Being in a relationship with a worldwide famous idol is never easy. Learning to understand and appreciate the value of the relationship regardless of its limited-time came easy to you. That’s one of the reasons why he became interested in you in the first place. You never came off as overbearing and clingy and you always understood why things had to be different. And that added to the list of things he already absolutely adored about you.
It had been a year since Jungkook had confessed to you backstage that night, asking you to be his lover and promising that he would cherish you like no one ever will. And you can confidently say he very much did at the beginning, commonly known as the honeymoon stage. Things only started to fizzle out and go downhill a few months ago. His group was scheduled for a new comeback. He was promoting and traveling around the world while you were on the sidelines and comfort of your home, cheering him and his group on. Daily texts and calls kept both of you grounded and steady, but as time passed by, those texts and calls ceased to exist. You had been constantly ignored and you didn’t think much of it at first, after all, he was a busy man with a busy schedule. The tour had finally been coming to an end and he’d have the opportunity to come home to you, just in time for your one year anniversary. He had flown in 2 weeks precedent to your anniversary, and fuck, you were so happy to be with him again.
He had made a promise to you that you two would get to spend a lot more time together as he was coming back. You two had finally been living together again after what seemed like years as his group had gotten a break after such a hectic year. He would go to his company need to work on future projects and such and it didn’t bother you at first. He would typically come back home late while you were sleeping and leave early in the morning before you would wake up. As it occurred more frequently, you started to become more concerned. He was finally home for once and he wasn’t even making time to see you. You didn’t want to seem annoying and clingy so you decided to push these thoughts to the back of your head and keep them to yourself.
-
You had agreed to have a celebration at home, figuring all the restaurants in the vicinity would be closed by the time he’d get home. You patiently waited in the living room, coffee table filled with his favorite foods and snacks you were able to pick up at the local convenience store. He had told you the night before he’d be coming home at 9, a little later than you liked, but you let it slide nonetheless. You essentially cherished all the time you had with him anyway, whether it be a minute, an hour, or a month.
You mindlessly sat in the living room, not paying attention to whatever was playing on the TV. Your ears were constantly alert and peeled, waiting for a familiar car to pull up to your driveway. Your eyes constantly shifted back to your front window, scanning the neighborhood to see if he was back yet or not.
Time ticked by like molasses, your patience and tolerance wavering as it went on. There were no signs of him and he wasn’t answering any of your calls and texts. You were in complete disbelief at the fact that he didn’t have the decency to spend time with you on your first anniversary. Everything you had been holding in was starting to seep out of you, anger and sadness fuming from your system as you ask yourself the same question: Why do you constantly put yourself in this situation? Being hopeful for something just to let it get torn down again. Is that what your relationship has turned into? An insurmountable lost hope?
For the first time, you realized all you’ve been doing his abiding by him, waiting for his cues, going off of his beck and call. You were being walked all over, and you didn’t realize until that moment. For the first time, you were fed up.
You groan in frustration as you snatch your phone from the coffee table. It was 2:34 AM. You furrow your brows as you see how late it is, and how many hours it’s been since he was supposed to come home. Your emotions took control of you as you hastily shut off the TV, charging into your room as you recklessly grab one of your backpacks and stuff random clothes into it.  You grab the nearest hoodie you could find and slipped it on as you grabbed your wallet, keys, and phone. You abruptly halt at the doorway, deciding to write a small note for him before you left. What were the chances he would see it anyway?
I need some time alone to think. Please do not contact me during this time. -Y/N
You stormed out of the house, slamming the door shut behind you. You quickly started your car and pulled out of your driveway and into the streets. You didn’t know where you were going, but you just didn’t want to stay in that house any longer. The streets were empty and the sky was dull and overcast. You let the streets guide you, taking whatever twist and turn you happened to encounter. Your hands were gripped tightly along the steering wheel as tears slipped out of your eyes. You quickly wipe them away as you recalibrate your focus on the road ahead of you. You decided it’d be best to stay at a hotel for now, until you could think of a better solution to all of this. You were able to find a hotel that had lower rates since you literally bought it on the spot.
You checked into the hotel and quickly escaped to your room. You throw your backpack to the floor as you lower yourself into the cold, unfamiliar sheets of the bed. You contemplate your options. As much as you didn’t want to admit, all your actions leading up to that moment had been caused by pent up rage and frustration in the heat of the moment. In spite of that, you didn’t regret what you had done. It felt as if time had frozen and it would only continue once Jungkook became aware of what you had done. So you were going to wait.
-
Jungkook stumbled into the home, hair disheveled and vision blurry from his near sleepless night. While working at the studio he had unknowingly fallen asleep while working on a track. All of his members had already gone back home so there was no one to wake him up or remind him of his girlfriend that was waiting patiently back home for him, ready to celebrate a long-awaited and special day.
All traces of the anniversary had slipped his mind as soon as he slid into a deep slumber back at the studio. He trudges around the house and his eyes land on the organized display of snacks on the coffee table. His eyes shift to the blanket and pillow that you two tended to share was all crumpled on the couch. The lightbulb immediately lit in his mind as he put the pieces together and his eyes widen in absolute horror. He had forgotten your anniversary.
“Oh my god, I’m so fucking stupid!” he exclaims, the tone of disbelief in his voice increasing as he realizes his mistake.
“Y/N!” he cries out to you as he runs around the house, searching in all the rooms to see if you were there. He almost forgets the phone that laid in his back pocket until he takes it out, hoping to call you in hopes that you would respond. His phone lights up only to show how indecently late he was, 5:43 a.m, and the amount of missed calls and texts from you, the disappointment and dejection he sensed from you increasing as he read each text you sent to him. His jaw dropping incredulously as he shuts his eyes and takes a deep exhale.
“Fuck, what have I done?” he huffs out, his voice small and full of somber. The fact that he had forgotten a day as important as this was already encompassing his mind but more so, he couldn’t find you and it deeply startled him, he didn’t know where you were and where you could be at this hour. He walks back into the living room where he assumes you had been waiting and his focus shifts to the kitchen where he notices a small notepad and pen along with a torn piece of paper that seemed to have something inscribed on it. He squints as he walks towards the kitchen. He took the paper in his hands as he immediately recognizes your handwriting and his breath hitches as he reads your name. His feet stay rooted to the wooden tile of the kitchen as he freezes there with the paper in his hands. Dumbfounded was an understatement to whatever Jungkook had felt at that moment in time. A tear had involuntarily slid down his cheek. Was this it? Was this the end? Were you going to leave him and never come back? These were only a few out of the heap of questions that were running through his head. All he knew was that he needed to find you. And he needed to fix the mess he had just made.
Similar to you he had bolted out of the house and drove off, unaware of where you actually were but he figured if he had searched for long enough, he would be able to find you.
You had slept deep into the day, finally getting up only because you started to notice the consistent vibrations that came from your bedside table. Naturally, you figured it was Jungkook, you didn’t tell anyone else of your whereabouts since it was so sporadic and you certainly didn’t feel like conversing or informing anyone of your situation. Out of curiosity and the annoying blare of your phone, you decide to see who it is anyway. Much to your surprise, your best friend Seulgi’s beaming smile flashed on your phone screen as you pick up.
