feeling nostalgic and watching utube reactors discover classic songs and then feeling both old and incredulous
#1980s music#like someone watching blondie's rapture and then stopping to go 'oh it reminds me of something it's so familiar'#different people (all younger) do this all the time and it can be infuriating#like it's an older song - did it ever occur to you that maybe what you're thinking of ... took inspiration from THIS song????#although in that case it was rather grandmaster flash and the nyc rap scene bc of course that's what the song was referencing#it's the boss baby meme but in music form#and i know i'm guikty of it too but at least in the correct direction - looking back to things that came before#not being aghast that a beat they've heard s thousand times was sampled from an old song that copied an older song lol#i will say that it is SO weird to me that peopke who say they are into hiphop never seem to reference the rap from my youth#like the late 70s and 80s sound that everything after is built on#and it's not like i know a lot about it beyond watching yo mtv raps at night lol#but i had to watch kids struggle to recognize the warren g regulate sample from michael mcdonald#like SO much of the early sampling era was just tons of samples of old records - anything they didn't have to pay for#and then listening to things and going oh this sounds like the weeknd - bro the weekend sounds like 80s songs#he sings and structures the songs in similar ways to classic tracks rather than the current trend (sometimes)#gah i'm just ranting here rather than in some poor utubers comments#i wish i had some fellow old folks to jabber with#but even when i was in high school i didn't have any friends that liked the same kind of music as i did#bts getting me more interested in music and watching videos has really been a double-edged sword sigh#everything with a live studio band with bass in it: 'oh this sounds like disco'#or worse something literally built off a disco sample and it's like they've never heard a disco song other than ymca in their life

Today's compilation:
100% Dance: Dancing Through the 80's 1995 Pop / Synthpop / New Wave / Dance-Pop / Disco / Post-Disco / House / Hip Hop
Took a trip back to the 1980s today with a bunch of tunes that really reflect just how eclectic the dance music was back then. Nowadays, the term 'dance music' more or less means uptempo electronic music, but before the advent of house in the mid-80s, and then techno in the late 80s, 'dance music' was a term that was applied much more broadly than how it came to be used later on.
And this 1995 comp here from Columbia, 100% Dance: Dancing Through the 80's, proves the point. On here you'll find everything from post-disco to new wave to synthpop to neo-soul to electro, with each selection making for ample party music from the Columbia/CBS Records catalogue itself. And what really sets this CD apart from other types of 80s dance comps is that it was only released in Germany. So, while you get classics that every American surely knows, like "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," "It's Raining Men," "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)," etc., you also get a few tunes that happened to be much more popular in Deutschland than they were Stateside.
For example, there's a superb piece of intense and catchy synthpop on here from a German group called Mysterious Art, whose" Das Omen 1" supplies a loud and thick blend of stabbing lead synth melody, alternately pounding kicks and snares, and a really active synth bassline, while also sampling from Carl Orff's famed "O Fortuna" as well. This banger reached #1 on the German charts in 1989, sold nearly 500,000 copies, and its massive success led to Mysterious Art getting the opportunity to open for Madonna on her Blonde Ambition tour through Germany. And I don't think that it charted in any capacity in the US 😯.
But in addition to a couple big German-made hits, there are also some great British ones that didn't amount to much in America either too, including one from Wham!, who in 1982 got on the post-disco-funk-rap tip with "Young Guns (Go for It)," which featured some pretty decent and debonair pop-rapping from George Michael himself; certainly better than what Debbie Harry had contributed to "The Rapture" a couple years prior 😂. This one never charted in the US, but it was #3 in the UK and #20 in West Germany.
And lastly, there's also some terrifically lush neo-soul from UK R&B group The Pasadenas, who delivered a sleek tune in 1988 called "Riding On a Train," which went to #13 in the UK, but didn't make the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, and only made it to #73 on the more specific R&B chart. And I also don't know how it performed in West Germany, but given that it's included on this comp here, I have no doubt that it performed much better there than it did in the States.
So, an excellent look here at some great dance records from the 80s that did really well in West Germany. Always fun to get a look at comps from other countries so you can compare and contrast between what your own neck of the woods was rocking to and what another place was constantly bumping. Lots of similarities between the US and West Germany, but there were some pretty sweet differences too. And evidently, Columbia/CBS Records was significantly involved in the West German music industry back then as well.
Highlights:
Cyndi Lauper - "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" Wham! - "Young Guns (Go for It)" The Weather Girls - "It's Raining Men" Mysterious Art - "Das Omen 1" Bangles - "Walk Like an Egyptian" Culture Beat - "Der Erdbeermund" Paul Young - "Come Back and Stay" Herbie Hancock - "Rockit" Dead or Alive - "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" Earth, Wind & Fire - "Let's Groove" The Pasadenas - "Riding on a Train" Bros - "When Will I Be Famous" Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam - "Can You Feel the Beat"

