#Repost @52museums with @repostapp ・・・ In the opening decades of the 20th century, New York stood as the grandest expression of the country’s technological and financial world dominance. Joseph Stella’s monumental painting The Voice of the City of New York Interpreted (detail pictured) a panoramic, five‐paneled view of 1920s Manhattan, evokes the dizzying dynamism and awe‐inspiring spectacle of the city. Measuring over 22 feet long, The Voice of the City presents key New York landmarks at night, starting on the west side with the Battery, then moving to the middle of the island with Broadway and the skyscrapers, and ending in the east with the Brooklyn Bridge. Below the five panels are tunnels for trains, electricity and plumbing.⠀ ⠀ Stella, who immigrated to New York in 1896, interpreted American technology in religious terms, as conveyed in this work by the altarpiece format and deep, saturated colors that give the appearance of stained glass windows. ⠀ #Museum #52Museums #Newark #NewarkMuseum

Not Stratford’s “Blue Period,” but a cyanotype of the Great House, circa 1900, from the collection. Cyanotypes were popular well into the 20th century—most of them were drawings called “blueprints.”

#Repost @52museums with @repostapp ・・・ We're loving this Cross-Written Letter from 1815 ✍ ⠀⠀ Did you know that writing in different directions was a common method of saving paper and money before the first postal stamp was introduced?⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ When mail first became available to everyone in the 17th century, the price of a letter was paid by the receiver and was much higher if additional pages were used. So letters were ‘cross-written’, with writing at two or more different angles. It wasn’t easy to read, but it saved a few pennies. This continued until the Postal Reform in 1840.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ #postalmuseum #openingsoon #museums #london #newmuseums #history #postalhistory #52museums #exhibitions #heritage #attractions #interactives #galleries #archives #mail #letter #handwriting #crosswriting #writing⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Discover the #unexpected at @thepostalmuseum Opening in London, July 2017

#Repost @52museums with @repostapp ・・・ The 30,000+ artifacts in @AmericanJewishMuseum's collection illustrate more than 360 years of #Jewish life in the US. Take these #seltzer bottles, for instance! 💦 The name "seltzer" originated in Niederselters, Germany, where natural springs produced carbonated water. Jewish #immigrants brought their love of seltzer to the US. During the drink's heyday in the 1920s and 1930s, Jewish seltzer salesmen could be found throughout America offering "two cents plain," the slang for a bottle of seltzer with no syrup. #nationalmuseumofamericanjewishhistory #nmajh #52museums

#Repost @52museums with @repostapp ・・・ @Vejenkunstmuseum - The Danish painter Jens Vige was a part of the artist colony at Hammer Bakker north of Aalborg in Jutland, where also the sculptor Niels Hansen Jacobsen had a summerhouse. The wide, barren landscapes of northern Jutland were among Vige’s favorite subjects – the inland heaths portrayed in 1901 and the moon lit costal marshlands in 1909. He died young in 1912 – seven years after painting the self-portrait seen here. #52museums #vejenkunstmuseum #vejenartmuseum #denmark #artnouveau #symbolism #art #museum #culture #history #danishmuseums #artist #jensvige #danishpainting #painting #hammerbakker #aalborg

#Repost @52museums with @repostapp ・・・ And for our first #52museums post, we'd like to introduce you to one of @fineartsbelgium's enormous masterpieces. Our Museum dates back to 1801, a time when Belgium wasn't even Belgium yet. No other than Napoleon Bonaparte himself had it ordered as one France's departmental museums. So what is pictured in this over the top piece of Belgian extravaganza? 🇧🇪 On 24 September 1830, the proclamation "Aux citoyens de Bruxelles..." (To the citizens of Brussels) was signed, establishing a temporary (and very first!) Belgian government. And as always when forming a government in Belgium, it did not come without a good struggle and some unrest. This pyramidal composition provides a synthesis of the main events and actors of the Belgian Revolution, which will eventually lead to our country's independence. 📷 credits @elkevdende . . Gustaaf Wappers, Episode of the September Days 1830, on the Grand Place of Brussels 1835. Commissioned to the artist, Antwerp, 1835. Entered the Museum in 1877.
