Why you should watch RWBY
TL;DR:
Summary: RWBY is an epic fantasy with themes like found family, the struggle to remain hopeful, the younger generation growing up, villain redemption, and systemic evils.
Strengths: RWBY has unique and memorable characters. The show is smart. It has excellent cinematography and animation. It has representation. It tackles hard topics. It’s got incredible music and it’s free on RT’s website.
Weaknesses: RWBY has some early growing pains, specifically volume 2’s finale, as well as budget and polish. Later on, volume 4 is weaker than the rest. Volume 8's finale is extremely distressing for a lot of viewers (and we haven't seen the follow up to those events yet). The fandom can be bad at times.
Misinformation: The early volumes being bad, the racism plot line, and the animation (not the same as “budget and polish”) are not as bad as you may have heard from YouTube.

(I did my best to make this spoiler-free. When there are spoilers, they’re worded ambiguously enough that someone new to the show would never guess what’s going to happen just by reading this.)
What to expect
The world of Remnant is filled with monsters called the creatures of Grimm. Warriors called Huntsmen and Huntresses defend humanity. Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang go to school to become the next generation of heroes. Together they make Team RWBY (pronounced, “Ruby”)! Joining them is team JNPR (“Juniper”), made up of Jaune, Nora, Pyrrha, and Ren. But evils even more dangerous than the Grimm are ready to make their move, and school quickly becomes an afterthought…
(I mention these next two topics specifically bc they can immediately turn someone away based on bad expectations.) There is a fantasy school setting, but RWBY is not a show about school. School topics are not a dominant idea: it seems to resemble a setting like Harry Potter, but the actual focus of the show rarely touches on things like classes or homework or tests, and we quickly move on. There is romance and it has a role in the plot, but RWBY is not a romance show. On the scale of romance in FMAB to She-Ra, RWBY falls somewhere in the middle.
What is RWBY about, then? RWBY is like an epic fantasy or high fantasy, despite first appearances. Perhaps not every genre convention is followed, but at its core, RWBY is about an epic struggle of good and evil.
RWBY contains themes such as found family, the struggle to remain hopeful, the younger generation growing up, villain redemption, and systemic evils.
Strengths of the show
The characters are unique and memorable. One of the cool things is that they all draw inspiration from a real life fairy tale, myth, or something else. They designs are all top notch. One character who died with extremely little screen time even got so much fandom love, they included the character in a mid-hiatus short later. The characters have unique weapons, too; in the world of Remnant, a weapon is an extension of ones’ soul, and they reflect the variety of their owners. They’re also just plain cool; Monty was famous for following the “Rule of Cool.” And their individual stories are all compelling and interesting.
The show is smart. As a fandom, we generally pick up on the narrative hints the creators are dropping. And our predictions usually come true, but not in a way that makes the show predictable and boring. We very rarely guess exactly what will happen, but we have some similar idea of it. It’s just excellent foreshadowing.
RWBY also likes to play with tropes, as an extension of this. Often it will challenge them, or subvert expectations. In other cases, RWBY uses tropes to avoid showing us what we already know will happen. This occurs in both characters and plot. For example…
SLIGHT SPOILERS FOR VOLUME ONE FOR THE REST OF THIS PARAGRAPH: Jaune’s entire character arc is about trying to be the anime protagonist, and learning that he doesn’t have to do things alone, and it’s ok to be a support main. The show sets up the narrative in a way that looks like, oh of course the direction it will go is him becoming the main character, but then it destroys toxic masculinity instead.
Our characters are smart, too. Plot-induced stupidity generally doesn’t happen. (A few big mistakes or errors in this regard aren’t actually the fault of the narrative, either, but animation and miscommunication and failure to execute. And those aren’t common.) It goes beyond just “not being dumb,” however. The villains’ plans are incredibly clever, and our heroes sometimes even guess at the usual “plot twists.”
The cinematography is just incredible. There are numerous freeze frames with extreme attention to detail that reveal character motivations or arcs or foreshadowing, there are many effective cuts and moving parts, there are soooo many parallels and callbacks, and visual cues such as lighting and color all are used appropriately to convey emotion and assist the narrative. It is one of the biggest overlooked strengths of the show, imo, simply because a lot of people in the fandom don’t notice these things as much for whatever reason, or else don’t give as much praise about them.
The animation is extremely good as well. Budget issues and technology issues aside (which means a lack of polish), the actual animation? The fight choreography, and all the other parts of animation that aren’t just “expensive CGI” are all wonderful. You can have very shiny, polished turds after all, and RWBY is like the opposite: not very polished, especially early on, but very well animated. All the trailers, volume 1 episode 8, the volume 1 finale, the volume 2 penultimate episode, and basically everything else hold up extremely well even today. If anything, the worst fight animation was in volumes 4 and 5 because of Maya growing pains, and those are an example of being more polished, but not necessarily better animated. Animation of faces has always been good, animation of characters has always felt lively. Aside from a few small actual hiccups (that one person running across rooftops for instance), it’s well done.
There are LGBTQ+ characters. The treatment of one of the recent trans characters, in volume 8, was nothing short of amazing. They worked with a VA who was trans. The moment of canon confirmation was important to the character for backstory, because of course that affects the character’s life, but not the only important thing about the character. The representation is not in-your-face or pandering. And there is a split of representation among the main cast and the minor characters, with promises of more to come (notably they’ve said they’re working on more mlm for future volumes, too).
RWBY is not afraid to tackle hard topics. It deals with things like mental illness, systematic racism, and cycles of abuse. It’s not because the show is trying to earn “gritty and dark” points, it’s because those are some of the topics that real people have to struggle with as well. And the show handles most or all of them very well, in a way that shows respect and an honest attempt to depict these things as best they can. (NOTE ABOUT VOLUME 8: THERE IS A VERY DIFFUCLT CONVERSATION CURRENTLY HAPPENING. I am on the side of, let’s wait and see what happens next because the story isn’t over, so we haven’t really seen the fall out. But I understand why this paragraph feels really difficult to agree with if you've seen the volume 8 finale. I trust the track record of the rest of the show, personally.)
As an example, the show has a theme that villains are rarely evil just because. A lot of villains choose to do bad things because they were hurt in some way. Some lived in poverty; some were hurt by racism; many of them are victims of abuse. But the show doesn’t make excuses for them. It’s possible to be both sympathetic and still choose evil over and over again (that’s called tragic). The ones who eventually do try to do good again are not always forgiven, either.
The music is amazing. I can probably count on my hands the number of times I’ve heard someone say otherwise, which is astonishing when you consider this fandom.
It’s also free on RT’s website. (A paid, “FIRST” subscription removes ads and lets you see new episodes one week early, but they all eventually release for free.)
Weaknesses of the show
Early volumes’ growing pains exist, much like most or all other shows. (Even some of the greatest were not immune to this, like ATLA.) In this case, however, it’s a little bit rougher. A large reason why is that this was kind of the first big thing from RT to ever come out. If you remember back almost a decade ago, their only other big thing at the time was RvB, which was machinima. They pretty much started from scratch with everything, from assets to VAs to animation to writing. Imagine if a random twitch streamer, like Ninja (idk who’s popular these days) said one day, “OK let me just direct something that’s intended to be the next great movie series of all time, like Star Wars, with a $4 bill and an iPhone camera.” Then went out and actually made something. Of course it would be rough…but then it turns out the movie is actually really good. And then you get to watch over the next several years as everything gets better and better until it’s honest-to-god comparable to the MCU. That’s kind of what happened with RWBY.
One specific growing pain was the volume 2 finale. Pretty much everything else up until that point, I love about the show. But the finale just fails to deliver on the build up of tension from other episodes. Some of it is because of later plot developments that we didn’t know at the time; some of it is because of just not great writing; some of it is because of just not great animation; and yes, some of it is budget. Regardless, it’s a low point for the show.
Speaking of, the budget for the early volumes is super small. The infamous volume one shadow people, the infamous person jumping across the rooftops in volume two, and just production quality isn’t high compared to a major release from some established studio. These are real weaknesses of the show that for some people, make it unwatchable, and if that’s you, that’s ok.
One last weakness of the show, the screen time per episode, especially early on, is NOT a full 20 minutes like you may expect of an anime (or anime-inspired-western-media, for those of you who will die on the “RWBY is not an anime” hill). This is a trend that has stuck with the show, a shorter run time per episode, for generally the entire lifetime. On one hand, it means it’s a little less daunting to catch up or rewatch than the number of episodes might imply. On the other, early on, some episodes have a little weird pacing. It also means the writing had to adjust for this, so while RWBY got really good at telling a story within a shorter amount of time, there’s also challenges with that too. Perhaps one of the notable ones is the pacing, with slower moments sometimes feeling like it takes up too much screen time, or not enough. Volume 4 was a particular struggle for the crew, both because they switched animation engines and also for the story.
Common complaints that I don’t agree with
I don’t agree that the early volumes were actually bad overall. Growing pains, yes, but not bad. I attribute that complaint to overly focusing on one character’s storyline, back when it wasn’t clear there was so much more to come and before people realized the show would challenge the tropes instead of falling into them. It’s pretty much just volume 1 when people say this anyway, most of them I’ve heard admit that volume 2 was a lot better (except the finale) and almost everyone loves volume 3. And looking back on it, I do think volume 1 holds up.
Tying into this, the racism plot line is another common complaint. I don’t think it’s actually executed quite that badly. I think it makes sense for there to be regional differences in the amount of racism we see, it just so happened that we only saw a very small and isolated environment, Beacon, for much of the early volumes. (Incidentally, that’s actually similar the environment I myself grew up in.) It’s not perfect, though. But there’s no doubt that the later volumes do a better job portraying this. Again, I attribute it mostly to people not knowing how long the show would run for at the time, so of course if that’s all we saw, it would’ve been bad. But it’s not. I have a lot of respect for Miles and Kerry for even attempting to handle the racism topic in the first place. And for the faults that DO exist in this plot line, I credit them for learning and growing past that too, and doing better in later volumes.
The animation is not bad. I’ve already touched on that earlier, but people confuse “budget and polish” with “animation.” Give me RWBY any day over Michael Bay’s Transformers: no matter how much polish those robots have, they’re still a confusing mess to try and follow. And the polish isn’t even an issue once we get past the growing pains of Maya and get a bigger budget, because wow does this show look good now.
Between these three complaints I hear about often, I think those are the biggest ones. And they’re all generally done in bad faith, based not on just those but on other more provocative statements people also make with them. That’s part of my issue with the fandom, specifically the vocal but small parts of the fandom, because they’re just repeating these things from early days that aren’t true. But YouTubers gotta get those rage and hate clicks somehow, right? Unfortunately it discredits the show a lot and influences other people’s opinions into not giving it a fair chance, because it’s become a narrative of “RWBY IS BAD” when they all won’t shut up about it. So yeah, fandom can be bad, join at your own discretion. (Of course, all fandoms have annoying parts, and my interactions with the fandom have been good overall, otherwise.)
Onto other complaints, some say the cast is bloated. I don’t agree, but I don’t think this one is in bad faith. I think we get the important characters as much screen time as we can, and the minor characters don’t actually detract from that; one of the differences between good minor characters and bad ones, is that bad ones take up too much time. RWBY has a ton of characters but many of the minor ones don’t actually take up too much time. So it appears bloated, but actually I don’t think it is.
Finally, a small word on the no-no topics. Adam, and Monty. Adam is like the champion of the Monty topic. Which essentially boils down to “Miles and Kerry are ruining Monty’s vision for the show.” Toxic fandom is truly awful and I have no respect for anyone who says anything like that. Shame on all of you. This isn’t really anything negative about the show, but the fandom, and tbf all fandoms have toxic parts. But toxic fandom can be a real and valid reason to not watch a show. Thankfully they seem fewer in number these days, but I think they’ve evolved into hiding behind other characters or topics, so you know. Beware. Again, it's not too hard to avoid them or block them, and my interactions otherwise with most fans have been good.

