Beginning of last volume of my 40’s I guess. It’s Saturday.

So, since Gay Pride  Parade in San Fransisco is June 27, from now until my birthday on June 20th will be a study of my first 50 years and of gaydom at large!

here's what I've learned to never pay full price for, because people are giving these items away for free or almost free on Craigslist, Nextdoor, Facebook, at Goodwill, and on eBay (which has a local pickup section) in every sufficiently populated location in the USA.

cost of acquiring these items ranges from "carrying it home from the sidewalk" to "getting a friend with a car to help you pick it up" which is the same amount of effort as going to IKEA for worse quality that costs more, with the notable exception of it being a pain in the ass to coordinate with craigslist sellers, and you often have to wait and watch for what you want to actually show up. it took me about a year to find an acceptable gamer chair left out on the sidewalk, for example. but they cost $100+ new, so I chose to wait.

a lot of this stuff is the kind of thing you don't necessarily intend to keep, just to use in transitional housing or until you can afford a better one.

1. printers of any kind. basic office inkjets are free. ink is easily refillable or has generic ink cartridges way cheaper than brand name for any inkjet up to about 2015, not sure how difficult the newer smart printers are to hack but there's no reason to own a newer one because printing technology has not improved since about 2005. you want a color laser for making zines and wheatpastes? it's on Craigslist RN and someone's mom is desperate to get rid of it

6. bookshelves, nice oak bookshelves that don't bend like al dente spaghetti when you put books on them, are rotting on sidewalks rn because they didn't fit in someone's house. go get them

7. scanners. I find a working scanner by a dumpster at least once a quarter, and I don't pick them up because I already have one that I picked up from a dumpster years ago

8. hot tubs. everyone thinks they want a hot tub and that the maintenance and upkeep will be worth it, and they are wrong. Craigslist.

9. sofas, with the caveat that if you are in a bedbug region like New York State you need to be very confident in your bedbug screening skills

10. quality leather shoes. these last forever and are expensive new. eBay is best for these

11. plates, glassware, silverware. all of these are able to be sterilized to whatever standard you feel comfortable with but if you eat in restaurants you've already put a fork in your mouth that hundreds of people have drooled on so try not to fool yourself

12. televisions and computer monitors

13. houseplants. similar to the bedbug warning above, you need to screen these for pests like fungus gnats and mealybugs

14. dressers, wardrobes, china hutches, cabinets, chests of drawers, etc

I don't like secondhand used mattresses but unstained, unused mattresses are surprisingly common, especially since the foam mail order mattress boom started and people keep getting told by the mattress companies to just get rid of/keep any mattresses they want to return for flaws or wrong sizes or whatever. bedbug warning on this obviously

19. sheets and towels. you gotta launder them obviously

20. basic clothing, especially for kids. normie type clothing is so numerous people often just throw them away because they can't get anyone to take them

21. kitchenware like cooking utensils and pots n pans. don't use chipped or scratched Teflon/nonstick if you can help it. everyone needs one basic steel chef knife, which can be sharpened and maintained indefinitely. people throw these away CONSTANTLY

22. household consumables like laundry soap and dish soap. people often accidentally buy the wrong brand, scent, or develop allergies and want to get rid of extra

23. pet supplies like collars, leashes, dog crates, litter boxes, litter itself, dog beds, toys, carriers, etc

24. medical equipment of all kinds. people who take care of all kinds of patients end up with tons of leftover, sealed, miscellaneous stuff when that person recovers or dies, and they often give it away. adult diapers, hospital beds, IV stands, crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, fracture boots and splints, knee braces, canes, catheter packs, ice packs, heat packs, sterile paper sheeting, gauze, slings, over-the-door stretching and rehab pulleys, mattress protectors, etc

25. washers and dryers, both the basic household cube type and the small twin tub or rock tumbler type. people upgrade these when the old ones are still working, just squeaky or a little weird or sometimes just old

26. vacuum cleaners. secondhand ones are sort of icky but you can get rid of the ickiness by wiping them down with a rag and isopropyl alcohol inside and out. use an exacto or utility knife to slice off the hair and string wrapped around the roller. buy a new filter on Amazon. people throw away vacuums that work perfectly all the time because they don't actually know how to clean them out or do maintenance. bedbug and pet hair warning obviously

31. any kind of exercise equipment including stationary bikes, ellipticals and weights/weight benches

32. any kind of piano. there's a grand on my local Craigslist for free rn

39. rugs. most of my rugs are sidewalk finds. rugs will almost always be dirty. a decent consumer grade rug cleaner costs under $100, it's cheaper to just buy one if you have the space to store it. flushing the scavenged rug with soap, hot water, vinegar, alcohol, etc will clean almost anything but huge bedbug and allergen warning on this item

Sugababes - Overload 2000

"Overload" is the debut single of British girl group Sugababes. It was released on 11 September 2000 as the lead single from the group's debut studio album, One Touch. At the time, the group consisted of young teenagers Siobhán Donaghy, Mutya Buena and Keisha Buchanan. "Overload" was co-written by Sugababes together with the song's co-producers Cameron McVey, Paul Simm and Jony Rockstar.

