So I was sitting and thinking about the weird things we do and don’t consider child appropriate. And I was also wondering if I ever read anything as weird as Animorphs apparently was and yeah actually I think I did.

Do y’all remember “The Guardians of Ga’Hoole” by Kathryn Lasky? Those random owl books that were apparently popular enough to make into a movie? I read all 16 of those and they got wild. Spoilers btw

The series starts with our protagonist, Soren, who is a baby. He wants to practice flying, his parents tell him he’s still too young he doesn’t have the right feathers yet. They leave to go hunting and Soren sits at the edge of the nest, fantasizing, thinking about trying it anyway, before he decides he slips and falls to the ground. So he tries to hide and wait for his parents to come save him, but he gets kidnapped by a group of owls called St, Aggie’s Orphanage. Who take children and brainwash them. These kids are forced to be active and doing stuff during they day (they are owls) and then at night instead of sleeping their forced to march in circles in a special chamber until they get “moon sickness” Eventually, Soren and three other kids teach themselves how to fly and escape searching legendary Guardians of Ga’Hoole to help them take down the evil orphanage. And that’s literally just the first book.

speedrunning the rest of the books, Soren is reunited with his old house keeper, a blind snake named Mrs. Plithiver, who tells him his parents have been murdered by an owl eugenics cult and his older brother and younger sister are missing. I am not kidding when I say eugenics. They were called The Pure Ones. They had an entire cast system built around around the tyto owl genus, with barn owls being the most “pure” and every other speices being increasingly dehumanized (deowlfied?) and if you weren’t tyoto at all you basically had to die, So any way, Soren finds he didn’t fall, he was push by his brother as an intiatian into the pure ones and rises through the ranks to become their leader. The pure ones and the orphanage decide to team up, the Ga’hoole go undercover, and in book six both organizations are basically reduced to nothing. Also somewhere in there there is something about iron filament putting off enough magnetism to mess with how their brains work in it’s very not good. But finally Soren gets to retire to be a dad.

Book seven we get a new protagonist. Coryn, the kid who was being groomed to be the heir of the now defunct eugenics cult. Despite them being basically nothing anymore his Mom is still raising him like the pure one can make a come back (think Kovu from the lion king 2). But something happens that Coryn decides that this is not for him, and he runs away to find out what the world is actually like. Okay, so these next bits I had to read the wiki to figure out. Coryn has the ability to see the future when staring into fire, he decides he needs to catch a special kind of coal from an active volcano, which he does, and then he takes it to Ga’Hoole to become their king. Also he kills his mom by shoving her into the path of a rabid wolf. There’s a lot happening their the the wiki is not jogging my memory enough to put any of that into context.

books 9-11 are a prequal arc about how coal catching became a thing, the developemnt of back smithing in owl society (those two things have been happening the entire i just haven’t felt the need to bring them up) and how Ga’Hoole was founded to fight Hagsfied, magic demon owl/crow hybrids. And some worldbuilding on how dire wolf society works, That has also been in the background the entire time. Note sure when it was introduced but was really important in Coryn’s section I guess

Back into the present Coryn and the original four owls we followed go looking for a magic book used by an Arch-hagsfied, Meanwhile back at Ga’Hoole, owls start worshiping the special ember Coryn caught like it’s a golden calf. They make up increasingly elaborate rituals and they built a prison overnight for anyone who is blasphemous towards it. The Band + Coryn come home, are horrified tear everything down and the special coal is thrown into a pile of less cool coals but nobody seems to beable to tell the difference and grab it out.

Book 13 a secret owl kingdom is discovered. The band, Coryn, and another owl named Otulissa are guided there for a visit by a blue owl called “The Striga”. Turns out all of the owls there are blue, but some of them have weird long feathers and can’t fly without the assistance of kites. The last remnants of the pure ones apparently stalked our protags to the new kingdom. Striga kills one of them which is a big no no, so he gets banished and our heroes take him home with them.

Ah, from there on out things become very, there is “no war in Ba Sing Se” As Striga gains influence over Coryn. The Band is banished and mass book burning are instituted. The Band tries to figure out how to fix this and discover the hagsfied are not gone, Striga is one of them. And the blue owls from the secret kingdom lived very specific lifestyles to keep the hags from remembering there were evil. It’s why to no bloodshed rule was important, it maybe woke his magic? IDK the wiki is really bad for this book, some of these discoveries were maybe made in the previuos one? And the next book in the wiki is hyper detailed and I tl:dr-ed it because it’s 1am.

Anyway, anything that comes from the secret kingdom is bad new. Coryn’s mother is actually not dead and teams up with them. I guess there’s another war. The Ga’Hoole recruit a bunch of other species to help them fight the combined forces of the hag owls and the pure ones, and some where in that Coryn drops the sacred ember back into the volcano they got he it from.

And the last book is a prequel about Ezylryb. A famous in universe blacksmith.

This post was not supposed to be this long. It was supposed to be a"wow adults let me read a 16 book war series about way eugenics is bad actually and it wasn’t considered to dark for children?” But I ended up summarizing the whole series ‘cause it’s even weirder than I remember. And now this post is too long and I don’t want to get started on the spin-off series “Wolves of the Beyond” which is a six book series about why ableism is bad actually. Wolf society in these books is very ableist even in the owl-centric books it comes up decently often.

So yeah, this was one of my favorite series when I was kid and I think I started reading them when I was seven. I eagerly awaited the next book coming out and I legitimately don’t think my Mom ever checked what they were about. They were just the owl books I liked.

a different anon, but I wanted to make a few notes on that topic you brought up:

Art and writing in general has always been treated differently. Its one of the reasons why its unlikely one could get a good tv series based on Warrior Cats or Animorphs. The books feature a lot of gore, death, and in the case of Animorphs some good ol' psychological body horror, while at the same time being aimed at children.

Its also easier to catch racist creations in artwork, then it is with writing. (Harry potter always had some PRETTY terrible things, such as the Goblin bankers. But the age of people who first read that novel, and the fact that they were in a book, helped obfuscate it for a while.)

