Lyrics:
Ooh, baby, I love your way, every day, yeah
Ooh, baby, I love your way, every day
Shadows grow so long before my eyes
And they're moving across the page
Suddenly the day turns into night (ooh)
Far away from the city
But don't, oh no, hesitate
'Cause your love just won't wait, ayy-yeah
Ooh, baby, I love your way, every day, yeah
I wanna tell you I love your way, every day, yeah
I wanna be with you night and day
The moon appears to shine and light the sky
With the help of some fireflies
I wonder how they have the power to shine, shine, shine
Well, I can see them under the pine
But don't, whoa no, no, hesitate, la-di-da
'Cause your love just won't wait, ayy-yeah
Ooh, baby, I love your way, every day, yeah
I wanna tell you I love your way, every day, ayy-yeah
I wanna be with you night and day
Whoa baby, oh baby, please, every day
How I love, how I love you, oh
I love your way
Ooh, baby please
I can see the sunset in your eyes
Brown and grey, and blue besides
Clouds are stalking islands in the sun
I wish I could buy one out of season
But don't, whoa no, no, hesitate, la-di-da
'Cause your love just won't wait (ayy-yeah), just won't wait
Billi-aboo-dee-dee-da-di-do-sta-da-bee-yeah
Ooh, baby, I love your way, every, every day
I wanna tell you I love your way
(I wanna tell you, how I love your little ways)
I wanna be with you night and day (every day and every way)
Songwriter: Peter Kenneth Frampton

London Hip Hop Playlist
Something that Brits really seem to go absolutely fucking nuts over are breakbeats. They singlehandedly invented jungle and drum n bass with them, as well as the genres of breakbeat and breakbeat hardcore as well, and out of breakbeat also came big beat, which was that fun party stuff that was huge in the late 90s and early 2000s that was made popular by people like Fatboy Slim, the Chemical Brothers, and The Prodigy.
But another thing that Brits naturally applied breakbeats to was hip hop, which, after it had managed to make its way from New York, led to the formation of a UK-specific genre in the late 80s called Britcore. And Britcore featured people (almost strictly blokes) spitting furiously over slammin' breakbeats. Basically, if you love old school rap records like I do, you are *really* missing out if you never messed with any of this stuff at all, because while the US continuously led the way, the UK was cooking up some seriously overlooked unique fire on the back-burner that never really managed to make it into the American hip hop diet.
So, here's a bunch of dope rap tunes from London that span from the late 80s to mid-90s, a lot of which are Britcore tracks. And my #1 favorite among all of these is, hands-down, "Doomsday of Rap," by Hijack, which isn't just the greatest Britcore song that I've ever heard, but is also, to me, just one of the best pieces of old school hip hop that's ever been made, period. In fact, this tune, which lays ferociously raw lyrics over a sample of the Incredible Bongo Band's iconic "Apache," actually helped Hijack to catch the ear of none other than Ice-T, who then signed them to his own Rhyme Syndicate label. And "Doomsday of Rap" is probably one of the least obscure songs among this set here, but considering just how irresistibly good it is, a Spotify play count of around 75,200 still feels a bit low.
Another banger on here, though, which does have an obscenely low play count is Kobalt 60's "Kaos From Order," which seems to sample its breakbeat from Tom Jones' "Looking Out My Window," and also adds these forceful "ba-ba-ba-ba" male vocals in the second verse too. And I have no idea where those specific vocals come from, but they really enhance this whole track, overall, which is only sitting at a little under 1,900 total plays.
I also included a couple cuts from a slick-tongued ragga hip hop star originally from Jamaica named Daddy Freddy, too, who moved to London and then made some choice tracks, like "Go Freddy Go" and "Haul & Pull." The version of "Go Freddy Go" that I've added has about 16,700 plays, and a remix of "Haul & Pull" that was done by Bobby Konders has about 32,900.
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible.
Lady Sugar Sweet - "Sugar Sweet" Thrashpack - "Trigger Happy" Hijack - "Doomsday of Rap" MC Duke - "I'm Riffin" MC Duke - "Gotta Get Your Own" Hardnoise - "Untitled" SL Troopers - "Movement" Standing Ovation - "Onslaught" Daddy Freddy - "Go Freddy Go" The 3 Knights - "Burial Proceedings" Militant Posture - "Dawn of Terror" Brothers on Organised Missions - "B.O.O.M." Brothers on Organised Missions - "Delivering the Answer" Kobalt 60 - "Kaos From Order" Daddy Freddy - "Haul & Pull" Killa Instinct - "Un-United Kingdom"
And, of course, there's a YouTube version of this playlist too, which includes a couple more gems that aren't on Spotify, like a tune that's actually not Britcore, but takes a page out of Pete Rock's relaxational jazz-rap stylebook instead: 499's "Don't Categorise Me," which has around 11,600 plays across a bunch of different uploads on YouTube.
Demon Boyz - "Rougher Than an Animal" 499 - "Don't Categorise Me"
And this playlist is on YouTube Music as well.
So, with the unveiling of this playlist, we start with 68 minutes worth of tunes on Spotify, and 78 minutes over on YouTube. And because the YouTube version has that 499 track, I definitely recommend you check out that version rather than the Spotify one 😊.
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!