Book Rec’s
Going to try and add a lot of less known books that are amazing and not enough people talk about, this would be too long if I talked about each one in depth, so I am going to leave my fav quotes as that tends to give me a feel for books and whether I will like them and I will link the GR page for more info! Happy reading:)
Fantasy Vibes
From Blood And Ash by Jennifer L Armentrout (CLICK THIS TOO)
“Death is like an old friend who pays a visit, sometimes when it’s least expected and other times when you’re waiting for her. It’s neither the first nor the last time she’ll pay a visit, but that doesn’t make any death less harsh or unforgiving.”
“Fear and bravery are often one and the same. It either makes you a warrior or a coward. The only difference is the person it resides inside.”
“You're an absolutely stunning, murderous little creature.”
Storm And Fury by Jennifer L Armentrout
“What are you going to do if it does get worse?” he asked. “Maybe I’ll get myself a seeing-eye gargoyle.”
(HONESTLY BADASS GARGOYLES. SO UNIQUE AND AWESOME)
Demons At Deadnight by A&E Kirk
“I launched into a graceful ninja-like front roll, then stood my ground to face the monstrous heathen, fearless in my determination to vanquish the deadly foe.
Nah, just kidding. I bolted, discretion being the better part of not getting dead.”
“We are killers,” Matthias said. Bad news.
“Not girls. We don’t kill girls.” Good news.
“She’s no girl.” Insulting news?
“What? Of course she’s a girl.”
“Want me to check?”
“Shut up, Blake,” the rest of them chorused.”
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
“If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse.”
“If you hurt me, I wouldn't cry. I would hurt you back.”
“I am going to keep on defying you. I am going to shame you with my defiance. You remind me that I am a mere mortal and you are a prince of Faerie. Well, let me remind you that means you have much to lose and I have nothing. You may win in the end, you may ensorcell me and hurt me and humiliate me, but I will make sure you lose everything I can take from you on the way down. I promise you this is the least of what I can do.”
MM Romance
Him by Sabrina Bowen & Elle Kennedy
“Our mouths fit together so perfectly. Every time we kiss, I fall even more in love with him, and it has nothing to do with sex or lust. It's him. His closeness and his scent and the way he soothes me.”
“I…” He clears his throat. “I’d let you do it, though.” My hand freezes in his hair. “You would?” Wes nods. “I’d let you do anything to me, Canning.”
Misfits by Garrett Leigh (Poly romance, its just so perfect ala herongraystairs!)
“Learn something. Read a book. Explore someone. Anger is just a hole where your life could be.”
In The Absence Of Light by Adrienne Wilder
“The light is a funny thing, Grant. We think it shows us what we need to see, but in reality, it blinds us. That’s why I brought you here. I wanted you to see me.”
“Morgan may be autistic, but he is a normal man with a mental condition, not a mental condition who is a man.”
HOneStly JUST READ IT
The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic
“It’s not the world that’s cruel. It’s the people in it.”
“I'm not a math problem." "But I'll still solve you."
“Is your learning curve a horizontal line?”
“Who said 'please' that made you hate the word so much?" Andrew gazed at him in silence for a minute. "I did.”
“I didn't think I was a personal problem. You hate me, remember?" "Every inch of you," Andrew said. "That doesn't mean I wouldn't blow you."
EVERY QOUTE IS ICONIC TBH
Vampires, Angels & Greek Mythology
Bloodlines by Michelle Read
“The greatest changes in history have come when people were able to shake off what others told them to do.”
“Takes a lot of tries before you hit perfection." He paused to reconsider that. "Well, except for my parents. They got it on the first try."
“No, thank you," said Adrian. "These hands don't sully themselves with fighting.”

“You ask a lot of questions for a dead woman.” “What can I say? I prefer to die well-informed.”

“There is no shame in scars, Ismae.”

“Everyone has something dark in their past. I suppose it's our job to overcome it. And if we can’t overcome it, then all we can do is make the most of it.”

“I will have you without armor, Kaz Brekker. Or I will not have you at all.
“The heart is an arrow. It demands aim to land true.”
“Kaz leaned back. "What's the easiest way to steal a man's wallet?" "Knife to the throat?" asked Inej. "Gun to the back?" said Jesper. "Poison in his cup?" suggested Nina. "You're all horrible," said Matthias.”
The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson
“It can take years to mold a dream. It takes only a fraction of a second for it to be shattered.”
“Taking another life, she had whispered, even a guilty one, should never be easy. If it were, we'd be little more than animals.”
“Maybe there was no one way to define it. Maybe there were as many shades of love as the blues of the sky,”
“We all have our different skills. You’re patient to a fault, which sometimes doesn’t work to your advantage. I, on the other hand, have the patience of a wet cat. Only on rare occasions does that come in handy.”
“Maybe there were a hundred different ways to fall in love.”
Circus Vibes
Caraval by Stephanie Garber
“Every person has the power to change their fate if they are brave enough to fight for what they desire more than anything.”
“She imagined loving him would feel like falling in love with darkness, frightening and consuming yet utterly beautiful when the stars came out.”
“Some things are worth pursuit regardless of the cost.”
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
“You may tell a tale that takes up residence in someone's soul, becomes their blood and self and purpose. That tale will move them and drive them and who knows that they might do because of it, because of your words. That is your role, your gift.”
“Secrets have power. And that power diminishes when they are shared, so they are best kept and kept well. Sharing secrets, real secrets, important ones, with even one other person, will change them. Writing them down is worse, because who can tell how many eyes might see them inscribed on paper, no matter how careful you might be with it. So it's really best to keep your secrets when you have them, for their own good, as well as yours.”
Six of Hearts by L.H Cosway
“Note to self: Never try to out-trick a trickster.”

“We all have thoughts that we would never, ever vocalise. And people who say they don’t are liars.”
“I once read that people who have imaginary friends never reach out to touch them. There’s some part of their brain that subconsciously knows it will break the spell. That’s what it feels like with Jay.”
Amour Amour by Krista & Becca Richie
“We all traverse in and out of people’s worlds, leaving footprints. Some larger, some smaller, but there is always a mark. We can’t sweep it away.”
“Life is a rollercoaster with no volunteers. We’re all forced to take a seat and ride it out.
“I’m average. I’ve been average most of my life, but there are moments where I feel extraordinary. Invincible. Able to conquer any fear and step outside any box. There is no illusion, no fantasy. I can climb a forty-foot pole. I can fly eighty-feet in the air. I can be taller than tall. It’s a dream that I’m living. Every day. With him.”
More M/M Romance
The Song Of Achilles by Madeline Miller
“I could recognize him by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.”
“And perhaps it is the greater grief, after all, to be left on earth when another is gone.”
“He is a weapon, a killer. Do not forget it. You can use a spear as a walking stick, but that will not change its nature.”
“He is half of my soul, as the poets say.”
Axel’s Pup by Kim Dare (Shifter Romance & BDSM FYI if thats not your jazz)
"I want to screw you, and tie you up, and make you writhe from-you know all that. But I want so much more. I want the whole thing, not just a quick scene. I want twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. I want you to be mine. I won't take anything less."
Aristotle And Dante Discover The Secrets Of The Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
“In your dream. You were looking for me.""I'm always looking for you,"
“He was funny and focused and fierce. I mean the guy could be fierce. And there wasn’t anything mean about him. I didn’t understand how you could live in a mean world and not have any of that meanness rub off on you.”
“He looked like an angel. And all I wanted to do was put my fist through his jaw. I couldn't stand my own cruelty.”
“One of the secrets of the universe was that our instincts were sometimes stronger than our minds. Another secret of the universe: Sometimes pain was like a storm that came out of nowhere.”
Shattered Glass by Dani Alexander
"Tell me something good about your life," I whispered, needing to hear that he wasn't as broken as I thought him to be.[...]"You." It was so quiet I almost didn't hear it.”
“Is he my competition?” I asked. “Everyone is your competition.” Peter lifted his hand to his eyes and began lowering it incrementally. “It goes normal human beings, crazies, republicans, my hand, imaginary characters, corpses and then, in a moment of lustful psychosis, you.” By the time he was done, his hand was below the table.
Romance
Kiss The Sky by Krista & Becca Richie
“You’re not a pit stop. You’re my finish line. There’s no one after you.”
“People hope to touch the sky. I dream of kissing it.”
“I love the way he’s staring at me. It makes me feel more than just beautiful. I feel like I’m his. Like no one else could possibly compare to me. He doesn’t even have to say the words. I see it in his eyes. I can practically read it in his mind.”
“I’ve wanted so many things in life,” he says softly, “but you’re the one that has meant the most to me.”
Translation: I love you.”

“The right woman for you wouldn't want you to change anything about your life. She wouldn't rock your boat, she'd jump right in and sail it with you.”
“It breaks my heart the way young girls pick themselves over, never thinking they're good enough. You make sure you always remember, you're exactly the way you're supposed to be. Exactly. And anyone who says otherwise, well, poppycock.”
Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover
“Ugly love becomes you. Consumes you. Makes you hate it all. Makes you realize that all the beautiful parts aren't even worth it. Without the beautiful, you'll never risk feeling the ugly. So you give it all up. You give it all up. You never want love again, no matter what kind it is, because no type of love will ever be worth living through the ugly love again.”
“Some people they grow wiser as they grow older. Unfortunately, most people just grow older.”
“Sometimes the spirit of a man isn't strong enough to survive the ghosts of his past”
“My grandfather used to say the placement of a birthmark was the story of how a person lost the battle in their past life. I guess you got stabbed in the neck. Bet it was a quick death, though.”
On Dublin Street by Samantha Young
“Gentlemen are gentlemen in bed. They make sure you're having a good time." "I'll make sure you're having a good time, and that you're okay with everything. I just won't be well mannered about it.”
“In truth it’s difficult to describe a broken heart.”

HOMILY for the 4th Sunday per annum (B)
Deut 18:15-20; Ps 94; 1 Cor 7:32-35; Mark 1:21-28
There are two reactions to Jesus Christ and his actions in today’s Gospel. The first reaction is astonishment and amazement. We’re not told if Jesus’s teaching and Jesus’s work of exorcism had any effect on the lives of the crowds of on-lookers, but they enjoyed the spectacle, they marvelled at what was said and done, they admired him, and they talked about Jesus so that he became famous throughout the region of Galilee. But Jesus didn’t seem to have any impact on them personally he didn’t change their lives because we’re not told that anyone followed him. So, the first reaction is superficial entertainment, and there is the danger in our own time too that we can hear the Gospel; we can read about Jesus and maybe know some theology; and we might see Christian art about Christ and the Saints or view beautiful liturgy in church or online, but all these will only move us superficially. That is to say, we’re amazed, astonished even, or its therapeutic, but we remain spectators, unmotivated to change our ways, to “repent and believe” as Jesus declared at the start of St Mark’s Gospel.
The second reaction is the other extreme: the unclean spirit that is cast out of the man knows full well who Jesus is, and so he believes and is forced to obey, but he will not repent because he fears that to repent, and so to willingly change his ways and to follow Jesus would destroy him. So there are also some people today who are afraid to think about the demands of the Gospel, who fear examining their conscience and having to changing their lives in order to follow Jesus with integrity. Why? Because to do so would ‘destroy’ our lives as we know it! For we would have to abandon our sins; do away with bad habits that have become so used to that we can’t imagine ourselves without them; we would have to repent and change. And this just seems like too much effort, too risky, too frightening. And so, the Gospel and Christ himself is seen as a threat to our current lifestyle, and so, like the demon, we can think that Jesus has come to “destroy us” and make us religious ‘extremists’.
The retired Archbishop of Lancaster, Bishop Patrick O’Donohue, who had been auxiliary bishop in our diocese of Westminster died in this past week, and I am reminded of the comment made in 2008 by the chairman of a parliamentary cross-party who did not like Bishop O’Donohue’s guidelines for Catholic education. He was told that “faith education works all right as long as people are not that serious about their faith”. In other words, because our contemporary society, like the demon, fears the serious changes and repentance of heart demanded by Christ, so the best thing that can be done is to neutralise the Gospel and render it ineffectual, by not taking it too seriously, so that we should all effectively behave like the crowds and just look on in astonishment and gossipy admiration.
But there is a third reaction. As the psalm response today says: “O that today you would listen to his voice! ‘Harden not your hearts.’” If we allow the Word of God to penetrate our hearts today – every day, in fact – and so to soften it with the grace of the Holy Spirit, what will happen? The example of countless Christians and saints down the ages, beginning with the apostles themselves, and coming down to our present time shows us the extent to which the Holy Spirit can work in our lives, to give rise to self-giving lives of charity.
In the reading today from St Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians we find the origin of the ancient Christian practice of celibacy, a powerful sign of the total gift of oneself to Christ and to following him totally. St Paul himself, following the example of our Lord Jesus Christ, was unmarried so that he could devote his life to preaching the Gospel. This, then, is another reaction to the coming of Christ into our lives: there is a total consecration, a total gift of oneself, in heart, mind, soul, and body, to following Jesus. As Pope St Paul VI wrote, drawing on the teaching of the Second Vatican Council, the celibate life is a “new way, in which the human creature adheres wholly and directly to the Lord, and is concerned only with Him and with His affairs; thus, he manifests in a clearer and more complete way the profoundly transforming reality of the New Testament… it signifies a love without reservations; it stimulates [persons] to [embrace] a charity which is open to all.” So, the third reaction, a genuine response to the teaching and work of Christ, transforms our realities. Christ, who is God’s living Word made flesh, changes our lives, and elevates how we see and relate to the reality of life as it is now, a life that St Paul VI says would be “wholly dedicated to pondering and seeking the new and delightful realities of God's kingdom.”
The grace of celibacy, of course, is a very particular way of responding to the Gospel’s call to listen to Christ’s voice, to harden not our hearts, and to follow him. And many people run away from this call, and the world completely misunderstands it or finds it impossible. And some people have failed spectacularly in living up to this vocation. And yet, none of this should be an excuse for us today to harden our hearts to Christ or to allow our fear to paralyse us.
Hence Pope Benedict XVI says: “Are we not perhaps all afraid in some way? If we let Christ enter fully into our lives, if we open ourselves totally to him, are we not afraid that He might take something away from us? Are we not perhaps afraid to give up something significant, something unique, something that makes life so beautiful? Do we not then risk ending up diminished and deprived of our freedom?…
No! If we let Christ into our lives, we lose nothing, nothing, absolutely nothing of what makes life free, beautiful and great. No! Only in this friendship are the doors of life opened wide. Only in this friendship is the great potential of human existence truly revealed. Only in this friendship do we experience beauty and liberation. And so, today, with great strength and great conviction, on the basis of long personal experience of life, I say to you… : Do not be afraid of Christ! He takes nothing away, and he gives you everything. When we give ourselves to him, we receive a hundredfold in return. Yes, open, open wide the doors to Christ – and you will find true life. Amen”.
So, today, if you should hear his voice, listen, and harden not your hearts. All of us as Christians, whether called to celibacy or not, are called to give ourselves, our lives to him; called to deep friendship with him; called to enter, without fear, into the deep joy of knowing and loving God. For this is the reason Christ has become Man, and dwelt among us: God has given himself to us so that we can open wide the doors of our hearts and our lives to him; so that we’re no longer just spectators of God’s glory but participants and partakers of divine life.

