23.11.23 | the grand hobonichi conspiracy!!!
i finally broke into my hobonichi hon a5. i nearly didn't film a single second because it was two in the morning and my first instinct has never been to record what i'm doing. so many of my favourite things from my planners, fountain pens, howl's moving castle, and my little ghost friend are in a singular photo. i'm currently thinking about the fact i might need another planner, though.

Wanting to do a check on who does TTRPG design in notebooks.
Right now I've mainly just been using it as a way to focus on brainstorming and writing down thoughts. I'm trying to also work in ways to also do commonplace book stuff to write down interesting ideas from articles and posts from others as well as write down my favorite mechanics from my research.
Any insights from others about ways to utilize physical note taking into their design, or need a reason to show off their own notebook?

those reading journal pages are so pretty! how did you make them? :0
thanks! i found someone on reddit who shared .pdfs of the hobonichi a5 dashed grid pages, pasted two of them next to each other on an a4 sized canvas in procreate, and started placing text boxes (u have to mess with the 'leading' to get the lines to sit in the rows of boxes u how u want them)
the rest is just hand-drawn on there (sans the book cover obviously)
Tumblr media
bc the text alignment is set to 'justified' it does that uneven spacing between letters sometimes (unlike a word processor that would only add the spacing between words), but i like how it looks tbh!
again this is wayyyy slower and more finicky than just typing in a document on an actual keyboard but.. sometimes being efficient.. is worse.....🤨 (if youre me)

My Journaling Set-Up (As of Late)⭐️
Tumblr media
hi friends! ~
i have finally sat down to talk about how i journal. i get tons of questions related to my journals in my inbox, so i wqnted to dedicate a post talking about my three main journals - my diary, my planner, and my commonplace book. thanks so much for your patience, i hope this post will be helpful! 🤎
my journal/dairy
Tumblr media
this is my regular travelers notebook, which i use for daily journaling! i tend to make small collages in the corners, using stickers, scrap paper, or mementos from my day. i write about my day, usually in the morning or right before bed. some entries will be short, and some others are much longer. i like to write everyday but i do occasionally miss days. my favorite insert is the dotted insert from travelers company!
my planner
Tumblr media
for planning, i’ve been using my passport travelers notebook. since its summer, i have found this to be the perfect size! i use this undated weekly insert from travelers company, and i split each day in half. the left side is for any events or reminders, and the right side is for tasks. i plan on continuing this set up when i return to grad school in the fall, but i’ll use a blank insert for my to-do’s since i’ll have more tasks. i always keep a muji pen in the loop for jotting down tasks on the go! i tend to keep the pages minimalistic, so i’ll sometimes use a stamp or a sticker to spice the pages up.
my commonplace
Tumblr media
ah my commonplace book! i get the most questions about this, rightfully so because commonplacing can be very stress-inducing. i should start off by saying that i don’t use my commonplace book in the traditional sense. the term derives from the process of copying down passages with the intention of compiling others thoughts and writings. i use this method, but i almost always incorporate my own thoughts on what i’m reading and writing down. i can’t help it!
this notebook is the midori dotted a5, and i use the midori paper cover. i have a very loose indexing/categorizing system at the moment; green is for reading, purple is for my writing, and yellow is for etc. i use a graphite pencil to draw a light line in between entries. i commonplace the most about books and articles that i read, and then i love to do more long-form journaling and writing in here as opposed to my travelers notebook. i found myself overthinking my indexing system, which led me to not use this notebook in fears of messing up. my #1 advice would be to just start using your notebook, and index/categorize your entries as you go! the best notebook is the one that is used.
that’s it for my current journaling system! i seem to be in a good groove, so i’m hoping i stick with it. i’m more than happy to answer any questions you may have. happy journaling friends 💌

