k still don't know how im gonna post the videos (YouTube? unlisted?someone please help) but I can't sleep so I thought it'd write down whatever I remember happening!

(edit: here's the full recording! )

Becky and Joe walked on stage wearing sunglasses and red leather jackets and threw 3 of the trio plushies into the crowd. didn't get one unfortunately but it's really cool some people got free plushies :)

they made this robot child called the Inspiration Child, who's clearly meant to be a nod to ai (can learn from our show and generate it's own content!)

they explained how they met (and had some dodgy animated retelling), and how they started with small projects like commercials and music videos, until they came up with designs of the trio (and a mysterious fourth fella)

they made the designs first, then made the set, then the song and finally wrote the script for creativity. red guy was just a red mop head with legs at first ("alien squid thing") but Joe put the red guy head on for shits and giggles once and Becky thought it was hilarious so they kept it in the show

they were really not expecting it to blow up, and when Sundance called because they wanted to show creativity Becky thought it was a scam caller lol

they talked about the kickstarter and the credit card fraud kid. the mailed him saying "hey maybe dont do that" but the kid didnt know how to undo it cuz he just found a website full of credit card information and went ham, so Becky and Joe had to contact kickstarter because people were pulling out of the funding because they thought the project was overfunded (kickstarter was very difficult to contact)

they also made (lighthearted) fun of nsfw fluffybird art ((no padlock 😔) "using OUR characters to act out their SICK FANTASIES" - Becky) and theorists, especially because most if not all of the webseries is just them fucking around.

Inspiration Child also says something along the lines of "wow what a cool show with a great message of how corrupt the media is. I hate the media!"

Becky and Joe had these rules to make the show as vague as possible (no pop culture references, no names, no swearing and way too much detail put into small things)(the duck guy drag queen absolutely obliterates the no swearing rule lol)

they talk about the pilot, how they focused too much on the story because they felt like they had to due to it being on the big screen now, and how it ended up ruining the atmosphere and such of the pilot. they did show the entire thing sped up but my phone sucks ass so I could not get it to focus correctly. I'll see what I can salvage so you people can dissect frames of your blorbo you're Legally Not Allowed To See (which is also the official reason we don't get the pilot)

also pilot concept art showed that Mean Steve is in fact just called Key

they showed a whole post-it wall full of ideas for the tv show. don't know how much I got on footage, but what stood out most to me were 2 episodes called Money and Christmas. Joe mentioned "clock in a wheelchair" specifically

also really fun fact. Becky made the Lesley suit during covid, and pretty much threatened Baker into writing a human character into the show to wear it. concept art also shows Lesley with a mask made out of the same fabric, don't know if this was part of the original suit tho

they showed Warrens old models (?). he was gonna be a wayy more ugly looking silicone pug-worm thing y'all got lucky with the bald fuck

lily and todney were directly based off of some cancelled show about two porcelain doll children with panda parents. do not for the life of me remember what it was called but Becky and Joe were very enthousiastic about it (UPDATE: Candy and Andy!)

Inspiration Child talks about what he's learned and sings a little song, then generates his own dhmis inspired content of a cult meeting in a forest at night. the dhmis Discord server called this "potential new content" but I doubt it

3 cultists walk on stage, face the screen backs to the crowd, drop their cloaks and boom! drag queens!!!

they were not mentioned on the site or during earlier parts of the show at all so they were a complete surprise. I asked Becky about it later during the night and she said she really wanted them there, so she asked and they were excited to! hope this means more official content with them soon I love them

they dance to There's Three Of Us, then Duck lipsings the shredder song which turns into a techno remix while Red and Yellow dance during the background

then Duck and Yellow make out while Red tries to undress to the instrumentals of the Fucked Up Part of Creativity but can't get out of his suit on time before the song ends

the drag queens, Becky and Joe and the Inspiration Child walk around during the meet and greet later and I got signatures from all of them! except inspiration child he didn't have thumbs

the drag queens were so fucking funny. Duck adopted inspiration child and loudly yelled at everyone to "GET AWAY FROM MY FUCKING CHILD" (their duck voice is sooo good). yellow stood in a corner staring at a wall for like 10 minutes and red was constantly awkwardly hovering just outside the frames of pictures (and also could not see shit lmao)

Becky liked my shirt! (the one with the melting trio heads) said she handdrew it

So it turns out I'm prescient

Back in 2021 or so, I started writing an adventure for @soulmuppet's flavor-blasted Orbital Blues tabletop RPG. (Technically, I had a dream about part of it, and then wrote the story around that thing, but I'm choosing to ignore that bit)

A few months ago, an AI-related news story hit my feed, and I didn't realize until like 2 weeks ago how incredibly funny it was. Because it was, in essence, a massive plot point in what became Electric Sheep Shuffle. My goal was to play around with what the early days of AI would look like in the OB universe, and instead I got our universe.

