A Bullet for Sandoval (1969) [VCI Blu-ray review]
A Bullet for Sandoval stands out as an unsung gem in the wave of revisionist westerns emerging around 1967. Starring Ernest Borgnine at the height of his gruff powers, this dusty tale of revenge and morality offered a bold counterpoint to the romanticized western myths of decades past. Led by Borgnine’s complex anti-hero, A Bullet for Sandoval provides a gripping exploration of violence begetting…

Unlike the other gaming related comic books that often double as a manual, this one was a special extra for people who pre-ordered.
I can't find a version of it online but in the previous HG-101 link they have the pre-coloured pages the artist (Gerado Sandoval) did for the comic.

Comics this week?
Action Comics #1057 - If this is the last arc for both the way I suspect I'm going to miss Sandoval just as much as PKJ. Like Sampere and Federeci he's an artist who could be a generational Superman creator but may be getting snatched away too soon. This issue is mainly just an interview between Clark and Norah, and in the hands of a lesser artist it would just be boring talking heads. Sandoval's portrayal of Clark using his powers to detect whether Norah is lying during the interview keeps the tension high, loved how he depicted Clark's x-ray vision and superhearing. Pretty obvious that Norah is an infiltrator sent by the Empire of Shadows (the evil Dark Multiverse Batfamily from the Batman/Superman & the Authority one shot that PKJ did). If this is the ending arc for PKJ, the Superfamily vs. the Evil Batfamily is a great idea for an ending.
Flash #1 - Good first issue, sets up an interesting Speed Force plot even though I've felt worn out on the Speed Force. Been out of the loop with Flash for a while and this did a good job of getting me up to speed (heh). Dedato art isn't a great fit with a speedster - conveying motion is something he's bad at - but it does suit the grim tone. Spurrier is a writer who loves to pack his issues with as much words as he can, which has the upside of making the issue take longer to read. Seems the comic industry is switching back to compression after two decades plus with everyone trying to ape the Bendis decompressed style. It's a welcome change because if you're going to charge me $5 an issue, it damn well better take me longer than 5 minutes to read.
Detective Comics #1074 - Probably my favorite issue of the run thus far, Nguyen is a treasure. Watters needs his own Ten-Eyed Man mini.
The Penguin #2 - The lesser King work with WW on the stands but still good!
Unstoppable Doom Patrol #6 - Burnham draws the hell out of the fight scenes and it was great to see old Morrison characters like Quiz. Kinda the perfect counter to Jane having every superpower ever just doled out to different identities.
Blade #3 - Slows down a bit but the Adana is such a cool bad guy and I'm loving the buildup to Blade's fight. Plus Blade keeps being the coolest motherfucker in the MU.
Immortal Thor #2 - Not feeling the new Loki design and Ewing is struggling with writing fight scenes as always, but man is that art gorgeous otherwise. Thought bubbles are such a perfect choice here because they are the equivalent of Shakespearean English for comics in terms of conveying "this is old school storytelling". Compliments Ewing trying to write a Thor run in the vein of the actual myths.
Avengers #5 - At this point it's a solid run, but not as great as his Strange book. Need to cut back so I'm dropping this.
Ultimate Invasion #4 - Oh boy do I have thoughts! So many I need to bullet point them!
Hickman has flipped the plot from Ultimates 2. Here the 6160 Ultimates are positioned like the 1610 Liberators in that they are going to be fighting to destroy the status quo, with Capitan America presumably leading the charge. Or maybe it will be Black Panther as the leader since he presumably will be housing the Ultimates in the one place not under the Illuminati's control: Wakanda.
Nothing gets erased via time travel which surprised me. For better or worse, this is what the new Ultimate Universe will be. No traditional take on Ultimate Fantastic Four ever since Ben, Sue, and Johnny are all dead and Reed is a good version of Doom. Reed will be on the Ultimates because Hickman can't leave his boy on the sidelines for long. Clearly Hickman will be writing Ultimates since I can't imagine anyone else wanting to write that kind of lineup with this weird a status quo. What the hell an Ultimate X-Men book is going to look like is anyone's guess.
