#donald duck#just wondering#I don't really have difficulty with him???#like I always thought his voice was supposed to be comically odd but not genuinely hard to understand#like in his universe people outside his family can't understand him#but isn't the viewer supposed to feel clever and amused because they CAN understand what Donald says while other characters are confused?#but I'm reading a review of DuckTales speculating that he doesn't play a bigger role in events because of his voice#(I mean DuckTales 2017 where he was ostensibly core cast rather than being packed off to the Navy)#that the writers genuinely didn't think they could expect the audience to understand him#so they largely left him out or didn't give him much dialogue#and I Mean#Donald Duck has been working steadily in film and television for nigh on 90 years#would he really have the career that he has if the majority of viewers couldn't understand him?#he just has like a quack accent#once you get used to it he's easy???#ppl in sailor suits you don't want to pick a fight with: Popeye‚ Donald Duck‚ anyone with a planet in her name (sorry to Steve Harrington)

Inspired Work: Mass Effect 3, assumes Destruction ending
~~~
Noise.
But faint.
And far away.
Noise.
But not.
Are those words?
Bright.
And then gone.
Bright and then gone.
Bright.
Are those people?
“Stay with us, Shepard!”
Everything was so bright.
“Stay with us!”
Aching.
She couldn't move.
Tired.
She wouldn't move.
“Al!”
The bright was farther away.
And then it was closer.
“Run another diagnostic.”
Then it was farther.
Then closer.
“We don't have any more!”
And then…
Then…
Shoulders shaking, everything shaking, and
“We need to go! Now!”
Falling down and everything hurt and
“Get this shuttle moving!”
And everything was fuzzy and faint and falling far away.
Her head was heavy. She opened her eyes to a blurry world. A volus was next to her, tapping away on a data pad. A bed far away had a purple mass on it. People crowded around it.
“Hush,” the volus said to her, “You need your rest, Commander Shepard. And don't worry about your friend. She's being treated with the best care possible.”
She kept staring. She watched the purple as people stood. She watched the purple as people walked. Purple drew her in. But her heavy head wanted rest. Her eyelids fell, but she opened them. They fell, but she opened them. They fell, and she couldn't open them. She was so tired….
Light glared into her eyes. Across her face she rested her arm.
A click sounded and a breath streamed, “Hello.”
Shielding her eyes, she looked to the one who spoke. There was a volus looking at her.
“How are you feeling?” they asked.
She groaned, “Like I've been hit by a truck.” She tried to sit up, but they gently pressed a hand against her chest and she obediently dropped back into the cot.
“You shouldn't move just yet,” they soothed, “Since you are awake, I have a few questions.”
She didn't answer. They hopped off a stool and waddled to a table. Picking up a datapad, they waddled back and proceeded to yank their body up onto the stool. They adjusted.
“Now, it's alright if you don't know the answers. Let's begin,” they said, “What is your name?”
“Alys,” she said, “Alys Shepard.”
They tapped away on the datapad. They asked about her sex and her species. They asked her to describe her physical appearance. She remembered her freckled white skin, her smoky grey eyes, her vibrant red hair, her tall stature. They asked about her birthplace and date of birth. She remembered the city on Earth, tall towers spiraling next to old, squat buildings.They asked about her career. She remembered joining the Alliance as soon as she could. She remembered Akuze. She remembered joining the SPECTRES to pursue Saren and how he committed suicide, how the Reapers had enslaved the geth, how she had the ordered conserving the Alliance firepower during the attack on the Citadel. She remembered suffocating and waking up with The Illusive Man as her “project manager”. She remembered the Collectors. She remembered the time she spent in custody on Earth. She remembered how Mordin die without a single regret, how Wrex and Bakara stood in triumph, how Tali and the Geth Prime looked each other in the eye with solidarity.
Once she had briefly recounted everything, she was given a small silicone bag full of water. She twisted the top open and drank. The volus kept tapping on the datapad as she closed the pouch and left it on her lap. She asked, “Where am I?”
“You're in a secure bunker on the planet Earth,” they responded. She repeated her question insistently. They said, “I honestly don't know. I'm an anatomist, not a geographer.”
Fiction ask meme:
You know I want to pester you about Deluge, but I won't. I'll ask about House Victorian Interlude. What was the inspiration behind that? Did you have to do research? Do you have a favorite line/part?
Thanks!
