Woah, hold the phone! Did you know JFK’s mom and grandfather knew Sir Thomas Lipton?!?

I had no idea until I visited the house where President Kennedy was born in Brookline today!

The photograph of Rose Kennedy with Lipton is hanging in the second-floor hallway of the house. The Park Ranger giving the tour said it was taken on “one of his yachts”, but there’s not really enough background to tell if it’s one of the Shamrock racers or Lipton’s motoryacht, the Erin. It was taken in 1909, when Rose Kennedy and her father, John “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald, were part of a Boston Chamber of Commerce delegation touring Europe, and happened to be in Cowes at the same time Lipton was.

The Kennedys kept a tea set (what else?) given to them by Lipton in their dining room, viable right when you enter the house. Here’s a clearer picture— the flag on the right is Lipton’s “shamrock” personal flag, the one on the left looks like a blue version of the Royal Cork Yacht Club pennant. (Maybe it was blue back then?)

Lipton also gave the Kennedys pins with his shamrock insignia on them— Mrs. Kennedy displayed hers in a frame in her study. I’d love to know what the note underneath says!

Obviously it makes sense that Joseph and Rose Kennedy, as prominent Irish-American Bostonians, would celebrate a connection to one of the most famous Irishmen in the early-20th-century US. As a self-made millionaire who had entered elite society through charisma and determination, Lipton may have also been something of an aspirational figure for Joseph Kennedy with his own high ambitions for himself and his sons.

(John F. Kennedy himself would have been 14 when Thomas Lipton died, but I don’t think there’s any evidence they actually met. JFK’s most famous America’s Cup connection would be attending the 1962 competition and giving a speech for the competing crews.)

All in all, platonic relationships of every kind are very important in this drama. Be warned for the pregnancy and motherhood though if that's not your thing. (And for romance.)

New Category: Aro/Ace Character!

The last full week of October is Asexual Awareness Week, this year falling from Sunday, October 20th to Saturday, October 26th. In honor of this event, the next rec list category will be for fics featuring characters who are identified as aromantic and/or asexual, including arospec and acespec. This category is an audience request, and as a demiromantic asexual myself I'm excited to see what y'all have in store! As always, any fics in the category that have at least one member of One Direction are eligible for submission -- that member does not necessarily have to be the aromantic or asexual character; it could be a friend or a partner or a relative. Submit here, with submissions remaining open until the list posts on Tuesday, October 15th.

For anyone who may not be aware, the aromantic spectrum describes people whose experience of romantic attraction is rare, only in very specific circumstances, or absent. Similarly, the asexual spectrum describes people who do not experience sexual attraction, or only infrequently or in specific circumstances. These identities are a spectrum, with many sub-identities such as demiromantic/demisexual (only experiencing attraction once an emotional bond has been formed), aroflux/aceflux (fluctuating levels/types of attraction, including at least some points within aromanticism/asexuality), lithoromantic/lithosexual (experiencing attraction without the desire for reciprocation, with the attraction often fading if it is reciprocated), and many more.

It's also important to note that attraction and action can be completely separate -- aromantic people can date, asexual people can have sex, they can desire and enjoy those activities even without attraction. Other aromantic or asexual people may prefer to actively avoid romance or sexual activity, feeling uncomfortable or even repulsed by it. There is no single experience of aromanticism or asexuality, and no wrong way to be aro or ace.

So my fellow aros and aces, as well as allies -- submit your fave representation! I'd love to see stories about discovering or exploring aromantic and asexual identities, as well as stories where someone happens to be aromantic or asexual but it's not the focus, just a fact about them.