Hickman has three big plotlines seeded here: The Illuminati carving up America and the Ultimates fighting back. The Maker, Kang, and Howard all trapped in the City which is sealed now but will open again one day. Tony Stark is "Iron Lad" which is meant to make us believe he is also Ultimate Kang, whether that's a red herring or a destiny Tony must face one day remains to be seen.
Other big plot thread is that one day the 616 Illuminati are going to make their way to 6160, likely with the help of Miles and that card Maker gave him.
No tease for Spider-Man, maybe that will come with the Ultimate Universe one shot. Either it's going to be Peter Parker because Marvel demands at least one relatively "normal" book to serve as anchor for all this weirdness, or it will be someone entirely new. Saw someone suggest Harry Osborn and fuck that actually could work! I don't think that's ever been done either. My guess is that USM will be a book about either Peter or Harry having been groomed to join the technocrats in ruling the world, but they end up rebelling against that. Most of Spidey's traditional foes are either mad scientists (Norman and Otto would easily fit into this as sub-bosses under Howard who are pissed because the Illuminati stripped them of their old privileges) or science experiments lashing out (Lizard for example).
I see what Hickman is going for here. In our world the techbros wield power equivalent to heads of state, Hickman just flat out made them the actual heads.
It's an interesting setup, but it's weird. I dunno if Marvel fans will get on board with this, it's so utterly at odds with well, everything. It's not 616, it's not the MCU, and it's not 1610. Everything here is taking full advantage of being an alternate universe, and I don't know how Marvel fans will react to that. Another problem is this Ultimate Universe already carries a lot of baggage. Don't know who the Maker is? You're going to be utterly lost with what the hell is going on. Original Ultimate Universe lasted as long as it did because it was easy to get into for newcomers and featured streamlined reimagining of the classic characters for oldheads. Hickman said his new UU would be an inversion of that and he didn't lie.
I'm concerned that approach is going to make this new Ultimate Universe short lived. Say you're one of the countless people who will presumably jump in on Hickman writing Spidey without having read all this beforehand. If Spider-Man is as changed as Iron Man or Reed are, that's going to be a turn off for people because they'll reject how different he is from what they expect.

Disturbingly, AMLO and Defense Secretary Sandoval revealed that many seized high-caliber weapons (including armor-piercing .50 caliber rounds) come from U.S. manufacturers. One such bullet killed a Mexican soldier this year.

Idiot (Affectionate) ~ A Bad Samaritan Fic
CHAPTER 11: A NEW BEGINNING
Pairing: Derek Sandoval x Reader Word Count: 3094 Rating: T - discussion of injury, canon typical language, angst, discussion of trauma A/N: Here it is: the final chapter, released on the one year anniversary of the beginning. It’s been a wild ride, and I want to say thank you so much to the people that have encouraged me and stuck with me the entire way. I love you, and I wouldn’t have gotten here without you. Don’t worry though, I’m not going to stop writing for them
Previous Chapter | Masterlist
After he woke up, it didn’t take long to determine that Derek had been extremely lucky. The bullet had managed to miss all of the most critical parts of his brain, the ones that affect organ function and basic movement, simple cognition, personality, even most of his long-term memory. You knew that didn’t mean that he was out of the woods, or that problems with those were guaranteed not to manifest as the years went on, but it was certainly a start that you were okay with. He was still himself, and that was really all that mattered.
Not long after that, began the arduous process of recovery. The first step was in the hospital, where the last remaining physical injuries were addressed, and the most basic side effects of treatment, the time spent on feeding tubes (and even earlier, ventilators) and laying unmoving in a hospital bed. He met with specialists and therapists and so many people came in and out that it was impossible to track. Then he moved to a long-term rehab facility for more recovery, for the combination of physical therapy and experimentation to find his new limits, and psychiatric care. And now finally, he was at the final step: going home.
“Derek? What's wrong man?” Sean asked, still waiting to offer his best friend a shoulder to lean on, literally for once, if he needed it.
“I can't leave,” he mumbled in answer, staring down at the floor.
