Upcoming in 5G technology Advanced?
First look at 3GPP Release
The decade-long 5G technology evolution reached a milestone this month. The scope of 5G Advanced Release was decided at the final 3GPP RAN Plenary meeting of 2023 in Edinburgh after months of intense discussions. Let’s examine the major projects expected to start soon after the new year.
Giving 5G Advanced Released
Based on 3GPP Released, Released 5G will introduce new 5G features. It drives system improvements, expands into new use cases, adds capabilities, and lays the groundwork for 6G. Examine each focus area in detail.
5G system improvements
As the ecosystem learns from deployed networks and devices, Release will prioritize 5G commercialization-relevant improvements.These projects strengthen 5G technology.
A brief overview:
Uplink and downlink MIMO evolution: 5G massive multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) capabilities improve, with extra focus on uplink performance and beam management to reduce overhead/latency. Work is also underway to support up to 128 CSI-RS ports to match antenna configurations of modern massive MIMO deployments.
Multi-TRP operation is also evolved to target scenarios with single-TRP operation in Downlink and multi-TRP operation in Uplink, enabling feedback enhancements for improved Coherent Joint Transmission (CJT) support under non-ideal synchronization and backhaul assumptions. Finally, a 3-antenna port non-coherent UL codebook design will be specified.
Supporting inter-CU Layer 2 mobility and related measurements enhancements are the main goals of device mobility enhancements. Conditioning Layer 2 mobility and a new Study Item to improve wireless AI/ML device mobility are also supported.
Advanced network topology: This release begins by studying Wireless Access and Backhaul (WAB) and 5G femto-cells before specifying them. WAB is a gNB with Mobile Terminal (MT) function that provides PDU session backhaul for all 5G deployments. Support architecture and protocol stack will be examined. Femto-cells were specified for 3G and 4G but not 5G Technology. Released will be examined for missing functionality to support 5G femto-cells.
Other system improvements: A project to improve self-organizing networks (SON)/minimization of drive tests (MDT) was also approved to address mobility enhancements and Rel-18 RACH optimizations and carrier aggregation support. A large number of smaller projects to improve performance and efficiency in coverage, multi-carrier operations, multi-SIM, sidelink, positioning, quality of experience, broadcast, device capabilities, and more will be considered for approval in September ’24 based on commercial needs and Released progress.
Additional use case variations
Released will support new and enhanced use cases beyond mobile broadband (smartphones, PCs, fixed wireless access) and vertical services (IoT, automotive) to help 5G Technology reach its full potential. Some key areas
Get new features in Release:
Ambient IoT: Released will first study architecture and design options for extremely low-complexity 5G devices with small or no energy storage (i.e., battery-less) and with/without signal generation or amplification through a harmonized specification. The topology where the gNB directly communicates with Ambient IoT tags and the UE acts as the reader are considered.
Enhance boundless XR: Released will improve traffic scheduling, device power savings, and latency to improve user experiences. Released focused on capacity and power consumption optimizations.
Released will increase uplink capacity and support regenerative payload for IoT-NTN and NR-NTN. NR-NTN will improve downlink coverage and add MBS and RedCap support to NTN.
New advanced abilities
5G Technology Advanced introduces the second wave of innovations that will transform the 5G system. Release will continue many of these projects’ multi-release studies/work. Some examples:
Wireless AI: Released begins the Work Item after Released extensive AI-enabled air interface and framework for next-generation RAN study. The goal is to provide specification support for a general AI/ML framework for air interface and specific beam management and positioning use cases from Released. Released in the december will also study channel state information enhancement use cases to find larger gains and better understand two-sided AI/ML models.
Network energy savings: Release specifies more 5G network energy-saving methods. To save network energy, this includes studying on-demand SIB1 transmissions for UEs in Idle/Inactive mode, specifying on-demand SSB for UEs in Connected mode configured with Carrier Aggregation, and adapting common signal/channel transmissions.
Low-power wakeup receiver (LP-WUR): The Released Study of Item is moving into the Work Item phase, supporting the most efficient signaling (e.g., waveform, measurement, sync) for very low-power IoT use cases (e.g., sensors) with enhanced RedCap features.
6G tech foundation
5G Advanced aims to set 6G technology directions early. While Released is the last “5G only” release (Release 20 is expected to begin 6G studies), several projects are exploring the technical possibilities of these
6G enablers: Full duplex is the wireless communications holy grail because transmitting and receiving in the same band is rewarding and difficult.Will standardize subband full duplex using self and crosslink interference mitigation.
Enable new spectrum bands: To meet the insatiable capacity demand, the wireless ecosystem is studying the upper midband spectrum’s 7–24 GHz channel characteristics, which can deliver 500 MHz or more contiguous bandwidth. This could be 6G’s wide-area band.
