I feel like disappointment in Biden is baffling to me because he was always a disappointment. He was the asshole who got to ride to power on the coattails of a better man. He told bizarre and repeated lies (despite getting caught at it and his team telling him not to) about having a Welsh coal miner dad when he did not and he stole that story from actual Welsh people. I read a profile of him years back that pointed this out and told the story of the time he straight up ignored good advice from an expert not to plant a certain kind of tree too close together and flew a bunch of them out to plant, at night because he was just too fucking excited about it, and they all died. He’s not a smart man! He’s charismatic ish and lacks principles and as far as I can tell doesn’t really care about abortion rights or a lot of things we’d consider pretty critical to preserving freedom. I sincerely thought he couldn’t become President because there were so many obviously better candidates in the pool. I underestimated the sexism and antisemitism in American politics, and when he became the candidate in 2020 I gritted my teeth and voted for him because the alternative was a man who is not only an idiot but also profoundly dangerous. Trump is not ha-ha crazy, he’s Mussolini crazy. He is not dangerous because he’s stupid, although that doesn’t help; he’s dangerous because he does not care about anyone except himself under any circumstances and if that means he lets the far right push us straight into forced birth for white women and sterilization for women of color he’s going to do that. If that means conversion therapy for queers and death penalty for homosexual acts he’s going to do that. He has literally no limits. If he gets back into power, a whole lot of people are going to die, again. It’s not a hypothetical because it happened the first time and he’s only going to get worse.

I am not, never have been, and never will be a fan of Biden. To pretend that he and Trump are in any way equivalent is wrong at best and another goddamn Russian psy-op at worst. To pretend that a third party candidacy is viable in the US is to completely ignore every election of your lifetime and your parents’ lifetimes, and to further ignore the lesson of Ross Perot.

You cannot save Palestinians by not voting for Biden in November; the best you can do is chip away at his margin, and the worst you can do is see Trump elected so he can decide to do the worst possible thing in ever circumstance. Biden has Palestinian blood on his hands and watching this when we could have had Bernie or Elizabeth Warren instead is maddening. (I would have preferred Hillary to Trump, but I don’t think she’d be any different than Biden here. They’re both old-school politicians.)

I hate everything about this, and I hate that saying “maybe don’t put the man who literally said he would kill his political enemies in power” is seen as supporting genocide. It’s acknowledging reality. Joe Biden as a person can eat rocks for all I care. I was kind of hoping he’d die sooner in his term so we’d have time to get used to and then vote for President Harris. (Remember when the line was “she’s a cop, don’t vote for her”? Funny how there’s always a reason not to vote for a woman or a person of color or someone you just “don’t like” and can’t put a finger on why except she “seems angry.” Oh does she. How would she not? When Michelle fucking Obama, the picture of grace , STILL got called angry for having the nerve to be a Black woman with an opinion? When Hillary Clinton lost to a man with no political experience to her decades and who openly discussed sexually assaulting women? Would you have voted for President Harris? Or would you let Trump win again because you don’t LIKE her personally and she’s made decisions and statements you disagree with?)

Biden has both less power than his critics give him credit for and more power than his fans give him credit for. He needs to do more to pressure Israel and although it’s a delicate diplomatic situation I’d rather see us fuck up our diplomatic relationship with Israel than watch more Palestinians get murdered for things like “wanting to eat” and “existing.” The line has been crossed, and he doesn’t see it. Because he wasn’t the best person for the job. Because they didn’t get elected, because of sexism/antisemitism/racism. Hell, I have no idea what bootlicker Pete Buttegieg would have done here, but I’d have given him a try. But no. We got Biden and we’re stuck with this reality where you can be as leftist as you want and still have to look at the situation and decide whether you’re comfortable contributing to a Trump victory through inaction. I want socialism—I want every single person on Earth to have clean drinking water, enough safe food, shelter, medical care, and education—and I’m going to vote for Biden, pissy as it makes me, because the only actual alternative is so, so much worse, for me personally as both a woman and a queer, and for everyone in America and the rest of the world who Trump would find reasons to hurt. What do you think the man who openly and repeatedly praises dictators is going to do when those dictators massacre their own people? Yes, we need to care about this genocide now. We also need to care about all of the other people who are at real risk, both at home and abroad. Would a Trump government agree to fund military intervention in Haiti without insisting on it being a colonial exercise in power? Would a Trump government roll back the restrictions on discriminating against transgender patients in healthcare? How would Trump respond if Orban started dragging people into the streets and shooting them en masse? How would Trump respond if China finally went for it and invaded Taiwan? There are more lives at stake here than mine or yours or even those of the Palestinians, who have deserved better for literally decades and are being mass killed in ways that should result in immediate sanctions, a war crimes trial, and the execution of Netanyahu.

The world deserves better from you than complicity in a Trump victory.