House Victorian Interlude! There's a blast from the past. Going back 14 years...this is a 3-part House/Wilson Victorian era AU, written in 2008-2009. The individual fics are:
Towards An Understanding of the Catabolic Nature of the Human Male (9464 words, Explicit) Even in the Victorian age, it was all about sex.
Ardor Resolutus (2700 words, Explicit) What happened after Wilson appeared on House's doorstep in "Towards an Understanding of the Catabolic Nature of the Human Male."
On the Commission of Unnatural Offenses (9351 words, Explicit) Wilson sadly came to learn, all the heated evenings, all those months sleeping in House's bed, would still leave him woefully unprepared for the most unusual, and disturbing, proposition the man had ever let loose upon him.
What was the inspiration behind that?
Crack. It was all crack. I'd known about the Victorian era diagnosis of "feminine hysteria" for awhile, and the "treatment" for it, but didn't know what to do with it. Until one day in mid-August 2008, I was in kind of a hyper mood, and I thought it'd be fun to write Victorian era House/Wilson. That's all. Oddly, no one else I knew of had done that before (which I thought strange, House MD was a loose adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed a perfect setting for an AU). I made Wilson a newly-arrived specialist in female disorders, who makes his acquaintance with House, a brilliant but misanthropic doctor and professor of medical philosophy at Princeton. I wrote it in 10 days, 2 lovely people beta'ed it, and "Towards An Understanding..." was posted to LJ end of August.
I never intended to continue the AU, but in late December 2008 I decided I wanted to break 60k words of fic posted for the year. Iirc "Ardor Resolutus" was the original ending for "Towards An Understanding..." but I cut it from the initial draft before I sent it to beta because the fic felt too long otherwise. (It's been 14 years, memory is fuzzy and I didn't take detailed notes at all.) In 2 days I fleshed out what I cut, took 2 more days for beta, and I posted it to LJ just in time to meet my 60k goal for 2008.
I started "On the Commission..." right after posting "Ardor Resolutus". Like "Ardor Resolutus" it rose from paragraphs cut from "Towards An Understanding…". I had 5000 words for it by mid-Jan 2009, but then ended up picking at it over the next 3 months. It was finished in late April, then beta'ed and posted to LJ by the end of April.
Did you have to do research?
I sure did. I had to adapt the circumstances of House and Wilson's meeting, of course, and the source of House's leg injury (falling off a horse); the entire theory of the "catabolic" male vs the "anabolic" female re sex, which House was keen on disproving; and Victorian male fashion, where men were considered immodestly undressed if they didn't wear cravats and vests/waistcoats. (Not to mention the "spermatorrhea" bit for entirely normal wet dreams. The entire Victorian attitude towards sex was seriously more an eye-opener than I expected.) I also wanted to include enough setting details that the story felt grounded in the era and believable. If I'm going to write crack, I'm going all in.
Do you have a favorite line/part?
I like the scene in "Towards An Understanding..." where House explains his theory to Wilson; and the end of "On The Commission..." where House subverts Wilson's expectation of being outed (and arrested).
Thank you for letting me take the trip down memory lane, Phoenix! And you can ask about "Deluge" if you want, I don't mind.
have any tumblr tmg fans seen the sanguinare speculation? i’ve seen discussion on the subreddit - apparently there were postcards given out at the merch table last night with a qr code leading to this website (front of the postcard was the image from the website). folks on the subreddit are thinking it might be a surprise album drop, especially considering how long it’s been since they last released new music & the original plan for dark in here.
rewatching s3 e1 of leverage is like. top ten pictures taken moments before a disaster (eliot realizing he hasn't escaped moreau's influence over his life and that from here on out he will be living with either the inevitability of the team finding out about his past or the reality of them having found out). rewatching the rest of season 3 is like watching him be put through a slow motion hydraulic press. it's soooooooooooooooo
listen. i always liked werewolves more than vampires, and that’s because i just never really got the appeal of vampires - i was like, vampire-neutral. happy they existed because i know how much my friends love them. so i’m fairly certain the absolute first thing i said when i surfaced from reading @thebibliosphere‘s hunger pangs: true love bites is “i get it about vampires now.”
i absolutely did not go into reading expecting to adore vlad as much as i do, but oh my god, is this what enjoying vampires has been like for the rest of you this entire time????? why did nobody tell me! seriously!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i cannot recommend reading this enough, i’m never going to shut up about how much i love this book, & yes, that’s fully with the intent of being a fandom pied piper & dragging you all into this interest with me.