Combining wireless communications with RF sensing is a key differentiator for 6G, according to industry opinion. This synergy can enable sensing-assisted communications, public safety, and other new use cases. Director’s Cut: Part III (Finale)
OK. When I started writing this Director’s Cut, I figured it would be an easy couple-thousand-word post. My plan was to rapidly look back at the past six months of Destiny 2 and layout a simple outline of where we want to go this Fall. I think I still did that, but I ended up wanting to talk more about the “why”, the team, and share how we are thinking about Destiny. I remember following games when I was younger and being excited to dig into the messages the developers put together, like Tigole’s posts on raids and dungeons back in my WoW days.
And I loved it. And I loved reading those posts.
Maybe this was all a love letter to long-form communication—a relic from a time before it was all hot takes, 140/280-character posts, and upvotes.
I didn’t think this would add up to something longer than almost every paper I wrote in college. But here we are.
Before we get to today’s programming, I want to circle back on reloader mods and also about mods more generally in Armor this fall, in case you missed my Twitter thoughts.
These general mods--which provide the exact same effect as Hand Cannon reloader (but also affects other small arms weapons)--cost 4-5 energy (depending on the mod) and do not have an elemental affinity associated with them.
These general mods -- of which there are 11 -- are unlocked for everyone automatically, so you can start to tinker right away.
Basically, when you want to specialize your weapon, it requires matching your armor's energy type.
And then you get an energy discount on socketing the mod.

Let’s finish this series by looking at combat—where the action game and RPG collide—and begin the conversation about the “single evolving world” portion of our vision. (We’ll have more on the evolving world later this month after the feeling has returned to my fingers.)
COMBAT: THE INEVITABLE COLLISION OF ACTION AND RPG
We want the game to be an awesome power fantasy where challenge can push back on its players. As we discussed in Part I, the game started to bend in Year 2 under the weight of this Power and Destiny’s imperative that it ride the line between action game and RPG. This section is going to explore that collision across a variety of places: the UI, the player character, and of course PvP.
Part I: Damage Numbers and the 999,999 Problem
Destiny 2 was built with very different goals in mind than was the much-improved version of the game we’re playing today. Some parts simply weren’t meant to last for several years. One of those parts is the displayed-damage values relative to the player’s Power level.
This problem most clearly manifests to players as the frequency of “999,999” showing up in your HUD. As the post-Forsaken year continued, the curve that dictates the value of displayed damage sharpens into a hockey stick. The display values for Shadowkeep rocket off the graph and become almost vertical!
This inflation for damage is getting retooled this Fall. It will look like a UI numbers squish, but more crucially, behind the scenes we’re setting up the damage-display system to last. It’s important that you understand we are not nerfing your outgoing damage; rather, we’re refactoring the displayed number game wide.
We’ve also had something that, over the years, the team has come to call “The Immunity Wall.” This is a value where players cannot damage AI. In the game today, if you’re 50 Power below an enemy and you shoot it, you deal a big ol’ donut. Another change we’ve made for fall is that we’ve lowered (raised?) the immunity wall to 100. This means you can now deal damage to enemies you are up to 100 Power below. The at-Power (you and an enemy are the same Power) experience isn’t changing. This isn’t a nerf. This is a way for folks to take on greater challenges by fighting further below the Power curve.
Part II: Buffs, Debuffs, and Stacking Rules
You know it, I know it, and Gladd knows it: The way damage stacking works in the game right now is busted. Multiplicative damage combines with the exponential damage inflation above to send damage numbers to soaring heights of “we cannot continue this way.”
We’ve taken all the weapon damage buffs (these enhance the player’s outgoing damage) that can appear on the character and stack-ranked their damage effects (these are effects like Empowering Rift, Well of Radiance, Lumina’s buff, and top-tree Void Titan’s Weapons of Light). We’ve also overhauled the system under the hood, so the damage calculations use only the most powerful buff on a player at a given time. It’s got nuance to it, though: If you’re under the damage effect of something stronger than Well of Radiance, you will still receive the healing effect from the Well, but the damage bonus would come from the other buff (e.g., Lumina or Weapons of Light).
We’ve made some changes to debuffs as well (a debuff is an effect that weakens the enemy). We’ve touched the effects and durations of a number of them. These effects include Hammer Strike, Shattering Strike, Tractor Cannon, and Shadowshot (Shadowshot will now work on powerful weapons as well).
In general, only one ability buff can be active on a player at a given time, and enemies can be affected by only one debuff at a time. There are notable exceptions in the form of Exotics and weapon amplification perks (Kill Clip, Rampage, et cetera). The Exotics and weapon amplification perks will remain multiplicative increases to damage above the ability buff values.