“Seulgi, hi,” your voice manages to croak out as you adjust to the sunlight peeking out of your window.
“Y/N, where the hell are you?” she immediately asks, you can basically hear the frown lines etched into her forehead.
You groan into the mic of your phone as you speak back, “Seulgi, I can explain-”
“Jungkook’s been looking for you all night and asking everyone where you are,” she cuts you off.
“Seulgi,” you exhale, trying to suppress your anger, “he forgot our anniversary.”
“Oh my god.” she gasps, “you’re joking.”
“Did he not tell anyone?!” you shriek into the phone.
“No! He just said you left and he was looking for you and he was really scared and he even sounded like he was on the verge of tears and once I said I didn’t know where you were he just hung up!” she rambles on and on.
“Okay, yeah, he forgot and I got mad and I left,” you reveal, voice barely over a whisper.
“Y/N, I don’t blame you,” she reassures you, voice softening, “but, I think you should confront him about this.”
“Yeah, I know. I just needed some time to cool off and think.”
“Well, do you plan on breaking up with him?” she speaks timidly.
“I- I don’t know. I mean, I don’t want to. I want to hear what he has to say.” you stutter, your mind in a complete frenzy.
“Hasn’t he been paying less attention to you these last couple of months?” she asks, “I rarely see you two go out anymore.”
“Yeah cuz we really don’t,” you confirm. “He’s been so focused on his career which I understand but, sometimes it just feels like he doesn’t even acknowledge the fact that he has a girlfriend.”
“Then why haven’t you told him that.”
“I don’t want to seem like the type of girlfriend to hold him back from doing what he loves. He’s invested so much time into his career.”
“Y/N, obviously not telling him how you feel has resulted in this mess. And okay, before you attack me, if he doesn’t have the decency to spend time with his girlfriend every once in a while then he doesn’t deserve your time and energy in the first place,” she advises you.
“I know that Seulgi, that’s all I’ve been thinking about all night.”
“Then talk to him Y/N,” she softly mutters, “for the sake of your relationship with him.”
You hum in agreement but as you’re about to hang up she interjects, “Okay, but just remember, I’ll support whatever decision you make next. I know you’re wise enough to know what you deserve and what’s best for the two of you. Always here for you Y/N.”
“I don’t know where I’d be without you Seulgi. I’ll update you. I’ll head out now.” you smile into the phone.
“You got this Y/N!” she cheers as you hang up.
You had clear intentions on your mind but you couldn’t help but feel anxious and uncertain about what was to happen between you and Jungkook.
jungkook, i’m in sunset central hotel. if you want to talk, come here as soon as you can. Thanks.
Jungkook’s eyes widen to the size of saucers as soon as he saw your name flash onto his screen. He redirects his GPS to the hotel you were at, a 45-minute drive. He didn’t care, he just needed to find you.
-
You waited at the foot of your bed, feeling extremely uneasy about the whole confrontation. Your foot was constantly tapping on the wooden floors, as you played with your hands and glance back at your phone to check the time.
-
Jungkook finally reaches his destination as he surges through the front doors of the hotel, asking the front desk if you were still staying over. The front desk had called you and informed you that someone had come to see you and if it was okay for them to come over. You hesitantly obliged, cowering every time you heard Jungkook answering whatever questions he was required to answer.
It never really registered through Jungkook’s mind that he was supposed to talk to you. He just planned on spilling his heart out and hoping it would be enough for your forgiveness and just being able to hold you in his arms again.
He takes his time getting to your room. His movements are lethargic and hesitant, taking the time to gather his thoughts. He reaches the floor your room is on as he steps out of the elevator and scans the area to find where your room would be. He slowly walks as he sees your room number, he knocks softly at the door, staring at his shoes.
Your head snaps to the sound of his knocks, you take a deep breath as you stand up and slowly creak open the door. You don’t even bother to try to share any eye contact as you widen the door and motion him to come in.
“Y/N,” he begins, eyes still focused on the floor, “I’m,” he exhales, “I’m so sorry.” He slowly tilts his head up, analyzing your body language. Your hands were clasped in front of you as your eyes shifted back and forth to everything but Jungkook. You could feel his stare burning into you but dismissed it.
“Is that-,” you mutter, “is that all you came here to say to me?
“No!” he interrupts, causing you to flinch. His face softens at your reaction, “I- I fell asleep while working on a song and lost track of time.”
Your jaw clenches at his statement as you take a moment to let what he had told you sink in,  “And that makes it all okay?”
“No, of course, it doesn’t-”
“Jungkook, we were supposed to spend this time together with each other. You’re on an actual break for once and you’d still rather dedicate all your time to it instead of spending time with me. All your other members have been going on trips, seeing family, hanging out with friends,” you huff out, glaring at him as he looks at his shoes, “do I not matter to you anymore?”
Your last statement almost made him meltdown right there on the spot. The fact that he had made you believe that he didn’t care about you at all was already bad enough as it is.
He takes a step towards you and looks you straight in the eye, “No, Y/N,” he sighs in exasperation, trying to piece together what he was going to say, “we’ve just been getting so much publicity and gaining so much popularity and fame, I feel like they expect so much from us. And from me. I’m the Golden Maknae, I have to be good at everything and be able to do anything, but in reality, nothing’s working out and I’ve just been stressed as hell and wanting to see you.”
“I’ve never left Jungkook until yesterday, I’ve always been there waiting,” you reveal slowly, “and I really always want to be here for you. Ever since the tour, you stopped contacting me and I just thought you were busy but in the back of my mind, I started thinking that you just didn’t care anymore.”
“But I do, I always did.” he says, taking a step towards you.
“You haven’t proven otherwise, and I don’t want to reach this breaking point just so we can be happy and go through this all over again.” your voice cracks.
“I know, I don’t want that either, but, if this was bothering you for so long, why couldn’t you tell me earlier?”
“Do I really have to remind my own boyfriend to spend time with me?” you scoff as you shake your head in disbelief.
“Y/N, I didn’t mean that, I mean we’ve never had any problems in our relationship up until now, and now that I’m thinking about it, you could’ve told me off and broke up with me a long time ago, but you never told me when you had any problems with me. Yes, I know the things I did were stupid as fuck but Y/N, being in a relationship while balancing my career is still new to me. I’m absolutely clueless and stupid and I need you to guide me so I can be there for you.”
“I-,” you sighed heavily, “I didn’t want to intrude. You’ve worked so hard to get to where you are and I didn’t want to fuck it up.”
“Hey, I’m always willing to give up time for you.” his responds as his eyes soften, “I know it sure as hell may not seem like it, but you shouldn’t prioritize my needs or whatever you think my needs are over yours. Now I’ve just been taking advantage of your leniency. How did I not notice? Fuck, I’m such a dumbass.”
You honestly didn’t know how to respond to that, you knew what you were doing was selfless and you were extremely patient about it all, “I just figured that was the last thing you wanted you know, another thing to worry about on top of your career.”
“I thought about that at first too,” he agreed, biting his lip, “I realized later on that it really shouldn’t matter. It doesn’t matter. I care about you too much to let that happen and the more I got to know you, I realized that, well, you were worth it.”