The physical therapy had been intense, but had gotten Derek functional enough for discharge and referral to more out-patient services. Especially with Sean's help, he shouldn't be talking about the act of walking out of the rehab center. And you thought he'd be grateful to see an end to the drab gray-tinted walls, which were only a small step up from the hospital’s horrid beige. But you all had your struggles to move past recent events, and maybe, you thought, he was hesitant to leave behind what had become familiar and felt safe over the past few months.
“What are you talking about? Everything's set,” Sean's eyebrows knitted in confusion. “Thought you'd be racing to get out of here.”
“I got nowhere to go. I can't go back t'...my parents died in that house. I should have. I don't ever want to see it again.”
Sean glanced over at you guiltily. A frown tugged at your lips.
You felt your heart sink. Of course that was weighing on him. You had been so focused on getting him out, on returning to normal as if that would make everything magically better. You even paid out of your meager savings to have the building cleaned and repaired as best as could be done. But now that he said it, it seemed so obvious that that was a bullshit idea. Normal was lost, and that house was permanently haunted, or maybe cursed. None of you could go back, not really.
“Shit, I...didn’t think of that,” Sean mumbled, tugging at his curls. “I don’t really have room at my place but maybe Isobel--”
Derek was already shaking his head, cutting him off. “No way man. She’s already had to do enough taking care of me, when I’m supposed to be the one looking out for her. Besides, I don’t wanna crash with my little sister and her boyfriend. I’ll just find–”
“Don’t be stupid,” you interrupted with a shrug as both of them turned to look at you. “Obviously, you’ll come stay with me. It’s not like you don’t already have a toothbrush, or a drawer full of shit you left behind all the time anyway.”
Sean turned bright red, and you rolled your eyes.
“You sure you wouldn’t mind it?” Derek asked hesitantly. “I don’t–”
“If you are about to call yourself a burden, I will punch you. I have been by your side through all of this by choice. Besides, when have I ever offered something I didn’t want to do?”
“But–”
“Oh no, the horror. I have to share a small, intimate living space with my boyfriend. Pure torture. What ever will I do?” your voice dripped with pure sarcasm.
“Before he actually suggests what you should do,” Sean cut in with a pointed look. “Is that what’s happening?”
Derek looked at you for a long moment, face soft and thoughtful. You smiled back, heart racing for some reason, and hoped that your expression was more reassuring than you felt.
“Okay,” he said finally. “At least for now. Let’s just get outta here.”
You picked up the small duffle bag of clothes and personal items that had accumulated over his stay. “Great. Lunch at Nino’s first?”
“I don’t think he’ll forgive me if I say no,” Derek answered.
“Not me,” Sean added. “I can get you there, but I…have to meet someone later. And don’t want to be third-wheeling your Lady and the Tramp moment anyway.”
Immediately, you and Derek honed in on ‘meet someone’ and tried to question Sean further, wondering if he finally had a date and was moving on from Riley, but he refused to say, and threatened even to leave you stranded there, if you didn’t stop. So, laughing and making note to press again later, you let it go, settling into the backseat of the stupid orange station wagon (that Sean had for whatever reason decided to put back on the road, and somehow managed to pass the inspection to do so) for the short drive to the restaurant.
~
That night, you awkwardly insisted on sleeping on the couch, though you weren’t sure why. And then, you found yourself still staring, wide awake, at the ceiling at 3am, getting up to pace small circles around the apartment. Eventually your anxious steps brought you to the bedroom doorway. A strange fear clenched at your throat as you peeked in at Derek, sleeping almost as restlessly as you weren’t.
You turned to go, arm brushing the door and making it shift slightly. You weren’t sure if it was just enough to make a noise you didn’t notice or if it was coincidence that made Derek cry out at the same moment. You whipped around, heart racing with panic, to find him sitting upright in bed, clutching at his head.
“Y/N?” he croaked hoarsely after a moment, “that you?”
“Yeah. Yeah, sorry. Did I wake you?” you murmured, stepping closer. “Are you alright?”
“No.”
You crossed the rest of the distance and sat on the edge of the bed, his knee brushing your hip. Ducking your head, you scanned his face with concern in the dim moonlight. His brow was furrowed and his cheeks were shiny and wet with tear tracks.
“It was just a nightmare. Sat up too fast,” he assured you, meeting your gaze. “What were you doing?”