Here’s a simple version: Buffs that apply to a single weapon (Rampage, Kill Clip, Exotics) can still stack. But buffs that affect all your weapons no longer stack. The most powerful of those buffs will be applied to your damage. I’m sure someone is gonna make a video that shows this in action on October 1st.
Part III: Supers Everywhere
Masterworked guns. Super mods. Orbs everywhere.
Right now, for a pretty decent player running Super mods, the time it takes to gain a Super is under two minutes in PvP. If you compare the duration and damage of roaming Supers in Destiny 2 to roaming Supers in Destiny 1, you’ll see they’re more powerful now than ever before. We didn’t even have roaming Arc Titans in Destiny 1, but every time I play PvP, I get killed by one twice in the same Super. Similar to the way that deep down, we all know the damage-dealing capabilities of Guardians has gotten out of control, we know the Supers have too. Destiny 2 was overly restrictive at launch, but now the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction. We’ll start bringing this back toward center in Shadowkeep.
On a livestream a couple months ago, I mentioned that we’re lowering roaming Super damage resistance. And we are. Seeing someone pop a Super should not instinctively make us want to run away, give up, or float off the map. We want Super kills to feel earned, and we want players on the business end of a Super to feel like they can make a big play and put down that Striker Titan. Being able to challenge someone in their Super is important, and right now, many of the Supers are very, very hard to challenge.
On top of that, more things than ever now contribute to players getting their Supers back, so we’re doing some tuning there as well. Supers will be just as powerful, but they will be a more strategic choice. As such, we’re reducing the effectiveness of orbs on refilling the Super meter and reducing the Super energy gained from kills and assists.
This isn’t just a PvP problem. Remember that series on the Reckoning in Part I? It’s all related. Supers are still very, very powerful in the PvE game—players will just need to be slightly more specific with their timing and positioning than in the past. This kind of tuning is a pendulum: We’ve swung it hard in different directions, and we’re all hopeful that these changes will begin to find a better middle ground for Destiny 2.

Part IV: Heavy Ammo Available
In Destiny 1, Heavy ammo became an in-match rally point in 6v6 matches. Once opened, players nearby would all get some Heavy ammo. In Destiny 2, Heavy ammo is a jockey-for-position speed-before-need looting game that gets played all the time. In Destiny 1, Heavy ammo felt metered, and in Destiny 2 you can defeat a team (but not an Arc Titan) multiple times with a brick for a Hammerhead.

We’re making some changes to Heavy ammo in Destiny 2: Heavy ammo will be communal in 6v6 playlists. We’re also reducing the amount of ammo per brick in PvP for certain 6v6 archetypes. It’s not exactly the same as D1 though—when a player cracks open the Heavy crate, other players have a window of time to interact with it to get their Heavy ammo.
Part V: Let’s Talk About PvP
There has been a lot of conversation (internally and externally!) at different points during the year around the support Bungie provides PvP. On one hand, we have continued to tune the game each quarter, added pinnacle PvP weapons (that somehow ended up as pinnacle PvE weapons), tried out a ranking system in the Crucible, and returned the game to its 6v6 roots. On the other hand: We haven’t released a new permanent game mode, many game modes from Destiny 1 are nowhere to be seen, there isn’t a public-facing PvP team, and the last real thing we said was Trials is staying on hiatus indefinitely.
Let’s get some of this sorted out.
Trials of the Nine wasn’t the hero we wanted it to be. We made too many changes to a formula that—while it had begun to decline in Destiny 1—wasn’t as flawed as we thought. When we were making Destiny 2, we talked a lot about making sure it felt like a sequel, bringing in new players, and simplifying the game—and Trials of the Nine created another casualty there. It happened on my watch, and if I could turn back time, I’d challenge us to do many things differently. If nothing else, I hope it’s clear we are committed to learning from the mistakes we make and making it right.
There were some really cool parts to the Emissary. Some of the gear was pretty potent (Sup, Darkest Before), but the theme felt weaker, the Trials card was less important, and the stakes felt lower. Trials of the Nine didn’t work the way we’d hoped, and Trials of the Nine is on hiatus indefinitely.
So why have we been so quiet about PvP? Well, we didn’t have a lot to say. We weren’t actively developing something to hype up. We knew PvP was going to be something everyone got for free in New Light, so it wasn’t really a part of the Shadowkeep core offering. What are we doing about PvP became a question we were asked internally, too. A bunch of folks on our team are passionate about PvP and wanted to know where it was heading.
PvP is in need of some quality-of-life improvements and restructuring. This Fall, with New Light (hopefully) bringing a bunch of new folks into Destiny and with our existing players looking for some updates to PvP, we will start by making significant changes to the PvP portion of the Director.
