MASTERLIST OF THE STORY
Chapter 57: Endgame.
“Alright, it's time. Bring them back.” Steve told Bruce. It had been two minutes and a half since they killed Loki and Y/N and they were getting impatient.
Bruce nodded and signaled for Natasha to grab the defibrillator to shock Y/N as he prepared himself to shock Loki.
“Alright, on three Nat.” He said and the redhead nodded and looked at her friends limp body, frowning in concentration. “One, two, three!”
Suddenly, a gasping Y/N and Loki jumped quickly into a sitting position.
“Are you guys okay?!” Bruce asked them both, frantic, as he was trying to check both their vitals at the same time.
They both looked at each other and nodded.
“We are okay.” She told him, calming her breathing.
That's when she felt something materializing in her hand. She looked down and found the dagger of death, with some runes carved into it that weren't there before.
“You got it.” Loki told her.
“I did.” She laughed incredulously. Then she remembered how she got it and frowned unnoticed by the team, except for Loki, who noticed it and looked at her with question in his eyes. A second later, she sobered up. “Alright guys, the whole dying thing has me quite tired. Could we go to get some rest?”
“Y-yeah.” Steve answered her. “Of course.”
“Are you sure you're okay?” Natasha asked her again, unsure.
“Yeah, I'm fine. Just really tired.”
“Alright, go rest guys. We will take care of the dagger.”
They both nodded and got up from the beds to head to their room.
“Y/N,” Loki began as soon as she closed the door to their shared quarters.
“Yeah?” She wasn't looking at him and that's what made him sure that something was wrong.
“What was her condition?” He asked knowingly.
Y/N took in a sharp breath.
“Sigyn's soul.” He lifted his chin and nodded.
She went to the end of the bed and sat down, looking at the floor.
“Am I a terrible person Loki?”
“You are not, my love.”
“But I… I agreed because in a way I want her to suffer. How can you justify that?”
“Y/N,” he grabbed her hand, “she killed your family. She then proceeded to lie to you and infiltrate this new family that you found with the intention of killing you and eventually ruling over the universe with a position that is yours to have.” She chuckled breathily.
“When you put it like that…”
“Y/N…”
“It just hurts, you know? When I stop to think about it, it hurts. And I don't want to hurt her, not really, past my rage, I'm just hurt… But I… I need to hurt her to end this.”
“I know, darling. I know.” He said as he wrapped his arms around her shoulders and pulled her into his chest. “You are the last person who should go through this.”
“Yet here we are.”
“Here we are.” He agreed.
“I love you Loki. And I'm really scared.”
“I love you too.” He told her and then breathed in deeply. “And everything will be alright. I promise you.”
--------------------------
“Y/N, wake up!”
“Loki? What-” She was cut off by a loud explosion echoing a few floors down.
“She's here.” She widened her eyes.
“F.R.I.D.A.Y where is the team?”
“The garden miss.”
She got up from the bed and began running with him towards the rest of the team.
When they both reached them she saw the scene that was unfolding with a knot in her stomach. Sigyn was there with her whole army of enhanced soldiers, smiling wickedly as she looked at Y/N.
“Steve! The dagger!” She told him.
Captain America looked at her and shook his head.
“What?” She whispered.
“You mean this dagger?” Sigyn's voice answered for him. She looked at her and found the dagger in her hands. “You were really going to kill me, little sister? That is harsh.”
Y/N clenched her teeth and put herself in a defensive stance, prepared for a fight. The goddess laughed loudly.
“You really think you stand a chance without this?”
“I guess we'll have to find out.”
“Very well, whatever you wish.” She signaled for her army to prepare themselves and soon enough, the garden was a battlefield.
“We can't win this fight! We need a plan, Cap.” Clint said in his earpiece.
“I'm thinking!” He responded as he was trying to catch his breath in between throwing his shield around and knocking out a few of them, only for them to get back up again.
“This is like fighting an army of Y/Ns and Wandas, how the hell are we going to do this?” Sam asked, worried.
Meanwhile, Y/N was looking at Sigyn, flying over them and smiling maliciously, knowing that she was winning.
“The mind flayer.” Y/N whispered with wide eyes.
“What?” Clint asked.
“They all have…” She grunted.
“Y/N!” Steve shouted. “Y/N!”
“I'm… fine.” She said as she got up from the floor after getting hit as Loki helped her. “They all have a part of her power. It's like a hive mind. We need to kill the mind that has control.”
“How are we gonna do that when she has the only weapon that can kill her?”
“Make sure you're distracting her army… and let me handle her.”
“Y/N, no!”
“Please Tony, this is my fight.”
“No, it's ours.” He told her. “Go, we'll keep them occupied.”
She smiled softly.
“Darling,” she looked at him expecting resistance but was met with a soft look. “Be careful. I love you.”
“I will. I love you too.”
And just like that, she was flying over every one of them, heading towards her sister.
“I thought you were smarter than this.”
“Yeah well, you overestimated me.” Sigyn smirked. Then she prepared her hands for combat and Y/N did the same.
Blasting her magic towards the goddess, she grunted when she missed and was in return hit with Sigyns magic.
“You stand no chance against me.”
“You keep saying that.” She blasted her magic and this time she didn't miss. Sigyn almost fell to the floor. “Are you trying to convince yourself?”
“Ha!” She laughed. “I know you are trying to distract me. You are not good at this, Y/N.”
“Oh, but I am.” She told her as she disappeared into thin air and appeared behind her, kicking her back and making her fall to the floor this time.
“An illusion? That is cheap, even for you.”
“You've always been a sore loser.” Y/N shook her head and landed on her feet gracefully.
Sigyn got up and faced her, but couldn't stand for much longer as another blast of magic hit her. And another, and another.
When she managed to get up, she strutted towards Y/N with an expression so livid it made her question what person she had let into her life for these past two years.
Sigyn kicked her in the ribs and she fell on her back, wheezing. When she approached her again, Y/N kicked the back of her legs and made her fall on her back.
For a bit, they kept throwing punches and blasting magic at the other.
“Alright, time to distract her.” She said into her earpiece.
