How big companies risk obsolescence without generative AI
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/how-big-companies-risk-obsolescence-without-generative-ai/
How big companies risk obsolescence without generative AI
Generative AI is no longer a futuristic concept—it’s a transformative force reshaping today’s most innovative industries. Companies like Klarna and J.P. Morgan are making bold moves by integrating Generative AI into their operations, challenging the status quo and enabling unprecedented efficiency and creativity.
This shift isn’t merely an incremental upgrade; it’s a paradigm change that allows organizations to automate complex processes, generate creative content, and make data-driven decisions more effectively than ever before.
Yet despite its clear potential, many large companies hesitate, caught in the throes of Clayton Christensen’s “Innovator’s Dilemma.”
They are torn between the safety of their profitable legacy systems and the uncertain but promising path of investing in disruptive technologies like Generative AI. For these companies, the risk extends beyond lagging behind competitors; it’s the danger of becoming irrelevant in a landscape that rewards agility and punishes complacency.
In today’s fast-paced market, comfort zones have become liabilities. Companies that cling to legacy approaches while ignoring the winds of change are playing a dangerous game—one that could end with them being outpaced, outperformed, and ultimately pushed out of the market.
Disruption is relentless: Comfort zones are a liability
Christensen’s “Innovator’s Dilemma” illustrates how companies often lose their edge by focusing on existing products while ignoring larger shifts. Generative AI represents one of these shifts, transforming industries with innovations that enhance efficiency and open new possibilities.
Klarna’s recent decision to move away from well-established SaaS platforms like Salesforce and Workday exemplifies this transformation. By developing an internal AI-driven solution, they are not only replicating but surpassing decades of customization and workflow automation offered by industry giants.
This bold move challenges the narrative of SaaS ‘stickiness’ and highlights how companies that remain in their comfort zones risk being outpaced by more agile competitors.
Consider how Blockbuster, a giant in its heyday, ignored the rise of digital streaming while Netflix evolved from a niche DVD rental service into a streaming powerhouse. Companies that fail to adopt Generative AI today risk a similar fate. Disruptive technologies don’t pause for established players—they redefine industries and leave behind those who can’t or won’t adapt.
Malcolm Gladwell’s “The Tipping Point” emphasizes that transformative shifts often begin subtly, with small, almost unnoticeable changes that eventually reach critical mass.
Many companies entrenched in their comfort zones overlook these initial signs, dismissing them as inconsequential until the tipping point is reached and transformation becomes unavoidable. Finding a balance between existing customer needs and innovation is essential for long-term survival.
Balancing current needs with future vision
While addressing current customer needs is important, it’s equally critical for companies to anticipate future market demands. Generative AI technologies often start small, catering to niche markets or solving problems not immediately apparent to mainstream customers.
However, as these technologies evolve, they can redefine entire industries. Gladwell discussed how niche innovations, initially overlooked or even ridiculed, can suddenly become the next big thing when they reach a tipping point, rapidly gaining acceptance and disrupting established markets.
Focusing solely on present needs can leave companies vulnerable when market dynamics shift. To stay competitive, leaders must balance immediate demands with a clear vision for the future, ensuring their strategies include investments in disruptive technologies like Generative AI.
Klarna’s pivot to Generative AI illustrates the importance of this balance. While traditional SaaS platforms had been integral to their operations, Klarna recognized the potential of AI to streamline processes and reduce complexity.
By standardizing workflows and leveraging AI, they’ve created a more agile solution that meets current demands while positioning themselves for future growth. This move underscores Gladwell’s point about niche innovations gaining rapid acceptance when they reach a tipping point.
AI implementation: Costs and complexity
Having a vision for Generative AI is only part of the equation; the real test lies in execution, where costs and complexities can become formidable barriers. Implementing Generative AI requires a comprehensive, multi-year strategy.
The expenses associated with AI software, infrastructure, and staff training are significant hurdles that can deter many organizations. According to a 2023 report by McKinsey & Company, companies investing in AI can expect to allocate 20-30% of their IT budgets toward AI initiatives.
Klarna’s success wasn’t just about adopting new technology; it involved reengineering their tech stack from the ground up and embracing standardization to reduce complexity.
This approach demanded a significant commitment but resulted in a more agile and cost-effective system. Their experience demonstrates that while the barriers to AI implementation are real, they can be overcome with a strategic, long-term vision.