i see a post talking doom and gloom about how we'll never escape toxic masculinity. i think about back in 2017 when american girl released their first boy doll, and a review for him went viral in the collecting community. the review was written by a mom, who said they went into the store to get their daughter a doll, only to see their son's eyes light up like fire when he saw a doll that looked like him, and now every night he puts his doll in pajamas and rocks him to sleep. i think about the toddler in my daycare room a few years back who was obsessed with baby dolls, carrying them everywhere, and his mom proudly told us he uses his sisters' old baby dolls and wants to be just like them. that toddler saw another toddler crying one day and gave her the doll he had to cheer her up. i think about the eight-year-old boy i saw a few years back, excitedly waving around raya's sword in a target checkout line like all his dreams were coming true. there was a video on my instagram the other day of a little boy at disneyworld crying with joy upon meeting his hero, mulan. i think about the voice actor for bow in the she-ra reboot saying his nephews only wanted adora action figures. celebrity men are wearing dresses on tv now. last halloween i saw a little boy dressed as elsa. i went to go see spiderverse over the summer, and in the line ahead of me was a boy who couldn't be older than twelve or thirteen, bouncing and beaming, giddy with excitement over getting to see the female-led romance movie elemental. i think about the five-year-old boy at my library who breathlessly asked me where the pinkalicious books were, eyes widening when i had more on my cart, his mom explaining that he is all about pinkalicious and fancy nancy. i saw so many pictures online of boys and men dressed in pink to see barbie. teenage boys are gonna open their phones and see the man who wrote fucking game of thrones dressed in pink to see barbie. when i was a kid, a boy dressing in pink was practically a social death sentence. there are boys running around in pink on my street right now.
A Review of Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine by Gail Honeyman from someone with an extreme aversion to secondhand embarrassment.
Rating: 60/100
Summary: If I had known this book would make me cringe so much, I probably wouldn't have picked it up. This review will be short because I don't have a lot to articulate about this book. It was very slow, with a lot of daily life stuff. I enjoyed the last hundred pages a lot more than the first two hundred pages. It had a plotline throughout the first part that made me cringe, and had me on edge waiting for something that would make me feel awful happen for most of it. The prose was decent and Eleanor was a unique character with a unique voice, but I can't say that it was fun to read at all, since I spent so much of it telling myself that I should read another chapter and get closer to the end of the book so I could read something else. On objective merits, it's a much better book that my read from yesterday, Good Neighbors, but on "amount I enjoyed it", Good Neighbors was by far better.
Final Verdict: If you cringe when TV show characters do something stupid, don't read this book.
Review Word Count: 192
they have a point though. you wouldn't need everyone to accommodate you if you just lost weight, but you're too lazy to stick to a healthy diet and exercise. it's that simple. I'd like to see you back up your claims, but you have no proof. you have got to stop lying to yourselves and face the facts
Must I go through this again? Fine. FINE. You guys are working my nerves today. You want to talk about facing the facts? Let's face the fucking facts.
In 2022, the US market cap of the weight loss industry was $75 billion [1, 3]. In 2021, the global market cap of the weight loss industry was estimated at $224.27 billion [2].
In 2020, the market shrunk by about 25%, but rebounded and then some since then [1, 3] By 2030, the global weight loss industry is expected to be valued at $405.4 billion [2]. If diets really worked, this industry would fall overnight.
Over 50 years of research conclusively demonstrates that virtually everyone who intentionally loses weight by manipulating their eating and exercise habits will regain the weight they lost within 3-5 years. And 75% will actually regain more weight than they lost [4].
Doctors became so desperate that they resorted to amputating parts of the digestive tract (bariatric surgery) in the hopes that it might finally result in long-term weight-loss. Except that doesn’t work either. [6] And it turns out it causes death [7], addiction [8], malnutrition [9], and suicide [7].
“Obesity” has no proven causative role in the onset of any chronic condition [13, 14] and its appearance may be a protective response to the onset of numerous chronic conditions generated from currently unknown causes [15, 16, 17, 18].
Fatness was associated with only 1/3 the associated deaths that previous research estimated and being “overweight” conferred no increased risk at all, and may even be a protective factor against all-causes mortality relative to lower weight categories [19].
Studies have observed that about 30% of so-called “normal weight” people are “unhealthy” whereas about 50% of so-called “overweight” people are “healthy”. Thus, using the BMI as an indicator of health results in the misclassification of some 75 million people in the United States alone [20].