Spoilers under the cut for the Thing I Wrote, in case someone's playing it right now and wants to be surprised:

On the way to Breqin Station, your crew meets a crew whose ship started malfunctioning.

Shortly after the Crew arrives at Breqin, they meet a shady businessperson who promises to sell them an Artificial Intelligence module for their ship. It's absolutely too good to be true, and some investigation into "Lovelace Technologies" reveals that the proprietor is selling you a bill of goods. The AI module is actually some harried and underpaid tech, sitting in a room with long-range comms, remotely piloting peoples' ships--like the one the crew encounters on the way in.

We have a scammer appropriating a famous name in tech. We've got hidden labor behind flashy tech. We've got misused research. We've got people getting hurt by the tech. It's some clever and prescient social commentary that I definitely planned for sure.

When I thought the Fake AI part up, I was like "well, that's a pretty wild scam! It's bad, but also nobody's going to ever try it.

But then some Investors recently discovered that the slick "Just Walk Out" grocery store, allegedly powered by AI, was actually a bunch of guys in a room with a beefy video connection, building a shopping list for customers and charging them accordingly.

So like... Really? Come on.

I will add, though. The ending has the abandoned ship coming back with Real AI, after it's rebooted itself thousands of times and iterated on the operating system until it works. My goal is to have the players wrestle with the idea of what to do with a new being and the new tech.

But in light of the last couple of years of AI developments, with OpenAI eating the Internet alive for misinformation. I think the question I'm ending up asking is, where can the technology go from here? We've got Google's massive screwups with the tech, the general disdain for AI art, and the researchers out there who are about to lose their jobs when the hype bubble inevitably bursts stuck in the middle.

What do we do if they ever get real AI? Can it survive the Scam Period?

The rise and fall of the personal jetpack

Jetpacks were ubiquitous in midcentury pop culture, including James Bond, the Jetsons and Gilligan’s Island. “… it felt like a matter of time before people could ride a jetpack to work.” But we never got personal jetpacks. This delightful episode of the 99% Invisible podcast looks at the history of the jetpack—how it came to be developed after World War II, how it became a pop culture phenom, and why it flopped. The jetpack—technically a rocket belt—was developed by Wendell Moore at Bell Aircraft Corp. in the 1960s.

Moore was a consummate showman, which is to say, a bullshitter. He was forever telling the press that his jetpacks would be on everyone’s back in one to two years, and he got an impressionable young man, Bill Suitor, to stage showy public demonstrations of the rocket belt. If you ever saw a video of a brave rocketeer piloting a jetpack, it was almost certainly Suitor. Suitor was Connery’s stunt-double in Thunderball, and it was he who flew the rocket belt around Sleeping Beauty castle.

Suitor’s interview … for the podcast is delightful. Suitor is a hilarious, profane old airman who led an extraordinary life and tells stories with expert timing, busting out great phrases like “a surprise is a fart with a lump in it.”

But what’s most striking about the tale of the Bell rocket belt is the shape of the deception that Moore and Bell pulled off. By conspicuously failing to mention the rocket belt’s limitations, and by callously risking Suitor’s life over and over again, they were able to create the impression that jetpacks were everywhere, and that they were trembling on the verge of widespread, popular adoption.

What’s more, they played a double game: all the public enthusiasm they manufactured with their carefully stage-managed, canned demos was designed to help them win more defense contracts to keep their dream alive. Ultimately, Uncle Sucker declined to continue funding their boondoggle, and the demos petered out, and the “promise” of a jetpack was broken.

As I listened to the 99 Percent Invisible episode, I was struck by the familiarity of this shuck: this is exactly what the self-driving car bros did over the past decade to convince us all that the human driver was already obsolete. The playbook was nearly identical, right down to the shameless huckster insisting that “full self-driving is one to two years away” every year for a decade:

I’m far less skeptical about AI than Cory is. Generative AI in particular. I use GenAI several times a week, and find it helpful. Still, I wave off claims that GenAI is on the verge of superhuman intelligence. Lesser claims, that GenAI will be as transformative as the smartphone or Internet, are more credible. But I’ll believe that when I see it.

I asked ChatGPT to summarize the 99% Invisible podcast episode about jetpacks, and it summarized the wrong episode. When I pointed it to the right episode, the summary it delivered was bland and useless. ChatGPT gets it spectacularly wrong like that nearly as often as it gets it right.

G1 Transformers S4 notes

Micromaster teams.

Both Autobot and Decepticon Micro teams are primarily generics, especially for the Decepticons. Most of the generics are cars and some assorted jets, red for Autobots, purple for Decepticons.