“I...don’t know. I couldn’t sleep. So I was pacing. And then I guess something told me to check on you?”
You didn’t tell him what the something was, that your mind had nagged that he wasn’t really there, would never be, would disappear and be gone and you’d be alone again. How could you, when it would just make him feel guilty or worry about you, and that was the last thing he needed. After all, it wasn’t like he tried to get attacked, and he had fought odds to come back to you already.
“You wouldn’t have to check on me if you just slept here, you know.”
“I don’t want you to feel smothered though,” you repeated the argument you’d made earlier, that at least for the transition, it would be better for him to sleep in the bed alone and get used to the space before adding in another element. But it felt weak then, and weaker now.
“I won’t.”
“But–”
“Baby girl,” he sighed, reaching out. On instinct you moved forward, leaning into his hold. “I don’t want to pressure you, I would never. But it might be better for both of us if you just came to bed, where you belong.”
You bit your lip, fighting back a sudden sob that threatened to wrench its way out of your throat. He was right. Right there, with his arms around you, holding you like he had done so many nights before all this, was the first time things felt like they were supposed to in a long time. All of your fear seemed to melt away with the smell of him, the sound of his heart beating beneath your ear, the feel of his skin on yours.
“I…okay,” you said softly. “I’ll stay.”
“Good.” He shifted over to make more room in the bed so that you could slot yourself in.
“On one condition.”
“Name it.”
“You’ll still be here in the morning.” You felt stupid saying it, but Derek had always been a morning person, and going to sleep beside him but waking up alone might drive you over the edge you felt yourself teetering on. “Or wake me up before you get up.”
He pulled you down so that you were both lying down, limbs tangled together in a familiar shape, and pressed a kiss to your temple.
“Of course. You don’t even have to ask.”
“Yes, I do.”
He was silent for a moment and you thought that he might have fallen back asleep that quickly, and then he hummed in understanding. You snuggled closer, pressing into him as much as you comfortably could and sighed, finally. You thought you could feel the tension leaking out of him, having you there settling something in him that couldn’t be explained, but you felt the same.
“Do you think it’ll feel like this forever?” he asked after another long silence.
“What?” you frowned. “Being glad to hold each other? Or feeling like we need to?”
“Like none of it’s real.”
“Oh. I hope not…”
“I won’t be mad if I have to keep doin this forever though.”
You laughed, murmuring your agreement. There were certainly worse outcomes than spending the rest of your life snuggling Derek.
--
Eventually, you settled into a routine. You finally started your job, at a small personal injury firm you could already tell wouldn’t be forever, but it fit for now, and Derek used work around the apartment as part of his exercises. Weeks passed and he started to branch out more, going back to Nino’s as a busser, and a sort of apprenticeship with the chef a few days at a time. His appointments gradually decreased, and you almost convinced yourself that everything was perfect.
But he still had days that hit hard: some where flashbacks would trap him in bed for hours, or leave him shaking too badly to even button a pair of jeans or drink a glass of water; others that were more physical, progress that felt more like a step backwards, or two or three. And then he would get frustrated, angry, depressed.
“You’re not an inconvenience, Derek,” you said on one night like that, after he had finished berating himself and screaming out everything that felt wrong. “And if I didn’t want you here, I’d kick you out.”
“But I’m so fucking useless. I ain’t contributing to the rent or the groceries, and I’m just breakin shit. How do you not hate me yet?”
“I could never. Besides, it’s not like it’s forever. You’ll finish with physical therapy and get your feet back under you and then…” you trailed off, realizing you didn’t know what would happen.
Even though you were going on six months of it, part of you still thought the arrangement was temporary. But you found yourself feeling miserable at the idea of going back to having an apartment to yourself, to not waking up next to Derek every morning or watching — and doing your best at helping — him cook dinner on good nights (which were growing more and more frequent to both your delight, even if tonight wasn’t one of them).
You bit your lip as you searched for an ‘and then’ that didn’t hurt to say.
“I’ll get a job, be able to help out more, and we’ll get a place together.”
Oh. Your heart raced that he wanted to take that step with you. “Oh.”
“We can do all that cute shit from the movies, like buy...dish towels.”