IT HAS ARRIVED
To celebrate the anniversary of Tears of the Kingdom's release, and to revisit Hyrule, we have put together a FREE 127-page cookbook zine for fans to enjoy. Link to downloadable PDF at the bottom.
About the Zine
The goal of this zine has been to imagine and capture snapshots of Link and Zelda’s internal and external journey between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. One of the central mechanics in both games is cooking; you cook to stay alive, you cook to improve your abilities, and you cook to forge relationships with other characters through side quests. We wanted to centre this mechanism, so decided to frame the zine as Link and Zelda’s joint travel journal.
In these pages you will therefore find a collection of short stories, small illustrations, and numerous recipes. Our team has been hard at work, collaborating and developing ideas to flesh out Link and Zelda’s journey.
Each short story is written from either Link or Zelda’s perspective. They are part narrative, part journaled notes. You will find that they have been given each their font to represent their writings. Zelda’s is the more refined one, while Link’s is the more sprawling one. I’m sure you will see the difference.
You will also find small notes and letters from other characters – notably Tulin, Teba, Riju, and Kilton – as well as an excerpt from the Lucky Clover Gazette.
The recipes themselves have been fashioned as though they were written by Link and Zelda. This does mean their fonts have been used, but we hope any difficulty in reading it is forgiven on the basis that the overall conceit of the zine is preserved. Should there be a great demand, we may look into creating a second edition using friendlier fonts.
As for the illustrations, these have been created both with the goal of illustrating the dishes – and processes where necessary – and to imply that Link and Zelda also illustrate their journeys.
All our artists, short story writers, and recipe writers have come into this zine with different skills and abilities. There may therefore be subtle differences in styles, which we have chosen to retain to exhibit each contributor’s personal flair.
Finally, I want to thank those who have contributed their time and skills to the creation of this zine: Alex, Cenza, Deldon, Mina, Rose, Sam, Scarlet, Terek, and Mr Theodore. It’s been a pleasure working with you all on this project, and I look forward to the next time our paths cross.
Thank you.

Print Files Instructions
These files have been formatted for an A5 Linen Wrap individual print through Lulu.com. The current listed price is £24.23 | $30.34 (shipping not included).
To give the illustrations a chance to shine, we recommend printing with Premium Colour on paper 80# White. To get your print copy, follow these steps:
Create an account with Lulu.com. It's completely free. If you already have an account, simply log in.
Go to 'Create' in the top bar and select 'Print Book'.
Click 'Start my Print Book'.
Under 'Select a Goal', choose 'Print Your Book'. Follow the remaining instructions on the page and press 'Design Your Project'.
Under 'Interior File Upload', upload the interior files found in the downloadable Print Files Folder (see above). This should automatically fill in book size and page count.
Under 'Interior Color', choose 'Premium Color'. For a cheaper print, choose 'Standard Color'.
Under 'Paper Type', choose '80# White – Coated'. For a cheaper print, choose '60# White'.
Under 'Book Binding', choose 'Linen Wrap'. The cover has been designed specifically for this and is not compatible with any other binding option.
Select your choice of colour for linen and print. We recommend tan (linen) and gold (print). These are the colours that will be on the linen wrap, underneath the paper cover.
Under 'Cover Finish', select 'Glossy' or 'Matte' according to your preferences. This makes no difference price-wise. We recommend 'Matte'.
Under 'Book Cover Design', upload the cover file found in the downloadable Print Files Folder (see above).
You should now be able to see a preview under 'Book Preview'. Check that you are satisfied with the result and select 'Review Book'. This will take you to a page from which you can order your individual print copy. Due to the size of the file, Lulu may take a few minutes to process the files before you can place the order, but this should take no more than 10 minutes. Simply go have something to eat, then refresh the page when you return and you should be able to order your copy.
Happy cooking!

