I work at a music store u can’t just ask me this. When my coworkers play it’s the saxophone or the flute, when the boys in the repair shop are testing repairs and they harmonize with each other or try to outplay one another it’s the bassoon or the trombone or whatever they’re fixing at the moment. I want to be a famous author, so kind of. But I want to still retain my anonymity and not have my real name and face attached to stuff. Yoko Taro gives me hope in that regard, because he’s rather famous but any information we know about him, we know on his terms. That’s how I want to live.

I usually listen to video game OSTs, and most of the ones I listen to are so genre-blending so it’s hard to pin down. Most of it is instrumental, but I’m not opposed to music with vocals. Genres aren’t cohesive, so I’d say “music that makes you want to punch robots to” and “music that makes you want to talk to friends to”. J-rap is pretty good though.

Hell no!

One.

I toss and turn before going to sleep and while asleep, but my back seems to be consistent.

I think there was one person in school who had a thing for me but they were gay and at the time I thought I was straight, so I paid them no mind. There was also someone who said “X likes you”, but I didn’t know who X was so I said “cool” and went on my way. I was also propositioned once in middle school, but that’s less “secret admirer” and more “sexual harasser”.

I think so.

For good people, yes. For bad people, no.

Yeah. I remember playing Undertale and my little sister was nearby, and I decided to voice all the characters. I had a lot of fun!

I have no idea. Either those sneakers, or the heavy winter jacket I got when I was in Colorado. Both were gifts, so I never saw the pricetag, but my Dad said they were pretty nice-looking.

Oh god here come the bad memories. I’m heavily abbreviating and redacting information to protect the identities of me and all involved, but in Colorado I met someone in middle school who more or less fit all my parameters for “ideal partner”. But I was terminally nervous and I didn’t want to ruin our friendship, so I left it at that. Eventually I had to abruptly leave the state for reasons I don’t want to get into, and all a week or so later I made a Facebook account and found all my friends. My contact with my crush was the most constant. Eventually, I was talking with a different buddy, and they mentioned romantic problems. I mentioned I had some too, and they eventually ferreted it out of me. They told me I should confess, and I said no, both because I want to remain friends, and because I can’t do a long-distance relationship. They told me they’d go behind my back if I didn’t, and I warned them not to. Five minutes later, I get messaged by my crush. To put it short, it wouldn’t work out. I stopped talking to both, and was pretty depressed afterwards, to the point where I couldn’t feel any romance, sexuality, or companionship towards anybody. I got over it sometime later, and I think I realized I was bi around the same time. I kind of wish I could smooth things over, but it’s been so long I don’t think it’s an option anymore. Plus Facebook has a horrible interface and is terrible so I really don’t want to.

I keep forgetting that I'm old.

ITT Tech melted down nearly ten years ago, and a lot of folks on Tumblr were in elementary school for that, so let's talk about predatory trade and training schools.

A note: most of the statistics and information I'm citing about ITT Tech was published by the school (as they were legally required to) in this 2013-2013 school catalogue. Page numbers cited refer to this PDF.

ITT Tech was a private, for-profit trade/training school that had campuses across the US and claimed to provide education and training for technical work; they offered degrees in several subjects, including several IT degrees, nursing degrees, construction management.

Now, from the top it's important to know that the student body of ITT tech was different than the average college or university - about 70% of the students were men, and most of the students were older than their late 20s, often with a full time job and kids. So generally you're looking at returning students who are the breadwinners for their families who are looking to make a better income and work while they're in school - so, not a demographic that a traditional college environment will work for. These students couldn't come in to daytime classes or spend four years at an academic institution.

ITT tech offered 4 12-week terms per year that had flexible class schedules and the bachelor's programs they offered took 14-15 terms to complete (so it was still about four years) or 7 terms for associate's degrees. The lowest cost for any of their programs was $47k, with several programs costing up to $100k (132). The median loan debt for their students was between $22k and $47k (136).

Some other info: On-time graduation for 4-year schools for mainstream college students is pretty high (around 60%), and on-time graduation for community college students is very low (about 13%). The reasons that community college rates are so low are varied - some students don't "graduate" they transfer, some students aren't *aiming* to graduate from community college but just enjoy attending classes, some students graduate or transfer very late because they are working or caring for family members and didn't plan on graduating after 2 years (I spent five years at a community college when I was getting my BA; this was not at all unusual).

On-time graduation for private, for-profit colleges is about 30%, and ITT Tech fit this range (144), which is sort of a problem because at least the people 'dropping out' of community colleges weren't paying $50k to do so, and the "on time" graduation rate for some of ITT's programs was as low as 5%. Student retention rates (the number of students who return after a term at school) for 4-year schools is around 75%, and for community colleges it's about 58%. The retention rate for ITT Tech was 37% for full time students and 25% for part-time students which means that between 60 and 75% of its students dropped out of their studies from term to term (145).