breakcore has always been a really open-ended genre that can be fused to a lot of different sounds. this can make it hard to concretely characterize.
relevant image:
when you go through the artists (some i would debate listing, some i haven't heard, but i've listened to most) different influences push and pull the same "genre" in many directions--IDM, gabber, oldschool rave, ragga, jungle, jazz, speedcore, juke, metal... and so on.
in a way, breakcore is characterized by its diversity in sampling, genre blends, and production styles. but on the whole, it prioritizes atypical, dynamic percussive programming (featuring, of course, drum breaks) over melodic components.
additionally, i think it's loosely characterized by a transgressive nature--it's edgy! which thankfully doesn't just mean offensive. it means challenging genre conventions, expectations of song structures and priorities, expectations around samples and their associations, and the general sense of "listenability".
at times i worry that i have no right to "gatekeep" the breakcore label from nubreak producers when it's always been really flexible. but i feel that the atmospheric dnb inspired sound returns the percussion to the background, simplifying programming and sanding off the edges of its older, weirder inspiration.
breakcore can be many things, but above all, i think it should be weird, interesting, and a little hard to categorize. there's no way to recapture the exact historical moment of the original 90's-00's scene, but for as long as the word keeps being used, i hope we can carry forward the things that made it special.

Records i've actually actively gone out of my way to buy now and first up, this.
So if you know me at all, you know i like Nia Archives and old school jungle especially. Her blend of frantic old 90s ragga breakbeat are loads of fun. And i really just bought this for Baianá which is more Brazilian in sound, but impossible to not start bouncing about to. But then the other tracks come in and as much as So Tell Me and Conveniency both grew on me after a few times hearing them on the radio, they are starting to veer a little towards a bit more of a poppy sound.
And yeah, i get it, she's getting traction under her career, she might be being pushed into a more marketable sound, or she might just be making tunes that she likes for herself and either way, i can dig it. I wouldn't begrudge her for making music that isn't possibly as good as her first EP, just because it's a bit slower, calmer, and less mental. But yeah, wasn't really feeling it as much for the rest of the album.
The last track kicks off a bit but then just ends as it's getting good. Which was a bit disappointing and kind of sums up the whole EP to be honest. Moments of fucking greatness but just a little underwhelming.

Lyrics:
Come with me did you feel so fully irate
Me put under arrest in a new york city
In a dance hall in a dance hall on a dance floor
We do a rum dance man
Raggaman yes it's a raggaman jump
People drinking champagne up
Mum-do-lafasha
Pump it up start to swing about day
While you listen to the music jump up and party.
Ragga this ragga that and a rub-a-dub style
Feeling okay yeah feeling so irate
I'm a white man I'm a white man
Ragga with me and get ready to dance man
Boom-shug-a-lug girl open your mind
I'm a white raggaman maybe one of a kind
I'm a raggaman yes gonna make my day
Open your mind I'm your get away.
Get away get away you're my get away
Get away baby I want to break out
Get away get away you're my get away
Get away get away.
Brl brl bey me feeling irate
Come back again with a sound of karate
On the party I'm the danceman
Flipping around to a rock about style
Drinking champagne up full a fashion
Party people do the wrong dance manner
In the club man on the dance floor
Everybody do the wrong dance manner.
Get away get away you're my get away
Get away baby I want to break out
Get away get away you're my get away
Get away get away.
I need you night and day baby I need you
You're still my get away
Take you night night and day
I want to break out now you're my get away
I need you night and day
Get away get away.
Do it do it baby do it night and day
Do it do it baby you're my get away.