how i've finished inktober every year for eight years and counting
Every time I mention around other artists that I finish inktober every year (meaning I draw and ink 31 drawings, one every day in October), I get questions like "how???", so I figured I'd make a post about it on the off chance it's helpful to someone. Please note that all my advice is based on my personal experience and you're a different person so what works for me may not work for you, and you can do whatever you want forever.
What it boils down to for me is two basic rules: 1) keep it simple and 2) manage your expectations.
Tools
Paper/sketchbook
I started my first inktober in my journal at the time, and because I'm neurotic like that, I've had to do every subsequent inktober in whatever journal I was using at that point.
Tumblr media
The benefit of this is that each journal has had a page size of A5 or smaller, which can be tricky when trying to get in a lot of detail, but on the other hand forces you to limit the size of your drawings to a pretty managable size.
Paper type can also be important! Last year in 2023, my journal was a Moleskine sketchbook (image 1), which was actually designed to handle some degree of wet media, which was a game-changer for me as an ink wash enjoyer. Don't get me wrong, I've been using ink washes in most of my previous journals as well, but inking is a lot nicer when your paper isn't constantly buckling (image 2) or pilling and the ink isn't bleeding all over the place, inclunding through the page (image 3). Pages that stay flat instead of buckling are also a lot easier to scan or photograph, if like me you want to post your art online.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In short, my inktober paper recommendation is to use a sketchbook no larger than A5, and go for one with nice, thick paper if you intend to use wet media.
Sketching
I sketch everything with a single 6H pencil that I got from my brother in 2019. Because the lead is so hard, it allows me to scribble to my heart's content without the sketch getting too dark or hard to erase. Sometimes I'll refine the sketch with a HB mechanical pencil, which shows up really nicely on top of the 6H lines, but I may skip that step if I'm feeling lazy or the first sketch is clean enough.
Tumblr media
Inking
I've used a variety of art supplies in my inktober drawings. For the most part I've always stuck to greyscale, with the exception of a couple of red or gold accents some years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My main inktober tools are a set of Micron fineliners in various sizes, and liquid India ink, which I use with a dip pen and with brushes. I usually mix up a mid-tone ink wash in a small bottle, and use that throughout the month.
Tumblr media
Fineliners pros: portable, require minimal setup, can use on the sofa or in bed or wherever Fineliners cons: creating texture and filling large areas is a lot more time-consuming. In 2021 I did inktober exclusively in fineliner because I was tired and couldn't be bothered to deal with liquid ink, but I ended up spending more time than maybe ever on the drawings because it took so long to add texture with pens.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ink pros: you can achieve small details with a dip pen as well as quick texture and fill in large areas with a brush and ink washes Ink cons: can be messy (protip from 2022 Liekki, don't spill ink water all over your laptop), usually you have to sit at a table of some kind, you need to wash your brushes and dip pens, if your paper isn't designed for wet media, it'll buckle or bleed
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pick your inking tools and techniques based on how much time you have!
Prompts/ideas/subject matter
I've always stuck to the "official" prompt list, because it brings me joy to scroll through the tag of the day on instagram and see how others interpreted the same prompt. Or, rather, it used to bring me joy to do this, until instagram's enshittification stole our ability to look at tags. Maybe I'll have some luck with that on Cara going forward; here's hoping.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for ideas, sometimes they come easy, sometimes it's like pulling teeth and I have to enlist all my friends to brainstorm with me (sorry, y'all). When in doubt, draw the first thing that comes to mind when you read the prompt; don't overthink it (like I often do). I like to try to come up with a less obvious interpretation of a prompt, but this is also where I often get stuck and have to harass my loved ones for ideas. Sometimes it helps to relate the prompt to a tv show/book/etc. you're into; I've done quite a bit of inktober fanart, as well as art of various DnD cahracters from games I've played/DM'd. If all else fails, just look at what everyone else is drawing that day.
Time management
Be realistic about how much time you have in a day to work on inktober, and then set your expectations accordingly. If you only have an hour, stick to a size and level of detail that you can realistically finish in an hour. I've done some very quick scribbles in my years of inktober when I've been busy that day.
Tumblr media
My personal philosophy is that I try not to plan too much ahead; I don't do any sketching until day of, and ideally I don't try to come up with ideas for a prompt or at least decide on an idea until the day before at the earliest. Containing each drawing in one day helps me have realistic expectations of what's doable. This does mean drawing late into the night sometimes after procrastinating or struggling to find an idea all day, but it's what works for me.
If your goal is to complete inktober, it's better to do a small shitty drawing in ten minutes than to fall behing by starting something way too ambitious that you'll never be able to finish in a day.
Secret third rule!
Accept the fact that you aren't going to be happy with every drawing.
Inktober was created as an exercise to practice inking. Think of your drawings as sketches, not finished masterpieces. Some of them will be bad, at least in your own eyes. Sometimes you'll put a lot of effort into something that just doesn't work out. For example:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To quote Joe Hills, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of practice. So you fucked up today's drawing. Tomorrow is a new day – that's the beauty of inktober. "Ever tried, ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." (Samuel Beckett) Progress isn't linear, either; some years are consistently mediocre, other years it's all over the place with a couple bangers and a couple really shitty ones.
Every inktober I've made drawings I love,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
drawings I'm indifferent to,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and drawings that straight up suck.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I'm at peace with that.
Thanks for reading what turned into a pretty long post, and I hope some of it was helpful. Happy inktobering!