Integrating Generative AI is not just about acquiring technology—it’s about embedding it into the organizational DNA and aligning it with strategic business goals. This involves substantial investments not only in technology but also in people and processes, requiring a commitment to long-term change rather than short-term fixes.
Organizations that hesitate because of these initial hurdles risk being left behind as others recognize the potential and reach the tipping point where Generative AI shifts from experimental to essential.
Established organizations often value stability and incremental improvements. Generative AI challenges these norms, requiring businesses to rethink how value is created and delivered. The psychological barrier—the fear of undermining one’s own success—can paralyze decision-making and lead companies to stick with what’s safe rather than explore new frontiers.
Success amid challenges: J.P. Morgan
Despite these challenges, companies like J.P. Morgan are successfully navigating this complex landscape. J.P. Morgan has launched an AI-powered chatbot for its research analysts, streamlining access to insights and data across the organization.
This initiative reflects a broader strategy to embed Generative AI within the company’s operations, enhancing decision-making and fostering a culture of agility and innovation. By taking a proactive approach, J.P. Morgan is not just adopting Generative AI—it’s transforming how it does business, setting a blueprint for other companies on how to integrate AI successfully.
While measuring success in Generative AI can be challenging due to the early nature of the technology, the initial benefits are already reshaping business operations. One significant hurdle is establishing clear ROI and KPIs, as many AI projects are still in exploratory stages.
However, a Deloitte survey found that over 50% of early AI adopters reported a positive return on their investment. Leaders need to invest with a long-term vision, understanding that while specific metrics may still be evolving, the transformative impact of AI is increasingly undeniable.
The flexibility of small players: How nimble newcomers are disrupting the status quo
While established companies are adapting, smaller, more agile newcomers are often best positioned to capitalize on Generative AI’s potential quickly. Without the burden of legacy systems and entrenched processes, these newcomers can experiment, adapt, and scale AI initiatives more effectively.
Companies like Writesonic and Gamma.app are leveraging Generative AI to reshape industries such as content creation and business communication. They exemplify how agile players can outmaneuver larger, slower competitors.
As Gladwell describes in “The Tipping Point,” these innovations can shift from fringe concepts to mainstream essentials, catching larger companies off guard when they reach that critical tipping point.
Klarna’s bold strategy doesn’t just signify a shift for one company; it poses critical questions for the entire SaaS industry. If AI enables enterprises to replace decades of deep integration with more agile, customized solutions, the traditional ‘stickiness’ of SaaS platforms is under threat.
This development forces CIOs and IT leaders to reconsider their reliance on established providers and explore the potential of in-house AI-driven solutions. The financial stakes are high, as enterprises could save millions annually by reducing dependence on costly SaaS products.
According to Gartner, organizations can reduce operational costs by 20 – 30% by 2025 through AI-driven efficiencies. Klarna’s example may well be the tipping point that accelerates a broader move away from traditional SaaS, emphasizing the urgent need for companies to adapt or risk obsolescence.

Ethical and social considerations
As companies embrace Generative AI, it’s crucial to address ethical and social considerations. Issues such as data privacy, security, and algorithmic bias can pose significant risks if not properly managed.
A 2022 survey by PwC revealed that over 55% of consumers are concerned about how companies use their personal data. Implementing robust data governance policies and ethical guidelines is essential to build trust with stakeholders and ensure compliance with regulations like GDPR.
Moreover, the impact of AI on the workforce cannot be ignored. While AI can automate routine tasks, it may also lead to job displacement. Companies should invest in retraining and upskilling employees to work alongside AI technologies, fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptation.
Taking action: A roadmap for embracing generative AI
To move from theory to practice, companies must take deliberate steps to integrate Generative AI into their operations. Here’s how leaders can begin this transformative journey:
Gain executive buy-in: Executive-level support is critical for success.
Conduct an AI readiness assessment: Evaluate your organization’s current capabilities, identify gaps, and set clear objectives for AI adoption.
Develop a strategic AI roadmap: Align AI initiatives with business goals, prioritize use cases, and create a phased implementation plan.
Start with pilot projects: Implement small-scale AI projects to demonstrate value, set measurable metrics, and iterate based on insights.
Invest in talent and training: Upskill existing employees, hire specialized talent, and foster a culture of innovation.
Address ethical and governance considerations: Establish ethical guidelines, implement governance frameworks, and engage stakeholders transparently.