“On it.” Sam said and began shooting at her from the sky.
“These mindless mortals!” Sigyn groaned, more annoyed than anything else.
Perfect, Y/N thought.
“Sam, keep her occupied, I need to get the dagger.” She looked at Loki. “Loki, love, could I borrow your favorite dagger?”
“I- yes, darling.” He said, narrowing his eyes at her, confused.
“Thanks.” She said and then she closed her eyes and concentrated on conjuring the dagger she had given Loki a few years back, when they had not confessed their love yet.
Meanwhile, Sigyn was trying to blast Sam with her magic and he was dodging her attempts. Until he wasn't anymore.
“Sam!” Y/N yelled as her friend fell from the sky. “Someone get him!” She cried.
“Another one on the list of dead loved ones?”
Y/N clenched her teeth and looked at her. That's when she heard Wanda speak on the earpiece.
“He's okay, just hurt.” Relieve flooded her in waves and she looked at Sigyn with so much rage she could've killed her right then and there.
“You are not going to win this Sigyn.”
“Oh, but I already have.” She said, gesturing around her, at the avengers fighting and getting more tired by the second.
Y/N looked at them, they wouldn't be able to hold on for much longer. She closed her eyes and concentrated in summoning her magic. Then she opened them and looked at her sister.
“I swear to you, you are going to regret this.” She said strutting towards her with a set jaw.
Y/N hit her again and again, while Sigyn did the same. The ones around them couldn't tell who was winning, which worried them. Sigyn, on the other hand, was sure that she was.
“Keep hitting me all you want, you know that it won't kill me. I on the other hand-” Y/N hit her on her stomach. “I can kill you.”
“I dare you to try.”
“Oh, I will.” Sigyn pulled out the dagger and began throwing jabs at Y/N. She dodged most of them, except for a few scratches here and there.
Y/N kicked the goddess onto the floor and the dagger went flying in the air, falling a few meters away.
Rolling on the ground and grunting, they were both trying to fight off the other and grab the knife.
Suddenly, an explosion rang out behind her, where everyone else was, and she turned briefly, ignoring the screams from her teammates. Then, everything turned into a slow motion movie. Screams could be heard, but only as echoes.
“Look down, sister.” Sigyn's voice sounded distant but she did as told.
“Y/N!” Loki's voice rang out as she found the dagger dunked in her stomach. “Y/N!” He kept screaming, trying to get to her, but the soldiers wouldn't let him.
She turned around slowly and looked at him. At her love, her everything. She looked around, the broken and tired faces of her family, the reason she was alive. Her life flashed before her eyes, every moment that led her to where she was now. She then looked up and begged for a miracle to happen. Turning to him, she whispered:
I love you, Loki. Forever.” And then she fell to the ground, limp.
“No!” He wailed, his voice shattered.
“I told you she did not stand a chance against me.” Sigyn said, standing up.
“I'm going to kill you.” Natasha said, full of rage and grief.
“Ha!” The goddess laughed. “I don't think any of you understand what just happened. Y/N was your only chance, and she's dead. So now, kneel before your new queen!”
When no one did as told, still standing and prepared for a fight, she groaned and looked up at the sky in annoyance.
“I said, kn-” She choked on her own words as blood began pouring out of her mouth. She looked down to see a red stain on her stomach, growing bigger by the second.
“I told you… I'd win.” Y/N told her between small gasps as Sigyn fell to the floor.
“How did you…” She tried to ask.
“I switched the daggers. You stabbed me with Loki's dagger and I… stabbed you with the dagger of death.” Sigyn began coughing. “I want you to know…” She looked at the goddess, her sister, the one she had spent every day with ever since she appeared on the compound claiming that she was not who she thought she was. In many ways, Sigyn changed her for the better, in other many, many ways, she did not. She looked at her sister and remembered every night spent reading together, singing silly songs, watching scary movies just to see her terrified face when a jumpscare happened. She looked at her sister and couldnt find it in herself to care. So her next words, she said them very slowly. “I want you to know… that this is for my family.” And she stabbed her again, in her heart.
“I-Im sorry.” Sigyn said slowly, in a hushed whisper, as she was dying.
“I don't forgive you.”
And after coughing a few times, her body laid limp on the grass. When it did, the soldiers began slowly falling too. Then, Y/N's vision began to blur, the adrenaline wearing out and her wound beginning to cause its effects.
Before she fell to the ground, someone caught her.

The Proposals
MAIN MASTERLIST
bucky barnes x reader
Word Count: 2,325ish
Summary: Bucky tries to propose to you, but nothing ever works.
Tumblr media
Bucky knew on the second date, that he was going to marry you. But he also knew, that it would freak you out that if on date three, he asked you to marry him. So he waited. But a man in love could only wait so long. By the time you and him had been dating for seven months, Bucky couldn’t wait any longer. He dragged Steve and Sam to jewelry stores across New York, in search of the perfect ring.
After losing hope for the perfect ring, Tony offered to design one. For free. Bucky struggled with Tony’s offer, but eventually gave in once Tony and Steve showed him the sketches and mock ups they’d put together. Wanda and Natasha helped put everything together when the night came. There were lights strung up everywhere on top of the compound, a small table was set up for the two to enjoy dinner, and Bucky and ordered your favorite meal. Bucky had been nervous all day, he got dressed in his best suit hours before you two were scheduled for your date.
You were suppose to be coming home from a long Avengers business trip tonight. You had been going to different countries, advocating for the Avengers Initiative. Bucky and you talked everyday, but that was not enough for either of you. You were currently on your way back to the compound, flying on a quinjet from London. Exhausted, you decided to put the quinjet into autopilot and get a few moments of sleep before your date with Bucky tonight. The blissful thought of sleep soon was far away when a call came in from Fury.
“I have an emergency assignment for you,” he stated.
“Sir, I’m just coming off a long assignment,” you explained. “All I want to do is see my boyfriend and sleep.”
“You’re the closest to the emergency. I’ve already got your quinjet rerouting to the location and the information of the mission is being sent to you.”
“But—“
“And I have Rogers in charge of telling Barnes that you won’t make it. Good luck.”