Xu Mo - Painting Gallery Date (Translation) Part 3 and 4
SPOILER ALERT!!
This date from CN server which hasn't been released on EN server yet. Might contains some spoiler.
Brace yourself for angst moment from Lucien (as usual)☹
I'm doing this translation for personal reason, so I'm sorry if there's some mistranslation. Kindly tell me if you found some :) feel free to read it~ ^^
I used Lucien CN name on it, Xu Mo.
Read previous part here
PART 3
Xu Mo and I went to an oil painting experience hall called "Film Oil Painting Gallery".
The aroma of coffee and milk tea is floating in the air, and the hydrogen and hydrogen echoes in the mellow jazz music. The drawing boards are placed in an orderly manner, and people are immersed in their own small universe.
There are dream catchers and many small creative ornaments on the wall. But what attracts me most is the works painted by people who came here before.
The fluorescent beach under the stars, the idling ballet dancers in the night, and the whales rolling up in the deep sea. Some paintings also have a text written on them.
I scanned these paintings curiously, Xu Mo silently followed behind me, looking at me with a smile.
Suddenly, I stopped in front of a painting.
The paintings show Paris at different times. Sunny, rainy, day, and night. From cafes to the banks of the Seine, famous and unknown streetscapes are covered with painted paper.
In the lower left corner of the painting, there is a small poem written.
MC: "I want to live with you, sharing endless dusk and endless bells in a small town."
MC: What a beautiful poem, I always feel where I have read it..
Xu Mo: It is a poem by Russian poetess Tsvetayeva.
Xu Mo walked to my side and turned his eyes on the painting to me, with a trace of inquiry in his drooping eyes.
Xu Mo: You like it a lot?
MC: I....
Store Manager: Hello, are you here to paint?
The voice of a middle-aged man interrupted my conversation with Xu Mo.
Xu Mo nodded to the store manager.
Xu Mo: Yes. This painting is very special, we want to know the background of its creation.
Store Manager: Of course! When I first saw this painting, I was just as curious as you guys. Then I asked its author and he generously shared with me the story behind it.
Store Manager: He said that he once met a girl in Paris, and the two chatted from day to night. This painting records the place they passed.
MC: It seems like the plot in the movie...
Store Manager: Yes. Unfortunately, the ending is not as perfect as in the movie.
Store Manager: The girls already have a marriage contract, and they agreed that if they decide to start the relationship, they will meet in front of Notre Dame in Paris at dusk the next day.
MC: But they didn't meet in the end, did they?*
(* this is the edited translation)
Store Manager: Oh, what a pity
Just as I was feeling sad about this story, Xu Mo, who had been silent, raised his hand and rubbed my hair lightly.
Xu Mo: Don't be sad.
Xu Mo: Painting is a tool for memory, but it also has the power of forgetting.
Xu Mo: At the moment he painted, perhaps, he was ready to say goodbye.
Store Manager: Yes, miss, don't have to be so sad, you should be happy to draw with your boyfriend today!
Store Manager: We have special boxes for couples here, let me take you there!
MC: I....
Xu Mo: Alright, then I will trouble you.
Before I could finish my words, Xu Mo interrupted me.
Following the manager, we came to a closed box. He poured two cups of tea for us, said that he could come to him anytime if there was a problem, and then closed the door and left.
MC: This person is really not sloppy.
Xu Mo: Okay, let's sit down first.
Sitting on the sofa and looking at the neatly arranged painting tools, I couldn't help asking my questions.
MC: Why are you taking me here?
Xu Mo: Remember our agreement?
My mind started to rewind quickly, but I couldn't remember what Xu Mo's agreement was.
Xu Mo: Forgot about it so quickly? But I keep it in my heart.
這麼快就忘了? 我可是一直好好的放在心上。
Xu Mo pointed to the paintbrush.
It suddenly dawned on me that I remembered the previous agreement.
There's 2 options for this:
A. Does it mean to teach me the convention of drawing?
B. Is it a promise to draw together?
Option A
MC: Does it mean to teach me the convention of drawing?
Xu Mo smiled and nodded.
Xu Mo: I have seen all your paintings.
Xu Mo: It seems that you don't need me as a teacher, you also have enough talent to understand it yourself.
The thought that all the "ghost-like" paintings in the sketchbook fell into his eyes, I couldn't help but put my face in a shy manner.
Xu Mo took my hand away and wrapped it in his warm palm.
--
Option B
MC: Is it a promise to draw together?
Xu Mo: Yes.
MC: I thought that when we draw on the sketchbook, we have already fulfilled the agreement
Xu Mo: I will do what I have agreed with you.
He looked at me with a smile, his eyes soft and firm, which made ripples in my heart.
Xu Mo: What does that puzzle look like? We can draw another one
It turned out that this is why he brought me to the oil painting studio?
He has not forgotten the agreement between us, and he has always remembered that I lost the puzzle.
MC: It is a puzzle of a forest, well, it may be more difficult to draw...
I suddenly remembered that Xu Mo once said that he can only copy, not create.
MC: Or forget it, we can draw something...
Xu Mo: I have a way, but I don't know if you will like it.
I immediately nodded like a chick.
MC: Well, I will love it!
Xu Mo rubbed my hair indifferently, then picked up a pencil and drew on the paper intently and earnestly. The nib rubbed against the surface of the paper and made a rustle.
I couldn't help looking at his soft and clear side face. In the narrow space, I could only hear our amplified breathing. After a while, the outline of the painting became clear.
MC: Horse? No, it has a sharp horn on its forehead...
MC: It's a Unicorn!
A mirror-like lake, thorny roads, and unicorns in the forest. Behind it, among the dense trees, a dark shadow could be vaguely glimpsed.
Xu Mo: According to legend, the unicorn lives in the forest. It is a noble and beautiful creature. Few people have seen it.
MC: So it appears in the picture, representing the depths in the forest...
Xu Mo smiled and acquiesced to what I said.
MC: I heard that the horns of unicorns have unique healing powers.
Xu Mo: Yes. So despite the fear of its power, there are countless hunters who dream of falling into their trap one day.
I picked up the pen and added a bright moon to the upper left corner.
The bright moonlight leaked from the branches, casting a dim and soft amount of light, illuminating the road in front of the unicorn.
MC: It won't feel lonely now!
With the moon as its company, even if it is faced with greedy hunters and unknown road ahead, it will not be so scared.
Xu Mo turned his head and stared at me. There seemed to be a sea of clouds rolling in his eyes. In an instant, the clouds dispersed, revealing a light.
Xu Mo: Hm, not lonely anymore.
I blushed a little by his burning eyes, so I hurriedly shifted my sights.
MC: Leー let's color it!
Xu Mo on the side laughed lightly.
Xu Mo: Then I'll trouble Miss MC.
MC: Huh? Don't you paint?
I have been painting just now, but someone does not look at the painting, but instead looks elsewhere.
MC: I....
Xu Mo: Now it's my turn.
MC: You...
Xu Mo squinted his eyes slightly, with a smile on the corners of his lips.
MC: Alright..
I confessed my fate and compromised, after all, I was "losing''
For the rest of the time, I am seriously coloring the painting. It's just that whenever I bring up a color and want Xu Mo to give some advice, he will nod and say that's it.
Am I a painting genius?
I quietly dropped the color of my own on the paper, putting aside all worries, as if all the rhythm would slow down with the pen tip.
MC: It's done!!!
Xu Mo: Be carefulー
I was happy for only two seconds. I knocked the paint to the ground because of the excessive movement. There are yellow spots splashing on the finished painting.
MC: Why is it like this...
The bright yellow is particularly conspicuous. I felt regretful for a while, and it was already at the last moment, but because of my clumsiness, I gave up all my work.
I can't help but think of today's experience. It always seems to be a little bit short of it, and it seems that it is almost complete.
Xu Mo: MC, raise your head.
A warm chest pressed against me behind me, and a familiar breath brushed my ears.
I don't know when he have stood behind me.
He leaned down and wrapped my hand holding the brush with a warm, dry palm. The other hand went around my arm and stayed at the waist.
The breath of green grass surrounds me after the rain. Such an intimate action made my body stiff, heat climbed up to my cheeks, and my hands shook unconsciously.
Xu Mo: Don't move.
He took my hand with the brush, and dipped in yellow paint flying on the paper.
The yellow dots that were an eyesore just now have turned into warm fireflies surrounding the unicorn under our pen.
Xu Mo: No matter what the outside world is, hope it will be guided by fireflies.
PART 4
The store manager was amazed after seeing our painting, and hoped to keep it, like the paintings we saw on the wall before, for more people to appreciate.
Xu Mo left the decision to me. After a fierce inner struggle, I decided to keep the painting.
MC: We will come again next time for a better picture!
Xu Mo: Alright.
Xu Mo's tone and smile were very soft. Affected by him, the corners of my mouth curled up unconsciously.
Just as we were about to leave, we saw the clerk taking care of the oil painting.
MC: Speaking of which, the light here is so dark, it is also to better preserve the oil paintings.
Xu Mo: Well, long-term exposure to direct sunlight will cause oil painting to fade.
Xu Mo's voice suddenly lowered, and his tone became colder.
Xu Mo: Beautiful things are very fragile, so be protect carefully.
Looking at the picture of a street scene in Paris, I couldn't help but ask.
MC: You said, how long has Notre Dame de Paris existed?
Xu Mo did not answer immediately, but just looked at me and waited for me to continue.
MC: For such a long time, it has been silently guarding Paris and watching all the living beings.
MC: Remember the story told by the hero in the movie we watched together?
MC: The German soldier holding the detonator admired the beauty of Notre Dame de Paris, which prevented him from pressing the button...
MC: Beautiful things are not just objects to be protected, they also have the power to influence others.
I raised my head and looked directly at Xu Mo's eyes. The atmosphere that was light and pleasant just now suddenly became tense.
I can't even tell myself why I should be so serious on this question. I just vaguely feel that his answer is very important to us.
MC: Just like these paintings in the oil painting gallery, although they are not made by masters, they have a unique charm because of the touching stories behind them.
MC: Although Paris is beautiful, people who love each other are what makes it more beautiful.
Xu Mo stared at me quietly, without speaking, but the temperature in his pupils gradually became infected.
After a while, he raised his hand and pinned my scattered hair behind his ears. Then said in a soft toneー
Xu Mo: What's beautiful is, that reflects the world...your eyes
Leaving the oil painting studio, we returned to the noisy street. The dazzling sunlight made me squint, but in just a few hours, it felt like a world away.
Xu Mo couldn't help but pick up my hanging hand. He didn't use any force, but he couldn't resist it.
Xu Mo: This time, don't refuse me anymore.
Feeling the temperature from the palm of my hand, my heartbeat speeded up unconsciously, and the redness quickly stained my cheeks.
Whether it’s shy or sweaty palms, even though it’s always a little short of perfection, as long as I hold this person’s hand, I have the courage to face everything.
Just like a jigsaw puzzle, we will fill in those vacancies little by little.
MC: Xu Moー
I took out a glass bottle with a puzzle in it.
MC: Sorry I lied.
MC: In fact, after talking with you on the phone, I found the puzzle. But because I wanted to meet you, I didn't tell you...
After hearing what I said, a hint of surprise flashed on Xu Mo's face, but it was quickly replaced by a clear smile.
Xu Mo: It seems that I was too careless and trusted a little liar.
MC: This is a gift from Lisianthus! Of course, you can also regard it as my apologetic
Xu Mo took the glass bottle in my hand, with a smile in his mouth and eyes. (CG Karma also included)
He raised the vial to his eyes. The glass bottle in the sun showed a colorful light, and a yellow gleam was reflected in his eyes.
Xu Mo's pupils widened in an instant.
MC: It's Firefly.
MC: When I saw this puzzle in the store before, I thought it was very similar to the jungle we had visited before, so I bought it...
Xu Mo's eyes were overflowing with tenderness, and the smile on his lips was warmer than the spring sun.
Xu Mo: Very beautiful.
Maybe the light at that time was very soft, maybe the breeze raised his broken hair and rippled in my heart for a month.
I uttered the words that were hidden in my heart
MC: The oil painting may fade, but memory will not.
MC: I would like to put together a jigsaw puzzle, turning our memories into color.
I looked at Xu Mo and said firmly.
MC: No matter how far you go, Firefly will guide you.
Suddenly, everything was silent, and we all reflected each other in our eyes.
Then, I remembered something.
MC: Ah! I forgot to write on our painting just now
Xu Mo raised his eyebrows, and then chuckled out as if not holding back.
He came closer and scratched my nose with his fingers.
Xu Mo: You.
Xu Mo: Do you have anything to write?
MC: No, it’s just that it’s more like ceremony. After all, it’s a work we finished together
MC: Moreover, I am also very curious about what you will write on the painting.
Under the dazzling sunlight, Xu Mo smiled softly.
It was a smile he had never shown before. A bit childish, but unstoppable determination
He held the glass bottle in his hand tightly.
Secretly rejoicing that earlier today, looking at the sunlight outside the window, thinking of the girl who couldn't let go, he finally made the decision to go to the appointment as scheduled.
Is it more painful for those who wait, or is it more painful for those who make people wait?
Fortunately, it did not live up to this rare good weather.
Xu Mo grabbed the document bag in his hand. Let her see these next time.
Xu Mo: I can tell you now.
He looked deeply at the girl before him.
It is like turning her appearance together with this intoxicating spring scene into a beautiful fixation of time and space, a moving stop, imprinting in my heart forever.
Xu Mo: "I want from all the times, from all the nights."
Xu Mo: "Retake you from all the golden banners, from all the swordsー"
Xu Mo: "You have to hold your breath."