A-T-2 393 I Gave Birth To Most Of Those MCs
Before Roxanne Shante and Sparky D there was The Sequence (which gave us Angie Stone A-T-2 214) and the Funky 4+1 (featuring +1, Sha Rock A-T-2 300, here's some great footage of the Funky 4+1 performing at The Kitchen in 1980 https://vimeo.com/115293799)
The Sequence and the Funky 4+1 were groups, these two are solo female MCs
Jahneen - Gigolette produced and engineered by bassist Wayne Brathwaite (A-T-2 150, A-T-2 262, A-T-2 300, A-T-2 302) and written with Mike Serrette, Bill Moore and Juanita Holloway (of Hardkore/South Bronx A-T-2 301)
youtube
Thug Rock could have gone in with my disco rap covers post (A-T-2 300) as the backing track is Give Me by britfunk band i-Level
Sandy Kerr is the daughter of George Kerr, who is a bit of a legend when it comes to his writing and production credits. George Kerr co-produces Thug Rock with Reggie Griffin who we've met already (A-T-2 146.) Griffin had a busy year in 1982 in addition to what I've already posted he released a solo album and under his lead the group he was in group Manchild release an album as Redd Hott, both were produced by George Kerr. I think we can surmise there's some good musicians playing on Thug Rock. M+M remix it, I'm not sure if I've posted a John Morales & Sergio Munzibai mix yet. Bob Blank is engineer (A-T-2 300 Just Four - Jam To Remember, A-T-2 111, A-T-2 119, A-T-2 285 Inner Life, A-T-2 315) George Kerr, Reggie Griffin, M+M, and Bob Blank do a string of disco rap records in 1982
Sandy Kerr - Thug Rock
youtube
Sandy Kerr - Thug Rock  (Chimental Mix)
youtube
Okay so this last one isn't a female MC, it's T/Ski Valley but it does relate to both the above tracks. !Catch The Beat! is arranged by Wayne Brathwaite (essentially its the same team as Jam To Remember involved with this record, Brathwaite, Glen Adams and Brad Osborne A-T-2 300) and Bob Blank engineers. Oh also obviously uses Taana Gardner's Larry Levan classic Heartbeat as it's basis