Today, it’s a fine balance between adding playlists and maintaining healthy populations when we’re looking at changes to playlist structures. We want to achieve a couple of goals: First, we want players to have some more agency with respect to “pick a playlist, play a mode.” And second, we want the playlists to drift back to the “everything is a factor of 3” that Destiny 1 used (and that the rest of the game mostly uses).
Player counts being based on a common number (like 3) is important. It enables a bunch of activity options for groups of friends to engage with. In Destiny 1, players could run a couple strike groups, team up for a raid, go play 6v6 PvP, split up and go to 3v3 PvP, et cetera. At launch, Destiny 2’s 4v4 PvP completely broke this pattern, and we want to reset that bone with PvP this Fall.
We’ve revised the playlists a lot, and here’s how it’s going to work:
We’ve removed the Quickplay and Competitive nodes from the Director.
If you’re looking for an experience like Quickplay, we’ve added Classic Mix (a connection-based playlist [like Quickplay today]). Classic Mix includes Control, Clash, and Supremacy.
Competitive is replaced by 3v3 Survival (which now awards Glory).
We’ve also added a Survival Solo Queue playlist that also awards Glory.
We’ve added 6v6 Control as its own playlist.
With the potential influx of new players this Fall, we want to have a playlist that signals to new players that this is where to start.
We feel like 6v6 Control is the right starting place when introducing new friends to Destiny.
We’ve added a weekly 6v6 rotator and a weekly 4v4 rotator.
These rotator playlists are where modes like Clash, Supremacy, Mayhem, Lockdown, and Countdown will appear.
We’ve removed some underperforming maps from matchmaking, too.
We’ve also been working on four variants of 3v3 Elimination. They include different approaches to revives (token resurrection or not) and variations on how Heavy ammo works. Elimination is going to make its return in Crucible Labs. However, Elimination is very much unfinished. It’s missing VO, and there are no unique medals associated with it. Between the missing polish and the four variants we’d like your feedback on, Elimination—for the time being—is a great fit for Crucible Labs. We fully expect it to graduate out of Labs and find a warmer home.
We wanted to make sure we could test Elimination on some familiar maps, so we’ve brought back Widow’s Court and Twilight Gap. We want to play with you, and watch you play Elimination in this combat sandbox and see how it all fits together.
We’re also changing how we do matchmaking. With a bunch of potential new players entering Destiny via New Light, we don’t want PvP to feel like you’re being told it’s time to learn to swim as the helicopter door opens over the Pacific Ocean. So, we’ve made some changes to separate the new swimmers from the Olympians.
Additionally, we’ve also taken a longer look at matchmaking and overhauled the skill-matching system. In the game today, Quickplay is the only playlist that doesn’t have some version of skill matching in the game. We’re preserving that behavior (connection matchmaking) in the 6v6 Classic Mix playlist. Here’s what gets really annoying about skill match:
When it’s overly restrictive, it’s fatiguing when every single game feels like a sweat fest.
When it’s overly loose, a player can get an entire evening of unlucky matchmaking RNG where they’re getting dumped on by squads of Terminators shredding Kinderguardians. A bad time (for the Kinderguardians)!
There’s much more complexity and nuance to an evening of PvP than those two statements above, but they do accurately capture the core problem: a lack of match-to-match variety. Sure, for a bunch of Terminators, a night of stomping might be a blast, but what about the folks on the receiving end of that business? This is where it gets tricky to improve matchmaking—people generally tend to focus on their own experience in their feedback.
We think variety across an evening of PvP is important. This Fall, skill match should ensure a wider variety of matches, regardless of player skill. Some matches should be tense and thrilling, while other matches should be stomps. This philosophy should also apply to the top players, so they don’t feel like every match is a sweatshow, either. We’ve refactored how players gain Glory ranks with these skill match changes—we’re factoring in your skill value to Glory gains and losses, so that number can more effectively represent skill. We’ve also made a number of quality-of-life changes to Glory, Valor, and Infamy to make losses less punishing to your streaks. Once the above changes go live in October, we’ll be watching, listening, and reading as you check them out.
AN EVOLVING WORLD
There’s an aspirational vision for what “evolving” could mean for Destiny. Someday, Destiny could become a dynamic world, where the world changes each season. We want playing Destiny to feel like you're playing in a game world with true momentum, a universe that is going somewhere. A game where things are happening—not just in terms of new items and activities but also in terms of narrative. It’s frequently seemed like Destiny was treading water in terms of moving the world’s narrative forward. We want to tackle this in Destiny 2’s third year.
During Season 8, a new situation will unfold on the Moon (I’m being cagey here only because I am reluctant to spoil anything). Over the course of the season, parts of the game will change before the situation culminates in an event that will ultimate resolve it, and its content will be exhausted. But this resolution sets up the events of Season 9, which again adds something new to the game and resolves it, something that too will go away, but not before setting up Season 10, et cetera.