So I'm curious what are some character designs you love? Not from RWBY, but just i general. I'm the same anon who got you to check out Berserk and I'd say essentially all of the designs are done damn well. Fit the character. Changes that makes sense for growth. Also make sense given the setting. Even women in armor that doesn't have those massive boob plates. Good designs impact so much subconsciously to have much we enjoy other aspects of a story.
Congratulations! You’ve unlocked my never-ending need to praise Yu Yu Hakusho! :D
This long, picture-laden post needs two disclaimers going forward:
I’m not an artist. In the sense that I’m not a visual artist who knows anything about what makes character design good from a technical/community approved standpoint. This is purely based on my own, personal reaction to a beloved series.
Connected to that, I’m going into this under the assumption that people might really disagree with me (?). Based on the cartoons and anime that I see praised for character design, I don’t think YYH fits whatever list more knowledgeable viewers are pulling from. But I’m gonna lay out my thinking anyway!
Major spoilers for Yu Yu Hakusho below.
Alright let’s do this.
First off, when people start talking character design they often reference how cool a character is. Which makes sense. You want a character to be visually engaging and distinct. Something that makes you go “Wow!” whenever you look at them. However, one of the things I love about the YYH cast is how normal they are. Because they’re supposed to be normal. The trope of the main character having a crazy hair color has become so prominent that we’ve got memes about it now and that works for a lot of stories. You know who is important because, despite the assumption that they’re average people not dying their hair, they stick out like a sore thumb among the rest of the cast.
However, normalcy is a really important part of YYH. The entire point at the start is that Yusuke is not special. He’s not unique. He’s a delinquent kid who most assume isn’t going anywhere in life. When he dies this doesn’t unlock some Super Special Backstory - you were innately amazing all along! - he just gets caught up in the plot because of a paperwork issue. The afterlife doesn’t know what to do with an asshole kid who unexpectedly saved another kid’s life so they just kind of... shuffle him around until he’s given another chance to live. Then he gets to pay back that second chance by becoming a Spirit Detective. Yeah, Yusuke is talented when it comes to fighting and spirit energy, but at the start that’s rarely emphasized outside of “He’s the best street fighter among no-name street fighters so really, it’s not impressive once you take Yusuke out of his tiny world of school parking lots and the occasional alleyway.” The takeaway is that he’s a dime-a-dozen troubled teen who got involved in the spirit world due to an impulsive act and a bunch of bureaucracy. Indeed, it’s a HUGE moment of emotional growth for Yusuke to realize that people do love him despite his supposedly average, unremarkable, and otherwise negative personality. His normal-ness - and others’ expectation that he could someday make himself great if he learns to work at it - is crucial to where Yusuke starts out. Making him visually distinct in terms of Anime Protagonist Looks would undermine a lot of that. This isn’t supposed to be a Super Special Kid Destined For Greatness. He’s just... a kid. A normal kid. A kid who has to work and learn and grow if he wants to make something of himself. So he gets black hair, brown yes, and a green school uniform. He’s pretty damn average looking.
Same with Kuwabara. Same with Keiko. Same with Atsuko. They’re just normal people going about their lives and I always appreciated that they looked the part. You can still easily tell them apart thanks to different hair colors, texture, jaw lines, and outfits, but none of them seem out of place in the average world they start out in. Which, as said, is crucial to a lot of YYH’s themes. The ones who look more visually distinct - Hiei and Botan - aren’t human. It makes sense that they wouldn’t obey these same average laws of the rest of the cast and they are our first taste of a world that, in terms of character design, will eventually get pretty wonderfully weird. They function as stepping stones.
This eventually becomes a story about the demon world and those demons wouldn’t come across as particularly scary/other if you begin the story with equally strange looking humans. Or even just “I don’t see people who look like that walking down the street” humans. Alongside many themes, there’s a contrast at work here. Yusuke stepping out into a stadium full of demons who despise him because of his species hits home when he is so clearly distinct from them. Suddenly, his normal is abnormal.
Once the ball gets rolling, Yusuke’s looks are constantly in contrast with both his environment and his inner self. He looks like a scary thug but then unexpectedly saves a life. He looks like an average human but is actually the strongest among a group of scary-looking demons. He looks like this badass spirit detective who everyone assumes with have an equally badass spirit beast but, uh...
Oh my god that’s a precious baby. By the time our cast is family and everyone accepts that Yusuke looks scarier than he actually is or ever was - once the core group is made up of not just humans but demon loving humans who are equally soft - we turn it all on its head again and reveal that Yusuke has demon blood. For the first time he looks as strange and powerful as he is. Yusuke’s normality is done away with the second he’s fully accepted his place in these worlds, throwing everything back into chaos.
Yusuke’s demon form becomes even more foreign looking when he’s being controlled by his ancestral father. The above is a Yusuke who is still Yusuke and in many respects the design reflects that: natural hair color, human body, tattoos easily covered up with a shirt. When he’s gone full Mazoku though, something dangerous, the white, wilder hair and change to his expressions ensure we read him as something feral. For the first time in the series Yusuke is truly the dangerous creature he’s pretended to be since his principal was running after him at school.
As a side-note about character costumes, we see this emphasis on normality in their outfits as well. Obviously a story like RWBY is limited by how much time/money they have for animation, but it nevertheless has an impact to see the group almost constantly in their battle gear. They’re never not the main characters of an action-fantasy show, not even while just out around town with no expectation of entering a fight.
In contrast, Yusuke and Kuwabara are often animated in everyday clothing that remind us that they’re really just teens trying to live their lives outside of this crazy nonsense. Kuwabara wasn’t even formally hired for all this! The cast wears sweaters and jackets while out and about. More formal clothes for special occasions. Jeans and t-shirts when they’re unexpectedly caught up in a fight because, you know, they’re not ready for battle every second of every day. They’re drawn like normal folks because, outside of the ring, they are.
(We’ve also got a lot of parallels between Yusuke and Kuwabara’s civilian clothing, visually reminding us that they’re far more alike than they might be willing to admit.)
Despite often changing outfits, the group maintains a basic color pallet that makes them recognizable, yet it’s also not so limited that they appear strange for sticking to one (1) color for the entire time we know them. Yusuke, like most people, is drawn to particular colors, mostly greens, yellows, and blues, so each time we see him he’s familiar while also being distinct from the last time he changed.
Hiei, as someone who initially wants nothing to do with anyone else and relies on assassin-like speed to take out his enemies, is dressed almost entirely in black. Without that bit of white in his scarf/hair you’d lose him in the shadows... which is the point.
When he opens up and actually becomes friends with the team, his color pallet starts opening up a great deal too.
And we’re shown all the little changes he starts incorporating that speak to his growth: his Jagan eye, a bandaged arm hiding his Dragon of the Darkness Flame, the necklace connecting him to Yukina.
I’ve blathered on about the outfits enough but as a quick final note: EVERYONE WEARS APPROPRIATE FIGHTING CLOTHES.
No one (even the women to my recollection) wear heels. Everything is loose-fitted and looks easy to move in. They’ve got sensible belts, bandages if they need them, and... that’s it. No unnecessary bells and whistles that distract from what’s supposed to be the story’s real draw: good fights and good characterization. Even the more elaborately styled characters (usually) look like they chose their outfits practically first and for the aesthetic after. At no point do I recall watching this show and going, “WHY would you wear that to a fight??”
Anyway, back to the designs.
The exceptions to either side of these extremes - from human normal to demon monstrous - are Genkai and Kurama, both of whom straddle the line. Genkai is someone who has pushed her spirit and body far past the norm. She’s the first human we meet who truly goes beyond that normality, even if you don’t immediately realize it. Her pink hair (such a soft color in her old age it’s not at all distracting) is a slight hint that something isn’t quite right with her. She’s obviously human... but not a normal human. Not anymore.
Those unnatural looks are emphasized in her youth when she was at the height of her power.
Genkai as a young woman has vibrantly pink hair (a bright pastel like Botan’s), a softer face, and far more emotive eyes. She looks ethereal, which fits not just her own journey to power but Togoru’s as well. Her story is intimately tied up in what that power does to the human body/soul. So Toguro starts out like this
a pretty normal looking guy who is on the far end of what the human body is naturally capable of. He’s buff as hell, but not so much that it looks unreasonable. I’ve seen body builders bigger than him. He’s the average (dehydrated...) MCU superhero. However, he ends up like this
In Togoru’s case his abnormality is explicitly presented as grotesque. Rather than giving him a cool looking characteristic that’s clearly supernatural (blue hair, an extra eye, curly horns, etc.), we’ve taken a human characteristic (muscles) and expanded them to an unnatural degree. He’s got some uncanny valley shit going on.
Paralleling Genkai, we likewise see Kurama subtly standing out among his human allies.
He’s a demon in a human’s body. By in-world logic his appearance should be just as normal as anyone else’s, but a bit of his true nature shines through. His hair is long in a style not popular in YYH’s Japan. His red is far less of a natural shade than Kuwabara’s. He carries himself with the air of someone who is ancient, because he is. His human design deliberately reflects his true demon form so when that’s finally revealed we still recognize him as Kurama.
(Same sort of work with Hiei’s demon form.)
When we look at the cast together we have an immediate, visual impression as to who is normal and who is not - and those assumptions are embedded into the story. Yusuke is someone you’d overlook in the crowd, but he’s the most powerful. Kurama is clearly other in some way, but he’s desperate to live an average, human life. Kuwabara is designed to look and move like the fool and a lot of his development (his and others’ in relation to him, really. Like Hiei) is built around respecting him despite those looks. Hiei is tiny but will kick your ass. Genkai is tinier and will kick your ass worse.
Her size combined with her age - combined with her status as Yusuke’s teacher - is a continuous reminder not to judge power by looks alone. Don’t underestimate your opponent and get overconfident (a major flaw of Yusuke’s). Know that you still have a LOT to learn about the world. That woman you assume is just a rude grandma? She’s going to break your expectations over and over and over again.
Speaking of size, that’s a major aspect of Koenma’s design as well. When Yusuke learns he’s meeting the head of the underworld he starts picturing a massive, demonic beast who (sensing a theme here) looks the part of a supernatural ruler. Seeing Koenma for the first time - an adorable toddler-like being - is an absolute shock.
It’s a gag for the audience, but it’s not just a gag. Due to his looks Yusuke is unable to take Koenma seriously, despite knowing the power he holds.
Which, even more-so than arrogance, is Yusuke’s greatest flaw throughout the series. He doesn’t take school seriously. His death seriously. Ruler of the underworld seriously. His teacher seriously, etc. Yusuke constantly acts like he doesn’t care, throwing basic respect and effort in the face of whatever authority figure is desperately trying to keep him from self-destructing. He’s on the receiving end of multiple speeches throughout the series (mostly from Genkai) that boil down to, “Care about something, dammit. Take this seriously!” and when he does it’s GREAT. It’s a moment of growth we’ve really built to in a hundred different ways, including how he reacts to others’ looks. Koenma’s design feeds directly into the primary flaw Yusuke is working to overcome. How will he go from a delinquent laughing in the face of the most powerful being to someone multiple worlds can put their trust in? Design assists with that.
When Yusuke does respect Koenma (even if he still insults/teases him because that’s just an ingrained part of Yusuke’s personality) Koenma’s appearance can change. It’s no longer serving its original function, so he evolves into a very good looking young man (with references to Tuxedo Mask to emphasize those good looks) that just... happens to still carry a pacifier.
A pacifier that is revealed as an incredibly powerful weapon that will help save the world. Again: don’t judge anyone or anything solely on their looks. They’re never precisely what you’d assume they are based on your first glance - with the exception of minor villains whose looks serve only to convey their villainy:
For everyone else, looks are complex. Two of the most different looking characters (color-wise anyway) are actually siblings, their contrasts reflecting both differing cultures and the emotional distance between them.
The scariest looking monsters are just paper-pushers. It’s the handsome humans you should watch out for.
And this is our hero, a man charged with protecting three worlds.
I could say SO MUCH MORE but this is already disgustingly long so basically YYH (I think) does a great job of:
Crafting characters that are distinct but not different for the sake of different. They always feel like they belong to their individual worlds and adhere to whatever “normal” is by those standards.
Tying character looks really closely to the show’s themes and individual growth. Which, frankly, is something I think all good character design should do.
It’s not nearly as flashy as other anime... but YYH knows what it wants to accomplish and went about it beautifully. Catch me still weeping over this show fifty years from now.
Peace ✌️