Leverage partnerships and collaborations: Collaborate with AI vendors, join industry consortia, and engage academic institutions.
Monitor and measure impact: Set clear KPIs, conduct regular reviews, and scale successful projects.
Plan for long-term sustainability: Stay informed on AI developments, budget for ongoing investment, and anticipate future needs.
By following this roadmap, companies can navigate the complexities of Generative AI adoption, mitigate risks, and position themselves for long-term success in an increasingly AI-driven world.
The path forward: Embrace generative AI or face extinction
The lessons from the “Innovator’s Dilemma” speak volumes: focusing solely on today’s successes without investing in disruptive technologies like Generative AI is a risky bet. AI isn’t just another tool; it’s a fundamental shift in how businesses operate.
Companies that fully integrate Generative AI into their operations will not only survive but thrive, setting the pace for their industries. In contrast, those who fail to adapt risk meeting the same fate as Blockbuster and BlackBerry—left behind in a world increasingly driven by AI that rewards the bold and punishes the complacent.
Jim Collins, in “Good to Great,” emphasizes that truly great companies continuously evolve and align their strategies with the future. Klarna’s decision to harness Generative AI reflects this principle, demonstrating proactive leadership and a commitment to innovation.
Their approach serves as a blueprint for other companies: not just to adopt new technology but to redefine their operations and strategies around it. Without such commitment, companies risk stagnation—going from good to gone.
Conclusion
For leaders, the message is simple: adapt, innovate, and lead, or risk becoming a cautionary tale. Klarna and J.P. Morgan’s transformations illustrate that the future belongs to those willing to embrace change and leverage disruptive technologies to their advantage. The decision isn’t just about adopting new technology; it’s about ensuring your company is poised to excel tomorrow.
As Generative AI continues to advance rapidly, the window of opportunity to lead is narrowing. By taking proactive steps—assessing readiness, developing strategic roadmaps, investing in talent, and more—companies can overcome barriers and seize the transformative potential of AI. Embrace the change because Generative AI won’t wait, and neither should you. The time to act is now.

i don't mean to sound ungrateful, but as a content creator on this site, there's a part of me that's like. they absolutely just stole my work.
i'm not, like, unaware that tumblr has been shuffling downhill for years now. sometimes i play with the idea of switching platforms, turning myself into the shark. i often get tens of thousands of notes - i could be "doing numbers" on a platform that actually pays me to do so. i could have statistics that i could use to sell myself, i could rebrand and make content pay-to-play and make brand deals. i could have the other life, i mean.
but i don't want to. i like the quiet nature of tumblr. i like that it still feels like i'm writing poetry, not like i'm fulfilling ad spots. i like the community, and that i can sometimes still take someone by surprise and write something that really speaks to them. i like the tags and reading things like oh of course it's fucking inkskinned i love you inkskinned you gay mess. my girlfriend recently told me that people tag things "inkskinned" because they assume it is similar to tagging "creative writing". that's wild. i made this word up when i was 19, and have always assumed people tag me in things so i read it (and i often do). i have nothing but love and gratitude for you all, for this tiny scoop of family.
and i haven't made any money off it. i had opportunities, and i turned them down. i could have sold this thing like a thousand times. i thought about moving my work elsewhere - over and over and over i thought about it. i weighed each option specifically. but my tumblr felt like ... it's for you guys, only. if you're still here and reading this, you deserve to do it for free.
tumblr has now, most likely, skimmed my work (and yours) in order to make money. i will never see a single cent for that violation. something about landlords, i guess - my work pays their rent.
i just lost my job on valentine's day, and am working on scrambling for solutions. i am writing this to a blog that they will probably scrape with AI. and like, what number to do you think it was? do you think it was only a couple hundred thousand? no way it was close to a million, right? my time, effort, energy - it belongs to someone else now. how many silver pieces for them to completely sell out their user base.
and it's kind of like - funny? when it isn't very-sad. because i personally don't know what to do, ya know? i might as well move to a different platform, where my efforts are ai-scraped but could eventually pay me. where i know my privacy is the cost - but it could result in actual money. anyway. i need to figure out how i'm paying for meds. i need to email like six people about COBRA benefits.
my work is powering someone else's AI. it will be a beautiful fabricated poem, made from words i've already said.

"As a Deaf man, Adam Munder has long been advocating for communication rights in a world that chiefly caters to hearing people.