Exactly! I think it's fair to say that while writing is the story and the imagery comes secondary, art is the reverse - art is imagery and story comes secondary. The secondary here isn't denoting importance, it is denoting if the reader/watcher? looker? person looking at a piece of art ... has to make the active choice to engage with a work. What is interesting is that both of those series have graphic novel / manga adaptions. It's been far too long since I read the Warriors manga, but I distinctly remember the Animorphs transformation being watered down both from how it was described in the books and the fun cover art of the original series. Which makes sense, because that would be horrifying. I think the old Animorphs show sucked too but I was very young when I had any feasible way of watching that on nickelodeon

But I also think it's fair to say that in order to make fan-spaces more inclusive, fans should really take a look at what they are willing to accept in writing versus in artwork. Not in a "squick" or distaste way, but in a - can this be used to harm others, and how way. OR alternatively, there should be better features to prevent harmful works from being the first thing in front of someone's eyes. Some will say that it already is inclusive, but there is not an end point to that ideal, I don't think. And I have seen plenty of testimony from BIPOC about how spaces are still encouraging racism. After all, much of the backlash against the person running for AO3 board turned into racially charged insults and conspiracy. And I think that while the filter system we have on AO3 is leagues above what we have on fanfic.net - it still has light years to go before it is a perfect system. I believe that at the very least, if we are going to run with the argument that AO3 is an archive or is a library (both options I dislike, btw, I think its a terrible comparison) and that makes it a sacred thing which can't be moderated or have works removed from and must allow ALL work on it so long as it could be considered fan-ish, then we should work on systems that should've been in place from the start. Permanent blacklists, cross-fandom filtering, hiding dead-dove content behind being logged in I think would be a very fair change. Like, look. AO3 is not the first fanfic site I have regularly used. When a my little pony fanfiction site has better content filtering than you (opt-in, rather than opt-out for nsfw, dark/grim dark and something else I believe) then I think there is an issue and a large discussion to be had that isn't just blown away by "oh nooooo censorship!! our lives are ruined and the sky is falling and now they're coming for underage fics but next itll be you queers!" This doesn't solve the problem of -ism content, and I don't think that is a problem that can be solved quite so easily. But at the very least, it'd hide it so those who don't want to read content that is usually tagged for and would really rather think it's not being posted could live their lives. ... Now that I'm thinking about it, there's a few other sites I use that hide certain content from users who are not logged in. They already have the framework to stop guests from commenting... surely that would not be too much of a stretch? (which btw, libaries DO prune books, we DO have policies for the removal of books even before they are challenged. Most archives have policies on what content they allow to be publicly displayed, etc. Most of the people arguing against this have either never worked in a library or are taking an extremely literal take on ao3s name)

Soooo. Yeah. Ahem. This might be a long post but I’m gonna just put a read more after a point.

I redesigned an OC from last year. And this is a major change (I have her old design in one of my art dumps). And it isn’t just that, I did more for her in both writing and character development. I also have more art stuff I did on her past self but gonna put that as a separate post.

Anyhow, this is Mad Jack, the Wild Dog. My Dying Light 30-year-old-plus crazy OC with a sorta like Chloe Frazer, Rachel from Animorphs and Junkrat mash personality, I created for my fanfic, The Descent.

And you can see a year between different styles, levels of art and all that. So I wanna say that no matter how many years, you’ll get even better. You’ll learn new tricks and techniques, new things every day by keeping at your passion. You’ll get better. Any form you did whether simple, stick-man, anything is still a good art because you’re doing it - you’re not stopping because someone says it’s bad, you’re doing it for yourself. And you keep going and seeing the improvements that prove those people, you can create something awesome.

So keep drawing. There’s absolutely no stopping, not even for me. I’m still going to improve myself.

Now then, more on the character. Boring stuff. X’D

SOOOO, the story behind this character creation. I really enjoy Dying Light and I wish the best and all for Techland on their release with Dying Light 2 (and PLEASE GOD BRING THE BROTHER TWINS BACK so that my friend can go “shiiiiit!” X’D I really mean it! He hates them! AHAHAHAHA) and the Following. It was thanks to the ending that got me to start a writing about what happens to Kyle Crane days after the ending. Which means he becomes a sentient zombie in the fic.

What got me into making Mad Jack was two things: one is I realized Crane would need a middleman because you know, he would kill people uncontrollably (and that person needs to be mad enough to even stick with infected Crane) and two, three characters in Dying Light got me thinking of Jack as a common person between them.

So yeah. Fic’s summary is Crane’s back, he meets an ex-kickboxer from the Outskirts of Harran in the middle of a city named Scanderoon and he learns she and a group called the Ravs are trying to find out why the virus recently spiked up with new mutations, affecting the zombies and the survivors, in hopes that the virus isn’t adapting too fast for a cure to beat it.

Now the read-more cuz I don’t want you ppl seeing me as a rambling idiot.

Alright. Let’s get to the meat. So for one, when I first thought of the fic, I was thinking Crane is, of course, the main protagonist but with a few elements: he’s kinda like the Mother (sorta, I need to make his character design now lol) but as a Night Hunter sort and would still be himself. His character development would be on the verge of struggle and insanity between himself and his other self. So I couldn’t see himself being able to fully control himself without someone helping him, regardless how strong his willpower is after going through everything. So he needed someone to keep him in his grips. Jack in my fic is sorta of a red-herring first protagonist but is actually a deuteragonist.

There’s also another point that I wanted to tackle his struggles from the main game, that meeting someone who knew the people he met and learning they’re gone would be the ultimate, powerful and bittersweet development for him. Which is about the three persons I said earlier that is what I based around for Jack.

So the three people were Harris Brecken, Jade and Rahim Aldemir. When I first played the game, I always found it strange how protective Brecken was to both of them which made me wonder if they had a backstory before the outbreak. Sure, many could say, Rahim was one of Brecken’s students or Rais was after the Scorpion before Crane came into the picture. A lot of theories anyone of us could think of. I still felt like there was someone in their lives that crossed paths. The first person I went brainstorming more on was Jade and her kickboxing career.

I made Jack, aka Mad Jack, as Jade’s previous rival and opponent for the last martial arts championship. The Scorpion versus the Wild Dog. The professional 3-year world champion versus the rising star until Jade won and Jack retired. And since their first meeting, the two kids have been friends with her with Jack being that kinda guardian looking out for them. I made Harris be, surprisingly, Jack as that unwanted cousin who you both love and hate a lot. Cough. But with whatever happened to all of them in the past gave me a better structure of why Brecken would care more about the kids if they knew someone who cared about them. Not directly but enough that Brecken wouldn’t tell his cousin they’re gone.

An incident did also cause a bit of friction from Jade’s victory, and that’s something I’ll reveal in my fic later on. And it also did change Jack a lot. The current Jack is more ballistic, unhinged, daring, hungry for a fight and uh...kinda scary the more I describe her now that I think of it. She’s still a good person (sorta) who helps those in need because she’s used to it before, being a legend that inspired people in the past. I even had a small idea that she sings a lullaby to calm the Screamers or infected children before killing them. She thinks of wild ideas that don’t often go the way she wants, a trait Rahim picked up, which is what made him decide to blow up the nest. Go Wild or don’t, which is one thing why those two connected well in the past. Jack’s an unlikely character on the search for why the virus had a kickstarter and being Crane’s hired wingman.

Moreover, it’s a slow trust building between these two. Jack’s philosophy is sorta kinda like Rais and Crane can see that in her. There are also secrets she has that will put that trust to the test but it won’t just be her but Crane testing that trust with his own sins.