Another RP post in the same vein as the previous one. Answering as Hieronymous Xiloscient, my hunchbacked elven illusionist, to Ginny Di as Augury the Shady Tiefling:
You’re late. We agreed on sundown, did we not? I hope it’s not a habit. Would you normally consider yourself a punctual person?
Not always. I have been known to get distracted. But I will do my best, my lady, in this as in all things.
Well, let’s not waste any more time. I am Augury, of course. My business needs no introduction, I’m sure. And it is best that we not name it. One never knows who may be listening. Tell me, what makes you think you’d be a useful addition to my guard? What makes you so special?
Oh, not a lot. Illusions, mostly. Appearances. I’ve found that the most deadly blow in the world doesn’t matter much if it hits the wrong thing. Or nothing at all. And yourself?
This work requires a very particular set of skills, and we’ll get to that, but it also requires a certain … mindset. Would you consider yourself a moral person?
Ah. I suppose I would consider myself an ethical one. Honourable. They are, of course, not precisely the same thing.
Hmm. And, were you raised with this outlook, or have you come to it on your own?
Oh, a matter of experience, most definitely.
As death is a necessary part of life, it is also a necessary part of this job. You’ve killed before, I assume. Please describe your first kill. How old were you? What did you feel?
Ah. A point of clarification. Do you mean the first personal kill, or the first death I may have caused? Because the former was not much, I’m afraid. A matter of instinct and magic. The latter was a little more deliberate. A matter of … hmm. Honour.
And neither were early. I came to many things young, my lady, but death was not among them.
As for what I felt … For the personal kill? Relief, primarily. That the threat was gone and that I would not need to die for it. For the arranged death? Well. Mostly the same, I suppose. Relief. Perhaps a little satisfaction.
Interesting. Would you say that you believe some deserve to die? And if so, what circumstances merit such a punishment, in your view?
Oh yes. Without question. Many people deserve to die. Or simply, through their actions, bring about its inevitability. As for why I might kill someone … A threat, at its base. Should they threaten me, or mine. Or something I value. That, I think, would move me to kill most reliably.
Hmm. And what are your feelings on torture?
I would prefer not to have any, honestly. Being what I am, I prefer the illusion, the appearance of pain, to the real thing. Though I do realise that that is largely a semantic difference. The effects on the victim may be much the same either way. But still. I’m not fond of a … personal mess.
Is anyone off limits to you? Women, children, the innocent?
Let us say the innocent, yes. But anyone with the willingness to launch an attack, man, woman or child, must expect that it will be answered in kind. That’s only fair, no?
I see. Well, then let’s discuss tactics. I’m not merely seeking brute strength, although of course that can be useful in its own way. If given the option, would you rather deceive, convince, or threaten someone into doing your bidding? Or my bidding?
Convince, most definitely. Deceptions fall through. Even the most perfect illusions cannot be maintained forever. And while threats may be efficient and have their place, they still run in opposition to willpower. It is much safer and more reliable, I feel, to have someone’s willing cooperation in some matter. If, of course, such a thing is possible. If it is not … well. There are other tools, and they do often work.
And are you a good liar then? Can you keep a secret?
I am a historian, my dear. Make of that what you will.
I want to be clear with you. I understand that each living being has their own mind, their own beliefs. My goal is not to change those beliefs in you, but simply to identify the cost of overriding them. Money is no object here. I am seeking the very best, and I am willing to pay for it.
I see. Your honesty is much appreciated.
Let’s imagine, for a moment, that someone bribes you to turn on me, to reveal my secrets. Could you be bought?
Well. You see. I’m very forgetful, I’m afraid, my lady. You’d be amazed how many questions I’ve forgotten the answers to long before they’re asked. I would say that, what little I might remember would likely not be worth all that much money.
And, if they torture you? Will you break easily?
Ah, well. I don’t know, to be honest. It hasn’t come up. I would hope not to have to find out.
Well. I’ll tell you in advance, anything anyone offers you to turn on me, I will double it. Consider it a reward for delivering them to me.
That is good to know.
Come. It’s not all so dark. What about, ah, errands. Chores. Are you too good for them? Delivering messages, for example. Ah. Refilling my wine.
My lady, I think to look at me you might understand that I am not generally a prideful man. Though nor am I a dextrous one, so … I would keep that in mind.
You will not be my sole guard, of course, I already have many formidable creatures in my employ. Do you play well with others?
That depends on the others in question. I will say that I don’t tend to enter conflict incautiously, however. I shouldn’t like to stir trouble before being aware of its outcome.
And, if you were to identify your main weaknesses, what would they be?
*gestures down at himself* As you can probably tell, my dear, I am very far from sturdy. I wouldn’t advise putting me at the front of the line, as it were.
Interesting. I do like you, I admit it. I find you … unique. You would bring something new to my offices, there is no doubting it. What will it take? How much a week to tempt you away from your party and whatever your current objectives and bring you into the fold?
Oh, you needn’t tempt me from current objectives, my lady. I tend not to have any. And long-term ones can wait, oh, a few decades. A reasonable retainer should suffice. And … perhaps a little honesty. Clarity of purpose, shall we say. Though you have done admirably in that regard so far.
You could have anything you wanted you know. Consider it. Don’t be hasty. We’re in the city three more days, if you decide to accept. Inform me by then, and if you don’t … well. Let’s hope we don’t run into one another again.
Ah. Yes. A thing much to be hoped, I do understand.
You may go.

Island Oddities
Islands, especially isolated ones, are something of a biologist’s paradise -- the isolation, numerous empty niches and often eclectic and unusual natures of the specific organisms that end up stranded on any given island have given rise to a truly amazing range of unusual and specialized lifeforms. This is especially clear when we look at the recent geological past, and the island endemics that lived during and after the ice ages.
One thing that pops up very often are dwarf versions of mainland animals -- dwarf elephants and hippos flourished on several islands and are some of the most iconic examples of island dwarfism, where large animal species shrink in size due to reduced space and food sources on island environments.
Dwarf elephants arose numerous times from both elephant and mammoth stock; they were widespread in the Mediterranean -- Sardinia, Sicily, Crete, Malta, Cyprus and the Greek islands were all home to populations of pigmy proboscideans.
Sea levels fluctuated throughout the ice ages as the glaciers advanced and retreated, so several islands were colonized on multiple occasions by full-sized elephants and mammoths who became stranded when the seas rose again. This resulted in multiple separate instances of dwarf proboscideans of different levels of dwarfism arising independently -- Sicily and Crete were home to several species each.

Other dwarf proboscideans, mostly belonging to the genus Stegodon, lived in Indonesia. The dwarf mammoth Mammuthus exilis, descended from the much larger Columbian mammoth, also lived in the Channel Islands of California until about 13,000 years ago.
Mammuthus exilis compared to a human.
As I mentioned, dwarf hippos were also common. Dwarf hippopotami lived on Sicily, Malta, Crete and Cyprus during the Pleistocene, while three species coexisted in Madagascar until about a thousand years ago.
Examples of this also existed among ruminants; the Balearic Islands were, until about 5,000 years ago, home to the tiny Myotragus, a relative of goats and sheep that, besides being maybe half a meter tall, also had front-facing eyes (unlike the side-facing eyes of most herbivores) and incisors that grew continuously, like those of rodents and lagomorphs. It also had bones similar in structure to those of cold-blooded animals, suggesting it had adapted to have a much slower metabolism than other mammals in response to its home’s balmy climate and lack of predators.
Probably the most extreme example was the minuscule Candiacervus, a deer that shared Crete with the dwarf elephants and hippos and that stood no more than 40 cm at the shoulder.
Candiacervus ropalophorus next to the flightless owl Athene cretensis
A very ancient example of this is also known in the form of Europasaurus, a dwarf sauropod that lived on an island in a large archipelago that is now central-western Europe.
Europasaurus compared to its larger relative Giraffatitan
The opposite phenomenon -- island gigantism -- is also well-recorded, and happens when small creatures respond to environments with plenty of food and few predators by growing huge.
Flying animals also tend to lose their ability to fly -- flight and the growth and maintenance of the large muscles animals need to fly are both huge resource and energy drains. If an animal doesn’t need to fly on a regular basis (such as to escape predators or move between distant areas), then the growth of specialized flight organs can become a significant waste of resources, and natural selection will favor animals whose atrophied flight musculature lets them allocate those resources elsewhere.
When paired with island gigantism, this has resulted in creatures such as the late lamented dodo (its closest relatives are, in fact, pigeons, although dodos seem to have reached up to one meter in height), the moa-nalos (giant, flightless ducks) of Hawaii, the moas of New Zealand and the elephant birds of Madagascar.
(Four species of moa compared to a human)
All these factors -- gigantism, dwarfism, flightlessness -- naturally often occurred in the same places and in the same times as different species responded differently to their island environments. The result in the creation of multiple very peculiar and unique environments.
New Zealand is a fascinating situation, since its lack of any native mammals besides a few bats meant that the birds lately had it to themselves, and evolved to fill all sorts of niches that are normally filled by mammals -- the moas, for instance, occupied the niche normally taken by big and medium-sized ungulates.
Malta and Sicily, in addition to dwarf elephants, were also home to Cygnus falconeri, a giant island relative of the modern-day mute swan perhaps two meters long -- tall enough to loom over its pachyderm neighbors.
Modern-day Gargano, in southern Italy, seems to have been a large island during the Miocene, about 12 to 4 million years ago. It lacked large mainland predators outside of birds of prey and some crocodiles, and as such many of its native creatures developed gigantism and -- among the birds -- flightlessness. Natives included Hoplitomeryx, a genus peculiar, five-horned deer-like creatures; Deinogaleryx, giant carnivorous moonrats; the giant flightless anatid Garganornis; and a variety of both giant rodents and lagomorphs, including giant pikas, dormice and hamsters; and two species of giant barn owls, Tyto gigantea and T. robusta, which were likely among the island’s dominant predators.

