Hi! I created a Tumblr account just for this reason—I want to freely express my opinions without worrying about others judging me. My Facebook is full of college friends and relatives, and I’m not sure if they would appreciate my opinions on certain topics.
I've got a lot on my plate, but when I opened Google News and saw that the Chinese Air Force dropped flares in the path of the Philippine Air Force, it made me stop and think: What can I do to help? How will this affect me? How will this affect my family?
I'm a bit concerned about what our government's next move will be. According to ABS-CBN News, they plan to discuss this within the week and come up with an appropriate response.
China always mentions that they want this issue resolved peacefully, but their actions suggest otherwise. If the Philippines allows itself to be bullied while under the watch of our allies, China may perceive us as a mere speck they can easily disregard. Although I hope this never leads to war, the ongoing tensions over this territorial dispute make me anxious, especially considering our limited equipment.
I don't want my husband to go to war. We have young children, and if other countries or UNCLOS allow China to be aggressive, it would show a disregard for the 2016 arbitration ruling and international laws. This would also suggest that China could easily capture Taiwan. It's been several years since the ruling, yet China continues to create tension. This situation could significantly impact my work and our future.
I will end this by saying that I'll pray for our country's safety. Even though we are clearly being bullied, I hope our president and other leaders will wisely and strategically plan their next move. Their decisions are unclear to me, especially after a recent video showed Chinese Coast Guard personnel taking or stealing firearms from the Philippine Coast Guard without any response from our side. It makes me wonder if they are waiting for a serious incident, like the loss of life, before they take a firm stand for our country.

Sexism in the Philippines — A Showcase of ABS-CBN’s Representational Disparity
(Opinion)
In the realm of global politics, women’s rights remain a highly contentious issue. Women’s autonomy over themselves consists not only of their bodies, but of how they are perceived, and as such, major news networks play a big role in ensuring that women are properly represented.
ABS-CBN’s coverage in reporting the case of Alice Guo describes her as “losing her cool” and “becoming emotional”, right in the headline, reinforcing negative stereotypes of women. Meanwhile, when Robin Padilla, a sitting Senator of the Philippines casually stated that men have “sexual rights” over their wives and that women must “submit to their husbands” in a senate hearing, his remarks are glossed over. The article instead zeroes in on Lorna Kapunan educating the senate panel on consensual sex, without highlighting the context that got those events to happen in the first place.
The state of major news media’s portrayal of women must be reevaluated. For ABS-CBN, one of the most prominent, historical news outlets in the Philippines, it’s disappointing to see there has not been more progress in that regard. Regardless of the weight of Guo’s alleged espionage, focusing on ad hominem clickbait headlines is not the journalistic standard which ABS-CBN should be holding themselves to. Gender equality means holding men to the same level of accountability as women.
Many young Filipinos simply will not stand for blatant misogyny anymore—where major news outlets failed to call Padilla out, popular social media sites like Instagram, Facebook, and X have been abuzz with clapbacks. When this disparity was brought up to college students (first time voters) at Ateneo de Manila University, one anonymous respondent replied, “‘I don’t have to agree with someone to want them to be represented properly.” This is a clear indication of the way which the country’s educated youth are moving forward–and networks that cater to nationwide audiences need to catch up.

He is competing in the women’s division because he has not undergone hormone replacement therapy or gender reassignment therapy, despite identifying as a trans man. In fact, Bacyadan has proudly claimed several times that he has never taken testosterone and even stood up to the Russian vovinam team in 2023 after they requested that his gold medal win be nullified because he was a “man”. Bacyadan won the 2023 world championship in women’s vovinam, a Vietnamese martial art that combines elements of boxing, judo and wushu, a Chinese martial art. If Bacyadan earns a medal in Paris, he will become the first trans male medallist in Olympic history. He told ABS-CBN News that he is proud to represent the LGBTQ+ community. “We will perform better to make a difference,” he said. “My biggest motivation is my family, my tribe in Kalinga, and the people who believe I can win a medal at the Paris Olympics.”

ABS-CBN: 790 liters of oil-water mixture collected from MV Mirola-1
Mirola-1 is the third vessel to cause an oil leak in Bataan this month.
The [Philippine Coast Guard or] PCG is also responding to the oil spill from MTKR Terranova with 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel oil and MTKR Jason Bradley with 5,500 liters of diesel.
According to PCG, “very thin oil sheens” are still observed at ground zero, as of Monday, but control measures are in place, including oil spill booms laid, skimmers on site, and oil dispersants being employed, while fabrication of metal capping is still ongoing.
Meanwhile, the coast guard and contracted salvor FES Challenger Salvour and Builders are continuing salvage operations on MTKR Jason Bradley.
2024 Aug. 5
It is projected that almost 46,000 fisherfolk will be affected by the oil spill if left uncontrolled, particularly in the National Capital Region (NCR), Central Luzon, and Region 4-A. Currently, Pambansang Lakas ng Mamamalakaya (PAMALAKAYA) reported that 29,000 fisherfolk from Cavite alone, were at risk, while 9,000 fisherfolk in Bataan.
In an earlier report of Bulatlat, those situated in the coastal areas were victims of severe flooding during the onslaught of Carina, particularly in Navotas, where the Navotas Bay Reclamation Project is being built. The project affected 1,000 families, while the New Manila International Airport (NMIA) has displaced around 700 families in Bulacan, according to Laderas.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirmed that SL Harbor Bulk Terminal Corporation, a subsidiary of San Miguel Shipping and Lighterage Corporation, chartered the said vessel to transport the industrial fuel oil. SMC is also the company behind the NMIA reclamation and the Mindoro oil spill last year.
2024 Aug. 5
Bulatlat on Twitter @bulatlat:
‘Hold San Miguel and PH government accountable:’ Environmentalists, fisherfolk, and scientists hold a press conference today to expose the impacts of compounding problems of recent oil spills, reclamation projects, and inadequate disaster response in the onslaught of Carina.