What makes this fic so interesting to me the more I write isn’t just Crane’s constant regret that he has to work with this loony woman in a desperate hope of finding that cure and the funny banter development between a sane zombie and a crazy human but the fact Crane’s past will catch up to him and Jack will learn about Jade and Rahim’s fates. And it’s not just Jack herself but others he’ll learn had some connection to someone in Harran. And that moment he can’t keep the lies in anymore and has to tell Jack the truth, that will be something powerful and heartbreaking - that he met a person who knew them and has to give the grim news they’re gone. Because no one had told Jack yet. What’s more, this will reflect on Jack too - that her influence on the two kids was what got them killed like her way of thinking in going big for Rahim and her philosophy in kickboxing got Jade to sacrifice herself.

From there, well, there’s more I have up my sleeve. And hopefully not break these two in the process. :Y

I made Jack for a long of reasons but the one main thing is, I realized after everything Crane’s gone, he really needed someone, an emotional pillar of support for sure. And he hasn’t had that the entire time in Dying Light or the Following - everyone sought him as a hero and never questioned it. Which...I kinda thought was a little sad. So yeah, I made Mad Jack - someone who had fallen from grace and accepted her current self, be that dog of Harran who fully takes in the fact the whole world has gone to hell and has pulled off the chains. Jack’s history, which some parts I won’t go into details, sorta reflects his that she had done a lot and sacrificed a lot before and during the outbreak came. And with Crane being stuck as a monster for good with moments of losing his shit, he’d need support a lot more than ever. The same goes for Jack with her own problems to deal with that Crane decides to help her like he has always done for people in the main game. And how this will all end, I dunno. I know exactly what might be a fitting end for Jack but how all of this will end, that’s something I’m going to have to see towards the end and how Crane would rise back from his descent thanks to Jack. Whether good or bad.

And there you go, Mad Jack. She really had a huge development based on so many people, as well as Crane himself. And I really enjoy pushing that development further into her, to see how far her trials go on her moral and psyche.

Was explaining to Boyfriend that The Chase was my favorite movie as a wee 4th grade Steffie because I had a huge crush on both Charlie Sheen and Kristy Swanson and it’s basically just a movie about a kinda sleazy dude who is still a decent person and a jaded woman who takes no shit going on an adventure in a car and falling in love and he was like “It’s like they wrote it for you specifically.”

Which made me think about the other stuff I was into as a kid and it’s kind of fascinating. Everything I loved as a child has a specific relationship attached to it (almost always romantic in nature) and that’s what I remember enjoying the most and usually why I liked something. Little Steffie reading Judith Mcnaught and Lynn Kurland and Jude Deveraux along with my Animorphs and Dinotopia books. Trying to make sure no one saw the flowers on the cover because they would KNOW.

Watching French Kiss a million times because honestly, is there a more perfect romantic comedy?

Little Steffie getting pissed at the My Girl sequel because HOW DARE YOU STAND WHERE HE STOOD.

Toonami was great because Serena and Darien (Usagi/Mamoru) and Bob and Dot and Bulma and Vegeta. I gave zero fucks about the plot of these shows I just wanted to see what happened with my romances.

Making up stories in my head about a girl getting lost on a hiking trip and falling in love with Sam Gribley from My Side of the Mountain.

My brother and sister asking me to tell them a story about the Rugrats and me making up what was basically an oral fanfic about grownup babies and how Tommy and Lil and Chucky and Phil were totally a thing.

Like, I still, to this day feel that weird woman shame about loving ships and fic and reading romance novels. If someone asks what I’m reading I usually say “a historical novel” or something else non descript. I’ve only recently started admitting to “regular folk” that I read and write fanfiction (which is incredibly freeing btw, you should try it if you do). I only gush about romance novels on here. I don’t recommend them to my IRL friends or family and when they recommend books to me it’s usually nothing I’m interested in because they have no idea that I have like 1000 romance novels in my Kindle library.

I just still feel that stigma, that weird societal assumption that loving romantic relationships means that you’re lonely or desperate or self inserting. And i know now that can’t be true because 4th grade Steffie was none of those things. She was just a kid. She didn’t even really want a boyfriend/girlfriend, she just liked watching and reading about people falling in love.

I find myself thinking about it a lot lately, that stigma, because the books I am writing are becoming less something I just daydream about and think about constantly and more a reality. Words are going on the page, characters I love are coming to life, but in the back of my head I still feel that shame.

“Maybe I shouldn’t tell anyone I wrote this. It’s a romance novel, they’ll think it’s stupid or corny or desperate or sad or me just trying to make money off poorly written ebooks. I won’t even share it on Facebook or tell my family, no one will know.”

Even my boyfriend didn’t really know until I told him. When he asked what I was writing I initially laughed it off and said “a cheesy romance novel, I’m not even gonna put my name on it. It’s just to put something out there and actually finish something” and that was a LIE because I spend most of my day thinking about these characters, about this world and I LOVE it and somehow I’ve been conditioned to hide that, even from my own family.

I’m just trying to appreciate that my entire life I’ve been in love with romance and that there is no shame in wanting to write it. And it’s all I’ve been able to think about since last night. If this was a movie or a show, I think the flashbacks would reveal how silly it is for me to fight it or try to change it. If little Steffie was going to write anything it was always going to be this.

The Worm Reads: Empire of Storms, Ch 28 - 29

I honestly don’t know how it can get worse from here.

So they start the real official meeting that Rowan called in Rolfe’s office, and Aelin wastes no time making me want to rip my eyes out.

[Rowan’s] face—oh, gods, [Aelin]’d missed that harsh, unyielding face

Back to Ratlin (that’s what I’m calling it from now on) splooging I see. Great. Can’t wait for multiple paragraphs of Aelin busting a nut at the thought of Rowan’s peen while SJM insists these books have a plot.

Aelin decided she didn’t particularly give a shit who was watching and rose up on her toes to brush her mouth against [Rowan’s].

UHHH WHAT THE FUCK AELIN. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT MEETINGS THAT’LL DETERMINE IF ROLFE JOINS YOUR WAR EFFORT OR NOT YOU CAN’T JUST - oh forget it, I’ll just sound like a broken record.

[Aelin] just prayed she’d be able to warn Aedion before he ran into his father - who was now sitting two seats down from her, gawking at her as if she had ten heads. Gods, even the expression was like Aedion’s. How hadn’t she noticed that this spring in Wendlyn?

My monkey brain is having feels because I’m sucker for the “child is spitting image of their parent” trope..... bad monkey brain.

“And who would verify the word of a nineteen-year-old princess?” [Aelin] jerked her chin at the wax-sealed tube. “Murtaugh Allsbrook would. He wrote you a nice, long letter about it.” Rolfe picked up the tube, studied it, and chucked it in a neat arc—right into his rubbish bin. The thud echoed through the office.

LMAOOOOOO YOU GO ROLFE!!! SLAY THAT BITCH!!!! I mean considering all the shit Aelin put him through I don’t blame him not wanting to align with her.