This differs from last year’s Annual Pass, which permanently added activities to the game. This year will see events that last for three months and offer new rewards to chase, although at the end of that period, some of the activities will go away. For a time, the rewards will too. But we also acknowledge that part of playing Destiny is collecting all of the stuff, so in future seasons the weapons and Legendary armor associated with these seasonal activities will be added to other reward sites.
I alluded to some of this when we were Looking Back. The game continuing to grow forever isn’t something we can support. Destiny’s simulation, fidelity, and architecture fundamentally make it a big game. I’ve seen a lot of “game X does it, why can’t Destiny?” but the referenced games and ours have very different technical profiles.
Technical limitations aside, we also don’t think making a game that grows forever is Destiny’s path forward. It’s why the second component of the vision is a single, evolving world (to clarify, that single evolving world doesn’t mean there’s only one destination on the Director—that’s not where we’re heading!).
You were there with your friends, got the gear and weapons to remember it by, made the memories, and changed alongside Destiny.
In late August, we’re going to talk more about the Annual Pass and how it’s continuing to evolve.

Much is said about the overwhelming superiority of the Novum. A 25ton creation of the long lost adversaries of the Forerunners, its ressurection by the mad genius Tory has been the talk of Mecha Galaxy as its has quickly proven to be the deadliest mecha under fifty tons in human controlled space. It hits harder and faster than anything mankind or the Forerunners ever created. While this was the pinnacle of mecha potential in the light class of mecha, it took the genius of one of Mecha Galaxy's greats to create its dark mirror, a super heavy with the same brutal elegance and synergistic amplification of effect that the Novum produces.
The late Mark Penner of Omega and Zeon fame was ahead of the curve of technology, for his vision of the future of Ultra Heavy mecha required elements that did not yet exist. His death caused those notes and designs he had already assembled to fall into the hands of the Craftsmen. What was beyond the Forerunners, what remained beyond humanity, was not beyond them. Building upon his genius, they made his design possible, and what is more replicateable.
The Penner is not for junior pilots. Its machine intelligence was taken from a mirror of Mark Penner taken in the heat of one of his extended defenses in King of the Mountain. The mind of one of the elite pilots of Mecha Galaxy in a situation in which there are no friendlies, and everything that moves or stays still suspiciously is a valid target and there are no bystanders (ANN and Galaxy Gathering reporters have learned to arrive in mecha or leave in baggies filled by weight). This is not a pirate hunting machine, not a careful and strategic Clan War competitor, this is a berserker with chainguns for hands and enough targeting sensors and EM/ECM/ECCM feeds to overwhelm all but the most experienced and mentally balanced pilots with the flood of kill urge and target information.
Lets have a look at what this beast brings to the table before being equipped. Fully developed the Penner brings the following to the table.

For members of the 300 club, this is a Dakka factory, you resemble an NRA wet dream where every free surface mounts a gun, targeting sensor or ammo bin. For members of the 400 club, you look like a Dakkagasm, a being entirely composed of gun mounts and red burning eyes above a howling and hungry mouth, a back swollen with a backpack composed of cellular ammunition storage tanks like missile silos, whose massive weight is required not just to hold the huge ammunition requirements of 110 tons of walking cannon, but to keep the mecha from falling face first as the mass of cannons on its front make it somewhat tippy.
This is the only machine in Mecha Galaxy that is designed to be stable ONLY when firing. The Penner is only happy when it is shooting high mach level guass rounds of various calibers, spraying death in front of it and brass casings behind; it is also only balanced when several tons of recoil are compressing the huge buffer systems, simultaneously powering its amplifiers and correcting its innate tendency to tip forward.
The recoil buffers are Penner's true genius. Unlike traditional systems that try to bleed off the recoil energy, keeping only a fraction to power the ammunition feeds of the guns themselves, the Penner absorbs rather than channeling into backblast. Every cannon cocker from the Imech to the Dreadnought or Justicar vents the backblast of the explosives of the initiating charge and plasma from the guass acceleration out the back to balance the recoil forces of the multiple foot-tons of force produced by the 90 point plus base damage weapons of the more potent cannons. The Penner does not. The Penner absorbs all that force into its niode-crystal torsion matrix, where the induced torsion of the crystal produces an energy that can be returned to the gun systems to amplify the discharge power by several magnitudes. Anyone who has been on the receiving end of one of these 1.3x 1.5x 2x 3x damage stacking blasts can tell you just how much of a game changer this is. A potato armed Penner can knock a Reaper on its ass.
