In Bliss's defense
Sit down, and look at the pretty water. We need to have a talk.
Anyone of the PPG fandom, who cares, the hate around Bliss is overrated and leaves a more hurtful message than people realize.
And I was a part of that crowd at some point, but I was wrong, and im calling myself out.
People virtue signaling hate around her always somewhat rubbed me the wrong way, especially when the rant boiled down to "She's pandering to black people!" Erhm, she's dark skinned, so any darker skinned person of any race can identify with her, and in that case...
"so what if she's here for pandering?"
For a decade, the ppg has pandered to white people. There are no diverse people of color from the cast. Also, whenever this topic of "inclusivity in media" comes up, there's this crowd that runs up with their shields wailing, "but kids or 'x crowd' shouldn't care about race! Or the way main character's look! It should be about the message."
And then the 2023 Live Action Little Mermaid came along, and society really showed their true colors.
There were people, who spoke different languages, in the depths of the comments, reprimanding the idea of Halle Bailey playing Ariel. Black people were posting these reaction videos condemning Disney for changing the race of such a "beloved classic" and white people working together to make A.I renditions of "what should have been."
And that is such a traumatic experience that gets gaslit into "if it doesn't matter what Ariels race is, why change her race?"
That question was asked so many times, ironically.
So, Bliss is what happens, when people who are honest about imagery realize their is a lack of a common worldly reality in a popular media. Why not have a dark skinned Powerpuff girl, when younger Dark-skinned girls and boys will definitely watch the show?
Representation, seriously, does matter. And children of color shouldn't be denied pandering just because, we as a society, have our grandstand hang-ups over 'what is pandering, what is not'.
At this point, we can't tell that non poc characters ARE being pandered, 24/7.
I have a theory that in the late 90's to early 2000's media shifted into white fragility code. Basically it was an unspoken rule of, "if we don't talk about it, it doesn't exist!" It was the height of excluding poc characters. It was the height of reducing poc roles to their stereotypes. It was the height of recognizing "this is the white version, this is the black version."
White people were behind a lot of popular media, and they were very scared to talk about black people. How couldn't they when civil rights and slavery were right up the crack of their asses? Hell, as of September 17th, 2023, Ruby Bridges is still alive and well.
Yes, her!
I feel like this created an Era of normalization. This notion that "white people can be anything! But people of color must ALWAYS be people of color."
Another day, I will talk about how white people have to shoe horn 'minority tropes' into even their fanatical stories to create empathy, which is always a glaring red flag when I see white people attempting to talk about privellege with monster 'white coded' cartoon characters. But for now, I'll say this.
Bliss' personality is mid at worse.
Okay, so people latched unto the fact that she gets angry as a dark skinned character to dismiss her. Mainly, black people were upset about this.
I'm starting to see the problem with that.
People say that her unique, colorful design is bad.
Subjective, but also their are underlying tones.
People say her story messes up the Powerpuff girls story, which is my biggest red flag.
Okay, let me just get something off my chest.
My fellow black women and girls who are also creators and are creating. Let me remind you.
We, as black women and girls are allowed to portray anger.
Flaws.
Misfortune.
Unattractiveness.
Non conformating ideas.
Trauma.
Etc
And still be interesting, likeable main character's without being urbanized.
This also goes to Poc who are Dark-skinned and non poc who are creating diverse casts.
But mainly black women, as I've learned it's best to give advice, like that, within my own community. It is important that we prioritize our image or else we get .. well, what I'm ranting about.
Anyway, just because a dark skinned person is non urban does not mean they have to be this... precious, agreeable cinnamon bun 24/7.
That makes the most blandest characters.
They have no real stakes nor relatability!
Take some notes from Japanese animation. Japanese people do not focus their stories on 'what it means to be Japanese' 24/7 in anime.
And I'm tired of westerners turning Dark-skinned girls and women into 'sista soldier's ✊️' everytime they need a dilemma on a screen!
Bliss is a cute, fun, character who has temper tantrums that effects her story.
We are allowed to do that! To portray a dark skinned character with conflict! To show that she has flaws!
This isn't a stereotype! What the actual hell!