The Druid of Mothem
### I started working really hard on this one AI Dungeon campaign mapping out the whole world of Xaxas that the game offers and putting it all into World Anvil (an online world builder) So i can better track places and people since the AI in AI dungeon can only remember so much. The majority of this story is created by GPT-3 (if I had to make a guess I’d say ~85-90%. I also used the website Art Breeder to generate the pictures for the characters and landscapes. ###
### AI is coming a long way. I plan to continue this story since I love playing a druid in 5e. ###
### I also added the new AI Dungeon feature which allows the gaining of stats so every time I try to do an action, it rolls on stats that continue to grow. ###
### But besides that, I also rolled out a Druid Wood Elf and have a character sheet to follow
I’ll link everything after the story, other than that I hope you enjoy!! ###

You are Goodaquazi, a male elf druid who lives in the town of Morthem. You are new to the town though rarely actually visit it. Being a druid you're the most comfortable being outside the town in the forest with nature. The town of Morthem consists of a few large buildings and many smaller ones surrounding it. Humans and elves make up the population of this small farming town. A large deep forest surrounds the farmland as far as the eye can see. It truly is a beautiful forest.
When you're not spending time in Morthem, you can be found deep in study at a small nature temple located somewhere away from Morthem deep in the forest. This temple is where all druids or those with an interest in nature and druidism spend time in study, meditation, or prayer.
The day to day life of Morthem goes on with or without you and that's OK. The people are content and that's all that's in your heart. It's a simple life, and you're happy with that.
You are in a forest somewhere far from any civilisation. This is your home and you feel comfortable here with the animals, plants, and nature. You were taught by the master druids to harness the natural magic energy that exists in all things. You practice this skill every day for there is always more to learn.
You lie down on the ground, stretching out your arms and legs along the lush grass and closing your eyes. The sun is high overhead, its light filtered through an unblemished blue sky. A cool wind blows through the field, carrying with it the rich scents of soil and nature. The grass is damp from last night's rain, and you can sense the life force of the land, almost as if it were a living creature itself. The scents and sensations are almost overpowering after your time in the city, but feel refreshing now that your senses have been reawakened.
You slowly open your eyes. All around you, plants grow and animals live in a perfect state of harmony with the land. You vanish from their sight, though creatures with greater senses might still be able to detect your presence if they were really looking.
However, it is not upon the ground that you wish to be. You feel cramped and bored lying there, so you take a deep breath and rise up into the air, levitating several feet above the ground. You are weightless, able to drift through the air with only a thought.
You have many hidden conversations with animals as you move through the forest and they, curious about this friendly stranger. Different types of animals, each with their own unique personalities, sizes and abilities. There are fighting animals able to kill even the largest of beasts, and others that are solely for transportation or, in some cases, purely companionship.
You drift along atop the wind, smiling and laughing as you fly. This is how you move from place to place when you are outdoors. Eventually, you begin to get a splitting headache from all the sensory input and decide to head back home for the day.
You approach your cabin by nightfall. Made chiefly of wood with a thatched roof, it looks every part the fairy-tale cottage. An enormous oak tree towers over it and provides shade. You walk up to the door and unlock it with ease. Heading inside, you take off your shoes, as is custom in this land. The entire floor is covered by a thick carpet of grass which springs back up after every step you take.
Una, your girlfriend, is preparing dinner. Her long blond hair falls down to the small of her back and her sky coloured eyes pierce your very being. By her feet rests Zane, the cutest puppy you've ever seen who can someday grow up to be a fierce guard dog if given the right training.
"Hey, Una," you say.
"Uh-huh," she replies, engrossed in the cooking.
From another room, you hear a baby boy giggling. The newest member of your family, Behan, lies in his cradle. You fly through the door and hover over his crib, looking down on his innocent features. Through your son, you have discovered the true joys of fatherhood. All younglings go through an insane rebellious phase, which Behan will eventually go through too, but for now he is really sweet.
"You look tired," remarks Una, suddenly standing beside you with a bowl of strawberries in her hands.
You take one out of the bowl and eat it, relishing the sweet taste as it enters your mouth. "I had an interesting day," you reply. "Why is Zane outside?"
Una blushes. "I wanted to surprise you. Turn around."
Curious, you do as she says and spin on the spot. You hear Una squeal with delight before her arms embrace you from behind and her head rests itself upon your shoulder. "So?" she asks, a mischievous smile evident in her voice.
You turn to face Una and are faced with the image of her clad in a tight, midriff showing black dress and knee high stilettos. Your jaw drops and you stare with awe. "Wow," you utter, staring at her beauty. "You... look... amazing!"
"I thought we could go to a friends' house to eat. They're having a party, do you want to go?"
The constant sensory input has given you a monstrous hunger, and as much as you love Una, you need food. "Absolutely," you say.
The two of you fly to your friend's house. The manor lies on a hilltop which descends into a plain, which lies on the edge of a dense evergreen forest. You are faced with the grandest house you have ever seen. Dozens of little windows peer at you like wandering eyes. Hundreds of lights create the illusion that the house is glowing. The manor is at least four stories high and has a tryst swim among trees behind it. The entire setting is like something out of a fairy tale. You land beside a golden pathway that leads up to the manor. The evergreen forest towers over you on both sides and a soft, cool breeze passes through it, sending chills down your spine. You take a deep breath through your nose as you enter through the heavy wooden door.
You are faced with a giant hall, with several corridors branching off it. The walls are lined with suits of armour, which glare at you with iron eyes. Black and white tiles line the floor, and a giant chandelier made up of antlers hangs from the ceiling. You both walk past the hall and down one of the branching corridors. Tiny flickering lights dance along the corridors' walls. You peer into a room and see a grand piano and several pieces of classical music written in notes on sheets of music. You enter the room as you sense somebody there. An old man with a goatee sits in the corner of the room, playing the piano. The music is slow and rhythmic.
You remember this man. He was one of Una's former boyfriends, a pianist that travels around the country and plays for people. You are about to call out to him when Una grabs your wrist. You look at her, meeting her fiery eyes. She motions for you to follow her and the pair of you bypass the man entirely. The next corridor weaves back and forth and has the same black and white tiles as the last corridor. Finally, the corridor brings you to a set of stairs. You climb the stairs slowly, and as you do you see someone at the top. It's the host of the party, Judge Beckery.
"You came!" he says, smiling. "I can already tell this is going to be the best party ever."
"Who was that man playing?" you ask, motioning toward the room with the grand piano.
"Oh him?" says Beckery. "That's just Harvey. He's a bit of a weirdo."
You nod slowly.
"Anyway, I just got here myself," says the Judge. "I'll show you to your room."
The pair of you head up another flight of stairs and Beckery stops at the first door on the left. He opens it and ushers you inside.
"I hope you'll be comfortable in here," he says.
The room is small but comfortable. It has a double bed, a dresser, and a nightstand with a lamp. There's also a desk in the corner. The walls are covered with a deep blue wallpaper. You set your bags down on the floor and look out the window. The courtyard and forest surround the house.
You return to the party. Those few feet between you and Una seem like an endless distance, one that neither of you are willing to cross.
As you enter the room the crowd melts away before you and everyone stares in astonishment. You stand there, surrounded by a crowd of people. A fight seems inevitable.
Suddenly the crowd parts and Una comes before you. She looks into your eyes and gives you a small smile. It's a smile that says everything will be alright. You smile back, and then feel your face flush and your heart flutter.
Before you stands Una, a tall and willowy young woman with long blond hair, gray eyes, and fair skin. Her beauty takes your breath away--more than that, her presence does, the way she stares back into your eyes timidly yet still willing to meet your gaze for as long as you like.
"I love you Una, thank you for bringing us here but I'm starving! Why don't we go into the dining room and get something to eat?"
Everyday your craft keeps you occupied and your spare time is spent with Una. As the years pass your personal life and druidic life begin to overlap one another. Your love for Una only deepens and your son Behan grows in strength and wisdom. You tell him stories of the old lands of Tuatha, and promise that when he's old enough you'll return, if only to visit.
"I saw the strangest thing today," Una says to you as you eat dinner. You are eating roasted duck at this party and Una has been watching you and Behan with a faint frown on her face.
"What's that?" you ask.
"I saw one of the peasants run over a fox and kill it." she says.
"That's terrible, why would someone be so careless about a living creature. What if that fox was me Una? Did you see who the peasant was that ran over the fox? " you respond.
"I did," she says, "It was Chris."
"Are you sure it was him?"
"No. But the man I saw was a barbarian and he's friends with that barbarian."
Knowing Una, this must have bothered her greatly. You've never been a fan of Chris, it seems that even if you are wrong about him, you still have to tell him to apologize to Una. As the sun disappears over the horizon and night falls, you head over to Chris's room.
You rap on his door and he bids you come in.
"What the hell do you want." Chris grunts angrily. You can tell he's clearly been drinking and not to mention his room smells awful. You also notice that there are various bottles filled with assorted types of Liquid.
"My wife is pretty upset with what happened at the party earlier, and I'd like to apologize if I could." You lie.
"Alright?" He says to you as he lights his pipe, the lighter producing a small blue flame.
You quickly chant a short incantation and the flame on his pipe flares up as smoke billows into his face, he has been incapacitated by the flames and he begins to scream as he desperately tries to pat them out.
You rush over and smack him in the head with your palm and he's out like a light.
You then look for Una to make sure she is alright, you find that Chris' alcohol and medications have finally kicked in and he has gotten some sleep.
You reassure Una and tell her not to worry about anything.
The next morning you both wake up and start to gather your equipment together.
You hug Una close and tell her how much you care for her.
"I told you everything was going to be fine." She says to you with a smile, "Let's go home, I miss Behan...and you need someone to do the shopping and cleaning."
Slowly the two of you head home. You start to reflect on the events that have occurred and realize that your life is finally calming down. You open the door of your home to find Zane making Behan laugh by chasing his tail. You watch your family with a smile on your face, glad that everything has worked out for you. You take a seat and call Zane over to join the family for a group hug.
“Good boy” you say to Zane as he begins to wag his tail happily. He gets up and goes over to Behan who is attempting to crawl away to no avail. Zane begins to lick Behan in the face, you watch them both laugh and occasionally look over to Una. You feel truly happy just watching them all. This is real happiness, this must be how Father felt. Time passes and it's nighttime before you know it. You tell Una that you're gonna cook dinner for tonight so she can relax and enjoy her night. With the nightly routine of cooking, cleaning and putting Behan to bed you soon find yourself heading off to bed as well.
As you both lie in bed with Una's hand wrapped around your arm you feel truly complete. There's nowhere else in the world you'd rather be, you have everything you need right here.
Your eyes start to get heavy as you fall asleep with a smile on your face. Your mind drifts from one thing to another as you find yourself entering the druidic realm of dreams. Several hours later you drift back into consciousness and remember the events that have led you here. You open your eyes and slowly sit up, the sun is already high in the sky outside and Una is nowhere to be seen. Knowing that she's probably out hunting, you get out of bed and look out the window. You take a deep breath through your nose and smell the scent of trees, nature, earth, and wild animals. You feel truly at peace in this moment.
With a smile across your face you walk over to Behan's bed and pick him up.
"Come on Behan!" you shout excitedly "Let's go play outside!"
You look outside and everything looks great. The forest, the trees, the earth, everything is perfect. This is your life now, and you wouldn't have it any other way. You set Behan down on the floor and go over to your dresser to grab your clothes. Nature is perfect, yes, but there are simple things in life that make it better. And one of those things is clothes. You put on your typical outfit, nothing too fancy, just your typical wool pants and tunic. With that done, you walk outside to play with Behan in the fields.
Zane wakes up and comes to join in the fun running around in circles and making Behan crawl after his tail. Every day is a happy day when you're with those who matter to you .
As you look out across the fields to watch Una returning from hunting with freshly killed deer, you realize that those that got you through hard times are the ones that matter most.
You will continue life as it is now. There is nothing else you could desire.
You greet Una with a small smile and hold out your arms for the deer carcass.
"Good work Una." You say smiling at her as you lift up the deer.
"Thank you." Una responds looking down at Behan who crawls over to her legs.
The carcass will feed your family for the next few days. You set it down near your home and bring Una inside to rest. She's a hero today and that's all that matters. She deserves to be treated as one.
You Kiss Una on the forehead and lift her in your arms to carry her into the bedroom.
You place her near Behan, and they both fall into a gentle sleep. They look like an angel and a demon sleeping together, but there's no malice in them at all!
You grab your blade and walk over to the deer carcass. You begin to butcher the beast using your vast expertise in limb severing. First, you remove the legs, then the head and then the torso. You work fast because you don't want the meat to begin rotting. With enough salt, you could eat it in a day or so.
Your family will eat good tonight and for the next few days!
Having finished the job you walk back into the house returning to Una's bedside to watch her sleep until dusk arrives.
Throwing in some pork for extra taste, you set out to make the deer meat stew.
The meat and bone will be used to make the stew and the offal fed to Zane who is begging by your side the whole time.
A blue flame envelops your hand and you slam your hand into the oven! The rich scent of flame-broiled deer meat fills the room in an instant.
"Zane! If you eat any more of my food, you won't grow up to be big and strong like me!" You joke at your small but ferocious dog!
Finally, the food is done, and you sit down with Una and Behan to enjoy an evening meal.
Master of fire you may be, but without the love and support of your wife and son you would burn out in a flash. Tonight you are happy and look forward to an amazing life with your family.
You hold Una's hand and thank her for being the amazing woman she is. "I have a goal set for myself tomorrow Una, I'm going to learn to shape shift" you explain. Una smiles and shakes her head fondly at you. "You'll never stop learning will you?" she asks in response. You both laugh and enjoy the evening meal.