You sighed, running a hand down your face before getting up and changing into your hero gear. All you longed for is a lazy night with Bucky but, as you skimmed through the information Fury sent, that seemed to be a few more days away.
Steve, on the other hand, was trying to pawn Fury’s assignment off on anyone else on the team. No one would take it. They were all hiding in the lab, trying to get someone to go up to the roof and tell Bucky the news. They had all witnessed his nervousness all day, and were even subject to some aggression from it. So they were all a little scared for their lives when it came to telling him that you wouldn’t be home for a few more days. Eventually, when the time came that you were suppose to be arriving home, Sam gave in and sat that he’d do it, as long as everyone else came as back up. They all agreed and headed up to the roof.
Bucky was pacing like crazy when they arrived. Tony had to suppress the urge to make a comment about wearing through the roof the closer they got.
“Hey, Buck,” Steve called. He had really tried to control his tone, but his best friend was an assassin. There was no hiding from him.
“What’s wrong?” Bucky quickly asked, fear taking over his whole figure. “Did something happen? Please tell me that Y/N’s okay.”
“She’s okay, Barnes,” Sam stepped forward. “She just won’t be able to make it tonight.”
Bucky’s face fell. “What? Why?”
“Fury called her in on another assignment. Looks like she won’t be able to come home for another couple of days.”
The team all flinched as Bucky’s metal hand hit the table, making the objects on it go flying. They all took a step back as they watched the anger in him grow. He suddenly flipped the table over before stomping to the roof stairs. The rest of the team stood their watching, feeling bad for him. They all knew that Bucky was nervous about this and that it was hard for the man to be open like this, but there was nothing that could have been done.
Bucky was moody the rest of the days you were gone. No one could stand to be around him, mostly because they were a kind of afraid for their lives. When he wasn’t taking his feelings out in the training room, he was locked away in your shared bedroom. Four days after the planned proposal, you stumbled out of the quinjet. The mission had not been as easy as Fury made it out to be. You were successful, but you were now more exhausted than you ever thought possible, had a bleeding cut down your leg, and you were pretty sure your ankle was sprained.
Everyone was there waiting for you in the hanger and were not happy to see your condition as you stumbled from the quinjet. Bucky was the least amount of happy about your condition. Anger was again his best friend. But the more he watched you move closer to him, the more worried he became. Bucky rushed over, immediately sweeping you up into his arms, bridal style.
“Oh, doll,” he whispered, his eyes worriedly raking over your wounds.
“I’m fine, Buck,” you said quietly, clearly worn out. “Just tired.”
“Let’s get you to the med bay.”
The proposal was long forgotten in the midst of taking care of you. Yes, Bucky wanted to spend the rest of his life with you. But it was more important right now that you get healed. You were ordered off your leg for at least a month. Not making you very happy, but Bucky was. That meant that you were kept safe from harm and he could take care of you whenever he wasn’t away on missions.
Both Natasha and Wanda pushed Bucky to try and propose several times while you were benched and he was taking care of you. But nothing ever worked. He’d get called away on a last minute mission or you’d be too exhausted from physical therapy to do anything. He tried 4 times during the time you were benched, nothing worked. And Bucky was getting frustrated.
After about two and a half months, you were given the clearance to train and put weight on the leg again. And Bucky went back to planning another proposal. He knew he didn’t want to do the same thing he had planned to the last time, bad luck and all. So this time, he was going simpler. He planned a movie night, just the two of you. Bucky bought all your favorite treats and your favorite pizza. The only thing he forgot to mention, apparently, was the fact that it was a date. He was getting everything set up when you walked in with Tony, Bruce, and Sam.
“Hey, Bucky,” you smiled, coming up and pressing a kiss to his cheek. “Theses guys told me that they were bored tonight. So I invited them to our moving night. Is that okay?”
Bucky’s hands clenched into fists as he looked at the men behind him. He immediately reprimanded himself for not letting the team in on his plan. When his eyes came down to look at you, he was met with your best puppy dog face and he could never say no to that.
“Sure,” he grumbled. “Why not.”
“Thank, babe!” You gave him a peck on the lips before helping the others get settled.
The rest of the night, Bucky was constantly crumpling things in his hands while he felt like the small box in his pocket was burning a hole into thigh. You were too engrossed in the movie and talking to Tony to notice Bucky’s irritation. But Sam did, and simply just smirked at the man.
When the others had left and Bucky and you had started cleaning up, you began to notice his mood by his silence and way he was throwing things away.
“What’s wrong, babe?” You asked, folding up a blanket.
“Nothing,” Bucky answered, far too quickly.
“Are you sure?” You moved to stand in front of him, curling your arms around his waist. “Did Tony say something to upset you, or Sam even?”
“None of them said anything. I’m fine.” He pushed away from you, moving into the kitchen with the trash.
“I don’t believe you.” You followed him closely. “Why won’t you tell me the truth?”
“I am!” Bucky yelled, turning sharply to face you.
You jumped back, taken back by his reaction. Bucky had never raised his voice at you, ever. Tears pricked your eyes as you tried to calm your racing heart. Bucky’s anger slowly faded, being replaced by guilt as he watched you shrink into yourself.
“Doll, I—“ He went to apologize and reach out for you but you took another step back.
“I don’t know what happened tonight to make you mad,” your voice quivered as you spoke, “but that reaction was not okay.”
“I’m so sorry, babe. I didn’t mean to shout.”
“Yet you did.” You closed your eyes and took a deep breath. “I’m going to go sleep somewhere else tonight. Let you calm down.”
“No,” Bucky frantically shook his head. “Please, don’t.” He tried to reach for you again, but you walked away.
“Some sleep might do you some good, Buck. We’ll talk in the morning.”
And then you were gone. Bucky fell back against the fridge and slid down it, head buried in his hands. He’d really done it now. You were never going to accept his proposal now.
You spent the night in Natasha’s bed, since she was away on a mission. Though, you didn’t get much sleep. You never did when you weren’t with Bucky, and same with him. And it clearly showed on the both of you in the morning. Dark bags under the eyes, slow movements, blood shot eyes, and solemn expressions. To the rest of the team, it was clear that something happened last night. They were just all too scared to ask what.