What would make it a stereotype is if she was being shown in a horrible light. Like she's overly sassy, and that's her only quality. She's been reduced to constantly telling the crowd, "hey, I'm dark skinned! Look, I'm about to do something 'only dark skinned people do', amirite? Amirite?" 😃
Bliss' situation is non color coded. We all know someone who deals with bad news, badly. Hell, Buttercup from the og series is more of a 'stereotype to Black people' then bliss is, and society knows it! When they go to make anyone Dark-skinned, more than likely they'll make it Buttercup. Hell, even the show runners know that shit!
That... is a stereotype.
Because, obviously, the cute bubbly one, can't be black. Nor can the quality leader everyone wants to be.
But the tough one with an attitude? Um, duh!
And I'm not gonna lie, I love me some Buttercup. I'll do an essay on her character someday, but I'm just trying to point out a very real problem.
It's no coincidence that when they wanna shoehorn diversity in, they have no issue choosing Buttercup over and over again.
That in the grander scheme of things, put what it means to be a poc girl, in a box. Very upsetting when you see it for what it is.
Bliss has tempers because it contributes to her story and character arch, two things people creating poc characters are very afraid to do. Because we can't have dark skinned characters with traits that are not outright agreeable.
Or 100% liberal.
Even though we have a history of white characters that are flawed, controversial, and crass that go down in history as icons.
Because, the reality is, no one likes a black bitch! It's enough if she's black, but now she's a bitch!?
Goes back into my theory of when white fragility was at its height in the early 2000's. All these white bitches were getting movie lead roles and stamps of approval.
WHERE THE HELL WERE THE BLACK BITCHES?
Oh yeah. They were getting urbanized and glorifying dysfunction from within their respective communities 🙄
Not saying white women were always represented in a healthy way, but they were... roles of interest, desirability, nurture, femininity, images of ideal, relatability, etc.
The list goes on.
And that affected the way society views how to create poc. Suddenly, if you don't wanna be offensive, just have a poc being the ambitious voice of reason! If they're not that, they must have a pinch of black characiture and be the most grounded.
Again, sad really.
So bliss to me, is an okay character. She's cute and funny, and she has an actual story.
Sure there wasn't an original 4th Powerpuff girl, but it's not like she ruins the pre existing story. She's another character introduced with her own narrative. And I can respect that the creators of the 2016 reboot noticed the importance of showing that literally ANYONE can be a Powerpuff Girl, without chickening out and creating another non poc design and minority coding them.
Like, there is an official dark skinned Powerpuff girl. A CANON DARKSKINNED POWERPUFF GIRL. THAT IS AWESOME.
So good job 2016 reboot. You did something right.

Valentine’s Day, a full 24 hours where people get into a frenzy of either showing how in love they were, complaining about the capitalist propaganda, or wallowing in their own woe of not having found anyone to spend the day with. And, of course, all three scenarios prove to be true in the craziest, hormone-filled place of all: Highschool.
“I swear if Jamie got me one of those chocolate bars from the candy machine again…” You heard one sophomore complain to their friend as they passed you by in the hallway. A small smile crept on your face when you remembered Jamie carrying a toddler-size teddy bear out of their car earlier this morning.
Out of the corner of your eye you watched as the theater kids began with their annual project of singing telegrams to raise some money for their spring musical. You wondered how many renditions of Bruno Mars’s “Just the way you are” you’ll hear this year interrupting your classroom.
Contrary to popular belief, you loved it.
Ever since you were a child you loved Valentine’s Day. You enjoy watching people express their love in so many, creative ways. You like every picture, watch every video and swoon a little with the classical proposal you see at least once every February 14th. And yes, you firmly believed that love should be expressed every day and not just once a year, but there was just something so magical about this day where everyone celebrated love and the energies were filled with hopes and dreams.
You walked through the halls with ease and with a silly love song playing in your brain. You smiled at the students that were already waiting at the door of your classroom and wished them a good morning as you unlocked the door for them. There were still a few minutes before the bell rang, so there wouldn’t have been any problems for them to just take their seats a bit earlier.
“Oh my god! Who got you those flowers?” You asked one of your students as they came in carrying a whole bouquet.
“Me!” They laughed “I love me the most and I can buy my own flowers whenever I want to”
You laughed along with them “I can’t argue with that amazing logic. Happy Valentine’s Day, sweetheart”
“Happy Valentine’s Miss L/N!” Your student said and went in and took their seat.
In the meantime, your eyes couldn’t help but wander to the classroom in front of yours. Feeling your heart beat a little bit faster when you noticed the lovely curly-haired man that sat at the desk.
