One of the most heart-wrenching things that've ever happened to me occurred while trying to research the Super Paper Mario art style.

"Ohh what a beautiful and interesting art style! It is very distinctive! I wonder if anyone else has tried or wanted to try breaking it down and replicating it?" Obliviously, I typed in Super Paper Mario Art Style into my search bar... only to find many people calling it ugly and saying they hate it.

This simply could not be... permanent damage was done to my artistic soul.

No joy? No whimsy in this world? No love of computer graphics? Of a certain era of clipart? Of the art that was born from the computer and is difficult to replicate without one? Of the art made when this was something new and fascinating? No love for something unique?

Super Paper Mario don't listen to all those haters I love your geometric art style influenced by what shapes are easily drawn on a computer and the smooth mechanical interpolation within your animations. I love you. Also the music is banger.

This took so long to finish but I had a ton of fun with these!

Adapting their hairstyles was a challenge since I wanted to keep the number of tentacles accurate to each species. Lotus' ponytail is only two large tentacles tied together and her side braids are constructed the same way that the braid style from Splatoon 3 is! Santa's little spikes follow the same principle as the messy grilled tentacles style (from 3 as well)

I could have done other species but I decided to go with inklings and octolings to keep things simple. I have some concept art for alternate designs though! I might make them happen sometime

this is from the fic jokingly titled Accepting All Comers, in which Buck's 1.0 days keep coming back to bite him on calls, and Eddie is slowly going insane.

“Firehose?!” It’s a screech, and the man claps his hand over his mouth the second he says it.  Eddie’s forehead wrinkles. “Sorry?”  “Seriously?” The teenage girl in the back rolls her eyes. “This is Firehose?”  Buck is stammering a little from the other side of the sedan. “H-hey, guys. We’re gonna get you out of here, okay? Any of you hurt?”  Eddie ducks his head in the window, trying to make eye contact with the driver. “Hey, man, LAFD. I’m Eddie, can you tell me your name?”  He looks to Buck again before he meets Eddie’s eyes, mouth working like a fish out of water. “Sorry, what?”  Buck sighs. “His name’s Dean. That’s Dani.” He points to the passenger seat.  Eddie doesn’t have time to ask how Buck knows them or why he seems so resigned about it before Buck’s ducking into the backseat to check on the girl. She tells him her name is Jo, but she gives him a withering look while she does it. “They’re such bad liars.”  Buck hums noncommittally as he asks her about any injuries. Once he’s satisfied that she’s safe to move, he helps her out of the car. “Just give us a few minutes, we’ll have your parents out in no time.” 

Jo goes to sit on the curb while Buck and Eddie get her parents free from the air bags and dented doors. All three of them seem unscathed, considering, but Eddie heads over to the curb with them to check them over just in case. Buck hands him the med kit before he squats down in front of Dani with a blood pressure cuff. “How’re you feeling?”  “I think I’m okay." She offers him a weak smile. "Thanks, Buck.”  “How do you all know each other?” Eddie asks, trying to distract the driver, whom Eddie would definitely say has a concussion if he could identify any other symptoms besides the guy acting like a skittish wild animal.  “Work!” He practically yells at the same time Dani offers “Gym.”  Dean gives Dani a pleading look, but Jo interrupts them both. “I already know, guys. We seriously don’t need to talk about it.”