Rolfe let out a low laugh. “The talk of young idealists and dreamers.” “The world,” Aelin said, “will be saved and remade by the dreamers, Rolfe.”

See, this is the kind of shit I would be getting excited about if this was a good series. Sounds like something straight of Les Mis. SJM can come up with some good quotes, but if I don’t care about the horrible characters and there’s no plot, why should I give a shit?

Aelin purred, “Do you want gold, Rolfe? Do you want a title? Do you want glory or women or land? Or is it just the bloodlust that drives you?”

Oh my god, SJM is a furry!

Looks like you bid on the wrong horse [Rowan],” Rolfe crooned. He flicked his eyes to Dorian. “What news did you receive?” But that wrong horse [Rowan] cut in smoothly, “There was none. But you’ll be glad to know your spies at the Ocean Rose are certainly doing their job. And that His Majesty is quite an accomplished actor.”

Dorian said coldly, “For a petty grudge, you’d refuse to consider allying with us?” Aelin snorted. “I’d hardly call wrecking his shit-poor city and ships a ‘petty grudge.’”

T-this... this can’t be. I am reading Empire of Storms by SJM, right? Aelin? Having self awareness? In my SJM book? Well, it’s more likely... to never appear again.

Rolfe tells Aelin to go fuck herself and that scene ends, permanently establishing Rolfe as one of the few Well Written Characters. I want him, Darrow, Manon, and Gav to leave this shitty series and go forth to a better one.

Aelin hit the narrow hallway, a wall of muscle at her back and by her side, and faced another dilemma: Aedion.

I smell Aedion daddy issues angst over the horizon. Also, are the ‘walls of muscle’ supposed to be Rowan and... the other Fae??? God SJM stop jerking off to your own characters for 5 minutes please.

Aelin made it all of three steps down the hall when Gavriel said behind her, “Where is he?” Slowly, she looked back. The warrior’s tan face was tight, his eyes full of sorrow and steel.

Damn, I just feel really bad for Gav. Keep in mind I don’t remember why he left Aedion (if it was revealed previously) but I’m hoping SJM actually uses him and makes him a good father, this series is severely lacking in good parental figures.

But Aelin sucked on a tooth

“You don’t get to decide when and where and how you meet him,” Aelin said. “He’s my gods-damned son. I think I do.”

Later Aelin goes to have a chat with Dorian.

“It seems you and I are currently without crowns, thanks to a few bullshit pieces of paper.” Dorian didn’t return her smile. The stairs groaned beneath them as they headed for the second floor. They were almost to the room Dorian had indicated when he said, “Maybe that’s a good thing.”

I mean, Dorian, you seem like a good king who would fight to defend his people. You deserve to be king. But Aelin? Yeah if she was queen her kingdom would be already burnt to the ground, so you’re half right.

They have another meeting where Rowan/Dorian share more information about the witches.

“Manon Blackbeak,” Aedion mused, “would be a valuable ally, if we can get her to turn.”

It was never-ending, [Aelin] supposed while they dined that night on peppered crab and spiced rice.

Reading this as a Cape Bretoner was a mistake. Now I’m hungry for some good seafood..... mmmm, battered fish and chips.....

And [Aelin] was to be given nothing more than obscure commands by long-dead royals to find a way to stop it, nothing more than gods-damned months to rally a force against him.

Gods-damned is a stupid word and SJM should feel bad for abusing it. Aelin decides to make sure Rolfe’s hand maps work and the chapter ends. Next!

Too many animals loitering about the streets at this hour would attract the wrong sort of attention. But Aedion still wished that the shifter was wearing fur or feathers compared to … this.

Greaaat are we gonna get Aedion slut shaming Lysandra? Just what I wanted....

He glanced at the delicate gold chain dangling around Lysandra’s pale throat, tracing its length down the front of her bodice, to where the Amulet of Orynth was now hidden beneath. “Admiring the view?” Aedion snapped his eyes up from the generous swells of her breasts. “Sorry.”

The only reason Lysandra is wearing the Amulet is so Aedion can drool over her boobies. I’m right and you all know it.

“Rowan claimed Rolfe would find the amulet interesting enough to go after it.” “Rowan and Aelin have a tendency to say one thing and mean something else entirely.” Aedion heaved a breath through his nose.

Aedion actually criticizing Aelin?? What the fuck is going on??

Lysandra gets pissy when Aedion points out she’s tired. Not even to condescend towards her, he’s actually concerned, so calm down, Lysandra. We get an ““““explanation”“““ for Lysandra’s shifting powers.

Each shift took something out of Lysandra. The bigger the change, the bigger the animal, the steeper the cost. Aedion had witnessed her morph from butterfly to bumblebee to hummingbird to bat within the span of a few minutes. But going from human to ghost leopard to bear or elk or horse, she’d once demonstrated, took longer between shifts, the magic having to draw up the strength to become that size, to fill the body with all its inherent power.

Better than nothing, but... how does shifting into bigger animals exhaust her but shifting into smaller animals doesn't? Each time the mass of her body is changing, so shouldn’t shifting in general exhaust her? Btw, read Animorphs, it’s a great gritty series that deals with shifting powers way better.

Aedion, however, stiffened slightly as those steps grew closer, and he found himself staring at the son of his great enemy. King, now.

This is confusing as fuck. Stop referring to Dorian as king and use his name so we can understand who Aedion is staring at, thank you.

[Aedion] reined in his scowl as he said to the king, “So, you and Whitethorn didn’t kill each other.” Dorian’s brows scrunched. “He saved my life, nearly got himself burned out to do it. Why should I be anything but grateful?”

Great, now we have to add Rowan splooging that isn’t from Aelin to the list.

He did not resent what she had been, what she portrayed now, only the monsters who had seen the beauty the child would grow into and taken her into that brothel. Aelin had told him what Arobynn had done to the man she’d loved. It was a miracle the shifter could smile at all.

What the fuuuuck why is Aedion portrayed as ~noble and amazing~ for not judging Lysandra based on her past? It’s common human decency to not judge people for things out of their control!! Does SJM not understand how humans operate?

Aedion tells Dorian to fuck off and he leaves, and Lysandra gets understandably irritated by Aedion being a dick.

“He stabbed Aelin. If you knew him as I have, you wouldn’t be so willing to fawn over—”

1. Dorian was, to my memory, being controlled by a demon thing when he stabbed Aelin. He was not in his right mind, and did not have control over himself. Stop holding that over his head, you prick.

2. Aedion you were an asshole too! You tripped Dorian and sent him falling into a thorn bush when you two were walking in HOF. You fucking judgemental asshole, I cannot believe I ever liked you.