The Intel software engineer and his wife — who is also Deaf — are often unable to use American Sign Language in daily interactions, instead defaulting to texting on a smartphone or passing a pen and paper back and forth with service workers, teachers, and lawyers.
It can make simple tasks, like ordering coffee, more complicated than it should be.
But there are life events that hold greater weight than a cup of coffee.
Recently, Munder and his wife took their daughter in for a doctor’s appointment — and no interpreter was available.
To their surprise, their doctor said: “It’s alright, we’ll just have your daughter interpret for you!” ...
That day at the doctor’s office came at the heels of a thousand frustrating interactions and miscommunications — and Munder is not isolated in his experience.
“Where I live in Arizona, there are more than 1.1 million individuals with a hearing loss,” Munder said, “and only about 400 licensed interpreters.”
In addition to being hard to find, interpreters are expensive. And texting and writing aren’t always practical options — they leave out the emotion, detail, and nuance of a spoken conversation.
ASL is a rich, complex language with its own grammar and culture; a subtle change in speed, direction, facial expression, or gesture can completely change the meaning and tone of a sign.
“Writing back and forth on paper and pen or using a smartphone to text is not equivalent to American Sign Language,” Munder emphasized. “The details and nuance that make us human are lost in both our personal and business conversations.”
His solution? An AI-powered platform called Omnibridge.
“My team has established this bridge between the Deaf world and the hearing world, bringing these worlds together without forcing one to adapt to the other,” Munder said.
Trained on thousands of signs, Omnibridge is engineered to transcribe spoken English and interpret sign language on screen in seconds...
“Our dream is that the technology will be available to everyone, everywhere,” Munder said. “I feel like three to four years from now, we're going to have an app on a phone. Our team has already started working on a cloud-based product, and we're hoping that will be an easy switch from cloud to mobile to an app.” ...
At its heart, Omnibridge is a testament to the positive capabilities of artificial intelligence. "

To test an alpha version of his invention, Munder welcomed TED associate Hasiba Haq on stage.
“I want to show you how this could have changed my interaction at the doctor appointment, had this been available,” Munder said.
He went on to explain that the software would generate a bi-directional conversation, in which Munder’s signs would appear as blue text and spoken word would appear in gray.
At first, there was a brief hiccup on the TED stage. Haq, who was standing in as the doctor’s office receptionist, spoke — but the screen remained blank.
“I don’t believe this; this is the first time that AI has ever failed,” Munder joked, getting a big laugh from the crowd. “Thanks for your patience.”
After a quick reboot, they rolled with the punches and tried again.
Haq asked: “Hi, how’s it going?”
Her words popped up in blue.
Munder signed in reply: “I am good.”
His response popped up in gray.
Back and forth, they recreated the scene from the doctor’s office. But this time Munder retained his autonomy, and no one suggested a 7-year-old should play interpreter.
Munder’s TED debut and tech demonstration didn’t happen overnight — the engineer has been working on Omnibridge for over a decade.
“It takes a lot to build something like this,” Munder told Good Good Good in an exclusive interview, communicating with our team in ASL. “It couldn't just be one or two people. It takes a large team, a lot of resources, millions and millions of dollars to work on a project like this.”
After five years of pitching and research, Intel handpicked Munder’s team for a specialty training program. It was through that backing that Omnibridge began to truly take shape...
“Our dream is that the technology will be available to everyone, everywhere,” Munder said. “I feel like three to four years from now, we're going to have an app on a phone. Our team has already started working on a cloud-based product, and we're hoping that will be an easy switch from cloud to mobile to an app.”
In order to achieve that dream — of transposing their technology to a smartphone — Munder and his team have to play a bit of a waiting game. Today, their platform necessitates building the technology on a PC, with an AI engine.
“A lot of things don't have those AI PC types of chips,” Munder explained. “But as the technology evolves, we expect that smartphones will start to include AI engines. They'll start to include the capability in processing within smartphones. It will take time for the technology to catch up to it, and it probably won't need the power that we're requiring right now on a PC.”
At its heart, Omnibridge is a testament to the positive capabilities of artificial intelligence.
But it is more than a transcription service — it allows people to have face-to-face conversations with each other. There’s a world of difference between passing around a phone or pen and paper and looking someone in the eyes when you speak to them.
It also allows Deaf people to speak ASL directly, without doing the mental gymnastics of translating their words into English.