“I already have perfectly good dish towels. It’s not like they’re part of this place.”
“I know, but…” he looked uncertain, like he was beginning to think he’d said something wrong.
You walked over, resting your weight on your knees on the couch cushions to either side of his legs and catching his face between your hands. Gently, you rested your forehead against his so that you were looking him in the eyes.
“But if I have to sacrifice them to make a home with you, I’m okay with that,” you murmured, smiling softly.
His answering grin would have been blinding, if it didn’t disappear so quickly as he kissed you. You let yourself sink into him, sighing against his lips as he pulled you closer.
“How do you always do that?” he breathed when you broke apart.
“Do what?” you frowned at him in confusion, tilting your head slightly to the side.
“Know exactly what to do or say. Make me feel better, no matter what.”
You shrugged. “Just luck, or if you believe in it, the universe making sure we’re stuck with each other forever.”
“It doesn’t need to. Why would I want to give up the best thing that ever happened to me?”
You laughed, shaking your head and shifting to be more comfortable, though he kept true to his word and refused to let you go. “You’re such a sap.”
“But, I’m yours.”
“And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
--
You sighed, practically collapsing onto the living room floor, leaning back against a stack of boxes that had yet to be unpacked.
“We don’t have this much stuff, how are there so many boxes?” you asked.
Derek chuckled from the kitchen where he was sorting the Chinese takeout he’d just gone to pick up. “I’m pretty sure like eighty percent of those are your books, baby girl.”
“Hey! Don’t be so mean! I donated a bunch of them, and all my stupid stacks of textbooks, so…no more than fifty percent,” you laughed, sticking your tongue out at him as he passed you a carton of lo mein and sat down beside you.
“Still made the boxes damn heavy when Sean and I were carrying em in.”
“You’re the one who wouldn’t let me help.”
“I don’t want you gettin hurt.”
“I can take care of myself. And you two shouldn’t be getting hurt either. We’ve had enough of that for a lifetime, thank you.”
“I know. Trust me.” He pressed a slightly greasy kiss to your cheek and you made an exaggerated disgusted face as you tried to wipe it away.
You both relaxed, leaning into one another while you ate in silence.
“This is crazy, right?” you asked shortly after you had both set your food aside, leaning your cheek against his shoulder and looking up into his face.
“What is?” he frowned, wrapping an arm around you to pull you even closer.
“All of this. Us. Getting a place together.”
“I dunno,” he shrugged, awkwardly bouncing your head. “Gettin through everything to get here was nuts, sure. But…”
“Did you…think about this? Before I mean? That’d we live together someday?” you felt your heart stutter, somehow surprised by the revelation.
He chuckled uncomfortably, face reddening as he turned his head away from you. You couldn’t help but smile, finding it adorable that he was getting nervous and shy around you. “Yeah. Maybe. Once or twice. Didn’t you?”
“I–” you started to answer that you hadn’t, not for not wanting it, but out of fear, and froze.Your mind wandered to all of the mornings (or on very lucky weekends, early afternoons) waking up with his arms around you, or to the smell of fresh coffee he was setting on the nightstand, to the number of times you’d thought about him coming over after work as “coming home,” to this moment right here.
“Y/N?” Derek rubbed his fingers across your shoulder comfortingly, trying to get your attention gently.
You started, smiling sheepishly at him when you returned to the moment.
“You okay babe?”
“Yeah,” you bit your lip, frowning slightly. “Just thinking. I thought I hadn’t really thought about it, but I think I did, a lot more than I thought, and didn’t realize it.”
Derek stared at you for a moment, blinking owlishly. “What?” he laughed. “That makes no goddamn sense, even without all this,” he gestured to the scarring on his temple.
You shook your head dismissively. “Forget about it. I was just getting tangled in my own thoughts is all.”
“Alright.”
He shifted so that your head was resting over his heart instead of on his shoulder, tucked beneath his chin, and you wrapped your arms around his middle. You both half-laid there, looking around at the space, at the towers of totes and crates and other packing materials, carefully arranged for a compromise between access and stability, each imagining what it would look like when you were through the arduous task of putting everything in its place. Luckily, you were familiar with works in progress, and could easily see the promise of the future that the space held. You felt your eyelids drooping, the steady rhythm of his breathing beneath your ear lulling you and smiled softly. For once, you had everything you could ever want or need, right there beside you.