Music headcannons ✨
Skipper
Tumblr media
Secretly loves CC Catch and Modern Talking but won’t admit to it
Pretty cannon that he likes rock and classic rock, so he’d defo like Judas Priest, Foreigner and Derek and the Dominoes - the song Layla fits his vibe
Bro definitely listens to Rammstein
He’d be more into 70s than anything else but would also like 80s and 60s, so he’d love Fleetwood Mac
He has a cowboy obsession so he probably likes western and cowboy music lmao
Would probably dislike 90s
Probably also has a more limited music taste than the others
Canonically good at guitar so I hc him and Kowalski would build an electric one and he’d jam out when he’s alone
Kowalski
Tumblr media
Absolutely ABBA there is no debating.
He gives me 70s vibes and would probably listen to some classic rock but Thin Lizzy and Bee Gees would defo be his vibe
Blondie fan
Adam and the Ants. No question.
Bro plays banjo ofc he listens to country
Probably also listens to western and cowboy music like Skipper
Swiftie.
Occasional 90s
Spam listens to Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely (bc Doris)
When he’s in the lab he’ll listen to classical music bc it doesn’t have lyrics to distract him
Rico
Tumblr media
Full on death metal, black metal and thrash metal like Slayer
But also classical music like Vivaldi or Beethoven (as a rocker myself in a family of rockers it’s safe to say that if they like heavy metal, they also probably like classical music)
Shitty punk rock enjoyer - credit to @iamhowlingmad for mentioning it
Gives me hip hop and rap vibes, he’d love Will Smith
Spam listens to Running in the 90s and Gas Gas Gas when driving
I’d say sometimes even dubstep? Idk it’s energetic like him
Bro also definitely listens to Rammstein
But probably listens to lullabies to fall asleep
He probably occasionally plays a little guitar but wouldn’t make a habit out of it like the others
Most varied music taste out of them all
Private
Tumblr media
He’s the youngest so definitely 2000s and 2010s, since the show is from that era and he’d love modern pop
Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Big Time Rush and probably One Direction
Probably also a Swiftie
He’d also like 70s and 80s disco but probably not as much as the others
He would probably listen to some 90s like Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys
I feel like he’d love to listen to soundtracks, especially Zelda stuff since it’s relatively calm and very vibey
Canonically loves Copacabana
Marlene
Tumblr media
Absolute 80s fanatic
CC Catch would probably be her favourite, Strangers By Night gives me Marlene vibes
Secretary slow dances to Kiss From a Rose by herself
Probably listens to Rihanna and Shakira
Also pretty cannon that she likes rock from like that one episode where she’s pretending to be a rockstar? She would totally be a metal head and love stuff like Motörhead, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden
Give her an electric guitar and she could probably play Master of Puppets.
Would probably fangirl over CC Catch and rock bands with Skipper
Canonically loves Spanish Guitar so play her some Flamenco and she’d melt
Julien
Tumblr media
90s there is no questioning it.
Ofc I Like to Move It Move It is his favourite
Definitely listens to 90s and 2000s club hits to dance party to all night
Britney Spears lover
Backstreet Boys fanatic.
Probably screams I Want it That Way in Maurice’s ear all day
🎶TeLL mE wHaY🎶
Skipper would get sick of all the 90s music so he’d probably discretely give him a Modern Talking mixtape for his boom box, and he’d love them
Defo also likes 80s disco and loves Boney M
Thinks he’s the Just Dance king but the penguins secretly practice every Friday night and can do Rasputin perfectly

Did you get mysterious messages? ~🎵
MYSTIC MESSENGER MUSIC HEADCANONS :D (RFA + V, Rika, Vanderwood)
Jihyun / V
I think V would love Mitski. Just imagining him painting while my love, mine All mine plays in the background is so sweet. I also think he'd like cavetown, clario, Adrianne Lenker, Liane Flores and Tears For Fears. He often listens to it as background noise when painting or photographing but I also believe he'd practice singing using certain songs (and maybe sing you to sleep HSHSHS)
Jumin
Jumin gives me trouble because I feel like he listens to music for lyrics or lack thereof rather than sound. He listens to blues, jazz, classical and maybe a soft rock love song here and there. If he listens to a song with lyrics, he'll study them. He doesn't really listen to music often but when he does, it's often used as background noise rather than him genuinely indulging.
707 / Saeyoung / Luciel
I think he'd listen to mostly everything but especially synth wave, pop, new wave, rap, noise and glam rock for some reason. I could see him vibing to Depeche Mode one moment and then Fetty Wap the next. He would definitely unironically listen to wannabe by the spice girls LMAO. Also probably really likes tv show intros like iCarly theme or something. AND DISCO!! Seven dancing to bee gees when!?!?
Yoosung
To get rid of the obvious he'd listen to video game osts, pixel (I think that's what the genre is called?) and probably, here me out, pop punk. Or like Falling in Reverse. I think his favourite band would be the All American Rejects but I can also see him liking old demi lavato or Camilla cabello. Both basic white girl music and then randomly pop punk mixed in. As for gaming soundtracks I think he'd really like the undertale ost and probably listens to music through gacha life amv 😔
Zen / Hyun
I FEEL LIKE HIS MUSIC TASTE WAS EXPLICITLY STATED BUT I DONT REMEMBER RAHH okay okay uhm- !! I can totally see him listening to Whitney Houston, Abba, The Cardigans, The Beatles etc for some reason but also he'd feel self conscious that his music taste is too "old" so he would throw in shit like Kendrick Lamar and Future to spice things up and he would never ever admit that his favourite song is Angeleyes by Abba.
Jaehee
Bubblegum Pop, Indie and Doo Wop!!! Mitski, Girl In Red, Kinneret, Princess Chelsea, The Chordettes and The Supremes are frequents of Jaehee's playlist! She only really listens to music on the plane or in the office though. It helps her relax and take her mind off the stress for a bit. I can imagine her learning piano and playing songs like Johnny Angel or Mr Sandman in her free time.
Rika
Rika likes Melanie Martinez and i refuse to argue. She would probably relate really hard to some of her music and overall loves the way it sounds. Can also see her liking Penelope Scott. On the other hand, i see her liking classical or just soft piano music. Color me Blue by Akane would also be a song i can see her liking.
Vanderwood
Metal, Glam Rock, Glam Metal, Dad Rock, 80s rock just. Yeah. You get the point. Metallica, Journey, Mötley Crüe, Guns n Roses, Van Halen, Cinderella, Def Leppord and Dokken !! His favourite bands. Just classic 80s/90s rock for ya. Absolutely goes to their concerts religiously. Probably plays electric guitar as well..he could perform his own concert tbf

