I came across this (very good) post about Tommy's past at the 118, which quotes Eli talking to Chim in 2x12 after Chim's failed attempt of becoming friendly with Tommy. Eli says:

"It's not personal, you know. Look, in this job, friends die and funerals are held. They're not gonna just give you their friendship until you earn their respect. They're not just protecting you, they're protecting themselves. You don't name a puppy until you know it's gonna pull through."

Given how little we know about Tommy's past, in the military as well as at the 118 under Gerrard, the line about friends dying made me think. It's not quite clear if Eli talks about Tommy specifically or about the whole team losing someone and I know it was mostly meant as foreshadowing of what would happen with Kevin--but what if it was about Tommy?

What if Tommy had lost a good friend on the job? A friend that was maybe more than just a friend? At least to Tommy? Maybe it was a guy Tommy had a big fat crush on? Maybe it was a guy he had steadily, silently fallen in love with? What if, maybe, possibly, it was a guy Tommy secretly had a thing with? And now the guy is dead and Tommy can never tell him how much he meant to him. And just as bad, he can't talk to anyone else about it either. And he's just trying to cope, trying not to let his grief show, always afraid of raising anyone's suspicion that he's taking the loss much harder than the rest of the team, much harder than he should. Each time the guy's name comes up, it feels like a punch to the gut and the one time he doesn't manage not to flinch, he immediately feels Gerrard's eyes on him.

Listen, I know there's nothing to back this up, and it's making me sad thinking about it, but also, think about what that would mean years down the road, when Buck, inevitably, gets hurt on the job while they're together?

Love the hug from Tommy. It wasn’t simply thank you or handshake, he gave a beautiful, snug hug. I obviously still don’t like how he treated Howie or Hen, but I’m assuming he becomes a better person through what I’ve heard and seen and you have to allow people to grow and change.