Of course, the institution doesn't carer if you've dropped out if they already have your money. 64% of ITT students were receiving Pell Grants and 31% were taking out federal loans to pay for school (144).

And that's what eventually ended up fucking ITT Tech: their students had very high default rates on their loans, with over 20% going into default by the second year of their loans.

And the reason they were going into default was that they had paid for job training from ITT Tech and in a lot of cases they found out that they had graduated with a degree that had done essentially nothing to prepare them for the field. They couldn't transfer units from ITT Tech to other schools, they had been misled about what an ITT degree would prepare them for (being told particularly that an ITT associate's degree in criminal justice administration could get them a forensic investigator job in spite of having no science training), some students who had felony records weren't informed that they wouldn't be able to find jobs in their field of study.

And as a result of all of this, the Obama administration restricted federal loans to for-profit schools generally and ITT in particular. That tanked ITT's stock price (and you should ALWAYS be concerned if your school is publicly traded because that means they care about shareholders more than they care about students) and ITT shut down a few months later with students unable to transfer to other schools and stuck holding useless degrees and loans - there has been a forgiveness program for federal loans, but a lot of students were stuck paying for private loans (there's a class action suit still going on about it).

Not all trade schools are like ITT tech. Most trade schools aren't, actually. But any time you start looking at a for-profit institution for education or certification you HAVE to look at how they make their profit, and you have to keep predatory institutions like ITT in mind.

ITT existed to pressure vulnerable students into taking out loans to make money for their shareholders. If you're looking at a for-profit welding school or dental assistant program or nursing training or construction management school, think about how the school makes money. Ask yourself what might prevent you from getting a job in those fields and ask how the school addresses those issues among their students. Look into what standard training/education is for that field, and ask yourself if the school is promising something that's too good to be true in terms of time saved or jobs available.

Anyway. Take care of yourselves, buds.

Could you elaborate more on trade schools being money sinkers that don't give you relevant experience? I always thought they were more straightforward and hands on.

You need to make sure that it's an accredited trade school that is not for profit. ITT tech and DeVry were trade schools, but they were also scams that were screwing students out of money.

I know someone who runs a welding school that offers the same certification that a community college a few miles away does - the community college program takes at least two years and costs about three thousand dollars; the welding school offers the degree in under a year but at a cost of about thirty thousand dollars.

There are a LOT of trade schools that DO grant the certificates they claim to, but that are overpriced or offer poor training opportunities, so if you're considering going to a trade school you need to check it against other local schools, make sure it offers certifications appropriate in your area, and compare its cost to other schools - if there is a public trade school or a community college with a training program for trades locally, those are a good place to get a baseline for what to expect.

Sometimes the expensive trade schools are worth it, sometimes they're all that's available in your area, but before you go to ANY school you should make sure that it is respected by the people hiring in that field (hoo boy, do I know a lot of people who wasted money on scam degrees from Mt. Sierra College who can't put their school on their resume) and that it meets the minimum certification or diploma requirements for you to find work.

My son is eighteen months old and is really into Disney’s 2017 remake of Beauty and the Beast. I’ve seen the opening 20 minutes at least 40 times in the month since it came out on Bluray. In it, you are introduced to the powerful and confident war-hero Gaston and his sycophantic lackey LeFou. LeFou does anything Gaston wants, and Gaston’s flippant treatment of LeFou would eventually push his biggest fan away. Throughout media, the villain’s lackey is the most visible example of just how much of a jerk the villain is. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, never ones for subtlety, decided that Magneto’s toadie should be a visual manifestation of this trope and gave us Toad.

Ray Park (X-Men)

The English born Mortimer Toynbee had a troubled childhood. While his mutant abilities wouldn’t manifest until adolescence, his disfigurement was there from the start. He was a short, round man with a blemished face who no one wanted to be around. His parents abandoned him and the orphans were horrible to him. They called him stupid, they called him ugly, they called him a freak. One man saw potential in him. He told Mortimer that he was part of something special, he was homo superior. Mortimer Toynbee took the mutant name Toad and followed Magneto to the bitter end.

Magneto created his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants with Toad, Mastermind, and the twins Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Toad became obsessed with the Scarlet Witch, almost as much as he was obsessed with Magneto. Magneto brought his Brotherhood to the South American nation of Santo Marco and took over the country handily. The X-Men stopped them and Toad blamed everything on infighting in the group. Magneto was unmoved by his plea and began to verbally abuse Toad. While some members of the Brotherhood would never stand of that, Toad had nowhere else to go.

Jack Kirby and Paul Reinman

Toad stayed loyal to Magento through most of the Silver Age until the master of magnetism was captured by The Stranger. Toad was left rudderless. He tried seducing the Scarlet Witch but her new Avengers teammates thwarted him. He tried to get revenge on the X-Man Angel, but he lost time and time again. Toad decided it was time to end it all. Life as a toadie wasn’t worth living. He walked to the ledge of a building in Manhattan and readied himself to jump.