“I love you Derek,” you mumbled through a yawn.
“I love you too, Y/N,” he answered, kissing your brow. “Time for bed?”
“No. Not yet,” you protested. “I want to enjoy this for another minute. Who knows when we’ll have it like this again.”
He pulled you closer to being in his lap, making the boxes you were leaning on wobble unsteadily and you cast them a wary sidelong look before they settled. “I’m not complainin for sure.”
You couldn’t be sure what the morning would bring. If things with Cale Erendreich had taught you anything, it was not to take a single moment for granted. But you knew that whatever it was, come hell or high water, or horse-obsessed billionaire assholes, you would make it through together, and come out stronger on the other side. And what more could you ask for?

A Bullet for Sandoval stands out as an unsung gem in the wave of revisionist westerns emerging around 1967. Starring Ernest Borgnine at the height of his gruff powers, this dusty tale of revenge and morality offered a bold counterpoint to the romanticized western myths of decades past. Led by Borgnine's complex anti-hero, A Bullet for Sandoval provides a gripping exploration of violence begetting violence that still resonates today. John Warner ain't Josey WalesA Bullet for Sandoval fell between the cracksFinal thoughts on A Bullet for SandovalA Bullet for Sandoval is available November 7th John Warner ain't Josey Wales Directed by Julio Buchs and co-written by Leo Anchóriz and Buchs, the film centers on John Warner, a confederate soldier who deserts to search for his family following the Civil War. When his wife and son are murdered by a gang of Union soldiers, Warner becomes consumed by revenge under his new alias "Sandoval." Years later, Sandoval runs into one of the culprits who has become a wealthy cattle baron named Don Pedro Simeon. Playing a dangerous game, Sandoval infiltrates Don Pedro's gang posing as an outlaw gun-for-hire. But his schemes for vengeance soon entangle others, including a young widow and an idealistic Mexican revolutionary. Borgnine delivers one of his most complex performances as Sandoval, eliciting both empathy and condemnation for his endless pursuit of retribution. While criticized as "sadistic" by some at the time of release, Borgnine's gravitas elevates Sandoval into an anti-hero grappling with morality. The film pulls few punches in depicting the savage violence of Sandoval's world, but uses it to indict the human lust for vengeance. Co-lead Alberto de Mendoza provides an understated counterpoint as the wealthy Don Pedro, who proves more complicated than he first appears. Veteran actor Leo Anchóriz, who co-wrote the script, also stands out as a former priest tangled up in Sandoval's schemes. Filmed on location in Almería, Spain, the production took advantage of the region's desert landscapes that made it a popular shooting destination for westerns. A Bullet for Sandoval fell between the cracks While overlooked among Spain's flowering genre cinema scene of the era, A Bullet for Sandoval demonstrated how the western could powerfully tackle relevant themes. Sandoval's bitterness reflects the divisions of a post-Civil War America still struggling with open wounds. His blind rage offers a cautionary tale on cycles of violence fueling further conflict. Released in 1969 as the Vietnam War still raged, the film's underlying message warned against using past bloodshed to justify continued fighting. Beyond tackling anti-war sentiments, A Bullet for Sandoval also subverts macho western archetypes with rare feminist perspectives. Don Pedro's young widow Estella, played compellingly by Luciana Paluzzi, openly challenges the limited roles for women in this world. She condemns expectations that she obediently marry whoever inherits her deceased husband's land and wealth. Estella's defiance and resolve in the face of constant danger makes her one of the most progressive female characters found in genre cinema of the time. She emerges as an unlikely moral compass who tries to pull wayward men back from violence. A Bullet for Sandoval ultimately carries a heavy dose of melancholy, with Sandoval forced to confront the fruitlessness of his endless revenge. Final thoughts on A Bullet for Sandoval While overshadowed by Leone and Corbucci's breakthrough works, A Bullet for Sandoval proved Julio Buchs could deliver a distinctly gritty spin on the classic western formula. Borgnine added another memorable anti-hero to his rogues gallery after acclaimed turns in The Wild Bunch and The Dirty Dozen. Over 50 years later, the film's messages warning against hate-fueled violence still ring painfully true. With all the cynicism of a revisionist western but glimmers of humanity, A Bullet for Sandoval warrants rediscovery as a gritty meditation on morality. The VCI Blu-ray comes with the spanish language version of the film. You also get the extended English dialogue sequences and the US trailer. The big winner on the set is the Alex Cox commentary. He's like Scorsese, but for cult films. Pick this one up. A Bullet for Sandoval is available November 7th

Chapter 290: Endgame (Pt. 2)
Standing by with weapons raised, Colonel Ryerson’s unit closed in around the prince in silence. Still having doubts, however, the colonel decided to take full responsibility for its completion.
