When XØ- the debut from MCR guitarist Frank Iero's hardcore-punk side project LeATHERMOUTH- reaches the masses, you'll surely start seeing a gazillion comments from teenage girls raving, "OMG! Frank is sooooo hot! I love LeATHERMOUTH!" Were this record the product of just about anyone not involved with MCR, you could safely wager that most of said fans would run away from XØ as fast as humanly possible with their fingers wedged in their ears.

LeATHERMOUTH, who officially consist only of Iero on vocals and Rob Hughes on guitar, specialize in a particularly punishing form of hardcore that combines sludgy doom metal and harsh grindcore, topped off by Iero's ferocious screams and often twisted, eye-brow raising lyrics. Speed and fury are the name of the game here, and thus none of the album's 10 tracks break the three-minute mark (the disc's total running time is just over 21 minutes). While LeATHERMOUTH certainly aren't reinventing the wheel, songs with names like "I Am Going To Kill The President Of The United States Of America" and "Your Friends Are Full Of Shit" are far from dull. XØ's sheer brutality and shock value alone make the record the complete anti-My Chem experience, a perfect soundtrack for driving around with a corpse stashed in your trunk. Just everyday life, and things that affect us that people want to pretend doesn't exist: feelings of isolation and depression, and the way the world is going. There are other things too: "Catch Me If You Can" is based on the letters written by Jack the Ripper. It's basically about cutting up girls, which is always fun. [Laughs] A lot of the songs seem to be about killing girls.

What's the story behind "5th Period Massacre"?

Kids are killing each other in school, and people are very quick to condemn the entertainment industry, or the parents or the kids themselves, who must be "off." I'm not saying those aren't some of the reasons, but no one talks about the little fucking prick who calls the kid a "faggot" or beats him up every day, so he sees no way out other than going home and getting his father's gun.

How about "Sunsets Are For Muggings"?

It's about going to see my psychiatrist. Every appointment I had was at night, around sunset. It's about taking all the pills to make yourself better, yet never feeling normal, and knowing that everything you're saying is going in one ear and out the other. I've definitely had to deal with mental illness in my family; that's a very personal thing that I deal with on a daily basis. "Sunsets" is my way of saying that no one is looking out for you but yourself, and you have to consider that no one fucking cares.

Will teenage girls who are into My Chem be horrified?

That's the funny part. "Catch Me If You Can" for example, has some pretty harsh lyrics about women. The last half of the song says, "A gift from God doing the Devil's crimes/I'll set shit right one whore at a time." Watching a good handful of little girls singing that line with you is a little weird, and really fucking funny. The things that make me laugh are things that are horrendously awful, [like] people falling down or getting attacked by animals. If I can have girls singing back about cutting themselves up or setting themselves on fire, that's pretty much a good show.

Some people will say, "My Chem is huge. What's this guy's problem?"

There are a million things I can say are great about my life, and a million things that really fucking suck. I can't explain why I have a problem with depression or anxiety; I don't know, and nobody can tell me why, either. I just do what I can to stay sane on a daily basis, and [LeATHERMOUTH] are one of those things that help me, getting it all out on a record, and playing shows. The first tour we did was really refreshing, exhausting and cathartic, and I wasn't pissed off anymore. Bath school massacre - May 18th 1927

The attack itself began around 8:45am May 18th 1927 in which Andrew Kehoe firebombed his own farm and house using wired homemade pyrotol firebombs (right image) also murdering his wife Nellie Price Kehoe, placing her body in a wheelbarrow near their chicken coop. Kehoe then went on to detonate various explosives he had planted over the course of the previous summer within the north wing of Bath Consolidated school, with roughly an additional 230kg/500 lbs of explosives failing to set off in the southern wing (left image). Around 30mins after the first explosion, Kehoe drove up to the school and detonated explosives within his own truck, killing himself, Nelson McFarren (a retired farmer) and Cleo Clayton who was just 8 years old. The attacks killed 38 children, 6 adults and injured at least 58 other people.