Sal Buscema, and Joe Rubinstein

As he stepped off the ledge, egged on by unsympathetic onlookers, Mortimer was snatched up by your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Toad was moved by Spidey’s compassion and decided to make himself Spider-Man’s new partner. Spider-Man was less than pleased with the turn of events but Toad wasn’t sure why. Toad had been told that he was clingy, but he really didn’t see it. Another person was upset that Spider-Man had a high hopping partner and Frog-Man, son of the supervillain Lead-Frog, came to exact his vengeance. The amphibious men battled as a confused Spidey tried to control the damage. The brawl only got worse when the Spectacular Spider-Kid tried to claim that he was the best qualified Spider-Partner. Spider-Man’s level head final prevailed and he inadvertently convinced the rotund character to form a new super squad known as the Misfits.

Sal Buscema, and Joe Rubinstein

Eventually, Toad realized that evil will always triumph, because good is dumb, and left the Misfits to form his own Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Toad played the long game with this plan, working with Gideon of the Externals to take down the newly formed X-Force. He blackmailed Karl Lykos into once again becoming Sauron and formed an alliance with Masque of the Morlocks. The Brotherhood surprised X-Force at their base and was even able to critically injure Cannonball but they were soundly defeated in the end.

Rob Liefeld and Steve Buccellato

Toad kept a low profile until he learned about Magneto’s death and the destruction of Genosha. He took a pilgrimage to the island and leading the charge to build a monument there in honor of Magneto. When Xorneato revealed his master plan to rule the world, Toad stood loyally by. Not questioning why his master was now brutally murdering hundreds of humans. When the X-Men can to the rescue, as they are want to do, Toad leaped into action, only to be shot in the knee by Fantomex. Toad snuck away before Xorneato’s death and avoided the reproductions of his actions.

Phil Jimenez, Andy Lanning, and Chris Chuckry

After M-Day, Toad briefly joined the mutant refugee camps on the lawn of the X-Mansion and left when they were set free during the Civil War. He followed the mutant nation to San Francisco and participated in the riots against Norman Osborn’s rule. He even joined the X-Men on Utopia during the Nimrod attack of the Second Coming. When the X-Men divided, Toad begged Wolverine to take him in and he became the janitor at the Jean Grey School.

Billy Tan, Andres Mossa, and Rob Steen

Most people didn’t appreciate Toad’s work at the school. They saw him as unworthy of their attention. Everyone except Husk. She had been struggling to keep her personality under control when she shed her skin and Toad was willing to listen to her. He fell in love. When Husk left to join the Hellfire Academy, Toad too turned villain and followed her. He helped Quentin Quire take down the organization from the inside, but the X-Men were done giving him second chances and fired him. Husk took pity on him. She didn’t remember much of their relationship, a side effect of her powers, but she could see that he really cared for her. She offered to take him out of coffee, but Toad knew that deep down, he was as much a monster on the outside as the inside. He couldn’t put Husk through that. So he ran off into the sunset, wanting to hurt her now rather than let hew down later.

Pepe Larraz and Matt Milla

Toad took the outbreak of M-Pox harder than most. He was confused, depressed, and as far as he knew, a terrorist who used to beat him up attacked the life blood of another race. Anti-mutant sentiment was fiercer than ever, and Toad couldn’t hide. He turned to the bottle, and, after months, he developed a plan. He found the teenage Cyclops and captured him in the catacombs of Paris. If he killed this Cyclops now, wouldn’t that fix everything? He beat Scott within an inch of his life, but the X-Man escaped. And Toad was left alone in the dark.

Must Read

My recommendation was this close to being Amazing Spider-Man #266, where Toad and Frog-Man fight for Spider-Man’s love, but it doesn’t encompass what Toad has traditionally been. X-Men: Evolution did though. That series portrayal of the Brotherhood is the best realization of the team, Toad included. Toad is just an unloved, dirty kid following the only people to give him a second look. The Brotherhood in that series is just the X-Men without any mentorship or support. They live in a rundown house, only have each other, and are more interested in being left alone than taking over the world. Plus Toad gets his own theme song where they spell out his name. Pick up the first Toad-centered episode on Amazon!

Ranking

Villains, especially members of villain teams, are hard to rank. They are often less characters than they are one-note obstacles. Thanks to a history that stretches further than almost anyone, Toad has been given chances to live in the limelight more, but he is still largely defined by being a pathetic toadie. I like him less than a villain like Omega Red, but more than his fellow Brotherhood member Mastermind. I don’t think he is an interesting as Surge or Shatterstar but his history ranks him higher than a footnote like Skullfire. That places Toad as the new number 60 in the Xavier Files.