Bucky spent most of the next day in the training room, taking out his aggression, while you spent most of the day in your and Bucky’s shared space in the compound. You were trying to rack your mind around why Bucky had been acting so ornery lately. You were in your room when Steve called you in for a mission. It was going to be a smaller mission with just you and Steve. You were getting ready when Bucky walked into the room.
“Y/N, we need to talk,” Bucky stated.
Those words cause your heart to crack a little. Those were never good to hear. “Yes, Buck?” You replied, still getting ready while trying to keep yourself together.
“There’s something that’s been on my mind lately and I— wait. Where are you going?”
“Steve’s asked me to join him on a mission.”
“Already? I know you were approved, but are you sure? I’m worried that you—“
“Well you don’t need to be. I’ll be fine.” You flung your backpack over shoulder. “Will you be?”
“Will I be?”
“You’ve been acting strange lately. And then you come in saying that we need to talk… Bucky…” You sighed. “Did you come in to break up with me?”
“Break up with you? No!” He shook his head. “I would never.”
“Then what’s going on? You’ve been so aggravated lately and yesterday… well… you’ve never shouted at me like that before… it honestly hurt.”
“Baby…” He walked up to you, setting a gentle hand on your cheek. “I’m so sorry about last night. I just… I’ve been trying to…” His hand fell down to his side with a sigh. “I was going to propose,” he mumbled.
“What?” Your jaw dropped.
“And it hasn’t been the first time I tried… I’m sorry for taking it out on you. I was just so frustrated that none of my plans have worked.”
“Y-you…. You’ve been trying to propose? For how long?”
“My first attempt was when you were suppose to come home after your long business trip. But then Fury sent you on a mission and you came home injured… I tried multiple other times, but then I was called away or you were too tired. Then last night, that’s why I ordered your favorite pizza and snacks. I just wanted it to be you and me and—”
“And then I invited the boys. Oh, Buck.” You engulfed him in a hug. “I’m so sorry. Will you ever forgive me?”
“I would always forgive you.”
You and Bucky let your lips meet for a kiss. Upon parting, you decided to be brave.
“So,” you whispered, “are you going to ask me?”
Bucky quickly retrieved the small box from his pocket and opened it as he got down on one knee. “Y/N L/N, I love you will everything I have. I can’t picture my life without you. Will you—“
“Hey, Y/N,” Steve called, barging into the room. “Are you— woah.” He froze, studying the situation in front of him. “Am I interrupting something?”
Bucky groaned, allowing his head to fall against your stomach. You laughed as you set your hands on Bucky’s head.
“You think?” You giggled.
“I’m just gonna— yeah,” Steve rushed as he ran out.
“Is he gone?” Bucky said into your stomach.
“He’s gone. Now hurry before the team shows up.”
He leaned back into his original position. “Y/N, will you marry me?”
“Yes.”
“Hallelujah,” Bucky muttered as he slipped the ring on your finger.
“Hurry up and kiss me so that we can escape before we’re never left alone again.”

Still Breathing
Read on Ao3 | Next Chapter
Summary: Six months after the defeat of Thanos, the world is still in chaos. The threat of the Flag Smashers combined with the new headstrong Captain America means it's time for Valencia Zicari to help save the world one more time. But, in doing so, she also has to pick up the pieces of a broken relationship.
Warnings: Major TFATWS spoilers, Swearing, Angst, Fluff, Slow-Burn, John Walker (just in general)
A/N: HHH, new fic time! TFATWS has been consuming my brain these past few weeks and it was only a matter of time before I made another oc and wrote for Bucky. I’ve had this in the works since the first episode but I’m super excited to finally be ready to start posting! This fic will be relatively short but I do also plan on doing a prequel fic eventually to further flush out my marvel oc, Valencia Zicari. I apologize that this starts off kinda slow, with just two phone calls at the beginning, but it will pick up a lot in the upcoming chapters. In the meantime if you have any questions or comments about the fic or Val’s story, don’t hesitate to send them my way! Hope you enjoy!

Chapter 1 - Your Number On Speed Dial
Bucky’s eyes shot open, his throat closing and lungs gasping for air. He felt the sweat covering his body, the thin blanket tangled between his legs. The cool metal of his dog tags swung against his chest as he sat up, chest heaving as he sucked in breaths and tried to regain his breathing. He looked around his surroundings, slowly calming down as he noticed he was in his apartment.
Another goddamn nightmare.
Realizing he was alone, Bucky instinctively reached up onto the chair next to him for his cellphone. He flipped open the phone, eyes squinting to adjust to the light of the small screen in front of him. He noticed the time, 3:08 am. While he knew that she would more than likely still be up and wouldn’t mind talking, he felt guilty for instinctively reaching out for her this late. Still, he let his hand press accept and after only two rings he heard her familiar voice pick up.
“Hi Buck,” she said with a smile, exhaustion evident in her voice.
“Hi,” he replied with a hoarse voice, sleep still clinging to his vocal chords. “Shouldn’t you be asleep?”
“I could ask you the same question,” she said with a small laugh. “But, yeah. Probably. I’ve been working my ass off trying to get in contact with Fury and nothing is working.”
“Not even through the SHIELD lines?”
She sighed, a hand coming up to rub at her temples. “I’ve tried, but he’s ‘on vacation’ and is only taking messages if they’re life or death.”
“I mean, shouldn’t he be able to make an exception for you? Given, y’know..”
“Unfortunately I lost the ‘you’re my adoptive daughter’ privilege when I decided to grow up and join the Avengers.” Bucky chuckled in response, his nightmare finally starting to fade from the back of his mind. “I’m just.. worried about Wanda. The whole situation still isn’t sitting right with me, especially since any information has been classified and no one at all can access it.”
“Val,” Bucky said quietly, his metal hand coming up to rub against the chain hanging around his neck. “When was the last time you took a break?”
He heard an audible sigh over the phone and a pause before she spoke up. “Not since half of the world disappeared.”
