humans and its okay if the definition of concepts shift to meet our needs :)

i hate to be that guy, but the idea that gender, sex, and sexuality are ontologically pure concepts that can be rigidly defined if we simply police our language enough (our english language, because of course) is—i cannot stress this enough—a total waste of time. you may as well spend your afternoons teaching a brick how to swim

My take has always been that when it comes to abuse, it's far more productive to condemn the abuser's actions than it is to try and guess at their motives. That's what a lot of NPD discourse is—assigning motivations to a person based on their actions. The behaviours people often attribute to "narcissists," like manipulation, gaslighting, and lovebombing, can also be done by anyone else.

And from studying blogs that discuss narcissism, I can assure you: most people who are trying to convince you that "narcissists" are ruining your life are trying to profit from you. They all sell books or courses or have Betterhelp sponsorships. They're telling you what feels good to hear, so that you trust them and will take their advice.

"If my abuser wasn't a narcissist, the abuse wouldn't have happened. Or I would have at least gotten an apology."

I get it. When you're abused, you want to understand why someone would do that to you. And if your abuser happens to have a mental illness, that can be a convenient answer.

But it's highly unlikely that that's the case. With all the horrible things that are normalized by society and done openly on a regular basis with no fear of consequences, it makes no sense to believe that mental illness is the cause. People are cruel because society allows them to be.