“For me, English is my second language,” Munder told Good Good Good. “So when I write in English, I have to think: How am I going to adjust the words? How am I going to write it just right so somebody can understand me? It takes me some time and effort, and it's hard for me to express myself actually in doing that. This technology allows someone to be able to express themselves in their native language.”
Ultimately, Munder said that Omnibridge is about “bringing humanity back” to these conversations.
“We’re changing the world through the power of AI, not just revolutionizing technology, but enhancing that human connection,” Munder said at the end of his TED Talk.
“It’s two languages,” he concluded, “signed and spoken, in one seamless conversation.”"

The current U.S. power grid is not fully prepared to handle the rising demand from AI, EVs, and crypto without significant upgrades. While the grid is evolving, challenges include aging infrastructure, transmission bottlenecks, and the need for more renewable energy integration. Here’s a breakdown of key factors:
1. Capacity vs. Demand Growth
• The grid has enough total generation capacity today, but localized demand spikes (like AI data centers or EV clusters) can strain certain regions.
• By 2035, electricity demand could rise by 15-25%, requiring hundreds of gigawatts (GW) of new capacity.
• Many utilities are already struggling to build out transmission lines fast enough to keep up with demand.
2. Grid Reliability & Stress Points
• AI & Data Centers: Large data centers are being built in regions where power supply is already constrained (e.g., Northern Virginia, Texas).
• EV Charging Peaks: If too many EVs charge at the same time, local grids could experience voltage drops or blackouts.
• Extreme Weather: The grid is already vulnerable to extreme heat, storms, and wildfires, which could worsen with climate change.
3. Solutions & Grid Upgrades
• Transmission Expansion: The U.S. needs to build more high-voltage transmission lines to move power from wind/solar farms to urban areas.
• Battery Storage & AI for Grid Management: Advanced battery storage can smooth out supply-demand mismatches, and AI can optimize grid operations.
• Decentralized Energy: Microgrids, rooftop solar, and community battery projects can reduce strain on the centralized grid.
• Smart Charging for EVs: Managed charging (incentivizing off-peak charging) can help distribute demand more evenly.
Can the Grid Handle It?
• Short-term (2025-2030): The grid will face localized stress, especially in high-demand regions. Rolling blackouts or infrastructure failures could occur if upgrades don’t keep pace.
• Mid- to Long-term (2030+): If investments in transmission, renewables, and smart grid technology accelerate, the grid can handle these changes, but delays in modernization could lead to reliability issues.

10 Best Data Integration Tools (September 2024)
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/10-best-data-integration-tools-september-2024/
10 Best Data Integration Tools (September 2024)
Data is the core component of effective organizational decision-making. Today, companies generate more data – over 145 zettabytes in 2024 – through sources like social media, Internet-of-Things (IoT) sources, and point-of-sale (POS) systems.
The challenge? Compiling data from these disparate systems into one unified location.
This is where data integration comes in!
Data integration is the process of combining information from multiple sources to create a consolidated dataset. While essential, it’s often time-consuming, resource-intensive, and prone to error when done manually.
Data integration tools can simplify this process, allowing businesses to streamline workflows and gain more actionable insights faster.
This blog will explore the benefits of data integration tools, the different types available, and the best tools to consider in 2024.
Benefits of Data Integration Tools
Data integration tools are designed to unify disparate data into a centralized system, making it easier for businesses to analyze and use for forecasting, marketing, and operational decisions..
This is important because 3 out of 4 organizations suffer from data silos, leading to inefficient decision-making due to incomplete information. Data integration tools consolidate this data, breaking down silos.
Data often comes in different formats depending on the source. These tools help standardize this data, ensuring consistency. Moreover, data integration tools can help companies save $520,000 annually by automating manual data pipeline creation.
Further, data integration tools create a unified, single source of truth for an organization’s data, leading to more accurate reporting, better data sharing, and improved decision-making.
Types of Data Integration Tools
Data integration tools come in various forms, with each catering to different organizational needs:
On-Premise Tools: These software are installed on and operated from a customer’s own in-house/local servers. They offer greater control over data security but can be resource-intensive.
Cloud-Based Tools: Hosted in the cloud or online, these tools offer more flexibility and scalability than on-premise tools.
Open-Source Tools: These tools are available free of charge and usually require coding expertise.

