Thank you for the tags @paperstorm @henrygrass @carlossreaders ! Work is Published Wednesday today! Here’s a bit from chapter 2 of my teen au Stone Cold Will You Miss Me, up on AO3. (There’s a third part coming next week but it’s not ready!!)

Gingerly climbing out of bed, TK takes a moment to find his sea legs before wobbling over to the doorway to pull on his discarded sneakers. He has to sit on the floor to get them on, which is surprisingly comfortable. He takes a moment to relish not being upright before Gabriel’s boots are next to him on the carpet.

“You’re almost as bad as Carlitos. Let me help you up.”

As Gabriel pulls TK to his feet, TK has the curious feeling he’s being arrested by a sheriff in an old Western movie. On charges of corrupting the sheriff’s handsome son, no doubt. Gabriel claps a hand to TK’s shoulder and TK tries not to sway right into the brim of Gabriel’s Stetson.

“All right, TK, let’s go,” Gabriel says. Off to the jailhouse, TK thinks dizzily. Or maybe they’ll have a shootout at high noon.

I know Carlos is still very much processing his grief and burying himself in his work and the search for his father's killer. But there's something about when he's talks with Mr. Soup Man about Gabriel being an "insufferable pain in the ass" and the way he smiles and laughs in response...

One of the tasks of grieving is learning to laugh and smile again when you're thinking about your loved one... and this feels like a small touch of healing to me.

As a person of colour with an immigrant mom and grandparents, Carlos's coming out story is one of the most realistic I've seen.

I love how they make it clear that his parents aren't ashamed or full on homophobic, they just feel uncomfortable cause there dealing with something they never thought they would have to deal with before.

It's kind of like how before coming to Canada, my Grandmama knew what snow was, she just never thought she would have to deal with it hands on and tried avoiding doing so.

Unfortunately by showing that they were uncomfortable, it made Carlos uncomfortable in his own sexuality. Not just his sexuality but things like interacting with people of the opposite gender and showing PDA to TK. It's a huge part of Latin American culture to be aware of such things (coming from someone from the Caribbean) and since a lot of immigrant communities that parents or grandparents may currently be a part of still thinks this way it is easy to have those thoughts transpired to you, even if you're "westernized".

The thing I love though is that his parents (specifically his mom) recognize and apologize for pushing their discomfort onto him and change their viewpoints. They apologize with a way of realizing their son, even though they raised him, is still a separate human being from them (to a certain extent; Mrs. Reyes still has her Carlitos) and that Carlos has feelings too. They talk directly to him like he is a human being. They also make it clear that they were in the wrong in the situation and don't put the blame on him for how they reacted, which is something that unfortunately happens a lot when children are finally given the apology they need from their parents.

Bottom line: Andrea and Gabriel (RIP my dude) are some of the best, of not the best parents in Lone Star and that I wish we could see more storylines like this in the mainstream media. It would help address a lot of the issues faced by people in similar situations like Carlos.

I’m obsessed with Ranger Soup not being able to escape having a Reyes man in his life to be a royal pain in his ass. Like Gabriel died and then BOOM there’s Carlos. In the exact same desk. Right next to him.