Sanegiyuu Makes So Much Sense!!

I absolutely adore the ship of Sanemi and Giyuu and it never fails to confuse me when people say they don't understand why people ship them or when people say it makes no sense, especially when compared to other ships. I understand it's one thing to personally not ship Sanegiyuu because obviously it's just not for everyone and other people prefer other ships, but I definitely feel like I can confidently say that the ship makes a ton of sense from a character perspective. 

Firstly, Sanemi and Giyuu have this mutual interest in each other that just isn't displayed when Giyuu or Sanemi interact with the other Hashiras or just others in general. While Sanemi loves to say that he hates Giyuu’s attitude he could just as easily just ignore him and leave him alone since he ‘dislikes him so much’. But clearly Sanemi has some sort of interest with Giyuu as seen when he gets so worked up when Giyuu tries to leave the Hashira meeting after it was over in comparison to the other Hashiras who albeit showed care for Giyuu’s abandonment, they all remained seated except for Sanemi who tried to physically force Giyuu to stay. If Sanemi really did dislike Giyuu’s presence he wouldn't have cared if Giyuu left or stayed but the fact that he wanted him to stay shows he does care about him even if it was negative at first. Then there was their whole sparing scene in which Sanemi apparently stormed to Giyuus house to try to talk to him or at least get some kind of reaction out of him which clearly shows Sanemi’s abnormal obsession with Giyuu whether it be his actions or trying to understand him. Then when Tanjiro 'interrupted’ the two fighting Sanemi seemed to gain a new layer of protectiveness that he clearly didn't have while fighting when he noticed Tanjiro’s presence. While Sanemi seemed unrestrained and free while fighting Giyuu with an onslaught of loose movements and confident attacks as if his spar with Giyuu was a form of stress relief for him, when seeing Tanjiro and realizing his spar with Giyuu was being perceived by another he immediately put his borders back up. Sanemi immediately came to the conclusion that Tanjiro was spying on them as if their spar was a private moment between two close companions. Sanemi already seemed to get defensive when Tanjiro arrived but when Tanjiro revealed Sanemi enjoyance of frivolous things such as ohagi and green tea and Sanemi’s persona as some kind of extreme tough guy who didn't care for things such as sweets was broken obviously Sanemi started to get irritated. What's interesting about this scene though is that it isn't until Giyuu comments on Sanemi’s affection for ohagi does Sanemi crash out and punch the lights out of Tanjiro. It's just so obvious that Sanemi was embarrassed that Giyuu could think he's soft which just provided another example of Sanemi caring what Giyuu thinks of him when he clearly does not care when it comes to others. It's just too funny how much Sanemi cares about Giyuu to the point where the scene right before THE ENTIRE INFINITY CASTLE ARC AND THE DEATH OF SO MANY CHARACTERS he is literally just storming off and steaming at the thought of “what would have happened if Tanjiro didn't interrupt”.

It’s even more hilarious that Giyuu, the character that is literally known for being antisocial and having no friends, just wants to be Sanemi’s friend. Giyuu has Tanjiro and Shinobu and definitely a few others who are trying or have tried desperately to befriend him with absolutely no reaction but apparently Giyuu decides that he wants to befriend the unapproachable guy with anger issues who says he dislikes him. I'm sorry but that is such homosexual activity I don't even know how else to put it. Like Sanemi literally barged into Giyuu’s house, fought him, knocked his little brother out, and stormed off without a word, and all Giyuu can think of afterward is how happy he is to know Sanemi’s favorite food and is already coming up with a sad plan to win him over. This dude is really smiling and all thinking of his perfect future interaction with Sanemi with floating flowers in his little fantasy. I also just love the idea that he uses Tanjiro as his little wingman to help come up with ideas to win Sanemi over that all probably fail miserably just like the ohagi. 

Sanemi and Giyuu have been set up from the beginning and you can see the future of their relationship from the fact that Giyuu’s voice was enough to distract Sanemi enough to get hit by Tanjiro who was a much lower rank than himself in the scene of Nezuko’s trial. The characters have been set up as parallel characters throughout the series in so many ways it's hard to not spot the special relationship between them that isn't there between other characters. Their character design and personalities are already foil with Sanemi’s white hair and impulsive and explosive personality compared to Giyuu’s black hair and calm and collected personality. There is Sanemi’s ability to speak his mind at all times and Giyuu’s inability to speak his mind at times at all. There is Sanemi’s main emotion and expression being one of anger with Giyuu’s being sadness. Another big foil being Giyuu’s compassion and trust towards Tanjiro and Nezuko and their situation while acting as an advocate for them while Sanemi had clear mistrust towards them and their situation acting as their biggest opponent during Nezuko’s trial. Finally, there is the fact that Giyuu’s fighting style is one that revolves around ultimate defense while Sanemi is one that focuses on the ultimate attack. Just by noticing their opposites you can tell the importance of their relationship, but this continues throughout the series in which they are the ONLY two hashiras to survive which was definitely done for a reason. Their relationship is also displayed during their clash to turn their blades red showing their status as equals. The fact that they are the two last Hashiras ties them together even more seeing as after the war they both kind of don't have anyone to lean on besides themselves with the Kamaboko squad all living together and the Uzui’s having each other, Sanemi and Giyuu don’t have some big family to stay with, so they hang out with each other as seen in the panel why their having lunch together.