Aedion’s like “b-but he was an arrogant kid” and Lysandra, being voice of reason, is like “Um, we all were as kids Aedion, including Aelin” and we litERALLY GET THIS

“I don’t care if he was as arrogant and vain as Aelin, I don’t care if he was enslaved to a demon that took his mind. I look at him and see my family butchered, see those tracks to the river, and hear Quinn tell me that Aelin was drowned and dead.” His breathing was uneven, and his throat burned, but he ignored it.

JESUS TAP DANCING CHRIST. Okay, I’m not saying Aedion isn’t wrong to be weary of Dorian after what happened to his family at the hands of Dorian’s father but this is literally Aedion going “It’s only okay to be a dick if it’s Aelin! Everyone else is a bad ruler and should bow down to her uwu”

FUCKING HELL. I’m willing to bet if it had been Aelin mind controlled, Aedion would be jumping through hoops to justify her actions and convince everyone she couldn’t help herself. Assdion has no character outside of being a dick and kissing up Aelin’s ass. I fucking hat this character almost as much as I hate Aelin.

Aedion braced his palm against the wall again and leaned in to glower in [Lysandra’s] face. She did not yield an inch. “There is an order and rank in our court, lady, and last I checked, you were not number three. You don’t give me commands.”

(...) And the last I checked…” She poked his chest, right between his pectorals, and he could have sworn the tip of a claw pierced the skin beneath his clothes. “You weren’t pathetic enough to enforce rank to hide from being in the wrong.“

*Mortal Kombat voice* FINISH HIM

His blood sparked and thrummed. Aedion found himself taking in the sensuous curves of her mouth, now pressed thin with anger.

YOU TWO ARE ARGUING AND ASSDION SUDDENLY HAS A BONER OVER HER MOUTH. HOW THE FUCK IS THIS HEALTHY IN ANY SHAPE OR FORM. This is nearly as bad as the “kissing a spouse during an argument instead of solving the problem” trope.

By the way, Aedion is demoted to Assdion. Aelin to Alien, and Rowan to Rowboat. I hate these characters so much.

Lysandra backed away a step, too casual to be anything but a calculated move. But Aedion tried—for her sake, he tried to stop thinking about her mouth—

Subject changes and Assdion asks if his father wanted to see him.

If his father had been rude to her—“But I got the sense,” Lysandra quickly clarified as he tensed, “that he is the sort of male who would respect your wishes if you chose not to see him.

*sniffles* Gav deserves to be a good father.

“What would you do?” “I can’t answer that question. My own father…” She shook her head. He knew about that—the shifter-father who had either abandoned her mother or not even known she was pregnant. And then the mother who had thrown Lysandra into the street when she discovered her heritage. “Aedion, what do you want to do? Not for us, not for Terrasen, but for you.”

I would be having feels and starting to ship them had we not had a whole scene dedicated to Assdion being a dick and nearly kissing Lysandra without her consent sooooo

[Aedion] bowed his head a bit, glancing sidelong at the quiet street again. “My whole life has been … not about what I want. I don’t know how to choose those things.”

A little late there to make me feel sympathetic towards Assdion, SJM. You CANNOT have Assdion act as an Aelin worshiping prick and then turn around and expect me to feel bad for him.

Assdion asks Lysandra to come with him to meet his father the next day and then splooges about how much he apparently cares about Lysandra. I don’t care.

From the shadows of his hood, he monitored the alley ahead, the shadows and shafts of moonlight, bracing himself. They’d picked the dead-end alley for a reason. The girl realized her mistake a step too late. “Oh.”

The girl is Rolfe’s barmaid. She immediately leaves and they suspect she’s Rolfe’s spy. Finally, I am free from this god awful chapter.

Thank you so much, you’re so sweet anon! 💜I actually just answered “sugar” in a post, I talked about my first crush who was also my first girlfriend so if ya wanna check that out I posted it right before I’m posting this one!

Matcha (favorite book?): I actually haven’t read a full book in ages and it makes me so sad because I used to love to read but now I can’t focus. But it’s also hard for me to pick a favorite! As a kid, I absolutely loved the Animorphs series and I still have a shit ton of those and plan on getting all of them eventually and giving them to my kids someday to help get them into reading. As I got older I loved the Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices books, though I don’t like Cassandra Clare. I have a sentimental attachment to those characters though because those books were my shit through like all of middle school and high school lol. I also really love To Kill a Mockingbird, honestly, even though it was a book we were forced to read for school. I loved it and bought a brand new copy when I got into college and my old fav English teacher from high school was so happy lol.

Oolong (ideal romantic partner?): Someone I can trust and feel safe with, someone who makes me feel listened to and is very understanding. I have a lot of anxiety and I have depression and sometimes I get moments when I’m just really emotional and it’s important to me that someone could just comfort me and reassure me and talk through things with me without getting mad that I have intrusive thoughts or irrational worries sometimes.

CU AU masterpost 1

I’d like to thank @trans-edith for helping me with the Animorphs AU

this is also only the first masterpost cause I got more Aus but only so much time to type them all out

some are far more fleshed out than others

Animorphs AU

No one asked for these AUs, this one in particular, but I made it anyway. (also special thanks to Trans-Edith for throwing some ideas around with me. I think jailforstupiddumbnerds did too but I forget)

So there’s three different versions of this AU cause I’m trash

AU 1: Main Group- George, Harold, Melvin and Tommy. Billy and Lisa may or may not come in.

The initial group is just George, Harold and Melvin. Tommy finds the cube (?) and doesn’t go down the David Route. He’s more of the Tobias of the group. It starts with George and Harold going home (they’re teens in this) and offering to pick Melvin up. They’re on some kind of semi friendly terms now that they’re older. Melvin notices the ship first and they wind up checking it out. Maybe Melvin is the first to push them towards it because ‘wow science’ meanwhile George and Harold are very tired. The Canon adventures don’t happen cause...that’d just make things too complicated for this story and I’m a bad writer.

Anyway they get dragged into this war and get the morphing powers.

The three of them might have some kind of talk about what to do with all this. Or maybe they go home. Does the actual details matter considering I’m not writing the whole thing out?

Anyway Melvin goes home and experiments at some point. Dunderella (? IDK what the cat’s name was exactly) is his first morph. She (?) is pretty old though but he does some scoping things out. Finds out his parents are Controllers. IDK if this is too close to the beginning to be dropping this? But like he does find out when he’s in cat morph for the first time.

Stuff happens, George takes Harold out to the aquarium to morph dolphin and ‘feel better’ after some war stuff happens that I’m not planning out in full cause I don’t have the time to make it a thing and really are there that many CU fans who like Animorphs who’d want to read it?

Melvin finds out and he’s kinda pissed cause ‘you shouldn’t be using it for personal reasons’ etc. At some point Tommy finds the cube also Billy and Lisa get dragged into the war.

I can see George being the leader, Melvin is like the tactician and the tech guy. They butt heads a lot.

AU 2: It’s the adults who’re fighting the war.

