home alone today and I thought I’d work on a tribute to one of my other favorite movies! Agneepath holds a very special place in my heart. I’ve only seen it all the way through twice, but it’s frequently playing in the background during dinner and laundry folding and card games at my cousins’ house. My Dadi likes to shout “BITA AMITABH IS ON” cause she knows I’ll come running XD
fun fact btw he is. in fact. on tumblr. and has been since 2008. which for my non-desi people is like… elvis and al pacino rolled into one, posting daily on this website for sixteen years. does he check his tag? I have no idea.

should be sleeping or writing but instead i am sitting here completely obsessed with Gaitonde and Vijay's dynamic in Agneepath
Even though he seems to try hard to maintain a boundary, Vijay sees his Baba in Gaitonde. This is not a headcanon, he literally says that Gaitonde reminds him of his father. And Gaitonde willingly would have made him his son.
His mother didn't keep her son. His mother failed him before he had even picked up that gun. She loved her son, but not enough to put his trauma above hers. Instead of communicating, she shut down on him, she didn't see his anger, she didn't see the massive wound where it was coming from. She wanted to ignore what had happened in hopes of lessening her pain. But Vijay's pain was not one he could have silenced. He was just a little boy burying the torn body of his father. His rage was his pain, he had been wronged, his Baba had been wronged, his mother not even talking about it was a disservice to his father, it was wrong to him. They had been wronged and Vijay wanted to scream, he wanted to cry, he wanted to mourn. But he had no one to cry with, to understand him. He dies trying to get her to acknowledge the injustice they had faced.
But Gaitonde? Throughout the movie he kept reaching out to Vijay. He kept reachiing out to the boy who had doomed himself to a painful life, who had gotten blood on his hands before his voice had even cracked. Because he knew it wasn't without reason. Vijay had not fallen, he had jumped. And throughout the movie he kept wanting to know why, kept wanting to understand him, kept wanting to stop him from the spiral of self destruction. Gaitonde had seen the pained little boy in him, and he had tried saving that boy. Their conversation as he tries to dissuade Vijay from the suicidal mission, gives Vijay some semblance of desire for life. Gaitonde indirectly is the reason he dares to marry Kali and plan a future. His mother is the reason he loses her and subsequently any will to live.
Tumblr media
Interesting to note that Vijay, in any scene with anyone, makes a point of being in control in the room. When he is with his mother, he is fighting to prove his point, he doesn't back down. He is Shiksha's older brother, her protector. He is Kali's partner, he doesn't try to control her but she understands him better than anyone else, she lets his wishes come first. He is Rauf Lala's right hand man, but there is always a subtle power when he is with Lala, whether he showcases it by taking the shoes of the king of mumbai, or he commands his druggie son to hold his tongue. But here? Here he knocks, asks for permission, and keeps his head down unlike his interaction with Lala or anyone. Gaitonde is the only one with the priviledge of seeing him like this. He is the only one who meets the glimpses of the pain behind his rage. He is the only one Vijay defers to. Every single time they interact, for a moment atleast, Vijay seems to see a flutter of hope before it is gone.
I love this film so so so so much, there are so many nuances in the relationship Vijay shares with everyone. But this relationship is without doubt my favorite one in the entire story. It makes the ending all the more painful, because Gaitonde would know that if law and order had not failed a twelve year old, they could have saved so many lives, but most importantly the boy he had come to love.

I haven't seen this movie but videos like this are exactly what makes me want to see something.
There's the bad guy. You know he's the bad guy because he makes bad guy eyeballs and smile as soon as the main character isn't looking.
There's the hero. He feels nothing. He expresses nothing. He is nothing. He's just a blank slate, Bella Swan of action heroes. Except manly.
And there's the lady with an entourage of pirates of all shapes and sizes, who do belly dancing along with her to seduce the blank hero. They're gonna seduce him so hard. Who knows, maybe it's Hakesh he will end up liking! It's not gonna happen but a pirate can wish.