Chapter 34- Masked Marauders
Previous Chapter
Once again, this was all written during the first week or two of hermitcraft season 7, so none of these mega bases of the jungle hermits have been built, and unfortunately Ren hadn’t moved into the mesa yet. If he had, I’d definitely put him in since i know Ecto loves Ren!
Speaking of Ecto, have a wee bit of Ecto angst. I feel the need to say, mostly to ease my own anxiety, that in no way to I believe any of this that I write- this is all part of the story and exclusively their minesona. Ecto is an amazing and awesome person that deserves love and good friends, and I hope none of this causes issues. But I also know we all love angst here.
Ecto belongs to @cooler-cactus-block (sorry the ‘at’ system won’t show up your current one)
Red belongs to @theguardiansofredland
This isn’t the first time Ecto has gotten lost on her own. Suddenly losing sight of Scar and the others didn’t bother her. She just kept going in the direction that they were before, following the sun towards the northwest. Just like she would in her desert.
Her home. What was her home. Has the blizzard stopped? How deep is everything she ever loved, everything she ever lived for, buried? How much has survived? The desert had been Ecto’s home her whole life. It was a place for surviving, a land so different from anywhere else. Where no trees grew, where dunes replaced hills and sand replaced dirt. It was a unique place for a unique person. A person that didn’t fit in other places, that people always thought of as strange.
Through the dense leaves, Ecto hears a noise. It sounds like a zombie, but higher pitched. A baby zombie? Those little things are fast, ankle biters with a vengeance from beyond the grave. Ecto pulls out her sword, sunlight reflecting off the enchanted iron blade in speckles that shafted through the dense canopy. The groaning is getting closer, but it’s not the only noise out there.
She also hears a soft hush, and a chuckle being swallowed back down. She’s really started to hate this feeling, of being watched all the time. The next grumble of the high pitched zombie noise, Ecto takes off towards it. She’s done sitting and being spied on. “Face me you coward!”
Ecto bursts through the greenery, wielding her sword to fight off the zombie. Instead, her entire body near escapes the pull of gravity when she’s the one surprised instead. A massive bird, with a yellow feathered face and red plumage jumps back at her. “Pesky bird!”
Another, much smaller blue parrot echos the larger one, before returning to the zombie noises it’s been mimicking. Once Ecto has regained her sense of sanity, she realizes that she’s not looking at two birds. She’s looking at one bird and a human with a bird mask, blonde hair peeking out from behind the yellow and grey. While the two birds are giggling at their jumpscare, Ecto recognizes that voice. “Grian?”
Grian pulls up his mask, wiping away the tears at his eyes. He’s embraced the Jungle Bandit lifestyle, using leaves, flowers, and feathers to make a more practical version of his hippie attire. He’s a part of the jungle, swinging from vines and foraging from the land. At least until he gets started on his first megabuild. “Ecto, is that you? What are you guys doin’ back so soon?”
“I lost Scar.” Ecto pulls herself up from the ground, wincing as her wound stretches against the movement of her body. Blu got her good, but she’s not going to let any of her aches stop her. Scar’s bandages definitely are helping hold her together. What she wouldn’t give for some cactus to chew on though.
“Ah, yeah this jungle is really confusing. A whole new world is confusing, period.” Grian sets his mask to the side. “So how did everything go once you guys got back to your world? Did you get to that stronghold you were looking for?”
“Yeah, we got there. But everything went downhill from there.” Ecto groans, thinking off all the horrible things that have happened. This journey should have ended when they reached Avon’s stronghold. Instead, the worst part just began. “Most of us don’t have a home to go back to anymore. We’ve just been...walking.”
“Wandering.” Grian hums, noting the forlorn note in Ecto’s voice. He doesn’t want to push her for more information. It sounds like it’s painful just to think about. A fresh wound, physically and emotionally. Grian isn’t very good with sad emotions, but there is something he is good at. Getting people to smile, to feel joy. And he remembers Ecto’s spunky attitude from Area 77. “Hey, do you want to help me prank some of the other hermits? I have some plans but I really need a second hand to help me out.”
A mischievous glimmer sparks in Ecto’s eyes and soul. “You want me to help you get into trouble?”
“I want to have fun. And there’s no harm in a little bit of trouble if it’s all good natured fun, right?” Grian picks up his mask, and even offers Ecto one as well. Green, like a cactus.
And the jungle bandit had a partner in crime. Two pesky birds- and Professor Beak- flitted through the jungle, clambering over low trees and high vines. They return to the small pond that Grian and Scar share. Scar isn’t home, which is exactly what the two were hoping for. Larry already had his mustache, but with two cheeky minds put together he soon also grew a pair of arms to twist said stache. They flee as soon as the job is done, and the snail has gone through a sudden evolution to gain hands.
Throughout the jungle, the two leave odd signs and statues. Roses growing from trees, markers pointing to nowhere, trees left completely bald. At one point, the two run across a strange structure in the woods. Stone and jungle wood ring the cultic center, where two fires burn at a steady, endless pace. “I have no clue what this is, and I’m afraid we may be snooping around something we shouldn’t be.”
“You people sure like your cult initiations.” Ecto muses, before escaping the strange altar in the middle of the forest.
With Scar already well pranked, Grian had to turn his attention to one of the many other inhabitants of the forest. The jungle bandit would strike everyone- even those he just learned are his neighbors. The pair manage to find their way to Stress’s base, devilish grins and cocky giggles reaching through the masks as they near. Professor Beak imitates them, laughing as well.
“Oh, carrots. Don’t mind if I do.” Grian pulls up the crop, ready to be harvested. He chuckles to himself as he plants one back into the warm, moist soil. “Pesky bird. That’s why you always harvest your crop.”
“Do husks appear in jungles as well?” Ecto questions through a mouthful of cocoa beans. She only ever had these a few times before, the sweet chocolate melting in her mouth. Grian looks over, surprised to see the tan colored zombie floating his way towards the two.
“No...he must’ve wandered into the jungle from the nearby mesa.” Grian starts to get an idea as he watches the hapless creature, so slow in the water.
Ecto perks up. Mesas mean one thing to her- cacti. “There’s a mesa nearby?”
Ecto’s already wading through the shallow water, despite not knowing where exactly it is. “Whoa, hold up. Let’s put this lost guy to good use. Then we can check out the Mesa.”
Grian and Ecto manage to wrangle in the lost husk. Ecto has had years of practice toying with the mindless mummies, and kiting this one was no different. Except instead of baiting it into a cactus trap, she brought it into a lead held by Grian. Together, the two drag the husk into the depths of Stress’s base.
Grian has more of an idea what to do from there, and the husk as well as Ecto just observe him with open mouths and empty eyes. The husk can’t even think, but Ecto’s thinking about the mesa. It’s not a desert, but it’s close enough. She can’t wait to escape this humid, dense forest. She’s used to being hot, but not this sticky kind of hot.
Grian steps back, hauling the husk into a hole and silencing him. And right above the husk, Ecto places down Stress’s magenta colored bed. “What is the point of this?”
“You know how hard it is to sleep with monsters around.” Ecto frowns, but Grian just continues. She has no trouble sleeping with monsters, she’s used to them at this point. “It’s simple, but it’ll definitely frustrate Stress- I can practically hear her grumbling about it now.”
“Can we go to the mesa?” Ecto isn’t really interested in pranking anymore. It was fun, and Grian is fun, but she wants to see the mesa. The closest thing to her home she’ll have seen since the blizzard.
Grian catches on, realizing that this is more than just an impatient friend. Ecto tries to keep a face of indifference, but every time she turns away, he can see it. Sadness. Loss. A desire to go somewhere she can’t find. When she thinks he’s not looking, he can see her smile disappear, especially from her eyes. She’s mourning something. “Let’s go to the mesa. I think we’ve had our fun here.”
The bandits flee the scene of their crime, Grian guiding Ecto eastward, to the mesa. But it’s not long until Ecto is stumbling past him. She can smell the arid land from here. It’s earthy and warm, with a crisp scent of sand and dust. It cuts through the rich scent of detritus the jungle traps in among the humidity, calling her.
Ecto escapes the clutches of the vines and trees, busting out into the sandy mesa next door. She leaps from a tree branch, rolling across the sand as she lands. The grains stick to her clothes and skin, embracing her with their warmth from the unobstructed sun. Ecto digs her fingers into the orange sand, watching the broken rocks fall between her fingers as she holds them up. Sand has never been such a welcome sight.
She remembers what can only grow from sand, and snaps her head up. Mesas don’t seem to grow cacti as fervently as deserts do, but she can see a few growing on a mound of sand in the distance.
Grian isn’t sure he’s ever seen someone so happy to see a mesa biome, or even a cactus. He’s grown so tired of all the cactus his farm has been producing, he’s drowning in the spiny plant. Ecto returns to him, bouncing in her boots and holding one out. “It’s been so long since I’ve been able to have them. I forgot how sweet cactus juice is.”
“You actually eat that stuff?” Grian questions, taking the piece that Ecto is offering him.
“It’s the easiest way to get water in the desert.” Ecto takes a look at the few cacti she was able to acquire. They’re in rough shape, with brown blemishes and weak spines. She’s not sure if they’d even be able to hold her weight at this point. She turns her gaze to the horizon, but she doesn’t see any more cacti. Either they haven’t grown, or they’ve already been taken by other hermits.
Grian’s quick to notice what Ecto is looking at, looking for. “I have cactus at my hobbit hole. Actually, I have more cactus that I know what to do with. Do you want some of it?”
The joyful smile all across Ecto’s face is all he needs to see. It warms him to see someone so happy over something so simple. To give joy to a friend, to another person is all Grian wants to do. He tells Ecto to wait, and go jogging back into the jungle. He’s faster at climbing through the jungle than her, and it’ll be a pleasant surprise when he returns with his bounty. At his home, Grian digs through every chest in his cactus farm, pulling the collected material before it can be put into compost. He’s stuffing the succulents into every pocket and pouch he can find in his new hobbit threads, even tossing aside his tools and supplies to make more room. At this point it’s as much about getting rid of all his overflowing cacti as it is making Ecto happy.
Ecto hears Grian swearing before she sees him. Mostly because she was looking for his blond hair, but all of him was hidden behind an entire armful of cacti. So much cacti, Ecto isn’t sure if she’s seen that much at one moment. His clothes are stretching with the weight of the plant, and each one is precariously stacked on top of the others in his arms. Even Professor Beak is carrying his weight in cacti. “What do you even plan to do with all this? I mean, I’m not complaining. It freed up so much storage for me, but I’m curious.”
“I’m going to jumpstack!” Ecto cheers, taking as many cacti as she can hold and starting her tower. She didn’t get to do this in the last hermit world, so this feels especially exciting. Building her monolith in a completely different world. Not just another dimension, another world. She’s careful to position her feet under her, in between the spines before hopping. While there is space between her and the cactus, she places another one. She lands perfectly so that the needles just barely scrape her shoes, feet light as a dancer’s.
As Ecto stacks higher, Grian can only watch as she’s shadowed by the sun, dropping and blinding him until she’s reached beyond the sun’s rays. It’s not until Ecto has run out of cacti that he realizes she has no way to get down. She has no elytra, nothing.
And yet, she jumps. Ecto has become a pro of surviving falls that would normally kill other humans. She doesn’t need fancy wings or magic. She sees Grian scrambling across the sand below, but she tucks into a tight ball and rolls across the sand as she hits. It’s jarring, but it doesn’t kill her. Even though it’s still sunset, Ecto swears she can see stars. Apart from that, she’s still gaining control back when she hears Grian. “What was that?!”
“I needed to get down.” Ecto hums, standing up with a sway and brushing the sand off her scarves.
“What about using water? Or scaffolding? There are better ways, Ecto!” Grian grabs her by the shoulders, still shocked by such a ridiculous stunt. He hasn’t seen anyone so willing to defy death since Cub during Demise. And even he eventually lost that battle.
“Water is hard to find in the desert. And why build more than necessary? Look, I’m fine, and this is the most direct way.” Ecto’s face pinches up at the suggestion. She shrugs Grian’s grip off of her shoulders, turning around and looking back up at her art. One monolith stands tall above the jungle trees, spines scraping at the untouched sky. Her build may be the tallest yet.
Grian can only chuckle, shaking his head and shaking away the nerves. “You’re quite the weird person, Ecto.”
Weird. Ecto knows that she’s different. She thinks different, acts different from the normal. She’s decided that she won’t change. . It’s a flaw she can’t erase. And people abandon her for that. Disregard her, turn on her. But what about Grian? He is strange like me, but his friends still stick around. Why do they all leave me? Why does he stay around even now?