Why hasn't anyone tried this before? Well Evil Santa pulled it off with his elves, and on Charon IV the Clark Federation attempted it. The low grade nuclear explosion that took out their research station on that world was the last attempt to use this technology. Without active energy matrix stabilization, the torsion-crystal energy absorption system has a tendency to fail catastrophically, leaving a thirty meter crater. The AI in the Penner instinctively balances the energy field in the crystal torsion matrix, allowing the niode core to channel all the power into the weapon charging systems seamlessly, balanced to supercharge rather that fry the guass accelleration systems of cannons, and to a lesser extent focusing elements of laser and plasma systems, magnetic launch assist for missiles and ice nano weapons.
Side effects of the energy absorbtion system are noted in the Penners defensive statistics. The recoil compensation system functions by absorbing incoming energy and channeling it back. This translates into a built in energy reflection rate of 14% and shrugs off the first 150 points of any hit as just a mild aid in keeping the mecha from tipping forward. Negative side effects of the system are that it does limit the amount of external shielding modules the system can employ (only six units at maximum development) and the extensive threading of the limbs with the linked buffer systems somewhat limit the chassis augmentation, with a maximum of seven units at full development.
The need to stop your Penner from slaughtering everything including your own command occupies a lot of the Penner pilots neural bandwidth. At low levels of development this imposes a -25 speed penalty. It should be noted that this is far less severe than having a contract on your life issued by the major governments of the land because you wiped out a shopping complex because your Penner detected a camera phone range finder and leveled a quarter acre of mall in reaction. As your Penner develops, a total of eight cockpit modules are able to link to the AI to help deal with the information overload and somewhat moderate the insane kill urge of the Penner to usable levels. Like the Novum, the speed of the Penner has to be seen to be believed. Everyone knows the Novums are insanely fast, but like the Penner their technical speed is only part of the truth of their functional speed. Both these designs grow guns at insane rates. The Penner grows guns at a rate of one per two and a half levels. Two guns per five levels. Forty guns per hundred levels, as opposed to twenty for the Surt or 33 for Specter or Xango. With eight engine amplifiers possible at full development, and growing more guns per level than any other mecha in its weight class the Penner has an overwhelming likelihood of firing first. Given its huge damage stacking capacity, and built in critical kill, even before any of its cockpit, chassis and engine system bonuses are added, the ability to fire first freqently makes the Penner's first shot the last of any exchange.
Downsides of owning a Penner. Look there is no way of getting around this, a Penner is top heavy. Watching a high level Penner advance is like watching Jessica Rabbit jog. There is a whole lot of motion up front, and the arms are carried high and way out to the side to prevent loss of balance. The Penner wiggles its ample ass at the run as well, to counteract the huge momentum of the weapon heavy arms and cannon bristling torso. On battlefield manover drills it is like watching a particularly well endowed stripper run without a sports bra. It is only saved from being ridiculous by the memory of seeing the same machine at full charge with arms and grinning death's head holding dead level as its body ran over dead Notas and Boreas like a steeple chase runner, with every muzzle dripping flame and a flow of steel connecting it to victims downrange that was so thick you could walk across it and never touch a molecule of air.
The Penner is expensive to own and feed. Its equipment is either niode or barely noticeable. There are almost no crystal options worth having. There is a very limited variety of equipment available in this weight class, so limits hit quickly. Its ammunition bill is terrifying, but so far in Mecha Galaxy, there has never been a beast this deadly.
My first sits about 325, doesn't have any of the fancy Vortex equipment, and still gives the following equipped performance. Some of the 400 club can swat it with theirs as it swats lesser mecha, so that weapon every 2.5 levels means this beast rewards advancement with advantage more than any other mecha in the game.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: The Brain of a Smart City | IoT For All
Another post in my series on smart cities and privacy. This continues from the previous post Smart City Data: A Convoluted Web.
The data collected by sensors and IoT devices in the smart city have to, somehow, be used. Information can provide insights to spot patterns and trends. If you have enough of it, aka big data, you can get a pretty accurate picture of whatever it is you’re exploring. For example, smart grids, with enough information at hand, can use data to determine peaks and troughs in electricity need and to then adjust output. This optimizes the use of energy, helping in the drive to sustainability.
Decision Making with AI & ML
Optimization decisions can be enhanced using technology such as Machine Learning (ML), which is a subset of Artificial Intelligence (AI). ML takes the data generated by health apps, smart meters or internet-enabled cars, etc., and uses these data to spot patterns and learn how to optimize the given service. For example, NVIDIA has developed smart video which handles big data analytics and applies machine learning to video streams. They’ve partnered with 50 AI city partners to utilize the technology to improve areas such as smart transport. There are expected to be 1 billion of these intelligent cameras by 2020. That’s an awful lot of data generated, analyzed and acted upon. The system will replace human interpretation, replacing it with machine learning algorithms – with an expected improvement in accuracy and speed. This city brain will process a lot of our personal data, including visual data about our movements.