You could feel his intense glare without even sparing him a glance, “Am I still worth it to you?”
You feel his hand envelop your own as steps towards you once again, “You always will be.”
“You’re making it really hard for me to keep being mad at you,” you huff, tightening your grip around his hand.
He noticed the fact that you were still avoiding eye contact and you remained distant. He tugs on your hand and pulls you close to him, breaking your personal barrier. He pulls you into a warm hug, something you both had craved for so long. The longing and acceptance for one another was mutual, but where were you two supposed to do from there on out?
He loosens his hold on you and pulls away slightly, “Are we okay?”
For the first time that day your eyes met his as you replied, “Yeah, we’re okay.”
Only time would tell.

Note
1-50 for Sarsaparilla?
ohhh my god skfjskdf sarsaparilla has no development whatsoever this is gonna be a blast and a half
1) which faction did they side with (NCR, legion, yes-man, or house)?
she sided with the legion from the time she saw vulpes in nipton bc Romam Armor Look Cool, cured caesar of his tumor & everything, and then just before the battle of hoover dam, assassinated caesar and sided with yes-man. she realized about halfway through her work for caesar that siding with the legion was never going to pay off and decided to Fool Him TM and then take vegas for herself
2) preferred armor?
OOF probably like… leather armor sdkfjsdk i dont know. she wore the tribal raiding armor at the very beginning of the game. she doesnt wear the legion uniform but i imagine her w some Legion Accessories TM like a mark of caesar on her chest or something
3) melee, guns, energy weapons, or unarmed?
melee babey
4) highest skills? secondary skills? lowest skills?
her highest skills are melee, stealth, and medicine (she polishes that up real nice when she realizes caesar has cancer). secondary skills are explosives and lockpick. lowest skills would have to be barter and survival :/
5) SPECIAL stats?
im just guessing at this point bc i dont remember them skdfjkd but i would say ST:5, PE:6, EN:4, CH:4, IN:6, AG:9, LK:9
6) what are their perks?
black widow, cherchez la femme, friend of the night, cannibal, scrounger, ninja
7) favorite companions? least favorite companions?
literally no one will hang out w her bc she’s legion ksdfjsd. she takes boone as a companion at the very beginning of the game and then she has to kill him. her fave would probably be cass, or raul, who is the Only Mf who will talk to her
8) any romantic partners? how do these relationships begin and end? are they healthy?
she thinks vulpes is hot for 0.2 seconds but she also thinks that about violet, gloria van graff, and some securitrons so i wouldnt worry about it
9) gender / sexuality / ethnicity / species / etc.?
cis female / bi / asian / human ((i just realized all my couriers are cis even though im trans as hell sdkfjsdkfsdj yikes))
10) where were they born/raised? when/why did they leave?
she doesn’t remember anything from b4 the bullet but she’s from new reno. she left because it’s new reno.
11) when, why and how did they become a courier? how long did they remain a courier before benny shot them?
she needed work after she left home and delivering packages didn’t seem terrible. she did it for like 2 years max before she got shot
12) how did the bullet affect them?
took out most of her memories (including her name) and sort of scrambled her good sense. she doesn’t feel very much fear, restraint, or remorse anymore, which is why she’s been doing All This recently
13) how did they deal with benny?
seduced him, slept with him, killed him in his sleep, and took his roomba yes-man
14) what’s their reputation with the ncr / the legion?
the ncr - fucking horrible she can barely go on the strip sdjfskdsd. pile body upon body babey. / the legion - superb. sparkling. if she weren’t a woman they’d even stop insulting her
15) what do the people in freeside think of them? the followers, the kings, the garrets, the van graffs?
the followers aren’t a fan of her because of all that legion business. the kings like her because she takes care of rex. the garrets generally dislike her. the van graffs like her a lot because she let them kill cass & did all their quests
16) what’s their reputation with goodsprings / novac / primm? (i know primm reputation was cut from the game but like let’s pretend for a minute sdkfjd)
goodsprings: bad bc she sided with the powder gangers kdsfjs / novac: she did come fly with me so its lookin alright! / primm: very mixed bc she’s pro-powder ganger but she also got them a new sheriff (meyer)
17) what’s their reputation with the khans / the brotherhood / the boomers / the powder gangers?
the khans: she’s a Legion Ambassador… a shining monument of their new allies… Excellent and yet they know fuckall about her / bos: well she did blow up that whole bunker. / boomers: i dont remember / powder gangers: as i mentioned before she sided with them at goodsprings and made meyer a sheriff so they like her a lot. boxcars is happy to see her
18) what do the people on the strip think of them? the omertas, the white gloves, the chairmen, ncr military police, mr. house? do the gamblers like them?
the omertas: she did cachino’s quest so it’s pretty good / white gloves: idolized / chairmen: hey that’s the fink that killed benny / ncrmp: BAD / mr house: well considering the fact that she killed him, not excellent
19) what is their motive for taking vegas?
literally just ‘she wants to’. the whole point of this courier was that she’s a no rules run, she’s lost a lot after the bullet scrambled her brain and she’s literally just doing whatever she wants to do
20) do they have a theme song?
no :(
21) what do they look like? how tall are they? are they attractive? any piercings, tattoos, scars?
she has black hair in the “blast back” style. pretty short, like 5′4″. no piercings or tattoos (but she probably gets a legion brand at some point w like the mars symbol or something). there’s of course a bullet scar on her head, and a few around her arms and torso.
22) how old are they? do they know their birthday? if so, what’s their sign?
she’s in her early-mid twenties, very young. im not sure if she remembers her bday (probs not) but she’s a Sagittarius
23) do they speak any languages other than english?
god no. she doesnt even try to learn latin jhjhkjgfkj she pronounces all of it wrong and caesar’s like please shut up,
24) can they read, write, do math, sing? did they ever receive an education?
she went to school in new reno so she can do all that. maybe not sing.
25) what were their parents like? are they still on good terms with their parents?
i honestly havent given it much thought. her parents were probably Just Okay TM. she doesn’t remember them.
26) what’s their d&d alignment? (bolded bc i really like that one ksdjfksd)
chaotic neutral, leaning into chaotic evil.
27) how’s their karma?
not great
28) how do they feel about killing people? do they try to avoid it?
like i said, the bullet messed w her remorse a lot, so it doesn’t particularly bother her anymore.
29) do they take chems? if yes, when and which ones?
yes, sometimes! usually mentats, buffout, med-x, or psycho.
30) do they gamble? where? is their luck good?
she likes to gamble. usually at the ultra-luxe. her luck is pretty good!