Out of every non canon ship I truly think thank Sanemi and Giyuu have the most developed and well written relationship down to basic characterization to where these two seem like they were really made together as a pair. Even though they aren’t canonically romantic, their relationship is written better than some actual cannon ships and I think some people should look more into the smaller details when it comes to this ship!

AITA for forcing my best friend to inject himself and another man with poison in a convoluted prison escape game and making my coworker watch?

I (M26) have been friends with my best friend (M, age unknown but someone on Twitter said he's 39. He doesn't look 39 though) for several years, ever since he sat at a table in a dark room with me and said something really deep. We also work together for a terrorist organization, but he got arrested and sent to a high security prison. While our organization continued its quest to find a magical book and change reality. I realized that I was just a bird trapped in a cage, and set out to prove the free will of man by killing my best friend, setting myself free from my own heart. Unfortunately, my best friend is a mega genius who can see through my plots. So, I waited for my coworker (M3) to fall out of the sky and seeked out his help in finding my best friend's superpower in order to kill him. We broke into the prison using my overcoat (which is actually just a cape) and found him and his homosexual nemesis (M22). Because my best friend is super competitive and has to win and be the smartest at everything, I knew that the only way he'd take the poison is by offering his rival a lethal injection too. I told them I only had one antidote, and whoever escapes first gets it. I even let them both pick a tool, but my friend's rival picked my coworker who's been standing here like a big ol idiot this whole time because he's only three years old and doesn't understand fun. I left to let them complete the game, but I kind of feel bad now. Is this just my restrictive conscience that is tormenting me or am I really doing something wrong?

(I haven't seen any of Ironside so I can't speak on his performance there, but I think it's necessary to include in the submission because while he wasn't actually a wheelchair user in real life, it was the first ever crime show with a disabled main character and I genuinely can't think of another show like that with a *title* character using a wheelchair, particularly of the 60s and 70s.)

This guy had a million hobbies including orchid cultivation, stamp collecting, winemaking, raising cattle and sheep, and founded an association that created a dictionary of the Fijian language. He was a big animal guy and had - from what I've been able to tell - at least a couple dogs (he's noted as one of the first people to import Portuguese Water Dogs to North America), some cats, and a duck. He gave insane amounts of money to charities and was recorded as having sponsored at least 26 foster children with medical needs. He spoke openly about lifelong struggles with weight & image (and about the difficulty of finding acting work when you don't fit the studio hottie build, they made him lose 60+ pounds before they would cast him as Mason despite outperforming their other option in court scenes) and rejected every offer to do a particular popular talk show after the host had started making multiple unprompted jokes about him and his weight. He created numerous inconsistencies in his own life story that, after his death & revelation of a 30+ year relationship with a man he had met during the filming of Perry Mason, have been assumed by both press and people that knew him as intentional exaggeration to keep suspicion of homosexuality low. Absolutely fascinating guy to me, every new fact I learn about him boggles.

May 16th, 1942, Henford-on-Bagley, England

Miranda quietly turned thirteen on a Saturday. She hadn’t wanted a party of any sort, much to the disappointment of Amalia, who thought turning thirteen would be the greatest thing to ever happen to her. Uncle Byron and Aunt Eleora didn’t talk about it, but she knew it was a hard day for them. Her mother after all had been Eleora’s childhood best friend. 

Lydia Leung had come from London to live with them since December, arriving the day after the United States joined the war. They weren’t friends, mostly due to the four-year age difference, but also because she spent all her time with Simon-Elliot. Miranda suspected the pair were dating, but she knew she wasn’t one to say anything. Her own feelings on love were a complex matter. 

She was quiet, still wearing black for her younger brother who’d died six months ago. Eleora tried her best to talk to her, but she knew it was up to Lydia to come out of mourning. When Simon-Elliot came home in July, Miranda was sure Lydia would lighten up. Or at least not isolate herself so much.

In September, Miranda would join her at the preparatory girls’ school Bramblewood College, also located in Henford County, where they would be the first students of Asian descent to attend the school, though Miranda knew the rather large donation from the Duke and Duchess of Feldsbury and their admission were not coincidences. 

“I know you didn’t want a party, dear, but we are still having a nice dinner with cake,” Eleora greeted when she entered the sitting room, setting down her book. 