Movie Review | Agneepath (Anand, 1990)
Tumblr media
This review contains mild spoilers.
Having only seen this in pan-and-scan versions previously, I was struck on this rewatch by how damn good the movie looks. Every surface seems to shimmer, perfectly catching the perpetual magic hour lighting. Every frame feels huge. We don't just look at things, we look at them throw imposing low angles, imposing crane shots, and imposing low angles that turn into imposing crane shots and vice versa. Interiors are captured with the full weight of the deep focus cinematography and smoky blue lighting. Characters wear flashy suits and hide behind designer sunglasses. Imagine an entire movie shot like the opening scenes of Beverly Hills Cop II and you get the idea.
This flashy style makes more sense when you realize the movie uses as its primary inspiration the plot of Scarface, but making it distinctly Indian. The film is less concerned with anti-capitalist satire (for one thing, it's not clear what business the protagonist is in - he's against drugs and presumably against prostitution, leaving the only criminal activities we see him commit to be the murder of other criminals) and more concerned with familial bonds, and perhaps implicitly, nationalist fervour. The Sosa stand-in villain conducts his business from the Mauritius, happy to exploit his homeland from abroad, and has in his employ a white man, whom the hero derides for being a foreigner. This was made in the years before India underwent economic liberalization, and there's a sense of a country that's crumbling, especially when the high gloss visual style is directed towards the decaying slums the movie periodically detours into.
That sense of decay also manifests in the lead performance by Amitabh Bachchan, whose presence has always felt bigger than the movies and here seems to be a symbol as much as an actor. Bachchan is past his Angry Young Man prime from the '70s and before his patriarch phase starting in the 2000s, and his decision to play his character as a grotesque (not unlike Al Pacino in this movie's inspiration, replete with extremely distinct speaking voice) feels like the uglier dimensions of his persona corroding, warping his formidable star power into something more monstrous. The movie doesn't want us to dislike him too much. There's the no drugs policy, the fact that he's shown to help the community and is in fact so popular that when he ends up in the hospital, the locals riot so they can donate blood (despite the hospital being well stocked). But the fiery quality of his performance has a way of burning through the aesthetic trappings of the movie around him and lingering beyond the confines of the narrative. It's one of his best performances, and one of his weirdest. (Interesting, the villain is played by Danny Denzongpa, who was a friend of Bachchan's wife but avoided appearing alongside him earlier for fear of being outshined. I'd say he acquits himself well here, playing his role with sinister understatement. The super cool sunglasses help, of course.)
The movie does not have the cleanest of narratives (the stuff involving Mithun Chakraborthy in village idiot mode feel at odds with the overall tone) and clearly doesn't care about the musical numbers (one of them has Chakraborthy, best known for Disco Dancer, dancing in a disco but not exactly disco dancing, despite what the lyrics claim). But the constant presence of violence (this is quite a bit bloodier than the average Bollywood movie from this era) and the gangster story arc give this both a sense of sprawl and forward momentum. And there's an undeniably elemental power to the imagery, the hero being driven to revenge as blood drips from his father's face onto his own, the sea of bodies during the festival when the hero is ambushed, and the village going up in flames like the fires of hell during the climactic assault on the villain's mansion.

Here is an idea, stop forcing Hrithik's unhinged characters to be hinged😃
Aryan deserves to be fkn over the entire world. He can cause a lot of harm but instead he just steals shit that should be impossible. I mean I'm just saying he could have killed the queen in those first ten minutes. Or you know he can just troll the police instead. For eg he just breaks into a secure af place, like the treasury of some country, buries his symbol there and leaves without touching anything (ok maybe swipe something inconsequential as souvenir). Nobody knows why or how he did it but nothing is safe anymore and everyone is losing it.
Rajveer should definitely have been a thief not a secret agent and no he is not gonna tell anyone why he stole the Kohinoor, or why he drew attention to himself.
Kabir should continue on his very beautiful all of you could be traitors and i will find the most fucked up way to find out which one of you is actually that bitch. (Not you Aditi, you are an angel and we are glad to have you here). As a known "enemy" Of the state, he has a variety of ppl he can choose to backstab and honestly this shud be a weeding out the enemies amongst us thing for him. Let him kill a few politicians I say.
Vijay died an unhinged legend but honestly keep him alive and watch him go crazy as he loses his purpose, still is the king of the mumbai underworld but also has Mandva under him now. I wanna know how with a broken moral compass, he will choose to go forward when he really doesn't believe in laws.
I hate it when they try to make characters be reasonable like nooooo y'all go crazy, burn the world, be completely off your rocker.
Also I really want to know what Altaf from Mission Kashmir did after the end of the film cuz baby I get that you made the right choice blah blah blah, reunited with your adoptive father blah blah blah but they ain't gonna use all that to just pardon you sooooo what is your plan broski? Orrr rather Inayat tf are you gonna do, your son is pretty suicidal anyway, which again your fault, but you are gonna have to choose between country and the young boy you brought into your house, your family after wronging him. Are you gonna abandon him again or will you two be fleeing the country or what.

I just wish somebody would remind bollywood, that not every song needs to be about endless romantic love for someone, or about God, or about marriage, or parents.
Just some songs, can about life and its hard, and it sucks at times, but you still keep going for the love of it.
And not all songs need to be sung by Arijit Fucking Singh
