ive been really busy and wasn't able to finish this in time for halloween! but i hope someone will enjoy these now regardless lol, more details and DL under the cut!
its no secret i like to obsessively pose scenes in sims 2 lol and i edited some various "movie" posters (they aren't real movies obv). I tried to keep them with a pretty true-to-sims-energy style. Some of them have video game energy and could be used in gaming stores too!

the posters come on artig and also surfing the universe for super collection peeps. Idk why I put them on a poster that isn't nearly the same aspect ratio, it made it way harder for no reason lol. The films are:

here's how the artig recolors look on various add-ons by @littlelittlesimmies . Sadly as you can see the posters get a bit cut-off on the artig poster add-on because I extended outside of artig's white border and didn't realize they got cut off until late in the process ;_;

i made the artig ones at 1024 originally so included them just in case someone wants hq textures. up close you can tell a difference, but from normal game distance they look essentially the same. So you can pick between 512 or 1024 in the folder.

Why I started using DXT1 texture format for TS2 CC again (sometimes)
In the past I discouraged ppl from using it. But it has one benefit, which TS2 CC creators shouldn't ignore: DXT1 textures are about half the size of DXT3. DXT1 is best for stuff that is not meant to be looked at from close distance - where you don't need high quality, but you need original texture - 1024x or even 2048x - to keep it crisp. Large and very large CC hood decor, for example.
There are two facts about textures that some ts2 cc creators and cc hoarders are probably unaware of:
Lossless compression (compressorizer etc) significantly reduces file sizes, but it does NOT help texture memory, because texture files get uncompressed before being stored in GPU texture memory cache
Byte size does NOT equal resolution. For example: Raw32Bit texture takes up around four times more space in texture memory cache than DXT5
DXT3 2048*2048 px takes up ~4MB, but DXT1 2048*2048, thanks to its harsh 8:1 compression, takes up only ~2MB of texture memory cache, which is an equivalent of two makeup textures 512*512 px Raw32Bit format (TS2 makeup creators' favourite :S ).
@episims posted a comparison of DXT formats here - but please note Epi compared texture sizes after those were compressorized.
To change texture format in SimPe you need to install Nvidia DDS utilities, which can be downloaded here (SFS).
*This is about GPU texture memory. As far as I know, it's unclear how internal TS2 texture memory works - does it benefit from lossless file compression or not? No idea. But IMO we don't have a reason to be optimistic about it :/ What we know for sure is - the easiest way to summon pink soup in TS2 on modern systems, is to make the game load large amounts of texture data (large for TS2 standards anyway) in a short amount of time.
DXT formats use lossy compression which affects texture quality - this compression matters for texture memory.
DXT1 512*512*4 (4 bytes per pixel) / 8 (divided by 8, because of 8:1 compression ratio) = ~131 KB
DXT3 512x512 px (4:1 compression) = ~262 KB
Raw32Bit 512x512 px = ~1MB
2048x1024 px DXT1 texture takes up around as much texture memory as 1024x1024 px DXT3 or DXT5 (non transparent*) = ~1 MB
*DXT5 has 4:1 compression just like DXT3 but it can store more data in alpha channel, and that allows for much better looking transparency (if smooth alpha is present, size is increased). DXT1 does not support transparency.
I don't want my game to look like crap, but if texture looks OK as DXT1, then why not use it. Aside from hood decor, I've been reconverting some wall and floor textures for myself to DXT1 recently, instead of resizing.
Some ppl might cringe on seeing 2048x2048 skybox textures but to me large texture is justified for such a giant object. I cringe at Raw32Bit makeup.
I'm slowly turning all Raw32 makeup content in my game to DXT5 (no mipmaps). I've edited enough of those to know, that quite often the actual texture quality is not great. If a texture has been converted to DXT3 at some point, alpha channel is a bit choppy. "Upgrading" such texture to Raw32 doesn't do anything, other than multiplying texture size by four. I don't know how 'bout you, but I only use one or two skyboxes at a time, while my sims walk around with tons of face masks on them, so it's a real concern to me. And don't make me start on mip maps in CAS CC. Textures more blurry on zoom-out, and at a price of 33% larger size? What a deal :S
Note: Raw8Bit (bump maps) / ExtRaw8Bit (shadows etc) are also uncompressed formats, but don't contain color data and weight around as much as DXT3.

Boda had gotten used to living with her uncle and Esthrid a lot quicker than expected. She also found an unexpected friend in the older woman. Their morning forays to fetch water from the well or dig up some fresh clay had become Boda's favorite part of the day.
Like her uncle, Boda had expected the daughter of a merchant to be unaccustomed to physical labour. But if that was the case, Esthrid never showed it.

One of those mornings the women met Bodowin and Fridwine at the clay gathering site. Bodowin wanted to know if Boda was behaving and being the help he expected her to be. Esthrid was quick to assure him that Boda was a joy to have around and an even greater help to her.