You looked at the time and bit your lip slightly. Yes, you had enough time.
“Good morning, Mr. Irwin!” You called, knocking on his open door.
The man turned at the sound of his name, a wide smile forming on his face the moment he saw you leaning against the doorframe.
Ashton Irwin, the music teacher. One of the youngest, most handsome, and most beloved teachers in the whole school. He was one of the many additions to the staff alongside yourself and a few others last year after many of the senior teachers finally retired. It would’ve been a lie to say that you didn’t fancy him from the first moment you saw him. His hazel eyes and easy smile; the way he laughed and how easy it was for him to make friends with everyone, even yourself; how all of his students love him, even the troublemakers. He was just so effortlessly cool, it would be impossible to deny your little crush on him.
“Y/N!” He said, never have been one for formalities “Good morning! I thought you were one of my students, I was about to tell you to nod off somewhere else because my first class is in the third period”
“And you need the peace and quiet to last a bit more? Ah, so easy the life of an artist. Never having to read essays about how William Shakespeare would’ve “ate” in booktok” He chuckled, you blushed “I’ll leave you to enjoy your free time”
“I never said you should leave,” He pouted “I do enjoy the company of adults in my free time” His eyes lingered on you for a bit “You look rather festive”
You looked down at your pink shirt; red, pink, and white nails with hearts drawn on them; and unconsciously touched your heart-shaped earrings as you blushed.
“Would you believe me if I say that the shirt was white until a stranger put their red socks on the washing machine?”
Ashton let out a loud laugh “I would believe anything you say, Y/N. Though I didn’t take you for someone that loved V-Day”
“I’ve always loved it,” You confessed with a shrug “It was my parent’s favorite holiday, always making a big show out of it and including me and my siblings with a big lunch before they went out on a date of their own. I loved their love and I guess that made me love love in general”
You raised your eyes and found him sitting back on his chair, eyes focused on you as a soft smile adorned his face.
“It’s silly, I know-”
“Not at all,” Ashton said, ever so calmly “I love that story, thank you for sharing it”
“What about you?” You asked, looking around the decoration-free classroom “Not in the mood for love?”
“Ehh, I didn’t put that much thought into it. I never really do unless I have someone to share it with”
“Well, I’m in the same boat as you. But I still love to celebrate it” You shrugged, ignoring the way both your eyes gleamed with something more than recognition when you both admitted to being single “Anyway, I should go to class. The bell’s about to ring”
“Y-yeah! Of course” He blushed “Have a nice day, Y/N”
“You too, Ash” You smile as you walked back to your class and ignored the “ooohs” of your students when you entered, looking back at the neighboring class to see Ashton smiling at that.
*
It was almost the end of the school day when someone knocked at your classroom door.
“Excuse me, Miss L/N?” One of the theater kids popped their head in “We have a very important sing-a-gram to send”
“Oh?” You asked in a teasing tone, making your students giggle “Of course, dear. And who would that be for?”
A group of teenagers came in, all wearing knowing smiles as one of them said: “It’s actually for you, miss. From a secret admirer”
The class absolutely went mad at that, cheering and hollering as the group started to sing a beautiful version of “All of Me” by John Legend. You sat there absolutely bewildered, smiling widely in awe at the gesture. You thanked them after they were done, congratulating them on their talent and wishing them a good day. And if you thought you'd seen a glimpse of a curly head watching over the door’s window, it was most likely your imagination.
*
As you were sorting out the last of your papers and got everything ready to go home, your ears picked up a familiar melody coming from the class across the hall. A small smile played on the corner of your lips as you ventured over there, knowing what you might find.
Ashton was sitting at the piano that stood in the middle of the room. His fingers gracefully pressed on the tiles as the melody soared. He was so concentrated that he didn’t even hear you come in.
“Cause all of me, loves all of you. Love your curves and all your edges, all your perfect imperfections” He sang.
You’ve heard him sing before, but that didn’t take away from the fact that it took your breath away each time he did. His voice was on a lower register, calm and soothing as the words dripped like honey out of him. It completely hypnotized you as you leaned against the door frame, watching over him with a new, indescribable feeling inside your heart.
