Bocchi the Rock might have unfortunately gotten me back into watching anime in between episodes of Star Trek in my off time. What’s funny about this season though is how many of these are guilty pleasures which I’m already familiar with and love. For the record, I’ve watched the first episode of each the below.

80k Gold Coins: I’ve actually already spoken about this one, and it even showed up in my last 3x3. I was really happy when I heard this was getting animated because there’s some scenes later on (that already appear in the OP!) which I’m really looking forward to seeing in motion. If you want to know more about this check out my older posts, but suffice it to say this was by far my favorite of the opening episodes I watched. This gets so dumb later on, and in all the right ways. It’s kind of funny how the opening episode paints Mitsuha in a sympathetic light because she’s a monster and a total joy to watch.

Nier Automata: My 2017 Game of the Year and not remotely a guilty pleasure. Honestly, aside from looking very pretty I have low expectations of this. Nier is one of those games that I think is good because it’s a video game, and so an adaptation seems like it could never hit the same. My interest in this is more academic. I’m mostly curious to see how they decide to tackle this. So far, it looks like they’re going chronological, which for the first part means you see both 2B and 9S’ story simultaneously. This has the funny side effect of making 2B look like an idiot right off the bat because one of the revelations of your second playthrough is that 2B is kind of a chump and 9S is crazy OP.

Tsun de Rais: This is the only one that I haven’t actually read/played before, but the premise sounded so strong that I just had to check it out. It’s really hard to describe, but imagine if you and your friend’s Let’s Play commentary on a game, which includes modern slang, otaku terminology, and a lot of shipping discussion, was actually heard by the one of the fantasy game characters, who is thoroughly confused and thinks they’re hearing the voices of their gods telling them what to do. I’m crossing my fingers on this one, because I enjoyed the first episode, but I have a bad feeling that it’s another one of those that starts off with a great premise, but then gets bogged down and loses sight of what made it so fun.

Onimai: Of my top three somewhat problematic manga that I love, this is like, number two. Basically, an eroge loving NEET older brother becomes the little sister of his brocon little sister. It sounds a lot worse than it is, but the manga is really damn funny. I adore its cute and simplistic art style, I’m a sucker for things that play around with gender, and Mahiro’s journey to becoming a decent human bean is fun. The anime meanwhile is shockingly well animated. Like, “I have no idea where this came from” well animated. That said, I think the anime might go too far in a few places, to the point where I’m on the fence for whether I’ll be watching the rest.

AN: This is something I saw @thatreallytallbrowngirl​ doing with their AMAZING trephacard fic and it occurred to me that this might be a good idea, since an 80K+ word fic is a little intimidating to just dive into. And serializations are fun! Sorta retro! Like radio shows! Hey so I don’t actually know what I’m talking about at this point, but let’s have some fun. 

I’ll post the entire content thinger here with part 1 and after that, just warnings specific to the chapter.

Fandom: Netflix Castlevania, post season 2 Characters/Pairings: Trevor, Sypha, Alucard, Trephacard ot3  Rating/Warnings: Adult/explicit eventually. Depression, grief/mourning, blood/violence, blood drinking, sex, an absolutely brutal amount of feels, and far more fluff and conversation and healthy character growth than this warning list lets on to. Summary: Wellspring (n): Where something begins.

Trevor’s been throwing rocks and coins and shit into wells for most of his life, without any expectation of getting wishes granted or anything stupid like that. All he really wants is to know there's something down there.

“Look, Tref,” Alina says, a tease creeping along the undersurface of her words. “It’s a bottomless faery well. Bet something really fierce lives down there, eh?”

