This week’s episode is a personal one. We talk to @SunnyMegatron’s 91-year-old Uncle George. He tells us what it was like growing up as a gay man in Chicago in the 1940s. This was when being ‘homosexual’ was illegal and frequenting gay bars and meeting places could result in jail time. George traveled to dozens of countries throughout the mid 20th century, some more accepting than the US and others downright dangerous for gay travelers. An incident in South Africa almost landed him in prison for murder! George recounts living through the AIDS crisis and losing dear friends, how acting conservative with those he was out to ensured his security, the pain of having to hide his lifestyle & partners from family, the very first pride parades, his opinion on LGBTQ+ issues today, the struggles gay elderly people face, brushes with gay celebrities in the golden age of Hollywood, and more. A missed flight, rental car, excessive tolls, and a 0200 hotel stay later, and none of it mattered once I saw the look of shocked joy on my Grandma’s face yesterday. There’s nothing my Grandma doesn’t deserve and there was no way I was going to miss celebrating her 91st birthday! @jspires1975 - To all the vets and their families on here. First, I'm not exactly complaining, just giving you a heads up. Long story short, our 91 year grandfather got injured in Germany hunting down nazi's, he had to find them for war crime trials. He was in the hospital for a year, came home crippled. Eventually he was able to walk, but he still can't feel his feet. He is rated 70% disabled and we were told by the Dorn VA that when he got to a certain point, they would place him in a long term care facility. Until two months ago he was great, all of a sudden he lost his mind, frontal dementia or something like that. Bottom line is that the VA can't place him in South Carolina, the only place he has lived for 91 years, except for the 3 years he spent fighting in Germany. They are looking to send him to another state. Thankfully he can afford a place in West Columbia, so he will be fine. Point is, don't rely on the VA, when you need them, they won't be there like they lead you to believe. They won't even let us transfer him to the VA hospital, apparently they don't have the ability to deal with a man that is being chased by the men he killed for his country (he is having hallucinations, seeing the people he killed). If the VA was your plan, find another one. Not complaining, maybe a little bit, just wanted to let people know how it may end up, they literally told me no, we will not take him in at this hospital.