“Cause I’ll give you all of me if you’d give me all of you. Cards on the table I’m showing all my hearts, risking it all for a chance…” The slight change of lyrics called your attention “Cause all of me loves all of you. You’ll be my end and my beginning if you’d have me mmm-hmm…”
He ended up humming the rest of the song, closing his eyes as he let the music move him. That is something you always admired about him; his passion for what he does. It didn’t matter if it was teaching, playing, or even talking to you about the last book he read and he thinks you might like it. Ashton’s heart always had space for more, and if he were to share it completely, you knew you’d want to be a part of it.
When he was done, his hands kept still, ghosting over the tiles. He sighed and grabbed a pen and a notebook and he started scribbling on it.
“That was gorgeous, Ash”
The sound of your voice startled him. He turned to you so quickly that you were sure it gave him whiplash. He was a blushing mess as he opened his mouth to say something, but no words came out.
“Sorry,” You said, “I didn’t mean to-”
“No!” He shouted, cringing at his own tone of voice “No, I’m sorry- I’m used to being the only one here. And-” He sighed, not knowing what else to say “Did you listen to all of it?”
“Yeah, I really liked it” You smiled softly at him, walking forwards “Must be a really special person for you to rewrite a whole song for them”
“It’s, uhm… It’s something I’ve been working on with my students” Ashton admitted “Trying to adapt songs to their own situations and feelings… It might help them connect with lyricism better”
“And your feelings are…?”
“Unrequited, I'm afraid” He smiled sadly at you as you came to stand in front of him “I don’t know how to make her notice me as something more”
“Maybe she already knows,” You said, looking at the tiles and letting your fingers grace over a few of them “You know I got that song in a sing-a-gram today, the OG version”
Ashton smiled, trying to mask his tone as he asked “Really?”
“Mmhmm, someone might’ve been listening to me talk about how that’s one of my favorite songs. The kids didn’t tell me who it was, though”
“Do you want to know who it was?”
“When they are ready to share it, yes,” You said, looking back at him and finding his eyes already on you. Gaze flickering between your eyes and your lips. You smiled “Would you teach it to me?”
Ashton smiled as he scooted over on the bench, patting the space next to him for you to sit. His hands covered yours and guided you through a dance across the piano, letting the melody say the rest.

My . interest in writing poetry "collaboratios" is well known these day, but my next poem looks at collaboration in a very different context
"Collaboration With the Robots"
Now that robots have "stooped to conquer," it's time to take a stance,
powered by "artificial intelligence" computers promote a poetry "enhance"
Robots have infiltrated literature like a cancer that's proliferating
It seems like more human effort is needed to help stop it spreading
Als are programmed for learning so they'respond to our insatiable demand
but when replacing our human poets , we put own future in their capable hands.
assuming Als are what influence us, will that be for better or worse?
without creativity being in control - they could make writing quite perverse
The robots have taken over our words without compromise it's claimed
our language has been diluted by A.I.'s utilitarian mind
We've lost some of the emotion from our classic poetry let's say.
gente and style are both suffering , at the end of the day.
By automating the beat, inventing new rhythms and rhyme,
we end up with just cacophonies of modernism "sublime"
Everyday computers giving birth to such poetry promotion
produce stuttering pulse and end-game of "teeth-grinding rendition".
Robotic diction dilutes the mystique of "imagery" and "metaphor"
evocative emotion more diminished, word +choice, predictably ...
The dramatic impact of our poetic lines is disappearing from our page
Where are all those old+fashioned poets who ranted and raged?
High speed advances, in this world of machines,
delivers our digital future, if too many of you get too keen,
It's all in the computer:coding and robotic hardware,we find
the new age of machines, you must all wake up and make up your minds?

Speaking of "Examples of Charles Martinet being poorly treated as representative of how voice actors more generally are treated":
Most people were exposed to Martinet's rendition of Mario in Super Mario 64. (It wasn't his first performance in or outside a game, but certainly one of his best known). In the game, Bowser's "voice" was created using various animal noises, along with a human laugh slowed down. The same laugh was also sped up to give the Boos their iconic cackle.
Looking through the sound files, people are basically certain that Nintendo used a specific Sound Effects library for all of Bowser's voice, The General Series 6000 Sound Effects Library.
And they are like 90% sure that the human laugh in question was supplied by Charles Martinet. Which means:
a. To this day, Charles might be unaware that he basically voiced three characters in Super Mario 64 and was compensated by Nintendo for one
and
b. Part of the reason that SAG-AFTRA is striking, to try to prevent studios from being able to digitally scan an actor and use A.I. to put them in productions without further compensation, is already a reality for voice actors.