31) where do they usually sleep? do they have more than one home location? do they live with any other people?
she usually stays in the lucky 38, in her hotel room in novac, or in the tent Big C TM hooked her up with at the fort. if it comes to it she’ll sleep in the ncrcf. no one else really lives in her 38 save for the securitrons
32) what are their favorite weapons? where did they get these weapons?
her caesar’s fall collection legion-brand machete babeyyyy, one n only! she’ll also use a pistol (a light shining in darkness most of the time since u know she sides w joshua graham) or a police baton if that’s appropriate
33) do they flirt a lot? is it well-received?
yes she does and no it isnt! she licked vulpes. just. right on his visibly ugly face. one time she tried to climb yes-man
34) do they goof around a lot? do other people find it funny or do they just entertain themselves?
once again yes she does and no they do not! she’s doin it all for her, baby. chaotic neutral here we go
35) what do their companions think of them? are they close? have they done any companion quests?
the companions,, obviously dont think very well of her most of the time bc she’s legion. cass thinks she’s a Real Wild Card and respects her for that at first. raul doesn’t like her very much but he’ll still travel with her from time to time just to see what she Does TM.
36) why did you create them?
i wanted to do a no rules run! like i thought it would be cool to just. do the craziest things i could think of in fnv and do it all with one courier. and thus sarsaparilla was born
37) do they draw, paint, play any instruments?
hell no
38) how do they deal with injuries? do they use stimpaks, healing powder, med-x? does a companion help them? can they bear a lot of pain, or do they need to attend to injuries immediately? when they do have to see a doctor, do they have a preferred doctor, or do they just see anyone?
she uses all 3 depending on how bad the wound is. for minor wounds she uses healing powder because she has an abundance of it from the legion, but since she has fairly low endurance she often just has to use stimpaks & med-x. she’s not very tolerant to pain all of the time? but if she has a lot of adrenaline (which she comes by very easily) she can all but ignore it entirely. she doesnt have a preferred doctor
39) have they ever been irradiated? how did they deal with it? did it have lasting effects?
probably a few times but she just threw up and then took a bunch of rad-away and ended up fine. she’s never been damaged by radiation permanently
40) in conversation, are they kind? gentle? sarcastic? rude? do they speak warmly and openly with people, or are they more guarded? do they talk a lot?
she’s somewhat talkative, she mostly says whatever pops into her head whenever it comes to mind so her talking is just. a big mess of Thoughts She Had. she likes making a lot of jokes that are mostly for her
41) do they like long journeys through the mojave, or do they prefer to travel more quickly? do they prefer using roads or travelling through the deep desert?
she likes to travel quickly. no time to waste! she’s almost always using the roads
42) name a random fact about your courier.
she thinks it’s really funny to blow vulpes’s cover whenever she sees him undercover on the strip & she almost gets killed every single time. oh holy shit it’s vulpes! vulpes inculta! spelled v-u-l-p– oh my god its the ncr mp quick vulpes take your dick out in this gift shop
43) do they watch movie holotapes? what are their favorites? least favorites?
yes but shes literally only seen blazing saddles, gladiator, and we bought a zoo
44) what do they do with the lucky 38? do they like being there? do they leave their companions there? if they’re a yes-man courier, do they open it back up as a casino?
she doesn’t leave companions there too often, like i said. she likes it pretty well bc of the robots and the hot water? but i think that she really prefers staying in hotels except for special occasions. she doesnt open it back up bc yes-man kills her sldkfjds great transition
45) what do they do after hoover dam?
yes-man says fuck work and just absolutely murders her. hes like ok enough of this and finds a new human to do what he needs done skdfjksd
46) how do they die? how is their death received, by the mojave and by their companions?
yes-man fucking KILLS her ass! the mojave takes a great big breath of relief knowing they wont have to watch her shenanigans anymore skdjfds
47) what are their vices? are they an alcoholic, a thief, a hoarder?
oh boy literally all of them. she definitely steals a lot but thats literally just. a part of her “do whatever you want” complex that Is TM her greatest vice
48) can they cook, and if so, what do they cook? what are their favorite & least favorite foods?
she absolutely cannot. she likes pizza from the tops dskfjkds
49) did they kill caesar? vulpes inculta? what about prominent ncr figures, like kimball and colonel hsu?
yes she did kill caesar! her securitrons killed vulpes at hoover dam and she was power-tripping so hard she didn’t realize they’d already gotten to him. she probably didnt think about him again before she died. she didnt assassinate kimball herself but she definitely assisted in making the assassination go smoothly, and im sure her robots got to hsu sometime before she had yes-man throw oliver off the dam skdjfskd
50) what’s their happiest memory?
not to be fake deep but all this shit she does obviously causes more adrenaline than happiness. you could say that it’s when yes-man threw oliver off the dam, because that was her most exhilarating moment, or you could say that it was when she woke up in goodsprings, because it was the last time she was calm and being taken care of.
thank u so much if u read all this and thank you for sending me this ask. it took a long time but its a good exercise like i said skdfjsdf. send me more if these if yall have the heart, maybe not a whole 1-50 but like ! & please reblog my fnv courier questions post because i do think its nice, bye

Loose Feathers and Angel Wings
Chapter: 1/1 Fandom: Haikyuu!! Rating: G Characters: Akaashi Keiji, Bokuto Koutarou, Konoha Akinori Pairing: Bokuaka Word Count: 5.9k
Summary:
“Who are you?”
The boy's eyes go wide, pupils shrinking almost comically. He backs up into the couch, getting as far away from Akaashi as he can. “Hey hey hey let’s calm down a little!” he says, waving his hands in surrender. As he waves his hands, something moves behind his back. Feathers peak out, pale brown feathers streaked with dark streaks. The boy has wings.
“Uh…oh!” He seems to realize that Akaashi is staring at his wings. “My name is Bokuto, and I, uh - I’m your guardian angel!”
((happpy bday @ask-cosplayukraine-please!!! enjoy this little gift from me to you~))

Quiet. The evening was unusually quiet. There was no roar of tires from traffic, no shouting from their neighbors, no weird crashes from the lab down the street, no barking dogs, no hoo-ing of the owls that scavenged their street at night. Not even the whir of air conditioning provided any white noise.
Akaashi hates it. Everything had been quiet lately, too quiet, and it makes him want to scream.
Ding. Akaashi jumps. The sound echoes through the house like a shout. Akaashi follows the smell of microwaveable meal into the kitchen and takes his dinner out of the microwave. He glances at the clock. 9:46. His mom said she would be home more than an hour ago, but that was fine. He would have been more surprised if she came home when she said she would.
He eats his dinner in silence, the only noise coming from the slurp of ramen and the clack of his chopsticks against the bowl. It’s unnerving. Should he turn on music? Or even a fan? Anything to cover up the oppressing, isolating silence.
Screeeeeeeak click. Pat pat pat.
Akaashi freezes. Someone just came through the back door. No one ever came through the back door.
Pat pat - thump.
Ignoring the pounding of his heart, Akaashi grabs the first thing he heavy thing sees, an unwashed wok sitting on the stove. He abandons his food and walks into the living room, holding the wok tight in his fist.
Should he call someone? He should probably call someone instead of handling this on his own, but he’s already up and he’s got a pan and he needs to figure out where that sound is coming from.
Akaashi tiptoes toward the living room, careful not to make a sound on the tiles. He grips the handle tighter and peeks around the wall.
There, sitting on the black leather couch, is a boy. He’s just...just sitting there, mouth slightly open, looking around like a child in a candy shop. Streaked hair flops in front of his face, nearly obscuring his golden yellow eyes. They dart around all around the room, looking up at the ceiling and to the left out the door and to the left at the fireplace and to the right at the painting of the bird and right at him.