Background:

After losisng the election for township clerk, April 5th 1926, Kehoe (according to his neighbor, Ellsworth) began his plot to blow up Bath Consolidated school. During this time, he bought: more than a ton of pyrotol (an explosive used by farmers); two boxes of dynamite; and a .30-caliber Winchester bolt-action rifle.

The school board member, M. W. Keyes stated:

"He was an experienced electrician and the board employed him in November to make some repairs on the school lighting system. He had ample opportunity then to plant the explosives and lay the wires for touching it off."

Having access to the school over the summer of 1926, Kehoe planted various explosvies underneath the school and, being a farmer, owning large ammounts of dynamite would not be viewed as suspiscious - with neighbors even reporting hearing explosions on the farm. After the attack, investigators recovered: a container of gasoline rigged with a tube in the school's basement; explosives in six lengths of eavestrough pipe; and three bamboo fishing rods concealed in the basement ceiling.

The day before the attack, Kehoe loaded the back seat of his truck with metal debris with the potential to produce shrapnel during an explosion, also buying new tires to transport explosives. Throughout the day, Kehoe made several trips to the school, the township, his house and also places he could buy additional explosives. At midnight, it was also reported a man (presumably Kehoe) could be seen walking into the school carrying objects inside.

Andrew Kehoe:

After graduating, Kehoe suffered a head injury in a fall and was semi-conscious or in a coma for a period of several weeks, returning to work on his fathers farm rather than continuing working as an electrician. Kehoe had a reputation for being tight with money, and was elected in 1924 as a trustee on the school board for three years and additionally treasurer for one year, arguing strongly for lower taxes. It is suspected the motives for the attack was an increase in his taxes, aswell as being defeated in the April 5, 1926, election for being town clerk. Kehoe's neighbor, A. McMullen, stated that Kehoe had seemingly stopped working on his farm altogether for most of the preceding year, and he had speculated that Kehoe was planning to commit suicide. Furthermore, his wife had become chronically ill with tuberculosis which, at the time, had no treatment - increasing Kehoes debt causing him to cease depositing into his mortgage and homeowner's insurance payments. Potentially sueding him further to commit the bombing.

The slaughter of Sandby Borg

Sandby Borg is an archaeological site on the island of Öland in south-eastern Sweden. It is a fortified settlement dating from the late Roman period, around the 5th century AD. The site has gained notoriety due to its tragic history and the remarkable state of preservation of the archaeological finds.

It was a small fortified settlement, known in English as a ringfort because of its circular structure. Such forts were common in Scandinavia during the migration period, used mainly for protection. The fortress at Sandby Borg consisted of a stone wall surrounding several houses and communal spaces.

The site was discovered in the late 20th century, but systematic excavations began in 2010. Archaeologists quickly found evidence of a violent event that would have occurred around 480.

The remains of at least 26 individuals, including men, women and children, were found at the site, many in positions indicating a sudden and violent death. Investigations suggest that the inhabitants of Sandby Borg were massacred, possibly by a rival group, and that the site was abandoned immediately after the attack.

Among the most important finds at Sandby Borg are valuables such as gold jewellery, brooches, Roman coins, glass beads and household items. These finds indicate that the community had access to luxury goods and was well connected to trade networks that extended into the Roman Empire.

The Sandby Borg site offers a unique window into the life and tragedies of Scandinavian communities during the migration period. Evidence suggests that the attack was premeditated and that the attackers did not loot the site, making the event an even greater mystery. This site is one of the few archaeological examples where a virtually intact crime scene from antiquity has been found, providing valuable information about the social dynamics and conflicts of the time.

Sandby Borg continues to be the subject of archaeological study and is an important source for understanding the history of pre-Viking Scandinavia, as well as the complex interactions between communities in the region during a turbulent period in its history.