Old news but I’m still salty about it, it really shows how shabbily voice actors are treated that they got fucking Chris Pratt to voice Mario in the Illumination Mario movie instead of Charles Martinet; who I would argue is basically to Mario as Mel Blanc is to Bugs Bunny.
And it’s not like he doesn’t have range, because you wanna know another one of his major voice acting roles? Paarthurnax from Skyrim.
Yes, the guy who said the line “What is better - to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?” is also the voice of the funny wahoo man.
We really don’t appreciate voice actors enough…

I was fooling around with a.i. generated images today, when I became curious about what it might create as cover art for Jane Austin's Northanger Abby. As you can see, apart from the botched title and authors name, actually gave us a wonderful image with a whole lot to pick apart.
Starting with the abbey, I found it so hilarious that the a.i. tried to make it look as gothic as possible. From its ornate pinnacles to its lancet windows, it truly is a stunning display of gothic architecture. However, as many of you may know, the actual description of Northanger Abby is far from the elegant and elaborate abbey depicted here. Instead in her novel the abbey is described as more "modern" with its "smooth gravel roads," fireplaces of "handsome marble", and almost gothic windows." I believe this is due to the ai recognizing that Northanger Abbey was written in the early 19th century and as a result, tried to make it look as gothic as possible. However, as many of us know, the whole point of Northanger Abbey was supposed to be gothic satire, with Austen poking fun at how many gothic novels utilize a big spooky, gothic abbey as their setting.
The second and final thing I wanted to touch on is the lady presumably talking to the man on the horse. In my opinion, I think this is the a.i.'s best rendition of Catherine and Henry. This is mainly due to the fact that they are front and center, being basked in the beautiful golden light kind of symbolizing the kind and loving relationship shared between the two. However, I would also like to point out the other mounted gentleman standing off to the side in the shadows, who I believe to be John Thorpe. What do you guys think? Is it significant that both the love interests are mounted? What about the shadows, light, and fog that drape the abbey? I would love to hear what you guys have to say!

How to use A.I. to write your essay without getting caught;
It requires more work than creating a prompt, less work than writing it yourself.
Just edit it, dummy.
After you generate your paper; you still need a few more hours of work. You can knock it out in 30minutes if you're good.
First; read the essay. Ensure the information contained within is correct, and verify your reference. if you need a bibliography; write it.
After that; rewrite each paragraph in your own words. Don't worry about the word count yet.
After you've finished putting it in your own words AND that it's accurate; you're essentially guaranteed to be untraceable with A.I. check tools.
*NOW* make sure you're within the word count bounds. Because that's less important for your grade than being caught using A.I.
Don't refill the words lost or gained with the A.I. rendition; instead look for sentences that seem confusing or too long.
If they're confusing; lengthen them with a better explanation. If they're too long; shorten them. Obviously; you only really need to do this to stay within the word counts.
But it can't hurt your grade to clarify your essay as much as possible. Think; are you trying to just make a paper to turn in? Or do you really need the full marks?
E.z.p.z.

Them Awful A.I. Blues...
There’s at least one storyteller in every community, somebody who helps shape the culture of that community by providing a model -- positive or negative -- on what it means to be a member of that community.
While this can mean literally to morals and ethics and rituals of a particular community, more often than not it is a story of a different time, a different place, sometimes factual, sometimes wholly imaginary, sometimes a mixture of both.
And the storyteller may be a poet, a painter, a puppeteer, or a priest. What they do is of more importance than how they do it.
Until fairly recently -- a little less than 600 years compared to the minimum of 200,000 years of human language before that -- storytellers were typically rewarded for their performance, not their creativity.*
They would create stories in the form of poetry and art, a few composing written works but most using oral traditions to pass the stories along.
And with rare exceptions such as dramatists hired to create a play for public performance, none were rewarded for the stories themselves but for their repeated rendition of same.
Bards would hear songs and memorize and adapt them to suit their own tastes. When these tales proved popular enough they became part of a cultural tradition, but typically many variant versions of these stories exist with their deviations often taking on a life of their own.**
In short, the act of creativity held no value in and of itself, but the performance or presentation did.
Johannes Gutenberg changed all that circa 1440 with his printing press.