I would love to know more about your journal system and how you use them.
Hello there, sweet soul. Thank you for your interest in my journal system.
I currently have three books in use: i. Hobonichi Weeks ii. Leuchtturm1917 Pocket iii. Leuchtturm1917 A5
Tumblr media
⋆⋅ ˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ ⋅⋆
Hobonichi Weeks
The Hobonichi Weeks is my planner. The weekly layout works really well for my weekly and daily to-do lists.
Fun fact: A lovely friend told me about how she calls her to-dos “main quests” and side quests”—I’ve been adapting this genius idea and, ever since, life feels a little less of a burden.
⋆⋅ ˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ ⋅⋆
Leuchtturm1917 Pocket
This one is an experiment. Since my A5 journal is too big to carry around, I introduced the pocket size into my setup. Its main purpose is to accompany me on the go, so that I always have a notebook on hand wherever I go, whenever I’d need to. It gives me comfort in a way and comes in quite handy, to be honest. The pages are being filled with whatever I want to fill them; there really are no limitations or rules.
I’ve also started experimenting with manifestations. So, in the morning, usually while having my morning coffee, I sit down and write down some manifestations for the day • to set the mood for what’s to come, to eventually be able to welcome good omens into my days since I realised I need a certain openness to be able to welcome good things into my life. It’s been working pleasantly so far—I really enjoy the habit of sitting down in the morning, setting the mood for the day.
⋆⋅ ˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ ⋅⋆
Leuchtturm1917 A5
This is the main book of them all; this one is really dear to my heart. Its purpose is to record my (daily) life, collect memories, and document what interests me at various points in time. It’s a mixture of daily journal entries, spreads about special events, copied articles that intrigue me, book reviews, thoughts on music I listen to, ephemera collected during trips, and photos captured throughout my days—all neatly gathered in one bound book.
I cannot emphasise this enough • life has been so much more meaningful, even the most mundane things, ever since I consciously started recording bits and pieces of my life. Especially keeping a record of my own thought processes. There was a time in my life when I worked through problems in my head by writing spoken-word poetry about topics that concerned me. It fills me with so much joy to read them back and at some point I realised just how much my inner state has grown and how much I’ve figured out along the way.
I feel like we all go through so much but we don’t take enough time to reflect or give ourselves credit for everything we’ve endured and achieved. This notebook serves that exact purpose: to collect, reflect, and connect—to cherish life a little more.

So I just made the most half-assed, spur of the moment notebook, and I think it looks pretty cute 🥹
Tumblr media
Process pics + lil video bellow 👇
Disclaimer: I've done much better binding before, this was a very last minute, let's just have fun, quick thing, so don't judge it too hard 🥺
So! I was sorting through some papers and such, and I found these loose signatures I had taken out of an old notebook and never did anything with. Figured I could turn them into a cute lil sketchbook!
Tumblr media
I ended up using just the three bigger stacks (the smaller I'll do later), and some used watercolour paper to make the inner case a bit sturdier.
Took out the fraying old threads, bound the three signatures together, and then stitched the harder paper cover.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then I used an old sketch painting (I have LOADS of discarded paintings just laying around), and glued it to the cover (with just good ol' glue stick).
The painting is just acrylic on sketch paper (thinner than watercolour), so the cover is quite floppy and has a nice plastic finish. The paint was layed quite thick in some areas and textured, which makes it super nice to touch.
Size is slightly smaller and thinner than a B6, but bigger than A6. Here's a comparison with my A5 journal:
Tumblr media
Okay that's it! Bye! 💙
