Hi, Hello, Good morning/afternoon or whatever it is where people may be.

I am UNBELIEVABLY stressed and anxious because it turns out I have to move in to uni accommodation earlier than expected and I am not prepared for it both mentally or in terms of packing.

If anyone could spare any pet photos or a story of smth cool that'd be grand, bc I am functioning at 100mph today and there is no stopping!!!

I dreampt there was a survival horror video game where you play as a feral cat, and your goal is to be adopted by a human who will both:

A)get you neutered

B)keep you inside (only being let out on a leash or in a catio)

This became more difficult the longer you played without successfully being adopted with both of these goals completed, because every few game cycles, your cat protagonist would have more kittens. You did not get a choice in the matter, because cats are not capable of planning ahead.

This could only be avoided if you somehow found an area where there weren't any other feral, stray, or outdoor cats - including your expanding horde of little baby followers, if they were old enough. You also did not get a choice in this matter, because cats do not understand things like incest and again are not capable of planning ahead. (Cats will literally have kittens with their siblings or parents if they can't find anyone else. The instinct to mate is that fucking strong. As far as their instincts are aware, the survival of their species depends on them reproducing. Because that's how evolution works.)

Once all of your kittens got old enough to breed, they would also start having kittens every few cycles. And every time this happened, not only would you gain all the kittens, you'd gain the other cats who'd been attracted beforehand. And this was not a 1:1 ratio. A female cat can have a litter with multiple male cats at the same time.

And this just kept going on every few cycles, with your group expanding exponentially.

Every now and then once the group reached a certain threshhold, some of the cats would split off and take over an area, no longer following you around.

And the only way for you to beat the game was to get all of them adopted by a human who met both winning conditions, even though they weren't following you anymore. Once (if) you got all the roaming cats adopted, you'd have to go back and start with the colony and try to get them adopted, with all the same hardships, and more, if you were far away from where humans lived.

If you met a human who got you neutered, but did not keep you inside, you'd just have to rejoin your roaming band of cats, now no longer reproducing yourself, but still requiring food and water, and doing damage to the local ecosystem. If it got to the point that the cats were putting too much pressure on the ecosystem that you drove a species extinct, you got an automatic game over, with no reloading past save files to fix it, and no way to stop your cats from choosing prey that wasn't endangered. Because cats do not understand the concept of being an invasive species, and they do not understand extinction, and they do not have the ability to plan ahead.

If you met a human who brought you inside, but didn't get you fixed, and they had other cats indoors who also weren't fixed, you'd begin a new stage of the game where the same thing happens, but now indoors. You keep having kittens. Which could lead to four possibilities:

A) the human got its shit together and got all of the cats neutered

B) the human got tired of having so many cats and started dumping them outside

C) the human adopted the kittens out. Potentially to humans who would not get them fixed or keep them inside

D) it became a hoarding situation and. yeah it would suck for everyone involved and dying would not win you the game UNLESS every single other one of your kittens was successfully adopted by a human with winning conditions.

As for when you hadn't been adopted yet, a very fun and creepy mechanic was that at night, especially with cats with dark colored fur, the only way you'd see them (or other animals with the ability to see in the dark) was their eyes reflecting red. It was very creepy and fun.

Larger animals would hunt you and your roving band, and dying from their attacks would only win you the game if all other cats were either successfully adopted or already dead.

Yes, you could win the game by dying. But only if every other cat spawned into the game so far was also dead or successfully adopted. And there was a random chance of humans bringing more intact cats into the game at any time by adopting them or dumping them outside.

This game was, obviously, designed to show how horrific the damage that feral, outdoor, and stray cats do is, and how difficult they are to manage if people refuse to do the right thing. TNR doesn't work, and in this game could directly lead to a 100% game over with no going back.

Because you can't fucking undo extinction.

And apparently this game had DLCs. That added in other feral and stray animals, like horses and dogs. I know this because a feral horse adopted my player-cat and started running around with our band trying to help get us adopted, by helping to draw human attention to our plight. (It's easy not to notice cats. It's a lot more difficult not to notice a fucking horse.)

We also had at least one dog join our group, which helped with adoption in some cases (posing cutely with the cats who were also posing cutely), but not in others (if the human was afraid of dogs).

To try to get adopted, if it's not obvious, you had to approach humans and try to figure out how to get them to like you enough that they'd bring you home. With some humans this was really easy, though whether they'd fit both criteria depended on their game-generated personality. With some humans it was impossible, though they might get you neutered and then dump you back outside.

Unfortunately, having a notched ear would make it even more difficult to convince some humans to adopt you who'd otherwise be willing, due to the myth that "feral cats are best left feral" *rolls eyes*

Too bad this game doesn't actually exist....

if there are any video game designers out there, please feel free to take these ideas and run.
