I’m going to be posting regularly now about my second book out this year, #womeninrockwomeninromanticism, published by #routledge in #2022. It examines #womeninrock from #janisjoplin and #pattismith to #missyelliott using the historical insights and theoretical tools provided by the study of #romanticism. Chapter 1 by James Rovira establishes the theoretical basis for the whole collection. It starts out by looking at the status of music in Romanticism, which skyrocketed with the rise of instrumental music in the late 18th century especially #beethoven. #hoffmann’s review of Beethoven’s #5thsymphony is my starting point. I then go on to explain how that formed the basis of #schopenhauer’s philosophy, which placed will at the center of existence and made music the primary expression of will, and then explain how that conceptual move can completely change the status of women in western philosophy, which traditionally has not been great. I then go on to see how those ideas align with #feminist studies of #British Romanticism, and how those ideas can extend to women musicians today. It’s a conceptually dense chapter with a lot of moving parts. I feel like I’m still wrestling with it.
