An open letter to Netflix and for everyone who feels the same
I would like to apologize in advance for any linguistic errors, English is not my native language, but I will do my best to express my concerns appropriately.
I am reaching out to you to express my deep disappointment at your cancellation of Dead Boy Detectives. The news of your decision hit me hard and I would like to ask you to reconsider. I understand that Netflix is a company that is about money, about numbers, about streams, about performance. It is a business and the decisions are based not on emotions but on lucrative fundamentals.
We all know that.
But this cannot work in the long term, not without an outcry from your viewers. Because what you do is selling dreams. You might not see us, but we are here, we are being absorbed into the alternative realities you have created. We live these dreams you sold us.
You know this, you know that you mostly produce more than just mindless entertainment that is subsequently forgotten, and that is exactly why I feel so let down by you. You are aware that our hearts and souls are attached to these characters, that’s what you want and it totally makes sense. Because whoever is emotional involved stays long term. A show can be so many different things for different people: a place of well-being, comfort, escapism, distraction, mental support, self-discovery. Queer and inclusive programs in particular help people and make them feel seen, understood and accepted. A show can be the only light in a darkness that so many people find themselves in today. A show with their characters can save lives.
How then do only numbers decide whether something continues or not?
You, as the producer of dreams, have a responsibility to us. Money and numbers should be secondary in your industry. Feel free to call me naive, I am, I like to be, I have to be in this world, but I believe in humanity, in the values that you claim to represent. Not every show can bring in billions. Not all of them can be Wednesday, Squid Game or Bridgerton. Not within fourteen days, not without support. With your impatience, you are depriving great shows of the chance to grow and, over time, attract the viewership that meets your expectations. What I'm trying to express here isn't only about Dead Boy Detectives. It's a fundamental problem.
I am not okay with this
Julie and the Phantoms
The OA
The Society
1899
Six of Crows
Shadow and Bone
Archive 81
Lockwood & Co.
Glamorous
Half Bad: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself
First Kill
Inside Job
Midnight Club
Warrior Nun
- just to name a few. All this shows have met the same fate, they all were cancelled too soon and never got the chance to grow, to become a next Stranger Things, the next slowburn success.
This has to stop! Imagine having cancelled Stranger Things after one season back in the days. What you would have missed! Instead, you give up on shows too easily without hesitation and disappoint the very people who could have been your allies in the effort to bring the next success.
I honestly don't understand that. And it's not fair either. Not to us, not to the creators and actors who gave their everything. You should trust them to be capable of creating something epic if only they had a little more time.
I'll tell you how it is: The news that Dead Boy Detectives had been cancelled is devastating. My life pretty much sucks for a few years now and there is little to nothing that still brings me joy. A second season has been the only thing I've been looking forward to these past few months, the anticipation has been the reason I'm still here. You took that away from me. From all of us that are like me. Now I’m sitting here and write this letter, hoping to save the show that has given me so much confidence and joy and meaning, visibility and understanding that it's okay to be who I am. It's not fair that I have to fight to keep this precious show instead of enjoying it while I deal with the wreckage of my life.
If you don't understand that what you're doing is impacting so many people, then maybe you shouldn't be selling dreams. Better sell electronics.
I won't stop fighting for what means so much to me. It's not too late yet, you can at least right the wrong you did with Dead Boy Detectives. Please do it, give Dead Boy Detectives another chance. We, the viewers, deserve it, the creators and actors deserve it, and most of all the show itself deserves it because it is the greatest thing I have seen in many years.
Thank you for your time and for considering my request.