The rapid growth of the technology industry and the increasing reliance on cloud computing and artificial intelligence have led to a boom in the construction of data centers across the United States. Electric vehicles, wind and solar energy, and the smart grid are particularly reliant on data centers to optimize energy utilization. These facilities house thousands of servers that require constant cooling to prevent overheating and ensure optimal performance. Unfortunately, many data centers rely on water-intensive cooling systems that consume millions of gallons of potable (“drinking”) water annually. A single data center can consume up to 3 million to 5 million gallons of drinking water per day, enough to supply thousands of households or farms. The increasing use and training of AI models has further exacerbated the water consumption challenges faced by data centers.
[...]
The drinking water used in data centers is often treated with chemicals to prevent corrosion and bacterial growth, rendering it unsuitable for human consumption or agricultural use. This means that not only are data centers consuming large quantities of drinking water, but they are also effectively removing it from the local water cycle. Dry air reduces the risk of corrosion and electrical issues in the sensitive equipment in the data centers. The lack of humidity in water-stressed regions, such as the American Southwest, makes it an attractive location for data centers. This means that the regions in which it is “best” to locate a data center due to its arid environment has the highest marginal cost in terms of water consumption. In the Phoenix area alone, there are 58 data centers. If each data center uses 3 million gallons of water per day for cooling, that equates to over 170 million gallons of drinking water used per day for cooling data centers. This massive consumption of drinking water for data center cooling puts a strain on the already fragile water supply and raises ethical questions about prioritizing the needs of tech giants over the basic needs of residents and agriculture.
[...]
Optimizing renewable power with AI and data centers at the expense of increasing water consumption is not a sustainable solution. Prioritizing one aspect of sustainability, such as reducing carbon emissions, while neglecting another crucial resource like water creates an illusion of sustainability. In reality, this can lead to unsustainable practices that can have severe unintended consequences for individuals and farmers, especially in water-stressed regions.

A couple of years ago, I attended a (virtual) conference where one of the main topics was the impact of so-called 'AI' tools on my particular industry. I work in scholarly publishing (on the publisher side -- I know, I know; for what it's worth, I am at least at a company that's actively trying to drive reform, is anti-impact factor, tries to reinforce the value of the work over the journal name, etc) and the application of 'generative AI' to facilitate plagiarism/fake papers is an obvious risk in this sector. Such software could easily be used to overwhelm the (meagre) defences journals have against such things, especially with the pressures placed on academics to get their work into 'high impact' publications above all else. The threat of 'paper-mills' (operations paid to seek publication by fraudulent means) ramping up via the use of ChatGP was clear and present amid those heady days of the initial hype-push.
What's stuck with me from that conference is a panel participant pointing out that 'AI' hasn't created any *new* problems; it's just accelerated existing ones. That is, fraud in science and science publishing has been an issue as long as scholarly publishing has existed as an industry. You don't need a fancy tool to generate you a fake paper. It helps, no doubt, but it's not a necessary step. And yes, it makes detection harder. But the actual solution here -- the way to put a stop to fake papers, dodgy authorship claims, and all the other variations on trying to beef up an academic's publication record for career gains -- doesn't lie in some technological arms-race between plagiarism-detection and paper-fabrication. We need to change the culture. We need to put a stop to the rewards for this kind of behaviour, by assessing academics by the actual value and quality of their research, without the proxy-step provided by place of publication.
(For the uninitiated, it is a huge problem in science that certain journals -- such as the big three of Nature, Cell and Science -- are seen as *the* place where groundbreaking research is published. Not only does this expose the English-language bias within global research, it creates the idea that to 'make it', you must publish somewhere like that, rather than just, you know, doing good solid work. Journals, big name or not, also have a history of selecting for headline-making research. So on the one hand, institutions are judging their employees' careers by their citations, not their work, and on the other, you absolutely cannot trust journals not to get dollar-signs in their eyes when someone comes along claiming that e.g. a certain vaccine actually causes an unrelated health condition. To pick a deliberate, very-specific example. On top of all this, peer review is *terrible* at catching faked results because it has to be approached in good-faith. Most of the time, fraud is only caught in hindsight, once the work has had time to circulate in the community, at which point wider damage has been done.)