“Well, how about this. Thursday, you finally put all of that aside for a few hours and we can grab lunch. I’ll buy.”
She thought it over for a moment, Bucky’s breath hitching in his throat in the few seconds it took before she spoke up. “Yeah, that sounds nice. We can go to that sushi place you used to take me to.”
“Sounds perfect, doll. I’ll see you then. Now go get some rest.”
“You too, old man.”
~~~~~
Valencia stood in the common room of the compound, a scowl present on her face as she watched the tv. John Walker’s Good Morning America interview was playing at a low volume. She hadn’t even met the man yet and already hated him. Partly because of how he talked about Steve without knowing the first thing about him, and partly because every journalist in the state of New York had been contacting her in an attempt to interview her about the new Captain America. Pulling her eyes away from the screen, she noticed her phone vibrating to announce an incoming call. She answered, a smile tugging at her lips for the first time in the past day. “Hey Bucky.”
“Hi,” he said shortly. She could feel the anger in his voice. “Have you seen the news?”
“Absolutely,” she replied, her scowl returning to her face. “Everyone has been bothering me about it for the past day. I had to tell Pepper that if one more reporter asked to take a statement from me I’d throw someone out of a window.”
“Jeez. Little harsh, don’t ya think?”
“Probably,” she said with a small laugh.
“Hey, have you talked to Sam recently?”
“Yeah, I was just talking to him earlier before you called. He was telling me about having to go to Munich today, something about the Flag Smashers? I don’t know, he didn’t really give me a lot of information.”
“No, that's great. Thanks, doll. See you Thursday.”
“Alright, Buck. See you then.”
~~~~~
Any normal person would be astonished by the amount of trouble one person could get into in the span of 18 hours. But, in terms of being an Avenger, it’s just a normal Wednesday. Especially when it’s Sam and Bucky’s fault. But, Valencia still found a way to be freaking out when Pepper rushed into her room, shoving a phone into her face to announce that Bucky had a warrant out for his arrest. And had subsequently ended up in a Baltimore jail.
In under an hour she had flown down to the city and found the facility Bucky was being held in. She pulled open the door to the jail, eyes quickly scanning the crowd of people before landing on Bucky’s literal partner in crime.
She made a beeline straight for the dark haired man. “You want to explain to me what’s going on here, Sam Wilson?” Eyes narrowed, lips pulled into a tight line.
Upon seeing her he pushed himself out of his chair. “Val! How ya’ been? You been doing okay?”
“Oh cut the shit, Sam. You better have a good explanation for why I found out that Bucky not only had a warrant out for his arrest, but then ended up in a Baltimore jail leaving me to haul ass down here to figure out what in the hell is happening.”
“First, I need you to calm down. Promise me you won’t freak out?”
She glared at him. “Are you-”
“Val,” he said in a stern tone.
She let out a huff before nodding. “Alright, fine. I’m calm.”
“He helped me with that mission in Munich I told you about and then wanted to introduce me to someone in Baltimore. And he may have missed his therapy appointment in the process.”
“He missed-!” Val immediately yelled out, voice louder than anticipated, which drew the attention of the people around them. Sam put an arm around her shoulder and led the two of them over towards an unoccupied side of the room. “Sam, are you serious? He’s been doing so well! He put in so much effort to make sure he made the appointments and you let him go with you?”
“First of all, I told him repeatedly that I didn’t want him coming, but you know how stubborn he is.”
She let out a defeated sigh and dropped her hands to her sides. “So what do we do now?”
“Well lucky for you they’re actually releasing him.”
Before Val could reply she was cut off by the sound of heels clicking before a familiar voice spoke near them. “Sam. I’ve heard a lot about you.” She reached out to shake his hand. “I’m Dr. Raynor. I’m James’s therapist. It’s good to see you again, Valencia.”
Val gave her a smile. “Good to see you too, doc.”
“So nice to meet you. You two already know each other?”
“I took Bucky to the first few of his appointments to make sure that he would, y’know, actually go. But that was before..” she waved a hand in the air, “everything.”
Sam nodded. “Well thank you, Dr. Raynor, for getting him out.”
“Oh, that wasn’t me.”
From across the room a booming voice spoke up, instantly grabbing their attention. “Christina!” The three of them all turned in unison and were met with none other than the new Captain America himself, taking pictures with a bunch of fans. “It’s great to see you again.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me. You know him?” Sam spoke up with a frustrated sigh.
“Yeah, we did some field ops back in the day.”
“I heard you were working with Bucky, so I thought I’d step in.” Val watched as he approached the group, her arms instinctively crossing over her chest. “Miss Zicari, it’s nice to finally meet you. I’ve been trying to reach out for a formal introduction for several days now.”
“It’s Agent, actually. And unlike you I’ve had a lot of other pressing matters that required my attention.”
“Right. Well, anyway. Bucky’s not gonna be following a strict schedule any longer.”
“What?”
“We haven’t finished our work. Who authorized this?”
“Um,” John used both hands to gesture up towards himself. “He’s too valuable of an asset to have tied up.”
Val’s attention went from John to the sound of a metal door closing behind her. Her head turned towards the sound and she was met with none other than a familiar set of blue eyes side-eyeing the blonde man in front of her. She felt the corner of her mouth turn up in a half-smile as his head turned and saw hers. Almost instantly the token frown he wore at all times faded and turned into his own partial smile. She walked over to him, her arms finding their way around his neck subconsciously. “Hey, Buck,” she breathed as his arms wove around her middle, pulling their bodies flush together.
“Hey to you too,” he said with a small laugh. “Pepper finally let you leave the compound?”
She pulled away to look at him. “Less her letting me leave and more so her immediately getting me a flight and shoving me out the door when she found out you got arrested.”
“Alright lovebirds, break it up.” Dr. Raynor said from behind them. Val’s arms dropped to her side and before she had the chance to correct her, the woman spoke up again. “James, condition of your release, session now.” Bucky let out an audible groan, rolling his eyes slightly, to which Val couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle. “You too, Sam.”
“That’s okay, I’ll be out here with Val.”
