I found this while playing dying light 2 stay human
Tumblr media
Memento mori literally means "Remember you must die". The early Puritan settlers were particularly aware of death and fearful of what it might mean, so a Puritan tombstone will often display a memento mori intended for the living. These death's-heads or skulls may strike us as ghoulish, but they helped keep the living on the straight and narrow for fear of eternal punishment. In earlier centuries, an educated European might place an actual skull on his desk to keep the idea of death always present in his mind and given the fact that in the game you are constantly chased by death towards an end goal it seems fitting.

I wish Techland would do DLCs exploring characters like Hakon, Lawan and Frank. Similar to the metro games were the DLCs are centered around side characters own past struggles and future, which gives them alot of character development outside the main story. Just imagine playing as a Frank during the failed nightrunner VNC tower mission and seeing all his close friends die.

Is this DLC2 to Dying Light 2 Stay Human?
It initially started during our work on DLC2, but a story leak made us rethink the narrative, the scope and the general approach. When we decided to make Kyle Crane the hero of Dying Light: The Beast, it gave us a powerful boost of inspiration. Like many of you, we really wanted to bring Kyle back to do justice to the hero of Harran. That's how Dying Light: The Beast was born - a self contained zombie survival adventure offering a new setting, new set of gameplay features and new story, culminating in a standalone, 18+ hours adventure.
I have Dying Light 2 Stay Human: Ultimate Edition and I was promised a story DLC as part of the package - will I get it?
We are grateful to our community that supported us since the launch of Dying Light 2 and has been patient with us. To show our appreciation, we will be offering Dying Light: The Beast at no extra cost to all owners of the Dying Light 2 Ultimate Edition. We hope that upgrading your experience from a story DLC to a full standalone game will make up for the time you have been waiting.
Does it mean I can get Dying Light: The Beast via buying Dying Light Stay Human Ultimate Edition or Ultimate Upgrade?
Yes, we will be offering Dying Light: The Beast at no extra cost to all owners of the Dying Light 2 Stay Human Ultimate Edition. However, we will stop selling Ultimate Edition and Ultimate Upgrade by September 30, 2024. Everyone who owns Ultimate Edition by that time will be eligible to receive Dying Light: The Beast at no extra cost.
What is the launch date and how much will the game cost?
While we haven’t announced the release date and price just yet, we’re approaching the point of content completion and will share this info as soon as we are ready.
Who do I play as?
You play as Kyle Crane, the man whose selflessness during the initial virus outbreak saved many from a fate worse than death. But if you’ve never played Dying Light before, this standalone adventure presents a great introduction to the franchise.
How big is the game?
Our goal has been to find the sweet spot between it being too short and too long so instead of overwhelming players with scale, it will offer a rich, concentrated gaming experience - like a double shot of espresso! Right now we are looking at around 18-20 hours of thrilling survival action.
What new gameplay features will we experience in Dying Light: The Beast?
In Dying Light: The Beast you play as Kyle Crane, the long-lost hero from the original Dying Light game. You explore a tightly crafted new open world set in the countryside - with lots of variety and new 4x4 vehicles to expand movement options. We’re also adding new and deadlier enemies and new weapons.
Where does the game take place?
Dying Light: The Beast is a thrilling zombie survival adventure set in a rural region. The open world of Dying Light: The Beast is different to the urban setting of Villedor. The valley of Castor Woods is home to a national park with mountains, forests, fields and swamps, small villages, industrial complexes and the touristy Old Town, which is perfect for parkour. The new location is densely packed and tightly-crafted with lots of mysteries to uncover.
On which platforms will the game be available?
The game will be released on PC, current and old gen consoles - Xbox and Playstation.
When, in relation to Dying Light 1 and Dying Light 2 Stay Human, DL: The Beast is happening?
The story of the original Dying Light took place in 2015, while Dying Light 2 was set in 2036. The story of the Dying Light: The Beast begins right after the events of Dying Light 2 Stay Human, which is over 20 years after the events of the original Dying Light.
How does Dying Light: The Beast differ from Dying Light 1 and Dying Light 2 Stay Human?
In Dying Light: The Beast, there are many new elements, including a new countryside-environment that we haven’t seen in any Dying Light games before. The game also brings a bunch of new gameplay features, like 4x4 vehicles and new weapons. Although Dying Light: The Beast will feel unique, you will find that the core elements that make Dying Light special are still present.
Will Dying Light: The Beast have achievements?
Yes, Dying Light: The Beast is a new standalone game and will offer a set of its own achievements.