This is kind of the grand finale of her discography. Idk I think she has more craziness in her but the layers and brilliance to this. I’ve never seen anyone blend this kind of boomer Facebook political rambling abt gun control with disco, tongue and cheeky 80s PSA rap references, synth, string instruments, gun shots …. The 90s sexy whispering. The disco references, the choir, the 00s daft punk vibes. the borrowed revolutionary language for such a run of the mill cause…the nihilism, the absurdity, her randomly reflecting on her own insularity….kind of the greatest pop song ever made

My ideal production of Starlight Express.
I suppose I'll just get right into it. First the list of characters, then the songs (excluding little bits/non-songs like Taunting Rusty and the races), then the rest.
Cast:
Rusty
Pearl
Greaseball
Dinah
Electra
CB
Ashley
Buffy
Poppa
Belle, the Sleeping Car (called Memphis Belle)
Dustin
Flat-Top
The Rockies
Volta, Joule, Wrench, Purse, and Krupp

Control
Setlist (* = will be addressed below):

A Lotta Locomotion ('83 Workship version, but with Buffy added)
He Whistled At Me (Minus the Rusty/Pearl conversation)
*Dinah/Greaseball duet
Freight (With the girls bullying the boys)
AC/DC
Pumping Iron ("Trying to build my body, trying to lose my mind" and "Stretching my bullworker, heaving on my weights" switch spots because I just feel that it'd sound better that way.)
Sleepers moment
*Dinah solo
Hitching and Switching (probably original)
Crazy
*That was Unfair (extended)
That's Me/There's Me (duet)
Poppa's Blues
Belle's Song (Combo of OG & Broadway — especially "sniffing the coke")
Starlight Express
The Rap: Hey You
*Make Up My Heart
Pearl Twirl
U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D.