The granite is cold under his palms, crisscrossed as they already are with old cuts and scars and still too small to span the width of the stone. It's an itching sort of cold, settling into his bones like a haunting, dank stale air wafting up from the depths they're all peering into—and at eight years old, Trevor Belmont knows with certainty that there is no such thing as a bottomless well. It's a thing of bedtime stories, gold rings and promises and witches’ spells. It’s the same sort of crap that makes the port town cartographers draw dragons out beyond the edge of the world, when the world is obviously a broad curving bow reaching back around on itself and sure, there are dragons out there, or something very much like them, but they don’t only dwell in those catastrophic shallows. He knows this because his family knows it, because there are things the Belmonts have always known and must know to do their work; there are enough real horrors in the world to deal with without inventing and imagining new ones, daring them into existence. The world is no tabletop with a cliff drop at the edge; the sun does not move round them like human life is all that matters in the cosmos; there is no such thing as a bottomless well.

He still reaches one hand out, dropping a pebble in to hear its quiet rattling descent, going on and on, skittering away and then swallowed up by the darkness and silence. No splash.

His father pushes away from the well in disgust. They're all thirsty, have been on the road for days, on the trail of some creature that’s been licking the village girls’ feet bloody and leaving them flowers while they sleep, petals singed black at the edges—a zmeu maybe, Trevor thinks, but the rest of the party disagrees so he’s keeping his mouth shut. And it's one thing to have to break up a well that's iced over, but there’s not even a sign of ice down there.

Trevor casts around behind himself, scouring through the frost and rot-sweet leaf litter for a larger stone, big and heavy enough that they'll really be able to hear if it hits something. Everyone else is giving up, but there's a crawling feeling up the back of his neck that is telling him, something is not right here.

"It's dry, boy," his father says, cuffing him back from the edge just as he lets the stone drop; a normal child might have stumbled backward, slipped and fallen into the wet embankment. He just takes a steadying step back, feet stable on the slightly slick, uneven terrain, listening to the clunk and clatter of the rock going down and down and down. "We'll get nothing from it. Not worth our time."

"But—"

"What have we taught you," his father interrupts mildly, "About time, and strength?"

From the well: silence. No splash and no impact.

"Both are like the food in your bag," Trevor recites. "They don't last forever, and it's easier to carry what you have than to find more later."

"Good lad. Let’s keep moving; we might make a town by sunset."

So they move on. It's Alina’s hunt really, his eldest sister and the toughest hunter in their generation so far; he's just along to carry some of the gear, and watch and learn, and otherwise stay well back out of trouble. It'll be a year or two at least before they arm him on these outings with anything more than the short sword he uses to spar with at home, before they expect him to be able to sense the monsters on their tail before he sees them, before he'll be able to feel the tingling hum and burn in a consecrated weapon and channel it to its purpose. But there was something about that well—he's sure of it, even as they leave it behind them. Something he can feel in his skin and in his blood, something that makes his teeth itch and his hackles rise. Whatever is in there, it's for damn sure not nothing.

He drops a lot of rocks into a lot of wells, from that point on—and bits of branches and bent old worthless coins, testing each and every one he comes across for that same eerie silence. Every mundane splash that echoes back up feels like a reprieve, like one more day before he’ll have to face whatever hungry thing it is that lurks in bottomless depths.

Twenty-some years and one dead vampire lord later, wandering along a dry creekbed that Sypha has insisted is a common shortcut through these woods and which does feel weirdly familiar, he comes across the well again. Or a well anyway; it might not be the same well—they’re all pretty much the same in the end, stones and moss and a bucket and so on. But he recognizes that weird tugging in the back of his brain, the same part of his awareness that tells his feet that he needs to dodge before the rest of him catches up, and it’s enough to make him halt the horses, hand the reins to Sypha and drop down from the wagon, wordlessly investigating.

She comes up behind him just as he’s letting a rock drop in; he shouts after it for good measure, but there’s no returning echo—just the distant ringing of stone on stone, fading. As in his memories of being here that first time: no sound of impact.

“What is it?” she asks, and it’s on the tip of his tongue to say, A well, to laugh a little and say You know, one of those things you pull water out of, just to watch her get all affectionately annoyed.