Krupp and a few other teachers IDK who maybe Meaner, Miss Anthrope, Edith and Ribble are coming back from a night out?? They get the powers etc meet the alien

Krupp winds up being the defacto leader cause he’s their boss and stuff. No reason for the other three to be there I just picked three at random. And I don’t actually remember that many teachers to begin with.

Meaner is Krupp’s best friend (A thing I picked up from somewhere as much as I’d hate to admit that I didn’t make it from scratch) Edith doesn’t mingle much with the others but she’s still dating Krupp because it’s my Au and I want Egg Casserole. Krupp is painfully aware of how much of a target he is cause the Yeerks have started to target schools and other public places as a place of recruitment. If they take him they can push more of their infiltration through.

One shots coming: (also yes they all have quotes attributed to the Canon Animorphs. No particular reason)

Kill them then cry over them -Edith’s Chapter (takes place in the cafeteria, she reminisces about how she’s killed, tasted blood etc as a wolf. Something about ‘cycle of life being more painfully obvious and in your face now that you had to play a first hand role in fighting for survival’.

What now, fearless leader?: Krupp’s Chapter (Ben’s in his Office trying to do work but he’s on edge.) TBA

Sub AU- George, Harold, Melvin, Tommy, Krupp and Edith are the main team. Krupp tries to be the leader. Again, I didn’t go too in depth cause I didn’t really feel a need to when I came up with it. I mean I’m never fleshing it out/making it a thing and there’s no demand, so.

Space AU (it’s like The Poseidon Adventure but it’s in space apparently. Just go with it) Again, not super developed but hey it’s not like I’ll ever have the time to write all of these.

USCS [insert number/name here] is a ship containing inhabitants from the Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan region of the US. It is one of several many decades into the future. There’s a safety hull which is to stand as a barrier to the other two shells. The first shell is like the more mechanical stuff and the internal shell is where everyone lives. Things are split up into ‘districts’ by former states. Those districts have their own departments and it kinda goes like that. Miniature city states I guess? But they’re on a ship.

Anyway Krupp isn’t a Principal but he’s still got a high up post for Education in his sector/’state’ (?). ‘Captain’ is his twin brother who plays a hero on tv for the kids/ (IDK if he’ll actually show up in the story but I wanted to write that down). Edith’s just well Edith. They probably have AI doing the food stuff so maybe she works behind the scenes in that department? Anyhow, I want those two to still know each other cause damn it I will put my ship in all my fics if I can cause it’s my ship and my fic and I’ll fite u.

George and Harold are still George and Harold and Melvin’s still Melvin.

Everything’s going as normal, we get a scene or two showing the average day to day lives of the people on the Colony Ship prior to the event. I really want it to open with Krupp being at a meeting of some sort, he doesn’t want to be there but he has to and he’s trying to not fall asleep and slowly dying in his seat and he can feel it. There’s an alert of some sort of breach, the computers say that there’s a chance it could be dangerous and safety protocols should be put into effect. The meeting is canceled, or at least Krupp and a few others are excluded cause this doesn’t concern them/in their area of work. Krupp’s probably like ‘this isn’t what I asked for when I asked to get out of this meeting’ but he’s also worrying cause they’re in space and it will kill them and all.

Edith runs into Krupp asking what’s wrong (or maybe a little later this scene happens) asking if he’s got any information on ‘the breech’ he says he knows about as much as she does. They talk for a bit, worrying.

George, Harold, Melvin and maybe Tommy are in class when the breech happens. Classes are canceled and everyone is alerted to go into the emergency sectors designed for this kind of stuff.

AI AU

This could go a few ways really

The adults are robots. Krupp is an AI in charge of that school who’s gained his own little personality.

He either gets uploaded (?) into an animatronic (?) body (Captain Underpants) or they manage to mess with his programming. This might be an AU where Melvin’s involved I guess? Haven’t really worked it out other than the general premise.

HighSchool boyfriends AU

George and Melvin are dating in HS.

(this is very very rough btw the ideas are there but I can’t articulate them well cause I’ve only got so much time to hash this all out)

George and Harold’s separate classes in the fourth grade was only the beginning of their ‘not being in the same class’ thing that only becomes more pronounced over the years. Especially now in HS. They still live next door and spend every day with each other. George just winds up being in the same class as Melvin and needs to be partners for a project with him. Also Harold’s starting to spend more time with Billy. The two have gotten a little more used to spending time with other people but it’s still a bit alien to them I guess.

Something something George and Melvin talk, maybe about their shared school history I guess.

(I’ll flesh this out later I swear)

The two start dating somehow, I can see them not really expecting to have any sort of feelings/emotions etc for each other outside of frenemy/begrudging project partners.

The actual full fledged romantic feelings don’t show up for a while so I guess it’s a slow burn??

There’s a party at some point, someone gets a little drunk maybe?

I want it to explore their chemistry together and like backstory for Melvin make it work you know?

At the end things wind up breaking off cause George has to be with Lisa cause Cannon (and I may or may not leave it in the air of whether it’s in the same timeline as the single dad AU)

I want the two to see each other less antagonistically and set up possibility of them being friends, all three of them in the future

Animorphs Liveblog #1

I borrowed Animorphs from some friends and liveblogged my thoughts for them. I thought some tumblr folks may enjoy them as well. Animorph content warning for fucked up shit. For kids!

The Invasion 1996 Jake is a Lizard, and this weird CG render of him in a shoe is actually pretty damn good for the time. I forgot about the flipbook corners.

Locking children into animal forms is a special kind of 90's torture I think Rachel/Tobias is a hard thing and good because someone needs to love this kid my word I appreciate Marco though. Hey shit head this is a dumb plan but you're my best friend so I'm in or what fucking ever. Asshole I liked Cassie's little speech about Mother Earth Marco named the band. And Stefan barely talks to Damon in the books, which I think is important, since Stefan has more of a relationship with Elena's friends than his own brother which is another big no-no for that "universal framework". Stefan is Elena's redemption to become a better person in the books (which is why I ship them ha). Not so much Elena being Stefan's object. Ugh I could rant about this forever

Haha. Oh, my beloved Elena. Like, I read the books. They didn’t stick with me too hard. But, yes, TVD was always about Elena. In the books, it was about her growth as a stronger and more compassionate character. Stefan and Damon’s relationship was certainly there - but it was always a subplot.

UNDER ZE CUT: LOTS OF RANTING ABOUT MY BB ELENA, HER IMPORTANCE TO TVD, AND THAT LOSER KLAUS NEVER TOOK STEFAN’S PLACE WHAT. THE. FUCK.

But when it comes to the TV show. Look, Elena’s treatment by the show infuriated me and the conversations in fandom about the sire bond and everything that came with it gave me nightmares. But it never stopped being Elena’s story. Elena, as a character, did not flop. What happened was that Nina left the show and the writers did what they could without her. I’ve barely watched most of TVD after she left, but she was mentioned quite a bit in those last two seasons. I remember lol’ing at fandom being enraged that she wouldn’t just go away and that everyone still loved her in the narrative even if segments of fandom hated her.