Once printing hit the scene, the actual created work itself -- or more precisely, copies of the original work -- acquired a value. While there had been some earlier cases of lawsuits brought over unauthorized handwritten copies of religious texts, it wasn’t until works could be literally cranked out by the thousands that literary piracy (including music scores and art prints) deprived creators of rightful income and the first copyright laws were passed in the early 18th century.
For creators, this proved a bountiful era. Cheap printed material meant more people could afford to read for pleasure, creating a market that rewarded creators for new content. A creator of average skill and talent but a good work ethic could make a decent living for themselves by creating works for others to read or perform.
Minor glitches occurred along the way. Inexpensive photocopying made it possible for individuals to copy otherwise hard to obtain material, computers and scanning made copying works almost cost free.
Nonetheless, most professional creators found it possible to either earn a living or supplement a day job by creating new works for the consumer market.
Corporate greed, however, began factoring in.
First in the matter of public domain. Copyright law -- especially in the United States -- granted creators with exclusive control over their creations for a fixed period of time, after which it became public domain and anyone could use it.
The idea was to provide a carrot and stick for creators (including inventors and researchers): The carrot of making money off one’s creativity vs. the stick of needing to constantly create new things to keep up one’s cash flow.
Corporations soon found a bypass to this: Work for hire.
Publishers and producers would hire creators to make something for them that the publisher or producer would own legally as the copyright holder regardless of the input from the actual creator.
This would be used again and again to deny creators profit participation in their own works.
A second problem arose with the expanded use of trademarks.
Historically a trademark was a name and a specific logo that was used to brand a product or service viz Coca-Cola, Shell gasoline, MacDonald’s burgers, etc. The idea was to provide a business protection from others claiming to be them to profit off their brand value.
Unlike copyrights, trademarks need never expire.
What copyrights covered soon expanded beyond just words and logos.
Coca-Cola trademarked their classic bottle design so no one could imitate it. Disney trademarks Every. Damn. Iteration. of their characters in perpetuity to prevent anyone from selling unlicensed products based on old or obscure character variants.***
Copyright is now also being extended to extraordinarily long terms. In the US during most of the 20th century copyright lasted only 28 years with the option of renewing for another 28 for a total of 56 years.
This meant some long lived creators who started young -- Irving Berlin being a prime example -- saw their earliest works enter the public domain in their lifetimes.
Granted, if your output is on par with Irving Berlin’s, you’re not going to miss a handful of your earliest efforts.
But now thanks to Disney’s shill the late Sonny Bono, “copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years. For an anonymous work, a pseudonymous work, or a work made for hire, the copyright endures for a term of 95 years from the year of its first publication or a term of 120 years from the year of its creation, whichever expires first.” [U.S. Copyright Office]
This offers a double whammy on consumers and creators.
While it may seem that locking up a work for a century or so would be in creators’ interest, in reality it actively discourages the creation of new material in favor of keeping the old in circulation.
It prevents new creators from taking ideas from old works and applying them in new ways to contemporary creations.
And it absolutely discourages publishers and producers from seeking new concepts that would undercut the value of the old.
That’s bad enough as is.
AI is just making it worse.
Finally, the challenge of being creative in the digital era above and beyond the problem of AI.
Tech bros crowed that the internet superhighway was be a great tool for democracy insofar as it would eliminate gatekeepers.
The thing about gatekeepers is that they set some sort of entry bar.
Even before AI showed up, the number of books being published -- especially digitally -- skyrocketed.
Without gatekeepers to set minimum levels of competency, the market quickly became awash in unmemorable substandard work.
I mean, there’s always been a lot of unmemorable substandard work in every creative field, but while Ted Sturgeon’s famous observation that “90% of everything is crap” once held true, today I think the number’s more like 99%.
As I’ve posted elsewhere, all humans are satisfied with acceptable mediocrity 80% of the time.
A creative work doesn’t need to be great, just diverting. The bulk of popular entertainment falls into well established genres and tropes. We feel disappointed, perhaps even angered and frustrated if a work touted as belonging in a specific bin doesn’t follow at least some of the conventions of that genre.
Publishers and producers bank on that. It’s like the movie Moneyball; you do better with a team full of reliable double hitters than a team that relies on two or three home run stars.
What AI does is to allow large corporations to produce not just a flood but a veritable tsunami of acceptable mediocrity at virtually no cost.
Here’s the paradox:
When creativity was relatively scarce and performance was the thing, creators got little if anything for the act of creating.