“I’ll take the shot,” he whispered, the coms system sending the signal to his team.
Ryerson held his weapon tightly, taking careful aim.
Regicide, he thought.
The word had been echoing in his head for hours now. The murder of a prince – even one as troublesome as Stephen – was a step Torenth wouldn’t be able to come back from. But it was too late to question his orders.
His finger tightened on the trigger.
“Stop right there,” a voice called out from behind him. “We have you surrounded.”
Ryerson froze, stunned, but did not lower his weapon. If he was to die, he would at least complete his mission.
He hardly felt the bullets as they ripped into his body, but remained conscious enough to feel corporal Sandoval holding him, and warmth spreading across his chest as the blood rushed from him.
Had he fired? Through the haze of pain and cold, Ryerson couldn't remember.
Then a uniformed figure approached – it was Prince Stephen, unharmed.
“Fooled you, didn’t I?” Sam Benedict said. In his beard and uniform, he looked very much like his sovereign. “Did you really think it would be that easy?”
Sam turned to his men.
“Round them up!” he said. “There are transports waiting at the gates. And get an ambulance in here for this man.”
Around him, Ryerson saw his men surrendering before he lost consciousness.
His mission was over. He had failed.

What do you think of Superman leaving Supergirl in an orphanage?
Guess this is the weekly review thread then!
Batman/Superman #8 - Of course I grinned in glee at Waid referencing that old Silver Age continuity of Clark dumping Kara into an orphanage because raising her himself would jeopardize his secret identity! Clark was a real dick back in the day and I am in favor of canonizing pieces of that. Waid is building a canon Neo-Silver Age in the book that I'm enjoying a lot, he and I see eye to eye with regards to Kara's characterization. She's traumatized and compensating for that trauma with aggression, but that means she's the one who reaches out to David when she sees he's hurting because she knows what to say (or at least she thinks she does, David's situation is clearly being built up to be partly his fault). Key was used well here in a way that made him a credible threat, Batman teasing Robin about his failed date with Supergirl was funny, and I'm actually eager to see the Joker get involved.
Nightwing #97 - Solicits made it seem like Dick would propose to Babs but that hasn't happened yet. I'm wondering if plans changed at the last second, or if it was just solicits lying as they sometimes do. Maybe issue 100 will be the actual proposal? I don't really enjoy the way Taylor writes Dick and Babs together, but like it or not DC seems committed to those two are the OTP, might as well pull the trigger on it.
Batman: One Bad Day: Penguin - First one of these I can give a thumbs up to! We get a compact Penguin origin, we get a focus on his relationship to Gotham and Batman, and we get to see what he believes is his role in the status quo. Penguin is a character defined both by his brains and by getting lucky which Ridley did a great job showing as we follow Penguin climbing back to the top from his starting point of having nothing but one gun and a single bullet. Bit of an asspull that Batman would let Penguin and Umbrella Man fight each other to the death for control, that's a "I won't kill you but I don't have to save you" moment which you can either accept or it will ruin the story for you.
I Am Batman #14 - Now here is where the lucky breaks Ridley employs didn't work for me, Jace accuses a guy of murder with no evidence and instead of just brushing him off the guy tries to kill him. It's too convenient and doesn't feel believable, Ridley needs to start developing Jace as a detective because Jace sucks at it, and I don't think Ridley realizes that.