TVD didn’t turn from Stefan/Elena(/Damon) to Klaus/Caroline, wtf.

Klaus never took over Stefan’s place. Klaus.. left. He had his own show. Klaus/Caroline was barely mentioned. Loving and being loved by Cami was one one the reasons he changed (the main one being Hope). Vincent comments that he was seeing the man Cami loved when Klaus was willing to sacrifice himself. Kol appealed to Klaus’ love of Cami - and that moved Klaus enough not to take his revenge. Cami was the one who kept him sane while being locked up by Marcel for five years. Klaus may still be infatuated with Caroline and next season may have them ending up together - but that’s not going to change the fact that Klaus/Cami happened and that it mattered.

Stefan’s got the big death. He sacrificed himself to save his brother and the world and his last moments were him getting to say goodbye on his own terms to his soulmate before riding off into the sunset with his best friend. Like, man, I didn’t really like Stefan’s ending. But in terms of narrative importance - you don’t give an ending to that to anyone but a primary character. That’s the opposite of a flop character.

And, hey, let’s get to Caroline. She didn’t overtake Elena’s place. Elena remained central to the text. Elena was the one who got the send off speech for TVD. Stefan and Damon has the last moment, but their moment was all about what Elena was saying - how it’s important to keep living and the fulfilled hope that we can find peace, no matter how bad things got during life. Elena got her dream - to live a human life as fully as possible as an ordinary human doctor while she wrote in her diary about how much Stefan changed everything for her. It tied three big parts of her arc together - Elena forged her own destiny on her own terms, she was the ultimate author of her own story, and loving Stefan taught her how to be alive again.

Caroline’s ending? The school was about Alaric’s arc - he’s struggled to be a responsible caregiver in a world where children are drawn into supernatural hell. Caroline’s involvement was written as an afterthought - taking care of the twins was never as deeply embedded into hear arc as it was with Ric. As for her love interests, apparently the only part of her story that ~truly~ matters -

Well, her husband of ten minutes spent his last moments on earth caressing the woman he called the love of his life, soul mate, other half, and, hey, she happened to his twin doppelganger. Klaus? That stalker asshole whose obsessed with her? A) he’s in love with another woman and b) Caroline’s own protests that Klaus is a loser who needs to get a life and leave her alone. I mean. Yeah. I guess Caroline/Klaus shippers can be happy with a bunch of money and an empty promise. I mean I suppose that’s better than getting a ‘btw I’ll love you forever but it’s most important that I say goodbye to the woman I’ve spent the bulk of my narrative time being in love with’* from Stefan.

But do I think that makes her a flop character? Naw. Caroline looks to be running the school (which, yeah, Ric is too much of a failboat to do that on his own lbr) and will undoubtedly shape the supernatural world for centuries to come. She’s a hot seventeen year old vampire forever and can compel her way into being a rockstar when she gets bored of doing paperwork (I mean, not for long, because lord knows no one will get it right). She got some closure with her mom. Her two best girls are alive, and I think those were always a more powerful things for Caroline than her various lovers.

But, at the end of the day, she didn’t pick her own path. Her own husband’s last moments were with another woman. She ends up cuddling with the man who raped her and has been redeemed through no actual effort of his own. This is not the ending of a character who deemed the most important female character in the narrative, even by standards of ‘female character is only as important as the male character who wants to bang her’. A character living or dying is not how their relative importance to a narrative should be measured.

*There was no reason given for why Stefan saw Elena before he moved onto the afterlife. They writers didn’t even try and come up with a flimsy reason to explain why they were together. Because Stefan/Caroline was an afterthought - Stefan/Elena was The Point.

Do I think my reading here is the only valid one? No. But at least my argument can rest on what actually fucking happened in the story instead of trying to use my reading of Animorphs Was About Jake’s Thirst For Cassie to prove that my ship is the best.

First crush on a fictional character: hmmm.... I’d say Ben Tennyson... I loved him when I was a kid(still do actually...), plus he’s cute. Although, I generally don’t develop much of a romantic attraction to characters...

A book that made you cry: ... I don’t think I have one... I don’t cry very easily... or much at all.. It’s actually really difficult to get me to cry... the only time I remember crying over an actual piece of fiction was the video game, Brothers: a Tale of Two Sons... and a comic I saw online about a boy and his dog in a zombie apocalypse...

Book that was spoiled for me: The Iron Trial (I accidentally read the first 2 chapters of The Copper Gauntlet first, so Call being Constantine was spoiled for me.) Also The Bronze Key (I was on tumblr (specifically verritytorres’s blog) and tho she didn’t say anything specific, I got nervous from what she had posted, went to the wiki, and found out Aaron died..) (TBK didn’t make me cry either, but I did feel my heart break repeatedly for two days straight) Also the Silver Mask’s thing w/ Aaron was sorta spoiled for me (tho I asked for it so...)

First book you fell in love with: It was Give Yourself Goosebumps #1: Escape from the Carnival of Horrors or whichever Animorphs book I read first

First Time you couldn’t stop smiling because of a book or character: Nico Di Angelo from PJO/HOO... my little baby... (even though he’s ridiculously similar to a character I created months before ever finding out Nico existed... like literally the similarities are so strong...)

First Person that really impacted your reading: my dad... but not in a good way... his obsession over the Hunger Games and Divergent and every other YA novel with a female protagonist (and his expectation that I fawn over them just like him) entirely put me off of those books...

A Summary of My Fics in 2018

I found this post lying around and apparently I forgot to post it two weeks ago at the New Year’s when I first made it, so. Here’s a list of the fics I wrote in 2018, with some musings etc.

Animorphs

on a night like this one (1952 words)--A Cassie/Rachel fic written for the Smut Exchange in April, so not a whole lot of plot! I was inspired by a prompt asking for Cassie as the gentle dom, which seemed like such an interesting concept.

falcon falcon, burning bright (2264 words)--Written for Bad Things Happen Bingo in June, a fic about Visser Three capturing Jake. The square I wrote it for was “The Collector”.

Whales and Dolphins and Humans and Yeerks (1416 words)--A Cassie/Aftran fic. Written on one of those probably-too-frequent occasions I opened for femslash prompts. I’d kind of always wanted to write some Caftran? But never got around to it bc I have too many damn fandoms. (...fandamns.)

Avatar: The Last Airbender

...wow, I wrote six fics for this fandom this year. Guess it was more of an ATLA year than I thought.

Largely bc of keircatenation, btw, who sent me a couple very nice prompts.