The main Decepticon Micros are the Sports Car Patrol and the Military Patrol. They’re arrogant and dumber than a box of rocks. The Construction Squad assists the Constructicons in maintaining Trypticon and Scorponok. When the Constructicons are permanently fused into a downsized Devastator, the Construction Squad become overwhelmed by the increased workload.

The main reoccurring Microcons are Spaceshot and Blackout, who work directly with Shatter, Backdraft, Cyclonus and Scourge. Being the dim but highly loyal soldier and the cowardly dork, they don’t have the most upstanding fans among the Decepticons, but they mean well. They pilot the anti air craft base that functions as an extension to Trypticon. Greasepit runs a bar, creatively called “Greasepit’s”, in Trypticon’s city mode, and assisted in the study and implementation of Nucleon. Later, with RatBat, he tries running a gas station scam on Earth in an attempt to harvest more energy for the Decepticons, but was foiled by the Bee Team and his own foolishness. When Transforming his gas station into Battle Mode to attack the Autobots, Greasepit wound up using all of the stolen gas just for that alone… The Airwave air port base is also attached to Trypticon and used to deploy Decepticon flyers. It was later hijacked and relocated by Starscream’s team as a base for his own operations.

The main Autobot Micros are Ironworks and the Construction Patrol, who help maintain Autobot City with Wideload and Quickmix. The Rescue Patrol, Hot House, and the Monster Truck Patrol are also reoccurring, with Pretender Eagle Eye being good friends with the chronic complainer Slow Poke. If something needs done, Eagle Eye is usually the one able to coax Slow Poke into it. Medic Fixit of the Rescue Patrol often works with the Bee Team, and suffers from a glitch where he struggles to get the right word out every other sentience. Multiple Tanker Truck and Missile Launcher teams are fixed at Autobot City to supply power and defense. A Tanker Truck filled with Nucleon under the watch of Pipe Line and Gusher was stolen during a Decepticon attack and taken back to Char for experiments. The Astro Squad work alongside Cosmos and Sky Lynx for space missions, and assisted in the original discovery and acquisition of Nucleon with Optimus Prime, Wheeljack and Perceptor. They also were monitoring the black hole when Nucle-Ai emerged from it. Later on the team split in half, with Sky-Lynx’s half investigating increased Quintesson activity while Cosmos’s half stayed to monitor the black hole. Feeling a bit exposed without Sky Lynx, he requested assistance from Countdown and his rocket base when the Decepticons aboard Scorponok made an attempt on the black hole later on.

When Hot Rod was downsized into Micro size by testing Nucleon on himself, he was installed as the commander of the Micromaster patrols. Hot Rod takes to the leadership role with gusto, enjoying another shot at being an Autobot Leader but without the stress of leading the ENTIRE faction. He’s since even returned to going by Rodimus to embrace this, with some Autobots playfully calling him “Rodimus Micronus”. He has a particular affinity with the Race Car and Hot Rod Patrols, and it’s implied Hot Rod named the later after himself to the team’s mild annoyance. When the Bee Team and Nucle-Ai need a Micro’s touch for a mission, they call on Rodimus to pick the best for the job.

A mysterious pair of Micromaster twins would later emerge from the black hole. One called Caliber and the other Scabbard, they combined to form the immensely powerful Nucleon Saber. The Quintessons instead dub it as the “Nucleon Key”, with Nucle-Ai as the “Nucleon Ignition”, and see it as paramount to their plans with dealing with the Transformers once and for all.

The Saber itself seems linked to Nucle-Ai, realizing its full potential when in her presence, and was initially under Autobot custody and wielded by Bumblebee the most. However, a Decepticon attack by Backdraft’s unit trying to acquire the sword saw Scabbard captured by Iguanus and Shellrazor. The reptilian rapscallions assumed they could still use ONE of the twins for their purposes but were berated by Cyclonus and Backdraft for instead creating an unintended stalemate.

In the companion Heathers AU, Dan Braverman has been looking for the Nucleon Saber to add to his collection. Caliber was sold as a pack in accessory for an Autobot, a special Nucleon Mode Pretender Bumblebee, while Scabbard was sold with a Decepticon, a Nucleon Mode Pretender Starscream which instead used a unique human woman Pretender shell seen in an off beat plot in the comics based on the S4 storyline. This Starscream was hard to find, making it difficult to fully assemble the sword for kids and collectors. When comparing the Heathers to the Decepticons, Chandler is the draconian Backdraft, McNamara is the withdrawn Shellrazor, with Dan specifically comparing Duke to the female Starscream toy because of the toy’s green colors and Duke’s Starscreamish tendencies.