Shit.
“AHHHH!” the boy screams, the sound shaking Akaashi’s ear drums. He leaps up two feet in the air and falls back into the couch.
Now that he’s been found out, Akaashi jumps around the corner and stands in front of the boy, pointing the pan in his face.
“What are you doing here?” Akaashi demands. He swings the pan again and hopes he looks more intimidating than he feels.
Akaashi takes a step back as they grow and extend outward. The boy has wings.
Akaashi lowers the wok in shock. “What are you…?”
“Uh…oh!” He seems to realize that Akaashi’s staring at his wings. He stands up and extends them out. They’re enormous, wingtips touching either wall, entirely blocking the other side of the room. Deep brown stripes dash across big pale feathers, mottled with light brown and dark brown and grey and white. The boy points a thumb at his chest. “My name is Bokuto, and I - I’m your guardian angel!”
This is...too much. Just a minute ago he’d been complaining about the quiet and now his mind was screaming with enough thoughts to drown out any silence.
“Guardian...angel?”
Bokuto nods like a bobble head. “Yep, I’m here to, to protect you and stuff! From the bad things. Speaking of bad things, there will probably be some bad things knocking on your door like really soon, so you probably shouldn’t answer you door at all.”
“What.”
“Yeah, how about you show me your room?” Bokuto says. He leaps off the couch, floating down like - well, like an angel.  “We can get acquainted and - do you have any windows? Because if you do we should close those, and close the curtains or blinds or whatever. Because, uh, intimacy.”
Akaashi nods. He figures the best thing to do at this point is just go with it. As soon as Bokuto turns around, he can knock him out with the pan and figure out what the hell is going on.
But the moment Bokuto turns around, he flaps his wings and knocks half a dozen frames off the wall. They crash to the ground at the same time Bokuto lands halfway up the stairs.
“Oops.” Bokuto looks down at the frames dotting the stairs, brows twisted with guilt. “Sorry about that, uh…what was your name again?”
Akaashi follows him up the stairs, picking up and rehanging pictures as he goes. There’s one of his mom and dad on their wedding day, then one from Akaashi as a baby, wrapped in a pink blanket. His first day of preschool, back when his hair was long enough for pigtails. There’s one with his friends from middle school. All of them ended up going to a different high school. Akaashi hasn’t spoken to them in months.
“You’re my guardian angel, but you don’t know my name?” Akaashi asks. He supposed not knowing is better than deadnaming him.
“Uh.” Bokuto just looks at him blankly. “We, uh, we guardian angels are only given a location, so, you know, they told me to come here and I did so here I am! And now that I’m here you can tell me your name, please?”
This situation is so absurd Akaashi wants to break out in laughter. Instead, he says, “Akaashi. Akaashi Keiji.”
“Nice to meet you, Akaashi,” Bokuto says with a bow. “Hey, I’ll race you up the stairs!"
Before Akaashi can agree, Bokuto bolts up the stairs and down the hallway. Akaashi follows a bit slower. A moment later, Bokuto comes sprinting back. “Which one’s your room?”
Akaashi reaches the top of the stairs, and Bokuto follows him as he pushes open the first door on the left. Bokuto pushes past him inside. This is weird.
“Whoa, your room is so...so empty!” Bokuto isn't wrong, but he could have said it more tactfully. On the left is a his futon, and on the right is his desk, perfectly neat and organized. The only decorations he has are two framed pictures on his desk, one of him and his parents, and the other of his volleyball team from last year. Maybe if he had more friends, there would be more pictures.
Knock knock knock.
Bokuto’s wings snap back to his sides and he freezes, still as a statue.
Akaashi could go back downstairs and answer the door. But his gut tells him he’d be putting Bokuto in danger. And despite the fact that Bokuto had broken into his home, and was evidently some freak of nature, Akaashi didn’t want him to have to suffer just because he was a little different.
Knock knock knock.
Bokuto’s throat protrudes as he gulps. Akaashi takes a deep breath, puts a finger to his lips. He then tiptoes past Bokuto to silently closes his door. They wait a few minutes for the knocking to return, but the sound ceases.
“I think it’s safe to talk now,” Akaashi says.
Bokuto collapses face first onto Akaashi’s bed. “Oh thank god,” he says. “Hey ‘Kaashi, uh, I had a long light down here from...guardian angel heaven, and I’m kind of tired, so would it be okay if I spent the night here? I’ll sleep on the floor, and I’ll be a good guest, I promise.”
Bokuto looks at him with wide eyes. Akaashi realized he missed his chance to knock Bokuto out a long time ago.
“Please please please please?”
This isn’t just weird, it’s insane.
“Fine.” Akaashi pulls an extra blanket and pillow out of his closet. Bokuto curls up on them like a cat, and within minutes, he’s asleep.
Akaashi gets ready for bed, careful to step around the sleeping angel. He tucks himself into bed, and exhaustion catches up with him the moment his head hits the pillow. Bokuto’s snores aren’t the most pleasant thing in the world, but at least they’re more comforting than silence.
Sun peaks in through his blinds and gently wakes him up. He blinks his eyes open, and comes nose to nose with another face.
Akaashi scrambles backward. Bokuto lies on the very edge of the blanket Akaashi had set up for him last night, curled up in a tight ball. His wings sprawl out behind him, taking up most of the floor space in Akaashi’s room. They flutter slightly with the rise and fall of his chest.
Akaashi sits cross-legged on his bed, watching Bokuto as his heart starts to calm down. His eyebrows are knitted together, and his breathing is hurried.
“...m’not them…’ll get it, I promise…”
Akaashi flinches at the sound of Bokuto’s mumbling. But no, he’s not up yet - His eyes flicker slightly, but he doesn’t wake up. He’s just sleep talking.
With another mumble Akaashi can’t decipher, he rolls on his other side, wings flopping over with him. Akaashi barely has time to register what’s happening before a large, winged shadow arcs over his head.
...Shit.
The wings flop down on him and knock him over. He’s surrounded in a nest of feathers, sticking up his sleeves and down the collar of his shirt, in his nose, in his mouth.
“Oh my gosh I’m so sorry!” Bokuto leaps up, freeing Akaashi from the feathery prison. As soon as they’re there, they’re gone.
Akaashi sits up and spits a few downy feathers out of his mouth.
“It won’t happen again I’m so sorry!”
“It’s...fine.”
The greater issue here was what to do with Bokuto now. Akaashi has school today. He doesn’t want to kick Bokuto out after what happened last night, but he doesn’t want to leave some stranger alone at his house, either.
“Hey ‘Kaashi, want me to walk to school with you?”
“Is it safe?” Akaashi asks. “What if other people see you?”
Bokuto shrugs. “They’ll just think we’re friends, probably.”
That’s not what I meant.
It might be nice to walk to school with someone, though. All his teammates live in the opposite direction of him, and no one else is up this early in the morning, or that late after evening practice. “I suppose you could…”
Bokuto lets out a whoop. Akaashi hopes his parents aren’t home. And he hopes he’s not making the wrong decision by letting Bokuto come with him.
Bokuto’s arm bumps his as they walk to school.
