After seeing that shitty frenchamerican movie about mexicans without mexicans in the main cast winning so many awards im glad Brazil winned this! I dont even care about oscar, this is HUGE!!!!
"I'm still here" isnt just a random film. It is about the military dictatorship, which on the contrary of countries like Argentina and Chile, Brazil didnt punished most part of the people that did and colaborated for all the deaths, crimes and opressions, and many families still and probably wont ever know where their family members were "buried/disposed".
And not only historic value and resistance against military coups (which are a constant threat with the rise of extreme right in Brazilian politics and military), this is a win for the lack of support and acknowledgement brazilian cinema has, by our own government and by gringos, that keep on pretending the world is just hollywood and some few european countries
My position is that gringo awards arent the reason we make films. But it does help a lot. It attracts investment, international film companies, something continents like latin america doesnt have compared to japan, korea, china, india and european countries own independent film and shows productions, so much they even have prestigious relevant cinema and tv show awards season.

Cihuacōātl was one of a number of motherhood and fertility goddesses in Aztec mythology. She was sometimes known as Quilaztli. Cihuacōātl was especially associated with midwives, and with the sweat lodges where midwives practiced. She is paired with Quilaztli and was considered a protectress of the Chalmeca people and patroness of the city of Culhuacan. She helped Quetzalcoatl create the current race of humanity by grinding up bones from the previous ages, and mixing it with his blood. She is also the mother of Mixcoatl, whom she abandoned at a crossroads. Tradition says that she often returns there to weep for her lost son, only to find a sacrificial knife.
Tupã is considered to be the creator of the universe, of humanity and of the spirits of good and evil in Guarani mythology referred to as Angatupyry and Tau respectively. Tupã is more specifically considered the creator of light and his residence is the Sun. Tupã was not actually a god, but rather a manifestation of God, in the form of thunder. Tupã, according to Câmara Cascudo, is an adaptation of catechism, which also existed in concept for the Amerindians, but as the "sound of thunder" (tu-pá or tu-pã), an unknown (and thus feared) phenomenon. Phil: [Reading chat] "Have you ever tried any Mexican snacks? Like a gansito?" I tried a bunch of Mexican snacks in Brazil because Roier brought like a fckin' duffel bag, like an actual drug dealer, full of snacks. And I can't remember all of them, but they were incredible. [Laughs]
Phil: He fckin' just brought an actual duffel bag just– [Sound effect of setting down something heavy] on the table at Cellbit's place, and we all just dug in. He like, picked them all out one by one and was like, "This is this, this is that," and I was like, "Holy fcking sht dude. Oh my god." Kind of- kind of busted. Kinda crazy. Very nice. I liked pretty much everything I ate.

I don’t blame the FIA for not giving Charles a punishment for the swearing last week because if mans said I’m sorry and smiled at me with that face and those dimples I’d just give him the first place trophy I’m ngl

its stupid that almost all of the beta kids live in the US. jade doesnt but her grandpa is from the US i believe? how is it that theres a handful of kids fated to save the universe or whatever and theyre ALLL american. it would make way more sense if they were scattered all over the globe.
so far i see dave as still living in texas because he very much feels like a product of the american public school system and american individualism. jade also still lives on her island thats fine her gpa is just polynesian to me, and then john lives in hong kong and rose lives in brazil.
rose specifically lives in the southern high planes of brazil bc thats where it snows and for some reason rose living in a snowy location feels important to her upbringing to me? maybe just because of the flashbacks to her playing in the snow. oh also because it makes sense if she lives in a more isolated location.
i think grandpa harley is maori and was originally born in new zealand wow oh my god as im typing this im imagining jade w a kiwi accent and that feels so fitting. anyways i think he sailed out from NZ and found hellmurder island out in the pacific on his travels.
i also like the idea of rose and dave meeting online and dave is fluent in spanish (bro is irish american/mexican) and in english while rose is fluent in portuguese and knows some english. they communicate through spanglish and portuganglish(???)and rose gets better ar conversational english this way. once she starts getting the hang of it (which is very fast) she starts reading more and more english books and quickly accumulates a far bigger vocabulary than dave because dave does not fucking read books like that.
when they talk mainly spanish and portuguese in the beginning dave is like “portuguese speakers sound like theyre trying to speak spanish while having a stroke you’re giving me a headache” and rose is like “sounds like a you problem i understand your spanish just fine” lol.
dave has a weird assortment of spanish vocab that he knows outside of the basics because his only exposure to spanish is from his bro and shitty public school spanish classes.
also bro was raised on dragon ball z and thats part of the reason he styles his hair the way he does. bro has the goku jesus mexican flag hanging in their living room.

Mclaren with the “papaya rule” swapping positions with the very questionable vsc timing but guess which team didn’t swap positions to give the driver who was ahead in the drivers championship points to take the lead during the race🤡

Huītzilōpōchtli is the solar and war deity of sacrifice in Aztec religion. He was also the patron god of the Aztecs and their capital city, Tenochtitlan. He wielded Xiuhcoatl, the fire serpent, as a weapon, thus also associating Huitzilopochtli with fire. One origin story for him has him as one of four sibings, children of the creator couple Tōnacātēcuhtli and Tōnacācihuātl. His mother and father instructed him and his brother Quetzalcoatl to bring order to the world. Together, Huitzilopochtli and Quetzalcoatl created fire, the first male and female humans, the Earth, and the Sun.
Boitatá is the Brazilian equivalent of the will-o'-the-wisp. The name comes from the Old Tupi language and means "fiery serpent" (mboî tatá). Its great fiery eyes leave it almost blind by day, but by night, it can see everything. According to legend, Boi-tatá was a big serpent which survived a great deluge. A "boiguaçu" (cave anaconda) left its cave after the deluge and, in the dark, went through the fields preying on the animals and corpses, eating exclusively its favourite morsel, the eyes. The collected light from the eaten eyes gave boitatá its fiery gaze. [image credit]

Brazil, Mexico are most vulnerable to Trump in Latin America, Citi says
Analysts highlight Brazil’s trade deficit with U.S. and Lula’s leftist government in report
Tumblr media
Brazil is the most vulnerable country in South America to the economic and political impact of Donald Trump’s new administration in the U.S., according to economists from Citi in a report on expectations surrounding the Republican’s second term. Analysts suggest that within Latin America, Brazil is only less vulnerable than Mexico to President Trump’s policies. Although the region has traditionally been of little importance among American government priorities, “this time is different,” they noted.
“Notably, Brazil ranked higher than expected on Citi’s vulnerability index due to its bilateral trade deficit with the U.S. and Lula’s leftist government,” the report states. According to the bank, the vulnerability index is based on objective measures rather than subjective opinions. Among Latin American countries, Mexico has the highest exposure, followed by Brazil, Honduras, Colombia, and Peru. “Many of Trump’s policy concerns affect Latin America in one way or another. Similar to his first term, Mexico appears most exposed to Trump’s political agenda, but Brazil may also be vulnerable.”
Citi believes that the ideological composition of Latin American governments and the popularity of their leaders might pose challenges in navigating a new Trump administration—expected to be more active and ideological. “Regarding popularity, it would be expected that weaker leftist governments would be more exposed to a more antagonistic U.S. stance. In a chart depicting the popularity and ideology of countries in the region, Lula is defined as center-left with almost zero approval.”
Countries with greater bilateral trade and trade surpluses with China are more concerning from the U.S. perspective. “Besides trade, we also observe the amount of Chinese investments in Latin American countries,” Citi states. In 2023, Brazil had the largest trade surplus with China, according to data cited by the bank.