When copies of creative works became plentiful and inexpensive, creators -- and publishers and producers -- did well.
Now that derivative works are ubiquitous and free, creators suffer.
Mediocre hacks who rely on AI to fill in the broad strokes of their favorite genre are already crowding more original 100% human works, reducing the spread of appeal of quality work.
I get it that AI is here, that we’ll be seeing it in a multitude of creative uses.
To be fair, I can see a place for it in generating story prompts, coming up with background walla and sound effects for visual media, providing minor details in art the way old masters employed apprentices to paint the background of their pictures, etc.
But I think we’re entering a time when genuine human creativity and insight will be a rarity.

* Yeah, the Koreans beat Johannes Gutenberg to the punch re movable type printing presses, but one of the drawbacks about being the Hermit Kingdom is that when you do something really cool, nobody finds out about it until centuries later.
** Case in point: The late 18th century English song “The Unfortunate Rake” crossed the Atlantic and found a home in Appalachia, eventually making its way south to New Orleans and west to the frontier. The Western variant is known today as “The Streets Of Laredo” while the New Orleans version is best known as “St. James Infirmary Blues”. Here’s Betty Boop’s take on it.
*** This causes no end of confusion to people who assume because a work containing a trademarked character has slipped out of copyright that the character itself is now part of the public domain. No; while the work itself may now be freely copied and shared, the characters therein are still protected by trademark. This is why you can freely republish and readapt Frank L. Baum’s Wizard Of Oz but the moment you use the MGM movie’s character designs, you can expect to find yourself on the receiving end of a cease and desist lawsuit.

Interactive AI tools in music performance
I would like to discuss how Interactive AI tools could influence every aspect in music industry including live performances.
The link here is how Drake used AI to replicate his younger self in his concert:
The last article here explores the intersection of AI and classical music, shedding light on recent developments that both intrigue and concern composers. The introduction of Ripple, a free-to-use music production app with A.I. features, exemplifies the increasing integration of A.I. tools in musical performance. The piece delves into a live performance where vocalist Jen Wang collaborated with the Realtime Audio Variational autoEncoder (R.A.V.E.), an A.I. algorithm that synthesized her voice during a rendition of Alvin Lucier's "The Duke of York." The article further discusses various A.I.-powered music tools, such as SingSong and MusicLM, as well as concerns regarding bias in A.I. datasets and their potential impact on musical aesthetics.
However, concerns about bias, particularly in publicly-facing technologies, are articulated by composer Tina Tallon and underscore the ethical considerations surrounding A.I. tools. The article also touches upon the geopolitical implications and societal concerns, particularly in relation to hip-hop artistry and issues of co-optation and theft.
This discussion in class reminds me of the GenAI art purchased by MoMA, reflecting the broader trend of art institutions embracing A.I.-generated works. As A.I. continues to influence various artistic domains, the ethical use and creative exploration of these tools pose challenges and opportunities that resonate across different forms of expression, from visual arts to live musical performances.

This spring, Clive Kabatznik, an investor in Florida, called his local Bank of America representative to discuss a big money transfer he was planning to make. Then he called again.
Except the second phone call wasn’t from Mr. Kabatznik. Rather, a software program had artificially generated his voice and tried to trick the banker into moving the money elsewhere.
Mr. Kabatznik and his banker were the targets of a cutting-edge scam attempt that has grabbed the attention of cybersecurity experts: the use of artificial intelligence to generate voice deepfakes, or vocal renditions that mimic real people’s voices.
The problem is still new enough that there is no comprehensive accounting of how often it happens. But one expert whose company, Pindrop, monitors the audio traffic for many of the largest U.S. banks said he had seen a jump in its prevalence this year — and in the sophistication of scammers’ voice fraud attempts. Another large voice authentication vendor, Nuance, saw its first successful deepfake attack on a financial services client late last year.
In Mr. Kabatznik’s case, the fraud was detectable. But the speed of technological development, the falling costs of generative artificial intelligence programs and the wide availability of recordings of people’s voices on the internet have created the perfect conditions for voice-related A.I. scams.

Google's Cutting edge innovation Survey Gathering, a board of leaders that incorporates Jeff Dignitary, the organization's senior VP of examination and man-made brainpower, and Kent Walker, Google's leader of worldwide undertakings and boss legitimate official, met under about fourteen days after ChatGPT appeared to talk about their organization's drives, as per the slide show.