“I’m surprised you’re not asking why I’m up so early.”

“So is Lydia. And the first night of having your own room is always an adjustment.”

“I’m very glad not to share a room with a toddler.”

She chuckled. “I think we’ll renovate the house when we win the war. Nurseries are a bit of a thing from the past, no?”

“You sound confident we’ll win the war,” Miranda mused, sitting next to her. 

“When the Americans entered the war back in 1917, it changed things. The morale was a complete turnaround. Your father once told me that he’d never been so happy to hear a foreign accent in his life when they arrived in France.” She smiled. “And I like Americans. Much more fun and far less stuck up.”

Eleora noticed Miranda’s sullen look and pursed her lips, concerned. “What is it, Miranda?”

“...Isn’t today hard for you? My mum died today. And I have so many confusing emotions, I barely know what to say or think.”

The older woman sighed. “Of course I miss your mother. She was my best friend. We did everything together. It was a lot like you and Amalia. Joined at the hip.” She paused. “Well, we did other things too.”

Miranda looked at her. “What do you mean by that?”

She frowned. “There’s something you want to tell me, yes?”

“Yes.” The teenager couldn’t deny it. “I… think… I—I’ve never had an interest in boys. I never understood Amalia’s fascination with Hollywood stars, but I’m lucky enough to be raised by people who aren’t ignorant about things society doesn’t speak of. More so that I’ve gotten to be intimate with women who I understand completely now.”

“Are you telling me you’re a homosexual, Miranda?”

“Yes.”

An emotion Miranda did not recognize appeared on her godmother’s face. Eleora’s eyebrows knit together, almost as if she were reminiscing over something that brought her great sorrow. Finally, she sighed and turned to look directly at Miranda. 

“You know, I had my first kiss when I was fourteen, about to be fifteen. It was with a girl—your mother, shortly after her thirteenth birthday. We were each other’s first everything really. And in university, we lived together.”

“My mother had homosexual leanings?”

“Your mother often had many romantic dalliances with men and women, but sexually? She preferred women, so when she and your father began to see one another in a romantic and sexual sense, I was quite surprised.”

“...Did my father know?”

She nodded. “There’s a lot of things you children don’t know about, and even though you’re a teenager now, I still think you’re too young to know everything.”

“You can’t say that and then tell me I’m too young to hear it.”

“In time, Miranda.”

“Was my father always like that, even before my mother died?”

“No. When I first met him, I thought him to be very stubborn and passionate, but also kind and very funny. He was a flame that burnt out too quickly, and I think he loved too much, and that’s why he was driven to such despair, on top of his melancholia.”

Miranda’s memories of her father were few, and even fewer of them were times when he was happy. She hadn’t known it was a suicide until she was ten since they had told her he’d died of a broken heart. He had died of a broken heart in a way, his grief consuming him until it led to his death. 

“Now Miranda,” Eleora began, “I am so happy that you’ve decided to tell your feelings, and I want you to know that I understand, and I have been in your shoes. I want to ask what you want to do. Would you like to tell the rest of the family, including your Aunt Elspeth, or would you rather keep things quiet?”

“Quiet,” the teen said firmly. “I’m not ready to tell everyone yet.”

Eleora stood up, nodding. “Then this conversation will just be between you and me, yes?”

“Yes,” Miranda answered, also standing up.

“Now come here so I can hug you, birthday girl,” her godmother insisted, pulling the girl into a tight embrace. 

Miranda happily hugged her back.

You wish you could say you were a manager there, but your paycheck said otherwise. Assistant to auxiliary tasks. Yeah, that has a lesser of a ring to it. But still, you enjoyed your job, maybe because you got to be around cute boys all day, but mostly because it meant you could get away from your parents a bit. You had freshly graduated when you received a mysterious job offer, from an acquaintance of your former employer. You decided it could be a good idea to leave the family house to get some air. It was indeed ! Because you go to reinvent yourself, even make up a fake name 'cause you felt like it. So here you were Vivi.

Well you were Vivi to most people. Except for this stupid boy that always mockingly despised you, so much you weren't sure if it was a joke anymore. To Shidou, you were maid-vivi. As if the only task you did was cleaning. Well, he was kinda right but you would have never admitted it to him. You still had paperwork and PR work to do sometimes...

You took your paycheck and exited Ego's office. And as you made your way to your staff room (your personal bedroom if you may) you bumped into him, yet again. It seemed like your paths always crossed, you could swear you saw him more than your own reflection these days. “Maid-viviiii” he sang as he walked towards the cafeteria. “Shidou.” Suddenly a crazy thought came to you. You could blackmail him. And win money with it. Obviously you wouldn't extort it out of him, but more at the situation. You grinned. When was it you became evil ? 