"Overload" reached number 6 on the UK Singles Chart and was nominated for "Best British Single" at the 2001 BRIT Awards. It peaked at number 15 in Ireland, number 3 in Austria for two consecutive weeks, number 3 in Germany, number 5 in Switzerland, and number 2 in New Zealand. So I noticed that 15's Sonic was red in Rogue, and that sent me fully down the rabbit hole. So this is part 1 of some rambly connections.

In S1 (2005) the time vortex was blue for journeys into the past and red for journeys to the future.

In S2, 10 usually wears a brown tie with a white/light shirt in the present/future, and a blue shirt with no tie in the past.

TWO HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAYS

There are two main Holocaust remembrance days:

Yom HaShoah, the Jewish Holocaust remembrance day, was first commemorated in 1951. It is observed on the 27th of the Hebrew month of Nisan and falls on the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day was not established by the international community until 2005 and falls on January 27, on the anniversary of the Soviet liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

These two separate commemoration days are emblematic of two very different approaches to Holocaust education: one which centers the experience of the primary victims of the Holocaust -- Jews -- and another which instead highlights the supposed saviors of the Jews.

HAS HOLOCAUST EDUCATION FAILED?

Holocaust denial, revisionism, inversion, and distortion are widespread today. 

Recent surveys show deeply disturbing trends among Gen-Z; for example, a 2020 comprehensive survey by the Claims Conference found that 36% of respondents believe “less than 2 million” Jews were murdered in the Holocaust. In New York state, nearly 20% of millennials and Gen-Z believe that Jews caused the Holocaust. 

Likewise, in 2023, the Claims Conference found that 23% of Dutch millennials and Gen-Z believe the Holocaust is a “myth” or “exaggerated.”

According to the latest Anti-Defamation League Global 100 survey of worldwide antisemitism (published in January of 2025), only 48% of people worldwide “recognize the Holocaust’s historical accuracy.” Among the 18-34-year-old demographic, the findings are even worse: only 39% recognize the historical accuracy of the Holocaust.

In the United States, most states do not have mandatory Holocaust education, but even when they do, there exists no standardized curriculum, which means the mandatory education often falls short.

THE PROBLEM

In the first few decades after the Holocaust, there was little interest in the Holocaust. Immediately following liberation, the world responded with shock and horror to the grotesque imagery coming out of the Nazi death camps. But then they moved on quickly, preoccupied by the Cold War and other issues. 

Meanwhile, many Jewish Holocaust survivors were afraid to center -- or even talk about -- their experiences. There was great stigma and shame associated with being a Holocaust survivor, including in Israel. Many Israelis resented Holocaust survivors, (incorrectly) believing that the only way they could have possibly survived the Nazi genocide would be if they had collaborated with the Nazis (for example, as Kapos). Others (also incorrectly) resented the Jews in Europe for “not fighting back”). In Israel, this attitude only started to change after the 1961 Adolf Eichmann trial, when survivors spoke publicly of their experiences for the first time when they took the stand. 

Some survivors, like famous Nazi-Hunter Simon Wiesenthal, felt that Jews should de-emphasize the intentionally antisemitic nature of the Holocaust in order to get the non-Jewish world to care. In fact, you might’ve heard that 11 million people — 6 million Jews and 5 million others — perished in the Holocaust. This is a fake figure. Frustrated by the non-Jewish world’s lack of interest in the Holocaust, Wiesenthal created a figure to de-emphasize its anti-Jewish nature, knowing that the world would likely be more interested in the plight of others. Historians who knew him say that he chose the figure carefully: 5 million was a large number, but not a number large enough to obscure the 6 million Jewish victims.

NOW, HOLOCAUST EDUCATION OFTEN UNIVERSALIZES THE HOLOCAUST

The Holocaust was the industrialized slaughter of 6 million Jews and over one million Roma and Sinti by the Nazis and their collaborators. While the Nazis targeted many groups, only Jews — and in some countries, Roma — were subject to extermination as per the policies of the Final Solution. The Holocaust destroyed 66 percent of Europe’s Jewish population over the span of less than six years. 

Holocaust universalization is the tendency to treat the Holocaust as “public property,” stripping Jews of their unique experience. Instead, the Holocaust is treated as a tragedy that befell onto mankind, rather than a genocide that specifically and intentionally targeted Jews.

According to Holocaust historian Dr. Elana Heidenman, Holocaust universalization turns the Holocaust into “a joke, a mere moment in history that is no longer relevant unless through an exaggerated comparison, [and] terms of reference that have lost all depth and all substance.”

The universalization of the Holocaust erases Jews’ “right” to the memory and understanding of the Holocaust. The world largely treats the Holocaust as a “lesson to be learned,” rather than a genocide that decimated the Jewish community. How many people who invoke the Holocaust actually care about the plight of Holocaust survivors today? How many people who invoke the Holocaust are committed to unlearning their own antisemitic biases? Holocaust universalization almost inevitably always distorts basic facts about the Holocaust. It’s worth noting that Holocaust distortion is a form of Holocaust denial.

WHAT MAKES FOR EFFECTIVE HOLOCAUST EDUCATION?

(1) Effective Holocaust education must center the victims of the Holocaust. Beware of overemphasizing the experiences of saviors over the experiences of victims and survivors. 

After all, arguably, for Jews, the most enduring memory of the Holocaust is that the world failed us: not just the Nazis and their collaborators, but international institutions like the Red Cross and the Vatican, our own neighbors and friends, the non-Jewish anti-Nazi resistance, and even the Allies, who ignored the urgency of our plight until it was too late.

(2) Effective Holocaust education must provide specificity and context; it’s important for students to understand the specific historic and social conditions that allowed the Holocaust to happen. Most notably, students cannot adequately comprehend the Holocaust if they do not learn about the 2000 years of systemic European antisemitism that preceded it.

(3) Beware of universalizing the Holocaust. While it’s true that he Holocaust can teach us many valuable universal lessons about issues such as intolerance, fascism, and bigotry, it shouldn’t be taught only as a moral lesson for humanity; instead, students should also learn the lesson of the dangers of unfettered antisemitism.

(4) Effective Holocaust education must prioritize primary sources over fictional accounts.

UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITIONS THAT MADE THE HOLOCAUST POSSIBLE

In order for Holocaust education to be effective, it must always strongly emphasize the antisemitism that led to the Holocaust. 

You cannot divorce the Holocaust from the antisemitism that caused it. The Nazis persecuted Jews specifically based on antisemitic tropes and conspiracies that have been ingrained into the DNA of our societal institutions. The Holocaust wouldn’t have been possible without the 2000 years of antisemitism that preceded it. 

The Holocaust was possible because the Nazis animated the previously-existing and sometimes dormant antisemitism of German society and the societies of the countries they conquered. There’s a reason many of the worst massacres during the Holocaust were perpetrated not by the Nazis, but by collaborators. The Jedwabne pogrom comes to mind. There’s a reason the institutions that were supposed to protect human beings — ahem, the Red Cross — chose to look away at best and collaborate at worst. 

Again: without antisemitism, there wouldn’t have been a Holocaust. It’s imperative for Holocaust education to emphasize this point.

"NEVER AGAIN" MEANS UNDERSTANDING THAT THE END OF THE WAR DID NOT END ANTISEMITISM

Antisemitism did not end with World War II. In fact, after liberation, thousands of Jewish survivors were robbed and even murdered by their former neighbors in Eastern Europe when they attempted to reclaim their old homes. The first post-Holocaust pogrom was the Krakow pogrom, which took place in August of 1945. After that, pogroms spread to 11 other Polish cities.

The most infamous of these pogroms is the Kielce pogrom in 1946, when 42 Jewish refugees were murdered by a mob of Polish civilians following a blood libel. The refugees were horrifically beaten, shot, and even thrown out windows. A survivor of both the Holocaust and the Kielce pogrom later testified, “I would like to mention that as a former prisoner of concentration camps I have not gone through an experience like this. I have seen very little sadism and bestiality of this scale.”

Holocaust education that does not teach students to identify the persisting antisemitism in the world does an injustice to Holocaust victims, survivors, and the promise of “Never Again.” This includes recognizing how ancient antisemitic tropes, stereotypes, and conspiracies manifest today.

BL game magazine Cool-B will be ceasing publication this month

After 20 years, BL visual novel magazine Cool-B is publishing its final issue at the end of this month. As someone who was always looking forward to the new information featured in the magazine, I'm sad to see it go, though I do understand the reasoning behind it. Due to rising manufacturing costs, in 2024 Cool-B was re-branded to Cool-B Kiwami, and the publishing schedule was changed to quarterly instead of bi-monthly. So for some time, it seemed like the magazine would continue with this new schedule. However, unfortunately in October 2024, another announcement was made on their social media in which they mentioned that the magazine would end publication in January 2025, as the contract with their publisher was also coming to an end.

Compared to 20 or even 10 years ago, the BL visual novel market has changed a lot and the number of newly released games is much smaller nowadays. Despite that, Cool-B continued publishing information, working closely with BL visual novel writers and artists to publish short stories and illustrations. The opinions of fans were important to them too, as they would organize yearly popularity polls and included game sales statistics and information about which new games people were looking forward to the most. The magazine's editors always seemed passionate about their work and even in their final statement, they mentioned that they want to find a way to continue, though right now they are unsure how.

