When they were introduced in DS9, it was sort of ambiguous as to whether Section 31 was bigger than Sloan, or if he was just a single (potentially rogue) agent of Starfleet Intelligence. Later series' have taken the idea of Section 31 and run with it, but I personally always liked the idea that Sloan was largely working alone and outside of standard Starfleet Intelligence practices.

When coming up with the idea for the character/concept and the arc, was the intent for Section 31 to be more of a rogue faction, or were they always meant to be a real part of Starfleet Intelligence?

I always thought S31 was bigger than Sloan, but smaller than how it's appeared in later episodes. Not one guy, but not thousands of people. Maybe... dozens? A couple hundred tops. In my mind they're definitely a rogue faction and not an official part of Starfleet Intelligence.

With the announcement of the new movie starring Michelle Yeoh, it seems I have to go on my Section 31 rant again.

Section 31 was only done well in Deep Space Nine because the writers of Deep Space Nine understood that SECTION 31 ARE THE BAD GUYS.

They were used as a foil for the grey morality of the show as a warning of "This is where you will go if you continue on this path". Section 31 was the logical endpoint of the show's themes of sacrificing your ethics, morality, and principles in a pragmatic "the ends justify the means" mentality in order to defend those ethics, morals, and principles.

Because you CAN'T.

If you compromise your ethics, morals, and principles in an attempt to defend those very same things, what exactly are you defending? Things you yourself tossed aside when they became inconvenient.

All three (yes, there were only three) episodes of DS9 centering on Section 31 featured Bashir resolving the conflict of that episode WITHOUT compromising his integrity as a citizen of the Federation and a Starfleet officer.

Up to and including preventing Section 31 from committing genocide. Yeah, remember that? When Section 31 infected Odo with a degenerative virus so that he would spread it to the Great Link and kill all of the Changelings? Then specifically stonewalled Bashir when he attempted to find a cure?

Section 31 is not just a tool for telling happy funtime spy stories in Star Trek. That organization is called Starfleet Intelligence and was already around long before DS9. Section 31 is an unauthorized unelected black ops group that functions outside any chain of command or authority that can place any checks on their use and abuse of power. You know, just like EVERY OTHER evil Starfleet officer in every other episode where some Admiral goes off the deep end and starts doing shady shit the Enterprise then has to stop.

Section 31 are the bad guys. They are not antiheroes. They are not just the darker side of Starfleet. They are not the people who must do the evil things that have to be done. They are just evil. Period.

Morning cuddles

You shifted in your bed, feeling yourself return from the dreamlike trance you were previously wrapped in. Your hands traveled upwards to something warm and firm, and felt strong arm encircle around your shoulders in response. You leaned forwards into the embrace of your lover, listening to his quiet breathing and gentle heartbeat. “Morning, Sephi…” You nuzzled his chest, enjoying the smoothness of his skin and how his muscles flexed under your touch. “Morning, fluffpuff.” He responded, squeezing you slightly before pressing a kiss to your forehead. “Sleep well?” You nodded; your eyes still glued shut with sleep. “Did you ?” Sephiroth chuckled and kissed your forehead again. “I always sleep well when you’re around.” You grinned, sliding your arms under his large frame and around his waist. “That so?” Sephiroth hummed in response, delicately toying with some of your hair. “You comfort me.” You rubbed your eyes and opened them, gazing up at the drowsy angel in your bed with adoration. “Aww,” You leaned forward and kissed his cheeks. “I’m glad.” You changed position, moving to straddle him so you could lie down completely on his broad chest. He chuckled and continued playing with your hair, one arm over your lower back. “It’s still early,” He muttered, watching you sprawled out on top of him. “Want to sleep some more?” You nodded tiredly, drowsiness overtaking you yet again. “Alright.” Sephiroth sat up slightly; a poof was heard and his huge, black wing appeared on his right side. “An extra blanket.” He said, smirking. You giggled and pressed yourself against him as the wing descended upon the both of you, enveloping you two in a soft, fluffy, silky blanket. “It’s so soft,” You remarked, running your fingers across the sleek feathers. Sephiroth nodded, picking up a stray feather that had fallen onto his shoulder and using it to tickle the tip of your nose. “Hey, stop that!” You said, playfully smacking his hand away. Sephiroth lightly slapped you back with his wing. “You stop that.” You both grinned at each other before nestling back into a hug. “Sweet dreams, fluffpuff.” Sephiroth whispered, kissing your forehead. “Same to you, Sephi…” You mumbled, closing your eyes. Before either of you knew it, you were drifting off to dreamworld, intertwined in each other’s arms.

The fact that canonically the end of origins and act one of da2 are only a year apart is so funny to me. From what I could find, both take place in 9:31 dragon. So this means Awakening took place in maybe like. Four five months. So Anders leaves Amaranthine, trying to escape warden life, and then immediately falls in with ANOTHER weirdo with a hero complex. And then the guy can drag him BACK to the deeproads which he hates and thought he wouldn't have to do any for a long long time. No wonder Anders and Justice struggle so much they didn't even have a whole year after merging before they went to the Worst Place Possible. Like for all the places for a possessed apostate to go, Kirkwall is probably THE worst choice possible

WIP Wednesday 9/11/24 (Closed) | Four Horsemen (1/10)

Andrew, logically, knows that while the world is spinning, it is not spinning anywhere near as fast as it feels like it is at this moment. Well, the earth is spinning at about 1,000 miles per hour, which is about as fast as it feels like at this moment. He looks to his side and sees Aaron has closed his eyes and is swaying on his feet.

He looks out into the church and amongst the crowd he can pinpoint every single Fox just due to how the pink of Nicky’s dress code really pulls out the green in everyone’s complexion. His eyes shift to Neil and the reddish tint to his hair is doing him no favors in not looking as if he is moments away from losing it.

He breathes through his nose and out his mouth as he turns his attention back to Nicky standing two feet away from him. Nicky’s eyes are locked on Erik and Andrew can see how his cousin is holding Erik’s hands as the man recites his vows to Nicky from memory.