“You’ll have to tell me all about guardian angels, now that you’re here,” Akaashi says.
Bokuto’s pupils go as wide as cherries. Then he blinks and laughs. “Yeah, yeah yeah of course, because. I’m a guardian angel so I definitely know all about being an angel and stuff.”
Akaashi bites back a grin.
“Does everyone get a guardian angel?”
Bokuto shakes his head. “Nope. Only special people like you.”
“Oh? And what makes me special?”
“Only the kindest, smartest, and courageous people get guardian angels!”
Akaashi doesn't feel very kind, or smart, or courageous, but he doesn't contradict Bokuto. “If I’m so perfect, why do I need a guardian angel?”
“Well, you see…” Bokuto rubs his hand along the back of his neck. Then he snaps his fingers. “I can’t tell you, actually! It’s your job to figure out why I’m here. And once you figure that out, that’s when I go away!”
“Is that so?”
“It is so, I swear!”
“I guess you’ll be here for awhile, because I have no idea why you’re here.”
“Oh thank god.”
Somehow, it becomes a routine. Bokuto walks Akaashi to school, disappears for a few hours, walks him back home, and spends the night there. For once, Akaashi is glad his parents are never home. A second teenager, one with wings, would be a lot harder to hide from them.
It’s different, having Bokuto around. The first few days were exhausting, between feeding him and talking with him and making sure he didn’t break anything. But once they slipped into a pattern, when Bokuto learned his way around the house and figured out how to microwave ramen himself, it was kind of nice. It was comforting to have someone to walk home with. He liked having another’s presence in the house. In a sense, Bokuto really was protecting him. He warded away the oppressive silence and lonely nights, and replaced it with laughter and warmth and feathers.
Bokuto’s wings lie sprawled across the couch like a blanket, curled up at the ends like fingers waving at him to come closer. Akaashi sits on the floor, hunched over the coffee table with his homework sprawled out before him. From here, they look thin; not as thin as paper, but much too thin to ever hold anything up.
Akaashi knows it’s probably rude, but he can’t deny his curiosity.
“Bokuto-san, can I touch your wings?”
Bokuto doesn’t look at him. Akaashi notices this because Bokuto is always looking at him, with unblinking yellow eyes, like an actual owl. Now, he stares at his feet. Did he overstep a boundary? They already slept in the same room and had seen each other undress. Perhaps it was a guardian angel thing.
Right when Akaashi’s sure he’s going to say no, Bokuto opens his mouth. Then closes it. And opens it again. “Um. Okay.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah.” Bokuto nods. “You’re my human. I trust you.”
Akaashi doesn’t know how he can already trust him when they’ve only known each other for a couple of weeks, but he doesn’t question it.
Bokuto pokes his wing out so that the tip just reaches Akaashi. He runs his hand over the top ridge of his wing, stroking the large brown primary feathers. Moving in closer, he tangles his fingers into the secondaries, across the stripes of brown across beige, and then even closer, through the softer auxiliary feathers by Bokuto’s side. “So this is what an angel’s wings feel like.”
Akaashi looks up and meets Bokuto’s eye. His cheeks are bright red. Bokuto looks away and gulps. Akaashi watches his throat bob as he swallows. “Yup. Yeah. Angel’s wings. Those are the kind of wings I have.”
“I thought they’d be softer.”
“‘Kaashi!”
“You’ve been eating a lot, Keiji.”
Akaashi stops chewing. His chopsticks hover above his bowl. “Yes.”
It’s the first time he’s seen his father in weeks, and he’s caught him in a lie. Hiding Bokuto from his parents hasn’t been easy. Even though Bokuto leaves during the day, at night when he comes back he’s always hungry, so Akaashi has been making a late dinner for two. Last week when his mom walked in on his room, and saw the two futons, Akaashi had to make up some excuse about how a friend had visited last night. Now he puts the extra futon away during the day, just in case.
Caring for Bokuto was like caring for a very large, very loud, and very feathery dog. But Akaashi had always been a dog person.
"Wonder what brought this on..." his father wonders.
Akaashi keeps his head down, not daring to look his father in the eye. Was this it? Was this how his secret would finally be discovered? After everything he'd done to keep Bokuto a secret, would it end because of food?
“Finally going through that growth spurt, I see.”
Akaashi nearly sighs in relief. “Yes. I am growing...indeed.”
“Akaashiiiiiiiiii I need to stretch my wings!” Bokuto demands one day.
Akaashi's having none of it. He tells Bokuto there's no way it's safe to go out in a public place with his wings out, but Bokuto whines and gives him puppy eyes and somehow Akaashi finds himself giving.
And that's how they ended up at the park at midnight.
He feels uncomfortable being out in public like this. What if someone saw them? What if they took pictures or reported them? Bokuto’s secret would be revealed to the world, and someone would probably come to take him away. Akaashi knows it's selfish but he doesn't want that to happen.
They stand under a streetlight, shivering in the cold. “Aren’t you going to fly or something?” Akaashi asks.
Bokuto’s shoulders droop. “I...I uh. I actually can’t fly…”
“Oh.” What about those times when you fluttered around the house? Akaashi wants to ask him. But he supposes that’s not really flying. More like gliding.
That’s what Bokuto does now. He runs across the open field, wings trailing in a streamline behind him, then jumps up into the air and spreads his wings like a fan, gliding on them for several feet before tumbling to the ground. Akaashi watches from a bench as Bokuto runs - glides? - laps around the park. Sometimes he tries to flap his wings, but he never gets more than ten feet in the air before plunging back down. Akaashi wraps his arms around himself to try and combat the cold.
Eventually, Bokuto comes jogging back to him, glistening with sweat, feathers in his hair.
“Hey Akaashi, I was thinking before we go home we could - ”
“N-n-no.” After sitting out here for so long, Akaashi’s fingertips have turned purple. “We are g-going home now.”
Bokuto cocks his head. “Are you cold Akash?”
Instead of answer, Akaashi stands up and pushes past Bokuto. He’s going home, whether Bokuto wants to or not.
“Wait!” Bokuto jogs after him, and wraps a hand around his waist. Suddenly Akaashi feels a warm, heavy weight on his shoulders. Feathers brush his arms as Bokuto envelopes him under his wings like a mother hen.
"Better?" Bokuto asks.
"...yeah," Akaashi mumbles. It feels like he put on a warm winter coat. "C'mon...let's go home."
Bokuto nods, and they head back to Akaashi's house, carefully watching for any passersby. His fingers lay against Akaashi's side, just under the bottom of his binder, and when Akaashi shivers this time, it’s not from the cold.
Akaashi sees him at the volleyball tournament - the outsider on the other team. He sits on the bench away from the rest of Nekoma, nose in a video game, face hidden in a forrest of bleached hair. If Bokuto were here, he would hound on the outsider immediately. Akaashi realized the Bokuto liked when people got along, he wanted everyone to find their place and fit in. Bokuto wouldn't be afraid to make friends.
During a break, Akaashi sits down next to him.
"What are you playing?" he asks.
For a moment, the outsider doesn't respond. Maybe Akaashi shouldn't have come over here, he shouldn't have started talking to a total stranger, he probably looks like an idiot now, this wasn't how you made friends, was it -
"Final Haikyuu Quest," the outsider says at a whisper.