Hello! My name is Ivan, I am a 22-year-old trans man that has recently started art school to understand the principles of design and color theory better so that I can make the art I’d really like to make. I’ve been drawing traditionally for around 10 years, and I occasionally try my hand at digital art, though I’m not the best at it. But since I started drawing, I’ve always wanted to share my art and make something out of it. Specifically, I’d like to design characters and give them meaningful stories that people relate to. I want my art to mean something, I want it to live and breathe in the way that only an audience on the internet can make it do. I’d like to create a safe, close nit community that fosters creativity in every way. I have a lot of oc designs, some are for different shows that I enjoy, but most of them are just people that aren’t connected to anything, and I’d like to share their stories, but deciding on a set backstory and name for each one can be difficult sometimes. But for now, I think I’ll just post the designs and see what other people think of them.
A couple more things about me: I love to cook, it’s one thing that has been a part of my life and personality since I was little. I mostly watch anime and listen to podcasts in my free time, though I do also play a few games, but not many. So expect some fan art from time to time from any of the following. I will also be posting this on my instagram @/ivandraws55
Anime: I started watching anime around the same time I started drawing, the first anime I watched that I recognized as anime was Blue Exorcist, and my favorite anime I’ve ever watched is Soul Eater. Though I did know about Naruto and had a Super Smash Bros style game for it as a kid. Some other anime that I have seen and enjoyed are: Ouran High School Host Club, Your Lie in April, Horimiya, Fruits Basket, Sk8 the Infinity, Haikyuu!!, Yuri!!! On Ice, Given, Spy x Family, Erased, Tokyo Revengers, The Orbital Children, No. 6, Jujustu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, Full Metal Alchemist, Attack On Titan, Black Clover, Fire Force, Bleach, and One Piece.
Podcast: I was introduced to Welcome to Nigh Vale when I was in high school, and instantly fell in love with it and the media format. Once I had caught up with it at the time, I started looking for others like it and fell into a rabbit hole of weird and interesting podcast that I couldn’t get enough of, some of these are: The Magnus Archives, Archive 81, The Storage Papers, The Penumbra Podcast, I Am In Eskew, Alice Isn’t Dead, The Milkman of St. Gaffs, The Town Whispers, EOS 10, Darkest Night, 36 Questions, The Bright Sessions, and Wolf 359.
Games: I’ve been playing Zelda games since I was a kid playing on a GameCube, my first one was Twilight Princess, so it will always be one of my favorite games, though I do have a variety of Zelda games. Another game that I started playing when it came out is Genshin Impact. My favorite character is and always has been Xinyan, she was one of my first characters and has had a mostly permanent spot on most of my team comps.

Satan's Choice MC was a Canadian outlaw motorcycle club that was once the dominant outlaw club in Ontario, and at the peak of its power in 1977, had 12 chapters based in Ontario, with one in Montreal, Quebec. However, its power began to diminish during the 1970s, with some of the clubs chapters "patching over" to the Outlaws MC in 1977. The remaining chapters would eventually become members of the Hells Angels along with most of the other major outlaw clubs in Ontario...

On the subject of good movies being dumped to streaming, I'd also like it if good shows (especially serialized ones) stopped being cancelled arbitrarily. Yes I know I'm not the first to say this.
It's just such a weird thing to do though. Netflix needs a back catalog of good content for the leaner months, or just to drive up retention more. I feel like their current plan is basically just to keep the top 2-3 most popular shows and cancel anything that doesn't get in there, but that's just making it exhausting to try to watch anything. I devote 10 hours to a story and then it ends on a cliffhanger, forever. At this point I don't watch shows on Netflix unless the show is complete, and I'm sure that's not great for their metrics. One Piece Live Action is good? Great, I'll check it out when the last season airs in 5 years.
Netflix is new to the game so I think that's why they're the worst at it. Hulu is owned by Fox which is owned by Disney. They've got a literal century of media production experience under their belt. HBO has been around since the early 70's. NBC has been around since 1926, Paramount since 1912. They've had enough institutional knowledge to understand how to make tv in a way that you don't have to cancel hugely popular shows arbitrarily. Obviously they make other stupid mistakes (it's HBO Max forever to me, not Max), but I can't quite think of a hugely popular serialized show that ended on a cliffhanger with no followup planned whatsoever that wasn't a Netflix show.
Still real mad about The Midnight Club and Archive 81. I'm sure everyone has a different show in mind, which is absolutely terrible for Netflix. It should not be so exhausting to figure out what to watch.

@re-dracula is my number three!
Which I think says more about my tendency to binge listen to older horror podcasts than anything else.
Digital Twin Fan Club at number five surprises me a little as I still have a bunch of those to listen to, but the episodes can be pretty long I guess :)

Nine Inch Nails - Closer 1994
"Closer" is a song by American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, released as the second single from their second studio album, The Downward Spiral. It is considered one of Nine Inch Nails' signature songs and remains their most popular song. Lyrically, "Closer" is a song about self-hatred and obsession, but was widely interpreted as a lust anthem due to its chorus.
"Closer" reached #41 on the US Billboard Hot 100, #25 on the UK Singles Chart, and #3 on the Australian Singles Chart. "Closer" did not initially appear on Canada's official music chart during its original release, but it reached a peak of #5 on the Canadian Singles Chart in 2002. It also did not chart in Denmark until 2007, when it reached #12.
Although there were numerous remixes of "Closer", the version titled "Closer to God" was heavily reworked, as the vocals were completely re-recorded and the overall song retained only a few elements from the original version. "Closer to God" was also released as a promotional single separate from "Closer", mainly intended for club-play.
"Closer" received a total of 70,9% yes votes! Nine Inch Nails' music has previously been featured in the polls, at #33 with the remix of David Bowie's "I'm Afraid of Americans" and at #81 with Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt".