“I’ve been here before,” he says instead, a little distant, tracing his fingers over the stone. He circles the well, footsteps silent in the wet grass, face dipping in and out of dappled shadow from the tree cover above. “It was the same then, too. Listen.”

He chucks another stone in; she listens, nodding as the silence stretches. “Is it dry?”

“Maybe. Or it goes on forever.”

“Or it’s enchanted.”

“What?” he asks, snorting his incredulity. “Catching everything that’s tossed in? Could be a wrecking yard of rocks and coins and things down there.”

“Just hovering over the water,” and there’s amusement in her voice. “Though I cannot imagine why anyone would enchant a well to do that.”

“Some weird packrat of a magician maybe. Like those birds.”

“Magpies?”

“Mmm.”

“I don’t know. It still doesn’t make a lot of sense.”

Trevor shifts, braces on the well’s rim, leaning in over the blackness. “Makes more sense than it actually being bottomless,” he says, voice hollowed out and swallowed up by the cold stone.

Silence for a moment, breathing in that same stale air he remembers, and he wonders how many other voices have disappeared into it, how many strangers’ words he’s tasting on the back of his own tongue. Then a warm orange light flickers off to the side.

“Do you want me to—?” Sypha asks, gesturing into the darkness with the contained little ball of flame and light she’s got hovering in her palm.

“No,” Trevor says, after a stretch. “I don’t— I don’t think I want to know which it is.”

An hour or so later, as the sun’s starting to work its melting, bleeding way under the horizon, Trevor again stops the horses. There’s imagery in his head—bottomless pits and icy stone in the wintertime and endless, hopeless falls, from grace or otherwise—that he’s been struggling to connect with something that makes sense. All at once, the pieces have come together, the answer standing out like a splash of sunlight across a darkened room.

Somewhere nearby, the rough, ugly call of an evening bird.

“So, ah. What do you think about going back to the castle?” he asks, tentative.

A sigh of relief from next to him, as if she’d been a hair’s breadth from saying it too and had been anticipating an argument. “We should. We don’t have any other destination at the moment, and I was beginning to feel aimless.”

“You’ve spent your life a nomad. Isn’t aimlessness part of that whole package?”

“Yes, but since all of this began, I’ve learned what it feels like to have direction,” she says, gesturing at the horizon. “To have purpose.”

That’s bullshit; she’s always had direction, he thinks, always had purpose. Always had a strong sense of what has to be done, or else he wouldn’t have found her in the catacombs like he did. But maybe she just means knowing which way to point the wagon. “How’s it feel?”

“Good! But I am not the only one who needs purpose, and I think this is the direction we’ve been needing.”

“Sure,” he says, casual. “Just to… check on the state of things. It’s been a while. Make sure everything’s still secure.”

She laughs a little, knowingly, teasing. “Of course. That is clearly what you are most concerned with, Trevor Belmont.”

Shit. Whole name means she’s on to him. “It is!”

“Of course,” she repeats and then, mercifully, drops the subject.

So they go back.

It’s a careful process, avoiding the town spread out below and all of its fucking horrible memories, tethering the horses up to a bit of old Belmont ruins. They pick their way over the wreckage of the castle’s entryway that has still not been cleared, and dodge around the largest bloodstains in the carpets that have still not been washed away, and don’t talk about just how worried they’re becoming with each step through this abandoned, desolate space.

“Maybe he did go back to sleep after all,” Trevor says, trying for disappointment but it sounds stupid and naive even to his own ears. He pauses at the base of the staircase, hand settling on the wood.

“Or maybe he has been working on the hold instead? It took a lot more structural damage than this place did,” Sypha suggests, and see, on her? Optimism works. It doesn’t sit like an ill-fitting coat on the frame of her voice, forced and false, like it does when he gives it a go. He can almost believe her.