“Are you holding up well ?” You turned around before he was too far away. He stopped and turned around too, to see your face. You could see his incomprehension at your concerned face. “What do you mean, maid vivi ? I’m always well, and I recovered perfectly from yesterday's match as a U-20, as I always do”. You wanted to mock him so badly: “even though you lost ?”. But you said instead: “Oh.. So you haven't seen then ?” God you started feeling bad for being this machiavellian. “People online, they found out about, you know… You swinging that way. I’m sorry they outed you to everyone this way. But worry not Shidou, I'll still treat you the same as I am actually an ally to ga–" "I’M NOT GAY !”. Damn he got started fast. What did you get out of this crazy man stunt ? The satisfaction of seeing him suffer AND something that will most likely bring new audiences to Blue Lock TV. BLTV had already started unbeknownst to the boys. If Shidou, one of the most populars contestants, had a girlfriend, it would create new drama that’d bring a new audience. And you being the start of that would most likely mean a raise ! Double homicide. 

That was your ideal without actually thinking things through. Because who was the only girl Shidou could turn to, while living here 247 as you said ? Yup.

@sockdooe, Yep, that's the one. No offense to the author, but it's really irritating to see a fic tagged with relationships that, as of two-hundred thousand words in, still haven't been so much as hinted at.

Would this author appreciate it if someone tagged a two-hundred thousand-plus-word Shiro/Keith or Lance/Hunk fic Keith/Lance? I sincerely doubt it.

Be courteous to your fellow fans and tag things properly, please. I don't think that's too much to ask.

My biggest issue with "Curtis" is that it's glaringly obvious that Shiro was married off to him at the absolute last minute in an attempt on the part of the showrunners to win online brownie points for being the first to depict a gay wedding in a show aimed at children. And, to try to cover their asses after being slammed with accusations of Burying Their Gays for killing Adam.

They used Shiro, who they planned to permanently kill after confirming that he's gay, as nothing more than a tool for their own personal benefit. And, it deservedly backfired on them spectacularly.

I still love Shiro/Keith, but, at my heart, I've found that I'm a multishipper for the both of them. Especially Shiro. Had the writers put in the effort, they could have made me care about, or, at the very least, tolerate his afterthought of a marriage. Shiro deserves to be happy. He deserves love. Even if I hate that it comes with the implication that he left his dream of exploring space and his newfound sense of purpose in being part of the Coalition and defending the universe behind to stay on Earth and become a house-husband.

Instead, "Curtis" is such a non-entity, his name is never once spoken onscreen. He and Shiro never have a conversation outside of shouting impersonal orders at one another in the heat of battle. And, he isn't even drawn consistently from one frame to the next.

For the life of me, I cannot tell if "Curtis" is meant to be in his late twenties, or his forties.

He also has no personality to speak of, outside of maybe liking animals, per a conversation he has with Acxa, rather than his "future husband", and Shiro only looks away from the Atlas's console interface to make eye-contact with him once.

In an entire thirteen episode season.

The showrunners had an opening to give Shiro and "Curtis" an interaction that would have hinted at some degree of chemistry, or even basic platonic affection for each other. When Shiro is slapped across the bridge of his ship- something I still deeply despise- "Curtis" could have rushed to his aid, expressing concern for his captain. Instead, it's Veronica, an actual character, who is at Shiro's side, checking on him and helping him to right himself.

"Curtis" does nothing more than sit and stand on the sidelines, soundlessly gaping at the events playing out in front of him.

That is why I call him a piece of set dressing. His only purpose is to fill out Shiro's bridge crew. They could have utilized any species of alien, a Taujeerian, a Balmeran, one of those deer-esque people from Season Three's Changing of the Guard, for the exact same purpose and absolutely nothing would have changed.

Since there seemed to be some sort of unspoken rule forbidding the show from having more than one LGBTQ+ main lead/Paladin, it honestly would have made more sense for Shiro to marry Coran.

They, at least, have a relationship.

Low bar, I know.

And, that's if you believe that Shiro needed to be in a romantic relationship for his sexuality to matter.

I don't.

Shiro, on his own, is enough. Adam dying didn't take Shiro's homosexuality away and turn Shiro straight. Shiro is still a gay man, whether he kisses a human male-shaped piece of set dressing onscreen or not.

I've made my feelings on Shiro/Adam fairly clear. Realistically, unless Adam underwent some intensive therapy and soul-searching to learn how to be more open, warm, and compassionate with Shiro, they never would have rekindled their relationship, even if Adam had lived and the desire to do so was still there. He and Shiro parted ways on poor terms, and while Shiro didn't appear to resent Adam for it, there would, undoubtedly, be lingering feelings of bitterness that a tearful reunion and rush down the aisle wouldn't resolve.