"Oh. I haven't played that before," Akaashi says. Akaashi breaks past the drawbridge that threatens to close his throat shut. "Can I watch?" he forces himself to ask.
"Sure."
The break is over quickly, but Akaashi sees the outsider at the next match, and this time, the other boy says hi to him first. He introduces himself as Kenma. Akaashi thinks he's made a new friend.
Still sizzling loudly, Akaashi takes the plastic bowl out of the microwave.
“Hey 'kaashi? Why aren’t your parents ever home?”
He slams the bowl in front of Bokuto. “You’re my guardian angel, shouldn’t you know why?” Akaashi snaps. He immediately regrets it. When it comes to talking about his parents, he has a short fuse.
“I’m sorry,” Akaashi says. “They both work a lot. So they don’t have time for me. I know they’re busy but I - I wish they were...I don't know, more supportive...?”
"Oh." Bokuto pushes pieces of soggy pork around in his bowl. "That must be lonely."
Akaashi remembers the night, more than a month ago, now, that Bokuto had glided into his life. He remembers how lonely the silence had been before Bokuto came crashing in.
"It sucks that they have to work all the time," Bokuto continues. "And it must be hard, having to care for yourself all alone. I mean, you're not even an adult yet!"
“Maybe that’s why you were sent here,” Akaashi says. “To look after me, since my parents don’t.”
Bokuto's wings drooping onto the ground. “Maybe…”
Akaashi shrugs. “I don’t know that for sure, though. So you can’t leave yet.”
Bokuto looks up and grins. “Nope, you’re still stuck with me!”
Sometimes Akaashi asks himself why he’s doing this. He’s sure that from an outside perspective, his decisions seem absurb. But the thing is, this whole situation is absurd. Akaashi is dealing with this in a rational way, or so he tells himself.
Why is he doing this? Sometimes Akaashi forgets, but then he sees Bokuto's smile and feels his hand in his and he remembers why.
It’s one of those rare weekends when both his parents are home. Bokuto’s tucked away in his room, probably playing the new DS game he’d stolen from Kenma. Meanwhile, Akaashi’s stuck down here for a family dinner.
He pokes his stir fry, sliding a carrot slice around the edge of his bowl.
Knock knock knock.
“Keiji, go get the door,” his mom says.
Happy for an excuse to leave the table, Akaashi walks to the front door and opens it up.
There’s a boy about his age standing there, with straw colored hair hanging in his face. Around his shoulders is a big puffy white coat, which hardly seems appropriate for the late summer heat. Just over his shoulder on the other side of the street is a van labeled VOLAR LABORATORY. Something feels off about the situation, so Akaashi keeps his lips pursed tight.
“Hi,” the boy says. “My name is...Jack. I’m looking for my friend.”
Akaashi wants to shut the door in his face, but he’s afraid that would be suspicious. “A friend?”
“Yeah.” He looks bored. “I don’t have a picture, but he’s about this tall - ” Jack holds his hand a couple of inches higher than himself, “ - and he’s got weird hair that makes him look like a zebra. And golden brown eyes.”
“That’s an interesting appearance,” Akaashi says.
“Yeah. Should be pretty easy to spot. Have you seen him?”
Akaashi shakes his head. “I think I would remember someone like that.”
Jack snorts. “Yeah. Well, thanks anyway.” He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a card. A number scribbled in blue pen on the back. He hands it to Akaashi. “Let me know if you see him.”
Akaashi takes the card reluctantly. “Okay. Good luck finding him.”
Jack’s already walking away. He waves up a hand in thanks.
Akaashi closes the door behind him.
“Who was that?” his mom asks.
“Salesperson,” Akaashi says.
He flips the card over in his hand. On the front is a logo for VOLAR LABORATORY.
“Hey Akaashi, I have something to tell you…” Bokuto’s shoulders sway back and forth, wings drooping guiltily.
“What is it, Bokuto-san?”
“I’m not really a guardian angel.”
“I know," he says, not the slightest bit phased.
Bokuto wraps a wing around himself, and starts playing with his primary feathers. “Yeah, I figured you would have realized by now. I’m not the best liar. But I felt bad about it anyway, so. I wanted to tell the truth.”
Now this is surprising. Akaashi thought of Bokuto as a loveable idiot, but if he knew Akaashi never believed his lie, and that he was a bad liar in the first place, he was much more self-aware and better at reading people than he thought. But even more surprising was that he had wanted to tell the truth.
“‘Kaashi? Please say something so that I know I didn’t mess up.”
“I’m just a little surprised,” Akaashi says. “It’s just...how did you know you could trust me? With the truth, I mean. I could just kick you out now.”
Bokuto cocks his head, an impish grin spreading across his lips. “That’s a trick question. You knew all along, so since you didn’t kick me out before, you’d have no reason to kick me out now.”
Akaashi fidgets with the hem of his shirt. “Then why tell me at all? I didn’t think...why did you tell me the truth?”
Bokuto looks up at the ceiling. “Well, I like you a lot, and I felt bad lying to someone I care about.”
He says it so plainly, like talking about the weather. Today it is cold. I think it will rain tomorrow. I like you. I care about you.
Bokuto scooches closer to him. He sets a hand on his thigh and waves the other in his face, big golden eyes staring at him in concern. “Akaashi? Are you okay? Is it too hot? Cuz your face is really red.”
Akaashi slinks out from Bokuto and pushes himself off the bed. “I...am fine,” he says, even though he’s not fine at all.
Akaashi told him not to come. He told him it was dangerous, that he shouldn’t be here, but there he was in the stands, wearing one of Akaashi’s big winter coats in the height summer.
He’s waving down at the court to Akaashi. Akaashi glares it him. I told you not to come! he tries to say with his eyes.
Bokuto ducks down, dejected.
Good. That will teach you a lesson.
But Bokuto’s already here, and he’s watching, and Akaashi feels an extra pressure to do well. Bokuto thinks he’s a brilliant setter and Akaashi wants to live up to that.
Akaashi has never focused more on a game than this one. He refuses to even look at the stands until after the first set, knowing that if he caught Bokuto’s eye, the nerves of steel he built up would fail him.
They win the first set by a single point. Akaashi looks up into the stands - but Bokuto isn’t there.
Instinctively, he knows something’s wrong. He has to find Bokuto.
“I’m sick and going to throw up,” he tells his coach. “Can I go to the nurse’s office?”
His coach’s eyes widen and then he nods rapidly. “Of course, how about you take Sarukui with - ”
“That won’t be necessary,” Akaashi says as he takes off in the other direction.
He runs from the gym and into the main building, jogging through the hallways and peaking into classrooms. Thank god this is a home game, and Akaashi knows the campus. Where could Bokuto be? He couldn’t have disappeared that long ago, and where would he go? Akaashi can only think of one reason why he’d leave. That reason is written on the back of a business card tucked deep in Akaashi's sports bag.
“ - orry, you know how they are.”
That voice - Akaashi recognizes that voice. He stops in front of the door to a classroom that's creaked open an inch. He tip toes closer and peers inside. It’s that kid, Jack, the one who’d knocked on his door the other day. And he’s -
“Please, Konoha, just this once, you know what they’ll do it they catch me!”