“That wasn’t a request.”
She pulled her phone from the pocket of her leather jacket and noticed an incoming call. “Just go, I’ll be outside. I gotta take this anyway.” Val walked outside of the jailhouse, sliding a thumb across the screen to answer the call in the process. She partially paid attention to what Pepper was telling her as the new Captain America walked past her, obviously checking her out with a side-eye as she leaned against the chipped bricks. Her eyes narrowed at him as he turned to steal another glance her way before turning her eyes away and down the opposite side of the road.
“Yeah, he’s okay… no, I don’t know the specifics of how it works out with the pardon... I’ll keep you updated, but it doesn’t look like I’ll be back any time soon. I kinda feel like I’ll be joining the idiots on whatever they plan on doing next… Alright, I will. Keep me updated on the whole Westview situation and tell Morgan to stop stealing the snacks from my room. Oh, haha. Take care, Pepper.”
As she hung up the phone she saw the door next to her swing open with a visibly angry Sam walking out of it. Bucky trudged out a few seconds later, looking angry but more upset than the man in front of him. As the door started to close behind him he saw Val and walked over to her.
“Do you think Steve was wrong about me?” She could tell he was fighting back tears by the way his voice cracked at the end.
Her hands cupped his face. “Bucky, no, absolutely not. Why would you say that?”
He looked away, not able to look her in the eye. After all the nights they spent together, her talking him down from a nightmare, reassuring him and chasing the negative thoughts away, he couldn’t admit that part of him still felt that same way. “It.. doesn’t matter.”
“If it’s making you this upset, then yes it does.”
He let out a huff as her thumb began to lightly rub against the stubble on his cheek. “Sam shouldn’t have given up the shield.”
“I know, Buck, I know. But there’s nothing we can do now, so let’s just try to figure out what’s happening with..” she lifted a hand from his face and used it to make vague gestures around them. “Everything right now.”
The loud siren from a police cruiser halted their conversation, the sound making Val physically jump. She looked towards the source of the sound and scowled. This asshole again. “Gentlemen,” John’s eyes scanned Val’s figure quickly before adding, “and lady. Good to see you again.” Begrudgingly, she followed Sam and Bucky’s lead and walked towards the blonde haired man and his sidekick. “Look, if we divide ourselves we don’t stand a chance, you guys know that.”
Sam crossed his arms over his chest. “So what do you got?”
“Should she be hearing this?” John gestured to Val.
She scoffed. “I’m on board now, so out with it.”
“Alright. Well the leader’s name is Karli Morgenthau. We’ve been targeting civilians that have been helping Karli move from place to place. They geotagged a location, then scrambled the signal. But our satellites have found their symbol popping up in various displaced communities all across Central and Eastern Europe. We think that she's taking the medicine she just stole to one of these camps.”
“Well there’s been hundreds of those put up across the planet since The Blip,” Valencia interjected. “So I guess you’ll have to look real hard.”
“Good thing I have 20/20 vision, huh?” John shot back, annoyance prevalent in his voice.
“Where is she now, Walker? Do you know?” Bucky spoke up, patience quickly being stretched thin.
“No, we don’t know, Bucky,” Walker’s voice rose dramatically. “It’s only a matter of time before we find out.”
Bucky cocked his head to the side, eyes narrowing at the man in front of him. “Things are really tense for you, aren’t they Walker?” Val rested a gentle hand against Bucky’s chest, holding him back as a reminder not to do anything irrational- although she definitely wanted him to.
Sam approached the super soldier, putting a hand in the air to further make him back off. “Take it easy. Look, Walker’s right. It is imperative that we find them and stop them. But you guys have rules of engagement and all kinds of authorizations you have to get. We're free agents. We're more.. flexible. So it wouldn't make sense for us to work with you.”
The trio started to walk off before Walker stood up from the cruiser and spoke. “A word of advice, then.” The three of them turned to look at him once again. “Stay the hell out of my way.”
Knowing that it wasn’t worth it to get a final word in, Sam put a hand on either of their shoulders and pushed them to keep walking away. Once they were a reasonable distance down the street, Val turned to Bucky and noticed he was deep in thought. “What’s on your mind, Buck?” she asked with a hand coming up to rest on his shoulder.
“Well, I know what we have to do. When Isaiah said “my people”...” he trailed off, still staring ahead.
“Oh, don’t take that to heart. That’s not what he meant-” Sam tried to correct him before Bucky cut him off.
“No, he meant HYDRA.” He paused for a moment, feet coming to a stop as he looked between the pair next to him. “HYDRA used to be my people.”
“Bucky,” Val spoke up cautiously.”
Sam scoffed. “Not a chance.”
“Walker doesn’t have any leads.”
“I know where you’re going with this, no.”
“He knows all of HYDRA’s secrets. Don’t you remember Siberia.”
“Oh, you cannot be serious,” Val said as she dragged a tired hand over her face.
“So you’re just gonna sit in a room with this guy?”
Bucky hesitated for a moment, obviously not thinking about his idea that much ahead of time. “Y-yes.”
Val sighed, shaking her head slightly. “Out of all your ideas, this has got to be the dumbest.” She looked at Sam, who shrugged his shoulders and nodded. “Fine. Let’s go see Zemo.”

Stark Spangled Banner O/S: A Grievous Burden
Tumblr media
Summary: Post Sokovia Steve struggles to deal with the deep routed effects Wanda’s magic has on his mind as once more his dreams become haunted with the ghosts of his past.
Pairing: Steve Rogers x OFC Katie Stark
Warnings: Bad language, angst, night terrors...
A/N: As part of SSB’s Birthday celebrations I decided to publish this little one shot/drabble which sits between Ch 24- Like The Old Man Said...Together, and Ch 25- All Dressed Up And Nowhere To Go.
