David Jude Jolicoeur (September 21, 1968 – February 12, 2023), better known under Trugoy the Dove, was a rapper, producer, and a third of my favorite rap group, De La Soul. He often rapped along with Damon Albarn and De La Soul and collaborated with Gorillaz and other groups. The group has a different rapper, DDave'splace, whenever they perform, but he can never be replaced. I'm glad I could see/hear him talk with Gorillaz about this time last year. I know it wasn't just De La Soul, but it will have to do. Dave was a strong rapper with excellent lyrical work that added to De LLSoul'sdynamic.

RIP Trugoy The Dove, De La Soul co-founder/rapper 🙏🏾
I found out this news late af but I’m not gonna lie this one hit me HARD. 😢
Back in high school, De La Soul was everything I aspired to. They are the rap group that made me want to seriously do music.
Their crazy ass rhymes and daring use of sampling Old School classic records and turning them into a whole new sound (big up their producer on the first album, DJ Prince Paul) just blew my teenaged mind at the same. I had loved Run-DMC, Boogie Down Productions, UTFO, Doug E Fresh, Slick Rick etc before they came along but once I heard their debut single “Plug Tuning” they became the nee standard that I aspired to.
youtube
Right after my high school best friend Anton Lewis heard that sontg, he immediately renamed himself the rapper A Le Wiz and I became MC Number One lol (tbh I first used the name MC EZ Rock but then Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock came out with “It Takes Two” so I had to change it lol).
Then we got our hands on De La Soul’s debut album “3 Feet High And Rising” and became even more obsessed with their super intelligent and poetic rhyme style that didn’t focus on sounding “tough” or “street”.
youtube
Songs like “Potholes In My Lawn”, “The Magic Nunber” and “Buddy” featuring The Jungle Bros, Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah and even more.
youtube
And then their mosnter jam “Me Myself And I” became THE JAM of summer 1989 and literally everyone worldwide knew and loved De La Soul which made me super happy and proud. 😊
youtube
Thank you Posdnous, Trugoy The Dove and DJ Pace Master Mase for so many years of great music and even greater memories over the years to the soundtrack of later hits like “Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)”, “A Rollerskating Jam Called ‘Saturdays’”.
youtube
Not to mention Trugoy The Dove’s awesome feature on the hook of A Tribe Called Quest’s classic, “Award Tour”. 🙌🏾 (RIP to my all time fave Trini rapper Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest, who passed away back in 2016🕊️)
youtube
Rest In Power to the icon, David Jude Jolicoeur AKA Trugoy The Dove. Thanks for everything. De La Soul forever! 🙏🏾