Akaashi yanks the door open races into the room. “Bokuto!”
Bokuto stands opposite of Jack, or whatever his name is, winter coat discarded on the floor, wings up and raised. Not-Jack, too, has pale brown wings sprouting from his back.
Bokuto's brows rise when Akaashi comes to his side. “Akaashi! But - your game - ”
“What’s going on?” Akaashi demands.
Not-Jack points at Bokuto. “This guy ran away from the lab and put us all in danger. What would you have done if you were discovered, Bo?”
“They were going to cut off my wings!” Bokuto cries. “Konoha, they said if they didn’t work they would cut them off and I didn’t want - I couldn’t let them do that!”
Konoha’s wings droop. “Wait...you still can’t fly?”
Bokuto doesn’t answer.
"Do you think...do you really think they'd cut your wings off?"
Silence.
Konoha winces. “Sorry. I - I didn't know. They, uh, they’ve already surrounded the school.”
It only takes a moment for Akaashi to connect the dots - weird bird people, Volar Labs, the threat of becoming wingless. Bokuto's in danger. Glaring at Konoha, Akaashi grabs Bokuto's hand. “Come on, let’s go.”
“‘Kash - ”
“I said let’s go!”
They race out of the room and bound up the stairs, Akaashi dragging Bokuto behind him. Konoha doesn't follow, but they only make it to the second floor when the sound of footsteps pounds behind them.
“Oh no, oh no no no they’re catching up - ”
“Shut up and keep running!”
Akaashi ignores his screaming muscles as they fly up the stairs. They climb higher and higher until they reach the roof. Akaashi shoves him through the doorway and shuts the door behind them. They move a couple of stray boxes and bricks in front of the door to prevent anyone from getting through.
Bokuto's eyes dart back and forth across the barren roof. "Wait, this is a dead end!"
"No it's not." Akaashi grabs Bokuto's shoulders and looks him in the eye. "You have to fly us off."
Bokuto blinks at him owlishly. "Fly...?"
Akaashi nods. "Fly."
He drags him ever to the edge of the building, ignoring Bokuto's protests. "Wait wait wait! I've never flown before and if I try now I'll probably fail and then we'll both die - "
BAM!
The lab's security must have caught up with them. Akaashi has no idea how long that door will hold. Which means this has to happen quickly. "You can do it. It's just like gliding." Akaashi points to the rooftop of the library the next building over. "See that? We're just gliding from up here to down there."
BAM!
Bokuto shakes his head furiously, tears are forming in his eyes and his face is blotching red. "I can't, I can't do it - "
"Yes you can! You have to!"
SLAM!
The door the rooftop burst open and a squad of people in black come rushing out.
Akaashi's tugged up by his armpits and before he can blink, he's falling off the building. His heart drops to his stomach as the ground gets closer and close. Akaashi squeezes his eyes shut. Is this the end? Was he wrong to place his faith in Bokuto?
Snap!
He stops falling. Supported by Bokuto's capable hands, he's lifted into the air, rising with the flap of Bokuto's wings.
"Akaashi! 'kaashi I'm flying! I did it! I'm doing it!" Bokuto shouts. Akaashi can barely hear him with the wind whistles in his ears. He looks up. There are fireworks in Akaashi's stomach. Bokuto looks so majestic with the wind rustling his hair, wings spread wide and strong. He looks like he belongs in the sky.
The library's rooftop comes up in an instant. Bokuto drops him to the ground first. Akaashi lands on his feet but tumbles over and rolls to a stop. He watches as Bokuto tries to land. He ends up tripping on the ground and somersaulting into a wall. Ever resilient, Bokuto immediately jumps back up feet and comes running toward Akaashi.
"Oh my god oh my god are you okay?" He helps Akaashi to his feet, and Akaashi immediaely envelopes him in a hug.
"That was amazing," he says into Bokuto's neck. He can feel him shudder beneath him, whether from excitement or relief, Akaashi can't tell.
“So you can fly!”
They both whip around to the sound of the voice. There on the rooftop of the school are a half dozen people in back, Konoha, and a man in a tweed suit - the one who had just yelled to them. Going off his outfit and the look of disgust on Bokuto's face, Akaashi guesses he's the one in charge.
“You don’t have to keep running!" he shouts down to them. "We don’t have to clip your wings if you can fly!”
“No!” Bokuto yells back. "I'm not going to be a part of your stupid experiment anymore!"
The man's face turns cherry red. "Bokuto Koutarou, get back here right now, or, or - " He whips around and points a finger at Konoha. "Go after him!"
Konoha looks back and forth between the man and Bokuto. Akaashi holds his breath as he waits for Konoha's answer.
He shakes his head no.
The man in the suit fumes. He shouts some order at his team that Akaashi can't quite make it.
Akaashi turns back to his Bokuto "Bokuto, we need to - "
Two wide hands cradle his cheeks between them. Green eyes meet gold. Bokuto gives him the saddest smile Akaashi has ever seen. "I need to go, 'Kash."
Tears prickle in his eyes. He knows that's the only rational choice, but Akaashi is selfish. He doesn't want to let Bokuto go. "But - but you were supposed to be my guardian angel - "
Bokuto laughs. "I think you were my guardian angel this whole time."
He wants to tell Bokuto that he's wrong, that Bokuto really was his guardian angel, that it's because of him that he's friends with Kenma, it's because of him that he can stand living in his house, it's because of him that he has fallen in love. But the only things that comes out of his mouth is a sob.
Bokuto wipes the tears from his face with his thumbs, and kisses him on the cheek. His lips are soft and warm like a blanket too thick for the summer heat. He whispers in his ear, "I'll find you again."
Akaashi closes his eyes and nods. Hands drop from his face, leaving his cheeks cold. He hears a powerful whoosh. When he opens his eyes, Bokuto is gone.
He walks home alone after laboratory people have gone. He knows his coach will probably yell at him for missing the rest of the game, but Akaashi doesn't want to deal with him right now. He doesn't want to deal with anything at all. When he gets home, he goes into his room and slams the door, curling up on Bokuto's futon and laying there in silence.
Silent. The house was silent. Not quiet, like the absence of sound, but silent, like the absence of life. It was the kind of silence that carved a hole in your gut and made your ears ring. It was the kind of silence that was a vacuum for all other sound, the kind of silence that the cacophony of a full orchestra symphony would be lost to. Who knew that the absence of another's breath could be so deafening?
Two years later
Akaashi is unpacking the last of his boxes when he hears the crash.
The transition into dorm life at college wasn't as daunting as Akaashi thought it might be. His roommate, on the other hand, he was a little worried about.
Akaashi marches into the living room, already dreading having to clean up whatever mess was there. "Kenma, what did you - "
He stops mid-sentence when he sees a pair of giant wings. Attached to them is a man laying on his back, streaked hair a mess from falling through the window, looking upside-down at Akaashi with bright, golden eyes.
"I heard you needed a guardian angel?" he says.
Akaashi isn't sure where to smack him or kiss him. He runs to Bokuto's side and decides to do both.
