I hate to say it, but you’re bringing into this discourse from the outside that is out of scope with what I’m talking about. All that post is about is how these things relate to me, my immediate surroundings, and the media I consume and produce i.e. the only things I’m comfortable making judgements about, b/c I’ve got the context for them on-hand all the time.

And if my post didn’t make it clear, I have a hard enough time trying to figure out why sometimes when I’m making something that’s bad, instead of concluding it’s better to stop, I will keep working on it. If I can’t even make that distinction for myself, the person I know best, I’m not willing to judge anyone for anything but the consequences of what they do, and even those can be maddeningly vague.

Outfit: White sleeveless hoodie with orange trims and inside, elbow-length grey tactical gloves, purple body armour and gauntlets with wire shooters, gray fatigues and white tankie boots. Mirrored motorcycling goggles and a white headband with orange Moiré pattern on the edges.

Powers: Wave manipulation -- ability to control systems that can be expressed as a waveform, including light, sound, subatomic and brainwaves. Can affect the wavelength as well as the amplitude -- smaller changes harder than big ones. Primarily used to make things vibrate very fast for enhanced concussive strength, and to warp and shatter things.

Y'know that Batman is mentally ill himself? Nolan movies fucked him over, and the world is full of ableism, but it's not just privileged man beating on people who need help. Animated series Batman is best Batman.

When written well, that’s how Batman is, like in the Animated Series. Like, if things were slightly different, it’d be Batman holding banks hostage, he could have gone down that path. And Batman knows that, in well-written narratives.  

Unfortunately the current pop culture idea of Batman isn’t that he’s also mentally ill, it’s that he’s a badass who beats up “cr*zies.” He’s this macho ideal who growls a lot, not much psychological exploration going on, if any, of Batman himself. Which is a real shame in my opinion, because we need mentally ill heroes, and what we’re left with is a bunch of mentally ill villains, which sends a pretty nasty message.

What I also find troubling is the use of Arkham in more recent pieces of the Batman canon, such as the tv show Gotham. It remains relatively unchanged from its old twisted images, an old fashioned “asylum” somehow in modern times, where legitimately dangerous criminals and average citizens alike are thrown in together and given inadequate medical care. Not out of a genuine exploration and critique of the poor mental health care practices in America, but due to lazy writers who just write “Arkham Asylum, cast a bunch of people to mumble nonsense on camera, that’s fine” and call it good.