But there’s a voice in his head, the same one that’s been with him for fifteen years with helpful reminders every time he dares to forget that everyone he’s ever loved is dead, and it’s communing with all the old ghosts in this place to say that maybe, maybe something else has happened. It’s a thought he tries to dodge but it’s like it’s made of thornweed, covered in sticky burrs, and the harder he struggles against it the more it snags and cuts him.

Maybe the townspeople chased him out, it starts out, pretty benign. Survivable. Pitchforks, torches—they like those here.

Then: Maybe they did more than just chase him.

Then: Maybe one of those rogue vampire Generals decided to come here and do away with the last bastion of humanity in their fucked-up, demented power structure.

Maybe…

He thinks about Alucard, standing on this very spot at the base of the stairs, eyes a hundred miles away as he called this place his grave, and Trevor had said No but what does no mean, to a creature who’s never had to follow a command in his life? Hell, Trevor had told him to make something of the place too, and that clear as fuck hasn’t happened.

“This feels wrong,” Sypha says, toeing at a bloodstain that looks, in the light, like it’s fresher than the others. “I don’t like it.”

Trevor closes his eyes, takes a deep breath through his nose; the smell of old blood is overpowering. If the worst has happened, he thinks, if they find Alucard upstairs somewhere staked and bled out for weeks, he can only pray to whatever wrathful god still pays attention to him that there will be revenge to be had, someone to aim his fury at, someone whose blood he can spill in return—cleanse these walls with it, let it soak into the soles of his boots and know that justice has been done.

They climb the staircase in silence, dust motes floating thick in the sunlight streaming in through the unshuttered windows.

How Much Money Does the Shield Hero Owe in Taxes?

It’s April 15th and for all of our US readers out there, you know what that means–it’s Tax Day! In the spirit of the season, we decided to turn our editorial eye to one of our most financially savvy anime protagonists of the current season–Naofumi Iwatani, the titular Shield Hero in the smash hit isekai series The Rising of the Shield Hero. Naofumi establishes himself early on as a natural merchant, turning low level monster grinding into money, which he in turn invests in ways that diversify his ever increasing cash flows. So what does this have to do with Tax Day? Well, I took it upon myself to answer the question that no one was asking–after all of his trading is said and done, how much money does Naofumi owe in taxes?

(Author’s note: Please note that I am neither an expert on the Shield Hero light novels, nor any sort of economics professional, so take this article with a healthy pile of salt. It is intended only as a fun thought experiment and is not meant as a substitute for actual financial advice!)

The Economy of Melromarc (A Note on Methodology)

So how much does the Shield Hero owe in taxes? Before we get into the nitty gritty, we’ve got to establish a few ground rules for how we’re going to go forward. First off, I’ll be basing this on what I’ve seen in the anime only–no light novel or manga-specific information. Second, in terms of taxes, the country of Melromarc is a pretty close analogue to Medieval Europe, but honestly it’s funnier trying to shoehorn Naofumi’s income and property into contemporary United States tax codes, so I’m just going to do that. That said, we still need to establish the following:

1. A working exchange rate between United States dollars and the currency used in the show.

2. Have a working model to calculate how much money Naofumi likely makes annually.

3. Any possible deductions (this is important, as Naofumi would absolutely wring every last copper piece out of the tax system that he could).

Converting Melromarc Money to USD

In Melromarc, there is a uniform standard of currency comprised of three types of coins. In order of ascending value, they are copper pieces, silver pieces, and gold pieces. In episode 2, Naofumi pays 9 coppers for the cheapest adult meal set for himself and a children’s meal for Raphtalia. Fast food makes for a convenient analogue here. According to this 2015 article from Business Insider, the average per person cost for food at McDonald’s is $4.72. Assuming that kids meals tend to run about ⅔ the cost of an adult meal, we can go forward assuming that 9 silvers can roughly convert to $8. Extrapolating this way from another instance (a stay at an inn costing one silver per night) we can assume (based on this statista graph) that one silver is about $120. Gold is a bit tricky, considering the only value attached to them in the show (that I could remember) had to do with things that didn’t have easy analogues in the real world like holy water and class changes. There was one instance where a dragon was said to be worth 20 gold. Since we know that dragons are the fancier mode of transportation in Melromarc, and luxury cars in 2019 generally run around $80k - $100k, let’s just assume that 20 gold nets around $90k. So no we know:

1 copper = $.089

1 silver = $120

1 gold = $4,500

Naofumi’s Annual Income

As of episode 14, here are all of Naofumi’s revenue streams that I can remember with some (very assumption heavy) rates:

Daily monster grinding–5-7 transactions per week at an avg of 2-5 silvers per transaction

6 avg transactions per week x 3.5 avg silvers per transaction = 21 silvers per week

21 silvers x 52 weeks = 1,092 silvers per year

Transportation for people–assuming 5 rides per week, 1 silver per ride

5 silvers per week

5 silvers x 52 weeks = 260 silvers per year

Selling self-crafted enchanted gemstones–I have no sense for how much he makes on this, but let’s be conservative and assume he makes around 20 silver per month on this venture

20 silver x 12 months = 240 silvers per year

Selling medicine–10 silvers per person administered

Assuming he could make two medicine selling trips per quarter, planning around his other business ventures and heroic duties...

Assuming each trip Naofumi makes, he heals around 5 sick members of a village…

5 medicine administrations x 10 silvers = 50 silvers per trip

50 silvers x 8 trips per year = 400 silvers per year

Occasional heroic deeds–500 silver per deed (based on rate for taking care of the decaying dragon)

Assuming one heroic deed per quarter

4 heroic deeds per year x 500 silver = 2,000 silvers per year

All together, 3,992 silvers annually

3,992 silvers x 120 (exchange rate) equals...

a gross annual income of USD $479,040.

Naofumi’s Tax Bracket

The Shield Hero makes a pretty penny, huh? At this level of income, as a head of household, Naofumi’s tax rate is 35%, putting his taxes owed at $167,664. But Naofumi is smarter than that. It’s time for…

Deductions

A tax deduction is a dollar amount the IRS allows you to subtract from your gross income, making your taxable income lower. As a financially savvy guy with deep connections to a network of seasoned merchants, Naofumi absolutely knows how to play the tax game. Going through this Nerdwallet article of common tax breaks, here are some that the Shield Hero can take advantage of:

Head of household standard deduction–$18,000

American Opportunity Tax Credit (for money spent on college tuition, books, etc.–Naofumi is technically a college student!)–$2,500

Lifetime Learning Credit–$2,000

Child and dependant care tax credit (accounting for Filo and Raphtalia)–$9,000

Child tax credit (accounting for Filo)–$2,000

Adoption credit (accounting for Raphtalia and Filo)–$13,840

Charitable donations deduction

Assuming Naofumi donates about ⅕ of his income to charitable causes–$95,808

Medical expenses deduction (the one gold he spent for holy water to heal Raphtalia)–$4,500

Work related expenses (equipment for himself, Raphtalia, and Filo probably runs a few gold in a year, so let’s saaaaay…)–$20,000

Giving us a total deduction of $177,648

At long last, the end of this winding road has opened up to us. This brings the Shield Hero’s taxable income down to $301,392, which brings his owed taxes down to a grand total of...

USD $105,487.20

Conclusion

I just spent a ludicrous amount of effort figuring out the economic situation of a fictional character in a fictional world for your benefit, and I only ask two things in return:

Go watch The Rising of the Shield Hero–it’s a cut above most isekai, and has a lot to like about it if you like a blend of character driven action and systemic worldbuilding, and…

It’s that time again. As before, my rule for making these is that nothing I’ve had on here before can be on it again. As such, this isn’t so much a “favorite of all time” 3x3, but instead just things I want to call out and recommend.