TAFAKKUR: Part 144
The Thorny Devil: A Lizard with Unusual Physical Features
Australia is an extraordinary part of the earth, with its scorching sand mountains that stretch across barren plains, rock columns each unique and amazing, labyrinth-like domes that rise like towers, spine-chilling cliffs, misty rainforests, highlands and national parks. A land of dreams for many people, Australia is also a paradise for endemic creatures. A visit to the desert offers a chance to extend dreams beyond the horizon if the visitor happens to spot a reptile or snake rushing past from among the cracks in the red-hot rocks. This is an entirely alien place. The letters the Lord has presented for eyes to see inspire a different kind of awe of the Artist.
One such wonder, the thorny devil (Molochhorridus), is an endemic creature that presents itself as a source of contemplation. It is a lizard between 10 and 15 cm long, with a broad body that is completely covered with cone-shaped sharp spikes, and has a rather big head and small eyes. Its appearance is made even more frightening with the two spikes on the sides of its head, which look like horns and are stronger than the others. On the back of the lizard’s head is a separate bump that resembles a second head on which there is another big spike. These unusual physical features have earned it the name the thorny devil. The lizard’s golden and brown patchy skin provides camouflage in the desert environment. Having a lifespan of between 12 and 20 years, this work of art is equipped with unique features that inspire greater awe as they are studied.
Deterrent tactics
Living in the harsh conditions of the desert, the thorny devil is equipped with tactics, each more interesting and unusual than the rest, to keep enemies at bay and stay clear of danger. First and foremost, the thorny devil’s color gets dull when it is frightened or cold, which adds to its melding with the environment. It also breathes in and holds the breath to enlarge its body and thus makes its already frightening appearance even more so. If the tactic does not work to deter the enemy, another strategy is put in place. The creature lowers its head until the lump with the thorn protrudes further. By producing its biggest weapon against the enemy, it seems to say “Don’t you dare come closer” and fends it off.
Skin and feet like a sponge
The most hidden secret of the thorny devil lies in its ability to absorb water through its skin and even feet. The thorny devil is geared up with a special skin make-up that can collect and transport water to the mouth as required by the environment. This structure is a mechanism that involves micro capillary tubes and a network of channels that connects them. The architecture of the network allows for capillary movement, that is, water can resist gravity and move upwards. This is how the lizard is enabled to drink water from sources like ponds, wet sand and droplets condensing on the skin. For example, this little desert creature can absorb water through its feet simply by standing on a little pond, without having to lower its mouth. Drinking water directly from water sources is already difficult, because the tongue and jaw structure of thorny devil is specially created to hunt its prey.
To unravel the intricacies of this mechanism, studies were conducted in the labs of the University of Western Australia on specimens of the Molochhorridus from the Gibson Desert. The studies focused on five water sources that could feed the creature: the rainfall, puddles, moist soil, water droplets from dew, and thermally-induced condensation. The aim was to uncover the effectiveness and efficiency of these sources in the thorny devil’s moisture-harvesting.
In the most striking of these experiments, which looked into collecting water from puddles, the lizards were placed in a puddle of 3 mm deep and the changes in their weight were measured. The thorny devils were divided into two groups as those that drank water and those that did not and were then observed for 60 minutes. It was found that there was a weight increase of 3.66 percent in the lizards with no jaw movement (i.e. non-drinking lizards). On the other hand, the increase in weight was found to be significantly higher at 6.84 percent for the lizards which had rhythmical jaw movements (i.e. drinking lizards). An examination of the jaw movements showed that every jaw movement accounted for the absorption of 0.7 milliliters of water.
To measure the lizards’ absorption of water from “moist sand” they were placed on soil containing different levels of water, varying between 3 to 22 percent. The amount of water absorbed through feet and skin was measured through differences in weight. It was found that water absorption increased proportionately as water content increased. A weight increase of 0.20 percent was found even in soil that contained 2 percent water; in soil with water content of 22 percent, the creature’s water collection amount averaged 1.84 percent. Although little, the increase was concluded to be significant.
Moreover, experiments with “pre-heating with moist sand” showed that pre-heating had a significant impact on the ability of the skin to draw water. It was also found that water collection through “water condensation supported by difference in heat and moisture” caused a weight gain increase of 0.215 percent. These studies show how fantastic a capillary system the thorny devil is equipped with to collect water from different sources, and thereby quench its thirst.
When we lend an ear to this little but amazing creature, we can almost hear it say that every living thing in the nature is being duly taken care of.
Surely God it is He Who is the All-Providing, Lord of all might, and the All-Forceful.
(Qur’an 51:58)

INCREDIBLE INDIA
We arrive at the territory of 1,000 languages along with 1,000 gods. In the Intercontinental, the ladies in my personal collection are well versed with marigolds and branded with all a standard red dot onto our foreheads. This lodge is an oasis of luxurious at a polluted metropolis of 14 million folks. Two times have been spent traveling Delhi. The sites comprise Gandhi's Tomb and lots of UNESCO World Heritage Web Sites. Wherever else have historic customs combined together using the present in the scale therefore clear as in Delhi. Extra fat sacred Brahma bulls block site visitors creating flaws. Within this land, cows guideline. Canines, monkeys, and kiddies cross their risk.
I really like spiced foodstuff and commence each evening with a3 alarm-curry breakfast. We mind through trainer for Rajasthan, the gorgeous desert country by which cattle are substituted with camels. We reduce these induced throwing up, enemas, nasal drainage along with blood-letting.
We see the sacred town of Pushkar having its own sacred lake made by Lord Brahma. Pilgrims appear from afar to wash at the ghats and snore round-the-clock. We know about religions: Zorastrism,'' Sikhism, the mysterious Sufi's, Jainists who won't eliminate a mosquito, Hinduism that asserts no total accuracy and also the caste system. We see temples in the lake; a few really are"blessed" by priests. Later on, a highlight for me personally was 1 hour Camel Cart Safari supporting the scenes of this honest. Let Us Not Shrink
1992 was a terrible year for me. Within ten months both my parents died, I was laid off from my job, I became very ill and I found out that I had two incurable autoimmune diseases (Crohn’s Disease and Ankylosing Spondylitis, a form of arthritis) that I would have to live with for the rest of my life. Oh, and my truck died. It was the icing on the cake.
My doctor prescribed Prednisone. It was one of the very few medicines they had at the time to treat people who had these diseases. The only problem was some of the side effects could be very severe. Among them were the rare side effects of mental confusion and psychosis. Unfortunately, these were the ones I experienced. It started with not being able to concentrate and feeling depressed. The quality of my animation work went downhill. When I arrived home from work I would go back out and walk five miles every day just to level out my mood and clear my head. I complained about the side effects I was experiencing to my doctor but he didn’t want to take me off the medicine. So I continued to take it and the side effects continued to get worse. By the time I was taken off prednisone, I was near catatonic. The doctor had to hold my head in place to keep it from drifting off to the side and a voice told me to tell the doctor I was hearing voices. I remember the event as if I were not inside my body. I was only vaguely aware of how frightened the doctor looked. He immediately threw me into a hospital and placed me on antipsychotic medication, (the kind they give to those suffering from schizophrenia), while they tapered me off of the Prednisone.
The first night in the hospital I suffered from hallucinations of some invisible creature placing pressure on my chest and trying to squeeze the breath out of me. The only way I could stop the feeling was to turn on the light and read the scriptures. Long term use of Prednisone stops your adrenal glands from functioning so as I came off of the medication and my adrenal glands started functioning again I began to suffer from debilitating panic attacks. I remember when I returned to work I was so overwhelmed by the regular stress of my job that I would roll myself into a little ball in a corner of my cubicle and shake. It was only later when someone described drug withdrawal to me that I made the connection and understood that my coming off Prednisone was the same kind of experience. My reaction to Prednisone had been so severe that my doctor sent me to have an MRI done to make sure I didn't have late-onset schizophrenia. The test came out negative. But from the time my adrenal glands started functioning again I have had to live with an elevated level of anxiety and depression.
There were other problems as well. I couldn't focus. What I had learned about animation seemed to have disappeared and I felt as though I had to learn how to animate all over again. I had a terrible time reading. It took at least a year for me to be able to read the scriptures, retain and comprehend anything in them again. It took even longer for me to trust that I could receive answers from my Heavenly Father. The experience made me feel more alone than I ever had felt in all my life. I couldn’t feel the Spirit and I couldn’t feel my Savior’s love. I remember crying one night as I wondered how I would ever find my way back to God when I couldn’t feel His Spirit.
As I slowly recovered from the devastation this drug had reaped upon my mind, all the things that I had not fully grieved for before I was placed on Prednisone came back to me and I experienced them all, the loss of parents, the loss of work, and the loss of health as if they had happened in one day. On one particularly dark day, I remember sitting on my bed with my Dad's gun in hand. I had inherited it after he died. It had occurred to me that I could end all the suffering I was going through with just one bullet. That thought scared me so much that I took the clip out of the gun, walked out to the huge community garbage dumpster, and threw the gun inside.
That experience was and remains to be, the most horrible experience I have had in my life, yet throughout this trial, I continued to turn to God. For a while, I wondered why I had to go through it all. But when I began teaching I started to see what that experience had given me. I could recognize in my students the various emotional struggles they were going through. I could tell when a student was suffering from depression or anxiety. It was easier for the Lord to show me why a student was struggling. I even recognized the signs of schizophrenia in a couple of students because I had been there. I knew what it was like. So many of the experiences college students go through I had experienced first hand, and this was just one more experience I had been given to help prepare me to teach. It was horrible and it was hard but it gave me a set of unique tools that helped me work with my students in a way that I would not have been able to do before the Prednisone experience.
Years ago, Neal A. Maxwell, a man who was an Apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, was diagnosed with Leukemia. For 46 days and nights, he endured debilitating chemotherapy which left him weak and fatigued. When he asked the Lord why he was going through this trial the answer he received was simple. The Lord told him, “I have given you Leukemia so that you can teach my people with authenticity.” And when he was later asked what lessons he had learned through this trial of having Leukemia. His answer was "I have learned that not shrinking is more important than surviving."
Just before the Lord gave his magnificent Atonement, He prayed that the cup Heavenly Father was offering Him might be removed. Then He did something that most of us still find impossible to understand. Without a word of complaint, or insisting on knowing why He humbly bowed to His Father's will. "Nevertheless not my will, but thine be done." (Luke 22:42) Knowing that what He was going to go through would be so hard that it would cause him to be "sore amazed" (Mark 14:33) and to "tremble because of pain and to bleed at every pore" (Doctrine and Covenants 19:18) our Savior chose to submit to the will of the Father, trusting His Father, more than Himself, to know what was going to be best for Him. as well as all mankind. When our Savior understood that this was the path the Father had for Him to travel, He moved forward and completed the Atonement for all mankind.
In the Book of Mormon, Alma 7: 11-12 it says:
“And he (Christ) shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people.
“And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.”
I am willing to bet that there are going to be a lot of people that will look back on 2020 and say "that was a terrible year". There is fear and anger caused by the coronavirus, and Covid-19, the new disease that plagues our friends, neighbors, and loved ones. Jobs have been lost because of the pandemic and homes are in jeopardy of foreclosure. There is racial unrest, economic upheaval, and injustice all around us. And then there are the personal trials that seek to tear our very souls apart. But I can also say, from my own experience, that if we are willing to turn to our Heavenly Father, there will be a day when healing will take place, meaning will be given to suffering, what was lost will be found and wisdom will grow out of grief. So let us not shrink. Let us move forward with faith in our Father in Heaven and His knowledge of us and what we need. Let us not murmur but sing praises to Him all the day long for His wisdom is greater than anything man knows our trails will be consecrated for our gain and we will be cleansed and become worthy through the great Atonement of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