Wide Smile (Mostly the Broadway version, except he says the OG "...C.B." in the chorus instead of Broadway's "...the Red Caboose," until the ending after Electra & co leave.)
I Was Robbed
Right Place, Right Time
I Am The Starlight
Rusty and Dustin
*Dinah's Disco (extended)
No Comeback
One Rock & Roll Too Many
I Do and/or Only You (I really want "I Do," and it feels redundant to do both in a row, but I feel like "Only You" is important?)
*GreaseDinah reunion (extended)
Light At The End Of The Tunnel
Starlight Express Megamix (of course)
Notes:
We are leaning hard into the 80's here! None of that trying to modernize StEx they've been doing since the 90's. It doesn't work, and the hyper-80's...ness is one of the best things about StEx!
This is about 60% the 1984 original, so keep that in mind.
Dinah & Greaseball look most like the original Dinah and Greaseball. (Though Dinah's hair looks like this. I'll get to her costumes below.) Greaseball looks completely like Jeff Shankley's GB.
Most of the costumes look like the Broadway versions.
However, Pearl gets 3 costumes; her pants outfit from the '84 previews (but with white pants), followed by her sleek Broadway dress outfit (w/ Electra), and then the fluffy dress outfit (w/ GB).
Dinah has 2 costumes; the first one being more Broadway (but I dislike the leggings, so different ones), and then, when she pairs with Electra, she changes to and outfit that is similar to her OG outfit.
C.B.'s look is very similar to the original, except his pants are black, and he has his later hat.
I want some of the choreography from the '83 workshop. ( x x x x )
Dinah & Greaseball banter a bit because "Incapable of feeding yourself, Greaseball?" Ohhh *chef's kiss* 2017 London Workshop did something right!
*Dinah & Greaseball get a couple's duet. It's a fun, cute, rock/80's pop mix song that touches on their love for each other and how they don't care about others' bullshit. ("Our Lips Are Sealed" kind of vibes, I suppose.)
Ashley and Duvay are sisters.
Greaseball pulls the girls during "Freight," like he originally did.
*Dinah gets a solo after "Pumping Iron" after the Sleepers talk their bullshit. It'd be about 3½ minutes long. If you've read my Dinah rants, you can get an idea of what it's about.
Greaseball, Bobo, and Espresso are part of the choreography during "Crazy" toward the end, racing around with Dinah, Ashley, and Buffy. (I promise this is FIRE in my head. Have faith. 🥺)
*Grease & Dinah have a longer argument before their breakup.
Dinah and C.B. have a duet. It's the Broadway version of There's Me combined with That's Me. (Dinah singing her solo part first.)
*Pearl sings "Make Up My Heart" about Rusty, Electra, and Greaseball. (Explanation here.)
*"U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D." is slower, sadder, and has more lyrics, like it was in the '83 workshop.
Buffy & Ashley are finally canon. It's Complicated™️, but they get it together by the end.
*"Dinah's Disco" is a bit longer, as is *Dinah & Greaseball's reunion/makeup.
Pearl is absolutely like original Pearl in this: A selfish bitch (who learns and gets better by the end); she is not "naive." ("Further from my vision" over "Sadder but no wiser.")
We actually acknowledge that Pearl is an asshole. But, like Greaseball, she learns and is working on herself by the end! 🙌🏽
Pearl apologizes to Dinah at the end. FINALLY. (During a break in LATEOTT.)
Control loves the trains/coaches/freight, and they love him. He's just a bossy little kid, but they're also actin' up. (I'm open to Control being a girl.)
Electra and the Components do come back.
I... think that's it. I hope didn't forget anything.
CHOO CHOO! 💋

Nina, como seria os meninos com uma leitora que tem espírito de velha? Que adora costurar, ver filmes/novelas, usas casacos de lã, ficar em casa, dormir cedo, ler livros a torta e a direita, cozinhar tudo que der na telha (especialmente doces, biscoitos e bolos) e ouvir músicas românticas (tipo Can’t help falling in love do Elvis e put your head on my shoulder do paul anka)?