Dead Island: Definitive Edition (PS4)
Developed/Published by: Techland / Deep Silver Released: 31/05/2016 Completed: 10/11/2023 Completion: Finished It. Trophies / Achievements: 41%
After playing through Until Dawn and Dead Space I wanted to keep the Halloween theme going, and so, somewhat randomly (cough saw it was installed cough) chose to play this, and didn’t actually realize until I sat down that I went from Dead Space to Dead Island like I’m about to play a Dead Rising next or something (I’m not.)
This was a daft choice for the Halloween theme; When I think Halloween I think ghosts, witches, Draculas and that, probably in a spooky house, maybe doing the monster mash. Zombies on a tropical island? It just feels… unseasonal.
Of course, and to this game’s detriment, you only really enjoy the island resort vibes for really a couple of hours of this game, before you’re shunted into a pretty generic town with (boo!) lengthy sewers. (I suppose you do go to a jungle after that for a bit.) It’s all a bit emblematic of the game, which has a fairly enjoyable loot shooter-adjacent design (you don’t do a lot of shooting, mostly hitting zombies in the head with blunt objects)  but seems to suffer unforced errors all over the shop, some of which are, at best, very problematic???
I’ll start with that, actually. Developed by Techland, a Polish company, the game has incredible “I’ve never met a Black person” energy. I played through it as the rapper Sam B and he’s an absolutely brutal stereotype that makes Barrett in Final Fantasy VII look like a nuanced portrayal. It gets worse, however, as once you get to the jungle you start to deal with the local indigenous population, who are portrayed… just imagine all the stereotypes. Yeah, all of ‘em.
The narrative, overall, is a pretty unpleasant mess, with the male characters hideously unsympathetic (some really dark stuff is implied to have happened to one of the female characters, and the male characters’ response is actively hateful.) It makes the game literally impossible to recommend, and being originally developed in 2011 doesn’t feel like much of an excuse.
(Interestingly, the developers of Dead Island 2 worked with a diversity council to try and avoid these kind of problems, which would make me think “good on Techland” but Dead Island 2 was developed by entirely different developers and went through development hell for eight years. So that’s, uh, that.)
It’s all so… unnecessary, as well. As a loot shooter-like (is that a genre?) it’s not exactly like you’re there for any sort of story other than “survive” with most of the pleasure in getting bigger and better blunt objects to hit zombies in the head with. Even here, taken alone, it’s a bit hard to recommend. Combat is clumsy (I never felt satisfied in my understanding of either my or enemy attack distances) the loot is often insanely underwhelming, and the upgrade trees are a mess (there’s an entire tree for your “fury” power that I doubt any player of this game ever upgrades ever.) It almost feels like a shame losing interest in this before you’re halfway done (before the story starts getting really stupid) because the first hours are oddly well paced; the introduce human enemies with guns what felt like right at the point where you’d be getting bored with just hitting zombies, and it’s sad that it’s not long after that you find yourself stuck in boring, samey sewers for what feels like forever, and then you’re just stuck chewing through this until you finish it by defeating a hilariously underwhelming final boss.
Anyway. I played this so you don’t have to.
Will I ever play it again? I think the concept is strong, actually, zombie loot shooter-like, so part of me is like “Maybe Dead Island 2 is ok? I mean… different team! Diversity council!” but this was just so underwhelming I’m sure if I want a loot shooter-like I can do better somewhere else. And I’m definitely not interested in Techland’s own follow up, Dying Light.
Final Thought: Oh hang on, I just noticed I own Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, and that’s a Techland joint. But I own it, so I’ll have to play it. A game set in the old west? That can’t be problematic at all! I’m sure it’ll be fine!