Violet Evergarden - I have a complicated opinion about Violet Evergarden. I think it’s painfully predictable and emotionally manipulative, but at the same time it is a KyoAni tour de force of breathtakingly beautiful visuals, excellent VA, and a memorable soundtrack that I still listen to. It has to be seen to be believed. Just know going in that its writing will be very hit or miss.

Hatsukoi Zombie - Practically a high concept science fiction approach to the utterly absurd premise of floating imaginary girlfriends. I’ve spoken about this before, as I really admire its ambition, world building, and attention to detail. It details the intensely problematic implications that arise from an intangible projection of your desires following you around, only getting more complicated when it starts to become self-aware. Unfortunately loses steam towards the end, but it was a fun journey with a great cast of characters.

80k Gold Coins - Trash in all the right ways. A clever, selfish, and hypocritical 18 year old girl who looks like she’s 13 (this is a plot point), ends up in a medieval fantasy world, swindles everyone she meets, opens a shop where she upsets the balance of the world, and massacres an invading army of orcs and dragons with hired mercenaries using machineguns and rockets. It’s so dumb, but it’s so good.

Yuru Camp - The show so comfy that it actually made me want to go camping. Rin likes camping alone, but gets sucked into her school’s camping club. That’s pretty much it, it’s just executed extremely well with great music, fun characters, and memorable moments. It easily makes it into the comfy hall of fame.

Hitoribocchi - My favorite entry in the recently trending “ultra socially awkward girl” genre. Bocchi has incapacitating social anxiety and must befriend her whole class before she graduates middle school. It’s got a wonderfully charming cast of characters, a clear end goal, and character growth. Do your best Bocchi!

Non Non Biyori (S1) - I’m a sucker for comfy escapism, and NNB is one of the best. It takes place out in the middle of nowhere, in a town small enough that the 4 main characters, ranging from elementary to middle school, are all in the same class. It’s good simple fun, knows exactly what it is, and takes its time.

Asebi and Adventures of Sky World - Two parts Skies of Arcadia, one part Eureka Seven, Asebi is a fun (and finished!) adventure story set in a world with floating islands, airships, ancient lost technology, and androids. The characters are lovable, the plot actually goes places, characters grow, the world building is great, the fights are intense, the art style is distinctive, and enemies become friends. Despite an obviously rushed ending, I totally fell in love with this world and its characters. It really deserves an animated series.

Ookami Shounen - It’s difficult for me to articulate why I love this one so much, so I’ll just describe it instead. It’s about the relationship between 3 characters that each see a lot of development and growth. It’s the most interesting take on crossdressing I’ve read, while not even being about it. It touches on issues of gender, what it means, and its influence on the perspectives of yourself and those around you. It is perhaps the best exploration of androphobia I’ve read in the medium, not treating it as a punchline as many series do. The protagonist’s initial lie, and premise of the whole series, becomes too painful for him to maintain. There’s a beginning, middle, and end. Things happen. People change. If this sounds appealing to you, I highly recommend checking this one out. It has a bit of a trite start, but bear with it. It picks up quick.

Girls Last Tour - I’ve already written much on this one before. Girls Last Tour is one of my favorite anythings I’ve ever watched/read. It’s beautiful, melancholic, haunting, and contemplative. It follows what may very well be the last two people on Earth as they roam around a long dead world doing their best to survive and make the most of their situation. Despite its premise, it’s a very comfy and peaceful end of the world, but every once in a while you’re reminded what that really means. I cannot praise it enough. Watch it, then read the comics.

However, his notions of solitude were quickly destroyed by the entrance of the most prominent man in town and his moody son, leaving Yuuri's life changed forever. Harvest Moon AU. Until My Feet Bleed and My Heart Aches by Reiya Rating: Explicit Status: WIP - a breath away from being complete; 147k words Summary: A single event changes the course of Yuuri's life, throwing him into a bitter rivalry with Viktor Nikiforov that spans across his entire skating career.