As mentioned above, Machine Learning requires data to spot patterns and trends. The analysis of big data gives city services the information needed to be highly responsive to the needs of its citizens. It also uses these data in services to build more optimized responses to service use, helping to enhance the experience and improve sustainability. One area that’s being explored as suitable for AI and Machine Learning is in the personalization of services. This requires that personal data is collected and aggregated before being used as a profiling tool.
How AI and ML Can Personalize Smart City Services
ML tools that personalize experiences are already in use in marketing, for example. Here they’re used to tailor online sites, displaying products that users are expected to like from their predicted profile. In a smart city, the same type of algorithm can be used for other purposes. For example, a study by three UK universities looked at the application of various ML algorithms for cycling and weather as a means of creating personalized services within a smart city. This was based on the collection, aggregation and analysis of big data. The study concluded:
“[a] combination of ML, IoT and Big Data, offers great potential to developers of smart city technologies and services.”
Importantly, this study was done without the need for data that could directly identify an individual. That isn’t to say that with effort, correlated data, perhaps using GPS from mobile devices, could be used to re-identify individuals. Also, it’s not too big of a leap to imagine that even more tailored personalization, or more accurate results, could be obtained by using directly identifiable information.
One of the other concerns about machine learning and AI is the possibility of default bias built into the very algorithms that are supposed to improve accuracy. If the training set itself is skewed towards a specific expected outcome, then the result will itself be skewed – in fact, the resulting bias may well be amplified. There have been several studies in this area including, “Men Also Like Shopping: Reducing Gender Bias Amplification using Corpus-level Constraints”. This study looked at how training sets contain gender bias; this bias then becomes amplified when used in an AI situation.
Bias and Privacy Concerns Around AI and ML
The use of bias in AI might also amplify privacy concerns. An example of where this type of bias and control has crept in was the use of Microsoft’s ‘Tay’ chatbot which was trained using real-world tweets. The problem arose when people started tweeting racist and misogynist comments to Tay who then played back those sentiments. Similarly, privacy issues could arise from biased training sets. Privacy is about more than the exposure of personal data; privacy is about the exposure of our very being – our beliefs, our views, our political leanings and so on.
Privacy in the smart city is about so much more than revealing your name…

Muzica. Un element deosebit in viata noastra. Muzica, o sursa cu multe radacini, poate sa fie medicament, poate fi un element de inspiratie, poate fi un amplificator al starii de spirit, sau chiar sa modifice starea de spirit. Muzica, din punct de vedere subiectiv, e un element indispensabil din viata noastra. Este una dintre cele mai vechi elemente ale imaginatiei creative, probabil a aparut inca de la inceputul evolutiei umane. Fie ca are zumzet, fie ca e auzita ca un ton, indiferent de situatie, muzica e pur si simplu element creativ. Muzica, din punct de vedere obiectiv, este o energie care are o lungime de unda si o frecventa. Este una dintre putinele activitati care stimuleaza intregul creier, in acest fel aceasta interactioneaza cu celelelte campuri energetice si reuseste sa schimbe starea de spirit, Exista momente in care te simti deprimat. Depresia reduce activitatea creierului si afecteaza capacitatea mintii de a planifica si executa sarcini. Lipsa de serotonina duce la o stare depresiva. Notele muzicale linistite, calmante ajuta la cresterea acestei substantei, atenuand depresia psihica. Anxietatea poate duce la insomnie si alte tulburari, iar muzica te va face sa nu te mai simti nervos si iti va linisti mintea, ajutandu-te sa adormi mai usor. Muzica este buna si in procesul de invatare. Daca aceasta este linistitoare, ascultatorul va analiza lucrurile si va lucra mult mai repede pentru ca ii va induce o atitudine pozitiva si il va face sa fie mai motivat. Numeroase sondaje au demonstrat ca muzica a adus imbunatatiri remarcabile in cazul studentilor care lucrau in laborator in timp ce ascultau ceva linistitor. Asta inseamna ca, ascultand muzica in timp ce te ocupi de o sarcina dificila, totul o sa-ti para mai usor. Oamenii au preţuit şi au iubit dintotdeauna muzica, investind timp atat in compunerea, cat și in ascultarea ei „Atunci cand oamenii asculta o bucata muzicala pe care nu au mai auzit-o pana atunci, activitatea lor cerebrala ne poate indica daca le place sau daca o vor cumpara. Tocmai aceasta creare a aşteptarilor face ca muzica sa fie atat de puternica din punct de vedere emoţional”, explica un profesor de neurostiinta. Sunt multe exemple benefice pe care le aduce muzica, asadar voi enumera cateva din ele, pentru a consolida importanta acesui element. Sa ne imbunatatim motivatia și performanta in cadrul exercitiilor fizice. Ascultarea unor lucrari sonore preferate te poate ajuta sa alergi mai repede, sa iti mentii motivatia și sa iti prelungești efortul. In mijlocul unui exercitiu fizic dificil, muzica ce provoaca placere are rolul de a-ti distrage atentia, facilitand prelungirea duratei de lucru. Astfel, nici nu realizezi ca ai alergat un km in plus. 3. Sa acceleram recuperarea fizica dupa antrenamentul sportiv. Interesant este ca orice tip de muzica este eficient. Lucrarile lente induc un benefic efect de relaxare, iar cele rapide amplifica euforia. 5. Sa imbunatatim calitatea somnului. Numeroase studii au dovedit ca ascultarea muzicii clasice amelioreaza simptomele insomniei, aceasta fiind o alternativa sigura și necostisitoare la medicamentele care induc somnul. Nu toate efectele muzicii asupra creierului uman sunt insa pozitive. Sunt totusi cazuri, in care muzica aduce dezechiibre intre cele doua emisfere cerebrale, si pot duce dizabilitati de invatare.

