Okay, I just found one little pet peeve of mine - or rediscovered it, found it anew, that absolutely ruins a fanfic for me in this fandom: Non-canonical pet-names. The characters DO have canonical nicknames / pet-names. Vash is given "Needle Noggin / Spiky / Tongari (JP)" by Wolfwood and "Broomhead" by Meryl. Wolfwood has been bestowed "Mr. Priest" by Milly ('98 anime). Milly is termed "Big Girl" by Wolfwood, and "honey" ('98) and "The Big One" by Vash. Milly and Meryl collectively are termed "Insurance Girls" by Vash. But then I'll read some ship-fic that *supposedly* takes place in-series somewhere (for any given series or that combo-platter that so many fanficcers do) that has someone calling someone "baby" or "bae" or "honey" (with the exception of '98 set Millywood), or...ugh... Wolfwood calling Vash "angel." It just... there's a needle-scratch there. Even if everything else in the fic is in-character that draws me out of character for a moment because I never saw this happening anywhere in canon and it seems "too sweet" for a gruff character. I'm okay with it if there's an established relationship going on and it's not in-series, but is something like a post-canon AU where Everybody Lives or an AU in general. I think in even something like that, canon-established nicknames would stick. I just feel like Wolfwood would stick to "Needle Noggin" (affectionate) over "angel." Or Meryl would say "Good morning, Broomhead" over the "angels" and the "honeys" and the "babys." idk, just a little nitpick of mine, personal preference.