Shiro was brutally punished by the show's narrative for choosing his dream over Adam. Maybe Adam would feel some sort of regret for that, had he seen his ex return to Earth with a scarred face, prematurely silver hair, and one arm. But, going off of Adam's established characterization and how he acts like he's the rational man while Shiro is an irrational and hysterical woman, the temptation on Adam's part to lord the consequences of Shiro's choice over Shiro- "If you had just listened to me, maybe none of that would have happened"- would very likely surge to the forefront over any desire to offer comfort.

And, that's if Adam hadn't fully moved on and started a new relationship in the interim. Shiro's time in space amounted to two years for him, while it was five years on Earth for Adam. That's an ample enough span to have mourned his lost love, and begun at least considering getting back out there and dating, again.

What it seems to come down to is that people who are vehemently against the mere idea of Shiro and Keith being romantically involved with each other and have no desire to explore any other prospects because their true focus lies elsewhere (Keith, Lance, and pairing them together), but still wish to maintain the guise of wanting happiness for Shiro, pair him off by default with his canon love interests. Regardless of the fact that Adam was shown to be a not particularly great partner, and these authors have to invent a personality for "Curtis" whole-cloth, since he is completely lacking one in the source material.

They don't care how transparent it is that the showrunners hated Shiro and mistreated him at every turn, but still wanted to use his sexuality to garner praise and online asspats. They don't care that the sloppy, half-assed manner in which the wedding was handled unintentionally implies that married life aged Shiro twenty years in the span of six.

spirk was just so soft with each other this episode, even on vulcan. the way spock was so hesitant to fight him and tried his hardest to convince t’pau even when under the pon farr influence.

but he was so smart with the neural paralyzer and i love the way he clearly cares so much anout both of his dumbass friends under his grumpy doctor exterior.

third of all: women

t’pau and t’pring were so powerful and so wonderfully played.

obviously the whole thing with calling t’pring the property of whatever man wins her is very icky but as progressive as star trek was (and still is!), it is a product of it’s time unfortunately.

but besides that, they both just radiated power, and it was so nice to see a woman in a seat of major power.

on another note, stonn has a strikingly small forehead t’pribg i promise i could treat you better.

in my mind uhura wants t’pring (“she’s very lovely mister spock!” i know what you are ma’am.)

fourth: the episode was just. really good.

all of the tension build up before we find out about that spock is basically an omega is masterfully done, and even though i kinda new the plot, i was still sitting on the edge of my seat. incredible.

i also think tbe fight choreography during the gay sex fighting scene was actually really well done, especially when compared to other fight scenes in season 1 (the gorn fight comes to mind).

also the set design for vulcan felt like an actual planet. like usually when they go off the enterprise and onto a planet that’s not basically earth, you can tell that it’s just a bunch of foam blocks, but vulcan was very well made!

the conversation between spirk and kock kirk and spock about “vulcan biology” was very well written and acted in a way that was slightly awkward because of the nature of pon farr, but still felt natural and very in character.

side note: i see online that there’s a lot of people who think that shatner overacts. and i just don’t see it. idk i think he’s really good at playing kirk. i don’t really like the guy, but i like how expressive his acting is.

anyways this was very jumbled but i had a lot of thoughts and yeah.

I’ve been thinking so much about this specific scene from The Caddy (1953).

I couldn’t find an isolated clip, but the timestamp here is roughly 41:17 - 44:15. It’s the scene where Harvey (Jerry) sets up a little celebration for Joe (Dean) after he wins a golf tournament.

First, we see the sign on the door reading “Welcome Home Champ,” which Harvey has clearly handmade himself, giving the first hint of what he feels toward Joe. Joe questions, “I wonder who that’s for,” which could be interpreted a few different ways. Maybe nobody in his life has shown him this level of care and effort before, to the point that he is genuinely taken aback when he gets to the door. Maybe he doesn’t realize how important he is in Harvey’s life and doesn’t think what he’s doing is worthy of any recognition.

Next, he enters the room and we see Harvey. Again, in this scene Jerry is in the familiar trope of playing the “woman” in the relationship. Throughout their filmography and television appearances, Jerry’s characters often serve to reinforce Dean’s masculinity as he plays roles that can very easily be read as feminine and/or queer. In this instance, I am referring to queer as not only relating to gender and sexuality, but ways of existence which fall outside of conformity. The nature of their partnership, both in their act and in real life, is rather unconventional when we consider other male comedy duos of their era. The love and admiration they shared for one another (particularly Jerry to Dean) couldn’t be contained. We can think of other teams such as Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, and Hope & Crosby. In many cases, these men either couldn’t stand each other in real life or were strictly business partners. We can begin to understand how much of an anomaly the Martin & Lewis relationship was. Particularly in the case of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, their films have many scenes with queer implications and ambiguous subtext. However, it is always played more for a laugh and the sheer “shock value” at the very suggestion of homosexuality. I never find this to be the case with Dean and Jerry, as scenes of the same nature often feel more innocent or less derogatory.