While the adults were talking Fridwine and Boda had run off to play with a small ball made out of leather and stuffed with wool, a gift from Bodowin to his eldest son.
Fridwine: "It's kind of weird, you not living with us..."
Boda: "Why? Do you miss my stories?" Boda teased him.
Fridiwne: "Well, not the scary ones. But some of them were really fun." He paused for a moment and then cautiosly asked: "Don't you miss us? Me, Deorwine and Osric? Faeder and modor?"

Hi. Can you please tell me, I'm a complete newbie and don't understand at all how to update my mods ( I have a cas room too) And how did you update to direct 11? Sorry for asking elementary questions and hoping for a reply or even a tutorial! I will be very grateful
hi there!! no worries! questions are all good :) dx11 is the default rendering api of the game now, so everyone on pc (except those who use intel graphics cards) will have their game automatically run it from now on, with a new in game setting to switch back to dx9.
so, the mods/cc affected are build stuff, buy stuff, and CAS rooms. CAS cc appears to be spared for now, (mostly) which is nice lmao
Most people's build/buy/CAS rooms are perfectly compatible with dx11, and function just as they did on dx9, the only difference is:
dx11 does NOT work for build/buy/CAS rooms mods that include image files (either .dds or .png) that have dimensions that aren't an exact x2 multiple of 128 (so 256, 512, 1024, 2048, etc) and will show that silly question mark with the funky colours.
so if any of your mods/build cc is affected (build cc thumbnails are also affected by this change) all you need to do is change your image files so that the dimensions are x2 multiples of 128, and not x3 multiples, or whatever else. You can do this manually, or use the experimental batch fix that sims 4 studio has, here is more info about that!

Followers gift part 2: Medieval magazines!

So, magazines didn't really exist until the 18th century. But before that, there were cheap, widely available publications - broadsides, chapbooks, pamphlets - that covered a wide range of subjects like news, true crime, political commentary, entertainment (some ballads were literally just existing poems set to music) and news-of-the-weird subjects like witchcraft and prophecies and that woman in England who claimed she kept giving birth to rabbits, and so on. A lot of the same subjects covered by Sims 2 magazines, in other words. They weren't done in periodical form, but neither are Sims 2 magazines, which are the same week after week.

So that was my initial model. I started out with monochrome woodcut prints from 15th- and 16th-century books and broadsheets, but my early attempt at defaulting the magazines made me think that color might be advisable to make the images easier to recognize at tiny sizes. That led me down a rabbit hole of medieval manuscript art, with the end result that some of the magazines are using art that is far, far too lavish for a mass publication. But it's aesthetically pleasing!

All the magazines have unique interiors, unlike the originals. Most of the text is just Lorem Ipsum (I did include a bit of Chicken Little/Henny Penny in the children's magazine, because one of the illustrations cried out for it) so you're not missing anything by not being able to read it. I used Simlish TrueBadoor for all the text, titles and articles alike.

Man, that floor is pixelated. Hestia and Osanyin need to remodel their foyer. Above you see the entertainment/fashion/sports magazine, with a focus on music. That cover, like many of the others, dates to just a bit before 1500; that was my target zone, though I wasn't super-strict about it. I may well do another default later, with earlier artwork - the Codex Manesse has a lot of good candidates - but I'm a little burnt out right now, which is why I haven't followed through with the hobby magazines.

I replaced the catalog descriptions and titles in the UI, too. Mostly not very period-accurate, except for the judgmental tone towards frivolity and avarice, though I did sometimes use period titles complete with the spelling of the time.
You can see one cover for "All That Glittereth" up above, but it will display a different one when you bring the magazine home; this is normal, if annoying. Maxis for some reason included two money-themed publications and then mixed them up. The UI in use shows a sim buying the magazine in an OFB owned business, but it should look a lot the same in an unowned, NPC-run lot.
And as you can see from the image at the top of the post, I also did a recolor - two recolors, in fact - of this default replacement magazine rack by Motherof70, with my magazine covers. The rack has nine magazines on display and there are only six hobby magazines, so I included the alternate cover for Rat Race and two of the hobby magazine covers (or at least early versions of them. I change my mind a lot.)

All the textures are 512 x 512, except for the magazine rack itself, which is 1024 x 1024.
Acknowledgements: These were all built on the template of Lolabythebay's 1920s magazine defaults, and some parts - the page edges and spines - are used barely altered. I adjusted the colors on the spines but kept recycling the underlying graphic. I would never have made sense of the Maxis mapping, let alone been able to increase the resolution of the texture file, without her hard work.
If not for Xia's hobby magazine defaults, I'd have had no idea where to start on looking for the catalog descriptions to replace them.
And I probably wouldn't have thought of doing the magazines at all if not for the default rack.
As for art credit: I've been painstakingly bookmarking all the images used and would be delighted to do a link post, but I don't know how many people would be interested, and this is already getting long.
Magazine replacements: SFS or Box.
Magazine rack recolors: SFS or Box.
Everything is compressorized and seems to work fine for me. Let me know if there are any problems!