Tumblr media
Steve Rogers was no stranger to bad dreams. But his recurring nightmares had been a thing of the past, certainly since he’d started sleeping next to Katie at night. Her presence comforted him, allowed him to sleep for the most peacefully. But ever since getting back from Sokovia both Katie and Steve had been plagued by bad dreams. Katie’s seemed to be less vivid, mostly centred around the moment she had thought their time was up until Fury had shown up, but Steve’s subconscious for some reason didn’t seem to take him anywhere near Sokovia. Instead, he was catapulted back in time to various points during the war. It was unnerving for him but mostly, they were just that, bad dreams...until one night, for the first time he could remember, he suffered a full scale hallucinating night terror.
The first Katie knew of it was when he was pinning her down against the mattress and shielding her from something.
"Steve." she said gently. Nothing, he simply flattened himself against her further, right arm curled around her head.
"Stay down," he ordered firmly.
"What's going on?" she asked softly, still coming round from the sleep he had roused her from.
"Air strike, men in the hall.”  He said, turning to her "I'll head for the door, cause a distraction. You get to the bathroom, get in the tub, cover your head."
She listened intently, then realised what he had said. Air Strike. He must have been dreaming he was back in the war again. She let out a breath and relaxed, reaching up to take his face in her hands.
"Stevie, nobody's there. Everything's quiet."
"You can't hear them?" he looked at her frowning.
"Sweetheart, do you trust me?" she asked.
He nodded. “With my life, you know this Katie...”
"Ok, well, I promise you - there's no air raid, nobody in the hall."
For a moment, Steve just stared at her, his face wracked with confusion. Then, swallowing hard, he closed his eyes. After a moment he raised his head to look around before his face fell back on hers as her thumbs gently moved in long arcs down the sides of his face.
"Steve?"
With a shuddering breath, he pulled himself up, reaching for his shield by the bedroom door. Picking it up he listened for a moment before throwing the door open and he walked out into the hallway. Katie sat in bed listening to the sound of various other doors being opened and shut as he meticulously swept the whole of their floor, checking windows and closets until he ended up back in their room.
His back and chest were both glistening with sweat. He looked at her, his eyes wide before he went into the en-suite and she heard the tap running and the sound of water being splashed against what she assumed was his face. She gave him a few minutes before she followed him, where he was stood leaning forward, forehead pressed to the mirror, chest and shoulders heaving.
“Stevie…” she said gently, as she slipped both her arms round his waist, pressing a kiss to his bare, clammy shoulder. Her touch seemed to do the trick as he took one deep breath and turned to face her.
"Did I hurt you?" he asked his eyes looking at her as the palms of her hands spread across his lower back.
"Of course not." she said, shaking her head.
He wrapped his arms around her and she lay her head on his chest and felt his heartbeat as it gradually evened out. Neither of them spoke for a while.
“Your dreams… they’re getting worse." Katie said gently.
“It'll get better," he finally managed. “You know it's been bad before. It will fade after a while."
Katie knew from experience that everyone dealt with traumatic experiences differently. For example, Tony suffered panic attacks and went completely off the rails post both his soiree in the Afghanistan cave and New York. She tended to take a lot of things as they came and worry about them for a while but after screaming and crying would then give herself a kick up the ass to either change things or deal with them. Steve’s worry seemed to manifest itself two fold. He would either be suffering from the inability to stay calm and therefore would exercise, pounding out frustrations on either the pavement or the punching bags. And then there was this, the nightmares. Normally Katie would wake with his jostling but if she didn’t, he would always shake her awake if he needed her, as that was the agreement they had. She would then help him back to sleep either by talking or they would engage in some other un-coventional means of therapy until both of them were spent and satiated enough to return to slumber.
Katie gently took his hand and led him out of the bathroom turning off the light. As they reached the bed he waited until she was in it, pulling the duvet up over her before snagging a pillow and turning to go.
"Where do you think you're going?"
He shrugged. "Thought I'd camp out on the couch. I don't want to keep you awake."
“No way…” she said, throwing back the duvet “Come on.”
He sighed and climbed in as she opened her arms for him to settle his head on her chest, gently stroking his hair as he swallowed, his breathing steadying as her touch soothed him.
"Where were you this time?" she asked
"Azzano… I think” he sighed “To be honest with you, I saw so many things, the dreams now…they all blur into one.”
“You wanna talk about it?” He took a deep breath “It was just loud, and I was in a building and I couldn’t get out. It was so real. When I woke up I knew where I was. I knew who you were, but I just…I dunno…”
They lay in silence, Katie continually stroking his hair as he nuzzled into her closer. She kissed the top of his head and was pleased when about 10 minutes later she heard his breathing start to lower and his head became heavy. He had managed to drift off.
*****
The next night he woke with a start, but that was it. There was no walking or hallucinating, he merely woke from a bad dream and climbed out of bed for a glass of water. When he came back, there was no talking, but he sought solace in his girl in another way, his lips kissing her hard, his hands reaching out and roving over every bit of her body he could find and he fucked her, hard, losing himself completely. They lay afterwards, sweaty foreheads pressed together and Katie simply held him close as they both came round. Eventually he moved off, pulled her to him and they fell asleep, limbs tanged around one another, his hold tight.
The next few nights he was peaceful, and Katie was hopeful that the terrors had passed, but then, four nights after the first incident he broke his hand.
Captain America could put his fist through a two-by-four with nothing worse than slightly reddened knuckles - but Steve Rogers’  hand hadn't been in a fist. Katie had woken to his hoarse cry of “Buck!!!”, in time to see his outstretched, fingers slamming straight through the plasterboard and into a metal stud in the wall as he flailed out of bed, reaching for a man who had fallen some seventy years earlier.
Katie scrambled over the bed like a shot as he was yelling out for Bucky again and again as he knelt among scattered pieces of plaster and wood, his left arm buried inside the wall up to the shoulder.
"Steve," she tried, but he didn't respond, eyes fixed in a thousand-yard stare, face crumpled with an agony that was more than physical, breath hitching and ragged. She felt the tears spring into her eyes and she was just about to ask FRIDAY to send Tony to help when she heard the door to their penthouse burst open and a few moments later Thor strode into the bedroom dressed in a pair of black sweatpants, hammer in his hand.
“I heard the Captain yell, and…” he trailed off as he took in the situation at a glance and then crouched next to Katie.