Now, one of the reasons I haven't blogged much about so-called 'AI' is that my hatred for it is pre-rational. What I mean is, I hate 'generative AI' with the power of a thousand burning suns. I hate it on a conceptual level. The idea of feeding real people's work, their art, into a machine and have it churn out an approximation of that same work and art is abhorrent to me. I view it as a mockery of skills I have devoted my life to. If it could produce truly breathtaking imagery and crystal-sharp prose, I would still feel the same revulsion at the thought of removing intent from an act of communication, at the idea we should be content with bathetic mirrors in place of engaging with actual human beings and what they can do.
Separate from this, I believe there is good cause to be highly doubtful about the tools that have been pushed on the public over the last few years. I haven't used them myself (see above) but everything I've seen suggests they just aren't very good. It's painfully obvious how they can be/will be/are being used to devalue people's labour, thus strengthening corporations. There's the destruction of the information ecosystem that comes from integrating software intended to reproduce tone instead of facts into major search engines. There's the impact on the actual ecosystem of pouring resources and power into this technology. There's the simple detail that a lot of the people pushing this stuff are, frankly, just the worst.
However, I am extremely, painfully aware I am the wrong person to make rational arguments against these tools because what's actually driving my objection is disgust. I'm going to assume the worst about this particular kind of automation simply on the basis that I can't stand its existence.
There may be good, productive uses for this kind of technology! I can't tell you what they might be because I'm too busy looking for the bit where my worst opinions are validated. That's where I am on this. I actively have to guard my tongue around some of my colleagues, to keep from railing at how gullible I think they're being, buying into these things.
So yeah. Not a good place for making solid arguments. But that point from two years ago -- 'AI' is not creating any new problems.
I think it's easy to lose track of that. Consider the environmental impact. In order for you to read this, some server, somewhere, needs to be powered and cooled. The device you are reading this on is likely made from relatively rare materials that have a history of being source via destructive means (both to the environment and the people involved in the extraction process). I don't say that as a guilt-trip; I'm writing this via the same means. It's simply that the current landscape of our societies is dependent on things that comes at a cost to the planet and our fellow humans. That cost is made worse by rampant capitalism, but even under ideal conditions, mitigating it will require rethinking massive amounts of infrastructure.
This is not an excuse to make things worse. I want to be very clear about that. Nor am I claiming these issues are insoluble. It's simply a good example of 'AI' being an exaggerated case of an existing problem, namely how to balance the utility of modern communication technology against the extractive activity required to build it. As with many things, the glib answer is 'don't do capitalism' and, well, err, that kind of is the answer, reorientating away from the maximisation of profit above all else and from 'endless growth' doctrine. But crucially, that answer has nothing to do with 'AI'. If the hype-train collapsed tomorrow and everyone realised they've been buying snake-oil, and somehow the tech sector didn't collectively burn to the ground about it, we'd still have a problem to solve.
Because the problem isn't new.
That 'summarisation' tool Google or Adobe have swung on you, that shortens text with no regard for the actual information contained within what it's reducing is not some novel horror; it's just an acceleration of the same approach to design that sees 'engagement' as the primary driver, detached from what is actually materially happening to cause everyone to flock to a single place. MidJourney or what-have-you, allowing X or Y group to churn out endless cloying representations of their ideal reality, is just bad Photoshop composites with less effort required on the part of the person pushing the button. People will airbrush reality whether they have to do it with a prompt or an actual airbrush. We know this! Thomas Kinkade made a whole flipping career off it! It's the heart of mass-media advertising, to cheaply reproduce visions of simpler worlds for the sake of selling you something.
The truth is, grifters are going to grift, with whatever tools they have at their disposal. As long as there is a market for snake-oil, an incentive to cheat, a reason for people to be dissatisfied with their lot, there is going to be space for someone to sell an everything-app. A quick solution. An easy fix. We don't address that by playing whack-a-mole with every single dumb vapourware 'solution' that results; we address it by collapsing the space that permits those things to find their marks.
I think it is an objectively bad thing if paper-mills can work faster and easier and flood journal submissions with more junk than ever before. But it is also objectively bad for academia to be held hostage by a for-profit system that silos and constrains their work while being treated as the bar for judging how well they are doing their jobs. And the latter is the problem that actually *needs* to be solved, if we're going to have a hope of addressing the former.
Anyway, thank you for coming to this edition of 'Words sorts through his disgust to work out if there's a sensible position obscured beneath, for the sake of not being a raging arsehole to people who like shiny toys and haven't been in a love-hate relationship with their ability to draw for thirty years'.