Batman: The Knight #10 - Batman: Year One is the best entry for Batman comics as a whole, but this strikes me as the best jump on point for the new era that Tynion kicked off and Zdarsky is continuing.
Black Adam #5 - I am actually excited to see Batman show up in someone else's comic. Unbelievable. Priest's attempt to provide a "realistic" explanation for the gods stalking Adam and Malik is convoluted and hurts the book, DC's cosmology is a pain in the ass to wrap your head around already, just make them gods Priest instead of sentient bacteria that evolved into gods because of Adam... being afraid and the Dark Multiverse reaching out to make his fears real? Can't wrap my head around it and Priest tends to love making things ambiguous that would be better off simple. Adam and Malik are entertaining nonetheless, and given Malik is in Lazarus Planet and the DC Power oneshot, maybe I was wrong about him dying after all. Do feel bad that Sandoval is getting poached but Eddy Barrows is a great replacement.
X-Men #16 - So Synch and Old Woman Laura will go back into the Vault and stay there as Guardians over the Children right? Feels like that's where this is going. Must admit I'm disappointed Duggan is the one finally addressing this particular issue over Hickman, Ewing, or Gillen, especially since this was an issue Hickman had seeded from the beginning of the Krakoa era.
Miracleman: The Silver Age #1 - Finally after all this time we're getting this series. First two issues are reprints with new art, and I gotta say it looks gorgeous.

narcos!!
yaaaaaaaaas thank u bb
Favorite character
i can't pick one, i love them all equally (except steve because he's a bit dull). but let's see:
(from L-R)
javier peña: he's the bi king that the show deserves and needs; sleazy af but is a good man who'd totally sleep with his informants because why not? he's an expert at mixing business w/ pleasure. made heart eyes at his cop bf and literally sold his soul to the devil after pablo tricked him and killed his cop bf. also, pedro pascal is an infinity/10 #, so 🥺
horacio carrillo: said cop bf who kinda went off the deep end right before he died. was an incorruptible cop who told pablo to go fuck himself, pissed on a mural dedicated to pablo in broad daylight to make a statement, made heart eyes at javier, never pays his tab (javi calls him a cheap bastard for it, that's how the show starts lol), loves his wife a lot, trusts javi with his life and then dies because they all got played. also maurice compte, guy who plays him, is such so fucking intense lmao.
pacho herrera: he's one of the drug bosses of the cali cartel and he makes guest appearances in narcos: mexico. i love how fiercely loyal he is to the cartel because they accepted him for who he was; he was an openly gay man who was feared and respected, and alberto ammann is so damn precious.
(honorary ~mentions~: manolo cardona and raúl méndez, who played eduardo sandoval and president césar gaviria. they were so tragic and were probably the only ~unproblematic characters by tungle's standard.)
Second favorite character
lol basically i love them all. see above 😂. maybe jose salcedo, who was mostly a character in season 3.
Least favorite character
navegante. the actor was great but the character was creepy af. look!
The character I’m most like
probably bill stechner, a chaotic evil who played the cia station chief and enjoyed watching the chaos unfold from afar. i, too, love watching drama unfold from afar when im not involved.
Favorite pairing
it's a bit hard to ~ship characters here since they're mostly based on real life people. but i'd say javi and carrillo had insane chemistry, so did césar and eduardo. i would totally ship judy moncada w/ javi tho because she was the only one who commiserated with him after carrillo died (context being pablo had also killed her husband, so she knew what it felt like when he killed someone close to you)
Least favorite pairing
steve and connie. i mean, their whole storyline was just so wholly uninteresting to me
Favorite moment
when javi goes with carrillo's team to take down a drug lord named gacha. before they go, javi tries to convince carrillo that taking gacha in alive would be better, but carrillo calls him out that javi isn't really risking anything, he has no family in colombia etc. in the end, they get separated during the raid and javi was trailing gacha in a helicopter. carrillo tells him over the radio, it's his choice if he wants to take in gacha alive. and javi tells the cop with him to literally shower gacha with bullets. poetic cinema.
Rating out of 10
9/10 (they tried to cover too long a timeline in season one and only nine months of history in season two. season three was a bit bland)
Send me series and I’ll tell you my:
