Here it is, folks -- my favorite album of all time. Sprained Ankle by @julienrbaker came by me at an emotionally harrowing time for me; I was suicidal, so anxious I couldn't leave my house, and couldn't even look my loved ones in the eye from how much shame I carried inside me. What this record provided was an anesthetic -- a rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic one, composed of songs that at one moment sound like a desperate cry for help and a jubilate aphorism at another. I still listen to it regularly and it still imbues me with the same feelings of solace in the face of acute existential dread -- no record has come close for me in producing the same effect. I'm aware that Julien's sophomore effort Turn Out the Lights -- another great record -- has possibly overshadowed Sprained Ankle due to its wider listener base. I deeply implore everyone to check it out if you are a fan of hers and have yet to listen to it or not even a fan at all -- this needs to be considered among the greats; not just as a contemporary great. Thank you Julien for your beautiful gift -- I will cherish it until the day I perish from this fragile, immovable world. Also, thank you to @richard1595 for sharing the Audiotree session she did all those years back. VENOM PRISON “SAMSARA” // ALBUM OF THE YEAR // Not enough good things can be said about Venom Prison’s efforts to rise out of the underground. Besides strategically plotting tours with some of the scene’s biggest names and putting in the field work, the band has been instrumental in crafting their art sinew by sinew, weaving together intense songwriting, sandwiched alongside strong packaging and layered with animated artistic expressions, most notably in the form of their past two records. “Samsara” is a ming-bending release. All the elements of traditional death metal are there, and the band’s progressive influences are noted while not blatantly overshadowing each variable of the songs’ composition. There’s a unique hue to the tracks, with each one coming out like a major can of ass whooping through auditory assault. But it would be a drastic oversight and a horrible omission not to highlight Larissa Stupar and the breath of fresh air that she breathes into the effort. After years out-of-print, 6131 Records are excited to announce the reissue of Rotting Out's now-classic first full length 'Street Prowl'. Originally released in 2011 and almost instantly considered a perfect continuation of the Southern California hardcore/punk sound pioneered by Suicidal Tendencies and Pennywise, 'Street Prowl' has aged incredibly well, still sounding as fresh and urgent as the day it came out. This reissue features updated artwork and layout, but after much debate, it was decided that to tinker with the sound of the album would be blasphemous.