Back to the film! When Joe enters the room he shares with Harvey, we see the depiction of a very domestic scene. Harvey is acting as the devoted housewife, dutifully preparing dinner for the two of them with a recipe he learned from Joe’s mother. A little while later, he also remarks “I got the wide noodles you like so well!” This suggests he has gotten to know Joe well enough and has paid enough attention to his preferences that he can invest time and effort into making this a special celebration for Joe. Furthermore, he is even wearing an apron, which can be read as another attribute of a housewife (think of the scene in Rebel Without a Cause when Jim Stark catches his father wearing an apron and performing domestic duties for his mother). Again, this reads as a scene between a husband and wife, and almost could have been plucked out of any 1950s sitcom.

Harvey also has a few gifts for Joe. The first one is a hat which belonged to Harvey’s father, who was a very important figure in his life. We can begin to think about the significance of Harvey gifting Joe such an intimate and personal gift. In the film, it is well established how Harvey reveres his father, and now he is sharing his memory with Joe. In this sequence, Harvey can hardly contain his excitement as Joe opens it and his anticipation is very clear. When Joe tries the hat on and realizes it is too big, Harvey is initially bashful and embarrassed, almost as if he is expecting to be ridiculed. However, Joe seemingly understands the emotional weight of a gift like this along with the significance it carries for Harvey (although he doesn’t let his emotions show, much like Dean himself). In that moment, it is not about gifting Joe a brand new hat that was tailored perfectly for him. If Harvey wanted to do that, he would have. Rather, gifting Joe his dad’s hat was about Harvey giving Joe a piece of himself. Similarly, the next gift Harvey has ready for Joe is a trophy that his father won at an important golf tournament, reflecting the same sentimentality of the hat.

Seemingly, Harvey has set up a party just for the two of them which is an intimate gesture (literally a candlelit dinner, lol). He remarks, “A man that’s under pressure should have things he likes!” This tells us that Harvey wants Joe to succeed and is carefully considering his health and well-being. Then, while discussing the end of the evening he has planned and the ice cream they will have for dessert, Harvey says ���…and we’ll hit the sack.” Interestingly enough, there is only one bed visible in the room they share.

Once Harvey learns that Joe will be going out to a party with a woman rather than staying for the dinner he planned, he expresses hurt and concern. He pleads with Joe to stay before finally acquiescing and agreeing upon a curfew of 11 PM. While Harvey tries to mask his emotions in this situation, it is still very clear to the audience. As he straightens Joe’s tie, he attempts to downplay the effort he clearly put in to set up the dinner. At last, as Joe leaves, Harvey takes the sign off the door and blows out the candle on the table, seemingly losing all interest in what he had prepared for the evening once Joe was no longer there to share it with him. I think this scene also speaks to Jerry’s incredible talent for more serious, emotional scenes.

Well, this turned out a lot longer than I expected. As I said, I have not been able to stop thinking about this scene for a few days and keep rewatching it. Maybe I read way too much into this scene that’s barely three minutes long, maybe it’s not that serious at all, but I had a lot of fun analyzing it and putting some of my thoughts into words. While I’m an undergraduate student, I certainly don’t consider myself a writer so I apologize if this is a bit jumbled. Thank you for reading :)

DRA Character Sexuality Headcanons

I’ll just be making a brief list of what sexual orientation I believe each character from the first Danganronpa Another game has. Remember, I’m not condemning anyone who disagrees with my interpretation or has a different headcanon of a character. I believe everyone is entitled to their own headcanon, even if it blatantly contradicts canon, and you don’t attack others who don’t share the same headcanon as you.

Kiyoka Maki: heterosexual.

Kiyoka spends her last FTE worrying about who’ll be a suitable boyfriend if they don’t escape, so that’s basically my justification for this interpretation.

Mitsuhiro Higa: heterosexual.

Yeah, I don’t think much explanation is needed: he sexually harasses Akane in chapter 1 and brags about how many girls he gets in his FTEs. I understand why some may interpret him as an in-denial homosexual, if only to take the piss out of him, but I don’t see it that way. Mitch is a pretty transparent character, so I doubt something as deep as that is applicable to him.

Kizuna Tomori: heterosexual.

Some see her as a repressed lesbian, which I understand why, but I see her as more of a “straight girl with severe issues in her relationship to men”. Plus, I take into account the FTEs, so Kizuna’s implied attraction to Yuki by her last FTE is indicative of her sexuality to me.

Ayame Hatano: Bisexual.

I forever headcanon Ayame is in love with Akane, but her last FTE has her blushing at Yuki, so I interpret her as a girl-leaning Bisexual.

Kakeru Yamaguchi: Bisexual.