Trust in 2019 Via Edelman: The Plotline for Women and Healthcare
Fewer than one-half of consumers trust in government and media. Three-quarters trust employers, who in 2019 are the top-trusted institution according to the 2019 Edelman Trust Barometer released last week in Davos at the World Economic Forum.
Consumers in the U.S. over-index for trust in employers, with 80% of people saying they have a strong relationship with “my employer,” compared with 73% of Britons, 66% of the French, and 59% of people in Japan.
What’s underneath this is employers being trusted to provide certainty: most workers look to their employer to be a trustworthy source of information about social issues and topics about which there isn’t universal agreement. But there is a nuance here: while 72% of people globally trust employers on information about the economy, only 58% of workers believe their employers on the issue of technology.
My hypothesis on this is workers’ concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics on jobs. Note that AI was a major topic of discussions through the World Economic Forum Agenda. For example, here’s a summary of changing the AI narrative to reskill the workforce, bolster “bilinguality” among workers in terms of building up AI human capital, and ensuring against bias in AI applications.
Then there was this less favorable take on the AI-Davos conversations published in the New York Times on the “hidden automation agenda of the Davos elite.”

So it’s interesting to note that Edelman found workers concerned about job security around the world. “Fears of job loss remain high,” the second chart asserts. Most employees are concerned about not have the training and skills to access a good job, and are concerned about innovations “taking my job away.”
It follows, then, that 8 in 10 consumers said how a company treats its employees is one of the best indicators of its level of trustworthiness. Furthermore, two-thirds of global consumers believe that a company’s good reputation may induce them to try a product, but unless they come to trust that company behind the product, they’ll soon stop buying it.
Edelman found that the most trusted employers lead on change across several dimensions in this order: societal impact, how an organization contributes to a better society; the organization’s values; the organization’s vision of the future; the organization’s mission and purpose; and, operational considerations like decisions that could affect “my job.” I note the order of importance, because larger societal impact comes here before how the organization’s decision impact my specific job.
One of the most striking findings in this year’s Trust Barometer is the gender gap between men and women when it comes to trust. Fewer women trust the different institution types across the board, with the largest gap toward business.
Furthermore, women tend to use social media more and “amplify” their opinions, news and information more frequently than men do by a relatively large margin. Social amplification is even more pronounced among women who are part of Edelman’s segment of the informed public. In Edelman methodology, the informed public are those consumers who are between 25 and 64 years of age, college-educated, in the top 25% of household income in their market, and report heavy media consumption and engagement in business news.
The percent of women from the informed public that amplify news and information brew 23 percentage points over one year 2018-2019, versus 18 percentage points among men.

The top three responses were equal pay, prejudice and discrimination, and training the jobs of tomorrow — issues that concern women, in particular those top two items.
Health Populi’s Hot Points: Since you are reading Health Populi, I must pull out the one data point in the Trust Barometer most central to our coverage: health care.
The industry sectors chart compares trust levels across industry sectors. Trust gains among consumers were made across every industry sector….except for healthcare. Energy and financial services gained the most trust margin, followed by telecomms.
Healthcare stayed flat over the year, with about two-thirds of consumers trust the sector versus a high of 78% of consumers trusting technology. This, even in a year of the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica story, innumerable personal data breaches, and growing concerns about privacy.
Let’s overlay the lens of women-as-healthcare-consumers on the Trust Barometer findings. Women tend to be the Chief Health Officers of their families and homes, driving the large percentage of decisions and dollars related to healthcare and retail health purchases.

If trust is a precursor of health engagement, then employers, governments, and media have to do a better job to engage women, who have the power to move dollars and traffic to one health/care destination versus another.
In particular, if technology entrants into health care can tailor and design services and streamlined life-flows based on women’s values and personal trust barometers, these new-fangled services may capture market share among these Chief Health Officers.