“He’s dreaming…” she said gently, “He’s dreaming about Bucky, his friend, falling…”
Thor frowned absently, brushing his fingers across the captain's temples as though he was trying to work out a problem. Then abruptly, he rose and was gone, moving almost silently through the darkness.
Whilst he was gone Katie managed to gently work Steve’s arm out of the wall. His broken hand lay twitching in her lap and she was horribly aware that they would need to set the bones before they healed wrong. Thankfully, Thor wasn’t gone long, and he was not alone when he returned, hand firm around Wanda's shoulder. The girl's eyes were wide and her hair was tangled - obviously she had been sleeping.
"Thor," Katie began to protest as she glanced round at Steve. The last thing he would want would be to come back to reality in the middle of some kind of impromptu party.
Thor held up a hand, pausing her even as he turned his full attention to Wanda
"Do you see?" he asked gravely. "Do you understand now what The Vision told you?"
Trembling, Wanda shook her head even as she went to her knees beside Steve. He was still unresponsive, but his breathing was beginning to laboriously even out and Katie knew he was fighting for control. She started to sweep her hand up and down his back in long, firm strokes in the hope it would bring him back round.
Thor knelt too, sounding as though he were some kind of instructor. "When you allowed Stark's fears to work against him," he began patiently, "you found his weakness and dug deep."
Wanda nodded slowly.
"Our Captain carries a grievous burden as well," Thor continued, "He has been sorely wounded and works to heal, but your incautious workings have torn his memories open."
“Thor…” Katie said gently as a horror stricken look crossed Wanda’s face.
"I am sorry," she whispered. "I didn't know. How can I fix it?"
For the first time, Thor hesitated. "My brother would have known," he admitted in a low voice. "He had the skill, when it pleased him to use it." He paused again, and then continued, hesitating slightly. "You must consider carefully, and proceed as seems good to you."
Biting her lip, Wanda looked up at Katie, her stricken eyes locked onto hers.
“If you can, remind him where he is," Katie said gently. “Just bring him round?”
Hesitantly, uncertainly, Wanda pointed and curled her fingers before Steve’s face and closed her eyes. Tendrils of red light flickered from her hands to his temples, and Katie tensed involuntarily. For a moment, nothing happened. Then Steve’s eyes flew open, and his uninjured hand darted up faster than sight to lock around Wanda's wrist, breaking the connection. She squeaked, startled, and froze.
“Steve…” Katie touched his arm causing him to flinch. It took him a second and then he seemed to realize where he was and what was going on. He let go of Wanda's wrist, and looked around at Katie, then Thor hovering behind the young Sokovian, and finally the familiar surroundings of their bedroom. Eventually he looked back at Wanda for a long moment before nodding once.
"Thanks."
A tear slid down her cheek. "I'm sorry," she whispered hoarsely. "I tried to put everything back in place, but I don't know how."
"Can't fix everything," he assured her, with a twisted smile. His old Brooklyn accent came out very strong in this unguarded moment. "And I wouldn't wantcha t' try. There's things in my head you shouldn't ever hafta see."
Wanda wrapped both her arms around herself. Her eyes still looked haunted. "He was like your brother, wasn't he?" she quavered.
Steve bowed his head as Thor dropped a gentle arm round her shoulders.
"We have all lost brothers," he rumbled, looking at her. "We know your pain. You do not face this alone."
Katie could feel Steve was quivering, exhausted beyond words though he wouldn't show it for the world, and all she wanted to do in that moment was to bind up his hand and then put him to bed. As she looked up to suggest to the others they might want to go she was surprised to see Wanda had squared her jaw with determination and she reached out once more.
"I can fix this, at least."
Steve's hurt hand suddenly glowed with red fire. He jumped, surprised, and then watched with fascination as the crooked fingers began re-align themselves. When the bones were straight again, the fire flickered out, and Wanda staggered to her feet to go, Thor right behind her.
“You ok for a moment?” Katie asked Steve and he nodded. She followed the two of them into the hall and gave a short groan as she saw the door that led to the stairs (which were never used) had been completely kicked off its hinges.
“Sorry.” Thor said, picking up the heavy door “I heard the screams and…well, I didn’t know what was going on.” “Just prop it up as best you can…I’ll let you out in the elevator.”
He propped it up, and dragged the sofa over towards it for good measure.
“I really am sorry…” Wanda whispered, tears in her eyes.
“I know, and so does he.” Katie said, giving her a hug. “He will be fine…” Her attention then turned to Thor as she gave the God a hug. “Thank you.” “Any time Little Stark.” He breathed into her hair, before the 2 of them stepped into the elevator.
Katie looked around, trying to think about how they could explain a broken door plus a hole in the wall to Tony, then she realised she didn’t care. She headed into the kitchen, rummaging through the first aid kit for an elastic bandage to keep his fingers straight and wrapped up safely whilst his fast healing worked its magic.
He was sat on the side of the bed when she re-entered the room, his injured hand cradled in his other.
“Here…” she said, and she gently took his hand as he surrendered to her ministrations.
“Is Wanda ok?” he asked gently.
“Yeah, but I’m more concerned about you.” she said, laying his hand down gently onto my lap. “Baby…” “I’m sorry.” He said softly, laying his head against hers.
“What for?” “This…for scaring you?” “Stop it.” She said sternly “I love you, you idiot, I just want you to be ok.” “I will be…” he smiled softly, his lips catching hers “Given time.”
The next day, Katie dragged Steve out for a walk in Central Park, but first she spoke to Tony about the door and the wall. He was surprisingly sympathetic, and didn’t mention the issue to Steve once. By the time Steve and Katie returned home that afternoon both were fixed, the only evidence any repairs had taken place was the smell of fresh paint and plaster which lingered in the apartment for a few days. What thankfully didn’t linger were Steve’s night terrors. Katie didn’t know what it was that Wanda did, but his bones healed straight and it seemed that his mind had healed somewhat straight too. Whilst he persisted with the odd bad dream, they were getting less and less frequent, and there was no repeat of the two hallucinations he had suffered which was a relief to her, as she knew with time and patience and rest, the dreams would stop as well.