While epidemiologists use BMI to calculate national obesity rates (nearly 35% for adults and 18% for kids), the distinctions can be arbitrary. In 1998, the National Institutes of Health lowered the overweight threshold from 27.8 to 25—branding roughly 29 million Americans as fat overnight—to match international guidelines. But critics noted that those guidelines were drafted in part by the International Obesity Task Force, whose two principal funders were companies making weight loss drugs [21].
this might be one of those things where the world hasn’t changed so much as my exposure to it has, but when did everyone collectively switch to ultra-expensive burr coffee grinders? did they actually? does it just feel like it because of amazon affiliate commissions? did something else prompt it?
#every review of coffee grinders i’ve been able to find in the last two years classifies anything under $100 as a budget option#this feels like a new-ish development in coffee snobbery to me#like i'm from a city famous for coffee snobs and when i left in 2017 this was not a thing
My Writing Year in Review - 2022
I only joined ao3 in July and I've definitely haven't written as much as I've wanted this year, but I figured I'd celebrate the new year with looking back at the writing accomplishments I did manage in 2022. @LibraTheFangirl.
My personal favorite stories posted:
Warm Hands (Stranger Things)
Jonathan’s gaze softens as he uses his free hand to lift up the blanket. Steve blinks at the sight underneath. His chest is almost completely covered in bandages. Yeah. Not good. “Oh.” Jonathan places the blanket back down. His hand gently gracing over Steve’s chest. Jonathan gives him a warm smile. Nancy still looks angry. Steve gives her an uncertain look, and she sighs, “You scared the shit out of us, Steve.” “Sorry.” “It’s fine, just- Don’t do it again,” Jonathan says and Steve smiles. “Not making any promises.” “Of course you won’t,” Nancy scoffs half-heartedly. “Next time, I’ll kill you myself.”
I feel like what I really like about this story is more about the circumstances and what it meant to me than the story itself, if that makes sense. This was not only my first Stranger Things and Stoncy story, but also the main reason I finally got an ao3 and Tumblr account in the first. Mind you, I've wanted to get those for years now, but Stoncy Week 2022 and with it this story was what finally pushed past the anxiety and whatnot. This was also the first time in a really long time I just sat down and actually wrote. This story's signifies my way back to writing.
The Bremin Gang (Nowhere Boys)
“... Still, try finding another four kids in Bremin who could have solved the mystery of why that demon wanted an apple tree.” “We never figured out why it wanted the tree.” “Why do you have to ruin my fun, Jakey?” For a moment the two boys just stared at each other, then Jake sighed. “Okay, I’ll bite. Who’s who?” Glancing over his shoulder at the other two teens, the earth element then added, “Andy’s Velma, right?” “Of course!” Sam agreed. “And you’re Fred, except instead of traps you think brute force is the answer to everything. Your method is about as successful as his traps.”
This technically wasn't written in 2022, but it was posted then, so it still counts. I mostly just write Hurt/Comfort and Whump, so I take a little extra pride whenever I manage some more lighthearted/humor-esque. This is also something I've wanted to share for a while. And who doesn't love a good Scooby-Doo comparison? 😂
New year writing resolutions and plans for 2023:
Writing more regularly for the sake of writing and my own enjoyment.
Participate in Febuwhump and Whumptober.
Complete at least SOME of my too-many-to-count WIPS 😂
Cross-posting my FF-stories on a03? (Not without spell-checking though, my god, my old works have som brutal errors 😂)
WIPs I'm most excited about (so many but here's a selected few):
Tarlos Timer AU (9-1-1: Lone Star; current word count: 1k+ words)
Carlos had grieved for a man he’d never know for a few months when TK Strand came crashing into his life.
This is one of my WIPs i'm most excited AND most frustrated with (the writing just isn't coming along as I wish it was). It's a Tarlos soulmate AU where everyone's born with a timer on their wrist, representing their soulmate's (remaining) life. The story takes off at the beginning of the show (and probably will include a somewhat rewriting/changing of season 1) when Carlos is faced with the sudden horror of the timer on his wrist hitting zero, signifying the death of his soulmate. Everything just gets more angsty and chaotic after that as the Strands arrive in Austin. (Read a sneak peek from chapter 1 here!)