Kyoshi Wood (This Bird Has Flown) (1726 words)--Dysfunctional Tyzula fic, the first ATLA fic I have ever posted on AO3 (...though I have in the past posted a number on ff.net). Written because I listened to the song “Norwegian Wood” and instantly thought, “Welp, that’s a Tyzula vibe.” The first ATLA fic I wrote this year and it was already July...guess my ATLA content has been all in the past five months.

** every feudal lord needs a loyal handmaiden (13883 words)--Moooore Tyzula! This fic was for the Femslash After Dark Exchange in July which should make it more smutty than it is! But I figure the mature rating is justified by the various dark goings-on. Anyways, this is basically me writing the political intrigue Tyzula fic of my dreams, which is how it got so damn long. I’m quite happy with it.

a snow fight (1660 words)--...and I’m not happy with this one! I was prompted “No holds barred beatdown” for Zuko in Bad Things Happen Bingo and I tried my best but I think I just wasn’t in the right headspace. Came out kind of eh.

changing, losing, staying (3906 words)--Written when I opened for femslash prompts and received the prompt "'I can't afford to lose you too' + Suki/Ty Lee". Postcanon, pretty chill, longer than I expected it to be by the time I was done.

** because it would be a waste (1891 words)--Brief Azutara fic for the prompt of "Azula/Katara, set in a Bad Future AU where Azula is Fire Lord and Katara is her Favorite Prisoner." Written in November.

A Diplomatic Mission and Its Results (2483 words)--I was prompted diplomacy and Suki/Sokka/Toph for some poly event and I did my best! Never really thought about this ship before.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (TV)

** Mhaacta Made Them Do It (3631 words)--Amy/Rosa treat for the Femslash After Dark Exchange, featuring ritual sex and an ELDRITCH ABOMINATION. ...technically a case fic.

Caper Court - Caro Fraser

the pupil of dover court (1543 words)-- I found this book series thru the Yuletide Exchange but only had time (...well, access, really) to read the first book. But I quite liked it and wrote a treat for the person requesting it for the exchange.

Catherine (Web Series)

there's something about catherine (1299 words)-- Another fandom I found through the Yuletide Exchange! This requester wanted some Lynchian Normcore femslash so I did my best to provide. Very easy fandom to get into, btw, webseries is less than an hour long.

Disney

** Amor Vincit Omnia (3231 words)--Maleficent/Philip Stockholm Syndrome fic, written as a treat for the Chocolate Box Exchange.

No one will hurt you (1166 words)--Inspired by a short comic by @disneyfemslashcomics, a Mulan/Jasmine fic featuring hurt/comfort and a nonbinary Mulan.

** # Old and stolen texts (2635 words)--A Belleficent fic I wrote bc idk I like Maleficent and I like Belle and the two seemed like a good ship for Stockholm Syndrome and, obviously, beauty and the beast scenarios. Quite proud of this one :)

Dollhouse

I wrote five fics for this fandom this year but I still think I kind of cooled on it. For one thing, two of those fics were assigned for exchanges--for another, last year, with little to no incentive of that kind, I wrote seven. Still had a good time this year tho.

Also, all of them were pretty dark! We’re not surprised.

** i'll take your mind (to kick around as a toy) (3095 words)--Adelle/Echo fic written for the Trope Bingo Challenge, for a square of “in another man’s shoes”. Longer than I had remembered!

Orientation (3881 words)--Possibly my darkest fic of the year, but I’m sure it’s debatable. Blatant rape/non-con between Bennett Halverson and Caroline Farrell, written for the Nonconathon Exchange.

taking turns (2008 words)--Lighter in the sense that it’s melancholy rather than dark as hell. A Claire and Topher fic written for the Remix Revival event, remixing a fic I greatly enjoyed.

# january to december, do you want to be a member? (1338 words)--Adelle/Echo fic where Adelle uses Echo as a doll. Kind of a filler fic, I’d always wanted to play with the idea but couldn’t get super into it. Ehh.

# someone to watch over me (1217 words)--Claire-centered fic with not a whole ton of plot. Again, kind of a filler fic. This is one reason I have to say I was not so into this fandom this year--2/5 fics being filler isn’t a great ratio.

Egil Saga - Faun (Music Video)

No man shall scratch runes. (1273 words)--Written as a treat for the Yuletide Exchange. H/C and some very basic worldbuilding for a weird, surreal music video. Not much else to say. Debatably femslash.

Flesh and Bone (TV)

Danseuse and Partner (1172 words)-- I got paired with someone for the Chocolate Box Exchange who requested soft and fluffy fic for Cassie/Jake, but at that time I had no fluffy Animorph feelings so I binge-watched this miniseries so I could fill their other request, which was domestic, relatively functional incest fic. Idk if I succeeded, it was an interesting prompt but I didn’t ship it. I was more vibing with the series’ femslash potential. But I never got around to writing for that.

Gattaca (1997)

Gattaca fandom, I swear I still love you! I’m just less depressed this year! Which, to be honest, IS A GOOD THING! but not very conducive to the kind of Gattaca fic I used to write lols.

** Peppermint and Vanilla (1492 words)--H/C Eugne & Vincent fic written when @trifoyle prompted me the title. I’m quite happy with it.

Of Physicists and Janitors (35780 words)-- I only wrote like a chapter of this in 2018. God. I really need to finish this. Also AO3 thinks I wrote the whole thing this year which just is not true.

Allergies (2374 words)-- Fic I started like two years ago and only finished now. Mostly Vincent-centric. Again, inspired by conversation with @trifoyle

The Pink Streak (1644 words)-- Wendy/Pacifica fic written as a treat for the Chocolate Box Exchange.

Grease (1978)

beauty queen, my best girl (1018 words)-- Frenchy/Sandy fic, written as a treat for the Chocolate Box Exchange.

Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald

** A Mistress's Mistress (2178 words)-- Jordan/Myrtle fic written as a treat for the Chocolate Box Exchange. Because Myrtle deserves better, okay?

** Santa Barbara (2691 words)-- Pre-canon Jordan/Daisy fic written for a prompt of "Jordan manipulating Daisy (and Daisy kind of going along with it)." Probably my favorite Jordaisy fic I’ve written to date.

Careless Wanderers (2380 words)-- Post-canon Jordan/Daisy fic written for Trope Bingo for the “Road Trip” square.

White Lies of a Colored Past (1820 words)-- About two years ago I wrote down the idea of Gatsby incorporating Nick into his shady, multiple-choice backstory. And then this year I finally wrote it. ...probably would have been better two years ago but I don’t not like it.

** for children's consumption (3143 words)-- Someone prompted me Nick Carraway and abuse/neglect for Bad Things Happen Bingo, and I wrote this odd little gen fic drawing parallels between his past and Pammy’s present. I’m quite pleased with it.

Messenger of the Atreides (2035 words)-- I wrote this as a pinch hit for the Chocolate Box Exchange. Shipping Odysseus/Achilles from the Iliad. The vaguest smut I ever did write.
