sometimes i think about the fact that we, as individuals, are aware of the existence of more humans than any of our ancestors. i haven’t done much extensive research on the topic, but from what i’ve gathered, we absolutely weren’t designed to know as many people as we do. we evolved to live in small groups, not consume content made by quite literal billions of other people.

so if connection doesn’t come easily, you’re not alone. we’re all trying to adapt to a social setting our minds probably aren’t entirely equipped for.

love those close to your heart. love those you find your connection in. i think that’s the best way to carve your corner of peace in today’s overcrowded world.

Turn further inwards. Look at your mind—see the glass mosaic stained colors for which there are no words? What picture does it make? Where has it cracked, and where has it been repaired? What is damage and what is art? Think these things, feel them not as conscious thought but as understanding. Know these answers, wordlessly. Throw yourself into these answers like a warm blanket—let the glass drape over you, flow like water. Let your mind shatter into that stained glass. Don’t fight it.

Stop thinking. Be.

Be yourself. Be yourself, the flawed you, the beautiful you, the perfect you. Know the answer to the question, see the cracks in the pavement and the colors off-key in the mosaic and know that there is no failing. Stand outside yourself, see that work of art, admire it for a moment. That art is you, the admirer and the mosaic and the glass and the building and all of it, feel yourself spiral into crescendo as you finally realize.

Step back for a moment. See it all. Look into that crystal-clear mirror you have just made.

See yourself. See forgiveness.

And see the rest of us standing behind you, ready to cheer you on.

Look around the room one more time. Left. Right. Ahead.

And smile. You deserve that.