Meliodas Tortured in Hell Three-Shot (Nanatsu no Taizai/ The Seven Deadly Sins; current word count: 700+ words)
“Oh…” Meliodas’ gaze finally finds his. “An illusion.” King’s blood runs cold at the statement. “Captain, no. I-”
Originally planned for Whumptober 2022's prompts: "No one's coming" + "Are you here to break me out?" + Carried to Safety + Tears. A non-canon compliant story where Meliodas, shortly after the Sins find out he's a demon, is taken to Hell on order by his father. There's lot of angst and whump, from both Meliodas and the Sins part, some torture, as well as King being forced to confront his feelings regarding Meliodas (a classic trope in my 7DS WIPs).
The Curious Case of Stoncy (Stranger Things; current word count: 200+ words)
It all started for once not with Dustin, but with Will and Mike. Of course, the real start had happened between Steve and Nancy and Jonathan and a quiet house months prior. But the kids didn’t know any of that. So, for the kids it all started with Will and Mike and a broken lamp.
Originally planned for Stoncy Week 2022 Day 7: Secret Relationship. To sum it up: Jonathan, Steve and Nancy are dating, but nobody knows. The kids don't get their relationship, especially since Jonathan and Steve apparently "can't be friends" yet are suddenly hanging out together. This all leads to the them launching a whole investigation. Things get as chaotic as you might think with that.
When the Spell Breaks (Nanatsu no Taizai; current word count: <100 words)
It was a startling realization for a king to make, but while the Seven Deadly Sins had always served him, their loyalties had never been his to claim.
Okay, not sure if this even counts as a proper WIP because this sentence is all I have so far. But this is one of the two 7DS AUs I'm most excited about (the other I wanna develop a bit more before sharing though). Basically, it's an AU where the Sins were never framed. Somewhere along the years, the Sins found out about Meliodas being a demon and agreed to keep it within the group. Then some Stuff™ happens and the secret is spilled. The kingdom reacts badly and the Sins are like screw that. They pretty much chooses Meliodas over the kingdom and willingly becomes fugitives of Liones to protect their captain. Then it goes from there.
Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars - Uptown Funk 2014
"Uptown Funk" is a song by British record producer Mark Ronson featuring American singer Bruno Mars. It was released on 10 November 2014, as the lead single from Ronson's fourth studio album, Uptown Special (2015). "Uptown Funk" was written by Ronson, Mars, Jeff Bhasker, and Philip Lawrence; it was produced by the aforementioned first three. The song began during a freestyle studio session while they worked on a jam Mars and his band had been playing on tour. Copyright controversies arose after the song's release resulting in multiple lawsuits and amendments to its songwriting credits. The song is a funk-pop, soul, boogie, disco-pop, and Minneapolis sound track. It has a spirit akin to the 1980s-era funk music. Its lyrics address fashion, self-love and "traditional masculine bravado", performed in a sing-rapping style filled with metaphors, arrogance, charisma, and fun. Upon its release, the single received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the instrumental, style and influences of the track. Others criticized it for not being innovative as it tried to emulate 1980s funk music.
"Uptown Funk" topped the charts of 19 countries and reached the top 10 of 15 others, making it the most successful single of Ronson and Mars to date. In the US, "Uptown Funk" topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 consecutive weeks and spent seven weeks on the top of the UK Singles Chart. It was certified 11 times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and six times platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). The song spent 11 weeks in the number one position in France, 6 weeks as number one in Australia, and 9 consecutive weeks as number one in New Zealand. It also broke its own streaming record three times in the UK, while breaking the streaming record in the US and Worldwide at that time. As of January 2023, the official music video for "Uptown Funk" was the ninth most viewed Youtube video of all-time, having received over 5.2 billion views.
In 2015, the song won British Single of the Year at the Brit Awards, Best Pop at MelOn Music Awards and was one of the Top 10 Gold International Gold Songs at RTHK International Pop Poll Awards. The track also won BMI Pop Song of the Year at the BMI Awards, Song of the Year at Telehit Awards and Song of the Year at Soul Train Music Awards. In 2016, "Uptown Funk" received Grammy awards for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 58th Grammy Awards. It also won International Work of the Year at the APRA Music Awards, Best Collaboration at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, while it was nominated for Song of the Year. "Uptown Funk " was inducted to the 2017 edition of the Guinness World Records for achieving the most weeks at number one on Billboard's Digital Song Sales chart. In 2017, the track was one of the winners of Most Performed Songs at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards. "Uptown Funk" is the fifth biggest song of all-time to have charted on the Billboard Hot 100.
"Uptown Funk" received a total of 84,5% yes votes!