Today’s compilation:
That's My Beat by Mantronix 2002 Hip Hop / Electro / Post-Disco / Synthpop / Funk
Man, this is such an amazing little document of a late 70s/early 80s New York City club sound era, when DJs could spin so much different cool shit and no one would complain about it at all. Nowadays you have DJs who stick to one style of music, like dark and moody progressive house or something, but back then, there were way less barriers and specificities as to what one could play; the singular hard and fast rule was that as long as it could move bodies, it was acceptable. And we need more of that open-minded, anything-goes ethic now more than ever, I think. DJs, diversify your damn sets! *shakes fist*
Anyway, this recounting of an excellent period of Big Apple dance is told through the eyes of 80s music legend Kurtis Mantronik, a much vaunted DJ, producer, and remixer who was the brains behind hip hop group Mantronix and whose creations went on to inspire hip hop and party rap movements in the south like Miami bass and trap, despite the fact that he and his crew hailed from New York.
With this collection of tunes, Mantronik simultaneously shows us the music that inspired him to start making music of his own as well as a diverse blend of bangers that lit up dancefloors across the five boroughs over a relatively short, yet tumultuous period of time. That's My Beat comes with unforgettable hip hop classics, like the Funky 4 + 1's "That's the Joint," a song that beloved NYC-based critic Robert Christgau ranked as his top song of the entire 1980s; it has early Japanese electro goodness from Yellow Magic Orchestra and its co-founder Ryuichi Sakamoto, whose "Computer Game" and "Riot in Lagos," respectively, proved to be influential on the development of Detroit and UK bleep techno as well as Afrika Bambaataa-styled hip hop and electro; there's Machine's "There But for the Grace of God Go I," a super uptempo one-hit wonder bit of disco-funk and proto-house brilliance that Christgau also rated as the best disco single of 1979; and then there's probably my favorite song within this whole slate, an irresistible post-disco-funk bop from a briefly extant group called Unlimited Touch, whose "I Hear Music in the Streets" reached #6 on Billboard's dance chart in 1980 and manages to leave an impression upon me like no other song on this compilation does. Clap-along beat, funky bass groove and guitar riff, dazzling high-pitched lead vocal, and a chorus that very unexpectedly pounces on the soul 😌. Good lord.
New York's dancy late 70s and early 80s period—when DJ sets were full of ephemeral flakes of hip hop, electro, disco, post-disco, funk, and synthpop gold—seems like one of the best times and places to have ever been around when it comes to music. And this compilation that was put together by Kurtis Mantronik proves to be a shining example of why that's the case.
Highlights:
Yellow Magic Orchestra - "Computer Game" Suzy-Q - "Get On Up and Do It Again" Visage - "Pleasure Boys" Funky 4 + 1 - "That's the Joint" Machine - "There But for the Grace of God Go I" Yello - "Bostich" Jimmy Spicer - "Super Rhymes" The Art of Noise - "Beatbox" Unlimited Touch - "I Hear Music in the Streets" Ryuichi Sakamoto - "Riot in Lagos"

A-T-2 302 Disco Rap Pt.3
Pt.3 the production is a on the raw side, they're also a little more obscure. Disco rap is passing through its peak in 1982 and once Run-DMC come along disco rap all but disappears
Another conscious rap, this time about cut backs. 40-years and still relevant! The backing music is variation on Good Times by Chic
Flo Lollis - Cut Back (Part I + II)
youtube
Part II - it's roughly an instrumental
youtube
Doing The Do sees Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyd rapping over a re-record Bob James's hip hop staple Nautilus. Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde were involved with making Rockin' It from Pt.1 and their own big boast single The Challenge, they wrote Captain Rock's records (A-T-2 299) Andre "Dr Jeckyll" Harrell (RIP) met alleged predator Russel Simmons in 1983, he would become VP of Def Jam before founding his own hugely successful r&b and hip hop label Uptown Records in 1986. Between 1995-1997 he was CEO of Motown. Harrell also gave Sean "Puffy" Combs his break in the industry. Alonzo "Mr Hyde" Brown got their foot in at Profile Records where they released their first single as Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde - Genius Rap, rapping over Tom Tom Clubs' Genius Of Love. Doing The Do is a bit different, it's not on Profile so I suspect it's release was an attempt to cash in on the success of Genius Rap. They originally recorded as the Harlem World Crew and as you can hear that's who they say they are on this record
Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde - Doing The Do
youtube
Mike Serrette of South Bronx (A-T-2 301) put out three records under three different names in 1982. Hardkore has K. Tempel (Trapeze?) as the other rapper, I think they only release one record. Boom was co-written by Wayne Brathwaite who arranged Just Four - Jam To Remember which I included in Disco Rap Pt.1 and as I said there Brathwaite was bassist for a lot of Mighty M Productions (A-T-2 299, A-T-2 262) sadly I can't find the instrumental of Boom on yT
Hardkore - Boom