I wholeheartedly ship Kakeru x Kanata (Kakenata? Kanakeru? Yamanori?), so that’s part of it, but Kakeru also gives major guy-liker vibes, so there you go. I also semi-ship Kakeru and Kinji, so that’s further fuel to the fire.

Kanata Inori: heterosexual.

As I just said, Kakeru x Kanata is OTP for me, and that’s all the justification I need.

Kinji Uehara: Pansexual.

This might sound unexpected, but I see Kinji as such an open-minded and big-hearted person that he wouldn’t consider the gender of his partner, even if his religion prevents him from entering any romantic relationships.

Haruhiko Kobashikawa: heterosexual.

Similar story with Mitch, except Haru isn’t nowhere near as creepy. Sure, some think he’s got some homoeroticism with Yuki in his FTEs, but his obsession with the female gender leaves me skeptical of that.

Satsuki Iranami: Pansexual.

Similar to Kinji, I believe Satsuki’s such a pure-hearted person that she wouldn’t even think about her partner’s gender. Still, Satsuhiko for the win!

Yamato Kisaragi: Pansexual.

Literally the exact same explanation with Kinji and Satsuki, only I think he’s got a preference for men.

Mikako Kurokawa: Biromantic Demisexual.

Being the mysterious and quiet girl she is in-game, I doubt Mikako would consider dating someone unless she’s built a secure, trusting relationship with them. However, I’m unsure whether this would apply to pre-game Mikako.

Teruya Otori: homoflexible.

Now, I just can’t unsee Teruya liking other guys, but I also headcanon that Teruya developed feelings for Rei between the time they escaped and pre-SDRA2, so I compensated roughly down the middle.

Akane Taira: Heteroflexible.

I view Akane as predominantly being attracted to men, but may make some exceptions for a girl or two (perhaps Ayame would fit the bill 👀)

Yuki Maeda: Heteroflexible.

Similar to Akane, he seems to be a woman-liker, but I’ve no problem with the idea of him getting together with the right man (*cough*KINJO*cough*). In regards to Utsuro, I think he’s either AroAce or Demisexual.

Rei Mekaru: Panromantic Demisexual.

See, I believe Rei would have an extremely difficult time with getting vulnerable enough with someone to consider dating them, but once a trusting relationship is established, I don’t think she’d care about her partner’s gender.

Tsurugi Kinjo: Biromantic Demisexual.

Similar to Rei, except Tsurugi may have a preference for men, given that he spent much of his backstory and post-SDRA2 presence being defined by his relationships to other men.

what is truly most joyful about this film is scenes like this. the constant gay teasing throughout the plot towards robert hossein's character hits at exactly where it should bc the source of the joke isn't the spectre of homosexuality itself but how much of a ridiculous terror he experiences each time. there are a few things to be said about this character, but it all comes down to his patriotic military persona he is trying to insist on desperately, being as much of a facade and hollow performance as his masculinity itself. it is such an absurd, hysterical dynamic when catherine spaak and tomas milian's characters spot this insecurity and annoy him about it just for the sake of it. bc spaak, to his knowledge, is supposed to be man but is really a woman all along (or is she), so when there is some sort of attraction building between them, she notices this and goes out of her way to create situations where he would have to address his attraction to her, believing himself to be gay since she is a boy, of course. these little scenes leave him so humiliated, and her, in control and amused at the situation, not bc how could he be so stupid he doesn't realize ~the truth (?), -since in this narrative we have to suspend our disbelief anyway and accept that catherine spaak is made to look in any way boyish in her appearance- but he is ridiculous bc he insists so much on a set way of seeing the world. bc her and milian's characters exist completely outside of this norm he is representing and they are the ones ridiculing *him* for clinging so much to it, it's like he's in the minority in the film's narrative. it is to be noted that when the final reveal happens and catherine spaak wears a dress instead of a uniform and tells him of being a woman and being in love w him as well, robert hossein keeps calling her as her 'boy name', theodore, even after their final kiss. it's not the person who has changed, from "man to woman" but only a dress was put on. there is also the fact to be noted here is that catherine spaak never once says, 'i will use this boy name as an alias bc circumstances demand it' she says, 'i am now theodore and i wish to be called that and be a man from now on'. it is completely insane.

^while on the note of clown behaviour and gay jokes, the tomas milian's subplot is practically that he also falls in love w catherine spaak (only bc she wears men's clothing which is so so funny and there really should be a fucking dissertation about clothes as a symbol in this film bc it is relatively so simple and yet says it all) and she does reveal to him that she is technically a woman which does not change his feelings (they said here's how bisexuality can still win) but when other, unaware characters question why he is in love w another man he simply does not correct them. why? because he is insane and also bc just as catherine spaak does w robert hossein, he literally just enjoys shocking ppl with the concept of homosexuality. and this is how you make a fun gay film.