Cool-B started publication in 2005, though its predecessor Binetsu Ouji released its first issue in 2002. Around this time, there were several other magazines which published information about BL visual novels, which I've written about in this blog post. All of them were eventually discontinued, which resulted in Cool-B becoming the only BL visual novel magazine. The other day the official Twitter/X account revealed the cover of the final issue, and instead of featuring a single game on the cover, they decided to include all of the previous covers. The text "最終号:BLゲームは不滅です" roughly translates to ''Final issue: BL games are immortal" implying that there will always be BL game creators who are passionate about their projects who will continue making new games in the future. And I think they're right, as earlier this week Parade (known for NO, THANK YOU!!!, Room No.9 and Lkyt.) announced their fourth game "lesson" which is scheduled to be released this year. The cover of the final Cool-B issue also teases a completely new project by Yura from Tennenouji (known for Miracle No-ton, Luckydog1 and Friendly Lab) as well as a completely voiced remake of a BL visual novel that was released in 2001 called Seraphim Spiral. Carnelian's new project Tokyo Gentou (or Tokyo Phantasmagoria) is also scheduled to be released this year, as well as the second part of Ooe which many BL fans are looking forward to, as part 1 was incredibly well received.

Including the final issue, Cool-B published 118 issues of the magazine between 2005 and 2025. They also had their own otome game magazines, Sweet Princess and Bitter Princess. As it's a bit difficult to see what's on each cover in the image above, I uploaded another image which should make it a bit easier to see. I also compiled a list of all the games/game franchises featured on each cover which you can check below. Some official game titles are rather long, so sometimes I wrote the name fans typically use when they refer to these games, but I think you should still be able to find it on vndb (visual novel database) if you want to learn more about these games.

Some additional information which I thought was interesting -There are three games featured on the cover of the magazine that were never actually released and cancelled, which are White Shadow (2), Torus Zero (4) and New World Order (68), so you won't be able to find these on vndb as it unfortunately deletes these entries. I did include all three of them in a previous post about cancelled/unreleased BL visual novels if you want to check them out! (I just noticed all the typos in these older blog posts…please bear with me). Two of these game developers are still around, as Core recently returned as Procyon, and Holicworks still releases games, so perhaps some of their ideas were re-purposed, or scrapped for other ideas. There's actually a fourth game which hasn't been released yet which is Suito wa Hakumei featured on issue 104, though its status is currently unknown.

-In total, 31 of the covers feature characters from the Luckydog1 games, therefore Tennenouji is also the creator that was featured the most on the covers. Friendly Lab also has 3 covers (4 if you include the one with all of the Tennenouji game characters), therefore the total number of Tennenouji covers is 34, which is almost 40% of the covers. I'm assuming that Cool-B staff always worked closely with Yura, but Luckydog1 does have many different games, with the covers featuring Luckydog1, Gian-carlo's LUCKY HAPPY LIFE, Gian no Tame Nara Sekai o Kowasu, Luckydog1 + Badegg, Mr. Giancarlo and the Vita and Nintendo Switch ports of the first game. In the 117th issue, Yura did mention that the series was finished now with the release of the PC version of Mr. Giancarlo, and that she wants to focus on a completely different series now.

-The company with the second largest number of covers is Nitro+CHiRAL, with a total of 20 covers (about 23%). Among the Nitro+CHiRAL, games, DRAMAtical Murder has the most covers, advertising the first game, fandisc, anime and vita port. Of course, Nitro+Chiral is also known for its crossovers between their own games, so there are multiple covers which feature characters from different games together, promoting events such as the Chiral Night. Some of these feature the Chiral Night's mascot Naito-kun as well.

By the way, the magazine would always come with different postcards if you pre-ordered it from a specific website, and these postcards would feature new art from even more games, so fans had a lot of things they could collect. These were limited-edition, but you can still find people selling them second-hand on websites like Surugaya, Yahoo auctions, Mercari and more. Other than publishing magazines, Cool-B also released several artbooks, such as the Hashihime, Uuultra C, and Taishou Mebiusline official artbooks. I'm not quite sure what will happen to the sales of this as other stores like Stellaworth also sell them and they're often out of stock, but only time will tell.

To conclude this, I do hope they will be able to continue publishing information as they're clearly passionate about what they do. I always had a lot of fun guessing what kind of game would be on the next cover, as well as collecting postcards of games I liked. It's kind of sad that any future games won't have this, as the magazine would often publish original short stories and promotional material about these new games too. Even if the development of some games took a long time, it never really felt long as we would usually get updates every two months when Cool-B was released. Cool-B would often publish new chapters of manga too, such as the Paradise and Hashihime manga, so I do wonder what will happen to these and if they will be published somewhere else.
